The Moon. Beautiful and mysterious, a heavenly body that links us to our ancestors who gazed up in wonder at the same awe-inspiring sight that we do today.
I Celebrations at RAFA Lancaster Club to mark start of RAD 100 year On Sunday 1 April this year, the Royal Air Force (RAF) reached its centenary having been formed near the end of WW1 in April 1918. The RAF was created from the then existing Royal Flying Corps which was under army control and the Royal Naval Air Service.
A
s a result, the RAF became the very first dedicated air force in the world and a separate military service with its own ministry. To celebrate this significant achievement the Royal Air Forces Association’s Yaxley Branch and Lancaster Club in Main Street, Yaxley, held two special events on Saturday 31 March. The day began by hosting an afternoon tea party for 21 local exRAF servicemen and women as well as members of the Lancaster Club. Our valued guests were treated to a fabulous spread of homemade sandwiches, scones and cakes, as well as a good old cuppa. For those more hardy guests there was something a little stronger on the menu. The afternoon went with a swing with a strong ‘Cockney’ flavour as our guests were entertained on the spoons by local duo Ian ‘Rosie’ Rose and Matthew, singing many good old favourites such as Knees Up Mother Brown, Kiss Me Goodnight Sergeant Major and Roll Uut The Barrel, with guests joining in heartily. During the evening the Lancaster Club stepped back to
the 1940s and held a successful themed night with many members arriving in a variety of outfits worn in WW2. We even had a Captain Mainwaring from Dad’s Army as well as Air Raid Chief Warden Hodges to ensure we all put our lights out. To add more nostalgia to the evening we were entertained by a fabulous local artist Rosa May, who sang period songs as well as hits from the 50s and 60s. The Lancaster Club was proud to hold these two events on a very important year for the RAF and also in support of the Royal Air Forces Association which provides comradeship, help and welfare to both serving and former members of our air force and their dependants. You don’t have to be a former or serving member of the RAF to apply for membership of the Lancaster Club. You can apply for Associate membership and enjoy an excellent venue where you will receive a warm welcome, good humour as well as live entertainment on Saturday evenings, and an opportunity to join in with our quiz, bingo, domino and crib nights.

sticking out of them at odd angles. I'm no expert, but considering it's been less than twelve months and they're worse than ever I can only assume they were filled with sand and good intentions. When it's clear that the material that they made the road of wasn't strong enough, why fill the holes with something that's even softer? If it's just a cost issue (and I think we all know that it is), then why not just fill them with grass cuttings? It would be about successful.

Once again, it is clear that it falls to me to come up with a solution and would you believe it? I have! Here's the plan - fill all the holes with Weetabix, wait for it to rain and, once the sun dries it out, we will be left with a surface tougher than concrete that can stand the test of lorry loads of carrots thundering over it a dozen times a day. Why use concrete when you can use something we all know is tougher than concrete?! No need to thank me - it's a service I provide!

Affected by work-related stress or anxiety? Don’t suffer in silence ... Yaxley RAF Serviceman to take on swim challenge for Autism Charity RAF serviceman Alan Peirce and a separate team from a NATO training school in Germany, are embarking on a huge, physically demanding, swimming challenge in May to raise vital funds for North-West Charity Autism Together. Alan will swim a total of 10 miles in Oberammergau, Germany, which is equivalent to running a marathon and a half. Training is currently ongoing with a strict fitness regime in place with the help of Roger James Smith at Target Your Fitness. Alan set himself the challenge after learning about Autism Together’sFuture 50 appeal which hopes to raise £2.5 million to build a pioneering autism assessment and diagnosis centre. The pioneering centre will use high-tech biometric technology to map the anxiety of patients with
severe autism who are not able to speak or indicate how they are feeling. The data will be collected on lightweight bracelets worn by patients, which look like Fitbits. Talking about his challenge, Alan said: “When I heard about the Future 50 project I felt compelled to do something. The training has proved to be challenging however I am looking forward to completing the big 10-mile swim”. Alan and the separate team are fundraising via just giving and donations can be made here:

It’s no secret that from time to time, most of us suffer from what we like to call ‘the Monday morning blues’ by Eileen Le Voi following the weekend.

ut for tens of thousands of people, the problem is much more serious; and impacts severely on their lives. During 2016/2017 (according to Government figures) a staggering 526,000 workers suffered from workrelated stress, depression or anxiety (new or long-standing). This equates to 12.5 million work days lost during that time. Stress in the workplace can manifest itself in many ways; lack of concentration, poor time keeping, becoming withdrawn from colleagues or just not being able to cope with the pressure of the job or working day. The HSE has some guidelines on spotting the signs of stress, and employers have a legal a legal duty to protect employees from stress at work by doing a risk assessment and acting on it. There are six main areas that can lead to work-related stress if they are not managed properly. These are: demands, control, support, relationships, role and change. For example, employees may say that they: Are not able to cope with the
demands of their jobs. Are unable to control the way they do their work. Don’t receive enough information and support. Are having trouble with relationships at work, or are being bullied. Don’t fully understand their role and responsibilities. Are not engaged when a business is undergoing change.
Stress affects people differently – what stresses one person may not affect another. Factors like skills and experience, age or disability may all affect whether an employee can cope. Hoping for drier weather Gemma’s Hearts to be Yaxley FC & Yaxley Riders’ charity partner What a busy few months we have had & thank you for your support & kind donations. We would like to say ‘thank you’ to Colin, Alun & Sue at The Duck & Drake who managed to fundraise £782.50 in aid of a defibrillator for the Duck & Drake. The defibrillator is situated inside the pub and will have a cabinet in the next few months to be a public defibrillator and will be housed outside. We are very pleased to announce that Yaxley FC & Yaxley Riders have asked us to be their charity partners. These last few months we have been doing BBQs at Yaxley FC for cup matches & The Cuckoo’s Home matches. We have received a 5 star rating from Environmental Health. We will also be fundraising for defibrillators at the Yaxley Riders’ Reliability Event on 22 April, 7.30am - 1pm, Yaxley FC Club, Leading Drove PE3 3NA. At the time of print, I would like to wish Daniel Snipe Keys all the best for the London Marathon on the 22 April; you can find his fundraising page on our Facebook page: Gemma’s Hearts and find out how he got on. We would like to say ‘well done’ to the quick thinking staff at The Farcet Club when a patient fell poorly and were advised by 999 to fetch the nearest defibrillator. The defibrillator at Lakeside Doctors at Yaxley was also deployed last week which was fetched by a member of public. We would like to wish both patients a speedy recovery. I would also like to say ‘thank you’ to The Farmers Yaxley for donating an amazing £200 towards our defibrillators.

As May begins we hope the frost and cold are finally over and our plants can start to grow and bloom in the garden. For houses in the flood plain, April probably saw some time submerged this year which is likely to have impacted on the number of earthworms and beneficial beetles in the garden. Aerating the soil with fork prongs can hep those surviving to recover. Sadly spring has been poor for meadow creation and indeed many seeds will have failed. Increasingly autumn sowings pay dividends for meadows and annual mixes. Of course the damp weather has been a bonus to slugs and snails which will be increasingly active unless we hit a prolonged dry spell. Whilst the late cold has destroyed much of this year’s frogspawn; pond freezing cryogenics do not work. Another blow to the natural predators of plant munching gastropods all of whom are in decline despite the growth in their prey. It is so easy to reach for slug pellets and similar to defend our flower borders but doing so is as much a blow to our gardening friends the hedgehog, the toad, the thrush and the beetles, to name but a few, who are also laid low and unproductive by these pernicious chemicals. It is far better to look to companion planting, predator encouragement, abrasive surfaces and copper tape to protect key plants encouraging nature to symbiotically balance in our gardens once more.

On Sunday 8 July the annual Kimbolton Country Fayre is being be held in the attractive 60-acre grounds of Kimbolton Castle. New this year: The Savage Free Style Mountain Bike Stunt Team – Haka display and Mobile Cave. Beagles and Heavy horses return. Also back this year is Millers Ark Mobile Farm. 1000 classic cars accompanied by their owners, over 80 stall holders, secondary ring events, big band music, dancing, bungee trampoline, Dreamrides and radio controlled cars, to mention but a few. We still have our favourites such Lord John Robartes Regiment of Foote and Horse, Galaxy Big Band, Lindy Hop and Morris Dancers. Also new this year Gavin James Burke – Classical and Musical Theatre Vocalist. As you would expect at such an event, the catering is important too. There will be both Beer and Tea Marquees available, serving hot and cold drinks, homemade cakes and sandwiches in separate covered seated areas. Also, a wide selection of other food stalls including a hog roast, burger bar, fish and chips and superior quality ice cream available throughout the day. Also new this year a display by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

We are planning essential maintenance on the A1(M) southbound carriageway between junction 17 and junction 16 to make sure that it continues to be safe for motorists to use. Lane 1 of the A1(M) will be closed between Saturdays to Thursdays. There will be narrower than usual running lane widths during these works. The Birth of a Quiz About nine months ago the idea of the Quiz was conceived. There’s lots to prepare. Make sure the venue is free at the time required. Apply for the licence to sell alcohol. Make a risk assessment to make sure everyone will be safe on delivery of the quiz. Ensure that the due date suits the Quizmaster’s holiday requirements! By the last trimester it is time to let everyone know that the happy event is expected and send out invitations to attend. Storks are no longer involved but many emails fly back and forth and eventually a guest list is compiled. Eventually, after many anxious months, the due date is reached.
After many hours of printing and checking and writing and rewriting, labour begins. There is much puffing and panting and pushing and a little shouting, but finally the Quiz sees the light of day! The parents of the Quiz are relieved and happy and there are celebrations and prizes for some. Nearly £2500 has been raised for charity. “Never again,” says the Quizmaster, but labour pains are soon forgotten, so look out for a little brother or sister in a year’s time!
But the birds have been singing and more flowers are appearing in my garden every day. Easter was early this year and at our services we learnt about new life and bright hope for tomorrow. The new life is bursting all around us with the birdsong and blossom and we wish you peace, love and hope in your lives. Our increasingly popular Coffee morning will start at 10 a.m. Come along and enjoy our homemade cakes, coffee, tea and companionship. Sunday Service and Junior Church start at 10.30 every week. Conington Church Just south of Norman’s Cross and to the East of the A1M lies the village of Conington. Its beautiful church dedicated to All Saints was ‘closed ‘ in 1976 and its congregation was united with that of St Giles, Holme. The building is now in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust who permit two services to be held each year. These are 1662 Traditional Sung Evensong and the next one is on Sunday 13 May at 3 pm. We haven’t picked the hymns for the service yet so if you have a favourite that you would like to be considered why not email or text your request to Reverend Gordon Limbrick. The 6 bells are rung to welcome the congregation and the service is accompanied by a small choir. Would you like to join? Even if you don’t have robes you are still welcome but it would be nice to know that you are coming. If you have never been in Conington Church or just miss the old ways of worship, you are invited to join us for the next service. We hope to see you there. Broadway Bowls’ green playing as well as ever by Robert Heath
After a very wet period at the end of March, beginning of April the ’Green’ is open and playing as well as ever. It was no surprise to any of us that our groundsman, Norman Hill, was named a Club Player of the Year. It is largely due to his hard work that we now see everyone back playing again after the long winter break. As always at the start of a new season, expectations are high, we are all looking forward to some good bowling sunshine and hope that one of our teams can triumph in the league, or cup and that are individual members go far in the county knock-out competitions. The first game of the season sees Captain Bruce Saint’s team take on our President Ray Bass’s team in a hotly contended friendly fixture – the result of which will be in next month’s Gazette. There have been one or two changes with the team captains this year, largely brought on by the captain of our Saturday Sharks and Midweek Falcons, falling over whilst on a cruise holiday and badly damaging his knee ligament. Get well soon Rob.

Holme WI
Good job we have double glazing! We were joined at our April meeting by Kirsty and her Senegal drums, hence our meeting being called ‘African Thunder’. Kirsty plays a variety of musical instruments with her favourite being the bassoon. However, she came along to our meeting with a large selection of drums from Senegal, and we sat in a circle playing along to her tune, or at least those members with a bit of rythmn did, the rest of us just tapped along and tried to look like we knew what we were doing. Then, it started to get more complicated, and this is when we really had to focus, as we were divided into three groups with each group playing a different ‘tune’ but altogether at the same time, three members then added accompaniment on the really large drums with bells at the back.
All I can say is, it’s a good job the village hall has robust double glazing, because I am sure we made enough noise to deafen the whole village. We did have a really good time though, everyone was ‘buzzing’ afterwards, although our hands felt a little bit sore. We have had a games and social evening in the Admiral Wells with prizes of chocolate eggs being handed out, albeit the same people seemed to win all the prizes! We also revealed our Centenary Banner to our members, as many of them hadn’t seen the completed banner. This banner was then paraded at the Huntingdon & Peterborough Federation Day as part of the Federation’s Centenary.

Yaxley WI On 5 April nine members attended the Annual Federation Day at St Ives. As well as the serious matters of finance etc we heard talks by speakers as diverse as the former Ladies England Cricket Captain Charlotte Edwards, the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire Julie Spence as well as talks on plastic in our seas and helping children read. All were very different but equally as interesting. After lunch many institutes paraded handmade banners celebrating 100 years of Huntingdon & Peterborough Federation as well as seven institutes also celebrating their centenary year. It was left to each institute to decide the form and type of banner resulting in the display of many different crafts and colours, all equally good. Later in April Members of Yaxley will be celebrating our centenary with a dinner at the
Fox in Folksworth but on 1st September we are holding a tea & cakes afternoon at Queens Pavillion, Yaxley, and hope to see many villagers as well as former W I members. There will be a small charge of £2.50. Our meeting on 10th May will be held as usual at The Lancaster Club, Main St, Yaxley when our speaker will be Andrew Sankey speaking and illustrating "Unusual Garden Features" We open our doors at 6.45 and visitors very welcome.

Childcare Vouchers The Government have announced a six-month extension to the deadline for parents to sign up to receive childcare vouchers. It had previously been announced that, from 6 April 2018, childcare vouchers would be closed to new entrants and be replaced by the new Tax Free Childcare (TFC) scheme. This would mean that: • If parents were not already signed up for vouchers at that time, they would not be able to claim them in the future. • Employees already receiving childcare vouchers at that time could continue to receive them as long as their employer ran the scheme or until they changed employer. However, in a House of Commons debate on 13 March 2018 the Government announced that this deadline would be extended for a further six months. As a result, parents now have until October 2018 to sign up for childcare vouchers (if they have not done so already). Parents can either claim childcare vouchers or TFC – not both. It is therefore important for both employers and employees to consider whether childcare vouchers or TFC are appropriate for them. If childcare vouchers are preferred, and the employee is not yet part of a scheme, they will need to sign up for them before October 2018.

Inspired to change At our Mini Heroes classes children will learn the basics of karate and core skills such as coordination, listening, strength, balance, discipline and many more. These classes are a great way to introduce your child to karate at a young age and are something you can do together and have fun in the process. Not only will your child be learning invaluable skills, you will too! Activities like this are a fun way for both boys and girls to achieve fitness and focus. Some parents may think they also promote violence, but according to experts, that's a myth. Martial arts actually help teach self-discipline and socialization skills. In fact, many parents whose children have attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) report great success with these programs because
self-control and concentration are exactly the skills underdeveloped in ADHD kids. A typical class begins and ends with a bow to the instructor. After a warm-up, students practice the art's particular skills, which may include kicks, punches and blocks. Each requires concentration and attention. Progress is often marked by the belt system, which takes the beginner from a white belt through a variety of colours until black. But, say experts, it's the respect kids learn, whether from bowing or standing still and waiting for the next command, that can be the most important benefit. It often carries over into school, helping to improve behaviour and even grades, according to recent research.

Holmewood Part III:
School Days

Holme C of E School, situated opposite the church, was originally three classrooms attached to the schoolhouse, which was occupied by the headmaster.
T
he big classroom was usually split into two by a partition; one space for the infants and the other for junior 1, another room for junior 2 and a small one for seniors. There was not a canteen so lunchtime meant forming lines of two – making sure you held hands – and walking down to the Reading Room, half-way down Church Street, come rain or shine. The infant teacher was Mrs Fear, who lived in the Station House, a very matronly figure and very strict, it was usually a slipper on the back of the legs if you had committed some naughty prank. But I can still remember the stories she read to us about rabbits and other little animals. Moving up to the juniors was a big step and another activity we used to do to help us with maths was to make cars out of card. We had to measure the shapes and cut them out, folding with care and lots of glue you ended up with a car or lorry, mine were always a bit wonky, and to this day I cannot cut in a straight line! During this time an extension was being built onto the original building, which housed a staff room, inside toilets (a luxury), a school canteen (no more walking in the rain) and two more classrooms for the seniors and Junior 2 to move into. No cooking was done in the canteen, but the food was delivered by car and kept heated in the ovens, its arrival being announced by beeping of the horn, which meant two ‘big’ boys, would go and help the dinner ladies – of which my mum was one - to unload the car, the same process would exist for the milk run. Some school meals were nice, but to this day I can’t abide lumpy custard, lumpy potatoes or fish in parsley sauce.
Moving into the seniors was another big step, bringing with it cooking for the girls and woodwork for the boys. For this activity the old school bus would pick us up on the appropriate day and take us to Stibbington, on the A1 about 8 miles away, returning with our proud offerings to our parents later that day. We were introduced to swimming also by catching the same rickety bus and being taken to the Peterborough Lido, come rain or shine. It was decided to build a pool at the School of which I had the pleasure of opening by jumping in it when it was finished, unheated! In winter, when there was snow and ice, the bigger boys would make a big slippery slide along one side of the playground which
they controlled who was allowed to go on it, they usually kept the girls off it, but we would have a sneaky go when they were not there. In autumn playing conkers was another activity (not allowed now!) in the playground, we lived near some big horse chestnut trees so we got a good supply. In the summer there was always sports day, when mums and dads would come and watch the egg and spoon, sack races and the obstacle course to name a few, and of course we loved to watch our mum’s in their race at the end of the day. At this time, The Sawtry College was being built and when I left Holme School, it was converted to a primary school. When reaching the age of 11 the children would go to Sawtry.

Farcet C. of E. Primary School
We have been very busy this month at Farcet with preparations for Easter. Our pupils in Newton Class were very excited to watch chicks hatch from their eggs and the whole school enjoyed watching them grow and change. The children were inspired to produce some wonderful writing and looked after the chicks very well during their stay. The school visited St. Mary’s church for collective worship in the last week of term. It was a very special service with readings, hymns

and prayers to allow us all to reflect on the lead up to Easter Sunday. The children sang beautifully and everyone received a palm cross. We would like to thank Barrie Swingler and Captain Georgina Symons for their contribution to the service. We had lots of Easter fun with an egg hunt organised by Kingsgate Church. Lots of families stayed after school to join in the fun and each child was lucky enough to receive their own chocolate egg. Our thanks to all of the volunteers from Kingsgate for their hard work.
Little Acorns
The pre-school have been looking after their flowers, fruits and vegetables which they planted earlier in the spring term. The children are enjoying watering the shoots and also seeing how much they have grown each week. The Rose room children have really enjoyed exploring messy play with the dinosaurs. The children have been making dinosaur foot prints with the paint, and then
matching the foot prints to the correct dinosaur. They have also enjoyed role playing dinosaurs and making lots of loud roaring noises! We are currently taking bookings for September 2018 and also into 2019! T
hey certainly knew a thing or three, those folk of yesteryear. They had to live ‘cheek by jowl’ with nature, and with the English countryside, so for them, bad weather didn’t mean simply turning the thermostat up a notch, or popping on the electric blanket. “Button to chin, till May be in” has certainly been good advice this year, with late snows throughout March, and the rains keeping the land sodden until well in to April. May, however, was the month that my grandfather never left the farm, when nature really wakes up, when everything is growing, reproducing, and when our green and pleasant land puts on her finery and really shows off; I love May. The second half of the rhyme
“Button to chin, till May be in, Cast not a clout till May be out” Old English saying however, contains a warning, as early mornings and late evenings in May can still be chilly and brisk, so “cast not a clout [a shred of material] until May be out”. On the farm, our lambs born in the ‘spring’ (snow, sub-zero nights, persistent rain) will welcome the warmer weather, and it’s always lovely to see them running around in gangs like naughty children in the fields. Our spring crops which we’d typically plant in March were this year planted over a month late in the second half of April and should be emerging and racing away with the warmer soil temperatures and longer daylength speeding their growth. In the garden, leaves of rocket, watercress, and chicory will be in season and the first cuts of
asparagus will really announce the coming of the season, as will the new potatoes; mmn! Lamb is coming in to season, but I feel it’s always best to be buying your new season lamb in July when the earliest grass-fed lamb will be coming through. Lamb much earlier than this is fed on grass and supplementary food, known as creep feed which (while still tasty and good) doesn’t, I feel, have the full potential of delicious, grass-fed lamb. Those who dabble in gardengrown beverages and home ‘brews’ will be getting excited with the arrival of the elderflowers. May is a wonderful month; I hope you really get to enjoy it. And thank you for supporting British farmers by buying fresh, homegrown produce.

id you know Forrest Gump was based on a book? Yup. Written in 1986 by Winston Groom What about Full Metal Jacket? Oh yes. Written by Gustav Hasford in 1979 and titled The Short-Timers. How about classic The Godfather? Absolutely. Written by Mario Puzo in 1969, bearing the same name as the film. In fact, many of the most popular films of the last 100 years have been based on an original book. Now, most people have already noticed the differences in the Harry Potter films compared to the books (Neville Longbottom killing Nagini instead of Ron Weasley anyone?), but does reading the book before the film or after make the most difference? Should you read the book for a film? My answer is undoubtedly yes! Personally, I like to read the book first and then watch the film, although this tends to really annoy me more when I pick out the many different aspects of the film. You see, filmmakers must condense the source material to fit into 2 hours or so, which can be extremely difficult. But do they really need to change the entire way the book played out? Absolutely not! Case in point, Ready Player One! Now I could go on for days about the differences between Ernest Cline’s fantastic book and the excellent film of the same name, but you can listen to my Podcast episode on it, which you can find on the links below. My questions are these: Should the books be given the same love and affection a film is given? Should the books be promoted just as much as the film (RPO was, admittedly, used highly in the marketing for the film) and should filmmakers be more attentive to the plot in the books as opposed to just changing it how they see fit (I am looking at you Mr Spielberg!)
