We are finally into the summer months and it feels great, looking forward to lots of BBQs, picnics, long dog walks and, of course, a few glasses of good wine. With his seamless observational humour, Gazette Blogger Drew Pontikis can, nonetheless, readily liken the whole experience of summer to being a sun-dried tomato in a hot car with closed windows (due to wasps, obviously), on bubbling tarmac etc... Turn to page 5 for some of the best smiles you’ll find under the sun. Commemorating 100 years since the Great War, Yaxley and Farcet opened their gardens to raise funds for the British Legion Poppy Appeal and encourage intergenerational community engagement. See the photos of this successful weekend on page 15. Yaxley Under 13s were unbeaten this season and won the League Cup and the PFA Cup. Read about their great achievements on page 11. This month we also have a What’s On guide to everything that’s happening in the community from Gin Nights to Bingo. Don’t forget to check out the Yaxley Gazette Facebook group, it has lots of news that happens in the area and is a great way to discuss local topics. Please remember to support local businesses and always let us know if you are investing in the local area, it would be great to hear your story.

Gemma’s Hearts July Update Firstly, I would like to say ‘thank you’ for your kind words of support. Some you know that I had major spine surgery, and although it may take some time, my recovery is progressing well . We have been very busy doing BBQs at Yaxley FC since February and would like to thank everyone who came along. We really enjoyed looking after the spectators and the teams. We now have the cabinet so The Duck & Drakes defibrillator can be housed outside 24/7. ‘Thank you’ to a patron of The Duck & Drake. On 3 June we had a team of 11 to help man a feeding station at The Plough, Farcet, for the Tour of Cambridgeshire which turned out to be a very hot but lovely day. We thoroughly enjoyed it and ToC will be donating £550 to go towards a public defibrillator. We look forward to ToC 2019. Well done to everyone that took part in the Yaxley Riders reliability ride they raised £50.50. ‘Thank you’ to Daniel Snipe-Keys for fundraising an amazing £298. Dan ran The London Marathon and although he suffered an injury he managed to finish. On 28 April we held a CPR & defibrillator awareness session in Hampton. ‘Thank you’ to everyone who came. We will be sorting out an awareness session in Yaxley but the date is yet to be confirmed. There is more to it than just placing an defibrillator outside. It needs weekly checks on the defibrillator the pads which need changing every two years or when used. The battery needs replacing every 4 years depending on the use, we also check the cabinet is clean and the heater is working. An outside cabinet needs to have a heater, which kicks in when the temperature gets very low and stops the battery and the pads on the defibrillator getting damaged. Thank you to everyone for your support, we are always to looking for help if you can help in any way with fundraising please contact Gemma Saunders 07534195326 glsaunders@hotmail.co.uk

It Starts With You Our local Healthwatch in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are launching their ‘It Starts With You’ campaign to encourage more people to share their experiences of using local health and care service. The campaign will run from July to September and will tell the stories of local people who are helping to improve the services we all use. Last year, Jason, who is Deaf told us about visiting A&E and not getting a British Sign language Interpreter for over 7 hours even though he had a serious lung condition. Thanks to Jason and other people who shared their experience, we are challenging the local NHS to do better for disabled people. Have you got a story to share? Tell us about your experiences and ideas to help services understand what works, what doesn’t and what you want from care in the future. No matter how big or small the issue, tell us about it. If it matters to you then it’s very likely it matters to someone else. Sharing your opinions with Healthwatch is quick and easy and could make a big difference. Tell us what you think and help make care better for you, your family and the community. Volunteer as a Community Listener and help us find out what people who live locally think about their health and care services. You will get training, support and out of pocket expenses. Call our free Information Service if you have a question about local health or care services and need some help with what to do next. Healthwatch Cambridgeshire and Healthwatch Peterborough work together as one organisation.
Oh hooray its summer. It’s too hot to work during the day, and it’s too hot to sleep at night. Fantastic. Nothing like trying to go about your daily business whilst feeling really uncomfortable. Summer has the occasional perk, but all the chilled ciders and barbecued sausages in the world do not make up for staring at the ceiling at three in the morning in a pool of your own sweat and misery wondering if this is what it feels like to be a sun-dried tomato. Roaring hot sunshine, much like snow and any other form of weather extreme is inconvenient. It’s nice to look at, but ultimately its annoying to be in for any period of time. If you’re at the seaside then a hot summer’s day is great. Relaxing on a beach or beside a pool sipping a cold beer is much nicer in the warm sun. You’re not doing that though. Your sitting in traffic because there are roadworks everywhere, breathing in a heady mix of bubbling tarmac, choking exhaust fumes and your own resigned disappointment. That is, until a wasp buzzes a bit near the car and I have to shut all the windows. You know - just in case.
There is, however, something I do like about the summer. One thing that takes the edge off of all the downsides of this miserable and unhappy season - the kids are all off school. For a glorious six weeks, we don’t have to rush to get up in the mornings and we don’t have to worry about doing the school run. The roads aren’t clogged up with children being ferried to and from school, and the bus stops are empty of groups of teenagers listening to terrible music and pretending they aren’t vaping. I don’t know where it is they all go, but as I’m now officially old and boring it certainly isn’t wherever I want to go and its great. I don’t think I’m ever going to be a summer person. I like it cold, and unless I move to Finland I’m going to have to just live with it. Even so, it won’t be long before we’re all going to be off on our summer holidays and we can all start actually enjoying the hot weather. Hang in there - the summer holidays are just around the corner.

Lakeside Healthcare The NHS celebrates its 70th Birthday On Thursday 5 July the NHS turns 70. The birthday is an opportunity to thank staff and volunteers for their hard work and commitment. It’s also an opportunity to: look back over the last 70 years and recognise the NHS’s key milestones and achievements; outline their plans for the future including new technology and other innovations; and, to look at the challenges they face. Late arrivals When an Appointment Time has been issued to our patients we do our best to see our patients on time. Our primary concern is the safe and efficient delivery of medical care for all our patients. We ask all our patients to
arrive in a timely manner for their appointments. We suggest you are checked in and in the appropriate Waiting Room at least 5 minutes before your appointment time. We understand that a patient’s arrival can be delayed due to various different reasons, sometimes out of the patient’s control, but increasing numbers of late arrivals interfere with the clinicians ‘ ability to stay on schedule, deliver the care our patients require and can cause delays for other patients scheduled to see them. We do understand that it can be frustrating when the clinicians themselves are running late but this is often due to emergencies and unexpected care required by patients. Please be aware that arriving late for your appointment may result in you not being seen and your appointment being rescheduled for another date and time. Please make a realistic allowance for arriving early and
any potential traffic conditions when planning your journey. Please be aware and understand that despite our best efforts, it may still be necessary to reschedule your appointment. Please let our reception team know ASAP if you are likely to be late or miss your appointment. Thank you for helping us to maintain the standards of care we strive for.
Nurse Practitioner Update Since the beginning of January 2018 I have been completing my Masters module in respiratory and thoracic care. This is enabling me to carry out comprehensive asthma care plans for patients, whilst ensuring we are making any necessary changes, as
recommended by the new NICE guidelines that were published in November 2017. I feel passionate about ensuring that there is limited waste and overspend, as inhalers are one of the NHS biggest prescribing costs. Looking forward, I hope to complete my research module at the end of this year with my full Masters in Advanced Practice being achieved by the end of 2019. Kerry Gardner Advanced Nurse Practitioner

Broadway Bowls has lost one of their most respected members Holme WI It is with great sadness that we have to announce Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club has lost John Wiles, one of our most respected members. John, a well respected bowler and active committee member at the club right until the end and was Chairman for 18 years from 1994 through to 2011 and our President in 2012. During his time as chairman John helped reform the club, generously giving up his time, with many fundraising events and to help organise and see through the building of the new clubhouse. His knowledge of ‘the green’ has assisted the groundsmen through the years. Our sympathy goes out to his wife Mary, daughters Lisa and Sadie, son in law Chris and all of his family, some of who still bowl at the club. John’s funeral was held on Wednesday 13 June. The club would like to thank those who attended for the generous donations to the Yaxley Bowls Club that were made in John’s memory.

Yaxley won the opening home leg of Oundle cup, but unfortunately lost Cecil Bradshaw against Whittlesey. Also, congratulations to Pat Wright, this year’s winner of the Mitcham Cup.

Human Bingo!
Alison McGuinness, President
June, we were told, would be ‘good for our sole’! Unfortunately however our speaker called at the last minute to say she would not be able to attend. Not to be deterred, one of our speaker organisers (who happened to be standing in as President this month) decided that we should all play Human Bingo! This turned out to be not just entertaining, but informative and very social. Finding out your fellow members ‘secrets’ ... had they had a blind date, made a New Year’s resolution and kept it, had a tattoo, been born in another country, broken a bone; just to name a few, but to the surprise of some members a couple of us don’t like chocolate. I hope this little note will encourage new members who are always welcome to have a taster visit. We meet on the first Thursday of the month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA. For further details please contact holmewi2015@gmail.com
Yaxley WI Yaxley W I has no meeting in July as the members will be having an afternoon visit to Rutland Water. Details of the next meeting will be in the August Gazette.
Time for Tea Memory Café
A new Rotary year starts in July, and like clubs all over the world, we are thinking about what we want to achieve over the coming twelve months. We try to make the world a little better, by raising money to help charitable efforts in Britain and all across the world, and by our own efforts here in Peterborough. Locally, members help at the Crocus Café which meets monthly for people living with dementia and their carers; we help at one of the city’s food banks; we get ourselves wet at Sailability sailing for the disabled at Ferry Meadows; we support white cane events. We use the money we raise to help a local disabled person go to the Lake District for an adventure week, and for local children with special needs to attend Kids Out day – there are opportunities we can give to young people too. We help international efforts too, like Shelterbox disaster relief and a school in Sierra Leone. We enjoy our meetings: we meet every week, have a meal, listen to a speaker, or discuss club business. We have welcomed several new members recently – and would like to introduce more. There is a small leaflet available if you’d like to know more. Please call me if you’d like one. If you want to know more about Rotary and what we do, look for us on Facebook or email orton.rotary@gmail.com.

Clark-Drain supports Keyline ‘Millionaire’ Rally Employees from access cover and drainage supplier Clark-Drain are gearing up to take on the challenge of driving to Monte Carlo and back, in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. The route which covers over 1750 miles will see the team leave Yaxley, Peterborough on Wednesday 27th June to head towards Calais travelling through France to Monte Carlo before making the return journey to the UK in just five days. Clark-Drain will be joining a larger group of suppliers and staff from heavy building materials supplier and organisers of the rally - Keyline. This year’s ‘Millionaires’ theme, so called because of the final destination is also the ninth running of the annual event, which is hoped will break the million pound barrier. In keeping with the theme, Clark-Drain will be attempting the journey travelling through long, winding country and mountainous roads in a 22-year-old Mercedes dressed as characters from the TV series ‘Only Fools and Horses’ John Carter, Head of Sales and Marketing at Clark-Drain comments, “Previous events have been extremely successful and, although tough, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who took part. As a supplier to Keyline, we are proud to be taking part again to help support their annual target of £100,000. On behalf of Clark-Drain, I would like to thank everyone for their donations, especially our own supplier base, for their kind support.” All the money raised by ClarkDrain will go towards PCUK’s work on making improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and support. Coping with anxious feelings The adolescent years are an emotional roller coaster, full of highs and low and the perfect breeding ground for worry. We may all recognise an inclination to worry from time to time, but did you know that anxiety and worrying excessively are among the most common mental health problems for both young people and adults? How much of it is a problem depends on how much the worrying impacts on a person’s life and stops them from getting on with everyday things. Avoiding feared situations in order to stop feeling anxious can cause a person to not only miss out on important life experiences, but it also stops them learning how to handle their anxiety, which may be more intense the next time a similar situation comes round. The key to overcoming anxiety is to accept and understand the anxious feelings. As parents or carers we may have been there ourselves, we may have got the t-shirt, but that doesn't mean that we have all the answers and we need to be careful not to trivialise our young people’s concerns with dismissive comments of assurance that they are worrying about nothing and everything will be fine. To help young people manage their anxiety and to stop it interfering in their lives, it’s important for them to feel able to express their worries and for someone to understand their feelings without dismissing or judging them. Acknowledging anxious feelings can help a young person realise that these feelings are normal and that they can be overcome and managed. If you know a young person who is struggling with worry and anxiety and you need help, get in touch. Here at the Young People’s Counselling Service, we provide free, confidential counselling to 11 – 16 year-olds across Peterborough. For more information please contact us on 0800 634 4395

Employing Young People Employing young workers during the summer holidays can help you meet higher seasonal demands whilst providing the worker with essential work experience. There are, however, several key issues you should consider beforehand. You should be aware of the additional rights that are afforded to young workers to keep them safe at work. Under the Working Time Regulations 1998, those under the age of 18 can only work up to eight hours per day or 40 hours per week. They are also entitled to a 30-minute break if their shift lasts more than 4.5 hours and at least two consecutive days off per week. Prior to hiring, you should consider if their offer of employment meets these additional restrictions. As of 1 April 2018 the national minimum wage for workers over the compulsory school age, but not yet 18, increased to £4.20 per hour. You will need to ensure they are paid, on average, at least the minimum wage for hours worked by the younger worker. They should also pay special attention to those workers who are approaching the age of 18 because, once they reach 18, they will become automatically entitled to receive an increased minimum rate of £5.90 per hour. You should therefore ensure young workers are being paid the correct rate at all times. What young workers will offer you in affordability, they may lack in general workplace know-how especially where this is their first role. It is important that young workers are put through the standard company induction and workplace training. You may also consider further enhancing the induction process with sections aimed specifically at younger workers to run them through the dos and don’ts of the workplace that others may take for granted. Appointing an experienced employee to act as a workplace buddy during their initial stages of employment will offer young workers additional support and help them feel more comfortable from the outset. Whilst it is perfectly reasonable to require young workers to help out with various different tasks during their employment, you should always be conscious of the need to avoid claims of discrimination based on their age. Therefore, younger workers should not be treated less favourably or harassed because they are of a certain age or are younger than other employees. Additionally, you are advised to carry out a risk assessment to determine any alternations that need to be made to the working environment and highlight any tasks which may be too dangerous for young workers.

Feeling Fruity Have you ever wished you could grow fresh fruit in your garden but worry the space is too small, or it won’t look pretty, or it’s too difficult? What if I was to tell you that even a beginner can successfully grow a wide variety of fruit from apples and pears to plums, cherries, blueberries and raspberries, and possibly even figs or nectarines? The first thing you need to know is that the sweeter the fruit is meant to be the more sun it will require. Sun boosts sugar levels. If you have a sunny wall it’s an ideal place to train a sun-loving fruit tree like a peach or an apricot. Plant the tree at the base of the wall but not too close (about 30cm is about right) in soil enriched with fertiliser and good quality compost. As it grows splay the branches evenly and attach them to the wall. As the plant grows gradually cut out old straggly branches and tie in new healthy branches. The idea of splaying or ‘fanning’ is that as much sun as possible gets to the fruit, so it can ripen beautifully and maximise your crop. It also has the benefit of being a great space saver. Choose a variety that won’t grow too large. In slightly shadier spots you can

grow gooseberries or raspberries, or my favourite morello cherries. Most of these come in compact varieties and can also be fan-trained against a wall if space is an issue. I have a tiny orchard of minarettes - space-saving apple, pear and plum trees bought as single vertical stems which I grow in pots. They grow to a maximum of 6 feet / 2m high and no wider than 45cm. My children love them! Simply cut back the side stems to about 10cm at this time of year and you’re good to go. Just remember that pot-grown plants rely totally on you for their food and water. Thick glazed / non-porous pots are best because they retain water and act as insulation in extreme cold. Use the correct compost and food for the plant but most will do well with a regular high potash liquid feed from early spring to late summer. As a gardener I was quite late to fruit-growing, but I realised quickly that it becomes an addictive hobby. And as a complete bonus I’ve noticed a definite increase in my bee population over the past few years. Free food, and good for the environment too. What could be better?
Whichever option you choose, you will get the same dedicated, professional, sympathetic and efficient service.

Stretton Pre-School Stretton would like to say a big thank you to everyone who support our fundraisers. Our move and groove week fundraiser raised an impressive £433 and £61.60 at our recent cake sale. We also held our annual summer fayre where we had a number of stalls, a bouncy castle, ice cream, tombola, bric a brac and our popular hamper raffle. We will announce how much was raised in the next gazette article. It will soon be time for us to say goodbye to our 4 year olds as they leave us for big school. We will be holding our graduation leavers party this month where we will say a fond farewell and wish them all the best in their new schools. We are looking forward to welcoming new families to the school in September. This half term has started with some great sporting opportunities for our pupils. Our Year 4 children took part in a tri-golf event at Stanground Academy with other local schools and had a great time. They were wonderful ambassadors for our school and showed great team-work and skill. We are very proud of them all! Our Year 5 and 6 pupils are enjoying their weekly swimming lessons, also at Stanground Academy, and we have been hugely impressed by the growth in confidence and skill they have shown. We are looking forward to further sporting competitions this half term as well as our own Farcet sports day! We have been working hard to make improvements to our outdoor learning environment and our School Council helped Miss Muir to plant some new flowers to brighten up our
entrance area. Our new gardening club has also been busy weeding and planting to make the quiet area of the playground an even more peaceful environment. They are about to begin work in our secret garden. Our Summer Fayre takes place on Friday 29 July 3.30pm and we are looking forward to seeing both parents and members of the community there – you are all very welcome to attend!
The children have had an amazing interest in how things grow. They have been helping to plant a variety of plants in the garden ranging from sunflower seeds, wild flowers and to growing tomatoes and broccoli. The fun in using a water dispenser to fill up watering cans and negotiate water and how full to make them and learning about weight too. The children have also helped to plant a herb garden. Supporting mark making also making pictures and writing skills to make signs/ labels of the plants that have been planted. There has been lots of fun in the garden, enjoying the weather. Using sand and water play. Bugs are being found as the children explore which is extremely exciting. Such wonderful descriptions of what they find and the fabulous use of the ‘bug Hotel’! From this our core story is The hungry caterpillar using a lovely knitted story sack made by a local person. This has brought the story alive!

Yaxley Infants Year 2 children raise £900 Year 2 children use their enquiring minds and raise £900 for new books and our library spruce up! In previous articles we mentioned that we are currently partaking in an Enquiry Based learning project with Early Excellence. Early Excellence are a national provider of support and professional advice for Early Years and KS1 settings. As part of the project children generate their own learning questions. For example, “What is the biggest building in Yaxley?” Under the guidance of the teacher they would then choose how they wanted to present their information. This approach aims to capture the genuine interests of the child and make the learning truly child led, resulting in better engagement and outcomes for children. With that in mind the Year 2 children are Enquiring about William De Yaxley Junior School. This is the first time that the children and adults are trying this approach and so far, the children have come up with some excellent questions: Why does the logo of the school look the way it does? Why is the school called William De Yaxley? and Who was William De Yaxley? In the next issue we will let you know what they found out. To raise funds for our Library all the children took part in a Readathon. It lasted 4 weeks and the children were sponsored for each minute they read for at home. Every now and again we would get a post on our Facebook page of children settling into a book at home. Little did we know that so many children were joining in. When all the sponsorship money had been totalled the children had raised £942.90! What an amazing effort. Mrs Dibben said, “It is the most money we have ever raised!!” Thank you to Mrs York for the wonderful idea and for organising it.
Garden
TOYS
Gardens are a great place for kids to run around and get that all important fresh air and exercise. The addition of a toy or two will mean you can keep them happily occupied for hours. By Tracey Anderson
Swings are perennially popular. Make sure the size and style is appropriate to the age of the child. Better still buy one which has changeable seats so you can upgrade as the child grows, or simply ring the changes now and then. Slides come in all sizes. They can be independent structures or attached to climbing frames. You really do get what you pay for in this instance. Do your homework. Is a metal or wooden frame best for your garden. How much use will it get and how many and what ages of children does it need to support? Get the best you can afford and it will serve you for many years. Trampolines are a relative newbie to the UK garden compared with slides and swings but they are rightfully popular.
Even adults can’t resist them. You’ll need a flat surface, and a safety net is highly recommended. Most trampolining injuries occur when one child lands on another so buy the biggest your garden will allow. It’s almost impossible to police the ‘one child at a time’ recommendation so bigger is safer as each child has more space. Kids love dens. Provide a Wendy house or a tepee and let their imagination run wild. If you have the funds you can buy an elaborate fort or tree house. If you don’t have space for a permanent Wendy house, provide poles and old blankets and let them construct their own! If you have space for a sand and water area your children will love it. There are simple small plastic tables designed for the purpose and huge wooden luxury
models complete with seats and sunshade. Use specialist play sand to fill it. Make sure you buy one with a cover to protect it from the weather and prevent neighbourhood cats from using it as a toilet. We can’t all have a proper pool in the garden but most of us have room for a paddling pool. Add a couple of supersoaker water pistols and a waterslide made from heavy duty silicon and you’re set for an afternoon of splashy delight. If you have a large space you could invest in some football goals or a badminton set. But for those who love to play games and have a smaller space there’s croquet or outdoor skittles. And there are now outdoor giant versions of family favourites like Connect 4, Jenga and Chess. Time for some outdoor fun.

Secure your garden against greenfingered thieves this summer As a nation of garden lovers – us Brits are increasingly turning our outdoor spaces into extensions of our homes; cosy corners to relax in, BBQ areas for alfresco dining, and play dens for the kids.
S
plashing out on making our gardens look great can mean spending a small fortune on lighting, furniture, ornaments, plants, ornaments and even wall art. But while most of us ensure our house alarm is switched on, doors locked and a light left on when the house is empty, how many of us pay the same attention to garden security? Brighter days and longer weekends present more opportunity for mowing lawns, pottering in the garden, allowing the children to play outdoors and spending time with friends and family … and gives a chance for thieves to strike.
According the Crime Prevention website, garden crime has risen to about a million reports a year. Garden crimes jumped by about 50 percent during the summer months, but can happen all year round. Thieves will resort to stealing just about anything from the garden, from lawn mowers and expensive tools to fish from the pond and even newly laid turf! However, we can all take some simple precautions to protect the garden and possessions against green-fingered thieves, particularly during weekends or summer holidays when your home is empty.
Precautions to protect your garden and possessions Take a walk around your garden and check things that may be appealing to a thief - an unlocked back gate or shed (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools / machinery or bikes. l Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds. l Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home. l CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcomed activity from your home or mobile device. l Alarm the garage to provide additional security or think about installing some garage roller shutter doors. l If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels. l
If you are going away, even for the weekend – lock any back or side gates or other entrances to the garden to limit access. l Pack away out of sight any garden tools or equipment. Even if you take a break from cutting the front lawn, keep your mower out of reach of opportunist thieves. l Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball. l Use a security pen to mark valuable items, like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode. l Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs. l Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group – where you and your neighbours can look out for each other. Find your nearest group www.ourwatch.org.uk l Install sensory / outdoor lighting. l
When thinking about having any security, garden maintenance or crime prevention work carried out in your home and/or garden, always use someone reputable and trustworthy. If you need a by Eileen Le Voi recommendation for a safe, approved local tradesperson, visit www.safelocaltrades.com

his year the long cold spring meant weeds were late to start growing so you may find yourself sitting looking at a carpet of weed just when you want to enjoy your garden. Don’t worry, help is at hand and there’s still plenty of time for us to make big improvements.
At GreenThumb we’re here to help…
We first carry out a free lawn analysis to assess the condition of your lawn, the different types of weed and the ground conditions that the lawn is growing in. l Our four seasonal treatments will help provide you with a lush, green and weed free lawn. Prices start from as little as £15 per treatment depending on the size of the lawn. Direct debit options are available too. l
It’s hassle free and there’s no more worrying about buying and storing fertilisers and weedkillers at home. Our technicians are all fully qualified to safely use the best products, in the right quantities, at the right time of year.
l
How to help your lawn through dry spells?
If you can, water your lawn every other day early morning or in the evening l Never cut too short so never less than 25mm and when it’s very dry increase to 50mm l If water doesn’t soak in and ugly brown marks have appeared then your lawn could be suffering from the lawn disorder aptly named “dry patch”. Our drought busting water conserver called Oasis is recommended for lawns prone to drying out. l
If you’d like us to look after your lawn for you or for a free lawn analysis, contact Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028 or email us at peterborough@greenthumb.co.uk

GARDENING
11TIPS
Mid summer and the garden is at its most colourful. The frantic rush of growth has gone and the plants develop into mature shapes and colours. This is the gardening year's peak of achievement. l Prune late spring and early summer flowering shrubs immediately after flowering to promote new growth l Pick Sweet Peas to increase the flowering season l Deadhead Roses and feed them regularly l Spray Roses to control black spot, mildew and aphids l Water hanging baskets and containers at least once a day and feed once a week l Feed perennials and shrubs with a granular fertiliser e.g. Rose Plus and hoe into the soil l Tie in and train new growth on climbing and rambling Roses
no mowing no weeding
l Remove faded flowers on Delphiniums and Lupins. This may help to encourage a second flowering l Trim spring flowering heathers to remove flower heads and to keep in shape l Water newly planted shrubs and perennials in dry conditions l Semi-ripe cuttings can now be taken from shrubs and rooted in a cold frame
no sowing no feeding

Cut thistles in May – they’ll grow in a day, cut thistles in June – they’ll grow back soon, cut thistles in July – they’re sure to die. Anon, traditional saying
I
first heard this saying a dozen years ago whilst I was standing at the bar of The Lifeboat Inn – a 16th Century pub in Thorpe on the beautiful north Norfolk coast. The conversation I overheard was between two dear gentlemen who may have been there at the opening of that fine establishment, and I am sure that the wisdom is even older. It is amazing that despite the pace of change in our modern world, this ancient lore and many others like it still ring true. With the banning of so many of the chemical plant protection products that we formerly used on farms, it is ancient practice and understanding that remains in the field of agriculture, albeit
complemented by the more recent revolutions in farming - the biological revolution, and the data revolution; the former bringing a focus and understanding of our soils and soil biologyin the past ten years (“feed the soils and the soil will feed the plant”), and the latter allowing land to be tilled, planted, and harvested without a single human entering the field (search #HandsFreeHectare), and permitting us to work toward a day in the not-too-distant future where tiny seeds will be numbered and sown, and where individual plants will be monitored, assessed, and treated by laser or spot applications of nutrient or plant protection products. Exciting, huh?
Anyway, it was the olden-day rhyme about thistles that I thought of this as we planned our haymaking this year. Many farmers now plan their season not only around the growth of grass and demand from livestock, but also making compromises in terms of timing around the nesting season for our ground-nesting, farmland birds which have in some cases over the past three decades seen decline. An early cut before nesting begins with a much later cut when chicks have fledged. On our farm, we are unlikely to take a cut of hay until July, not only to ensure that thistles die, and that unwanted seeds are removed, but so that we leave cover for our hare population breeding surprisingly early this cold, wet spring,
and so that our ground-nesting birds including our populous, but nationally endangered skylark population can fledge and continue serenading us with their distinctive, shrill tune. Wherever you are this July, take time to enjoy this fantastic month full of wonderful seasonal delights, and thank you for supporting British farmers buy buying fresh, seasonal, local produce. Nb. In order to hear the skylark in full song, you may have to be ‘up with the lark’ (ie get up early in the morning)! P.S. Please keep your dog on a lead at all times in the countryside, especially during nesting season.

Flying buffet Early July just ahead of the school holidays is usually one of the warmest and driest periods of weather we experience. Plants tend to sprout on and bloom, high season for pyramidal and bee orchids in our meadows and verges, slugs and snails retreat from the harsh dryness making way for the arrival in numbers of aphids.
A
phid abundance means feeding time for important beneficial insects such as ladybirds, lacewings and their larvae. It is also a bumper time for ants who often farm aphids for their sweet milk, herding them from plant to plant, a great source of energy for the final growth spurts of the maturing winged ants before they embark once the humidity rises on flying ant day emerging to form new colonies. The flying ants themselves provide a bumper meal for birds, fish, hedgehogs and smaller mammals.
So July is a great time to see and understand the interdependence of so much life on our planet. If there were no invertebrates our bird-life would be limited to the Crossbill and one or two hunting/carrion birds such as the Common buzzard. So before reaching for insecticide to stop the ants and aphids remember that effect will pass right on up the food chain, just remember that play at Wimbledon may be impacted on again.

Grass seeds present a potential hazard to dogs from June until September. Dry sunny spells see a greater number of seeds falling to the ground where they can be picked up by our pets.
Grass seeds - a potential hazard Grass seeds vary in size, but all are like mini ‘darts’ with fine hairs and a sharp point at one end. The sharp point can easily pierce the skin, especially where the skin is thinner such as between a dog’s toes. Because the seeds have tiny ‘micro barbs’ they do not just drop out of the skin; this is what makes them a potentially complicated problem to deal with. The most commonly affected area are dog’s paws but they can also get into eyes, ears and can even be snorted up noses. We have seen some rare cases where a grass seed has managed to penetrate the skin in different areas of the body, such as the ribcage.
If a grass seed enters through the skin of your dog’s paw, it is highly irritating and can become quite sore. Your dog will usually start licking its paw excessively, there may be a red lump between their toes and they may start limping. It is important to seek veterinary advice as soon as you see these symptoms. Grass seeds will continue to migrate into your dog’s paw and can travel a considerable way if not found. It has been known for seeds to travel all the way up a dog’s limb and into the chest. Sometimes the tail of the grass seed can be seen sticking out of the swelling between your dog’s toes and a vet or owner can remove the seed easily. If the seed has travelled deeper into
the tissue, sedation is required to hunt for it. Prompt action is important – it is far easier to find a grass seed close to the skin’s surface than one that has penetrated deeper. If your dog suddenly starts to shake their head after a walk, this might indicate a grass seed in their ear canal. This requires prompt attention because seeds can travel towards the eardrum and cause problems there. Cats can get grass seeds in their eyes and ears, but this is generally uncommon. Keeping the hair on your dog’s paws short, checking ears and paws after a walk and avoiding long dry grass whenever possible are good ways to reduce the chances of an irritating encounter with a grass seed.

Hot weather and holidays with your pets Hot weather and holidays will be enjoyed by many of us this summer, but it is important to consider your pets in your plans both when the weather is warmer as well as if you’re planning a trip away, with or without your pets.
I
f your dog is lucky enough to be exploring the great outdoors with you on holiday it is advisable to check with your Vet that they are protected from a wide range of parasites and not just fleas. Just as with humans, dogs will also be a tasty treat or great new home for many unwanted bugs that they may not normally come into contact with, but can easily be prevented with a spot on treatment from your local practice. Preparing for Kennels & Catteries If your pet is going into kennels or a cattery while you are on holiday you will need to check what is required by that establishment, however most will expect your pet/s to be fully vaccinated (including against Kennel Cough for dogs and Leukaemia for Cats), as well as that they are up to date flea and worming treatments. If you know you will not be contactable while you’re away, ensure you give details to both the kennels and your Vets, for who has authority to authorise treatment in your absence. Travelling with
Your Dog Whilst many dogs love travelling by car, unfortunately about a third of all dogs get travel sick, which is no fun for anyone. If you know your dog is one of the unlucky ones: l Give your pet food in plenty of time before travelling l Open a window to allow air in l Take regular breaks on long journeys and make fresh water available often l If possible encourage your dog to look out of the front or rear window, this will allow them to fix on a distant object (such as the horizon) and should reduce feelings of nausea l Speak to your local veterinary about medication, there is now a non-drowsy tablet that can be prescribed that your dog may benefit from taking l Consider use of a pheromone diffuser in the car l You should also consider whether your dog will travel in the car boot, in a crate or on a car seat, and whether a harness is required to keep them safe while on the road.
Hot Weather Tips
General Tips
Move garden hutches and runs to shaded areas, or put a lightweight covering over to provide shade l Ensure indoor cages, crates and hutches are out of direct sunlight l Make water available from multiple sources (both indoors and outside) and check throughout the day l Apply sun block to areas where hair is thin such as tops of ears and noses (it is best to use products designed for children or sensitive skin, and you should always test the cream on a small area first and leave it for 24 hours to ensure your animal is not going to react to it) l Leave windows open, fans going and air conditioning on inside, especially if you are leaving pets alone for any period of time l Clean out litter trays and bedding more frequently l Try to avoid exercising dogs during the midday sun. Instead take them to wooded/shaded areas or take them out in the early morning or late evening when the sun is weaker
Regardless of where you are going on holiday, if you are taking your pet/s with you or if someone else will be taking care of them for you while you are away, there are a few things that can help in all circumstances: l Ensure the contact information on your pets’ microchip is up to date. l Favourite toys, beds and blankets should smell of home to accompany your pet, rather than those that have been freshly laundered. l Provide the food they are used to having at home, this will help prevent fussy eating either while away from home or on your return. l If you know your pet is of a nervous disposition it may be worth buying a pheromone diffuser or discussing specialist food with your Vets that can help to make your pet feel safer. l Plan ahead and ensure you have enough: drinking water, food, treats, medication (if they are on any) and poo bags for your dog.

Justine Widdall
I hope you’ve found this information useful, however, if you have any questions or queries please feel free to pop in or call your local vets for more advice, and whatever you are doing this summer I hope you and your pet/s have a great time!
