There are a busy few autumn weeks ahead with events including firework displays and Christmas with Nene Valley. You can also discover more about the less known impact on the lives of refugees by visiting the Home and Humanity exhibitions. In 2017 over 68 million men, women and children worldwide were driven from their homes due to war, violence and persecution. More information is on page 13. As always, community support via your local publication is invaluable, and in this edition you can read about 5 month old Daniel McAvoy, who has been diagnosed with Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome which affects his immune system. His family have now been told that he will need a stem cell transplant if he is to be cured and has put out an appeal for help. Sadly as yet, no match for Daniel has been found. Find out what you can do on page 5. You could save a life - or Daniel's life. Also, Yaxley Branch Royal British legion are looking for volunteers to help with this year’s Local Poppy Appeal and The Great Fen Local History Group volunteers are collecting historical documents and would welcome any historical factual book or documents that may help preserve our heritage for future generations. Going back even further into history, we look at the fascinating link between one of England’s early hero kings and Peterborough on page 19. Stay warm, enjoy this edition and see you next month.

Festival of Remembrance

5 month old Daniel McAvoy, whose parents live at Benwick, has been diagnosed with Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome which affects his immune system.

In November, Peterborough Male Voice Choir, Peterborough Voices and Peterborough Youth Choir will commemorate the region’s fallen soldiers and the service and sacrifice of the armed forces with Festival of Remembrance, a moving evening of beautiful melodies and poignant words for Remembrance Sunday, taking place at The Cresset in support of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The third event of its kind this promises to be a memorable evening, particularly so in this 75th

This disease which largely affects boys, was diagnosed after Daniel had nosebleeds and blood in his nappy. Daniel's parents have put out an appeal with the assistance of Anthony Nolan for a bone marrow transplant. Within just 3 days 2,457 people had signed up to the register. Daniel always has a smile on his face despite lots of hospital appointments. Sadly as yet, no match for Daniel has been found. You simply fill in a form from one of the links and send a swab from your mouth and boom, you're registered. You could save a life - or Daniel's life. It is the ambition to build a substantial reference base of local fenland drainage with its fascinating history. What You Can Do With A Small Hot Iron Our September meeting took on a creative theme with Anthea Moore, an encaustic wax ‘painter’. I use the term painter loosely because she creates pictures of landscapes, seascapes, flowers and leaves amongst just a few of her themes using encaustic wax and a small hot iron. The wax is melted on to the plate of the iron, several colours can be applied at the same time, and then the hot iron is applied to special card leaving an imprint. Manipulating the iron on the card and adding other colours she creates pictures, for example using blue and white she creates a skyline and then by adding greens and browns creates the land, using the tip of the iron or the side edges she can create trees and bushes. She made it look very easy, by adding a small dot of brown wax suddenly there was a bird flying in the sky. The card is then polished as the wax has already dried and voila you have a picture. Some of our members tried it out creating scenes or flowers with great success. Anthea is an artist but insisted even those without a ‘creative bone in their body’ can do encaustic wax

pictures, it’s really easy, apparently. We had a great evening with Anthea, watching something that I had never seen demonstrated before. She also had a great display of cards for sale, that can be used for birthdays or other celebrations, and all her profits are very kindly donated to The Friends of Hinchingbrooke Hospital. Our Knit and Knatter group has been really, really busy, 6 blankets were delivered to Olive Mead Care Home in Yaxley recently. Over 50 Myeloma Buddies have also been knitted. These are small orange toys that will be donated to the Myeloma Charity to raise funds to help the charity promote research into Myeloma and provide training to health workers to spot early signs of the cancer. It is one of the rarest forms of cancer and often the signs are missed or not noticed early enough. September is also Blood Cancer Awareness month, so perfect timing for these little orange buddies. A huge round of applause to the ladies of the Knit and Knatter group for making these toys, which apparently were hard to knit on three needles and equally hard to stuff! Anyone interested in joining, please do come along and see what we are all about and what we get up to. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm. Please contact holmewi2015@gmail.com for further details. All ladies will receive a warm and friendly welcome.

YAXLEY WI Our regular members were joined tonight by one new member and a visitor from Essex. Whilst enjoying tea and cakes Phyllis Black auctioned off lots of home grown/made produce plus gifts which will help our bank balance. Phyllis is very humorous which makes parting with your money easy! Our competition for some home grown produce was judged by our newest member Janette Mathieson and a cup was awarded to Sue Bingham. We then played a game of "Play Your Cards Right" with one half of the room against the other and this brought back lots of memories of Bruce Forsyth and his various catch phrases. This was a followed by 2 games of bingo for small prizes. Altogether a very nice social evening

‘When you’ve got friends and neighbours, all the world is a happier place’! If you are a ‘golden oldie’ you may recognize these words from the Billy Cotton Band Show in the 1950s. Did you know you can listen to it on YouTube and bring back memories of peaceful Sundays? The song continues ‘just take your troubles and share them, that’s what friends are for’. It is so important to reach out to each other in times of need. This was highlighted for me again last month when my son who lives a two hour drive away from Yaxley suddenly found himself in hospital having his appendix removed. We were able to book a hotel near the hospital, visit him and spend time caring for him when he returned to his home. It was very difficult for me to have to leave him after this, but many of his friends and neighbours assured me that they would be there for him. And they have been. Do we find time in our busy lives to be there for others ? Do we put a smile on sad faces, share their troubles or just spend a little time looking at their family photos or listening to their stories ? Just giving them company and a little of our time could make such a difference. ‘With friends and

neighbours your the richest man in Town’ is the last line of the song. (That works for women too!) From November the Winter Night Shelters will be open in our local churches once again. Every week until the Spring people will be given beds for the night, evening meals and a good breakfast to start the day and companionship, all provided by volunteers. Last year there were many successful outcomes proving that with the right kind of help, support and encouragement many can find work and a roof over their head. According to an internet health site teas can be uplifting and refreshing so maybe you should come and enjoy a cup of tea with us on the 12th October. We call it our coffee morning I know, but we also serve tea and homemade cakes and scones. I am sure that many of you may have found your spirits lifted when you have joined us, having a chat in our cosy Chapel. Why don’t you bring a friend or neighbour along with you.

The community of St Peter’s Church worked incredibly hard to ensure everything ran smoothly and I would like to thank them. Along with friends and family and so many people from St Peter’s Church community were also many different representatives from Yaxley. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for being there and part of such a special evening. It is going to take me a good while to get to know people, names and places, but do say hello if you see me out and about and

I will eventually get there! Thank you for coming to support me. Simon and I are really excited to be in Yaxley and part of the St Peter’s community. People have been so helpful as we try to find our way around the village and this side of the country. I was ordained 6 years ago and have been in Shropshire for these 6 years and before this, I was a nurse working mainly in cancer care for 13 years. Thank you for your welcome to the village and I am looking forward to getting to know people here.

St Peter's Church I am writing this just a few days after I was licensed as Priest-in-Charge (Vicar) of St Peter’s Church, Yaxley by The Bishop of Ely. It was an incredibly special service and friends and family came from all over the country. There was also an unexpected surprise, as people from The Wenlock Team of Parishes which were my previous parishes in Shropshire came to support me for this service.

We are always proud to report on County success and often have recorded wins in the County competitions. These winners go on to represent our county in the National finals held at Skegness, playing against other county winners. We have come close before, with Yaxley Broadway Bowls club members being Nation runners-up, but never before have we had National champions. This year, Les Sharp and Gill King, playing in the senior mixed pairs, achieved that honour. Les, a bowler now for 44 years, joined Yaxley in 1987; he thought that he had achieved all his ambitions in bowls with 100 appearances playing for the County in Newton and Adams cup matches. He was looking to wind down his playing career, in favour of coaching and umpiring, (for which he is now fully qualified to National level). We all hope this win has reinvigorated his thirst for bowls at the top level and that he continues to play for the club for many years to come. Gill a keen badminton player in her younger days, first moved on to Carpet bowls, (which she continues to play in the winter months), before becoming a Yaxley bowls club member 12 years ago. She has also won many county honours, playing for Northampton Ladies along with previous county honours for our club. Gill and Les had close games in the early rounds beating North Essex 1815, and Northumberland 17-15. But a convincing win in the semi-finals against North Cambridgeshire 27-6, saw them in to the final. In a well-fought final against Durham they won by 18 points to 14. Congratulations also go to a former Yaxley Bowls club member, Graham Agger who with his team (Roger Stevens and Martin Welsford) won the National 3-bowl rinks title. In the leagues this year we have had mixed fortunes.

sport

goodsport Weekend League: Yaxley Sharks have finished as runners-up in the Premier Division to Blackstones from Stamford, who went through the season unbeaten by any club. Yaxley Seals also playing in the Premier Division came 6th in the division.

Midweek League Yaxley Falcons finished 9th in the Premier Division and look like being demoted to Div.1 next year Yaxley Kites finished runners-up to a very strong Blackstones team, but will be promoted back to the Premier Division – we were the only team to win against Blackstones this year! Yaxley Eagles finished 5th in Division 4

Club 60 League With one game still to play Yaxley Spitfires still have a chance of finishing as runners-up in the Premier Division – Result next month. Yaxley Hurricanes look like finishing 3rd, in Division 2, if they can get a win in their final game against the Conservative club team, (lets hope they are too busy worrying about Brexit to concentrate!). Our Club finals day were held on Sunday 8 September – results and pictures next month. And our final game of the season, ‘Presidents Bowl’ was played on Sunday 15 September – result next month. Club AGM will be Friday 8 October 7pm in the bowls pavilion. Next season starts in April – new members are always welcomed – come along and give it a go and you may be coached by a National Champion!

nature watch

Help

naturewatch they’re coming to get me!

This month is when we see the invasion of the spiders into our homes, or at least that is how most humans view it. The reality is that the majority of spiders have been in our homes tucked out of sight, beneath floorboards, or in quiet corners, quietly going about their useful business of culling household flies and other unsavoury domestic visitors. But this time of year is spider mating season, so the males, in particular, are required to put on a show to entice a female to twin with them. The marauding male you see running across the floor is seeking out a female who has still to moult to maturity. When he finds a web he can tell instantly whether the female is suitable from chemical cues (pheromones) she has laid

down in her silk, which he detects with his feet and palps. This ritual is very important for the male spiders as getting this wrong could mean that the female spider is likely to just eat them on arrival making a nourishing meal to enhance egg-laying. This elaborate courtship routine often involves the presentation of gifts such as a wrapped fly, though some male spiders are known to cheat and just silk wrap a piece of grit. So, next time you see a spider in October don’t run and scream for help but watch the intricate courtship ritual and enjoy one of nature’s many wonders.

William de Yaxley CE Academy introduces… Their Head Boy and Girl: “It feels wonderful to be back at school and to see all our friends however, it is also a bit nerve wracking since we have to get used to a new teacher, new rules, a new year group, and we both have to get used to being Head Boy and Head Girl and what that means.” William de Yaxley Academy has Prefects because they have an important role to perform for the school. Prefects make sure that children around the school are following our school rules. They are on hand to help staff in school, answer questions that children want answers to and are on hand to be a friend to anyone who needs them. “We are role models to the other children in the school and at times we are called upon to represent the school at public functions. We have a lot of responsibility and we take the job very seriously.” “It feels amazing to have been chosen for these prestigious roles and we are both over the moon to be representing our school.”

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School The children have been enjoying the change in season; they have been exploring the leaves in the garden, and also enjoyed collecting the fruit from the tree’s. We have made autumn pictures using hand and foot prints and also from the leaves collected in the garden. We would like to welcome the new children and families we have had join us over the past month and joining us in the coming months. We have lots of new starters and are looking forward to the journey you will have with us here at Little Acorns. We have limited spaces left to start with us this school year; we are now booking places for September 2020.

Jake and Cianah feel strongly that in their roles as Head Boy and Head Girl, they very much want to benefit their school by helping everyone who needs it. They both want to make reading more exciting for all year groups and they both feel that they bring the qualities of kindness and helpfulness to their positions. “We want to be able to positively affect our school in our final year here before we go on to secondary school. When we leave we want our school to be even better than it is now. We are thinking hard about how we can excite children to read more and enjoy it and we want to ensure that everyone’s opinion is heard and considered.” What a lovely legacy to leave.

(Jake Cardinal – Head Boy, Cianah Wassell – Head Girl)

Happy 40th Birthday to Folksworth Preschool Many things have changed in our small rural village over the last 40 years. Folksworth School moved to its new school building, Townsend Way was built, Folksworth play park was created. During all this time the one constant in our village has been the provision for our youngest residents. It’s evolved over time to become a wonderful resource for our community. As we move into the new academic year we have lost of exciting activities planned for our

children. You will be seeing us out and about exploring our community and the countryside around us. So watch out for us in our red puddle suits and wellies. Our staff are continuously updating their training to support our children’s learning and development with some wonderful activities planned for this term. We are looking forward to working with our next generation and what the future hold.

and will spend time thinking about how we can accomplish this, both for ourselves and others. Children all around school have been very busy ‘looking for a book’. This initiative, which seems to be the latest craze in many communities, has been adopted by Fourfields to promote and celebrate the joy of reading. Books have been carefully hidden around the school for our children to find and there has already been great excitement when books have been found! Once these books have been read and shared, they can be re-hidden for someone else to enjoy. Happy Reading!

After a wonderful summer break, the Fourfields children are settling in well and we are excited to have welcomed 90 children into our Foundation Stage classes this year. We now have Hedgehogs, Squirrels and Otters who make up the youngest members of our school community and feel very lucky that they are beginning their school journey with us. Each year, our school takes inspiration from a single word. In previous years, our focus has ‘COMMUNITY’, ‘BELIEVE’ and ‘SHINE’. This year, our word is ‘DREAM’. We aspire to create children who are both dreamers and dream builders

Farcet C. of E. Primary School We are delighted to announce that the outcome of our SIAMS Inspection on 20 June, was a grading of ‘Excellent’. This is the highest outcome possible under the new inspection framework and a fantastic achievement for our whole school community. The final report fully highlights many of the great things that happen to enable both pupils and adults to flourish. During the inspection, all of the children were wonderful representatives of our

school and spoke so knowledgeably and proudly about what happens each and every day. It was felt that our strongly held and distinctly Christian vision permeates all aspects of school life; it positively impacts on all, bringing genuine transformation. We are extremely proud to have had our achievements recognised in this way and look forward to us continuing and building upon, our fantastic work as a church school.

Yaxley Infants Woodworking in Early Years

Our school year has got off to a tremendous start with our new children, parents and staff all settling in so well! We know how difficult transitions can be – from pre-school to school, from one school to another, from one class to another or even just from holidays back into school mode – they can all be challenging for everyone involved, not just the children. At the start of this term, we launched the revised Vision, Values and Ethos for our school community. This was the amalgamation of views canvassed from our children, parents, church members, governors and staff. At it’s heart,

is a quote from Ecclesiastes ‘A cord of three strands is not easily broken’. Our three strands represent the communities of our local area, our school and our church. Through the bonds of Family, Faith and Friendship, our primary aim is to inspire a love of learning. We also identified six Christian values which we feel are central to life within our school. These are Compassion, Friendship, Community, Hope, Courage and Thankfulness. We look forward to putting these into action on a daily basis within the school, and sharing some of the outcomes with you in the months ahead.

The exhibitions ‘Journeys Drawn’ and ‘Drawing Time’ humanise the stories behind the statistics. They allow viewers to step into the shoes of a refugee for just a moment and think about how it feels to flee their war-torn homes and seek sanctuary in a forgein country. '

Home and Humanity

New exhibitions and events following the lives of refugees Vivacity announce ‘Home and Humanity,’ a new Autumn season of art exhibitions and events in the city. While exhibitions at Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery have always been designed to relate to contemporary affairs, this exhibition in particular touches on one of the most prevalent topics in today’s society - the refugee crisis. In 2017 over 68 million men, women and children worldwide were driven from their homes due to war, violence and persecution . ‘Home and Humanity’ follows these people and their families, many of whom have been divided during their journey across different countries in search of asylum. The exhibitions will go on display in Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery and Queensgate Shopping Centre. The three exhibitions are each slightly different in content but are united by the common theme of finding sanctuary:

‘Journeys Drawn: Illustrations from Refugee Crisis’ (11 Oct – 8 Dec) is a touring exhibition by House of Illustration highlighting different styles of illustration by different artists. This has been created by a mixture of refugee artists and artists who have worked in refugee camps. ‘Drawing Time’ (11 Oct - 8 Dec) is a visual story of one family’s journey from war-torn Darfur in Western Sudan, presented on hand-painted cloth. Having always drawn and sketched together for fun and for pleasure, for the Dirar family, art became a way to deal with memories of war and an uncertain future. Before long, the Dirars’ tent had become a visual gallery of coping with a ‘life in limbo’ and now exists as a document of their journey. ‘Home’ (27-29 Aug, 5-6 Oct) is a social engagement project, led by Syrian artist Issam Kourbaj, which is based around bringing

together people to create an answer to a common need - shelter. As part of the project, members of different communities from around Peterborough will build a shelter using recycled resources - in a similar way and to the same scale as those seen in refugee camps - but with a twist. Each wall of the structure, both inside and out, will be ornately decorated by participants, who will put their own mark on the shelter. The building will be embellished with colours, patterns and emblems that remind them of home. This humble abode will act as a symbol of hope. Sheena Carman, Vivacity’s Community Engagement and Arts Development Manager says “The refugee crisis is something that we hear about a lot in the media, but we often feel disconnected from it as it isn’t happening on our doorsteps. The project ‘Home’ is inspired by art projects taking place in refugee camps where UNHCR tents have been transformed into stunning works of art, showing that, out of some of the darkest times and experiences that humans often go through, it is still possible for something beautiful to emerge.” The ‘Home’ shelter will be on display at Queensgate shopping centre on the weekend of 5 - 6 October. The exhibitions ‘Journeys Drawn: Illustrations from the Refugee Crisis’ and ‘Drawing Time’ will be shown in Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery from 11 October - 8 December.

history

history

What is the link between one of England’s early hero kings and Peterborough? To answer this question, we have to go back to the late eighth century – in the 790s.

King Alfred The Great Bill Watt. Peterborough By the mid ninth century what we now call England was divided up into 4 great, Anglo Saxon kingdoms; Mercia, Northumbria, East Anglia and Wessex. By 878, only Wessex remained; the other three had been over-run by Norse invaders. Alfred’s father, Aethewulf, was King of the West Saxons and Alfred was the youngest of five sons and being the youngest it was never expected that he would be King. However, fate decreed otherwise, had it not done so, the England that we know now would be a totally different place. Alfred grew up illiterate; however, whilst still very young he showed signs of the man he would become. His mother had a beautifully illuminated book of Anglo-Saxon poems and she decided to set her five sons a test. Whoever of the sons was the first to learn the book of poems and be able to recite them by heart, would receive the book as a gift. Alfred set himself the task of being that person; and succeeded. He achieved this by having someone read out the poems to him until he had absorbed them to the point he could recite them by heart. In his teens he had finally learned to be literate in Anglo Saxon and then became literate in Latin in his mature years. By then he had become aware that being able to speak, read and write, in Latin, gave power to whoever could do so. Latin was the language of power. In his twentieth year Alfred had married a Mercian noblewoman called Ealswith and, at the same time, faced his first great test against Danish invaders. Although, we now call these people Vikings, that was a collective name given to them by the Victorians. These invader armies were a diverse grouping of peoples. Some were from Norway, others from Sweden and different countries from the Baltic sea area. The ones here in East Anglia were from Denmark; that is why East Anglia became known as the Danelaw.. In the winter of 870, after their successes against the armies of Northumbria and East Anglia, the Danish Armies began their attack on Wessex. They were

Born Wantage, Berkshire 849. Died 899 determined to exercise control over the whole of England. Nine battles were fought and on the 8th January 871, after inflicting a heavy defeat on the West Saxons; the Danes marched on Wessex.. They marched up the Great Ridgway from their new base at Reading. This is a natural route which cuts across England into the heart of Wessex which has existed since prehistoric times. From time out of mind, this and other routes have been used by ancient peoples, to cross the country. When they could, they always followed the “Lie of the Land”; even today you can still find traces of them in old Drove Roads. In March of 871, Alfred and his brother, who was King suffered a serious defeat at the hands of the Danes. A month later Alfred’s brother died, leaving Alfred to rule as King of the Saxon Kingdom. In May, Alfred and his army suffered another defeat, forcing Alfred to negotiate a peace treaty, which disintegrated almost as soon as it was signed. By the following year, in 872, further setbacks forced Alfred and his remaining men, to withdraw into the Somerset Marshes at Athelney. It was at this point, during his re-grouping and re-building of his forces, that the very well-known story of King Alfred and the burning of the Cakes comes from. Crucially it was from this point onwards the tide began to turn against the Danes; ultimately leading to Alfred’s crucial victory over the Danish Army at Edington in 878. Although Alfred had achieved his military victory he was aware that a lasting peace could not be achieved by military means alone. He knew that a political settlement had to be achieved. Here Alfred the statesman revealed himself. To this end, as part of the surrender terms, the Danish leader, King Guthrum, agreed to become a baptised Christian; with Alfred acting as his sponsor. Subsequently an agreement was negotiated by Alfred, known as the “Danelaw”. This allowed the Danes to establish an agreed enclave of land for themselves. This gave the Danes a physical and

territorial stake in the country. This area stretched from East Anglia as far north as County Durham and across to the west coast, in what is now called Cumbria. The following year Alfred set about building a civil structure; a structure we would recognise today. This encompassed an effective territorial army, with regular training, fortified towns known as burhs and a fledging navy. He also initiated a judicial system in which judges had to prove they were literate, having a sharp mind and an astute knowledge of the law. He also began the steps that would unify what had been disparate kingdoms into one unified kingdom. And so, began the growth of the country that today, we know as England. He also commissioned the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle; from which we have been able to learn so much about this period. Residing in Peterborough Museum is an Official copy of significant Royal Relic called the Alfred Jewel. Around the side of it there is an inscription which reads “Alfred ordered me to be made”. It is my guess that his commissioning of religious texts, from Latin into Anglo- Saxon was the driver of this object and copies of it , called aestels.(pointers). These Aestels would have accompanied the translated Religious texts. The dragon like head at the base of the jewel holds a mouth, into which the actual pointer – probably made from ivory; would have been held. This is yet another stunning example of the skill and artistic capabilities of so called, “Dark Ages” craftsmen. Alfred died on the 26th October 899. Twenty years after he began to build England He was and is, the only English King to be called “Great”. And justifiably so. A photo of this beautiful object can be found online, if you key in King Alfred’s Jewel. Also, one of the few copies made can be found in the Peterborough Museum in Priestgate; along with many other pieces relating to Peterborough’s long history.

Part 2

Raising awareness of unthinkable dangers Last month, we told you the tragic story of Simba who died after choking on a ball. He was a playful softy who was loved by all and his owner never thought it was physically possible for him to swallow something the size of a tennis ball. If she’d realised, he never would been allowed one. Balls aren’t the only toy that can cause a problem - smaller toys, ribbons or parts of toys (such as the soft stuffing) can be swallowed whole and cause a dangerous gut obstruction and broken toys can cause mouth or tooth injuries.

Pet Toys

pawsforthought Call 01487 800199

We, and Simba’s owners, want to raise awareness of toy safety and in this edition we want to tell you about how to choose the best toy for your pet and how to minimize the risk of injury. This article is not intended to discourage you from playing with your pet, in fact playing together is a great way to have fun together, exercise and create a close bond. Not all accidents can be prevented, but you can minimize the risk.

 Avoid wooden sticks – wood splinters and this can cause damage to the mouth and gums. Sharp ends can puncture the skin, throat or even the eyes! This is even more of a risk if a stick is used to play fetch.  Choose the right size toy – even a tennis ball could be a choking hazard to the larger breeds. Pay attention to size guides on the packaging and if in doubt choose the larger toy. Be careful if you have dogs of different sizes in your household – for example the ball for your Jack Russell is not safe for your Labrador.  Only use balls with holes – if you do choose a ball, ensure it’s one with holes in it. This means if the worst happens, there is a better chance they can breathe.  Consider alternatives – e.g. rings, rubber sticks, Frisbees or balls on ropes (making sure it stays attached).  Supervise & check regularly – No toy is indestructible! Make sure you keep an eye on toys and check for damage, bin them if they are. Simba is pictured here before his tragic accident

 Stronger jaws need stronger toys  Check up on cat toys too - many cat toys are on the end of a ribbon or string, if these break they can cause a choking or blockage hazard too.  Repetitive actions – try not to overdo it. The repetitive action of running, jumping and turning quickly chasing a toy can take its toll on your pet’s joints which could lead to problems as they get older. Try to have a variety of activities you do with your pet – you don’t have to play fetch on every walk!  Know when to stop – some pets can be become so excited by play (especially dogs) that they will carry on no matter how tired or hot they get, some will even continue until they collapse! Be sensible when and how long you play for – heat stroke and exhaustion are serious conditions that can prove fatal.

Let it be your HAPPY HOUR!

‘I thought I’d never be able to do it as I genuinely had two left feet and no rhythm but quickly realised that Jazzercise was for everyone.

Active as a child, sport was always big part of my life, but when I graduated from university I’d given up sports, so quickly found myself looking for something else to keep me active I wasn’t really a gym person as I found it to be boring and honestly a little creepy. It was then that I tried local Jazzercise classes in Annapolis, Maryland with a friend and soon found myself quickly addicted! I thought I’d never be able to do it as I genuinely had two left feet and no rhythm but quickly realised that Jazzercise was for anyone. It was the only exercise programme where I switched off for an hour entirely as I tried to move and shake my hips to the top playlists.

so had to pause for a while. I desperately missed the programme and community, but when I moved to the UK and eventually Cambridgeshire, I was ecstatic as this was the birthplace of Jazzercise in the UK. Initially teaching for other owners locally, I was offered the opportunity to take on Cambourne classes in December 2015 and Peterborough classes in 2017 and realised this was my calling. I’ve since hung up my international sales and marketing hat

Not only did I lose myself in the hour and have fun, my body shape changed like never before as the muscle toning elements brought features out I didn’t even know existed! The ever-changing routines and class formats kept me motivated and challenged. After a few years, I was asked by my instructor if I’d be interested in teaching. Initially working as a teacher, I taught after school, but later I worked in international sales and marketing

and now am 100% working in Jazzercise! Focusing on Hampton and Yaxley, we’ve grown to 9 weekly classes. We have a team of instructors and a range of class times, letting people join in the Happy Hour when it suits them! With no need to book, we’d love you to come and join us! Our ages range from teens to octogenarians as our low impact and high impact options allow everyone to work at their own level!

Skin Deep Basal Cell Carcinoma

It began with an insect bite on my right cheek. At least I thought it was a bite though I didn’t remember being bitten. I dabbed it with tea tree oil and waited for it to heal up.

It sort of did, but then grew a little and flaked a little. It was tiny, maybe 2-3mm across but something about it bothered me. I told myself that if it hadn’t gone in a month, I’d see the GP. It didn’t change much over that time, but neither did it go away so, listening to my gut feelings, I went to see my GP feeling a little foolish (I wasn’t sick after all) and fully expected to be dismissed as one of the worried well, but after inspecting it the GP looked thoughtful. “I think it might be a BCC. A basal cell carcinoma.” I was shocked. Carcinoma was cancer, right? I was only 50. Was I going to die? A basal cell carcinoma is indeed a type of skin cancer. There are two main types of skin cancer: melanoma and non-melanoma. BCC is a non-melanoma type, and accounts for more than 80% of skin cancers in the UK. As with most skin cancers, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun or from sunbeds is the cause, which is why they often appear most often on the face or head of fair skinned people like me. I am not a sunbather, nor have I ever used sunbeds. I do like to be outdoors, cycling and kayaking but I always wear sun protection and a hat. I’m a natural redhead though, with freckles so I am in a higher risk group. BCCs vary in appearance, from small red flaky areas; scabs that bleed but don’t heal, or pearly little lumps, often with a central depression. They are generally painless,

although sometimes they can be itchy or bleed a little if you catch them with your nail. I had to undergo a skin biopsy under local anaesthetic to confirm the diagnosis. The dermatologist was at pains to reassure me that BCCs rarely spread to other areas of the body and can be cured in almost every case, although treatment can be more complicated if the BCC has been present for a long time, or if it occurs in an awkward place, such as close to the eye or on the nose or ear. The commonest treatment for BCC is surgery under local anaesthesia. The BCC is cut away, along with some surrounding skin. There are generally just a few stitches but sometimes a skin graft is needed. Sometimes radiotherapy, curettage (scraping), cautery (heat treatment), cryotherapy (freezing treatment), photodynamic therapy (PTD), or creams may be used instead. My BCC was removed surgically. I was worried I would have a large scar as the wound seemed very large in comparison to the size of the lesion but six months later it’s faded so much that you can barely see it. Treatment is easier if a BCC is detected early. So, if you notice a new lesion on your face (or anywhere on your body) which is growing, or which bleeds and never really heals, or if your skin appearance has changed in any way don’t wait, consult your GP. It’s worth it.

NEW WAVE OF SCAMS When it comes to scams, we may think they have reached their pinnacle of sophistication and down right cheek – until the next one comes along! Many of us are now quite familiar with telephone fraudsters claiming to fix our non-existent computer problems or offering help after the accident we didn’t actually have. This has been the summer of scams, in the form of postal, telephone and on-line fraud attempts – targeting everyone from holidaymakers to online daters. One of the latest and perhaps not so well-known scams is again targeting consumers, this time via automated phone calls pretending to be from their bank or credit card company. Banking and finance trade association UK Finance has said it has received dozens of reports of these scams, and is urging consumers to stay alert. Victims have received an automated phone call claiming to be from their bank or card provider, saying there has been a suspicious transaction on their account. They were then asked to verify the transaction by pressing a number on their phone to take them through to an "agent" – who is actually a fraudster. UK Finance is reminding consumers of five warning signs to look out for during a phone call, which suggest that the caller could be a scammer:

It is always worth remembering that your bank, card provider or the police will NEVER contact you asking for personal information or requesting you to transfer money to another account. If you feel uncomfortable or suspicious during a call, hang up and call your bank or card provider directly on its official phone number. And it doesn’t end there… Tax tricksters claiming to be from HMRC are also making misery for those running their own business through phishing scams. This is where an email purporting to be from HM Revenue & Customs can cause the recipient to become unnerved by content requesting money allegedly owed to the ‘tax man’. Scam emails of this sort not only look official but can often look like they’ve been sent from official government email addresses, making them harder to spot. Scammers sometimes even sign off phishing emails with the name or signature of a genuine HMRC employee for added authenticity. According to the National Trading Standards eCrime unit, HMRC is particularly used by fraudsters to scam consumers around tax deadlines, but can  The caller is insistent and doesn't give you time to think or tries to stop you happen at any time. The main aim of these emails speaking to a family member or friend  The caller asks you to transfer money is to steal money from your bank account, persuade you to send to a different account money, or get enough personal  The caller asks for your online banking passwords or four-digit card PIN information to sell on to other criminals who perform identity theft.  The caller asks you to withdraw money and hand it over for "safekeeping"  The caller offers to send a courier to your home to collect cash, PINs, cards or cheque books to "protect" you from fraud If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it to ActionFraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040. Money Matters by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

VAT Reverse Charge for Building Services New Guidance This brief explains that the introduction of the domestic reverse charge for construction services will be delayed for a period of 12 months until 1 October 2020 Background A domestic reverse charge means the UK customer who gets supplies of construction services must account for the VAT due on these supplies on their VAT return rather than the UK supplier.

This removes the scope for fraudsters to steal the VAT due to HMRC and follows similar measures introduced in response to criminal threats for mobile telephones, computer chips,

emissions allowances, gas and electricity, telecommunication services and renewable energy certificates. There has been a long lead-in time ahead of the anti-fraud measure coming into force. The Government first confirmed it would be taking this measure forward at Autumn Budget 2017. A technical consultation on the draft legislation and its impact took place in summer 2018 and the final legislation and guidance were published in November 2018. The long lead-in time was to allow for potential cash-flow and administrative impacts the change could have on businesses. Businesses need to adapt their accounting systems for dealing with VAT and there will be a negative impact on the cash-flows for many affected businesses, as they will no longer get VAT payments from customers for

services where the reverse charge applies.

Explanation of the Change Industry representatives have raised concerns that some businesses in the construction sector are not ready to implement the VAT domestic reverse charge for building and construction on 1 October 2019. To help these businesses and give them more time to prepare, the introduction of the reverse charge has been delayed for a period of 12 months until 1 October 2020. This will also avoid the changes coinciding with Brexit. From surveys made, it seems a large number of VAT and CIS registered businesses that fall under this new Domestic Reverse Charge, do not fully understand this new scheme. If we can help in this matter or any other, please do not hesitate to contact us.
