What a busy month for the Yaxley Gazette! We had our first Community Awards which was a huge success. The event was organised to recognise those who have done exceptional work in the community,. A selection of photos and award winners are on page 16. For those of you who haven’t heard, on 16 and 17 June, Yaxley and Farcet are having an Open Gardens to celebrate the centenary; it’s a great idea, so please show your support. More details of this are on page 17. As usual, we have the local news and updates from our schools, churches, library and local groups. Don’t forget to check out the Yaxley Gazette Facebook group, it has lots of news that happens in the area and is a great way to discuss local topics. Our community is really thriving and it’s great to be a part of it, but please remember to support local businesses and shop local. And always let us know if you are investing in the local area, it would be great to hear your story.

My eldest has decided that he likes basketball. This is good – I can do a reasonable job at basketball, well enough for a small child to think I’m good at it.

Broadway Bowls’ season off to a great start

Two back to back wins for the Yaxley Spitfires. The season is off to a great start for the Yaxley Spitfires with two back to back 10-0 wins, in the over 60s Premier League against City of Peterborough and Westward Tigers. The Yaxley Sharks also won 10-0 against the Conservative club despite them only having played one game to date. At the start of the season, many of our members are involved in the County knock-out competitions, both Bowls Federation and Bowls Association. We wish them all luck and hope to see some of them at the County finals. This year the Federation Finals will be played on Sunday 15 July at Whittlesey Manor. Yaxley are having their open triples competition this year on Monday 16 July, if you would like to enter a team, £15 entry fee, please contact Kathy Browning (tel: 241967). First prize £120, second £60 and third £30.
Yaxley ambulance Cadets and Badgers Yaxley had a thriving Ambulance Cadet Division for many years. It is now in need of a little love from the local community! Unfortunately, due to people moving away and retiring we are very low on people to support the group. There may even be ex-cadets local to Yaxley? We want to keep the ambulance cadet division open (10-17 year olds), but also open a Badger Sett (7-10 year olds) alongside it. Is there any appetite from local adults to become youth leaders? The only qualification you need is a little spare time. This would get you access to mentors, courses, development etc. Mostly one evening a week. Ideally, we need at least four for cadets and another four for badgers. We are also opening a list for potential new cadets and new badgers. Cadets enrol on our national cadet programme, undertaking the prestigious Grand Prior Award. Badger undertake our Super Badger Award. Loads of other stuff like courses, camp, adventure, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and much more. Get in contact if you want to sign up! As someone that joined the local cadet unit at age 13 and went on to become a paramedic by age 22, it really helped me, and cadetships are an awesome way of developing young people’s life skills. I am still involved with the charity 21 years later and I would love to mobilise a thriving cadet unit and open a badger sett in Yaxley once more. Let me know your thoughts!

T
hat’s the best bit about parenting, your sub-standard skills look impressive when playing with your children. So during the nice weather took the kids to the rec to play a bit on the basketball court. We got there, but there were some kids playing football and trying to impress the small group of girls watching them. Fair enough – I used to think that teenage girls were impressed by my step-overs and keepy-ups as well. They weren’t, but everyone has to learn that at some point. So we went and played in the playground for a little while, went and got a drink, then came back having seen that they’d gone off to try and impress the girls further by standing near a library (spoilers – that doesn’t impress them either). The first thing to notice, there was rubbish absolutely everywhere. Empty Monster tins, Coke cans, Subway wrappers, crisp packets – it was an absolute dump. Even the kids thought it was disgusting. Next up, there was smashed glass all over
the place. I couldn’t let them play on most to the court for fear of one of us (probably me) falling over. The worst thing though – the graffiti. I’m not bothered by graffiti, in fact, my favourite every bit of graffiti is in Yaxley (holla for cheese). But whoever’s drawn a massive swastika on the basketball court really needs to have a sit-down and question their life choices. It’s not edgy or offensive – it’s pathetic. I might have asked the council to do something about it; to clean it up, paint over it, whatever. There’s not a lot of point though. If someone’s stupid enough to smash up glass where they’re playing football, or spray swastika’s on the benches they’re sitting at, then clearing it away isn’t going to solve the problem. Here’s what I would suggest though – if you see one of your friends or some other loser breaking/damaging/ruining stuff, then make sure you let them know you’re embarrassed by them. Because you should be. The rest of us are.

The Red Box Project how it works In most schools there are a few young women who lack access to sanitary protection. The result? Anxiety, embarrassment, missed lessons, missed education.
T
his should be a straightforward problem to solve. So here is what we've done..... We sponsor and stock a red box filled with sanitary towels, tampons and spare pants. The box is kept in school at Reception, with the Nurse, Student Services or with an appropriate member of staff. Posters placed in the girls' toilets encourage a young woman in need of sanitary items to ask for the red box and take what she needs. Plain bags are included for discretion. If she needs supplies for her whole period, we've got her back. No tearful panics in the loo. No wadded up toilet roll. No sitting awkwardly on one cheek. No anxious embarrassment. No missed lessons or staying home. This is a simple project and is entirely funded by community kindness, woman to young woman. Let's be clear. We love our teachers and support staff and we recognise that they go the extra mile every day. We also think that as communities around our schools,
we should step up and do our bit.
Would you like to help?
You can donate in kind. Add a packet or two of light to normal flow sanitary towels to your weekly shop. Please message this page for drop off details or tell your friends about us and ask them to consider supporting the project.
Our drop of points are: The Salvation Army Citadel, 1203 Bourges Boulevard, PE1 2AU. The Salvation Army shop, 3 Desborough Ave, Stanground PE2 8RG. A splash of colour I never dreamt that in my mid-40s I’d be subjected to bullying and harassment and especially not in the workplace. I have to remind myself that I am not alone and there is always something that can bring colour into my darkest moments … with me it’s my photography and my Splash Of Colour pictures.
I
came up with the Splash of Colour range as a way to represent that a simple piece of colour and hope can remind us that we are not alone when everything around us can seem grey and also to remind us that help is available. For me, these are simple images from nature and my favourite places that remind me that there are still many things in the world that represent happiness and keep me focussed on overcoming a bully. That’s why I decided to contact The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation and offer my support. At first by offering help with marketing activities (I am currently a marketing executive for a company owned by Peterborough
Regional College) but then I realised that I could make a more tangible difference by selling some of my photography in the form of fridge magnets, keyrings, drinks coasters, cards and simply as a framed print and donate the profits to the Foundation. That way, someone who is being bullied can always have a ‘Splash Of Colour’ with them to remind them that they are not alone and help is out there. The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation is the world’s first foundation dedicated to raising awareness of the long-term, damaging effects of bullying by connecting communities and raising funds to support those doing realworld work to eradicate bullying.
Please support my fundraising by buying one of the items available on the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation page of my website www.planetphotoart.co.uk

POWER OF ATTORNEY IS AS ESSENTIAL AS CAR INSURANCE . Some facts.. Why do you need a Power of Attorney? • More of us become unable to manage our affairs these days, without a Power of Attorney your family may need to go to Court. This can cause lots of hassle, delay and expense.
What happens if there is no Power of Attorney? • The courts may appoint someone to manage your financial affairs, without your consent. • Your friends or family may need to go to court to get authority to act on your behalf – this can be a lengthy, costly & upsetting experience. • Doctors could rule loved ones on decisions you have already made regarding health matters. • By setting up a Power of Attorney now, you make things easier for your loved ones in the future, whilst keeping control of your affairs now.
Why should you use Roc & Co Estate Planning? • We prepare thousands of Powers of Attorney each year in the UK, and make it easier for you. • We will prepare your Power of Attorney and we can register them for you as well. • Over 50% of clients are referred and go on to use us for other services. • We will come to you and explain in simple and understandable terms about Lasting Power of Attorneys.

Holme Parish Council News Mrs J Osborn - Parish Clerk
At the elections held on 3 May, 6 Councillors were elected to the Council without contest. They are John Griffin, David Neal, Wendy Aylesbury, Howard Watson, Jan Weatheritt and Terry Snitch. At the Annual Meeting of the Council on 8 May Peter Sargent was co-opted to fill the remaining vacancy. Welcome to Peter who brings many years Town Planning and Conservation experience to the Council. John Griffin was elected Chairman of the Parish Council for the coming year. The results of the recent Housing Needs Survey have been published and were explained to the Council. This is a study designed to be used by the Parish as well as planners and developers and is now available on the Parish Council website www.holme.cambs.info To summarise its results, a small need for affordable housing in Holme has been established. The Parish Council is looking into the feasibility of preparing a Neighbourhood Plan. This would be a big project and requires significant input from the residents –if enough people come forward the Council will take this further. Next Council meeting: Tuesday 17 July 2017 at 7.00pm at the Village Hall. T: 01487 831559 E: holmeparishclerk@gmail.com HolmeParish Clerk

Holme WI Alison McGuinness, President Time to Vote At our May meeting we voted on the Annual Resolution, which this year has been chosen to be Mental Health Awareness. We are all aware of how important this subject is, and this subject will be supported throughout the year and into the future by the WI. We also had a short talk from Cheyenne from Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall. Cheyenne is a fundraiser for the organisation and told us a lot about what Sue Ryder does, but there was also a lot of information, some of which many of us didn’t know, such as being able to take your own pets in with you. It was a useful, yet emotional talk, we were warned, and there were some tears in the eyes, but good to support a local group doing some superb work. We also have recently held a skittles and chips evening at The Admiral Wells, with one of our members winning top prize yet again, after winning the top prizes at our games evening in March, she is on a lucky streak.
All the paintings will be the work of members of Folksworth Art Club and will all be for sale at reasonable prices. Refreshments will be available.

Yaxley WI Our speaker for April was Sue Stephenson who spoke of her life in the ‘Swinging Sixties’. Sue lived in a smallish village and was quite naive but had us in stitches as she spoke of makeup, boyfriends and jobs, bringing back a lot of our own memories. By the end of the evening, we all had a smile on our face. Andrew Sankey was our May speaker and the subject was “Unusual Garden Features”. Andrew spoke with knowledge and humour, starting with the Romans and going through the

ages, and cleverly illustrated the features with his own cartoons. Apparently the saying ‘flower beds’ comes from gardeners using old 4 poster beds to plant the most expensive and treasured plants in! On 14 June our speaker will be Dorothy Woods talking of her journey from bus pass to student pass and as usual, it will be held at The Lancaster Club, Main Street Yaxley at 7.30. Visitors very welcome.
Held on the first Thursday of the month, 10.30am -12pm at The Royal British Legion, 210 Broadway, Yaxley, PE7 3NR, this group welcomes people with memory loss, along with their carers and/or family and friends in a safe and supportive environment. You can meet other similar people and find out about useful resources in your community. There’s no need to book, just turn up. Everyone will receive a warm welcome! Your business could be part of the Yaxley Yaks’ kit Yaxley Yaks will be launching their new senior team match kit over the summer and there is still a chance for local business to be a part of it. The new kit will be the first kit the club has owned as opposed to asking players to buy their own so it’s a significant step forward for the club. In return for offers of sponsorship and in addition to a logo on the jersey we will use our website and social media channels to promote the business or businesses involved to ensure a maximum return on investment. There is still space on the sleeves and shoulder of the jersey so please contact yaxleyyaks@hotmail.com for more details.

Rotary’s Young Photographer competition We’ve had some rather exciting news! From time to time we have told you about how we work with Nene Park Academy in ways that benefit the school, or our efforts, or both. Quite often this is achieved by supporting entrants into the various national youth competitions which Rotary in Britain and Ireland organises. The most recent competition was the Young Photographer. First, with help from Nene Park’s photography tutor, there was a competition within the school to select pupils to go forward to the district competition, and we were blown away by the quality of the entries – portfolios of artistic shots, showing both creativity and technical merit. The hard choice was made, the most promising were rewarded by being entered in the district competition. Parents, staff and Rotarians attended a prize-giving event at the school. The District competition was organised by the Rotary Club at Towcester and included entries from the East Midlands and Lincolnshire. This week we heard that the District winner for the senior age group was James from Nene Park – congratulations! He will go forward to the national final in June hopeful to be at the prize-giving at de Montfort Hall in Leicester in June. Good wishes go to him from everyone at Orton’s Rotary Club! Not only that – Sophie the intermediate age-group entrant was a creditable runner-up. Nene Park has plenty to be proud of. If you want to know more about Rotary and what we do, look for us on Facebook or email orton.rotary@gmail.com.
Yaxley Community Allotment A few months ago, a seed of an idea from Yaxley Parish Council was to help set up a Community Allotment. This idea has germinated and grown and the allotment is now up and running.
O
dette Pineger has stepped forward to coordinate the allotment and looking to visit a number of other community allotments in the area including the Green Back Yard for ideas and to learn from them. She has green credentials and is a strong believer in Freecycle which has already gained the group tools etc. To date, there are 15 people working the community allotment and they have agreed to call themselves ‘The Cuckoo Clearing’, with a statement, To Grow Community Spirit. They wish to thank all the people that have contributed for far, but the list is so long and therefore will thank some of the key contributors:Des Watt Roadways for the raised bed and footway, Richard from SCL Ltd for help with the sleepers, Allison Lenihan Norris for sponsorship, Susan Bate for coordinating the documents side of this project, Stacey from Yorkshire Building Society for a 10 person ground force and Andrew Burgess. There are so many others that have helped in so many ways from existing allotment holders giving guidance and encouragement to people supplying seeds and tools etc. you know who you are so a big ‘thank you’ to all. When this project started it was to help bring parts of the community together and introduce them into allotments and growing. What wasn’t expected was the positive personal impact it would have on so many people. The following are quotes from those joining the allotment.
‘It’s getting off the couch and helping me push through the pain, but most importantly the people I have met along the way and the fun we have’ ‘I love team working, collaborating with people, sharing, growing things, wildlife, fresh air and exercise. I also enjoy giving my time to a really worthwhile local project that is fun.’ ‘This project is fantastic for the adults placed in my care, we really appreciate being part of this very special community group.’ ‘Nice to be part of a group led by people with modest but realistic ambitions and are generous with their commitment and enthusiasm.’ ‘I love the way people have come together. Gets me out of the house and the exercise does me good, plus fresh vegetables to share. I would like to thank all concerned in the project.’ ‘I’ve recently moved to Yaxley and when I saw an article about the project in the Gazette I thought it’ll be great to join. I can’t take on a full sized plot so a small patch is perfect. It’s also a great way to meet new people and learn more about Yaxley.’ ‘I can’t grow vegetables in my own garden, this helps get me out.’ ‘Love the togetherness it has brought with the bonus of fresh air and the growing of my own produce.’ As you can see the allotment means so much in so many ways, what a fantastic project to be part of. Thank you again to all involved.
There is still a lot to do, so should you wish to join, or learn more about the allotment or The Cuckoo Clearing, either contact Odette 07847 665454 or email yaxleycommunityallotment@gmail.com

No one is turned away and with rising numbers of kids with depression and anxiety we need your help more than ever. £360 can fund one child through a course of treatment and recent research has shown that for every £1 spent on this type of support, society saves over £6 by reduced costs in healthcare and the criminal justice system. No one can beat mental health alone but with your support you can have the experience of a lifetime and help a young person who is struggling. Perhaps you have needed help in the past or know someone who does? Register now if you are interested via www.bit.ly/2puXm8d and secure your place. They will send you sponsor forms and give you further information. Raise £315 (including your £50 booking fee) in total and your skydive is free and YPCS raise £100. If you can’t do the actual jump then please send this messagel to all your friends and work colleagues and with your help we will literally save lives.

Tax Tips Question I am hoping to start my own business very soon, but I am not sure whether I should incorporate straight away or not. The business will require a capital cash investment, so it is likely that it will make a loss in the first, and maybe even second year of trading. Due to the loss relief rules is it better to be a sole trader or a limited company in the early years of trading? Answer There are of course, various advantages and disadvantages of incorporating a business. You will need to weigh everything up and may come to the conclusion that you’re best to carry on your business as a sole trader in the early years. This situation may be particularly relevant if you envisage making losses in the early years of trading, because you can carry back losses made in the first four years against personal income of the three preceding years, often resulting in a refund of tax becoming due. However, don’t miss out on the opportunity of forming a limited company later on when the benefits of company status may be more valuable.

Question I am thinking of buying a property in England to rent out. Will I be able to offset the legal fees, stamp duty land tax, and deposit costs against the rental income I hope to receive? Answer: The three items you mention relate to the actual purchase of the property, rather than to renting it out. The costs are considered as “capital expenditure” and cannot be claimed on your first tax return for the rental property to offset against rental income. However, do keep a note of these costs, because you will be able to claim for them for capital gains tax purposes, if and when you eventually come to sell the property. Owe would suggest you always seek professional advice and we could assist with these matters.

St Peter’s Church
Yaxley Methodist Chapel
The importance of saying ‘thank you’ On May 9 I had the great privilege to be involved in a service at St Giles Holme at which Lance Bombardier William Barrington, Bill, was presented with the Legion d’Honneur. Bill was awarded this honour for his involvement in the D Day Landings in Normandy in June 1944. If you live in Holme or Conington you can read more about this award in last month’s Holme Parish News. I’ve known Bill for several years and he is a warm and inspirational character. As I drove home across the fen after the service it occurred to me that 74 years was a long time to wait to be thanked. Now, I’m certain that Bill didn’t do what he did in Normandy (and indeed elsewhere in WWII) in order to be thanked. However, it did feel to me like a good reminder of the importance of thanking those around us who make a positive impact on our lives. I heard a Christian speaker ask recently how one could tell if someone needed encouragement. “It’s straightforward,” was his response: “if someone is breathing they
need encouragement!” In other words, we all need to be thanked and encouraged – Christians, those of other faiths and those of none. May I suggest that as you read the rest of this article you give some thought to who you might say “thank you” to today? This simple act will make a real impact on the person / people you thank. If you enjoy folk music may I extend a welcome to you to a concert which is being held at St Peter’s at 7.30pm on Friday June 8th as part of the Oundle International Festival. The concert is being given by TEYR and tickets can be purchased at oundlefestival.savoysystems.co.uk You are all very welcome to join us at St Giles, St Peter’s and indeed other local churches as we thank God for all that he has done for us.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the end of WWII I was at the Yaxley Gazette Community Awards evening recently and the people receiving the awards have worked tirelessly over many years for Yaxley. Without them, and other like minded people in and around Yaxley offering their time and commitment we would not be such a vibrant Village. With the sun shining at last, while I write this, we have the promise of Summer to look forward to. I look forward to the Summer Fayres, plant sales, marathons, music in the park and all those things that make a British Summer, including barbecues in the rain. This year we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War Two and the Yaxley and Farcet Celebration
and Remembrance event will be held this month. What a wonderful way for our community to celebrate together while we remember those who lost their lives for us. The Chapel Coffee morning will have our delicious homemade cakes and scones and obviously, being June, there will be strawberries!! There will be a few surprises on this day too. So please come and join us for this event. Coffee Morning Special 9 June at 10am Sunday Services and Junior Church 10.30am every week.

The Prison of Norman Cross
The Lost Town of Huntingdonshire Paul Chamberlain The History Press, hardcover, 208 pages
W
hile the site was one of the major prison depots in England during the Napoleonic Wars, it was also integral to the defence of the East of England against enemy invasion. Military barracks housed troops who, aside from guarding the prisoners, were responsible for the security of the region. The depot housed men, women and children of many nationalities; all of whom were swept up in the global conflict on land and sea. French, Dutch, German, Italian and Polish soldiers and seamen found themselves held here for varying lengths of time. Of these men, 1,770 died and were buried in the depot cemetery, uncovered by Time Team in 2009, and their story is told from the time and place of capture to how they died. Charles Boucher, hanged for wounding a turnkey; Barthelemy Jumeau, shot while attempting to escape; and Pierre Conscience, drowned when he fell into one of the wells; are
some of the dramatic tales of death in the prison alongside those who died of illness, especially during the enteric fever outbreak in 1800. These men now rest in a quiet corner of the English countryside. The prison was more than just a place of confinement. Men who found themselves out of the war would settle into a comfortable routine, manufacturing bone, straw and wood models to sell in the prison market, where civilians would purchase souvenirs of their visit to an establishment that was part of the English tourist trail. The prisoners were fed and clothed regularly and so found life in the prison to be a comfortable existence, especially when their talents could earn them money. Some did so well out of their manufacturing activities they could employ other prisoners as servants and cooks, while some took home with them many hundreds of pounds in earnings. Aside from the legal activities that kept the prisoners busy
there were also illegal goings-on. Manufacture of pornography was a serious issue for those attempting to improve the morals of the nation, and when such material started appearing in the countryside the Transport Office of the Admiralty (who administered the war prisons) often received anonymous letters complaining about the problem. The same happened when the manufacture of straw plait by the prisoners was discovered, as this undercut the price of the civilian manufacture and threatened the livelihoods of people in the surrounding countryside. The authorities waged a constant war against those involved in this illicit trade, including soldiers of the garrison who were often complicit. Alexander Coulon was desperate to leave the prison system, discovering an opportunity when he learnt of the forgery of banknotes by his fellow prisoners. He worked with the staff at the depot to uncover the guilty men, who were tried and
sentenced to hang; Coulon being rewarded with his release. The prison population was not a static one, with men (and some women and children) being incarcerated there for the duration of the war. Many spent up to eleven years at the depot before liberation while others were there for only a matter of weeks. Neutral seamen could apply for release and in the interests of diplomacy, the Admiralty readily agreed. Those who did some service for the authorities would be rewarded with funds to travel to the coast and then home. Many enlisted in the British forces in preference to life as a prisoner of war. The Prison of Norman Cross: The Lost Town of Huntingdonshire is the story of a prison, a town, and the people who lived and worked there. It is the story of an establishment that had impact upon the surrounding communities, and one that often had great impact on the people within it, and these human stories are told within the book.

Farcet C. of E. Primary School
What a wonderful start to the summer term we’ve had here at Farcet! The classrooms have been filled with exciting learning opportunities and our topics such as Dinosaur Planet and Potions are inspiring the children to produce some fantastic work. We are always keen to take any opportunity to visit places of interest in the local area and this month, our year 3 and 4 children had a fabulous day visiting Peterborough Museum to learn all about the history of medicine. They were able to dress up in costumes from the Tudor period, look at medical artefacts and create their own natural remedy. We are very grateful to the museum for the workshops they provided and I know the children thoroughly enjoyed their visit and learned lots.

We are very lucky to have beautiful grounds which are home to a variety of wildlife. Our ‘secret garden’ is one of those areas but is in real need of some TLC. We held a community gardening event this month and made a start on the weeding but would be very grateful if any members of the community are able to support with ‘gardening duties’. If you could spare some time, please contact the office. School Governors play a critical role in the life of our school and we are looking for new members to join our Governing Body. Being a governor can be enjoyable, stimulating and rewarding and tried and tested training and support available to help you throughout the four years term of office.
Daily forest school sessions in our onsite woodlands Located just outside Sawtry village
On 24 March, our Outdoor Classroom received a makeover for our children to use in the warmer months ahead. Last year we had a very successful rejuvenation of our Reception Outdoor area. On the back of that success we turned our attentions to the Outdoor Classroom that backs onto the Yaxley Recreation ground. Teachers, Parents and Grandparents worked all day to give the area a much needed revamp. We now have a circular area with new bark and painted seats, a fantastic bug hotel and our reading throne donated by last year’s Year 2 parents; painted and ready to use. One of our professional days early this year was spent learning about Forest Schools. Reception children are now using this space every Friday afternoon for Forest Schools. This achievement would not have happened without the support
of our wonderful volunteers. Thank you to: Mr Vellum, Mr and Mrs Taylor, Mr Nesbitt, Mr Nesbitt (grandad), Mrs Nesbitt (grandma), Mr Whaley, Mr Coker, Mr Coker (Grandad), Mr Pontakis, Mr Search, Mr Prichard and Mrs Strickson. The Friends of Yaxley Infant School have made our outdoor classroom a priority this year. They have secured a grant from Persimmon Homes for £1000 and along with all the other money they raise we will be able to add new features to this space. If your child is due to start in September please can you call the school to accept the place and we will then forward you information through the post. This will include taster sessions, start dates, school uniform etc… if you require more information then please contact the school on (01733 240918) or email us office@yaxley.cambs.sch.uk.

Holme Pre-School
Looking A-head! Although we still have a very busy few weeks to go to the end of this term, we are already looking towards the next academic year and the exciting plans we can make for it. You see our school family is growing! We are delighted to announce that from September, we have a new Headteacher who will be joining us, as well as a full class of new Reception children. Michelle Norbury has been in Primary Education for 14 years and has a breadth of leadership experience, most recently as Deputy Head of a Primary School in Peterborough. Her shared ethos and vision for the school shone through during the recruitment process. “I am passionate about developing both children and staff to fulfil their potential,” Michelle says, “and I believe we can all achieve so much more in the right, nurturing and stimulating environment. Folksworth has a great reputation across the area, and I am really looking forward to being able to shape that and impact on its future.” Although our Reception class for September 2018 is full with a waiting list, there are a few spaces in other year groups. If you want to be part of this growing family too, please visit our website or contact us for more details www.folksworth.cambs.sch.uk.
There has been a huge interest in colours and how they mix. The children have been spending time experimenting with colours. The children inspired many different colour mixing opportunities. One of our pre-school friends brought in some skittles. At home they had been using skittles to make rainbows. With this we decided to also look at rainbows. Our core story of Noah’s Ark shows a rainbow promise at the end. The children expressed their knowledge of how rainbows appear including different types of weather they have experienced. What a wonderful way to document their knowledge of the world around them We did other rainbow experiments using red, blue and yellow cups of coloured water and just water, with towel leading from the coloured cup to the clear water. Over the day the children noticed how the water was changing and the effect of a rainbow. Lots of fun and exploring by all. An interest of plants and flowers has lead onto our next theme of planting and growing.
Stretton Pre-School Here at Stretton, we have been enjoying and making the most of the beautiful weather. The children have loved the sunnier spells spent in the garden and going for walks. Main Street recently enjoyed a sponsored move and groove week where the children stopped what they were doing and danced to the music every hour. At our Fourfields site, thanks to some green fingered volunteers,
we have recently renovated our garden in order to use this space for outside learning where the children will get stuck in with planting. This month we look forward to welcoming dads in for a stay and play session to mark Father's day. On the 23 June, we will be holding our annual summer fayre between 12-3pm at the Amenity Centre, Main Street. We hope to see you there. Any donations for our raffle will be much appreciated.
Little Acorns Summer is finally upon us and all the children have loved making the most of the time in the garden and getting out and about into the community. We have been on walks to buy our fruits and vegetables for our snacks and meals, to see the horses and look for other animals in the fields and the preschool have been on their leavers’ trip to Hamerton Zoo. The preschool are getting ready to leave us ahead of their new adventure to “big school”, they are enjoying visits from the primary schools they will be attending, meeting their new teachers and finding out exciting information about their school. We are currently taking bookings for September 2018 and into 2019! If you would like to come and have a look around and are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or littleacorns.daynursery@yahoo.co.uk

beef, chicken, and pork through 12 months of the year, and Andrew Burgess of Produce World in Yaxley will certainly tell me that they harvest carrots nearly all year round (FACTOID: most organic carrots grown in the UK are washed and bagged in the factory in Yaxley), but those of us with allotments will likely be harvesting our earliest carrots in June! June can curiously be a quieter month on our farm. Many farmers will be cutting grass for hay or silage in June, but on our farm the spring growth of grass will certainly keep our sheep satisfied, and the spring rush of caring for arable crops will subside during June, so we can sit back and wait for harvest. Except we won’t sit back; farmers
don’t really know how to! June is the month for investigating new varieties, learning new methods of production, and planning for the year ahead. In our area, the worst of weeds – blackgrass – shows itself above the crop in May, and so rotations for next year can be planned in June, with the worst fields being ploughed, or laid down to grass, or perhaps changed to grow spring crops in an effort to beat the foe who has no chemical nemesis. One of my favourite quotes about this month is “It was June, and the world smelled of roses. The sunshine was like powdered gold over the grassy hillside.” (Maud Hart Lovelace). I certainly hope that your June smells of roses and that the sunshine is like powdered gold! Thanks for supporting British farmers...

Two June visitors to enjoy June is often one of the sunnier months probably as it falls just before the school holidays, it is also a great time for flowering plants providing abundance for our pollinators, regular dead heading of flowering plants generally elongates the flowering period.
T
wo exciting summer visitors may well put in an appearance in our gardens and are well worth looking out for. The hornet hoverfly is our largest hoverfly and as the name implies it is a hornet mimic, the hummingbird hawk moth is a day flying moth that resembles a hummingbird as it drinks nectar from flowers. If you have a dark glass garden table consider putting a cover over it when not in use as when the sun shines it appears to be a pond to
flying water beetles that land and fry on its hot surface, sadly the same is true too of many older solar panels though obviously you would not wish to cover them in the sun. This is also a good time of year for a garden natural balance check watch out for overpopulations of so called pests such as greenfly or slugs and take steps to create better conditions for their respective predators. Overwintering homes for ladybirds and lacewings or log piles for ground beetles.

Biscuit & his saviours This is Biscuit, a 7 month old chocolate Labrador, and we’d like to tell you his story.
L
ike many puppies, Biscuit arrived at his forever home at around 8 weeks old. Only 4 days into his new life, his owners brought him to Cromwell Vets for a check over as he was off colour and had some diarrhoea. He didn’t get better, in fact 24 hours later he’d got worse and was admitted to hospital and continued to deteriorate. Biscuit was diagnosed with the deadly disease parvovirus. Parvovirus attacks rapidly dividing cells, most severely the intestines. It can infect any age dog but puppies are the most susceptible and it often takes the life of the sufferer. Sadly, there is no clear cure once the disease is contracted – all veterinary medicine can do is support the dog’s body, treat the symptoms and hope they are strong enough to pull through. At Cromwell Vets we’ve seen many over the years suffer with this horrendous disease and many don’t make it. If a dog does survive the disease, they can have long-term side effects. Biscuit’s owners and our vets wouldn't give up on him. On day 2 in hospital, Biscuit was
given blood plasma transfusion to help support his delicate system. But when he didn't improve vet Rebecca, who was looking after him at the time, knew he needed that something more. With other resources exhausted, Rebecca called in one of her own family dogs, Hollie the cocker spaniel, to help. Hollie was a star and donated 70mls of blood to Biscuit. It was still touch and go for Biscuit but after a few more days in hospital, he surprised everyone and was well enough to go home! As you can see he's grown to be a very healthy 7 month old normal dog. Biscuit and his owners even got to meet Hollie & Rebecca! Please note: Hollie is not a regular candidate for blood donation as she's a 11kg cocker spaniel, we normally ask for dogs over 25kg. But Biscuit was so tiny he only needed a little blood to give him a chance, and she was the only option available for Rebecca at the time - she really did go above and beyond for little Biscuit. If you think your dog would be good candidate for blood donation, please speak to our vets.

Dogs in cars Unlike us, dogs cannot sweat to reduce their body temperature. In the hot weather they pant as their means of keeping cool. A hot car is rather like an oven and panting gives insufficient relief for the dog. Like humans, they can suffer heatstroke which, for your four-legged friend, can have serious consequences. Heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, disorientation, excessive drooling, vomiting, seizures, or a deep red or purple tongue are all indicators that the dog is suffering heat stress and needs to be moved to a cool place. If you believe your dog has suffered heat stress call your vet for further advice. It is worth noting that the side effects of heat stroke may last for days after the event causing disorientation, lack of appetite,
dehydration and a racing pulse. In severe cases brain damage can occur, and this can be permanent. Additionally, cycling/running with your dog on a lead in hot weather can be just as dangerous to your pet. Asking your dog to exercise next to you in hot weather will exhaust them very quickly and potentially cause significant heat stress. No-one wants to take the fun out of these lovely warm days but if you do travel with your dog it may be worth taking water and a small bowl for them so that they can rehydrate at regular intervals and refrain from leaving them unattended in the car.
If your dog is suffering from heat stress call Station Bridge now for friendly, helpful advice.
LowDown Film Festival
Peterborough’s Inclusive Film Festival Films Festivals are always deemed a stuffy, highbrow affair where people from the film industry judge Independent (Indie) short and feature length films, and make a judgement across all aspects of the films. You have probably heard of Cannes Film Festival or Sundance Film Festival or even a few in the UK, like the London Film Festival and wondered what on earth is going on. Well, in September this year (14th, 15th & 16th), myself (Richard S of The Film & TV Show Radio Show & Podcast) and the team behind YaxFest, are bringing a much more inclusive, public Film Festival to the village of Holme, with The Admiral Wells Pub (the lowest pub in the British Isles – see where we get LowDown from?) at its heart. We are planning a Film Festival that mixes the Highbrow, with family entertainment and aspects of Comic Cons. We have panels, workshops and Q&As planned with industry professionals, as well as a plethora of films already submitted and going through the judging process. BUT… we are also asking the public to come and join in; enjoy the film based traders, film based vehicles such as the TARDIS, DeLorean to name just 2, enjoy our Drive-in Cinema and, of course, watch all the fantastic Indie films that have been selected. We will have the Category winners being announced on the Saturday (15th) and the Grande Winner will be announced on the Sunday (16th). We also have music planned throughout the weekend and on stages, with the songs being film based song covers only! We have already secured a Q&A Panel with a very talented, and up & coming, Writer, Director and Musician, a cast member from Game of Thrones and a cast member from Ready Player One, as well as some very excellent feature length films and their cast and crew and some TV series cast and crew too. We have so much more planned that we will be sharing over the coming months. We are actively encouraging local Schools and Colleges to get their students involved and submit films to the festival, as we want to be able to give the next generation of filmmakers/actors/writers etc the chance to showcase their talents to the Film Studios we have attending, looking for the next big thing! If you are into films, why not get your school or college to get in touch with us? We would LOVE to have EVERY local School & College involved! Caribbean Catastrophe 23rd June 7.30pm
Eight guests have been invited to dine at the Captain’s table on the Royal Sapphire cruise ship, on the first night of their 14-night cruise around the Caribbean. Unfortunately, the Captain is unable to attend and Wilhelmina Warner, a flamboyant American widow who likes to hear the sound of her own voice, leads the conversations at the table, encouraging the guests to get to know each other. Two weeks later they gather in the bar for last night after dinner drinks and Wilhelmina decides to hold an impromptu party in her cabin whereby all the ‘friends’ she has
made over the past two weeks are invited. Wilhelmina had not exactly made herself very popular with the passengers but reluctantly they attend, however they make their apologies after a short while. Before long a passenger from the deck below sees a body fall into the sea. It turns out that Wilhelmina had been strangled and pushed overboard. Everyone who attended the party are suspect.
