Alison McGuinness, President
The Dogs Trust We were visited at this month’s meeting by Kate from The Dogs Trust in Snetterton, Norfolk The Trust was set up in 1891 with the mission to bring about the day when all dogs can enjoy a happy life. Now a nationwide charity, we were informed about the illegal puppy smuggling trade, and how the Trust rehomes dogs. Some dogs are fostered instead of rehomed, and more sadly, sometimes when a person’s circumstances change, how to give up your dog, if this happens. A great charity doing some extremely hard work. A small group recently went to Tolethorpe Open Air Theatre to see Blythe Spirit. It was a lovely warm sunny evening, although a little windy, but the performance was wonderful, one of the best

YAXLEY WI In August, members and two visitors had a fun evening doing needle felting, despite several broken needles and pricked fingers! Yani, our tutor, provided many colours of wool and various shapes from which to make our own designs which could then be made into brooches. Every colour imaginable was used and designs varied from wildlife to Christmas trees. Although we are not of a violent nature it was quite therapeutic stabbing the wool, probably the same sort of feeling you get from kneading dough.

Yani also brought along pictures made of needle felting which were quite charming. At our meeting on 12 September we will be having a social evening together with an auction which, as well as raising money, usually results in much laughter! Visitors are very welcome to join us at the usual venue of the upstairs room at the Lancaster Club in Main Street at 7.30pm.

He is a member of the Yaxley Welcome Club and they gave him a 100th Birthday Party on his actual birthday. There was entertainment with the usual singing of the good old songs. Douglas knew them all and joined in the singing with a little dancing as well. He cut his 100th birthday cake which had been made by a fellow member who plays dominoes with him at their Tuesday Meetings. Douglas was born in Bow, EastLondon and in his early teens could be found washing cars for pocket money outside West Ham Football ground.
His first proper job was as a trainee butcher at Sainsbury’s. But then he was ‘called up’ into the Army. There he served in Poland, Germany, France, the Netherlands as well as Dear Old Blighty. He married whilst in the Army and after the war they settled in London. Douglas joined London Transport as a bus driver and was allocated to the No 53 Bus. Still a sentimental number for him. He and his wife came to live in Yaxley about 40 years ago. They moved into a brand new bungalow and with the help of his daughter he still lives there and still enjoys life to the full. He has grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. They all love him dearly as does he love them. A Wonderful Man.
The Lancaster Club, Yaxley Wow, what a busy, yet fantastic couple of weeks it’s been for the Lancaster Club! After several months of planning, our annual beer fest kicked off on a warm Friday with a great evening of country music featuring several local and wellknown artists. On the Saturday we dedicated the day to more of a rock theme, again enjoying some great music and downing several pints of real ale as well as sampling the variety of gins available. Despite the torrential downpours at times everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, with many people returning on Sunday for a karaoke session in the afternoon. Then we did it all again a week later as we celebrated the Lancaster Club’s 50th birthday. To mark this special occasion we were assisted by members from 511 squadron (Ramsey) RAF Air Cadets, who raised our new ensign to open the event and provided an excellent short drill display. Members and guests enjoyed a birthday cream tea in the marquee, entertained by Rosie & Matt, our local ‘Chas & Dave’. Festivities continued in the evening with
excellent performances by singers BetiGee & Stacey Wood. The Lancaster club would like to thank all those members and nonmembers who, despite the very poor weather at times, came along and supported our events. It was great to see so many people, old and new in the club enjoying what was on offer. Also, we would like to thank the tolerance of the local residents who perhaps had their normal peaceful weekends slightly disrupted. October sees another popular event at the Lancaster Club with another German Octoberfest night on Saturday 12 October. The event is also open to non-members (subject to being signed in) so why not come along for a good night of entertainment as well as reasonably priced fine German beer and food. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Lancaster Club, why not pop in for a quick drink and have a chat with our bar staff who can give you details on becoming a member.

Yaxley Football Update
By Andy Furnell
We started the pre-season with plenty of optimism after a strong finish to last season We have had a busy pre-season with incomings and outgoings and a pretty condensed bunch of fixtures, mainly down to being invited to compete in the Hunts FA 125 Year History Cup which was based on a two-league system consisting of 4 teams in each league. We managed to win our side of the draw beating Biggleswade, St Neots and Eynesbury to get to our first final of the season (TBC) where we will play St Ives Town. Pre-Season is always challenging, as player availability can be awkward because of holidays and the odd injury. However, it has given us a chance to take a good look at a few of the younger lads and the reserves, and that has been a positive Results have been indifferent as they always are, but we are getting close to where we need to be fitness wise so hopefully, we will hit the ground running, so I’m really looking forward to where this season can bring us moving forward.
Yaxley FC 200 Club Draw The May winners are; 1st prize of £80 to Neil Waumsley, 2nd prize of £47 to Vernon Clarke and the 3rd prize of £28 to Mick Bogusz. The next draw is on 13 August for July winners. Good luck to all! To join the 200 club please contact Steve Hook on 07792 648507 or Email hookys007@hotmail.com only £5 per month.

A New Season of Excitement Awaits With the new football season now in full swing, it is all systems go down at Yaxley FC The weather for the start of the season was generally very good for bowling, but the downpours we had in late July and early August have caused a few games to be postponed, including the Cecil Bradshaw cup which was twice cancelled for bad weather Overall, however, bowling has been very good, with another successful Open Triples day, with Viv Hempsell’s team winning. Yaxley had 4 successes at County Finals day, mostly with our ladies, with the winners going on to play at Skegness in the National Finals (all play their first round on Wednesday 21 August. Joan Robinson in the two-wood Champion of Champions Joyce Needham, Viv Hempsell and Kathy Browning in the Ladies two-wood triples and… Les Sharp (our only male representative) and Gill King in the twowood Mixed Senior pairs. On the 4 August we had our club Cook Cup, a poor day weather-wise meant a poor turn-out, nonetheless a good day was had by all who played, with one of our new members Terry Nash coming out on top, (pictured with our club President Mary Wiles).
In the leagues Club 60 - Yaxley Spitfires sit 4th, but with a game in hand on the top 3 clubs, which if they win could put them into 2nd spot. Midweek league - Yaxley Falcons are 9th in the Premier league and need a few result to go their way to avoid demotion, but Yaxley Kites sit 2nd in Div.1 and look good for promotion. Weekend league - Yaxley Sharks are also in 2nd place in the Premier league, with the Seals 5th in the same league.
Last season was another success for our local team as they established a solid finishing position in the league having got promotion the season before that. With the goal of survival achieved the focus for this season is to go one better if possible and with plenty of players in and out in the close season the squad is looking strong and exciting for a great 2019-20 campaign. The close season has not only seen some personnel changes but also some improvements to the already impressive facilities. The changing rooms have received a make-over while the new Broadway Garage stand has been liveried up, adding more covered seating for the fans on those wetter match days. It is with great thanks to Broadway garage for sponsoring this stand and without the support of companies like Broadway garage this club could not continue to serve the community. In fact Broadway Garage have also stepped up and sponsored the Yaxley FC Under 8 blues for this new season. A tremendous support we think you all will agree. First team manager Andy Furnell is rightly excited about what can be achieved by our village team this season, speaking as the new look team finished their pre-season preparations he said “We have had a busy pre-season with incomings and outgoings and a pretty condensed bunch of fixtures this was mainly down to being invited to compete in the Hunts FA 125 year history cup which was based on a two-league system consisting of 4 teams in each league, we managed to win our side of the draw beating Biggleswade, St Neots and Eynesbury to get to our first final of the season which is TBC where we will play against St Ives Town. Add this on top of beating Lincoln City in a pre-season friendly and the village has every reason to feel positive about their local team. It would be great to get some more of the local community down to support your local team, as they look to another season representing the good name of Yaxley.

Yaxley FC Youth The youth season also finished on a high with the under 14s grabbing victory at the Holbeach summer sixes tournament. We hope we can expect many more great stories like this as this year Yaxley FC will also be widely represented across the local youth leagues with 11 junior teams competing in across a wide range of age groups. In addition to last years youth teams we now have a newly formed Under 7s team, the Under 8s now have two teams entered into the league and we also have a newly formed under 9s team and Danny Clifton has joined the Cuckoos bringing with him his successful under 15s team. We are all looking forward to an exciting year of community focussed football.

Talking Bugs
nature watch
naturewatch Bugs are capable of complex and amazing communication with each other, with other animals and with plants These communications evolved to enable bugs to avoid threats, secure resources, and breed. However, the threats to bugs from humans far exceed the communication ability of bugs. Communication depends on an organism emitting a signal and another organism receiving the signal. There are several mediums that can carry this information. Humans perceive the world primarily through ‘audible’ sound and ‘visible’ light, with important added information from touch, smell and taste. We struggle to even conceive perception outside these parameters, but many organisms build up their ‘picture’ of the world in a way that is alien to humans.
BUG FACTS Moths see in colour (not black and white) even on the darkest night

Circle Many insects see ultraviolet light that is invisible to us Circle Mosquitoes ‘see’ in infrared – they detect heat Circle Crickets and many other animals hear ultrasound; sounds above our hearing range Circle Senses of smell and taste vary widely depending on the animal’s specific chemical detectors Circle Some insects perceive a world of electrical fields Circle Bees and other animals sense magnetic fields
Wildflowers Bloom at Nene Park In summer 2016, corporate volunteer groups from organisations including, Lloyds, Skanska, YBS and the Environment Agency all dedicated their time to Nene Park with the aim of increasing the number of wildflowers in the Park – it has taken a few years but the fruits of their labour are now in bloom Chris Park, environment project development officer at Nene Park Trust, the charity which manages Nene Park commented: “In the UK, we know that bee populations are in decline. We want to play our part in providing a range of wildflowers to provide bees with local food sources across the seasons. “Our visitors may well have noticed over the last five years or so that we have been mowing less of the grass around Nene Park. Not only does this reduce our carbon footprint but the long grass also does wonderful things for wildlife. Thanks to our volunteers and their support in planting a greater number of wildflowers, we’ve been able to develop numerous pockets of wildflowers across the Park which the bees are very much enjoying!” Nene Park is committed to planting native wildflowers, especially those which have evolved here in this area of the UK alongside other native wildlife and organisms. This means that they often benefit each other and are more
attractive to a wider range of pollinators including moths, butterflies, beetles, flies and of course bees. Nene Park uses reputable seed merchants but where possible, with volunteer help, collects and uses wildflower seeds from elsewhere in the Park. Chris added: “Turf turning was an experiment to see if we could introduce more wildflowers to the Park. It has taken time, but I’m pleased to say that it works and the numerous pockets of colourful wildflowers buzzing with pollinators are testament to all the effort of our volunteers. By flipping sections of turf upside down and sowing seeds in those areas, it was such a simple thing for us to do! But the impact on the environment is really significant – it’s great to see the beautiful flowers now in bloom.” Why not explore Ferry Meadows this summer and enjoy the long grasses and colourful wildflowers? Watch the bees buzzing and the butterflies flutter by, especially around Oak Meadow and Coney Meadow!

farm land
farmland
Hi all, Lisa writing from the farm just as we’ve finished this by Lisa Martin year’s harvest. What a trying harvest it was! We found ourselves dodging rain all summer as we waited with baitedbreath for the perfect moment to bring out the combine and gather in our readied crops. With that came long days as we brought in the wheat, barley, and oilseed rape as quickly as we could until the rainfall stopped the process at any moment it pleased. Our crops were in danger of becoming water logged which would then lead to rot or germination. Excessive rain mixed with strong winds caused some damage to our fields by flattening the crops and causing the sprouting of the grains we sought to harvest. We learned much through this year’s harvest and feel confident that we worked hard to do all we could to create the best outcome. As the end of summer approaches, we turn our eyes towards starting a new harvest year. Preparing the ground and sowing the next year’s crops are at the top of the list. September is the time of year that children go back to school and really, it’s back to school for us as well. In the last few years, we launched a free program called ‘Facetime a Farmer’ which seeks to connect farmers with classrooms through FaceTime or
Skype to discuss ideas, ask questions, share knowledge and gain a ‘real-time’ understanding of the issues farmers face every day. The students have the opportunity to ask questions and see what happens on the other side of the farm gate, reinforcing curricular learning with real life examples in the UK countryside. For more information or to register as a farmer or a teacher visit www.facetimeafarmer.com I am so looking forward to the start of autumn with its show of golden leaves, the night drawing in with fires being lit, and where our oven will continue to turn out crumbles with this season’s fruit. Coming into season this month in the UK be on the look-out for: apples, blackberries, broccoli, butternut squash, carrots, celery, courgettes, damsons, elderberries, fennel, leeks, lettuce & salad leaves, onions, plums, potatoes, pumpkin, runner beans, spring onions, sweetcorn and wild mushrooms. And as always, thank you for supporting British farmers! ‘Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.’ Robert Louis Stevenson

Holme Primary We are a small, inclusive, primary school in the beautiful village of Holme
Yaxley Parents and Toddlers Group - 40 Years Young
“Pupils are a joy…They mix happily together at breaktime and lunchtime and move in a very orderly manner around the highly attractive school environment….Pupils have a very strong work ethic…” Ofsted, ‘Good’ school judgement, March 2017 We have excellent teaching across the school with children making strong progress from their starting points. Our recent KS2 SATs outcomes for Yr 6, including 100% for reading, place our school significantly above the national average, meaning that our children leave primary school well equipped for their secondary education. “There is an outstanding sense of valuing all as precious children of God” SIAMs Church Inspection, ‘Good’ Church school judgement, January 2018). We provide a rich, varied curriculum, including a KS2 Apprenticeship Programme where the children learn about wonderful and varied careers, through workshops, visitors and visits. We care deeply about each and every one of our children and work hard to ensure that each one reaches their potential. We are taking bookings for places at the Open Morning for the Reception class of September 2020 which will be held in October. Please telephone the school office to book your place. We also have places in some other year groups. Please call the school office for details. School office : 01487 830342 www.holme.cambs.sch.uk
Our group was founded in 1979 by the Vicar at that time, the late Reverend John Woodley and met in the vicarage, providing somewhere for parents and carers with pre-school age children to go, and the first of its kind in the village. In March of this year, we celebrated forty years with a party Nowadays, thanks to the generosity of Yaxley Parish Council, we enjoy the excellent facilities provided at Queen’s Park Hall and playing field. So, come along and spend some time in the company of other children with mums, grandparents, aunts, childminders (not forgetting dads, uncles and grandads too). All are welcome. We have fun toys, books and other ideal playthings for the younger members of our village. We are fortunate enough to be able to have outdoor play on the nicer days, too. We all sing and dance, enjoy refreshments and for parents, it is a good place to meet and swap childcare stories and ideas. Our school is going from strength to strength! With fantastic KS2 SATs results for our Yr. 6 children and a ‘Good’ result from our Church inspection, we are proud of our school and warmly welcome prospective families for the next academic year. We were thrilled to have received an outcome of ‘Good’ following our Church Inspection in July. The report recognised the way in which the school supports our children and their families to thrive and flourish. It praised the way in which the staff, parents, governors and children work together to be the very best they can be, academically, personally and spiritually. Please read the full report by visiting our school website www.stiltonprimary.co.uk Please also call the school office to book a place at the Open Morning for the Reception class of 2020 which will be in October. We also have places in some other year groups. Please telephone 01733 240480 for more information.

A screening of the film made about the remarkable excavation of a WW2 Spitfire back in 2015, raising remnants of the plane which crashed (in land now part of the Great Fen) in November 1940, in which pilot officer Harold Penketh lost his life. The dig was a highly successful and memorable time for all involved, and engaged the interest of people across the country with high levels of media attention. All the teams worked wonderfully well together with a strong sense of camaraderie which will stay with us for a long time - and the memory of Harold Penketh now lives on in a far more tangible way." Three Hidden Gems in the Heart of Peterborough Here are our top three favourite hidden gems in the heart of Peterborough.
The Priestgate Vaults Escape Rooms Located in one of the city’s most historic buildings, Peterborough Museum has a wealth of stories to fascinate and enthral the whole family. With amazing objects and interactive displays for all ages, the collections comprise over 200,000 items of great national and international importance. Deep beneath Peterborough Museum are a number of cellars which date back to the year 1536. Older than the current Museum building itself and reflecting nearly 500 years of Peterborian history, the museum cellars were opened in 2015 as The Priestgate Vaults - an attraction which allowed visitors to meet people who lived on the site of the Museum and hear stories of its history. Now, a new experience has come to Peterborough Museum; The Priestgate Vaults Escape Rooms. Each vault illustrates a different time period which is used to create the eerie atmosphere and storylines of the various escape rooms. In 1536, the vaults were at ground level in a Tudor Manor House, and you are challenged to uncover the secret clues hidden in Peterborough’s very own Humphrey Ormes parlour, or to solve the mystery of the 1815 Georgian wine cellar. The last vault is set in 1854 where it was used as a morgue, but can you escape or will you be buried alive?

Church Service and Quarter Peal Conington attracts a team of bellringers from Suffolk Most of you will be aware that twice every year we hold a 1662 Choral Evensong in the 'closed'church at Conington, just south of Norman’s Cross on the old A1. The service is usually heralded by a team of ringers who call us to worship on the tower’s 6 bells. On 22 September, we will hold the service at 3 pm but are to be treated to a team of ringers coming from Suffolk to ring a “Quarter Peal”. This will take about 45 minutes and will take place between 2 and 3 pm. We wish this team every success in achieving their “Quarter” and we will also welcome all of you who enjoy this traditional form of choral worship. See you all at 3 pm. More details from Revgordonlimbrick@gmail.com

Railworld Wildlife Haven Described as a ‘hidden gem’ by almost all of its visitors and now in its 30th year, Railworld Wildlife Haven is an amazing family day out that even the dog can enjoy! With its very own nature haven, 2,000 square foot of model railway and other exhibits, the Railworld Wildlife Haven charity is run solely by volunteer workers and is an exciting and intriguing way to spend an afternoon in beautiful scenery, whatever the weather. Children can enjoy learning more about trains and nature through interactive activities that encourages families to spend as much time as they want in this welcoming environment. Benches and picnic spaces are placed all around the area, providing ideal locations to enjoy your lunch with a view. A great place to explore, described as ‘a wonderful experience,’ ’inspiring’ and ‘a fun adventure’ by various visitors, it is only a 10-15 minute walk from the city centre. www.railworld.org.uk
Thee Bumble Inn Again, only a short walk from the city centre is Peterborough’s first micropub, The Bumble Inn. Opened in 2016, and voted as 2018 Peterborough CAMRA pub of the Year, this is a great place to have a late afternoon drink either by yourself, or with friends and family. All their beer, lagers and ales have been carefully selected from local and national breweries and there’s even a very handy sample and buy platter allowing you to choose a few beers of your choice to try. In addition to their vast selection of beers, The Bumble Inn also supplies a wide range of soft drinks, spirits, wines and tea and coffee. They also stock a range of fun and unique snacks which include their very own homemade pork pies. People describe ‘very good cask beer quality’, ‘best pint of lager’ and ‘lovely pork stroganoff pies’ at The Bumble Inn, but don’t just take their word for it … chill out, taste beers and meet new people in this friendly atmosphere from 12pm daily. www.facebook.com/bumbleinn https://thebimbleinn.wordpress.com

inspire Farewells and Greetings It is always difficult to say goodbye to people who have shared our happiness and our sad times over many years Our Dear Friend and Minister Rev. Gareth Baron and his wife and daughter left us for pastures new at the end of July. Gareth will not only be missed by his congregations but also by many young people in Yaxley. He took part in and led many fun filled assemblies in William de Yaxley School. We wish them every happiness in their new home and school and a smooth transition into Gareth's new Ministry. We are now looking forward to welcoming our new Minister, Rev. Shameela Jameelee-Samuel and her husband. Our first service together with her in our Chapel will be Harvest Festival. A perfect time to give thanks for all good things around us ! This year Our Chapel is celebrating it's 150 year anniversary, as I mentioned in an earlier Gazette. We have found a couple of interesting events that also happened that year. 2 May Devon and Cornwall are linked by a revolutionary new bridge. Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Saltash suspension railway bridge across the Tamar was built. This bridge afforded much speedier transport to England's most remote western county. 31 May Big Ben rang out over the Houses of Parliament for the first time. All three of these are still standing but we are the nearest to you, so you can come and visit us more often. 14 September Coffee morning starts at 10am. Come early to be sure of the first choice of delicious homemade cakes and scones. 29 September Harvest Festival Service starts at 10.30am. Sundays Sunday Services start at 10.30am every week. history
Peterborough and Is there a link between Peterborough and Britain’s most famous outlaws: Robin Hood and Little John? It’s a lovely romantic legend. Let me explain Picture if you will, two small standing stones to the west of Peterborough, just off the old A47 near the village of Castor. They sit on the side of the slight hill overlooking Ferry Meadows. To get to them you take the left turn, off the old A47, above the hill leading down into Castor, which will put you onto the access road leading down to Milton Ferry Bridge. The two stones are situated about 200 yards down on the right; access to them is via a recently constructed path leading from the road onto sloping ground which gives you the view
and the grooves in the stones were caused by disturbance caused by the passage of the arrows fired. As in all legends and stories there is a grain of truth hiding amongst the tales. They have stood since 'time out of mind'. Well, slightly shorter; they are now reliably estimated to date back to Roman times. As in all things concerning the expansion of the Roman Empire; very shortly after arriving here, in 43AD, our Roman guests took steps to consolidate their position and by 44AD had constructed their
over Ferry Meadows. Here at the end of the path is, a small enclosed area in which sit the Standing Stones. As can be seen, the display area is now very sadly neglected; a fact I consider looking into. The work undertaken to move them from their original site, to where they now are, was funded by the National Lottery. They used to sit much further down the bank, quite near to the River Nene. There are a few legends concerning the stones, one of which involves Robin Hood and Little John firing arrows from Waternewton and the stones mark the spot where the arrows fell; another variation of this, is the stones were already in place
large, fortified camp at Longthorpe and stationed the Ninth Legion there; some 2400 men. For those of you who might be interested in a little more detail; irrespective of where the Roman Army built their main camps, they were always constructed to the same grid plan. So Marcus Aurelias, who was stationed in Morocco one year and then moved to sunnier climes in Britannia the following, when arriving at his new posting, knew exactly where everything was situated. Here, on the banks of the River Nene, close to where Milton Ferry Bridge stands they determined a safe crossing point on the river and placed two marking stones, to
By Bill Watt
indicate this crossing point. As time went by and the Romans carried on with their construction of Ermine Way; the military road going north, there was a requirement for a bridge to cross over the Nene. The logical place to build it was following the line of Ermine Street; this was at a point we now call Water Newton. For safety reasons the also constructed a temporary, 'flat pack' timber fort, used for approximately three months. At the same time, a Roman town began to grow, which we all know as Drurobrivae; meaning 'Fort by the Bridge'. This is the first appearance of Peterborough’s standing stones; unless future archaeology throws a different light on the subject. That is the wonderful thing about history, our understanding of things past is always open to change. We now fast forward to the early Middle Ages, some years after King Alfred the Great and his daughter established a unified and united England and the Church became an established and fixed point within English Life. At this time, the area which is now Greater Peterborough, was called, among other things, the Soke of Peterborough. It was a separate and individual Diocese and shared a border with the Diocese of Ely; exactly as it does now, in 2019. The stones then became a physical marker of that border. So, there is a direct link in the purpose of the stones in Roman Britain and Anglo Saxon Britain.

RSPCA - Yaxley
The RSPCA charity shop in Yaxley opened in June 2018
Andrew and Sharon rely on a dedicated team of volunteers to ensure the shop runs smoothly. A number of the volunteers work for a few hours each week while others do up to three full days. This latter group is generally working to gain experience which will assist them in getting back to full time employment. Both managers are extremely grateful to all the volunteers and want to say a massive ‘thank you’ to all of them. If you’d like to join the team, please call or pop in to the shop to discuss. The work of the RSPCA is extensive, providing care to sick and injured animals 24 hours a day, 365 days
We want to thank everyone who has donated items for us to sell. We are always keen to receive donations and can take clothing, kitchen goods, bric-a-brac, curtains, bed linen, toys, games and small pieces of furniture. This list isn’t exhaustive, so if in doubt, give us a call. Remember, if you are a taxpayer you can register as a Gift Aider, meaning the charity can claim back more money to help us look after more animals. We welcome your continued support whether through donations or purchases. We are a friendly bunch, so please pop in and see what we have to offer.
Manager, Andrew Hart, pictured with his deputy, Sharon.
“Support from the local community has been wonderful, enabling us to raise valuable funds to support the care of local animals and wildlife.” Manager, Andrew Hart of the year. A recent example involved 10 kittens who were rescued suffering with cat flu. 9 of them are now inoculated, neutered and ready for loving homes.
Purchasing from us is a wonderful way to recycle preloved items and it allows you to do your bit for animals and the environment.

Simba
PET TOYS
Part One Raising Awareness of Unthinkable Dangers Playing with your pet is a great way to exercise and bond with them but unfortunately it can occasionally end in tragedy as one local pet owner recently found out Simba was a beautiful healthy German Shepherd who loved to play fetch with his owner on their daily walks and his favourite was his ball. They’d played like this so many times before without any problem until one fateful day in early August. As Simba was retrieving his ball, he suddenly starting choking. It all happened so quickly and as his owner tried in vain
“I feel I have been robbed of my baby through a preventable accident, if only I had known the danger he was in when playing with balls he would still be here next to me. My message to everyone is that I have found out the hard way that all dogs are capable of swallowing balls. It’s like playing Russian roulette with their
"I have found out the hard way that all dogs are capable of swallowing balls. It’s like playing Russian roulette with their lives. " to get the ball out, she felt utterly helpless. Simba was rushed the nearest vet and even though the vet managed to remove the ball, it was too late. Poor Simba died of heart failure, he was just 5 years old. Why are we telling you this heartbreaking story? Because we, and Simba’s owners, want to raise awareness of toy safety. There are many toys on the market and not all are safe for all size pets. This is what Simba’s owner has to say: Cromwell Vets 01487 800199
lives. You are helpless to help them once it’s in their throat and it takes just minutes to kill them. Please don’t make the same mistake I did thinking it was physically impossible for them to swallow one.” Balls aren’t the only toy that can cause a problem – we’ve seen dogs swallow toys whole, cats eat ribbons from toys, ingested soft toy stuffing (all of which can cause a dangerous gut obstruction) and broken or hard toys causing mouth or tooth
injuries. There are also long term implications from the repetitive actions of too many fetch games – arthritis, ligament damage and tooth erosion. And that’s not to mention the horrendous injuries we have seen from when owners substitute a toy for a stick. “Simba was a huge softy and didn’t have a malice bone in his body. He was loved by all who knew him and was a very special, friendly boy that got on with everyone including all dogs/chickens/ sheep/horses. I was so proud of him for being such a gentleman, he was my Guardian Angel and was always by my side. Please don’t think because your dog has played with balls for years that it won’t happen, because my Simba had also played with balls for years! It CAN happen at any time! And then it’s too late!” In memory of Simba, 2014-2019. Everyone at Cromwell Vets wish to send their deepest condolences to Simba’s owners.
Next month – choosing the right toy for your pet and how to minimize the injury risk.

Volux at The Cosmetic Clinic
As we age our face loses volume - sometimes quicker in certain people. This contributes to the lines deepening and making us look older or sad. The deep lines from the nose to mouth (known as Nasolabial lines) can be softened considerably and the lines which go A B from the sides of the mouth to the chin (known as Marionette lines). These are caused by the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin by over exposure of the sun for many years, weight loss and of course ageing etc. Fortunately, these lines can be softened and made less prominent which makes you look A B fresher and younger as the dermal filler helps stimulate the collagen again as well as plumping up the areas treated which is a big boost for your confidence and self-esteem. Volux is the latest Juvéderm filler and is designed to be used to sculpt and contour the chin and jaw area, giving facial definition by the restoration of volume. It’s now a top favourite and clients really notice the difference they see. There are other A Before treatment / B One month after treatment Juvéderm dermal fillers for the lower face too.

TATT
Are You Tired All The Time? How do you feel when you wake up? Are you refreshed and ready for the day? Or do you feel drained, like you've hardly slept. GPs report that more patients are complaining of lack of energy. The syndrome even has its own name, TATT - which means tired all the time. If you constantly feel lethargic it is important not to ignore it. TATT is common but there are steps you can take to help yourself. There are many different causes of fatigue, and a good place to start is a chat with your GP. If you feel overwhelming exhaustion, which gets worse rather than better with activity, and does not improve with rest, you might be suffering from myalgic encephalopathy (ME) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). There is not a definitive cure for these conditions but there are treatments and self-help measures that can help to ease the symptoms. A GP will test for other medical problems that can cause tiredness, such as anaemia, thyroid issues, food intolerances or diabetes. Many cases of TATT are related to mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety. Traumatic life events, stress and money worries can also cause fatigue. Talking therapies can help in these cases, and your
doctor may be able to refer you to a counselling service. If a GP has ruled out more serious underlying causes but you still feel tired, there are lifestyle changes that will help. First make sure you’re getting enough good quality sleep. Make it a priority for a few weeks to see how much better you feel. The Royal College of Psychologists’ advice is to have both a regular bedtime and wake time, and avoid napping. If you struggle to drop off try a soak in a warm bath before you go to bed because this will make you feel calm, and the drop in body temperature when you exit the bath fools the body to start to prepare for sleep. Reduce your stress levels by scheduling relaxation time into your day. This could be something as simple as listening to your favourite music or meeting friends for a chat. A good diet also plays a role in increasing your energy levels. Try eating small snacks throughout the day, rather than one large meal in the evening. Avoid alcohol and drink more water. Cutting caffeine will also help but cut down gradually to minimise the risk of headaches. Finally, a little light exercise is another proven way to fight fatigue. Even a quick 15-minute walk around the block will give boost your energy.

BATTLE AGAINST THE SCAMMERS
It seems that not a week goes by lately without warning of a new scam – with cyber criminals becoming more and more sophisticated An email from a supposed legal or Government source can be so convincing that it can fool even the shrewdest among us, as can a request to transfer money or pay a bill. However, the fight against scams is hotting up. As well as the many reliable channels which can inform and advise about scams (including the UK Action Fraud), there is also a user-friendly Friends Against Scams website - a National Trading Standards Scams Team initiative which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to 'Take a Stand Against Scams.' Friends Against Scams is designed to inspire action, highlight the scale of the problem, change the perceptions of why people fall for scams and make scams a community, regional and national topic. And what’s more, Friends Against Scams offers a free, easy-to-use online learning service where anyone can learn about the different types of scams and how to spot and support a victim. The session – which takes around 15 minutes to complete – can be done in the comfort of your own home, in the workplace or even on your phone. Upon completion you will even receive a certificate. Find out more by visiting: www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/training/friends-elearning With increased knowledge and awareness, people can make scams part of everyday conversation with their family, friends and neighbours, which will enable them to protect themselves and others. Friends Against Scams also offer easily accessibly awareness sessions run by SCAMchampions, who are trained and supported by the NTS Scams Team. Each 45-minute awareness session is fun and interactive and a chance to meet other people who want to ‘Take a Stand Against Scams’. The website will have all the details. Scams can vary from postal to online. Don’t be caught out by things like: Phishing Where you receive an email that pretends to be from an authority (e.g., your bank) in which you’re asked to give out your passwords or personal information such as your address, telephone number, or other data. Pharming The fraudulent practice of directing online users to a fake website, which mimics the appearance of a real / legitimate one Romance Scams A confidence scam, whereby a criminal displays fake romantic intentions towards a victim in order to gain their affection to then extort money Impersonation of UK officials Criminals impersonate a UK official to obtain personal information by claiming that the victim is due a refund or must make an urgent payment Ad Clicking Where hackers encourage you to click on a link (perhaps by email, or on a webpage) which will then open malware or simply ask for your personal info. For details of existing and latest scams to affect the public, trades and businesses across Cambridgeshire visit cambridgeshireinsight.org.uk/capasp/ Safe Local Trades are proud to be a partner of this initiative.

Thinking of Selling Your Home? Here is where to start... Speak to a mortgage broker
Ask questions!
To get an understanding of what you can afford to buy your next home; it’s important to know you can move and what you can buy before coming onto the market.
Ask the estate agents to see how many houses they have sold in your postcode this year and out of those how many have actually completed. The higher sold to completed percentage shows that the estate agent will look after you and the process.
Get your house for sale! Many people will wait until they find their dream home and then spring onto Rightmove before putting their own house up for sale, however, usually feel heartbreak as it is sold to someone more proceedable before they know it! Don’t miss out and get yours up for sale!
Have at least three agents value your home
How they will market your home? Do they use professional photography? Rightmove Premium Displays? Will they conduct an open house event?
Ensure you have a floorplan on your online advert Ensure you have a floorplan on your online advert. The majority of buyers won’t click onto your property for more details if it doesn’t have a floorplan!
This isn’t just for the valuation it is also to see who you trust the most to sell your home and what marketing packages they offer.
