Firstly, I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the advertisers, contributors and readers who have supported us throughout 2017; without you the magazine would not be possible. In this issue, we take a look at Produce World and the history behind it. This can be found on pages 18 & 19. As it’s a new year, it wouldn’t be right not to mention getting fit for 2018. With over 100 classes every week, there’s something for everyone at Vivacity gyms. You can also discover all that Horspower gym has to offer on page 25. There’s no excuse! Continuing our series that focuses on the history and intangible cultural heritage of Fenland and the Fen Edge, you can learn more about the Admiral Wells’‘lowest pub’ accolade on page 17. Don’t forget to check out the Yaxley Gazette Facebook group, which has more news about all that is happening in the area and is a great way to discuss local topics. Our community is really thriving and it’s great to be a part of it, but please remember to support local businesses. And always let us know if you are investing in the local area, it would be great to hear your story. Happy New Year everyone,

Men United In Song 2018 Supporting Prostate Cancer UK Following its phenomenal success over the last couple of years, Men United in Song is back for 2018, once again raising money for a very worthy – and specifically male – cause, Prostate Cancer UK.
L
aunching in February, the project will sign up a minimum of 40 local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none) to rehearse over 10 weeks for a charity concert at The Cresset on Saturday 14 April. To date the project has engaged hundreds of local men, raising many thousands of pounds for the charity – a fantastic result! Men United in Song kicks off with introduction sessions at Peterborough’s Key Theatre at the beginning of February. Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, just a willingness to get stuck in and give it a go! Will Prideaux, director of the project says “We’re not looking for a Gary Barlow or an Alfie Boe, just guys who want to come along and enjoy singing together. Until you’ve

tried it you can’t understand the buzz singing can bring. We’re not looking for 100 percent in musicality, but 100 per cent in enthusiasm. Come along to an introduction session and find out more, we’re convinced those who do will enjoy themselves and discover how great singing can be”. Introduction sessions will be at the Key Theatre, Peterborough, on Thursday 1 February (6.30-9pm), Friday 2nd February (6.30-9pm) and Saturday 3rd February (10.30am12.30pm). Please call or email to register. Rehearsals will be on Thursday evenings, 7.45-9.45pm, at the John Mansfield Campus, Western Avenue, Peterborough PE1 4HX. The Men United in Song concert will be at The Cresset on Saturday 14 April.

Happy New Year indeed! Christmas and the season of excess and decadence is out of the way and we find ourselves headlong into the season of austerity and drudgery.
N
evermind! I haven’t quit my new year’s resolutions yet, I’m still on the diet and haven’t decided that I’m a bit too tired to make it to the gym tonight (it’s fine, I’ll definitely go tomorrow), so I’m still feeling positive. January, in general, is a bit rubbish. All the good bits have finished and we’re left with nothing but bad weather, the regret of spending the entire month’s pay before the end of December (hello baked beans and tap water) and the knowledge that your summer holiday is still several months away. Bereft of inspiration as to what to write about I even resorted to Googling ‘important dates in January’ and the best it could come up with was that 28 January is international data protection day. It’s enough to make the happiest personality sob uncontrollably into their plain Weetabix. It wasn’t always this way. I for one think it’s a shame that we no longer celebrate twelfth night in the same way that our
ancestors have for the past four hundred years. Depending on your particular religious inclination, it was either the 5th, 6th or 17th of January and was, generally speaking, one final, almighty, ‘eat, drink and be merry’ to see off the end of the Christmas holidays. It was awesome, perhaps even better than Christmas Day; so great that even Shakespeare wrote a play to be performed to celebrate the big day (Twelfth Night, in case you weren’t sure which one). I can’t for a moment see why we would abandon this as a tradition, but I can only assume it has something to do with the January sales. To be honest though I could do without another excuse to over eat and over drink right now – got a bit carried away over the past few weeks. It could well be next Christmas before I’ve managed to burn off this year’s excess. Still – it would certainly take pride of place as the only good thing to do in January other than give up on your resolutions.

By Tracey Lomax, Assistant Leader
Girl Guides 2017 has been a busy year for Holme Guides; a village unit in the heart of the Cambridgeshire Fens, and when October arrived, it brought with it the first of three important occasions on our autumn into winter calendar, all with the local community very much in mind for our girls. The first weekend of October always sees our small village transformed, as it is transported back in time to the 1940s for 'Life on the Holme Front'. Tradition has it that a simple stall of wonderful home baked cakes and makes is set up, furnished with goodies and manned by girls and leaders for at least one of the two days. This year was no different, except for the fact that vintage costumes were eagerly sought from our lovely archive ladies, and as the pictures show, we really looked the part. Casting our minds back was also a significant part of our important November occasion, Remembrance Sunday. The parade was a solemn event for those who took part, bearing the flag, laying the wreath,
speaking for all during the service 'Lest we Forget'. The painting of the Poppy Rocks. which already lay at the memorial as the service began, had been painted by the girls in our meeting days before and looked beautiful as the sun shone. Moving into December, our thoughts (like most people’s) have turned towards Christmas. Although finding it incredibly difficult to 'think like your nan or grandad' we have been busy, off searching for gifts, enough to fill several shoeboxes, each destined once wrapped and ready, we hope, to make someone not known to us but in need, a little happier as 2017 comes to an end. So, a busy few months to round off a busy year. Well done all!
Learn to sing for FREE with
Hereward Harmony
There are many men who would love to sing. Most never get around to it, don’t have the opportunity, or may be too self-conscious to give it a go. The simple fact is that just about everyone can sing, so what could be better than a free course that will help you discover your voice?
H
ereward Harmony is a wellestablished male barbershop close harmony chorus. To celebrate our 30th anniversary we are running a ‘Learn to Sing’ course at the Orton Wistow Community Centre PE2 6XN. The course will be each Thursday from 7.30 - 10 pm, 8 February to 15 March 2018. You do not have to read music and will sing a part alongside at least one of our experienced singers. You will receive
sheet music and teach tracks that will allow you to practice during the week. We are a friendly and sociable chorus and can promise that you will enjoy the experience. It doesn’t matter whether you are new to singing or can already sing but are looking for a different style of music. Progress will be rapid and you may be surprised at how sweet the sound of a four-part harmony is.
Gemma’s Hearts Just a very short update this time we hope you all had a good Christmas & a safe new year. We are currently looking for an electrician to fit a cabinet in Ferndale & changing the cabinet at the Farcet Post Office. We had a stall at the William De Yaxley Christmas fayre. All funds went towards a new wall bracket for WDYA’s new defibrillator. Watch this space for details of a special guest who is coming to hand the defibrillator over to the school.
‘Well done!’ to Christine Oliver for winning the cake at William De Yaxley Academy’s Christmas fayre. There are donation pots at The Duck & Drake. We have been lucky to secure a defibrillator and cabinet for £600 which saved us a lot of money as they would normally cost us £1460. We look forward to giving you more good news next month.
Reserve your place now by ringing Alan Lund on 07850 007 057. Visit us online at www.herewardharmony.com

Broadway Bowls
Looking forward to 2018
by Robert Heath
The green is bedded down for winter, with much work having been done to ensure that the bowls green will be in good shape at the start of the 2018 season. Some major work is planned for 2018 as the club tries to get electricity back to the clubhouse. This will be an expensive operation and in the coming months we will be looking at various ways of raising money to pay for this. Some of our members continue to play bowls indoors at Peterborough, Whittlesey, or even Stamford and we wish them all the best. We continue to see other members through the activities of
our social club, where we’ve already enjoyed a very successful Race Night and Quiz Night. We look forward to more social events in the spring, which will also include our club dinner and presentation night, which will be held in the Farmers this year. Yaxley Bowls Club wishes one and all a merry Christmas and a healthy prosperous new year.
Rotary Club of Peterborough Ortons
Successful fundraising event In November the club held one of its major fund-raisers of the year – Race Night. The team put together an enjoyable evening for over a hundred punters who came to Nene Park Academy to try their luck. The race cards, raffle tickets and – very importantly – the envelopes for the money were ready on the tables when people arrived, together with the makings of the ploughman’s supper. Members were also hard at it in the kitchen, preparing the cheese, ham, pork pies and pickles. There was an impressive array of thirstquenching drinks from wine to J2o. Teams were allocated to numbered tables, and members were on hand to direct people as they arrived. The hard work was worth the effort! Our charity account benefitted to the tune of £2240 on the night, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, everyone leaving with a smile. Seven bottles of bubbly
went home with the owners of the winning horses; our thanks to the race sponsors, especially for the cheques that also went home with the winners. The raffle was wellsupported and seemed to have no end of prizes. So, our thanks go to all the people who came along and were so generous, and to the members who worked so hard to make it a success. We will be able to support charitable efforts here in Peterborough (like medical detection dogs, kids’ outings) and in the developing world (like Shelterbox disaster relief). Here’s to another successful race night next time!

Yaxley Group Practice
The challenging and changing health care environment You may have heard in the press that both locally and nationally there are moves for General Practice to begin ‘working at scale’ in larger groups. It is hoped this will help Practices cope with the challenging and changing local healthcare environment. With this in mind we have been considering the Practice’s options over some time. After a period of due diligence we now write to inform you of our intent to merge Yaxley Group Practice with Lakeside Healthcare Group from 1 January 2018. Lakeside is a group of Practices based out of Corby, Kettering and Rushden originally, and now including local Practices at Oundle and Stamford. We believe that this is the best option for the Practice to safeguard its future with the challenges that we currently face. We aim to continue to deliver high quality
Travel Vaccinations
We now have some supplies of the Hepatitis A vaccine so will be restarting our travel clinics from February 2018. If you are traveling from February onwards next year you can ask at reception for a Travel Health questionnaire; one has to be completed for each person who is traveling. Once completed please return to reception and they will give you an appointment with one of our nurses to discuss and give you the vaccinations required for your destination. If you are planning to travel outside the UK, you may need to be vaccinated against some of the serious diseases found in other parts of the world. Vaccinations are available to protect you against many travel related infections, such as Yellow Fever, Typhoid and Hepatitis A. You don’t always need vaccinations to travel abroad. care, continue in our tradition of innovation and add to the services that we can deliver to our patients locally. We hope to continue to be a voice for our patients within the local healthcare economy. We are extremely proud of the traditions of Yaxley Group Practice and the standard of care and access that we offer. For you, our patients, we do not envisage any immediate changes to the services that we deliver or your experience here at the Practice. There are no planned changes to our dedicated team that look after you. depends on which country you are visiting and what you are doing. If travelling to Europe please look on the Fit for Travel website (fitfortravel. nhs.uk) where you will find all the information you need. If vaccinations are required then please contact Reception who will make you an appointment to attend one of our clinics Please allow at least 4 weeks before you are due to travel, because some vaccinations need to be given well in advance to allow your body to develop immunity and some involve multiple doses spread over several weeks. Please do not leave it until the last minute.

Happy New Year from your local churches Yaxley Methodist Chapel
Journey of faith You can be sure of a warm welcome in a Methodist Chapel, whoever you are and however life has treated you.
St Peter’s Church
Making the most of every day I can remember when I was a boy calculating how old I would be in the year 2000. Well this year, I’ll be 1.5 times as old as that. As they say, “time waits for noone”. Hopefully, this is an encouragement to me and us all to make the most of every day. How might we do that? One way is to try to ensure that we make the most of every opportunity and not let setbacks and difficulties hold us back. Let me illustrate this in a light hearted way by comparing my day at the end of November to that of our cat. 30 November ewsaw the first snow of the winter. Our cat was desperate to go outside and explore. However, she put one paw outside the door, realized how cold it was and turned round and went back to bed for the day. I was due to go to Newcastle and visit our daughter for the day. I was aware that 2-5cm of snow was forecast. When I stepped out of the front door at 8am the wind chill hit me. But I was braver than the cat (!) and carried on. When I arrived in Newcastle there was a fair bit of snow already. As I ran to where our daughter had parked I stepped in a puddle of slush and discovered a hole in my shoe. As we walked to a pub
for lunch my sock got wetter and wetter. However, by “braving the elements” and a wet foot I had a wonderful day in Newcastle with my daughter. An opportunity taken despite the “setbacks”. The cat apparently slept all day and missed her chance to explore. I wonder what opportunities lie ahead of you this year. Let’s be courageous and pursue them even if we face setbacks. I am, of course, well aware that a bit of snow is insignificant compared to some of the issues which some will face this year. If you would like prayer for any issues you face please contact me. Whatever you do this year may you know Jesus’ promise to all who believe and trust in him. His last words before he returned to heaven after his resurrection were, “Remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age”. With my prayers for you all for 2018 and beyond. Happy New Year!

And don't worry if you have doubts and questions about God and Christianity. You will find that all people who go to Church have a mixture of joy and pain, struggles and achievements in their lives. Christians find in Church a place where we can be honest with God and with ourselves, and get support from others as we face the demands of everyday life. We are all on a journey of faith none of us are perfect. But there is hope. If there is something that you need to talk about or get help with, please contact our Minister on the phone number or email above.
In January there will be a Baptism Service in the Chapel. We are so happy to share in this celebration with this lovely young lady who we have known since she was a child. And it is a very special occasion as her two little boys will also be baptised with her. We wish them every happiness. Our Coffee Morning will be at 10am on Saturday 13 January. Come in from the cold and enjoy some delicious homemade cakes and a hot drink. Sunday Service and Junior Church start at 10.30am every week. Children of all ages are welcome.

The Queen knows more about Christmas then you or I do We have heard recently that the Queen insists that the Christmas decorations at Sandringham stay up until she leaves at the beginning of February. Right and proper I say. So many things in the churches year have 40 days in them. 40 days in Lent. 40 days between Easter and Ascension Day. So why not 40 days between Christmas and Candlemas. Yes Candlemas on 2 February is the turning point from looking back to the birth of the Baby Jesus to looking forward to Good Friday and Easter. So you see it truly is the end of the Christmas season not 12th
night as we assume. That is the Feast of Epiphany, the arrival of the 3 Wise Men but Christmas goes on. If you had a party to celebrate 12th Night, how about joining one of the churches who hold a Candlemas Service on [ or near ] 2 February. One such service will be held in St Giles Church, Holme at 4 pm on Sunday 4 February 2018. Do come along worship the Lord at the last of the Candlelit Services for the Season

Farmer Tom
Farewell Tony By Hayley Burroughs
For over 40 years Tony Scott has been at Broadway Garage, however it is now time for him to say ‘goodbye’ and enjoy his well overdue retirement.Tony started as a sales manager in 1976 and purchased Wesgate Motor Company (as it was formerly know) in 1980. There are many regular customers that have been using the garage over the years and Tony has become well known in the Yaxley area. Tony has had some tough times in the garage, but has always got through, never wanting to let his customers down. But he also had some amusing times, and mentions the time a customer rang up for an MOT and when asked what car it was, their reply was ‘you should know, it’s the little green one!’Tony always gave people a chance and would help anyone out.
I remember a time while I worked there, Tony agreed to let us dress up for Children In Need. I was a nun and Tony was a monk. A couple come in to look at a car they wanted. Dressed as a monk, Tony went to help them. I said to them, ‘if you can’t trust a monk who can you trust?’. They bought the car! Tony will be missed by so many and we would love to wish him all the best. Daniel Meagan is now taking over the workshop.
First of all, I hope that you and your families had a very merry Christmas and that you’ve arrived at the beginning of 2018 refreshed and ready for the year ahead. For many of us there will be uncertainties ahead, there will be new beginnings, and there will be challenges. On the farm, this may all come to pass in a single day! We’ll have been busy in between Christmas and New Year as we send a lot of our wheat off to the factory then; I can tell you that a chilly 5am start can be a shock to the system at any time, but especially after the Christmas celebrations. With the new year, we’ll be calming down (hopefully), looking after our sheep, and repairing machinery. We’ll also be cutting the hedgerows assuming the winter berries and nuts have all gone, and we start our winter bird feeding. This is just one of the conditions of the government support that we get, and we’ll be feeding a couple of tons of mixed seed to our wild birds to help them through the ‘hungry gap’ from mid-December until the end of February when food is naturally at its scarcest. It seems to be working as the finches, tits, larks, and ‘LBJ’s’ (‘little brown
Ooh look – a brand new year, all fresh and exciting and full of new things! jobs’) are everywhere! One of the new ventures that we’re launching this year is ‘FaceTime a Farmer’. This was a really exciting project that we tested on our farm last year, and we’ve been pleased that it’s been endorsed by DEFRA, and is being rolled out nationwide by LEAF – the charity focusing on ‘Linking Environment And Food’. We’ve been FaceTiming a class of 11-year-olds at a school 300 miles away once a fortnight for ten minutes, and talking about soils, biology, animal welfare, the growing cycle, natural selection, the seasons, global warming, manure, and much, much more! It’s SUCH an exciting project! At the moment there are more farmers than schools, so if you’re a teacher please e-mail janet@faceonline.org.uk with your details to take part. Farmers can get in touch in the same way, and if you’re a parent (or a pupil), do encourage your school to get involved. I think that’s enough for this month. Don’t forget to look out for delicious forced rhubarb coming into season in January, and thanks for supporting great British farmers and fishermen!

New Year's wild resolutions... Have you resolved to get fit after festive indulgence? Nature and wildlife is good for our health: fact.
W
orking outside with a group of like-minded people is really good for wellbeing, making us feel better, happier and more connected to others (if doctors could prescribe nature in a tablet form they would that’s a pill not an electrical device!). The Wildlife Trust BCN run regular weekly work parties on Cambridgeshire nature reserves and, along with the exercise, those
involved experience a tangible sense of fun and engagement (often accompanied by a well earned outdoor slice of cake and a cuppa). Health and wellbeing are significantly boosted by spending time exercising outdoors – and especially by volunteering; knowing that the environment is benefitting is a wonderful inducement for the feel good factor.

New Year, new garden Free help with gardens for Military Veterans If you live in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and you or a relative have been in the armed forces, you could get your overgrown garden spruced up for free. The Green Aiders is a free, one-off garden clearance service run by community charity Groundwork Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, and there is still funding for more veterans and their families to benefit from the scheme. It is funded by The Royal British Legion through its External Grants programme and is available to vulnerable or disabled ex-Service personnel or their spouses, partners, widows/widowers, children or dependants aged 65 plus. Through a one-off visit, dedicated volunteers led by Groundwork staff make gardens more manageable, safer and more pleasant to spend time in. A resident who recently benefited from a Green Aiders said:
“I loved the Green Aiders visit, they made my garden look like it used to before. They arrived on time cheerful, happy and polite, worked hard all day, cleared all the mess, and left my garden so nice I almost cried. A truly great service.” Head of Social Policy & Grant Giving at the Legion, Steven Baynes, said: “We’re pleased to have awarded funding to Groundwork. The grant demonstrates the Legion’s continued commitment to working with other organisations to provide the best support possible to our beneficiaries. It will also enable Groundwork to use its expertise to make a real difference to those veterans struggling with the upkeep of their gardens.”
January is the highest month for the uptake of gym membership, but for those not wishing to join a gym, perhaps the garden or an allotment beckons. After all, the cost of an allotment for one year is about equal to a month’s gym membership. It is so tempting to throw your new year self into a frenzy of heavy jobs in the garden: cutting down dead plants, raking up leaves, digging over the ground etc. However, it is best for wildlife if you resist this. We are still in the midst of winter yet dead plant matter is actually teaming with life and providing the homes and insulation for hedgehogs, toads and invertebrates galore. January is the month for garden and allotment planning, rather than feverish activity. Think about what changes you might make during the year to improve the garden both for yourself and for wildlife. Could you add a pond or smaller water feature? Is there space for a native flowering hedge? What southerly facing areas are available to install bee homes? Can you squeeze in a water butt or compost heap?
Plan your flower needs for the year ahead aiming to have something freshly in bloom every week. If you plan to add trees, now could be the time to place orders for bare root deliveries so that they can be planted once the soils thaw out. Enjoy the early spring flowering snowdrops (best time to divide and spread is whilst in the green), aconites and crocus. Take the time to appraise your outdoors and if you seek exercise, walk or cycle around the area, gleaning inspiration from other gardens and from our wilder areas. And, of course, remember that now is often the time to start germinating plants from seed on the windowsill such as tomatoes, chillies and summer half-hardy annuals.

Admiral Wells ‘Lowest Pub’ Plaque It was standing room only at the Admiral Wellsat Holme in November as crowds massed to watch the unveiling of a very special plaque. he plaque is the fourth of its kind produced by the trust, who focus on the promotion of the history and intangible cultural heritage of Fenland and the Fen Edge. The latest designation follows projects at the birthplace of astronomer Olinthus Gregory in Yaxley, the site of the Napoleonic prisoner-ofwar depot at Norman Cross and the Harold Penketh (Spitfire) memorial on the Great Fen with the Wildlife Trust. Once again, the plaque was generously donated to the Fenland Trust by Fenland Stoneworks Ltd. The news story attracted plenty of media interest and both the BBC and ITV despatched reporters over the weekend to record the event.

RB Organics, Produce World, Yaxley Our family farming and produce packing business has been present in the village for three generations, having made the big move from Whittlesey in 1932. by Andrew Burgess, Director History My grandpa, Harry Stanley bought Yaxley fen in a derelict state following the Great Depression in the early 1930s. He grew potatoes, sugarbeet, carrots, celery, peas & cereals. After the war, my Great Uncle Russell, having been liberated from the Japanese POW camp at Changi, returned home to the family business where he took on the sales & marketing of the farms produce. He famously told Tesco in 1952 that they would never last! We’ve always been leaders in our industry, in 1950 we were the first in the UK to wash & prepack carrots & potatoes into polythene bags. It was all done by hand back in the day and many of you will remember working with us back then.
Today The modern day produce industry is extremely competitive and demanding, seven day supermarket opening and ever cheaper prices has driven consolidation in the sector. When I started work in the 1980s there were in excess of fifty carrot washing plants in the UK, now there’s less than ten. Four companies have 80% of the market share, and we are proud to be one of those. The Yaxley plant is one of our five sites and is our home and HQ. It is also the country’s leading organic carrot business; our crops are grown with no artificial fertilisers or pesticides. We average around 400 tonnes of carrots per week, with seasonal variances. We even have a specialised reed bed system to filter our water. This doubles as a five acre nature reserve at the back of our site. We sell 100% UK crop in season but the season is just ten months, so we import from our growers around the Mediterranean to fill the gaps and to maintain our supermarket contracts. 20% of our workforce is local and if we included Peterborough in that it would be close to 100%. Our aim is to employ, train and develop as many local people as possible. We’re embracing new apprentice schemes, job shares and designing flexible work shifts for those it may suit. We aim to offer a career, not just a job. The industry is increasingly technical, computer sorting, automated packing, robotics and computerised systems. It will go further in this direction, so we will need more skilled technicians and operatives in the future. I am aware that there has been considerable comment in local channels about HGV traffic to the site in Great Drove. We take this extremely seriously, I am a Yaxley man, born and bred, I live in the village and I care deeply about our community. We have spent time in the business understanding the issue, coming up with some measurements and facts as well as some ideas for mitigating the effects. Some of these are in our sphere of influence, others less so. 18

Community RB Organics has been involved in supporting the Yaxley community for many years. In summary, we have a modern and successful business right here in Yaxley and we are the UK’s acknowledged experts in organic vegetable growing. Our focus is being ethical, organic and energy efficient. The plant is modern and our culture is of high integrity, open and welcoming. We are really proud of our business and we would love you to come and visit for a tour (maximum groups of 4 please) so if you’re interested please contact us on enquiries@produceworld.co.uk and we will be in contact to arrange.

As the song says….”It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” And we have been getting into the Christmas spirit here at the William de Yaxley. Our year 3 children have been practising their Nativity, ready to give their performance at St Peter’s church in front of their parents. This year the focus is Christmas around the world, showing how Christians celebrate Christmas in different countries, a subject they are also focusing on in their topic work. Our choir have had a busy festive period too, with the most beautiful performance at St Peter’s church during their Christmas Fayre, a performance at Serpentine Green shopping centre, and singing for the community around our tree on the last Monday of term. They sounded stunning on all occasions and we would like to say a special thank you to Lisa Wharton for all of her hard work with the choir. The Worship Council led the Christingle
Yaxley Infants
service this year at St Peter’s, with songs from the choir and a carol from each year group it was a very joyous occasion. We would also like to thank Dobbies Garden Centre for the wonderful Christmas tree they kindly donated; this helped to make our celebrations even more festive. Year 4 enjoyed a three day residential visit to Burwell House, where they carried out various activities including: orienteering, team building; and they filmed a news report about Mexican migrant workers using their own news scripts written in their literacy and Topic lessons; they sang songs around the camp fire while toasting marshmallows; made clay houses; and completed the visit with an historical tour of Burwell village. The children had a very hectic but fun packed residential and their behaviour throughout was impeccable, so well done everyone. May we wish you all a Happy New Year!
YIS invited take part in Pupil Voice Project In previous years Yaxley Infant School have been a leading SEAL (Social Emotional Aspects of Learning) school working closely with Cambridgeshire PHSE Service. We were approached by the PSHE (Personal Social and Health Education) Service for Cambridgeshire to take part in a pilot project to improve the health and well-being of children and young people. The Focus was to develop a toolkit that would enable schools across the county to engage young children in identifying their perceived mental health needs. For us it was an opportunity to share and a celebration of the good work that we do here to support our children’s emotion and mental wellbeing. Year 2 classes worked with staff from the PHSE service and School Councillors presented their findings to Governors.
In other news we were very pleased to see so many prospective parents take up the opportunity to visit our school with their children. Parents had a presentation followed by a tour. It was lovely to meet you all and your children. We are already looking forward to September 2018! If you would still like to visit the school please contact us on (01733 240918) or email us office@yaxley.cambs. sch.uk . The Deadline for application forms to Cambridgeshire admissions for the first round is January 15th. Parents also took part in our phonics sessions. Last year’s sessions proved so successful that we have decided to run them again this year. It was amazing to see all the children working with their parents by showing them how we teach phonics for reading and writing. We would like to thank all of our parents for their continued support and wish everyone a Happy New year.

Winter warnings!
S
adly, every winter Vets all over the country need to treat pets with poisonings, injuries and gut blockages many of which are preventable given the right precautions. Last month we went through our Top 5 Christmas Cautions. This month we talk about other warnings for this time of year
Antifreeze poison Antifreeze is extremely toxic to our pets but they seem to be attracted to drink it, picking it up from contaminated puddles, the bottles themselves or cleaning it off their fur after walking through a spillage. The active, yet poisonous, ingredient is ethylene glycol. As it’s an alcohol,
It’s true to say that there are hazards for our pets at all times of the year, whether they be seasonal hazards like grass seeds in the summer or everyday substances that are poisonous to our pets such as rat poison or lilies. But winter, it seems, does have more potential perils than any other season.
early signs of poisoning resemble drunkenness – uncoordinated wobbly movement, nausea, vomiting etc. Ensure you thoroughly wash down spillages, keep lids on securely, store bottles out of reach of our pets and take them to the Vet immediately if you think they may have ingested any antifreeze. Fireguards & candles Injury, increased fire risk Please keep your pet safe around naked flames and watch those waggy tails! Salt & grit Irritant Although it’s great for grip on the icy paths and roads, it can irritate the skin on our pet’s feet and make them quite sore. Brush down or even rinse their feet after a walk.
Routine – exercise and treatments Health & wellbeing Now we know it might be colder out there but our pets still need their exercise - make sure you continue walks and play time. Also remember to continue with parasite control (worm and flea treatment) because thanks to the wonders of central heating they don’t go away over the winter! Outside pets Health & wellbeing Any pets who live outside will need some additional attention over the colder months – they need more bedding and extra food (they use more energy) to help keep themselves warm. Remember to check on them regularly too!
For more information, please speak to Cromwell Vets or call 01487 800199. As always and throughout the festive season, our Veterinary team are available 24/7 at our Huntingdon Hospital. 24hr Emergency Service: 01480 52222

MONEYMATTERS
by Pete Bird, Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants
Do you have any tax or business questions? If so, email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest, we will publish them here.
January 2018 and taxes payable January is the month when individuals and businesses are required to pay tax. If your business is a limited company, and your tax year ends 31 March 2017, any corporation tax due for that year is payable 1 January 2018. Unlike your self-employed counterparts (see below) no payments on account are required for 2017/2018. If you are a self-employed business person, sole trader or in partnership, any balancing payment of self-assessment tax, Class 2 and 4 NIC (for 2016/2017) will be due for payment by 31 January 2018. On the same date, tax payers in this category will need to make a possible payment on account for the tax year 2017/2018. This is based, initially, as 50% of your actual liability for the previous year, 2016/2017. You should therefore take a minute to consider what your financial position is for 2017/2018. If you consider that your self-employed profits, or other taxable earnings will be lower during 2017/2018 (as compared to 2016/2017) then you can elect to reduce payments on account for 2017/2018. We should always be on the lookout for ways to protect our hardearned cash that is why undertaking this simple review may help to take the sting out of the January tax payment. You will also be glad to know, that if the results of this exercise show that your profits or taxable income have increased during 2017/2018 (compared to 2016/2017) it is not necessary to increase your payments on account for 2017/2018. However, self-assessment taxpayers in this position should be aware that any shortfall between payments on account made and the actual liability for 2017/2018 will still be payable, albeit later, will be due on 31 January 2019. If you feel that your earnings will be lower for 2017/2018 we can help you calculate your liability to see if a valid election to reduce your tax payments next year is a viable option. As that supermarket says, “every little helps”.
We have discontinued showing dates to remember, but they are still available on our website at www.birdandco.ltd/News

Fitting fitness in Anna Sunderland
M
y husband is a fitness freak and I couldn’t ever understand why. So one summer afternoon, we went to Horspower, the new local gym in Holme Road, Yaxley and met the owner, Lee Horspool. I joined that day and soon after commencing some personal training sessions I very quickly noticed that my body and mind had started to change and adapt to this fitness bug. I also took Lee’s advice and changed my diet slightly. I weighed 12 stone 7 when I started and today I’m 11 stone 3. But Lee constantly tells me not to weigh and can explain why this theory works very well, alongside why it doesn’t need to be cardio all the time.
To date, I’ve lost 29 inches across my body. I think I can lift pretty well too and although I do struggle some days, I know that if there’s no pain, there’s no gain, right? For all the physical benefits, I am also feeling mentally stronger too. I usually go once a day at 6am or I will go back later in the same day for something called LISS training. LISS stands for Low Intensity Steady State cardio and as its name suggests, it is any form of low intensity cardio where you maintain the same pace for a set period of time. Everyone at Horspower is so friendly and I will continue on this journey for the rest of my life. I now make the time and there isn’t an excuse!

Lee Horspool Classes run daily with 50+ fitness right through to parent and kids’ circuits. Gym prices won’t break the bank either with various options from a daily £5 entry fee for pay and play to £25 per month unlimited gym use (classes’ prices extra). Pop down and have a look around the friendliest gym in the area.
The Gym offers a free one off PT/intro session with no obligation to join or return. Or take advantage of four PT sessions over a four week period for £100 and get free unlimited gym entry for that period.
