If you need inspiration for a unique card or present why not pop into Just for You in the Broadway Shopping Centre, where you are sure to find something special. Farcet Clay Shooting Club domates £8000 to local charities
Running for Christian Aid John Harper
This may be a little crazy now that I’ve reached my 8th decade, but I’m excited at the prospect of joining the Christian Aid team running the London Marathon next April. With the aim of raising at least £2000. This is a charity close to my heart and I thought I would take on the challenge to raise £2000 by getting my legs working round the London sights along with the other 30,000 runners. I realise that my fundraising task is quite a challenge, so I would really appreciate your help in spreading the word as much as you can, as publicity is key to attracting sponsorship donations. Christian Aid makes such good use of funds raised. For example, £8 will provide a new pair of boots to protect a Syrian child refugee through the winter; £20 - a delivery kit with everything a Kenyan mother and baby need to survive in the critical 24 hours after birth; £25 – a life-saving temporary shelter, food and clean water kit for families devastated by conflict in South Sudan. If you would kindly consider donating online my ‘Just Giving’ page can be found at bit.ly/JohnHarper2018 or by texting £1,2,3,4,5 or £10 to 70070 with the code HGVA53. Either way if donors are also taxpayers gifts can be Gift Aided, which means an extra 25% goes straight to Christian Aid. I also have a Facebook page which I will update with my training progress – or otherwise! Many thanks for any support you can give, John Harper (Rev) local speaker for Christian Aid 07986 858818
The Farcet Clay Shooting Club, known as the Black Swan has been dissolved and no longer shoots at Gosling Drove. With the sale of the assets the Club was able to give £8000 to various local charities. With their usual charity Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall receiving £6000. The new shooting ground is at Catwater Farm, Thorney Road Eye PE6 0QL. For more details call John on 07766 242733.
Lost bracelet I am hoping that someone has picked up my bracelet, it has great sentimental value, it is a Thomas Sabo Black beaded bracelet with 1 letter J crystal charm and 1 silver green frog with an articulated mouth. I had it last at the Post Office in the Broadway Shopping Centre, Yaxley. If anyone has found it please contact me Julia on julia.sutcliffe1@yahoo.com

I have a cat. Two cats actually. We got them about six months ago, and I have grown much more attached to them than I had thought I would – I’ve never been much of a pet person, having grown up in a rented house we were never really allowed them. My grandad used to have two pet birds when I was a child and that was quite exciting until one day we went round and one had got out and flown away. It was only later that I realised that the one that had flown away may have…you know… ’flown away’. Anyway, with six months of cat owning experience, I have produced a list of pros and cons for anyone who’s thinking of getting a cat. Pro They are quite cute. Con They eat everything. I thought having kids was bad, but I haven’t been able to eat a snack undisturbed since we got them. Pro They do come and cuddle up to you just because they like to be around you. Con They demand attention and don’t care if you’re busy. On more than on occasion they’ve knocked my iPad out of my hand, clambered onto/across my laptop, and woken me up in the middle of the night,
usually because they want feeding again. Pro When one of them cuddles up to one of the children on the sofa they get all excited and will sit perfectly still, and its really peaceful for a short while. Con After five months of just running round excitedly, one of them has started bringing us home ‘presents’. In the past couple of weeks we’ve had two mice (one of which was dead), a blackbird (very much dead), a pigeon with no head (obviously dead) and a bag of rubbish that he’d found, that was most definitely not from our bin. I wouldn’t be without them now, but I would add a note of caution when thinking about getting a cat – if you think at any point in your future life you might like to eat something without being hassled about it, don’t get a cat.

Become a Community Champion ... join us today! Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service runs a Community Champion scheme to spread fire safety messages and encourage residents to carry out safety checks on their homes.
Lambing Day at Morborne Farm Sunday 11 March 11am - 4pm Morborne Farm, Morborne PE7 3TG There will be lots to see and do. You will have the chance to hold a baby chick, sit on a tractor and if you are lucky even see a lamb being born. Funds raised will be in aid of The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, Parkinson’s Support and local charities.
No booking is required. Please follow the signs for parking and wear suitable clothing and wellies. Pregnant women are advised not to visit the lambing barn. No dogs please and no smoking. We look forward to welcoming you.
Volunteers work across the county and we're always looking for more people to join us. Community Champions speak to local communities about home fire safety and escape plans, as well as referring those people who don't feel confident about undertaking a check of their own home. They may also be asked to complement the service already being delivered by attending community events and providing support, as well as being part of our consultation community.
Community Champions participate in training that enables them to develop interpersonal skills, enhance their CVs, make new friends and improve their knowledge of the work undertaken by the CFRS. No previous qualifications or specific skills are needed to become a Community Champion and we are always looking to build a team of people with different skills sets, backgrounds and abilities.
The scheme is run by charity Groundwork on behalf of the service. To find out more about the Community Champions scheme, contact Emma Prestidge on 01480 587140 or email emma.prestidge@groundwork.org.uk

Speedwatch Update We have had a busy few months with new volunteers coming on board and being trained; the most recent being Kevin Lander, who was recently trained by Cambs Police. We welcome Kevin to the team.
W
e have also had a meeting with our local area Speedwatch coordinator, following which Cambs Police have now approved four extra locations for us to monitor traffic. All of these had been requested by village residents: Broadway, just past the railway bridge facing towards Farcet (40mph), Broadway, our side of the railway bridge facing towards Yaxley (30mph), near 25 Ferndale facing towards Bentley Avenue (30mph), London Road - near 46 - facing towards Hampton (40mph). Adding these new locations now gives us a total of eleven approved sites around the village. Unfortunately, two other locations were requested by residents but have been declined approval: Bentley Avenue - not a long enough straight to monitor traffic. Daimler Avenue - not enough room on the pavement for pedestrians to pass the Speedwatch kit. Over the past year we have built up a good working relationship with neighbouring villages Speedwatch teams, mainly Stilton, Elton, and Farcet and we are hoping to be joined by more in the coming year. Residents have asked why we are not out that often, and only conduct
monitoring sessions at the weekend. This is due to five reasons: • Winter light prohibits us setting up in the evening. • We have to share our kit with two other villages on a rota. • Weather conditions have cancelled pre-arranged sessions. • We require a minimum of three trained volunteers at each session. • More importantly, all our volunteers have very active roles in all the other Partnership projects, and subject to belief, all find time to hold down full-time jobs. We always welcome new volunteers. If you are willing to give up just a couple of hours a month, please get in touch. On behalf of the Speedwatch Team I would like to thank all the residents who over the past year have given us encouragement and support, from just giving a ‘thumbs up’ as they have driven past, stopping to say ‘thank you’ for what we are doing, and to pedestrians who have also taken the time to stop and talk to us as they walked past. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who have helped over the past year, especially those standing out in the cold in the winter months.

Additional appointments available at Lakeside Healthcare We are making even more appointments available for patients at this practice. Additional appointments can be booked between the end of January to the end of March 2018. This is because we know that there are times you want to be able to see a GP at short notice.
W
e also know that over the winter many people have seasonal illnesses which require more than a pharmacy yet don’t need emergency treatment. The extra appointments are bookable by our GPs when they call you back after you have booked a telephone call. If you haven’t yet signed up for GP Online Services simply call in to the practice and ask about it or go to our online registration page here (yaxleygp. secure-gpsite.nhs.uk/onlineapplication) We’ll need some proof of ID and we can sign you up there and then. GP Online Services make it easy to book appointments online and request repeat prescriptions. Find out more about this at nhs.uk/GPonlineservices If you are not able to attend an appointment you have booked, for whatever reason, please let us know. We can then offer that appointment to someone else who needs it.
Alternatively, there are a wide range of other local NHS services available, including: NHS 111 NHS 111 can help residents if they need medical help or advice urgently but it’s not a life-threatening situation. Open 24/7, 365 days a year, NHS 111 connects patients to a team of fully trained call advisers who are supported by experienced nurses, paramedics, and GPs. They will ask questions to assess the symptoms, and give healthcare advice or direct the caller to a local NHS service. If necessary, they can also call an ambulance or direct people straight to A&E. Calls to NHS 111 are free from a landline or mobile phone. GP Out-of-Hours Service (OOH) You can access the GP out-of-hours service by calling NHS 111. The NHS 111 team will assess your condition over the phone and if they think you need to be seen by a health
professional, they will refer you to the OOH GP service. Self-care Many minor illnesses can be treated at home with basic medicines that are available from your local pharmacy. Stocking up on essential medicines can help you avoid a trip to the GP or even A&E. Medicine cabinet essentials include: • painkillers such as aspirin, paracetamol, and ibuprofen • anti-diarrhoea tablets and rehydration powders • indigestion treatment • bandages and plasters • antiseptic cream or spray • first aid kit Pharmacies Local pharmacies can offer expert advice and treatment for a wide range of common conditions and minor injuries. Pharmacies can help with a range of things including aches and pains, hangovers, colds, emergency contraception, and non-
prescription medication. General opening times for pharmacies can be found at www.nhs.uk Minor Illness and Injury Units There are a number of Minor Illness and Injury Units (MIIU) across the county that can treat a range of minor illnesses and injuries such as sprains and strains, broken bones, minor burns and scalds, minor head and eye injuries, bites and stings. No appointment is needed. Peterborough MIIU Monday – Sunday: 8am – 8pm, Bank holidays: 8am – 8pm Easter Holidays The surgery will be closed on Good Friday, 30 March and Easter Monday 2 April. We will be open Saturday morning 31 March. Please ensure you have sufficient medication for that period and orders for necessary repeat prescriptions should be made as early as possible in advance.
If you have any questions or would like more information please talk to a member of our staff at the reception desk.
Would you like to join the Peterborough Lions? Peterborough Lions Under 13s are looking to increase squad numbers. The current squad has a great group of players, some with a lot of rugby experience, others who are playing their first season of competitive rugby, however they all enjoy it.
T
hey train on Tuesday evenings at the Peterborough Lions Ground in Bretton and games are played on a Sunday. Both the training and the games mean that the lads are often very muddy. Safety is the main priority and as you would expect with a competitive sport they get the odd bump or bruise, but are always smiling. The fully DBS checked coaching team are excellent, very committed and passionate about developing these young men into better rugby players, as well teaching them the respect and the manners that are part of rugby. The club give the team fantastic support, and are often asked to be ball boys for the first team’s home matches, so not only do they get to watch some high level rugby, they also receive burger and chips at the end as a ‘thank you’ (I suspect that is a big motivator for some of the lads).
So if your son, grandson, nephew etc has played rugby before at school and enjoyed it and wants to join a team, or has played for another team in the past, then please bring them down to the Lions. Maybe they just want to give it a try, if that's the case they are also welcome. They don't have to be the biggest, strongest or quickest; the team has all shapes and sizes as well as diverse backgrounds. One of the team members has autism and ADHD, he loves training and playing, being involved in rugby has also helped him in other aspects of life, he has made new friends, he feels more confident at school and plays for the school rugby team as well. So if the lad who is part of your family, or who you know, has similar difficulties maybe rugby could benefit them as well.

Amazing act of generosity
I wonder if you are annoyed when you travel on the bus and train by other people talking very loudly on their phones. Well, making a phone call on the train had an unexpectedly positive outcome for a student recently. She was on the phone to her mother and crying about the amount of debt she was in. She had given up her part time job in order to concentrate on her studies and was struggling to make ends meet. At the end of the call she fell asleep. When she woke up she found 5 £20 notes folded under her napkin. Another passenger had heard her phone call and left the money for her anonymously. The student launched a Facebook campaign to try to find the generous passenger. I don’t know if she has managed to find them. What an amazing act of generosity and giving with no expectation of gaining anything in return by her fellow passenger. At the end of this month we commemorate the generosity and self-giving of Jesus on the cross and we celebrate his resurrection on Easter Sunday. When he rose from
the dead Jesus folded up his grave clothes and left them in the grave. The student found £100 under her folded napkin. If we look beneath the folded grave clothes at the reality of what lies behind them we can discover something of infinite value – not in monetary terms, but in terms of everlasting life. As I said, I don’t know if the student has found her benefactor. If you would like to find out more about the one who has bought you eternal life why not join us at a service over Easter. Our main services at St Peter’s on both Good Friday and Easter Sunday are at 11am. For details of our other services please go to our website at www. saintpeters.co.uk or call the number below. If you don’t live in Yaxley and cannot find the times of services in your local church please call the number below and we’ll put you in touch with your local church. With my prayers that you might find the eternal life Jesus has won for you this Easter,

Yaxley WI Unfortunately our January speaker had to cancel due to work commitments so instead we held a social evening. We had a very pleasant time reminiscing over our W I photo albums followed by a quiz and as it was the first time some members had met since Christmas there was a lot of catching up to do! On 4 February some members went to see the film Suffragette at the Key Theatre together with a short talk about the suffragette movement in Peterborough. Although it was shown the previous night on TV it was nice to see it on the big screen and it reminded us of the tremendous efforts these brave women went through to get women the vote. On 8 March Robin Wilson and friends will be performing A Radio Play which should be very entertaining. We meet, as usual, at the Lancaster Club, Main Street, Yaxley at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm) and visitors are very welcome.

Spanish Fiesta
Alison McGuinness President
Our first meeting of the year was to start with a demonstration of Spanish cookery, however, due to illness our guest speaker had to cancel, so we continued with our Spanish theme and held a quiz night instead. We enjoyed Spanish snacks whilst trying to answer a variety of general knowledge questions and complete a Spanish picture quiz too. It was all very well organised at the last minute by our guest speaker organisers. Our centenary banner is also progressing well and starting to take shape with members contributing various skills in sewing and knitting. It also looks as though there will be plenty of events on throughout the year celebrating the centenary of our Federation, starting with a special screening of the film Suffragette, including a talk and cup of tea. Please remember, if anyone is interested in joining please do come along and see what we are about and what we get up to. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm. All ladies will receive a warm and friendly welcome.
Here come the bees March is the month when our wild bees traditionally start to reappear. The early solitary bees will start hatching and feeding on spring flowers but the more noticeable and easily identifiable arrivals are the queen bumblebees.
A
s the daily temperature rises these behemoths of the insect world crawl out of hibernation in beds of dried moss and begin the search for new nest sites. Queen bumblebees are larger than the more commonly seen workers and are often spotted flying very close to the ground over grass and other areas lacking in flowers. These queens are not suffering from cold induced confusion nor are they seeking flowers, they are looking for suitable nest sites. In fact, they are sniffing out the smell of stale mouse urine as old mouse holes are the favoured nest site for ground nesting bumblebees. The tree bumblebee, however, is the exception, which naturally nests in hollows in trees and thus has taken a fancy to bird nest
boxes and house eaves as a preferential nesting site. This adds a whole new meaning to the birds and the bees. In the UK we have just 27 species of bumblebee some of which are increasingly rare and it just so happens that one of these the Large garden bumblebee has been verified as living in the Peterborough area within the last five years so definitely something to look out for.

ickens was right in that March days can be bitterly cold or beautifully warm, and some days can seemingly be both at the same time. On the farm though, one thing is certain, and that is that spring is advancing. The sheep are beginning to have their lambs, spring calves are born, the autumn sown crops are growing on, and the land is drying for the spring planting. In nature, all around are signs of spring with seasonal flowers in full bloom, the smell of wild garlic, and all of life waking up. The mad march hares are at it, the birds and the bees are at it, and over in Morborne village, Nigel and Janet Rome are at it too. And by ‘at it’ I of
“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.” Charles Dickens, “Great Expectations”
course mean celebrating spring, and in the case of Nigel and Janet, they’re preparing to throw open the gates of their farm for the fantastic annual celebration of agriculture and springtime, ‘Lambing Day’, which this year is on Sunday 11th March from 11am to 3pm at Manor Farm, Morborne, and is supported by the NFU. There’ll be a chance to see lambs born during the day of course, but a LOT more besides, with tractors to climb on, chicks to hold, pigs to scratch, games to play, shire horse rides and lots more. I’ll certainly be there, and there will be lots of farmers there to show you what goes on at this time of the year to help the sheep as their lambs are born. It’s ideal for families…and
big kids too! It costs £5 for adults (children are free) but every penny goes to charity; the Rome family and friends give everything for free. Thanks Farmer Nigel! There’s further evidence of springtime at the greengrocer (or supermarket), with spring onions in season this month as well as cauliflower, kale, baby leeks and purple sprouting broccoli. And my favorite, rhubarb. In the fishmongers there’s fresh sea bass and sardines and from the wild game larder there’s venison and wood pigeon. I hope to see you all at Lambing Day. Have a great March, and thanks for supporting British farmers by buying high welfare, quality, British food and drink.

General Data Protection Regulation (part 2) Following our Newsletter last month, many small business owners will have pencilled in 25 May 2018 as the date when the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force. But it’s also likely they all have the same question: what does GDPR mean for my business and me? The simple answer is that it means a lot. Any company, big or small, will have to comply with new regulations regarding the secure collection, storage and usage of personal information. Data is any information which can be used to identify someone, including (but not limited to) their name, address, telephone number, email address, etc. But the good news is that the GDPR recognises that smaller businesses require different treatment to large or public enterprises. Let’s start at the beginning with ‘what does GDPR mean’. The two central objectives of GDPR are: 1) give citizens and residents back control of their personal data and 2) simplify the regulatory environment for international business by unifying the regulation within the EU. Another point to remember is that although the UK has voted to leave the EU, UK business will still have to comply with new regulations if the data they handle is about EU citizens, or has the potential to identify individuals within the EU. What’s more, digital minister Matt Hancock has confirmed that the UK will replace the 1988 Data Protection Act (DPA) with legislation that mirrors the GDPR post-Brexit. The key stipulations of GDPR are firms of over 250 employees will be aware of their obligations. GDPR will also apply to small businesses under 250 employees if the processing carried out is likely to result in a risk to the rights and freedoms of individuals. Individuals have more rights dictating how businesses use their personal data. In particular, they have the ‘right to be forgotten’ if they either withdraw their consent to the use of their personal data or if keeping that data is no longer required. At each of the stages, the onus is on the person collecting data to ensure that the entire process is compliant. So what can you do to get a handle on your data? Well, better management of your data has to begin with discovery. GDPR will mean that every piece of personal information held by your business needs to be identified – even if it’s on a mobile device or in the cloud. When you understand where you’re holding personal data, you’ll then be able to better monitor compliance and the processes involved in dealing with that data. Preparation will be key, but GDPR compliance will be an ongoing task that will require careful monitoring. Being aware of the new regulations and what they mean for your business is vital. So don’t stick your head in the sand and wait for it to pass. After all, once the GDPR arrives, it’s here to stay and unfortunately as are penalties.

s well as the fresh produce we will also have a butchery range, deli produce and lots of other goodies in-between! We are keen to offer a wide range of gluten free produce – all chosen by Farmer Steve – our resident coeliac. Phase I of our farmshop which opened in January, includes our onsite café, serving good quality coffee and tea, which can be enjoyed with a tasty cake or light lunch. One of our main aims is to provide our customers with the opportunity to enjoy the farm environment, through the availability of open space and walks around the farm. So for phase II we are creating walkways around our veg growing area as well as providing children’s play equipment and an outdoor courtyard so you can either sit outside with your coffee and watch the children play or burn off some steam walking around the fields, watching the crops grow. We have a few farm animals for you to see and our goats, Paco, Pandora and Prada are keen to meet
Steve and Lynn took over Whitehall Farm, Farcet in 2007. They are both passionate about good quality, local food, but also about educating the public on how food is grown and how we manage the farm for the benefit of the environment. So they decided to open a farmshop, to sell home grown / local fresh produce but also to provide onfarm educational facilities for schools and colleges and give the public a chance to walk around a farm and actually see the produce growing in the field. everyone! We hope to open up the outside area in the spring and we will also be offering on-farm educational visits to local schools and colleges later in the year too. So it’s a pretty busy time for the Harvest Barn team, but we are very much looking forward to welcoming new customers!

Holmewood Part I: The Camp Sheila Tibbs
Some people called it ‘tent city’ or ‘tin city’, but to me it has always been ‘the camp’. I am talking about the group of Nissan huts in Holmewood which were built for the American forces during World War II; these were converted into homes for local people. At the entrance to the ‘camp’ was a guardhouse which was turned into a small shop.
I
lived at No. 3 The Bungalow which stood alone on the left-hand side of the road, quite close to the strip of woods that runs along the B660 towards the A1. More huts were placed in a circle and along the east side of the road. On entering the hut, better known as bungalows, you went straight into the kitchen with the bathroom on the right. All of the bungalows had running water; the only properties in Holme to have this luxury. Moving through the kitchen you went into the living area where there was a large black range to keep us warm in winter. Going deeper into the bungalow, there were three bedrooms running off a passage (great for football). A simple home but very welcoming. It was like a small community; all the children would play together (we were affectionly known as the ‘camp kids’) and it was not unusual on a 18
summer’s evening for mums to be joining in, turning a clothes line into a skipping rope and with one each side of the road turning the rope for us kids to jump in and out of. We had cricket matches and made old carts out of bits of wood, pram wheels, and anything we could find. There was a ramp in the top corner near the back woods where the Americans used to mend vehicles, we would take the home made carts up to the top and race down. During the summer holidays the boys would collect wood and old tyres to make the annual bonfire on the spare piece of land in front of our bungalow. On Bonfire Night all the community and some villagers would congregate around the fire and bring their fireworks for all to see. In winter – when we had snow – older children would clear the snow for the more elderly
All around us were deep woods, which made another big play area and in spring these would be full of bluebells and snowdrops ... a lot of good hiding places for ‘Cowboys and Indians’. Following the road around the woods you came upon all the buildings that were used in the war – now known as Area H – good places for roller skating and exploring. At the very end of the road was a large wall, where we would find bullet shells which we called the ‘bullet dump’. We were able to walk to the back of Holmewood Hall and gaze at the splendor and wonder of what it was like inside, yet even then it seemed like a mystery building. Back in the camp, across the road from our bungalow was a little road leading to a small pond where we would catch tadpoles and newts, we would always put them back, but we would spend hours with our jam jars catching them. Across from the
pond was a large waste area with huge horse chestnut trees, another area for kids to play, collect conkers and climb the trees if you were brave enough. Another relic from the American occupation was a huge white barrel, again a fascination for us, another place to play and use our imagination wondering what it was used for in the war. Finally, in the corner opposite the shop some people kept a pig. The small potatoes dug up out of the gardens were usually boiled in a big pot in one of the bungalows. As kids and always hungry, we would wait until they were cooling and pick the skins off them and munch away; the taste was like nothing else! Needless to say, the pigs were hard done by as we ate them by the dozen. Next month - Growing up beyond The Camp & school days

Write your Will today... tomorrow is often too late
O
ur mission is to ensure that your assets and loved ones are protected by providing you with the best advice available. During one of our free consultations we will talk through your estate planning needs. With sympathetic support we will answer any of your questions and provide you advice every step of the way. We can visit your home or office and we encourage you to invite family or friends to attend.
Four reasons why you need a Will Your will informs everyone what will happen to your money, possessions and property after you die (these are called your ‘estate’). • A Will makes it much easier for your family or friends to sort everything out when you die without a Will the process can be time consuming and stressful. • If you don’t write a Will, everything you own will be shared out as defined by the law - which isn’t always the way you might want. • A Will can help reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax that might be payable on your property and money you leave behind. • Writing a Will is especially important if you have children or other family who depend on you financially, or if you want to leave something to people outside your immediate family.
Why you shouldn’t die without a Will When you die without leaving a will, the law decides who gets what
and how much. It doesn’t matter what your relationship with those people was like when you were alive. By leaving a Will that says clearly who should get your property and money when you die, you can prevent unnecessary distress. Some parents have had to sue their own children to get a share of their partner’s estate when their unmarried partner dies. The law says that in this situation the children get everything. Our trained consultants can assess your current circumstances and recommend products that provide the protection for you, your family and your assets.
‘Lasting Powers of Attorney’ In the future you could be in a position where you are unable to make decisions for yourself. Physical or mental incapacity following illness, an accident or old age could leave you in a position where your interests are at risk. Likewise, if you are not able to administer your interests for an extended period of time, they could be at risk, too. But through a Lasting Power of Attorney, you can ensure that your own decisions regarding your well-being and estate are always adhered to. We cover Cambridgeshire and the Eastern region. We will work closely with you to determine the best course of action for your needs and ensure that your voice is heard if you are ever unable to communicate yourself. Furthermore, Lasting Powers of Attorney can be established

so that they can only be used once mental capacity is lost, thus ensuring that no one makes decisions on your behalf until the time is right.
Whose purse will pay for your hearse? What are ‘Funeral Plans’? Purchasing a funeral plan enables you to pre-plan, pre-design and pre-pay all your end of life services in advance. In doing so, you enjoy peace of mind and key benefits; remove the emotional burden and much of the financial worry from your next of kin, enable you to fix the cost at today’s prices and also enables you to specify precisely what funeral you’d wish for, as opposed to leaving your next of kin wondering which send off you would have liked.
Why pre-pay? Pre-paying for your funeral using one of our plans not only takes a weight off of your own shoulders but also makes it easier for those you leave behind. A plan like this proposes a better financial option than putting money in a savings account to pay for future funeral costs. Since 2004, funeral costs have soared- but interest paid on savings accounts has remained very low. We offer a range of funeral plans that can be purchased through a direct payment or through monthly instalments, whichever is more suitable for you. Our Golden Leaves funeral plans offer you the chance to create your own unique plan in advance, and at a fixed price. No medicals, just one of our experienced consultants, will visit you and explain.
On average, you can save 30 – 50% Protection against the rising costs of funerals in general. Funeral director’s costs set to at today’s prices – no more to pay for these services, no intrusive medical health checks - acceptance is guaranteed and payment options are available.
What will a ‘Family Asset Trust’ do for me? Everybody wants to protect their assets, most draft a Will hoping to
ensure that the assets they have worked hard to acquire during their lifetime, are automatically passed on to their children and chosen beneficiaries after their death. However, a Will can only dispose of the assets that you own at the date of your death and if the value of these is eroded during your lifetime, there will be little if anything left for your children and other beneficiaries to inherit. ‘Lifetime Asset Trusts’ are designed to protect your assets during your lifetime. They offer peace of mind that your assets can be passed on intact to your spouse, children & their bloodline, and any other beneficiaries, following your death.
During your lifetime Once the Trust has been created, you can use it to protect your assets. Most people will protect their home and their savings, leaving capital in their bank or other savings accounts for ongoing living expenses. Income from savings protected within the Trust can be paid directly into your bank account to supplement income from earnings or pensions. Typically, like a safety deposit box, assets can be added and removed from the Trust during your lifetime. If you have large expenses that cannot be met out of normal income, like that new car, holiday or cruise, or house repairs, the appropriate sum can be transferred from the Trust. You are named as the ‘Principal Beneficiary’ of the Trust and remain in full control of the assets within the Trust while you are alive and have mental capacity. You are free to move home, or release equity from the Trust at any time. As the Principal Beneficiary of the Trust, you have a guaranteed right of occupation in the property for the remainder of your life. The Trustees, usually your children, cannot evict you under any circumstances.

Farcet C of E
Folksworth
On 2 February, Farcet joined thousands of schools for a mega maths-inspired fundraising day to raise money for the NSPCC. Our day of maths fun saw children experience Emoji Maths, complete activities linked to Jack and the Beanstalk as well as using properties of shapes to create pictures. Parents were invited to join their children for some number fun in the afternoon and a great time was had by everyone. We have re-introduced pupil-led assemblies this term and have been so proud of how the children have responded to the challenge. Each week, pupils have given up their lunchtimes to prepare thoughtful and engaging presentations for collective worship. These assemblies have been enjoyed by both staff and children and we are looking forward to seeing more of these next half term. Our new topics continue to be very popular in the classrooms and our Year 3/4 Brunel Class had a wonderful (and messy) time learning about the digestive system! We can’t wait to see what exciting learning opportunities next half term brings!
Our dedicated School Council have been working very hard this month. Back in November, two children per class were chosen to represent them on the Council, and they meet regularly to help make decisions about the school and reporting back to their class. The Year 6 children take the positions of Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer and are responsible for running the meetings with the support of a member of staff. This month they have been doing some market research and finding out what their fellow learners ‘think is great about our school’. The results are in and being compiled at the moment, but to give you a taste of the responses, we have been told: “we like that it is small and like a family”, “we love our hot dinners”, “we like the new play equipment”, “we like the fact that people care about each other” The Council also decided which charities would benefit from the money raised within school. They did their own research into a variety of charities and decided to split the first £200 between 4 very good causes. What a tremendous amount they have achieved already!

The children have had amazing opportunities due to the cold weather this term. They have been exploring ice and how it feels, experimenting how it is made and also playing in the snow. An experiment of how to make ice encourages the children to think of where they should put different tubs of water and observe the changes it makes. Some of the children chose outside, some chose the fridge and a few chose the freezer. Opportunities of play was endless, adding tubs, animals and paints too! Seeing snow for the first time this year inspired the children to make snowflakes to dangle in the setting. Using scissors safely, cutting and identifying different shapes along with following simple instructions. Encouraging independent choices there are many with added glitter and sparkle. This opportunity has been revisited many times with the children improving in skill each time. Following this we have been looking at risks and how to solve them the children have taken this very seriously and use their own checklists to help assess the risks outside. This has supported role play extending play to people who help us with doctors, nurses, police people and firefighters. Lots of fun had by all!
Spring is just around the corner as we step into March. We are hoping the warmer weather is on its way and its lovely to see the start of daffodils blooming. We had our 1st cake sale of the year just before the half term break and thank everyone who donated and bought cakes. For World Book Day, we have invited parents to come in to share and read a story with their children. Stretton recognises the importance of reading and the children have enjoyed taking books home with their reading record. We are really looking forward to seeing some of our Stretton parents at our mother's day stay and play session.

Fourfields
Little Acorns
Fourfields has been very busy so far this year and we have very lucky to welcome a wide variety of visitors into the school, not all of them of the human variety! For the past few weeks Reception have had ‘People who help us’ in to visit them. This has included the Ambulance Service, the Police Service and the Fire Brigade. This meant that our whole school Fire Drill was even more exciting than usual because we actually had the Fire Crew with us! They staged what looked like a real fire so that there was smoke coming out of our bus and when we had evacuated the school the fire engine came onto the playground with its sirens sounding. It was a very exciting experience and I’m sure will make for some memorable pieces of writing from the children. Although there were some concerned children (and teachers) we were able to tell them this was just a practice and then let Reception classes get on with the important business of trying on breathing apparatus and seeing just how the Fire engine worked. Thanks to Mr Turner for organising this wonderful morning for us and to all our visitors into Reception this term. Reception are not the only ones to have received visitors, many other classes have been enjoying some ‘Wow’ experiences in school linked to their current curriculum. The Raptor Foundation visited us and Year 2 got to experience the wonder of birds of prey flying through our school hall. Most of these birds have been rescued and rehabilitated and gave a fantastic flying display. Year 2 are currently thinking about “Who rules the Animal Kingdom?” and I’m sure this visit will have given them much food for thought. Year 3 enjoyed a visit from Anglian Water who challenged them to build a Lego house. This had to be done in a certain time
Our pre-school invited their parents to join us for lunch. The children showed off their skills of pouring their own drinks, serving their own lunch and clearing away their plate a when they had finished. The parents very impressed with how independent the children are at nursery! The babies have enjoyed lots of messy play, painting, glue and sticking, shaving foam and water play. They have also celebrated Chinese New Year by exploring with chop sticks .
and demonstrating team work and collaboration. A wonderful time was had by all! In one Year One class, the children welcomed their parents in for Maths morning where they shared lots of their amazing learning and showed mums and dads the many different ways they apply their knowledge as well as showcasing the resources we use. I’m not sure who learned more? As you can see, we are really fortunate that at our school lots of people want to come and help. However, we are really short of help with something that is one of the stars in our crown- our garden! So many people love the fact that we have such a wonderful opportunity for the children and it is used to full effect, even supplying the school kitchen but Mrs Warrener, our dedicated gardener in school, can’t do it all alone. We were wondering if there were any parents, grandparents or indeed keen gardeners out there who might be able to spare some time, preferably over lunchtime to help the children in the garden. It is such a wonderful resource and we don’t want to see it deteriorate! If you think you can help, please get in touch with school. Thank you in anticipation!
We are currently taking bookings for September 2018 and also into 2019! If you would like to come and have a look around and are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or (littleacorns. daynursery@yahoo.co.uk)
Yaxley Infant School We have had a wonderful start to 2018 here at Yaxley Infant school. Children were excited to find clues had been left in the classroom. In Reception children were surprised to find eggs that had been left in the classroom. The buzz of excitement could be heard in the front office as the children investigated the clues and tried to find the dinosaurs that had left their eggs in the classroom. “It’s over here!” and “l think it might have eaten all our fruit snacks!!” could be heard from many excited voices. In Year 1, children could not believe what had happened to fruit and vegetables in the class. Carrots, pears and other fruits had been taped to the side of bookshelves, tables and some were even hanging from the ceiling! Children then read “Supertato: The Evil Pea Rules” by Sue Hendra. They discovered that it was the Evil Pea who had taped up all of the food- just for fun! In class discussion they decided that they needed to find the Evil Pea and so set about writing a Wanted poster. Children used “sizzling words” (adjectives) to describe the Evil Pea so he could be captured! Mrs Wood our cook has been keeping an eye
out for him, no sign of Evil Pea at the moment. In other news, we are continuing to explore and develop our practise in “Maths Mastery” and “Enquiry Based Learning”. Both of which are school priorities for this year. Working closely with other schools in the local area and with leading teachers we are hoping to take our children’s learning even further! In the April article we will let you know how we have done this and also share with you our children’s views. If your child is due to start school in September this year and you would like to visit us please contact us on (01733 240918) or email us office@yaxley.cambs.sch. uk we look forward to meeting you and your child.

Your green piece of perfection Sisters Sarah and Jo run our local GreenThumb lawn treatment service and look after around 2000 lawns in our area. With their long careers in horticulture they’re always on hand to give advice on how to achieve a great looking lawn. Sarah and Jo’s three top tips for looking after lawns …
There really is a right and a wrong way to mow! Correct mowing can make a vast difference to how good your lawn looks. The essential steps are - make sure your mower has a sharp blade, don’t cut too short (no lower than 25mm/1”), cut regularly and remove the clippings so your lawn doesn’t get long and weak. This will encourage healthy roots, transforming an ordinary lawn into a real showpiece.
Regularly feed the grass and control weeds Grass is a tender plant that has to cope with the rigours of home life. Weed seed will continually germinate as seed blows in from neighbouring locations so keep
on top of weeds and regularly feed the lawn. At GreenThumb our four seasonal treatments are specially customised for the time of year. These target weeds, feed the lawn and control moss - a hassle free way to a green, lush and weed free lawn.
Keep out moss Moss thrives in damp conditions and unless you tackle what’s causing it you won’t reduce it in the long run. In the Peterborough area our main causes of moss are heavy and compacted soil which restricts water drainage. Also, lawns that have a lot of dead matter in them, called ‘thatch’ are also very susceptible. The best way to tackle moss is to hollow-tine aerate and scarify the lawn every year. It’s energetic work so if you don’t want to do it just call Sarah and Jo at GreenThumb!
DON’T MISS OUT! Contact us now to take advantage of our great spring offers and a FREE lawn analysis. Call Sarah or Jo on 01733 755028 or email them at peterborough@greenthumb.co.uk www.greenthumb.co.uk

Animal Rehabilitation Centre opens at Cromwell Vets We are excited to announce the imminent opening of our very own Animal Rehabilitation Centre in Sawtry, offering physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture and K-Laser®. We’re extra excited about the addition of hydrotherapy to our services with a state-of-theart underwater treadmill. So let us tell you more about hydrotherapy and how it can help you pet.
What is an underwater treadmill?
The underwater treadmill is exactly what it sounds like, it’s a treadmill belt enclosed in a tank that gradually fills with water. The water height is tailored to the pet and level of rehabilitation allowing them to exercise while taking advantage of the therapeutic and buoyant effects of the water.
Why is exercising in water so beneficial?
Exercising on an underwater treadmill takes advantage of certain properties that water possesses. The buoyancy, resistance and hydrostatic pressure created by water all help pets on their road to recovery. This basically means pets can exercise in water while their body weight is supported (higher the water level, the more support given), they can work their muscles and joints safely against a resistance and the pressure of the water on their body also helps to reduce pain, inflammation as well as improve circulation and lymphatic drainage.
What conditions can hydrotherapy help?
My pet doesn’t like swimming; is hydrotherapy still possible?
Is it safe for my pet?
My pet isn’t injured; can they use the underwater treadmill for fitness?
Many ailing pets can benefit from hydrotherapy – especially those suffering from joint and muscle problems such as arthritis. It is also especially useful in the rehabilitation of pets post-operatively to help them get their strength and joint function back. Underwater treadmills also have great results with neurological patients as it helps to trigger the normal sequence of their legs to walk while their body weight is supported. Hydrotherapy of any kind can only be carried out with your vet’s permission. Before they sign the consent form, your vet will carry out a health check on your pet to ensure they are happy for the treatment. Our physiotherapists will be monitoring your pet throughout the session to make sure they are coping well with the exercise. As part of the professional standards, hydrotherapy pools and treadmills are treated with chlorine and tested three times a day much like the water in a swimming pool. Our new underwater treadmill service meets these standards. Pets are also showered after their session to remove the chlorine from their coat.
The underwater treadmill is very different from swimming in a river, lake or swimming pool as the pet always has their feet on a solid surface. Also, the water fills gradually from the bottom, so the pet doesn’t have to actually step into the water; it just fills gently around them. Added to that, the sides of the tank are all clear, so your pet will be able to see you at all times – very reassuring if they are nervous.
Yes. Our new centre offers fitness sessions, which are ideal for keeping sporting and working dogs in peak fitness, improving or maintaining condition of show dogs or just keeping your pet fit. Exercising on the underwater treadmill can also be an integral part of a weight loss programme for your pet.
Is the underwater treadmill just for dogs or can other animals use it too? Dogs, cats and even rabbits can be successfully treated on an underwater treadmill.

There is much to be said about the dying of the DVD in favour of Netflix & Amazon, amongst other premium subscription sites. However, in the unlikeliest of places, DVDs seem to be making a huge impact. If, like me, you love a good old DVD to put into a player, then you may find some absolute bargains in Poundland. It may seem a bit strange, but the way I see it, Poundland is effectively like a car boot sale for DVDs; you will always find something you never went looking for, but find yourself drawn to buying for no reason other than you need to watch the film again, drudging up some forgotten emotions shoved deep into your psyche. Seems a little much, I know, sorry, but Poundland has a great collection of DVDs that you really should check out. My top bargains are below: Drop Dead Fred Rik Mayall (R.I.P) stars as a grotesquely immature imaginary friend who comes back to ‘life’ to help his previously young friend regain some sort of perspective. Brilliantly funny, brilliantly childish and brilliantly quintessentially British. Human Traffic A docu-film following the hedonistic clubland life of a group of friends over a weekend in Cardiff. Starring Danny Dyer (as one of my favourite characters ever, Moff) and John Simm, it shows the club lifestyle in the good ol’ days whilst breaking the 4th wall (way before Deadpool did it by the way).

Uncle Buck John Candy stars as a totally out of touch Black Sheep of the family Uncle, who is called upon by his brother to watch his kids whilst he deals with his wifes sick mother. Hilarity ensues in this John Hughes film that strikes you as similar to his most famous film, Home Alone. Brilliant though! Blades of Glory John Heder and Will Ferrell star in this utter mickey take of the serious ‘sport’ of figureskating. Hated by each other, both are disqualified from participating and must join forces to compete again, whilst fighting of the overly awkward incestuous Van Waldenberg siblings, played by Amy Poehler and Will Arnett. Hilarious, if you like Will Ferrell. There are so many real classics to be found hidden away in the DVD aisle in Poundland, which I absolutely urge you to go and check out! Mother’s Day Poem Alison Harnick
With Mother's Day approaching in March I thought it would be an appropriate time to mention a special lady close to my heart, who I believe is an amazing mum!
T
his is one of my closest friends her name is Kerri Lyford. She has a gorgeous son called Luke Lyford who is 15 years old. Luke is a wonderful person, very loving and extremely clever. Kerri has been through some dreadful and difficult times with Luke as he suffers from severe epilepsy, diabetes and also Asperger Syndrome. We all take for granted having a healthy child. I have watched Kerri over the years go through such hard times whilst caring for Luke, and she does an amazing job with all of his medical conditions. I have never heard her complain, she just cracks on with it, in the
26
most inspirational way that I can’t put into words how proud myself and all of her friends are of her. Kerri throughout all of her struggles never loses her fantastic and unique sense of humour; I am truly honoured to call her my friend. Whilst going through a difficult phase with Luke recently, Kerri put pen to paper and wrote a poem to express her thoughts and emotions. When I read it my heart melted and I wanted everyone to read it. We should all take a moment to be thankful for what we have, and take a look around, because there are people right beside you, battling with everyday life. Kerri you are one in a million! Here is her poem.
My darling Luke I watch you fall I cannot control it ... not at all Your seizures take our lives by force But you my baby... suffer the most ... of course Eleven years I’ve watched with pain Countless nights with you I've lain Broken bones and blood galore The times I've found you on the floor. Lumber punctures, scans and tests because apparently ‘the docs know best’ On life support. Five years since then.. I thought you'd gone. But you fought again. I live on edge day after day ... I watch you fit, I pray and pray... People look and people stare. I wish someone would help ...someone would care... People think you’re a lot of work... They don't see the cuddles. The hugs... my perk! To me.. My love. My life ...my son. Mummas here my precious one... Kerri Lyford

Of course, if forward planning is not your strongpoint then there are plenty of ways to sort out a last minute gift or treat as well.

Flowers
A day of pampering
As old a tradition as Mother's Day itself, but always a winne, what woman doesn’t love getting flowers to spruce up her home and make her feel special? Try to avoid getting the last wilting bunch from the petrol station and instead order a specially-made bunch in advance from Elite Flowers by Nina 07984648573. If you know her favourite flowers or favourite colours then make sure they are included, as such extra attention to detail will make your mum feel special.
Personalised mugs/key rings and photo albums offer a different type of gift. If creativity is not your strong point, Just for You in the Broadway Shopping Centre will help you to find the perfect gift. Check out their advert on page 3. A relaxing beauty treatment, whether it’s nails, massage, hair cut or a spray tan. Treatments from expert professionals may once have been the preserve of the rich and famous, but not anymore.
