Please contact holmewi2015@gmail.com for further details.

YAXLEY WI Hope everyone had a pleasant Easter and didn't over indulge on chocolate eggs as I did! At our March meeting the speaker was Laurence Seaton of Buttercross Auctions. He told us of how on retirement he thought that Whittlesey town centre was looking rather drab, with several of the surrounding buildings being closed and empty, and decided to run an auction at the Buttercross with profits going to charity. This was so successful that he eventually had to relocate to the Falcon Inn as he needed more space. Laurence does house clearances and will sell anything and everything from a pair of shears to a sapphire ring, and his auctions are held approximately every 6 weeks.

As well as relating stories about his auctions Laurence brought along several items (some removed from his house without telling his wife!) and we had a quiz about the origin. Date and value of the items. Despite some of us being fans of Bargain Hunt & Flog it we still had difficulty getting the answers right! A very interesting speaker and it may be a coincidence but I didn't notice any empty buildings around Whittlesey town centre when I last visited! Our speakers for 9 May will be from Hambledon Bakery so we look forward to getting some tips for our baking!

The meeting will be held as usual at 7.30 in the upstairs room (stairlift available) at the Lancaster Club, Main Street, Yaxley. Visitors welcome.

Most years each Club obtain funds by holding an annual quiz which are well supported and mostly raise about £2000 on each occasion, with teams of quizzers going home having spent enjoyable and fun evenings. This is one example of fund raising activities. Other examples of giving help to local and national good causes is, not by giving money which we call purse service, but by spending time and effort. For example the collection of empty aluminium drinks cans, removing the ring-pulls which are sent separately to the Philippines where people fashion them into remarkably beautiful bags and purses. The cans are crushed and sent for recycling to fund a helipad at a British hospital, which requires one million cans to fund one

helipad. Presently only the newest hospitals have one. Rotarians also support people who are living with dementia in our City by running a monthly memory club named 'Crocus cafe' in cooperation with the Salvation Army. In addition others help to provide special sailing boats and then organise and operate Sailability at Ferry Meadows, whereby persons with disabilities are trained to go sailing. These are just a few examples of highly rewarding work undertaken by volunteers. A Rotary Club meets weekly and if you might be interested in joining please don't hesitate to get in touch, as you would be very welcome to come along a few times before deciding whether or not it's for you.

If you are interested please email orton.rotary@gmail.com Here at Green Energy Switch we’re passionate about helping people save energy and, in turn, money ... money that people work so hard to earn but that can so easily disappear through energy costs Sarah Steels, Operations Manager

Green Energy Switch A good starting point for saving money is to switch your electricity/gas tariff/ supplier and it’s not the hassle that people often imagine it is…we’ve set up a freephone number and simple website that’s easy to use and impartial. Simply, have your last bill handy and call 0800 783 4761 or if you’re internet savvy then visit save.greenenergyswitch.co.uk The next bit requires a little more effort, effort though that again saves your hard-earned cash!

Behaviour change

You’ve heard it all before, but these changes do make a difference. Lights Do you need your porch light on? Do you need to light a hallway area? Left the kitchen light on? Time to switch them off…. collectively and over time you’ll save pounds! Cup of tea? Next time you boil the kettle think about how much water you’re boiling, again…why would you pay to heat water you’re not even going to use!

Use your curtains to keep heat in and cold out, not just for your privacy! Appliances on standby? What are you waiting for…? Turn them off and save!

Changes in the home Lightbulbs switch to LED, the power an LED uses is much less than standard energy saving bulbs, and they turn on instantly when compared to standard energy bulbs. Draft proofing All those little gaps around windows and doors? Fill them! You’ve paid to make your house warm, so you’ll keep that warmth in! Love a bath? While we all love a soak, did you know that taking a bath uses two and a half times the amount of water (that you have to pay to heat) than a shower does! Go Smart A smart meter is a great way of tracking your energy usage and being aware of how much energy your appliances use! An added bonus is you’ll never have brave the cold to read your meter again! Smart meters are free, just contact your energy supplier!

Happy saving! Call 0800 783 4761 or visit www.greenenergyswitch.co.uk

Community Champion? We're looking for volunteers to join our team of community champions across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. As part of their voluntary activities, community champions support and participate in local initiatives and campaigns, helping to spread the word to local communities about keeping safe. They make a huge contribution to the Service and help work towards the vision for a safe community where there are no preventable deaths or injuries in fires or other emergencies. Champions cover everything from fire safety in the home, to road and water safety, including:

This year, the semi-finals are being held at Pontins, Camber Sands. 50 chosen contestants will attend and 10 will be chosen to go through to the national finals. There are nearly 20,000 entries each year and I am lucky to be part of one of the 200 remaining . I attended Farcet Primary School and then went on to Stanground Academy and I’m now attending Stamford College and studying beauty therapy. A big part of Miss England is the charity aspect. This year I have decided to raise money for Papyrus, a UK charity for the prevention of young suicide. I feel this charity is close to my heart. I have created a fundraising page on my Facebook where donations would be gratefully received. I’m hoping to do some more fundraising events in the future. cook wise

cookwise More of us are turning to vegetarianism thanks to an abundance of scientific research that demonstrates both the health and environmental benefits of a plant-based diet. By Sarah Davey

National Vegetarian Week 13-19 May An estimated 70 percent of all diseases, including one-third of all cancers, are related to diet. A vegetarian diet reduces the risk for chronic degenerative diseases such as obesity, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and certain types of cancer including colon, breast, prostate, stomach, lung and oesophageal cancer. A vegetarian diet tends to increase bone strength. When there isn't enough calcium in the bloodstream, our bodies leach it from existing bone. This results in our skeletons gradually becoming porous and losing strength. Although you can take supplements, it's better to obtain calcium from your diet because food also supplies other nutrients such as phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin D, that are necessary for the body to be able to absorb and make use of calcium. Even if you have to avoid dairy, calcium-rich foods include beans, tofu, plant-based milks like soy, oat, rice or almond, and dark green vegetables such as broccoli, and kale. For those of us going through the menopause many vegetables and fruits are rich in phytoestrogens, the plant-based chemical compounds that mimic the behaviour of oestrogen. Maintaining a balance of these in your diet helps ensure a more comfortable passage through menopause. Soy is by far the most abundant natural source of phytoestrogens, but they are

also found in apples, beets, cherries, dates, garlic, olives, plums, raspberries, squash and sweet potatoes. Vegetarians tend to have more energy. Whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables are high in complex carbohydrates, so they supply the body with plenty of energizing fuel. Vegetarians also suffer less with constipation, haemorrhoids and diverticulitis! Eating a lot of vegetables necessarily means consuming more fibre, which absorbs water and bulks up, helping your stools stay soft, so waste can be easily pushed out of the body. A vegetarian diet is more environmentally friendly. Much of the grain we grow is fed to animals raised for slaughter. As a rough guide it takes 2,500 gallons of water, 5.5Kg / 12lbs of grain, nearly 16Kg /35lbs of topsoil and the energy equivalent of 4.5L /1 gallon of petrol, to produce one pound of beef! A vegetarian diet can sustain many more people, so is a more efficient use of resources. Finally, a vegetarian diet is cheaper. Eating vegetables, grains and fruits in place of beef, chicken and fish would cut individual food bills by an average of £500 per year. If you are thinking about becoming vegetarian, or even just incorporating more vegetarian meals into your normal diet, there is lots of information and some great recipes on the website www.nationalvegetarianweek.org

Groundcare covered at RTC RTC Groundcare, formerly known as The Peterborough Mower & Groundcare Centre, has everything you need to keep even the largest gardens in trim at its large new showroom just off Newark Road, Peterborough. New and used equipment, from electric and petrol hedge trimmers to ride on tractors and the increasingly popular Husqvarna Automowers, as well as a popular parts, service and repair scheme, and product hire, are all available. Owner Tom Calton, who runs the business with wife Melanie says: “we needed increased capacity for RTC, which also includes a thriving Plant Services dealership and a hire service for the construction industry, so this new site is ideal for us.” RTC Groundcare saw a 200 per cent increase in the sales of Automowers in 2018. The so-called ‘robo mowers’ are the ultimate labour-saving device for people who don’t have the time - or the inclination - to maintain their lawns, yet still want their gardens to look good. “The technology behind the Husqvarna Automower is second to none,” explains Tom. “They include GPS tracking, and will find their way around even the largest garden. They automatically adjust themselves to higher growth areas and have a memory which

retains the information. Automowers can be monitored and adjusted via a smartphone app, so you can keep your lawn in trim while you are on holiday. They will also mow at night, helping to keep moles and foxes away.” For customers wanting a trial before the purchase of an Automower, or for someone who wishes to prepare their lawn in the run up to a special event such as wedding or party, a hire scheme is available. Additionally, a working Automower can be seen in situ tending the green at the Thorpe Wood Golf course, Peterborough. RTC’s garden equipment maintenance service, carried out within a 50 mile radius, is also proving popular, with engineers carrying out repairs and services at customers’ homes, saving them the inconvenience of transporting heavy and unwieldy machinery, or doing without their lawnmowers for weeks at a time. In the winter months, a hibernation service is offered for petrol mowers, where machines are cleaned, drained and refilled with Aspen fuel which does not evaporate. RTC also offers a storage programme for Automowers. In winter, they are cleaned, the software is updated and they can be safely stored for customers until the spring season.

As May begins we hope the frost and cold are finally over so our plants can grow and bloom

JK SHEDS

May frosts are not unheard of and can severely damage fruit and potato crops. In recent years May has generally been warm though like our winters quite often wetter than the norm, it’s now that slugs and snails can become the bane of all plant growers. It is so easy to reach for slug repellents to defend our plants but doing so is as much a blow to our friends the hedgehog, the toad, the thrush and the beetles to name but a few who are also laid low and unproductive by these pernicious chemicals. The chemicals in most slug pellets are found in high concentration in most of the mollusc predators and even in domestic cats and dogs, whilst the water companies spend thousands removing them from our drinking water. Recent estimates suggest that almost two thirds of the plant damage from slugs and snails in the UK is perpetrated by non-native species that have naturalised in the country through importation of plants and soil. Also the majority

of these maligned creatures predominantly feast on dead and decaying plant matter rather than healthy growth. And of course there is the fastest moving slug the predatory leopard slug that dines on other slugs moving at an incredible four inches per minute to hunt down its slower moving cousins. Far better to look to companion planting, predator encouragement, abrasive surfaces and copper tape to protect key plants encouraging nature to symbiotically balance in our gardens once more. Companion planting can either take the form of planting something that repels slugs and snails or something they love as a sacrifice to protect your key plants. Predators can be encouraged by creating beetle banks, hibernaculum for amphibians, creating a pond and via hedgehog homes. A number of non-chemical slug an snail prevention techniques have recently been trialled by the RHS to see which are effective and which are just myth. But all of these will lead to a healthier balanced plot than continued use of slug pellets to which there are signs that some slugs are developing immunity.

Good-bye April, Hello May!

farm land

farmland “The month of May was come, when every lusty heart beginneth to blossom, and to bring forth fruit” Sir Thomas Malory

I may be a little unusual in this, but when spring comes, my mind tends to wander to thoughts not (just) of love, but that other delight long-associated with the season: asparagus! The asparagus season typically begins on St George’s Day (23 April, need I remind you) and runs right through to Midsummer’s Eve (21 June). I tend not to think of the vitamin K, folate, fibre, and potassium, or that it is low in calories, low in fat, and cholesterol free, I don’t even pay too much attention to the studies that have shown that may help with hangovers; rather I think of lovely, tender asparagus cradling a runny egg and perched atop an English muffin, or even a slice of black pudding, or perhaps a delicious, healthy pasta primavera – spaghetti with broad beans, leeks, and asparagus tips, or simply dripping in butter as the perfect accompaniment to just about anything at this time of year. It may not be the love we often think of – romantic, ‘eros’ love – or agapé, storge, or philia, but I do have a special kind of love that I reserve for asparagus alone… …oh, and rhubarb of course! Rhubarb crumble is another herald of spring which I shall

be enjoying after my asparagus-centred main course. But they’re the main objects of my affection: asparagus and rhubarb. And new potatoes, obviously. Oh, and lamb. And beef, mint, lettuce, gooseberry, spinach, cabbage, and wow – what a month May is! My grandfather would never leave the farm in May, his favourite month, and whether that’s down to the delicious early harvest, or the beauty of the countryside springing to life, I can see why. In season I like to get my asparagus straight from the farm gate, and whilst there are a number of local growers, I tend to buy mine from Mike Ashby at Rectory Farm, Polebrook. Will De Yaxley Mums in School Day

Folksworth Pre-school Being part of our local community Our ethos encourages the children to show kindness, to be determined and to have curiosity What better way to teach our children their place within our community than going out into our local environment. Over the last month we have been on many walks to create our own map of Folksworth. We have found the areas important to the children and have encouraged them to take photographs everything from a muddy path, to the road leading to school and the gate to the field. During our walks we would take a rubbish bag with us to help teach the importance of caring for

the environment. To learn taking responsibility for our actions, we talked about the importance of closing the field gate behind us to stop the sheep escaping. These skills may seem simple but they are the first steps in learning a sense of community, by actively being a part of it. We also want to show respect to all those we meet along the way by demonstrating how to be polite and respectful. The children have loved the different journeys we have undertaken and are very keen for our next adventure.

Holme Village Pre-school Here at Holme Village pre-school we are very excited to welcome a new manager, Laura Hurst. She has been a manager for over 6 years now and can’t wait to get to know our families and children. This term we will be concentrating on getting our children ‘School ready’ through play-based activities. We are very excited about our school transitions and will be working very closely with the prospective schools

in and around Yaxley, Holme, Hampton and Sawtry. Did you also know that Holme Village Pre-school now offer extended sessions? We are open 8:30am to 5:30pm Monday to Thursday, term-time. With only being a few short miles from Yaxley, why not pop over to discuss your childcare needs.

On Friday 22 March, we held our annual “Mums in School Day”, in recognition and celebration of Mothering Sunday Each year we dedicate a special day to all of our Mums and female relatives, so that we can share with them how much we value them and what they do for us all. Over 130 Mums came to school throughout the day and some of them stayed for lunch too, enjoying some welcome down time with their child(ren). In Year Three the children spent time thinking about their favourite memories with their mothers. They all had a good giggle whilst they shared the many events that had happened in their lives. They Mums and children then went on to complete many activities together including: Playing “Cats Cradle”, spent time in the ICT Suite teaching their Mums how to do coding and the Mums helped the children with sewing. In Year Four the children read out some of the incredible poetry they had written all about their Mums and special ladies in their lives – this had the desired effect of making our mums quite emotional (happy tears, of course!) During the day in the classrooms, the children and Mums made clay busts, and mosaics which

linked to their topic around the Romans. It was incredibly helpful to have so many helping hands to get the job done. In Year Five it was a hive of activity with each class engaging in a variety of activities such as: making clay pinch bowls, models using cardboard boxes, cross stitch and glitter jars of positivity for the Mums to look at on their “bad days” and help them to think positive thoughts. A “Supermum” comic was created, as were coupons, which the children gave to their Mums with pledges of help and love to use throughout the year. In Year Six the children were busy showing their Mums how to draw and then stitch geometric patterns. They did this by demonstrating how to use approximate circles and marked a point on the circumference. They then plotted lines across the circle to equally match the marks made. These drawings were then turned into stitched works of art! The ladies were all treated to tea and biscuits at break-time and a special celebratory assembly where the children shared their thoughts, memories, poems and prayers. A lovely day was had by all!

Then who better than Nora Blackwell who has been the Lancaster Club Steward for the past fourteen years. Nora moved to Yaxley when she was 18 months old. She was educated at the old Yaxley Infants School, and was one of the first students at William de Yaxley Junior School and then went on to Stanground College. On leaving school, Nora initially worked at the old Norman Cross Motel on the A1, learning the catering and bar trades, and gaining further experience at other hotels around the

UK, working with people she loved and still does today. Returning to Yaxley she worked at the Hatchet and Bill, the Bull Hotel and other similar local establishments. Taking on the challenging role as Club Steward came as a dream job for Nora. Using all of her past experience, Nora introduced new ideas and offers to increase turnover, as well as attracting new members, making it a primary venue in Yaxley. Why not pop in for a drink and see what’s on offer? ... and say hi to Nora!

paws for thought

pawsforthought Vaccination: clearing up the myths

For further information about vaccinations, please speak to your vet when you next visit or call 01487 800199

It can be an area of controversy in the human and animal world alike ... are vaccinations necessary?

Now we can’t answer for the human medical world (we’re vets!) but we can tell you more about the science of vaccination and what we vaccinate your pet against. Vaccination reminds the pet’s immune system how to defend against the disease again.

Why do we need to vaccinate? Cases of infectious diseases were once seen regularly by vets and thousands of pets died each year. The ease of pet travel has also facilitated the spread of disease of once isolated diseases to all over the country and even introduced new strains of some diseases to the UK. Experts have attributed much of this to lack of vaccination with the larger outbreaks appearing in countries where the vaccination protocol is less robust.

The debate around the human MMR vaccination might seem like a whole other subject but the principles of vaccination and evidence follows through to our pets’ vaccinations. Infectious diseases have not been completely eradicated but the frequency of cases, and deaths from these diseases, has dramatically reduced since the introduction of pet vaccination.

How often do we need to vaccinate our pets? This is another area that has been under some scrutiny with some people in the pet world believing vaccination is only necessary every three years. However, to keep your dog protected against leptospirosis and kennel cough, and your cat protected against cat flu and leukaemia, an annual vaccination is required. This ensures your pet is getting what they need as often as necessary to stay protected and no more than that.

What diseases can we vaccinate against? Dogs We vaccinate against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, leptospirosis and kennel cough. Cats We vaccinate against rhinotracheitis, calicivirosis (together essentially “cat flu”), leukaemia and panleucopenia (feline enteritis). Rabbits Myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease.

Under 7s - Black and Blue

ICA Napoli Under 13s (from September) are looking for new players to join an established team. The team is registered in the Peterborough & District Junior Alliance League and play their home games at Queen’s Park, Yaxley. Training is held on Thursday evenings at Middletons Road 3G pitch, Yaxley. Players will enjoy a welcoming, positive and encouraging team environment that revolves around player development. The team will be managed and coached by CRC cleared, FA Qualified Coaches and supported by the extensive coaching network at ICA Sports. Players will need to be in current school Year 7 (Year 8 from September).

Team

Yaxley FC would ike to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported them this season. As you can see from the Evo-Stik League South table our attendances have been brilliant, so a big thank you to everyone.

As the end of the season approaches for the under sevens teams, we look back with a sense of pride as to how far our teams have come. It’s been an exciting eight months for this section of the YFC youth development, having gone from only six players at the start, to a situation where 19 players are now in the squad and two teams (The blacks and the Blues) have formed to ensure maximum playing time for all. However, this is not a numbers game. It is more about the incredible player development that has been achieved. Players that only eight months ago, had never kicked a ball before are now comfortable participating in tournaments. New skills are being learnt every week

good sport

goodsport

and the club is excited to be taking both teams through a summer of tournaments and friendlies in early preparation for the next season. This in part is due to the excellent facilities at Yaxley FC. The all-weather, 4g pitch surface has meant the players have not missed a training session and the parents have been able to keep warm in the clubhouse, knowing their children are being safely taught on the fenced pitch by qualified coaches. Which while we are on the subject of coaching, this month we welcome the experienced Ian Hair to the coaching staff who is another strong addition to a blossoming youth set up. The teams will be playing and training up until July before a four week break, when they will return to the heady heights of the under 8s section.

Yaxley FC are looking to encourage more youth team’s boys, mixed or girl’s teams to the club. If you are an U9’s, U10’s, and U12 team for the 2019/2020 season, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Scott Bogusz, scottbogusz@me.com

There’s not been a lot of rain, but still our “Green” looks good and is open for the start of the season and playing as well as ever Huge thanks go out to our chief grounds-man John Thurston and all those he co-opts to help, we are now seeing everyone back playing again after the long winter break. As always at the start of a new season, expectations are high, we are all looking forward to some good bowling sunshine and hope that one of our teams can triumph in the league or cup and that individual members go far in county knock-out competitions. The first game of the season is a warmup friendly against Whittlesey

Town. This is followed by our official opening game which sees Captain Bruce Saint’s team take on our President Mary Wiles team, in a hotly contested friendly fixture - the result will be in next months Gazette. There have been one or two changes with the team captains this year. After gaining promotion to the premier division, Hazel Bass continues as Captain of the Falcones, with Rob Dearnley returning from injury, to Captain the Kites with the hope of getting them back in the Premier division.

Up and coming events: Sunday 26 May Mitcham Cup Sunday 30 June Goodwin Cup Monday 15 July Yaxley Open Triples Please look out for our bowls drives, when anyone can come and have a go. Also, every Saturday morning, is a beginner’s roll up, when you can try your hand at the noble sport. Just turn up with some flat, sole-less shoes; the club will provide the other equipment necessary.

Strength and balance classes A local women has put a spring in her step after joining strength and balance classes that are keeping her doing the things she enjoys Rita (pictured) aged 77 from Ely joined the fun and sociable class at the local library having heard about it from a friend after a recent fall. The class featured as part of the successful Stronger for Longer campaign. Rita said: “The class has helped me with my walking, strength, balance, and posture, along with confidence outside of the class.” “I can see the difference in myself, I do a lot of walking and since going to classes I am now able to walk that bit longer without any problems – which means I can go out more and enjoy with my friends. “Coming to the class will improve your well‐being and help you to keep active. You will meet new people and it can be fun.” Since the launch of the Stronger for Longer campaign back in October, over 100 new people have joined strength and balance classes around the county and are now stronger and steadier. Over 2,300 people have also downloaded our Supersix leaflet, which is helping people to do strength

and balance exercises at home at least twice a week. Huntingdonshire district council’s One Leisure Active Lifestyle team run many falls prevention classes throughout the district. You can pick up a leaflet from your local One Leisure centre, GP surgery or library. Alternatively the brochure can be viewed online at huntingdonshire.gov.uk/rightstart. The Stronger for Longer campaign involves a range of partners, including Cambridgeshire County Council, District Councils, local NHS, Living Sport & Huntingdonshire district council.

New scheme offers Essentials for young people in Yaxley An initiative has been launched in Yaxley that distributes free toiletries, sanitary items and underwear to young people Representatives from the Police, Cambridgeshire County Council, Huntingdonshire District Council, Yaxley Partnership, Yaxley Youth Club, Gemma’s Hearts, Yaxley Football Club and the Young People’s Counselling Service gathered at Yaxley Library in April to launch ‘Essentials by Sue’ with County Council Community Champion Adela Costello (Deputy Mayor Ramsey Town Council) and project founder Sue Loaker, who introduced the scheme. Toothbrushes, sanitary towels, hairbrushes, shower gel, deodorants and male and female underwear are just a selection of goods on offer to teenagers who may be unable to buy the items themselves or may not be receiving them at home. Children who do not have these essential items can be bullied and often exclude themselves from school and social activities. In a Heartbeat

What are ectopic beats? Ectopic heartbeats are extra heartbeats that occur just before a regular beat. Ectopic beats are normal ad usually they are not a cause for concern. About 70% of medically normal adults without any symptoms at all have ectopic beats if monitored over 24 hours. They are far less common in children and are more likely to be a result of an underlying heart abnormality in those cases. There are two types of ectopic beat PAC - Premature atrial contractions, which begin in the upper chambers of the heart, PVC Premature ventricular contractions, which begin in the lower chambers of the heart. An ectopic beat might be felt as an extra awareness of the heart beating; a feeling of faintness; a sensation of the heart stopping for a second, or a fluttering sensation in the chest. The fact that some people become aware of their ectopic beats doesn’t automatically mean there is a problem. Most commonly

people who become aware of their ectopic beats are also susceptible to anxiety. What tends to happen is that during an episode of anxiety their system is flooded with adrenalin and their heart begins to race. They become aware of their heart racing, and then suddenly they experience a (perfectly normal) ectopic beat, only it feels anything but normal to them because their heart is already racing. They can then become hyper-aware of any perceived differences in rhythm, and this can feed their anxiety. Most GPs can diagnose ectopic heartbeats from symptoms and by listening with a stethoscope. Sometimes they will also arrange a precautionary electrocardiogram (ECG). If someone is aware of their ectopic beat only when they are sitting quietly, this is less of a concern than if the ectopics become noticeable

after exercise, such as running upstairs. Ectopics are also of more concern if there is a history of a previous heart attack, or a family of heart disease. A GP will want to rule out complications such as ventricular tachycardia and arrhythmia. If further investigation is required the GP might order an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound), or a coronary angiography, an MRI, a CT scan, or exercise testing. In most cases ectopic heartbeats do not require treatment; however, there are certain well-known triggers. It can be helpful to review all medications and their possible interactions, stop smoking, reduce alcohol and caffeine intake, and reduce stress and anxiety as much as possible. Remember, most ectopic heartbeats are not a cause for concern, but if they are persistent, or you are worried, then consult your GP.

Single or double trade? With the mandation of MTD for registered businesses for VAT with a turnover exceeding the VAT threshold (£85,000) that came into force from 1 April 2019, care should be taken if you try to separate a business for VAT purposes. A recent case heard by the First Tier Tribunal (FTT) makes it important to get matters correct and professional help. A taxpayer’s main trade was as a plasterer but he also carried out liquid floor screeding. He was a sole trader until 2013 but then formed a partnership with his wife for the screeding. The aim was to separate the businesses so that only the partnership was VAT registered even though its turnover was under the threshold. This allowed it to claim the input tax on materials. However, the plastering business was not registered and this allowed the taxpayer to offer his customers lower rates than would be the case if he had to add VAT. HMRC said there had only ever been a single sole trader business

and the combined turnover of both activities required a retrospective registration date of 1.3.13. The taxpayer appealed. The FTT was satisfied that there were two businesses. Further, the activities each had different customer bases in different locations. The taxpayer made some efforts to present them as separate businesses issuing invoices with separate headers However, this was not always carried out consistently. Sometimes invoices included both activities and only one employer’s liability insurance policy was held. But overall, the FTT decided it was the taxpayer’s intention for the businesses to be separate. The taxpayer’s appeal was allowed. (Darren Vaughan v HMRC)

Cybercrime – don’t fall foul of the on-line fraudsters

Cybercrime has reached epidemic levels in the UK – with police reporting that more than £190,000 a day is lost by victims.

The hacking of social media and email accounts is rife, and according to Action Fraud (which is run by the City of London Police) £34.6 million was reported to be stolen from victims between April and September 2018; an increase of almost a quarter (24%) on the previous six months. Over 13,000 people in the UK reported cyber-crimes over the six months, with more than 5,000 of those having had their social media or email accounts hacked – costing victims £14.8 million. Closer to home, an initiative to crackdown on scammers across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and aim to make the county scam-free, is gaining momentum. Safe Local Trades is delighted to be supporting the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which includes Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Police and Crime Commissioner Jason Ablewhite, Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council. CAPASP is committed to working towards stamping out scams; from postal to online fraud to telephone scams doorstep rogue traders. In the case of cybercrime, fraudsters trick internet and email users into giving personal details, including financial information, in order to steal their money.

Romance Scams - a confidence scam whereby a criminal displays fake romantic intentions towards a victim in order to gain their affection to then extort money Impersonation of UK officials - criminals may impersonate UK officials to obtain personal information by claiming that the victim is due a refund or must make an urgent payment File Hijacking - where a hacker enters your computer and accesses your files, locking you out of them. The hacker then demands a ransom (usually money) before he will give you your files back. Screenshot Managing - where hackers enter your computer and take screenshots of your display. This can help them get information about you, get passwords, or even blackmail you. Keylogging- where hackers can record your keystrokes on your computer, thus gaining your passwords or other personal info. Ad Clicking- where hackers encourage you to click on a link (perhaps by email, or on a webpage) which will then open malware or simply ask for your personal info.

However, you can take steps to help protect yourself:

• Ensure that your devices all have up to date anti-virus security • Install a firewall and anti-spyware Some kinds of online scams on your computer to be aware of: • Ensure that you update your Phishing - where you receive an email software (including Windows or iOS) when prompted to do so; that pretends to be from an authority postponing an update can leave (e.g., your bank) in which you’re asked to give out your passwords or personal you vulnerable information such as your address, • Ensure that your devices are password protected with a strong telephone number, or other data. password - you can find the official Pharming - the fraudulent practice governmental advice on creating of directing online users to a fake website, which mimics the appearance passwords at cyberaware.gov.uk/passwords of a real / legitimate one If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, visit www.safelocaltrades.com/consumers/advice/friends-against-scams
