Chin Chin Pass the Gin James from The Ely Gin Company was our guest speaker at our May meeting Wisely he brought along a lovely gin called Afternoon Tea for us to sample along with a refreshing Elderflower and Lemon tonic. After 20 years working as a computer programmer, James took a completely different career path and switched to making flavoured gin. He set up his first stall in March 2012 at Ely Market with a selection of flavoured sloe gins and The Ely Gin Company was born. Using his knowledge of making hedgerow wine as a hobby he soon branched out into a variety of flavours, some of which he admitted worked really well and the odd one that didn’t. Opening a shop in and with such flavours as chocolate orange gin and breakfast marmalade, along with the usual rhubarb, raspberry and his very own special dry gin, he has since become a great success, you may see him at food and drink festivals around the Fens.
He explained to us how gin is made, getting technical after a tipple makes you concentrate. How it is fermented and distilled, and the London Dry Gin or his own Special Dry Gin, are the best gins because they go through the most rigorous distilling process. However, each brand will have its own unique signature flavour, which is why you may prefer some gins to others. James was a great speaker, very passionate about his product and it was very interesting to hear his story and his success, what a career change. Anyone interested in joining, please do come along and see what we are all about and what we get up to. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm. All ladies will receive a warm and friendly welcome.
Please contact holmewi2015@gmail.com for further details.

Lawrie Cooke was given the award at the charter dinner (the club’s birthday) of his club Huntingdon Cromwell. Entirely independently, just a fortnight later, his wife Janet Cooke was presented with the same award at the charter celebration of her club Peterborough Ortons. It must be a first for a married couple to each be given this infrequently awarded accolade at almost the same time. Both recipients were unaware that this award was to be given and both medals were presented by District Governor Tim Tucker. Lawrie, a Rotarian for over 30 years, was recognised for his significant contribution to the club and to Rotary at both District and National levels. He also works tirelessly for Hunts FA where he has been a referee assessor for many years and is currently a director and trustee. Lawrie was a member of the committee that organised the highly successful Disability Games in Stamford. He sings with the Rotary Voices choir and will be President of his club for the second time next year. Janet, a columnist for the Peterborough Telegraph, has been writing Rotary Corner for over eight years (a total in excess of 400 articles). As a Dementia Champion she spreads awareness of dementia
and has been a leading light in efforts working towards Peterborough becoming a Dementia Friendly Community. Janet runs the highly successful Peterborough Rotary Memory Café (Crocus Café) aided by Rotarians from her own and several other local clubs. She is a member of the Peterborough Disability Forum and is a presenter for ShelterBox, the internationally recognised aid agency. Both Lawrie and Janet have served on many committees and both have been elected as Rotary Assistant Governors each serving for a period of three years. Janet has also taken up the positions of District Health & Safety Officer and District Assistant Secretary.

Our May speakers were Julian & Rob from Hambledon Bakery who spoke of how it started with just 2 people and now employs 99, and with 6 shops as well as supplying restaurants, hotels and other shops They try to source products such as flour, milk and cheese locally where possible and aim to produce good quality loaves and without additives and all for much less than the price of a coffee! Julian comes from several generations of bakers but unfortunately his son has no plans to follow the family tradition. He said that although the work is hard it is very satisfying. He also spoke of his time as a chef working at among other places 10 Downing Street (which he nearly set on fire!) and Chequers where he encountered many famous people including the then
Russian leader Boris Yeltsin about whom he had several humorous tales to tell. This was an informative as well as funny talk and the icing on the cake or should I say crust on the bread was that everyone received a free loaf and a cake. What a pity they don't have a shop in Yaxley, the nearest to us being at Oundle. Our speaker for 13 June will be local historian Steven Perry talking about "Peterborough Before Development" We look forward to seeing members and any visitors at the Lancaster Club, Main Street, Yaxley, doors open at 6.45pm.
Over £1,000 raised for cancer Val Barker I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped with my recent "open house " to raise money to stand up to cancer. For everyone that baked cakes, donated money, raffle prizes and special Thank You to those
that gave their time to help me on the day ( I couldn’t have done it without you) Thank You to everyone who came along on the day and so generously helped raise the truly amazing sum of £1,063.98

If cooking outdoors, always check BBQs over after winter storage. Keep them on level ground and ensure they are sited away from sheds, fences, overhanging foliage and property Keep children and garden games well away from the cooking area and never leave the barbecue unattended If you have a bonfire, build it well away from buildings, tents or other flammable objects and make sure it is properly out when you leave When out in the countryside, extinguish cigarettes properly and dispose of them responsibly – never throw a lit cigarette into a field or wooded area Don’t forget to stay safe around our county’s waterways and if you see someone in trouble in water, please call 999 immediately with clear details of your location When out camping or using a tent, never use candles inside or nearby and always discourage smoking nearby. Never cook inside a tent
Last October with a lot of help, we raised £1,021 for East Anglian Air Ambulance in Yaxley shopping centre I am unable to hold further fund raising events due to mobility problems but am working behind the scenes for EEAA, with authority from the Community Fundraiser, Tammy Swiderski I would ask if anyone has items suitable for tombola or raffle (bottles, tins unwanted Christmas gifts, teddy bears etc.) to drop them into D & A Sanders Pet Care Specialists, as David Sanders has very kindly agreed to act as a dropping off point for donated items and is conveniently located for most people. I will collect donated items from him and pass them on to EAAA. Additional funding of £1,000,000 is necessary to enable the air ambulance to provide a 24 hour service, which would save another 600 lives annually across the UK. No one thinks they will ever have to call upon this emergency service but if they do, time saving is critical. Your support for this most worthy cause would be gratefully appreciated For further information regarding EAAA and first fundraising please contact community fundraiser Tammy Swiderski on 07917227066 or email tammy.swiderski@eaaa.org.uk
It’s a new season at Vivacity Lido Peterborough
Could you Help at Home? Cambridgeshire families need you! Here at East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) we thrive off the generous support of our volunteers across all areas of the charity This summer, we’re recruiting enthusiastic volunteers for our Help at Home programme. The families who receive support from us would often also benefit from practical support at home. For them, spending time together and making the most of every moment is much more important than doing the ironing or cutting the grass. And that’s where you come in. The families need volunteers ready to step into their homes and relieve some of the burden by taking on these household tasks! The Help at Home programme at EACH is such a valuable part of the support service we offer. Charlotte Redmond, EACH Volunteer Coordinator, says: “I only started working at EACH a few weeks ago and already I’m seeing what an amazing effect the Help at Home programme can have on the lives of families. I’ve no doubt we should be expanding the programme to reach more families who need simple practical support to make their day-to-day lives that little bit easier.” The only thing you need to get involved is time to give. You can get more information by contacting Charlotte at charlotte.redmond@each.org.uk or on 07889 251385. There are plenty of volunteering opportunities at EACH. You can visit the website www.each.org.uk to find out how you can support us.

gardenview Q. Is it possible to be environmentally friendly when buying PVC furniture?
Sitting sustainably Farcet Gardening Club Did you know that there are more than 25,000 different species of bee in the world? These types of bee can be divided into about 4000 genera and nine groups of bee families. According to statistics, there are more than 250 species of bee in the United Kingdom. Want to learn more, our resident Bee Keeper Richard Davies will be holding a demonstration at the Farcet Gardening & Food Club on Wednesday 19 June. Farcet Gardening and Food Club is free to all, any age or experience. To book your free place now, contact us on Facebook or email Rachel.fpc@hotmail.com
One of the great pleasures in life has to be sitting outside on a summer evening, glass of wine in hand, gazing in reverie at your precious plot But what are you sitting on? Is your furniture environmentally friendly? What about that lovely decking, or your garden shed? As gardeners we have a responsibility which extends far beyond our boundary. Trees are vital to the planet. They convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and act as environmental filters, offsetting the effects of pollution. They also provide a habitat for birds and animals. Like many gardeners I take a keen interest in environmental matters so it came as a shock when I read recently that every year our tiny island imports more unsustainably produced wood than anywhere else in the world!
Yes it is. Many companies are now producing furniture made from recycled PVCs. You’re no longer limited to the standard flimsy offerings either. It’s now possible to find sturdy benches and picnic tables. Of course, the advantage of PVC is that it’s completely weatherproof; maintenancefree, and won’t rot, corrode or splinter!
A good proportion of this wood is used to make garden buildings, furniture, fencing and decking. I was thrilled, therefore, to read about the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and their certification programme for sustainable produced and sourced wood? The FSC was founded in 1993, in response to public concern about deforestation. The council devised a wood-labelling scheme which allows a product to be traced right back down the supply chain from the consumer to its source. Any product bearing the FSC logo is guaranteed to be from forests which are carefully managed to conserve biodiversity
and support local communities. Unfortunately not all garden suppliers stock products which are FSC approved. So we need to demand that they do. The world’s forests are in decline. Some tropical hardwoods are already on the verge of extinction, and temperate forests in the northern hemisphere are also suffering because of unregulated tree-felling. As a gardener and lover of our environment I feel more comfortable knowing that I’m not contributing to the destruction of our planet. If you’re replacing your garden furniture this year, ask to see the FSC certified label. Happy gardening.

Providing for pollinators Imagine trying to travel around Britain without our road and rail network. Or imagine if nine out of every ten miles of road just didn’t exist – life would be impossible! Well for much of our wildlife this is the reality - it is confined to tiny fragments of habitat and unable to move across the countryside as our climate and landscape rapidly changes. B-Lines are a series of ‘insect pathways’ running through our countryside and towns, along which we are restoring and creating a series of wildflower-rich habitat stepping stones. They link existing wildlife areas together, creating a network, like a railway, that will weave across the British landscape. This will provide large areas of brand new habitat benefiting bees and butterflies – but also a host of other wildlife. Two lines pass right through the heart of Peterborough and surrounding villages. View the B-Lines map here: buglife.org.uk/b-lines-hub/map Everyone who lives, works, owns land or goes to school on a B-Line can help, even if only in a small way. Look at the project pages and partnership pages, to see some of the activity going on look at our map to see where we need to be doing more and contribute what you are achieving to the amp.

farm land
farmland “Spring being a tough act to follow, God created June.” Al Bernstein Hooray for June (or ‘hurrah’ if you’re a bit posh). Hooray for blueberries and beetroot and broad beans and broccoli. Hooray for elderflower cordial and strawberries and cherries, and for the arrival of pollack, peaches, and pak choi! June is a month when the countryside really shows off. One of my passions in life is ‘helping people to see what happens on the other side of the farm gate’ – one of the main reasons I love to write this column each month – and June is the cherry on top as far as I’m concerned. June is the month when farms across the country open their gates to welcome visitors from town and country, near and far as part of Open Farm Sunday. This year the date is 9 June, and our farm (and many like it) will be open. Perhaps after possibly being ‘snowed in’ by the cycle race the previous weekend you’d like to come and visit – we’d LOVE to welcome you! Details of all
farms open are on the website www.farmsunday.org, and you can search for local farms to visit and sign up, or just turn up. Ours will be an informal and fun event, so bring a picnic, and come for a farm walk, or you can meet the team from the Wildlife Trust who will be doing some pond dipping and leading a nature walk. Later in the month, food producers from across the region will be converging on the East of England Showground for the Food & Farming Day where 5,000 schoolchildren will find out more about livestock and working animals; make bread rolls and pies in Kids Kitchen; visit an African village; see the machinery and technology deployed on UK farms; and much more! Whatever your plans are for June, do take advantage of this wonderful month and the beautiful countryside we have all around us, and thanks for supporting local, British food producers.
If your school or your children’s school haven’t signed up there may still be time to register at www.kids-country.co.uk/ffd.

younggazette Folksworth Pre-school The children of Folksworth Preschool have been looking at how the seasons change and what changes happen Our own plants have started to germinate and reports so far from the children’s home learning project suggests the sunflowers are growing well. We have been watching the changes to some of our local trees as the blossoms and leaves arrive. Our radishes have been the first to appear and we look forward to continuing learning about where food comes from. We still have a few remaining places left for September and are now taking bookings up to Easter 2020. For more information please look at our website on www.folksworthpreschool.co.uk and call Niki on 07542 172075 to arrange a visit.
Folksworth Pre-school Top Markings! Our children have been really enjoying the new additions which have been made to the playground this year Probably the most popular, are some fantastic scooters which can also transform into balance bikes for the children. These have now been given their own area of the playground for use, which we have had marked out with roads and junctions to aid the children’s creativity and learning. Indoors, the auditions have just taken place for our end of term production. This year the children in Oak and Elm classes will be performing ‘Bugsy Malone’ for us. It was thrilling to see the confidence of the children as they put themselves forward to be involved, even singing solos in some cases. These songs are already becoming a familiar part of our days, as are terms like ‘hoodlums’ and ‘splurgings’, to say nothing of the Brooklyn accents! If you would like your child to become part of the rich learning opportunities we provide at Folksworth, please contact office@folksworth.cambs.sch.uk or visit our website to see which years have any spaces left for 2019-20.

Fourfields After a well-deserved Easter break, the children returned to discover their new learning themes. This is always cause for excitement and rightly so! Year 1 are thinking about “How does your Garden Grow?” and have planted courgettes, tomatoes and potatoes ready for harvesting near the end of term. The garden has been in good use already and we look forward to seeing what delights will be on show for us this year! Year 1 are planting lots of things so that they can “Grow your own sandwich” and Reception are also in the growing mood because they have planted radishes as well as being busy tasting lots of fruit and vegetables in class. The lemon-licking was a sight to behold and the faces on display very funny! In Year 2 the children are all set to find out “What Treasures Lie Undiscovered?” This all started with a mini-dig to discover dinosaur bones! Year 3’s new Topic is “Where’s Wally?” During the term, Wally will travel to many destinations and the children will be learning what life is like in those places. A treasure hunt to find out where Wally is at the moment discovered that he was in Egypt. We wonder where he will be off to next! Fourfields recently took part in the Cambridgeshire cross country championships. It was the biggest event yet with over 150 teams in both the girls and boys sections. Every child who attended the event represented the school brilliantly with incredible effort. The boys’ teams finished 2nd, 39th, 43rd and 70th. The girls teams 29th, 43rd and 50th. All fantastic performances against such a large competition. We are so proud of all those involved and certainly wish to thank the parents and staff who helped make the event possible.
Little Acorns The pre-school have been looking after their flowers, fruits and vegetables which they planted earlier in the spring term The children are enjoying watering the shoots and also seeing how much they have grown each week. The babies have enjoyed getting messy; they have explored paint, shaving foam, water and sand. It has been lots of fun. We are looking forward to taking in part in lots more messy play activities in the garden now the warmer weather is here. We have limited places for September 2019 and are now booking into 2020! If you would like to come and have a look around and are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk

William De Yaxley Bishop Stephen Lent Challenge 2019 The pupils and staff at William De Yaxley Church of England Academy came together with their families, members of the community, St Peter’s Church community and charities to celebrate the Lenten Challenge 2019, as set by Bishop Stephen of Ely Lent is the most important festival in the Christian Calendar, it is when Christians think about the way they behave, the decisions they make and the way they treat others. This year Lent started on Wednesday 6 March and lasted until Thursday 18 April. The Challenge “When I am 64” developed awareness and reflection about the elderly and the significant value they contributed and continue to contribute to our families and society. Over four weeks we have considered the following: “Growing up”The children in Year 3 incorporated their activity in “Mums in School” Day. The pupils taught the adults coding and the adults supported the pupils with cross stitching. Circle “Learning Together” was chosen by Year 4. This was linked to the story of Joseph teaching Jesus carpentry. They reflected on their parents and grand-parent’s skills and how to show respect for the elders. Circle “Being On Your Own When Older” was considered year 5. Aaron stated, “When I went to Olivemede, I enjoyed giving the elderly some cake, and seeing the building they stayed in.” Another pupil wrote that she went to her grandma’s and grandad’s and did some baking with her and it made her smile very much. Carers, pupils and the community enjoyed watching the Easter story, which was performed by Year 5. Circle “The End or The Beginning”. Year 6 wrote a story about a special trinket given to them by a grandparent, which encouraged the children to value the experience and advice passed on by grandparents. They also wrote a letter to their future Circle
selves, along with a current class photo these 3 items went in their memory box to be looked at in the future.
Elis commented in our Reflection book. She wrote: “I loved assembly, it taught me and it prepared me to think of the elderly. It was encouraging to help the elders and I loved it.” Alexia wrote: “I thought it taught children about the loneliness some people go through. I thought the Bible stories were heart- warming.” Steven Pettican, (The Light Project Peterborough) visited school and shared the four stones and messages left by the homeless people- it gave us a glimpse of their personal battles and successes. Steven also informed us of the work and support of the Peterborough Winter Night Shelter. Vivian Beck from Age UK , also visited school and shared an assembly with the children about growing old and the challenges our elderly folk face. She wrote: “Its fantastic to hear what you are doing with older people, very inspirational!” Mr Merryweather, a local resident came in to school and shared his experiences with the Year 5 children, of being a young lad living in the village. He was so inspirational. He supported both Sharman and Newton’s Local Study learning. Reverend Gareth Baron (from The Methodist Church) joined Year 5 and concluded the Lenten activities for us. Overall, it was a memorable 4 weeks. The challenges were fun and meaningful.
Yaxley Infants Year 2 Children make Moon Buggies and Yaxley Festival Success! Year 2 children have been hard at work following their Topic of “To Infinity and Beyond”. Last month they designed, made and tinkered with their Moon Buggies. As a final show piece the parents were invited to see all the children’s work and the writing that resulted from the Design Technology project. It was lovely to see all the children with high levels of engagement with this practical, hands-on learning. At the Yaxley Festival The Friends of Yaxley Infant School (PTA) also had raffle prizes and our own school bookshop the “Rainbow Book Shop”. It was lovely talking to parents and families in the local community and be part of this significant event in the Yaxley Calendar. The Friends made over £200 pounds! Thank you to the Friends members and staff for committing your own time, it is much appreciated.
In other news, school trips to Hunstanton were very successful. All the children enjoyed the experience and the weather was kind to us. Thank you again to all the parents / Grandparents for your help and support. It is much appreciated. We are now trying to recruit new governors. As a governor you would offer support to help with the running of the school. Governors meetings are termly and usually held in the evenings although some meetings can be during the school day. If you are interested in this rewarding role and want to give something back to the Yaxley community then please give us a call on the number below. Governors with local knowledge and links to other industries can make a huge difference to the development of the school and our children.

St Peter’s Church Exciting Announcements We are pleased to announce that the Reverend Sarah Hare will be our new vicar
Yaxley Methodist Chapel Happy Anniversary Celebrating our 160th Anniversary During that time our chapel has survived two world wars; held services for numerous weddings, christenings and funerals and seen our congregations fall and rise again over the years. We have celebrated the good things and supported each other through the sad things. We are still here supporting our community in Yaxley 160 years from that first service and, as we have been told many times, we are a small, warm and friendly, welcoming place. The plan is to stay that way for many more years! A lady joined us at our coffee morning last month and she told me that she was married in our chapel 59 years ago. It is so lovely
when people come and share their memories with us. Why not come and visit us and maybe reminisce? Summer coffee morning Last month’s coffee morning was held during the Yaxley Festival and we met some lovely people who enjoyed a warm drink with us while waiting for the parade. Come and join us on Saturday 8 June 10am for our Summer Coffee Morning. With a tombola, gift table, books and more and of course there will be our delicious homemade cakes and scones for sale. Our coffee mornings are a really popular event with people catching up with each other and making new friends too.

We are delighted that Sarah is coming to SPC and we look forward to her ministry. Sarah is currently a Team Vicar to 14 churches in the Wenlock Team; within the Diocese of Hereford. We invite everyone to attend Sarah’s licensing on the evening of Tuesday 3rd September, which will mark the start of an exciting new chapter for SPC.
We are also pleased to announce that Becky Dyball, currently Assistant Curate at Ramsey and Upwood, is to be Priest-in-Charge of Sawtry, Glatton and Holme with Conington. At the time of writing a date is still to be arranged for her licensing. Please remember Sarah & Becky in your prayers as they embark on a new journey in their lives.

Together we run a busy surgery attached to our house in Peterborough’s city centre. We also offer a domiciliary service so that you may be treated in the comfort of your own home, if getting out is difficult for you. We pride ourselves with the many years of experience that we have in all aspects of chiropody and are confident that you will be happy with the service we provide, which is always sensitively tailored to suit your needs. Podiatry is the modern term used nowadays for chiropody, and for a practitioner to be able to use either title they must be a member of the Health Care and Professions Council (HCPC).

Huntingdonshire History Festival
Huntingdonshire History Festival Saturday 29 June Gillian Rayment
The idea of a Huntingdon History Festival was first thought of in early 2017, which in turn led to the first meeting in September and the ideas where thoughts and suggestions were outlined. The original idea was to have 10 shop displays around town for a month, showing different parts of Huntingdon history. However, the Festival soon expanded into something much more than this and culminated in 44 events being run throughout the month of July 2018, all being free to the public. The best attended events were the opening (Civil war re-enactment and children’s art event) and closing events (A14 finds exhibition and children’s art event) with around 2000 people at each event. The decision was taken this year to expand the Festival and make it into Huntingdonshire History Festival and it is proving to be even bigger and better with Ramsey and St Neots taking an active part. The events begin with the Opening Ceremony, a Mediaeval Re-enactment, Georgia Manning’s children’s workshop and a Civil War and armour exhibition in the Cromwell Museum.

from Yaxley Festival
Our committee
They work tirelessly on the event all year, speaking to sponsors, booking in vendors and attractions, negotiating to get the best deals, applying for grants, booking in bands and dealing with all the red tape that goes into making Yaxley Festival happen. They do all this in their free time.
Our volunteers
As well as our volunteer committee, Yaxley Festival wouldn’t happen without the commitment of people who give up their time to make the event happen, from the team who worked so hard during the rain in the week prior to the event getting everything on to the field (and believe me there were times when we all wanted to give up and go home) to those who helped with litter picking and providing us with much needed food to keep us going
Our sponsors
Providing much needed support both financially and in practical ways as well. All of our sponsors both repeat and new,
Yaxley Festival wouldn’t happen without a lot of help and we would like to thank the following people for helping to make the event happen this year
what’s on
Thank you
we are so grateful for. We could not do the event without them.
Our vendors
All those who come and pay a pitch fee to sell or advertise are helping to put the event on, from the bar to the charity pitches, they are all amazing and make the event a real community feel.
Our suppliers
They are so generous to our event, going that extra mile for us or by chipping away at prices to enable us to put the event on.
Our visitors
Yes you lot, without you spending money at the fair, the food stalls, the bar, the traders or the attractions, these people would not return year after year as many do to support us. And last but not least Yaxley Parish Council who provide all the recreation facilities to us free of charge and this year provided staff to us to help ferry stallholders onto the field due to the appalling weather.
So, what we really want to say to everyone who came, who helped, who donated, who traded, who supplied is a big huge ‘thank you’ and if everyone’s up for it see you next year?

good sport
goodsport Jack was a dedicated, well-respected and loyal supporter of the club, serving for many years on the committee. Always there to help, Jack will be remembered by many for the help he gave them, as beginners. Running the Saturday and Wednesday morning clubs for those just starting out in bowls. Our sympathies go out to his wife Ann and all of Jack’s family and friends.
Bowls News
After a cold start to May, with the first game having to be moved due to adverse weather, the season finally got underway with a good turn-out for the Captain vs Presidents game. Our President Mary Wiles led her team to success. With the league games just starting, most of our teams are underway with points under their belts. Notably there was a good win for the Kites 8-2 away at Blackstone’s in Stamford. Congratulations must go to the ladies in our team, 10 of which have
made it into the county squad. Making up over a quarter of the players. We would also like to welcome and wish ‘good bowling’ to the 12 new members that have joined the club this year. We always have room for more.

Music on the move So what factors are important when choosing headphones for running? Water resistance – If you run outside this is obviously important, but many of us forget that sweat is water and if you’re running, indoors or out you will sweat, and eventually this will kill your headphones. Fit – There are headphones which wrap tightly around your head, or over and around your ears. But the best types of running headphones are probably true wireless, or lightweight Bluetooth. They are ‘in-ear’ designs with tips that fit into the ear and additional, curved, tapered 'hooks' that sit under the crater of cartilage just above the earhole, known as the anti-helix. When you’re running little things like a cable rubbing the back of your neck can feel irritating. Also, although the battery life can be irritatingly short with true wireless headphones if you use them as your main set, it’s more than long enough for even the most enthusiastic runner. Wireless and ‘true wireless’ headphones are different. ‘True wireless’ headphones completely lack a cable or connector between the earpieces. Wireless headphones are
still connected in some way, either over the head or round the back of the neck, even if they no longer need to be connected to a phone jack. Sound Quality – This is possibly the least important feature for sports use. Mostly runners want to feel the beat and be motivated by their pumped-up playlist, while blocking out external noise. Sports headphones are not about being able to pick out the subtle nuances in a Chopin piano concerto. They need to be reasonable sound quality and be able to cope with a bit of bass. Ambient Sound – Some headphones are designed to let in ambient sound with good reason: situational awareness is important if you run on your own and you want to be aware of traffic or of someone approaching you. This feature is less important if you prefer to run in a gym and want to block out the world. Running is such a great activity, and the right music will add to the experience, so pick up some headphones today and in the words of the classic from Spencer Davis Group which features on my own playlist... keep on running.

No, me neither. But there are a few tips which might help: Get enough sleep It’s so obvious it actually does need stating: most of us do not get anywhere near enough sleep. Sleep needs vary from person to person, but most of us need at least eight hours uninterrupted shut-eye. I haven’t slept like that since my children were born, and the oldest is now eight! Make your room dark and quiet Too much extraneous light and noise is not conducive to good sleep. Invest in thick curtains or a sleep mask if light is an issue and soft earplugs if your neighbour has noisy dogs or a twitchy car alarm.

Renew your mattress Mattresses do not last forever. They become saggy and less supportive with age, which makes us fidget and interferes with the quality of our sleep. A good mattress should support your spine and allow your body to relax totally. Have a bath Yes really. A soak before bed will relax your muscles and calm your mind. Lavender bath products are especially good at inducing sleep. Clear your head It’s difficult to sleep if your head is still whirring from the events of the day. Concentrate on your breathing and allow thoughts to float away. Anything you are dealing with will still be there tomorrow and you’ll cope better if you’ve had a good night’s sleep.

cheek to chic
cheek to chic e h t e s Choo perfect sunglasses By Sarah Davey
It’s that time of year when we traditionally invest in a new pair of sunglasses for the summer. There’s so much choice though! How do you whittle it down to the perfect pair? First choose the right colour frame. Warm browns and tortoiseshell suits warmer colouring. Cool greys, blues and blacks suit cool skin colouring or grey hair. Next pick a pair that flatters your features. There are no hard and fast rules. Look at what your face lacks and use the sunglasses to even out your proportions. Rounder faces often lack definition and benefit from a sunspec with strong lines. Long thin faces might need a softer, rounder style with an upswept edge. Try on as many as you can. Take selfies and compare. Add length to a short nose with a high bridge or shorten an overly long nose with a low (butterfly shape) bridge. A strong jaw can be balanced with a heavier top bar. Sunspecs are all about protecting your eyes from UV so make sure that any pair you buy has a CE kite mark, and that sunglasses are marked UV400. Cheap sunspecs not bearing these marks will probably not provide adequate protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Choose larger frames for protection but bear in mind that deeper the frame the
shorter your face will look, so if you have a long face shape, go ahead and choose deep frame. A shorter face needs a frame that's less deep, while still providing enough coverage for UV protection. Take your eyebrows into account! If your brows stick out of the top of the frame at an odd angle, you'll look permanently surprised, or angry! Choose your sunnies wisely and you'll be able to add instant glamour to any outfit.

Social media advice for separated couples
Social media is an established part of our world. The live tweeting from courts, the possible service of legal documents via Facebook and screenshots submitted in evidence, is having a profound influence on family law legal proceedings A recent survey suggested that one in seven married people have considered divorcing as a result of their spouses’ activity on social media sites. It is not just the ‘unsocial’ aspect of communicating with screens rather than loved ones that creates problems. Much activity found on social media sites can amount to infidelity in word if not deed.
Think before you post
Care needs to be taken by separating couples or parents in what they post on social media especially if there are financial or children proceedings underway. Status updates or private messages can provide evidence of adultery. All social media posts, locations and messages can be viewed by a party wanting to keep tabs on someone’s spending, raise questions about substance abuse, how children are being cared for or to prove employment or cohabitation. Whilst sometimes understandable, the temptation to vent one’s frustration at an ex- partner on social media, always creates more problems than it solves.
If a party is unreasonable, an online shaming is highly unlikely to make them less so. What goes online tends to stay and even if deleted could have been saved for evidence. Would you want your posts seen by the court?
Social media advice for separated couples
If things are difficult:
Circle Think before you post - how could this cause problems or show me in a negative light? Circle Change your passwords – ex partners often know them Circle Look at privacy settings – public includes your ex Circle Revise followers and friend lists – people who know your ex might love to report back Circle Consider opening new social media accounts – especially if you had joint accounts before Circle If life is particularly emotional and volatile, take a break from social media altogether until the dust settles. Sometimes life just calls for “real friends” in the “real world”.

Tax-Free Childcare Parents are advised to make sure they are aware of the tax-free childcare and how it could reduce their childcare costs Tax-free childcare is a government scheme available to working parents, including the self-employed, with children aged 0 to 11. Eligible parents can get up to £2,000 per child per year towards qualifying childcare. For clients with two children, it could mean a £4,000 saving per year on the family’s budget. Parents can use it on a wide range of registered childcare, including: childminders nurseries Circle breakfast clubs, after school clubs and holiday clubs. Circle Circle
For disabled children, the scheme is available up to the age of 16 with a maximum government contribution of £4,000 per child per year.
The scheme replaces childcare vouchers, which is now closed to new applicants. The government says that tax-free childcare is better than the old system as it is open to both employed and self-employed people, meaning about a million more families qualify for help. It is also paid per child rather than per parent, allowing loneparent households to get the same amount of support. However, the scheme has suffered from technical glitches - including last year when 22,000 payments were not passed onto childcare providers - and the help available has been criticised for adding to parent confusion.
To check your eligibility please visit childcarechoices.gov.uk to find out more information and how to apply. If you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest, we will publish them here.

consumer advice
By Eileen Le Voi, Safe Local Trades & Service
www.safelocaltrades.com
Rooting out the rogue traders from the tried and tested professionals The milder weather is finally here, and your garden or home exterior could do with a spring clean of its own If the effects of winter have taken their toll on your garden, property or driveway, you may be thinking about calling in the experts to inject a little life back into the space at the rear or front of the house or the exterior itself. But whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’; any offer which appears too good to be true often is. Equally, be wary when it comes to leaflets dropping through your door; some may not be all they seem. We know that there are many genuine companies who deliver leaflets, but for the many legitimate ones; there are also fraudulent ones. If you have internet access, carry out as much research on the company as you can. Safe Local Trades is a supporter of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which includes Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Police and Crime Commissioner Jason Ablewhite, Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council. CAPASP is committed to working towards stamping out scams; from postal to online fraud to telephone scams and doorstep rogue traders. We also work closely with Crime Prevention officers across the county who alert us to scam trends which we can then in turn share with our consumers and our members. So, if you are in the market for a new driveway or patio or are dreaming of a new lawn or garden for
the summer – then always use a reputable tradesperson. No reputable tradesperson will come knocking on your door ‘touting’ for business. Needless to say, it is absolutely mandatory that you never pay anyone cash at the door, especially when they haven't even conducted any work on your premises.
Remember:
Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment Circle Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing Circle Do ask them to qualify who they are and to leave you a contact number Circle Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out Circle Feel free to ask to see their credentials and / or examples of their work Circle Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach Circle
Tell-tale signs
Circle Do they have professional work wear? Circle Do they have a sign written vehicle? Circle Are they a Ltd company? Circle Do they have a UK Address? Circle Do they accept credit cards? Circle Are they offering reduced price for cash or having one time ‘special offers’? Circle Are they trying to push you into making a quick decision?
If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, visit www.safelocaltrades.com/consumers/advice/friends-against-scams
