Head to the events section of this edition as there are festivals and events galore. From the Beer Fest, Gin and Prosecco Fest through to seeing the magnificent instalment of Gaia at Peterborough Cathedral. As the summer holidays draw to a close, it’s back to school again. So we’ve compiled some helpful tips on avoiding the back to school panic. For me, it seems like yesterday that I was helping them tie their shoes, but I have just celebrated both of my children’s graduations! Love,

Safe Barbecues
Summer's here – and whatever the weather, us Brits love our barbecues!
By Eileen Le Voi, Safe Local Trades & Service
www.safelocaltrades.com A great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the fellas to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun. If this sounds like your ideal BBQ (and what’s not to love?) then don’t allow anything to spoil it. The sad fact is that barbecues are involved in many hundreds of accidents that occur in the garden each year. Last time figures were collected through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/ LASS) in 2002, an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in the UK having had an accident involving a barbecue. The most common types of barbecue-related accidents as shown by the HASS/LASS figures were:
a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel. However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure you BBQ is fun-filled and not a flaming failure. To protect you, family and your home, it is advisable to have working fire alarms in your property and to generally be fire-safety savvy. And it’s not just barbecues that can cause an outdoor hazard:
• Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame – 800 • Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200
• Clear away unused garden hoses and tools – which can be easily tripped over.
The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as
• And finally, protect and secure your home and garden by securely locking back gates, sheds, garages and windows on balmy evenings.
Simple Safety Tips • Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture. • Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage and never light it in an enclosed space. • Never leave a barbecue unattended. • Never let children too close to the barbecue.
Untitled-3 5
• Ensure all lanterns and candles with a naked flame are fully extinguished when you leave the garden. • Never leave children unattended in or near inflatable pools or similar if they contain water. The same applies to garden ponds. Take care also when visiting other people’s gardens - children can drown in less than 3cm of water.
• Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. • If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder. • When choosing a barbecue, stability is essential - ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy • Check your barbecue is in good condition and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair.

Transformations on a budget The itch to redesign your home is something some people can scratch over and over again. Yet redoing your rooms can come at quite a cost, so here are some cheap and effective ways to transform your home on a budget Statement walls
Less is more
Redecorating an entire wall with wallpaper or paint can be excessively expensive. Instead opt for a focus wall in your house. This way it’s a lot cheaper to cover, and when you’re tired of this you can change it again and again! This works especially well with minimalistic colours such like whites, greys and creams. Then your feature wall does the talking!
Strip back your room from ornaments you don’t like anymore. Chances are you have one too many, and it can make your room feel cluttered without you realising. So instead of buying new, downsize on your accessories and go minimal. If something in your room, be it a canvas or a lightshade doesn’t make you feel good about the space, rethink. By no means get rid completely, they may look better in another room!
Give your items a new life Everyone loves some DIY and revitalising some pieces of your furniture can add something extra to a room. That old arm chair? Reupholster it! Check out your local market for different fabrics or have it done professionally. This would still cost less comparatively to a whole room. Paint is your best friend; turn that brown dresser in to a cool pastel blue. This can bring an entirely new look to a room. However, if you are painting furniture make sure you’re using the right paints and follow their specific instructions.
Rearranging your furniture This literally doesn’t cost a single penny, but it could take a little time. By rearranging your furniture you can breathe new life in to a space. Think about where natural light comes into the room. Most of us are guilty of planning our room around our TVs, while this may be a focal point it’s not the only one.

GARDEN SCENE
By Rachel Leverton
Ornaments polarise gardeners. They’re a love ‘em or hate ‘em subject. I fell firmly into the hate ‘em category. I thought they had a place in big country gardens but looked slightly tacky in suburbia. This antipathy may date back to my childhood and Mrs. Frost, our elderly neighbour, who had a front garden stuffed to the brim with gnomes, windmills and concrete toadstools. If our ball ever strayed into this shrine to kitsch she’d burst from her house with a banshee-like scream, brandishing a broom at us. Somewhere along the way though I’ve mellowed. As I’ve studied show gardens and magazines I’ve realised that ornaments have a definite place in a garden as long as two important considerations are met: Context The ornaments complement the style of the garden. Classical statuary doesn’t work in contemporary spaces, while traditional gardens might need to avoid stainless steel or modern, abstract sculptures. Size Ornaments should be an appropriate size for the setting. Rules are there to be broken of course and whatever your garden type or size the ornament you choose should be special to you.
My father had a grumpy gargoylelike creature, set among ferns at the bottom of his patch. It made everyone who saw it smile in recognition of my dad’s own avuncular manner. A girly friend of mine has a series of small bronze faeries set around her tiny plot, which are perfectly in tune with her personality. I favour natural materials myself but several years ago I purchased beautiful and rather elegant heron created from recycled metal. I adore it because it reflects both my love of birds and my passion for recycling. It stands near a boulder fountain and I occasionally brandish a broomstick at my sons when their football strays too near...

Ornament Ideas ...not a gnome in sight! To set off ornamental grasses try ceramic balls in vivid blues and greens set among cobbles.
Don’t be frightened to show your sense of humour. Quirky can look brilliant in the right setting.
For minimalist contemporary plots, mirrored columns and pyramids look striking.
Sculptor Dennis Fairweather’s best seller is a stone face and hands which emerge from a tub of water as if the figure had just been for a dip!
Classical statuary and urns look best in more formal, traditional settings. They are best made from marble or stone. Resin copies can look tacky.
Natural materials can be a good starting point for garden ornament novices. Balls and sculptures made from willow are subtle and elegant additions to any garden.

NATIONAL
Allotments Week National Allotments week runs from 12 to 18 August. Many of you may have been to an allotment when you were in school or you might think they’re only for the elderly. This is so wrong! Allotments are for everyone- if you don’t have a garden, if you want to escape the house and unwind, if you have a passion for all things home grown. There are so many benefits to using allotments. Allotments are a valuable resource to the community and to you as an individual. It gives you the chance to take pride in what you produce and meet like-minded people at the same time. Who might help you and offer some tips on how best to grow your vegetables. There are over forty different allotments in the Peterborough area, some are owned by the council and others which are privately owned including Green Backyard which is communal. Communal allotments don’t have specific plots assigned to users, whereas other allotments have specifically assigned plots. Some as little as 10 plots to huge allotments with 190! Further information, including contact information to enquire about having an allotment can be found on the Peterborough City Council website.

Extinction Rebellion (abbreviated as XR) is a socio-political movement with the stated aim of using civil disobedience and nonviolent resistance to protest against climate breakdown, biodiversity loss, and the risk of social and ecological collapse. Your Scene recently asked members of the Peterborough XR to explain more about their mission
https://rebellion.earth
Extinction Rebellion was established in the United Kingdom in May 2018 with about one hundred academics signing a call to action in support in October 2018, and launched at the end of October by Roger Hallam, Gail Bradbrook, Simon Bramwell, and other activists from the campaign group Rising Up! Citing inspiration from grassroots movements such as Occupy, Gandhi's Satyagraha, the suffragettes, Gene Sharp, Martin Luther King and others
in the civil rights movement, Extinction Rebellion wants to rally support worldwide around a common sense of urgency to tackle climate breakdown. A large number of activists in the movement have pledged to be arrested, and even to go to prison, similar to the mass arrest tactics of the Committee of 100 in 1961. The movement uses a circled hourglass, known as the Extinction Symbol, to serve as a warning that time is rapidly running out for many species.
Peterborough XR recently held a 'die-in', in Cathedral Square grounds to reflect the mourning of climate crisis deaths.

"We are asking people to find their courage and to collectively do what is necessary to bring about change."
XR Demands for the UK
"We are facing an unprecedented global emergency. Life on Earth is in crisis: scientists agree we have entered a period of abrupt climate breakdown, and we are in the midst of a mass extinction of our own making." XR, UK At the core of Extinction Rebellion’s philosophy is nonviolent civil disobedience. "We promote civil disobedience and rebellion because we think it is necessary - we are asking people to find their courage and to collectively do what is necessary to bring about change. We aren’t focused on traditional systems like petitions or writing to our MPs and more likely to take risks (eg arrest / jail time). We don’t want or need everyone to get arrested – for some this is not a good idea – but we do want everyone involved to support civil disobedience as a tool.
We are promoting mass “above the ground” civil disobedience – in full public view. This means economic disruption to shake the current political system and civil disruption to raise awareness. We are deeply sorry for any inconvenience that this causes. We are about political change, not personal change (though we welcome the latter). We are completely nonviolent, our actions are done in full public view and we take responsibility for them. We have an Action Consensus which outlines how we work together on actions." https://rebellion.earth/
Untitled-3 12
We are facing an unprecedented global emergency. The Government has failed to protect us. To survive, it’s going to take everything we’ve got. The Government must tell the truth about the climate and wider ecological emergency, reverse inconsistent policies and work alongside the media to communicate with citizens and communities. The Government must enact legally binding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and to reduce consumption levels.
We need a regenerative culture which is healthy, resilient and adaptable. We openly challenge ourselves and a toxic system, leaving our comfort zones to take action for change. We follow cycles of action, reflection, learning, and planning for more action, learning from other movements and contexts as well as our own experiences to create safer and more accessible spaces.
We avoid blaming and shaming as A national Citizen’s Assembly to oversee no one individual is to blame for what the changes, as part of creating a democracy has happened to our environment. fit for purpose. Yellow fish campaign continues The dangers of pouring waste down roadside drains is being highlighted as part of an ongoing campaign which sees yellow fish painted on pavements The Yellow Fish campaign had been launched by the Environment Agency and is centred on an international approach to protecting the environment. The scheme is based around the idea of stencilling a yellow fish symbol beside drains to remind people that any waste entering them may go directly to the nearest stream, river, lake, canal, beach or bathing water - causing pollution and killing wildlife. Peterborough City Council is supporting the campaign and has teamed up with another local school - Discovery Primary to help spread the message. As a part of the campaign Anglian Water officers have visited the schools to talk to youngsters about the dangers of pouring waste down drains and invited pupils to take part in an innovative competition. Children at the school were tasked to come up with their own yellow fish designs, with a winner chosen by the authority's drainage team.
The winner, Kenia Dannila, from Discovery Primary was presented with an image of their design and then watched a graffiti artist paint the image outside their school and also along the school road. Andrew Leadbetter, Sustainable Drainage Manager for Peterborough City Council, said: "We think this campaign is a great way of highlighting a very important issue. Seeing a big bright colourful fish and a message next to a drain makes people take notice. "The 2018 campaign has been successful and warmly received in the Werrington area by residents and we hope this success will continue here. We would ask everyone to spread this message because it is really important." An Anglian Water spokesperson said: “These roadside drains, which are managed by local councils, are only designed to take rainwater. Unlike our drainage network flow from roadside drains is not treated before it ends up back in our rivers and seas which is why it’s even more critical that we do not tip waste down drains.
"We all have a responsibility to care for and protect our environment and the Yellow Fish campaign is a great way of raising awareness of this issue.” As part of the Yellow Fish campaign, Peterborough City Council and Anglian Water are encouraging people not to put anything down roadside drains except rain water. In the past items that have been found in drains in Peterborough include: •
12 empty vodka bottles
•
Household and industrial paint
•
Wallpaper paste
•
A home which had a bad smell in drain outside. Drainage engineers came round and realised that previous homeowners had installed an on-suite and connected the sewage pipe with the main drain pipe (hence the smell in the roadside drain!
• For more information about the Yellow Fish campaign visit: www.peterborough.gov.uk/YellowFish For information and advice on drainage visit www.anglianwater.co.uk or www.peterborough.gov.uk

Volunteering with the Scouting Movement
Do you remember being part of the Brownies, Cubs or Scouts as a child? Do you remember how much fun it was and the opportunities you were given to camp out and cook marshmallows over an open fire?
Despite society and the media tarnishing young people with the same brush of only being interested in Youtube and computer games, there are many young children who enjoy, and desperately need the experiences which the Scouting movement has to offer. Beavers is the youngest group of the Scouting movement and runs as an introduction to all that Scouting has to offer. The children in Beavers are aged between 6 and 8 years old and meet for about an hour a week, gaining invaluable experiences such as trips, days out, sleepovers and gaining badges and challenges. For many children it is an opportunity to encounter a freedom which they may not have experienced before; running around a field in the dark and cooking over an open camp fire is something which leaves many parents feeling somewhat nervous! But with the organisation and knowledge of the leaders, these type of experiences can be life changing and incredibly memorable for the children. Climbing walls, Laser Force, parades, charity events, sailing and canoeing are regular activities which many children won’t have experienced before; this can help build confidence, help children to make friends as well as learning valuable life skills. Alongside these types of activities are the regular weekly meetings where children play games, explore their local community and work towards their badges. However, without the dedication of a team of volunteers these children wouldn’t be able to have these experiences. Beavers is run by leaders and assistants who are all volunteers and who dedicate their time to providing worthwhile experiences for children entering the Scouting movement. At the moment there are Beaver groups in the area who are in need of help if they are to continue, in particular a group in Nassington is desperate to continue but can only do so if a couple of volunteers are found. Do you have any time you could give? Do you know anyone who might want to be involved in Beavers? Do you have skills gained through years of experience in your working life which are going to waste in your retirement? Could you spare a couple of hours a week? You don’t have to commit to being a leader or to take over complete organisation of the group but an extra pair of hands would make all the difference and would be greatly appreciated by the Scouting movement and the local young children. made easy Back to School Easy and ‘Back to School’ might not be two words that you would see in the same sentence but it is possible. Whether it’s your first year with children going to primary school, or if you’re a pro with your children going to secondary school. The Back to School period can be a stressful time for parents, but here at Your Scene we’re here to make the process easier. 1. Get back in to a routine In the summer holidays it’s quite common that bedtime routines go out the window. Whether that’s because of social events or wanting to spend more time with your children. The school bedtime routine should be implemented around a week or two before going back. This way it will be easier for you and them starting
2. Make a to-do list or two Create a list of everything you need to buy and what you need to do. Don’t pressure yourself creating one exhaustive list, create a few separate lists to make it seem easier to tackle. Such as one list for uniform, another for stationary etc.
3. Food routines Rulebooks for breakfast and lunches disappear during the holidays. That’s ok for a treat, however before going back start them on their regular school packups and breakfasts once again. It will give them more energy and less likely to cause arguments when changing to go back to school.
5. Budget and buy early This is so important when it comes to Back to School. Decide your budget early on, this will help you from
Why we need Bedtime Stories
overspending in a panic buy. Buy early what you can, things like stationary, backpacks and food supplies.
6. Don’t overbuy Of course, your children want the newest lunch-box, PE kit bag or backpack. If the one they already have is still in a usable condition, keep it that little bit longer. Then if you need a new one at Christmas it’s less to spend in one go.
7. Get your children involved Promoting to your children that they have tasks to do to get ready for school will ease the pressure off of you. Of course tailor these, to your child’s age. If they’re in primary school, ask them to choose and fold their clothes the night before. Or if they’re in secondary school, ask them to create their lunches. By doing this in the summer holidays, it helps form a habit, rather than it being a chore going back to school.
8. Look at what you already have As before, the panic sets in and it’s easy to go and buy everything and anything they could need at school. However it’s worth spending some time going through the house and seeing what you do have. There could be spares of things you’ve bought and forgotten about.

Bedtime stories are a calming, fun and snuggly time and those are good enough reasons on their own for indulging. But bedtime stories have other benefits too.
Communication Reading is one of the most important communication tools available to us and is fundamental in establishing essential pathways in the brains of early learners. It enhances basic speech and reading skills, but less obvious skills such as, those required to make friends in the playground, and to concentrate in class.
Improved emotional understanding Most of us have cried or laughed at a good book. Bedtime reading can help us broach difficult topics in a safe environment. We can explore powerful

emotions through the medium of fiction. The shared experience of reading together fosters stronger connections and provide topics of conversations well beyond the fifteen minutes at bedtime.
Improves imagination and feeds curiosity The effect of reading on an individual’s imagination is unparalleled. Books allow our children to explore both our world and fictional ones. It can also help to express their individuality and help them discover interests that may not be covered at school.

Gaia
Luke Jerram
Gaia, an artwork by Luke Jerram, to be shown at Peterborough Cathedral, Monday 19 August to Sunday 15 September The touring artwork by Luke Jerram, is to be displayed in the Cathedral from Monday 19 August until Sunday 15 September. The same artist created the Museum of the Moon, which was shown at the Cathedral in October last year, attracting an estimated 40,000 visitors. Measuring seven metres in diameter, Gaia features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the earth’s surface*. The artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet on this scale, floating in three-dimensions. The installation, which will hang under the central tower of the Cathedral, creates a sense of the Overview Effect, which was first described by author Frank White in 1987. Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment. The 3D installation will rotate once every four minutes, 360 times faster than our real planet. During
evening opening times a specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning composer Dan Jones will be played, and the lighting of the piece shown to full advantage as dusk falls. The artwork is 1.8 million times smaller than the real earth with each centimetre of the internally lit sculpture describing 18km of the earth’s surface. By standing 211m away from the artwork, the public will be able to see the Earth as it appears from the moon. Luke Jerram said: “I was amazed and delighted that so many people came to see Gaia’s sister artwork Museum of the Moon when it was in Peterborough last year. This time visitors will be able to see the Earth as if from space; an
incredibly beautiful and precious place. An ecosystem we urgently need to look after – our only home. Halfway through the Earth’s sixth mass extinction, we urgently need to wake up, and change our behaviour. We need to quickly make the changes necessary, to prevent run away Climate Change. There really is no Planet B!” The Very Revd Chris Dalliston, Dean of Peterborough, said: “We are very excited to be able to exhibit this extraordinary work. The Museum of the Moon was a compelling installation and having this beautiful representation of our precious planet in Peterborough Cathedral promises to be an unforgettable experience. The planned programme of events
alongside the exhibition will offer opportunities both for fun and for learning not least about the critical environmental issues we face.” A programme of themed events will take place whilst Gaia is on display at the Cathedral, including activities for schools when they return from holidays in September. Details will be announced soon. Gaia will be open to the public free of charge during normal Cathedral visiting times. A series of special evening openings will show the artwork in its full glory with the accompanying soundtrack. The evening entry charge is £2 per person or £6 for a family ticket (2 adults, 2 children). Booking opens online soon. Gaia has been created in partnership with the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Bluedot and the UK Association for Science and Discovery Centres. Its showing at Peterborough Cathedral has been supported by the Peterborough Cathedral Development and Preservation Trust.
The imagery for the artwork has been compiled from Visible Earth series, NASA. Photography by Gareth Jones. For more information about the artwork, please visit http://my-earth.org/ and on social media #EarthArtwork

PETERBOROUGH BEER FE One of the biggest social events in Peterborough’s calendar starts the week of 20 – 24 August. It seems the entire city attends this event so don’t miss out. The Beer Festival, in it’s 42nd year, is where I see people that I may not have seen since last year’s event, a true Peterborian tradition. With over 400 beers, ciders, a wine bar and a gin bar there is something for everyone. An event for the whole family, under 18s may attend at no charge as long as they are accompanied by a responsible paying adult. Bring a picnic or buy some food from one of the many food stands. There is even a fun fair for the little ones. See you there!

Wednesday 21 August RAMSHACKLE SERENADE What started out as a bit of fun in the kitchen and has gone from strength to strength! Ramshackle Serenade are a four piece, a three piece, sometimes a duo or a five piece band (or more if the mood takes us). Performing the finest “Swingabilly” music around, Ramshackle Serenade have a happy vibe playing Rock and Roll with a twist. Songs are given the Ramshackle treatment much to the enjoyment of many and especially their happy band of followers, The Serenaders. With cool vocals, rockin’ Gretsch guitar, thumping Blues bass, legendary drumming and the odd tambourine, harmonica, or kazoo all thrown into the pot for good measure. Ramshackle Serenade have played in venues and at festivals up and down the country and love to get the audience jumping, clapping, stamping, kazooing and singing with their ‘Ramshackled” take on classic tracks plus their own original material. They have shared the bill with some amazing acts over the years including the likes of Johnny Marr, Frank Turner, The Selector, Fun Loving Criminals, Jools Holland and his Orchestra, Bad Manners, Squeeze and lots more besides. Ramshackle Serenade ….. a superb live band who are seriously fun! On stage from 8pm (approx.) RamshackleSerenade/ http://ramshackleserenade.com
Thursday 22 August VELOCITY Velocity are a fresh and high energy punk, indie and classic rock influenced power trio from Peterborough. Expect scenes like you have never seen before folks! On stage from 7.30pm (approx.) /Velocityrockband/
Thursday 22 August OUSE VALLEY SINGLES CLUB One of the most original outfits currently playing the live circuit. Influenced by the long forgotten sounds of 1950s Skiffle (Google it) they combine this sound with the energy of Punk and the swing of Rock and Roll, whilst occasionally dropping some Reggae into the mix. They layer this with hilarious Folk-like story-telling, often crossing the parameters of what is deemed to be politically correct but keeping it very tongue-in-cheek. A truly original & highly entertaining sound that has been dubbed “New Wave Skiffle”, described as ‘George Formby meets The Clash’. Highlights of their musical journey came when they supported luminaries Chas and Dave on their 2014 tour, warmed up for Sir Bob Geldof and The Boomtown Rats in the main arena at the Great British Alternative Music Weekender at Butlins Skegness as well as providing warm up for the likes of Pete Docherty, The Wonderstuff and the poetical musical comedy genius KATG. Clearly illustrating their appeal to audiences of all ages and musical backgrounds. On stage from 9pm (approx.) /theousevalleysinglesclub www.theousevalleysinglesclub.com

Friday 23 August LET THERE B/DC What makes AC/DC such an exciting, pulse pounding band and how do we recreate the fire of their live performances? That’s the main question we asked ourselves when we fired up the rock and roll train that was to become LET THERE B/DC in February 2011. Our current five man line-up have had AC/DC running through their veins since childhood and our passion for the music injects the venom into every show that we play. We deliver all the favourites such as Highway to Hell, Whole Lotta Rosie and Thunderstruck together with rare and seldom heard album tracks such as Walk All Over You, Soul Stripper and Kicked in The Teeth and many, many more. With our 3 original members consisting of Neil (Malcolm Young/Guitar), Paddy (Phil Rudd/ Drums) and Steve (Cliff Williams/Bass) making up the ‘engine room’, it gives our (Angus Young/Guitar) Dave and (Brian Johnson/Bon Scott/ Vocals) Andrew room to really fly and take our show to a whole new level. We pride ourselves on never usually playing the same set list twice, so you never know what you might hear! Whether you’ve been a fan from the very beginning or never seen us live before, we hope to see you all down the front. Are You Ready For A Good Time? Saturday 24 August THE CONTACTS In just two years The Contacts have established themselves as a very popular Soul Band, not just in Peterborough, but nationwide! Luke Allport, Chris Dunn & Les Wheeler, formed the band with the idea of bringing a select mix of upbeat Motown & Northern Soul to audiences that really wanted to dance! They were soon joined by Rachel Mizon on vocals and Cam Logan on keyboards, all having played together in projects in one form or another. The band has gone from strength to strength regularly playing sold out gigs at all the popular music venues of Peterborough. In late 2018 the very talented Gemma McDowell joined the band as lead female vocalist when she returned to the UK. Gemma has rapidly become the star of the show, sharing the lead vocals with Luke, and injecting a real sparkle into the gigs. The band has a lively varied repertoire and you will know that the audience will be dancing along from the very first song. Listening carefully their set it grows beyond that of Motown, but stays within the comfort zone of the genre. The Contacts provide a stunning set of musical entertainment, are an act not to be missed and looking forward to entertaining you at Peterborough Beer Festival 2019. On stage from 7.30pm (approx) /thecontactssoulband
Saturday 24 August BLURD 2019 marks the 25th anniversary of the release of the seminal Blur album, Parklife which was to feature in the UK Albums Chart for a massive 90 weeks and came to define the emerging Britpop scene in 1994. What better way to celebrate this anniversary than to have the amazing Blurd closing this year’s Beer Festival. Blurd is the UK's longest-running and most authentic tribute to Britpop legends Blur. Together since 2006, Blurd has performed as far afield as the Dublin Academy and the Isle of Wight Festival. Their approach is simple; to sound like and to look like Blur, and thousands of music lovers, festival-goers, and fans of Blur testify that they do just that! The last few years have been manic for the band, headlining stages at the Isle of Wight Festival and London’s O2, appearing at festivals alongside acts such as The Farm, Inspiral Carpets, The Happy Mondays, Cast, Lightning Seeds, Primal Scream, The Charlatans and more, as well as frequenting many university events and being asked to appear in a BBC documentary and a film about the rise of Britpop! THE
BIG APPLE
A brief history of cider
By Sarah Davey
Cider is a popular and delicious summer drink, but have you ever wondered who first thought about turning apples into alcohol? Apple trees have been cultivated since around the 5th century AD and cider, or something similar, seems to have been around for almost as long, although sometimes it was known as ‘apple wine.’ It was brought to Britain by the Normans in around 1100 AD and was originally a drink for the poor. Ale was made from malted barley and using grain for alcohol could mean going without bread, so cider provided a good alternative. People drank it instead of water because sanitation was so poor, and water was often not safe to drink. It is believed that children were even baptised using cider because the water was so risky! The first settlers in America planted lots of apple trees simply so they could continue to make cider to drink. Originally, they crushed the apples in a trough, until a genius named John Worlidge produced the first apple-mill in 1676. In the 1800s The Temperance movement killed off the cider industry. Fired up by speeches from ministers and politicians, many farmers destroyed their ‘demon orchards,’ sparing only the trees used for sweet non-alcoholic juice. During the Prohibition years, American cider production fell by 76%. Today the best English cider is cask-conditioned; dry and fruity, with low carbonation. Normandy cider is sweeter and more effervescent with a complex flavour. Both drinks are perfect chilled, served on a warm summer evening, with friends. Cheers!

Hello! I’m Michelle, a 48 year old married mum to two boys and a senior lawyer in local government. I share my daily outfits and styling tips on Instagram, just because I love to do it @maison_abbott
I started my Instagram account about 4 years ago. I have always had a creative side, with a lifelong love of clothes, (I wanted to be a fashion designer until life took me down a path which led me to a career in law!), and I had no real outlet for that until I started the IG account. The focal point of my Instagram account has always been, and still is, my daily outfit posts. This is always my actual outfit and I never fake it! What you see me wear in the morning is what I wear that day - not an outfit just photographed for that post. The only exceptions to this are where I’m sharing a post from a collaboration,

or showing some purchases, or trying on items in a shopping session. Either way, I’m completely honest about the origin of the post. What I aim to achieve through the account is to inspire women to be confident in their choices and push their boundaries - essentially - to wear what clothes they want to, and feel good in. There is usually a way to style things appropriately for any age - the key is the attitude and confidence of the wearer. My confidence has grown hugely in my 40s and I now know what suits me, enhances my shape, and what feels right. My shopping rule is that if I like the

outfit I’m already wearing more than the one I’m trying on - do not buy! When I started my account, I never imagined that it would bring so many opportunities. I love to collaborate with small brands and I have had some amazing opportunities. What it also gives me, is a space to be creative and to indulge in what I have always loved - fashion. It sounds clichéd, but in a life where I have a responsible and stressful career, a busy family life and a house to run and renovate, Instagram gives me a place to escape from that and do something just for me.

HISTORY
How they drained t Oliver Cromwell joined the protesters by preventing Thomas Treise from driving his cattle off Holme Fen. A crowd of commoners threatened Treise with sickles and pitchforks as Cromwell promised to hold the drainers to a 5-year lawsuit. In return for Cromwell’s support the commoners paid him a groat (a silver coin worth four old English pennies) for every cow they had grazing on common land June & Vernon Bull – local historians and authors Cromwell was at this time living in Ely farming the Cathedral tithes which were often in flood. Thus, he was not entirely against the drainage of the Fens. It was the enclosure system which forced peasants off their common land – giving them no rights to grazing cattle or cutting peat – that angered him most. Townspeople were as worried as country folk about the drainage, with Huntingdon, Cambridge, Peterborough, St Ives, St Neots, and Wisbech each petitioning Parliament to ask that their particular pieces of Fenland should be excluded from the general plan since they were not worth anything. In the early 17th century some 40-50 men gathered in Whelpmore Fen (near Littleport) to work on newly made ditches to divert the water to existing water ways. The reaction of some folk at Ely was to incite everyone to storm the jail and let out the prisoners. Ultimately, the Civil War put an end to the draining work. The Fenmen took advantage

of the situation by destroying the new ditches, banks and dams. Many of the protesters against drainage fought loyally for Cromwell in his New Model Army but when Cromwell became

Grief! thou art classed amongst the depressing passions. And true it is that thou humblest to the dust, but also thou exaltest to the clouds. Thou shakest us with ague, but also though steadiest like frost. Thou sickenest the heart, but also thou healest its infirmities. (Thomas de Quincey) Lord Protector, he actually promoted an Act to complete the drainage of the Fens! Given the lack of anyone more suitable, Cornelius Vermuyden was appointed Director of Works. He divided the Fenland into the north,
and fed it to larger channels which in turn fed two rivers. Sluices were constructed to regulate the flow of water. Vermuyden’s plan was deemed a good one but he had trouble with his labour force.

to swim up a channel leading from a mere. Wild birds, tempted by seed, followed the decoys into the channel to be trapped inside nets. Wagons of birds, sometimes so heavy that twelve horses were needed to draw each wagon, were taken twice weekly from
to finish the work. Finance was always short as Vermuyden died in poverty and the consortium lost all their capital. The new land was certainly fertile; more sheep could be grazed per acre; and more corn, barley and root crops were grown. Fish and wildfowl were still plentiful but not so easy to catch. Daniel Defoe (born Foe) was an English trader, writer (author of Robinson Crusoe), pamphleteer, traveller and spy who described how the Fenmen caught wildfowl using the new method of duckcoys or decoys – hence the name of the Old Decoy Farm on the edge of Whittlesea (Whittlesey) Mere. In fact, tame birds were trained
Peterborough to the London markets. Fish was sent to London live in barrels of water. When the wagon drivers stopped overnight at Inns, they would draw off the stale water and let in fresh water and air at the top. Defoe also wrote about the unhealthy Fenland climate, with its winter fogs that caused ague (malaria) which the Fenmen cured by drinking poppy-head tea or brandy. You can still see white poppies growing in some Fen gardens. The ague died out as the drainage plan succeeded – but not without leaving many addicts of opium and alcohol among the Fenland populations.

Cats are odd creatures. Like dogs they accompany us through our lives but unlike dogs they tend to remain distant members of our households. They observe us, looking on in a slightly aloof, condescending manner, always ready to remind us that we don’t actually own them. Imagine what their view of our lives and our daily discussions would be. Imagine they give us their views on life. In this novel David Michie does exactly that. What if the Dalai Lama’s cat wandered freely in and out of the rooms in his home? What would he hear within the walls of the house as the Dalai Lama entertains famous people and spiritual seekers from across the world? This delightful novel (which has spawned a trilogy) is a short read but is one that will stay with you. It is narrated by HHC (His Holiness’ Cat) and tells his life story from being a tiny kitten rescued from the streets of New Delhi, whisked away to His Holiness’ retreat in the Himalayas. He learns a lot from his new owner and sees life in a different way as a result. Described by some as a brief introduction to Buddhist philosophy, no matter what faith you are – or even if you have no faith – you will find words of wisdom in this meditative novel.

How to
STAY ON TRACK
this summer With the summer holidays upon us and families all over the country jetting off on well deserved holidays, it is very easy to allow your fitness and nutrition goals to fall by the wayside. Whether you are short on childcare this summer or indulging in an all inclusive break abroad, here are my top tips for staying on track:
Miss Motivator
STAY HYDRATED I can never stress enough the importance of staying hydrated. It is particularly easy to get dehydrated when the sun is shining and the cocktails are going down too easily or when working out in the heat. Generally, if you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated, so aim for around 2 litres of water each day and increase this depending on your activity levels. Drinking enough water is also linked to weight loss, increased energy levels and a slightly less killer hangover following the consumption of said cocktails!
EXERCISE IN THE MORNING If its forecast to be a hot day, you’re on holiday or your gym doesn’t have air con, aim to workout as early in the morning as possible. This means it will be much cooler, you’re more likely to be motivated as you won’t end up being as much of a sweaty mess, less likely to end up dehydrated and as a bonus, you will have released those feel good endorphins too…what a great way to start the day.
STAY ACTIVE WITH THE KIDS Many people site lack of childcare particularly over the summer as a reason for not finding the time to exercise. Rather than focussing on what you can’t do, focus on what you can do and get the kids involved too. Take a football, rackets or a frisbee down to the local park, head to the local trampoline park, go swimming or enjoy long walks at local nature reserves or places of interest. If you’re on holiday, many places run a free timetable of activities from water aerobics to volleyball that you can get involved in or have a gym and pool on site that you can make use of too.
DON’T OVEREAT We’ve all done it…eaten 3 courses for breakfast, lunch and dinner on holiday at that all inclusive buffet. I mean, is it really necessary to have chips, rice and pasta on the same plate? Would you do it at home? If you’re keen to watch your waistline whilst you’re away, then keeping an eye on your portions and making wise choices is a must. Stick with fish, lean cuts of meat and filling up on the salad bar and fruit over the cream and cheese laden offerings, fried food and pastries and indulgent desserts. Similarly, on days out, its all too easy to go for the burger and chips, washed down with a large coke, followed by an ice cream and sweets to snack on throughout the day. Pack your own picnic and snacks instead which will guarantee a saving not only on your hips but on your pockets too. Finally, remember, that life is for living, so even if you do gain a few pounds whilst enjoying your holiday or over indulge in a few too many barbecues and beers with family and friends, as long as you had fun doing it, it’s not the end of the world.

Park Farm Pumas pave the way to inclusive football Park Farm Pumas FC is a 100% not for profit voluntary football club that was founded in 2009 The club was formed to provide a safe environment for kids to have fun playing football with their friends while also learning valuable life skills such as teamwork, fair play, sportsmanship, respect and discipline. This inclusive & fun based vision outweighed any desire to be the best or win the most trophies and underpinned the clubs ethos that football is for all! It has been the key driver that has allowed the club grow to be one of the largest providers of football in Peterborough and surrounding areas. The club approaches its 10year anniversary and has decided to focus their sights on what the next 10 years holds for them. Ciaran McAuley, chairman of the Pumas told us: “The key items
in the strategy are to improve our facilities across the board through partner investment while consolidating and sustaining our youth teams from u6 – u18. We also wanted to create a new Adult men’s team and Veterans section, create new teams for girls only football and create new development squads for Inclusive / disabled football.” From this, there is already great success as there are new veterans' and adults’ sides. The club also works alongside Huntingdonshire & Cambridgeshire FA and Oak Activities. They have already started their Inclusive football sessions. The sessions are designed for children with disability or additional needs who may feel excluded from other formats of the game. So far,
it’s been a huge success, over 20 children are taking part. Sessions are currently free and run every Monday evening from 5.30-6.30pm. Plans for further progression include cerebral palsy football, blind football and football for
players with a variety of learning disability. Ciaran continued: “Clearly this doesn’t cover everything but the management team at Pumas are very keen not to close any doors on any new addition to our footballing formats.”
The club are actively looking for sponsorship and volunteers. Whether that’s coaching, groundsmen or admin, if you think you can help out, or are interested in getting involved in any of the teams please contact Ciaran McAuley on 07713 106898 or ciarso2000@yahoo.co.uk or via their website www.parkfarmpumas.co.uk
Sleep better, get fitter Protein powders, leg day, alternate workouts - these are all typical things to factor in to your fitness journey Catching some zzzs, however, may not seem the most important thing to factor into your routine. Yet, studies have shown the importance of sleep and the benefits for increasing your fitness. A good night’s sleep can promote the body to produce growth hormone. It also allows your muscles to repair and recover while building further energy. According to Sports Medicine, sleep won’t turn you in to the next sporting mega star, however, the less sleep you get the faster you will fatigue. So, it might be worth heading to bed that little bit earlier, or pushing your morning workout to a little bit later in the day!

Make Exercise a Real HIIT By Mark O’Keefe
Add some variety to your fitness regime When we think of the gym we usually picture ourselves jogging on a treadmill, or pounding a cross-trainer, non-stop for 45 minutes. Some people love it, and get a real buzz from a session, but if you're like me you'll count every single second as you wait for the torture to stop. What if you could get more health benefits by doing just half the exercise? When I heard this was a possibility at the gym I attend I couldn’t sign-up fast enough. Enter HIIT, High Intensity Interval Training (pronounced ‘hit’). HIIT involves short periods, 30 seconds or so, of high intensity exercise followed by equally short rest periods which you repeat for around 20 to 30 minutes. The idea is to work as hard as you possibly can during each work session, then catch your breath, then repeat. At the end of the whole work out you should be totally exhausted. At this point you might be thinking that the 45-minute gentle jog isn't sounding so bad after all, but HIIT has a number of real advantages. Each work period can be a different exercise. Some can be cardio; some can be strength exercises. This keeps the workout interesting (good if like me you are easily bored) and also gives you the twin benefits of improving fitness and building muscle.
Untitled-3 37
High intensity exercise burns more calories and more fat. Because you are working flat out your body needs to expend a lot more energy. It can't keep pace with your needs by simply burning easily accessible temporary carbohydrate stores, so it has to start burning fat. It also needs a lot more oxygen which is why you get out of breath. But this raises your body's metabolism to a much higher level than simply jogging. So, when you finish exercise your body stays in this high-energy state for much longer burning even more calories. Your whole body has to work a lot harder to keep up with the exercise, especially your heart. In fact HIIT strengthens your whole cardiovascular system. It's also very good at reducing insulin resistance (one of the precursors to type ll diabetes) which makes it much easier for your body to regulate your blood sugar, as well as helping to high blood pressure, the risk of heart disease, cancer, obesity and more. HIIT is easily tailored to any fitness level. If you pop to your local gym, you'll usually find beginner, intermediate and advanced level sessions. But if the gym really isn't your thing, it’s easy to do a HIIT work out at home. There are lots of apps and videos to help you out.
Spending just 20 minutes, three times a week on HIIT will kick your health drive into top gear, so why not give High Intensity Interval Training a try?

ANIMAL As the summer starts to swelter, you might want to take your furry friends out with you. However, you could come across an animal locked in a car and what do you do? Here’s some advice on where you legally stand.
What to do about animals left in hot cars According to the RSPCA, British residents could hold a criminal record if something happens to their dog while left along on a vehicle. While it’s not illegal to leave a pet unattended in a vehicle, if an animal becomes ill or dies as a result, you could be charged with animal cruelty. Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, this could mean drivers are jailed for six months and given an unlimited fine. However, what temperatures are safe to leave your animal inside a car? While many motorists believe that cracking the window
vehicle, a pay and display ticket may offer some information. Always call the police, and let them know what you intend to do. Before taking action yourself, keep a look out for someone returning to the car. Also, if it is near any shops, ask them to make an announcement of the car’s registration details. It’s important to take photos of the animal inside the car and name and contact details of any other witnesses. If you choose to forcibly access the car, you should be willing to defend the actions taken in court.
According to Ask The Police guidelines, on seeing a distressed animal trapped in a vehicle is to call the police. Though it is preferable not to gain access to the car by force, if the police aren’t able to attend, you may be entitled to take action. and parking in the shade is acceptable. Tallington Lodge Care Home From cafes to pubs, shops to spas, this may not be what you’d expect from a care home! Tallington Lodge Care Home has been an established part of the community in Tallington near Stamford for many years and has recently undergone a two-year project to extend and refurbish the home to luxury standards. The project has seen the partial demolition of the old building to make way for a new sympathetically designed two storey extension in keeping with the original Regency period rectory. Built from traditional stone, the home incorporates state of
the art design and functionality enabling staff to deliver the highest standards of personalised care in a beautiful setting. While the home has kept traditional features, the new areas of Tallington Lodge include some much more modern and unexpected aspects. Residents at the home can enjoy a drink in the themed pub, a coffee in the courtyard café, a spot of sun on the roof terrace and restaurant quality meals in the new lounge and dining areas. The home’s interior
décor draws on the local area for inspiration and has been designed with residents needs and comfort in mind. All bedrooms are en-suite and some on the ground-floor include patio style doors opening directly out onto their own outdoor seating area. As with the rest of the home, the spacious and secure garden is open to all residents and their guests, who can also make use of the ‘boat house’, a beautiful outdoor sitting area decorated with a nautical theme.
The facilities inside and out offer plenty of opportunities for activities for the residents at Tallington, from gardening to dancing, crafts, baking and regular trips out. When a resident comes into the Home staff take time to get to know them and their family, helping to gain an understanding of their history, likes and dislikes. This means the staff know personal preferences, enabling the provision of truly individual care in a way that is meaningful for each resident.
Less than 10 minutes from Stamford, Tallington Lodge Care Home welcomes visitors to have a look around. If you’d like to arrange a viewing or receive any more information please contact our dedicated Customer Relations Manager, Rabea Azad on 07834 790400 or email rabea.azad@countrycourtcare.com

Peterborough United teams up with dementia charity Peterborough United has ‘united against dementia’ announcing Alzheimer’s Society as this season’s charity of the Year Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer, with one person every three minutes developing the condition. Many of the clubs supporters, players and staff both past and present and the wider community will know someone affected, yet too many face the condition alone without adequate support. One family who knows all too well the devastating impact dementia has, is of former Posh defender Peter Hindley, or ‘Tank’ as he is known to the thousands of football fans who followed his career between 1960 and 1970. Peter, 75, is living with mixed dementia following a diagnosis 12 years ago. This particular form is often associated when there is more than one type of dementia detected at the same time – it is estimated to affect 10 per cent of people diagnosed. The most common combination is Alzheimer’s disease with vascular dementia.
His wife Sandra said: “Football clubs receive a great amount of attention and I’m sure this partnership will make meaningful differences. If only to help people understand more about dementia and the support available. “Peter has benefitted from attending the centre and I take part in the carers group, it’s nice to feel you are not alone and speak to others going through similar situations.” Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia charity, working tirelessly to challenge perceptions, fund research and improve and provide care and support. There are more than 1,900 people living with dementia in Peterborough. This partnership will help support the work Alzheimer’s Society is doing and highlight the various opportunities available for people to get involved.
Kevin Bowyer, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager in Peterborough, said: “As a life-long supporter of the club, I’m delighted they have chosen us as this season’s Charity of the Year. “The Dementia Resource Centre is here for anyone living with dementia, their family or carer. We provide a range of services and one-to-one advice. We also work towards helping to make Peterborough a more dementia friendly place to live, through the Dementia Friends and Dementia Friendly Community initiatives. “We are always in need of more volunteers to help us continue providing information in community settings, fundraise and to support services we deliver. "Unite against dementia now, call us for more information on 01733 893853 or email Peterborough@alzheimers.org.uk.” Bob Symns, Peterborough United Chief Executive, said: “The work undertaken at the Dementia Resource Centre here in Peterborough is outstanding, as well as being critical to the City’s well-being needs. Having had family and loved-ones affected by dementia, it is imperative that we are loud and proud about the truly magnificent support and care that is freely offered here to the people of Peterborough. “I must also make reference to the volunteers and carers who give their time and lives to help those in need. We stand together, ‘united against dementia’.”

With retirement, comes the promise of endless days of freedom and a break from the relentless routine of working commitments Carla Jones
Volunteers: working together to make a difference However the reality isn’t always the fantasy, and the endless days of freedom can quickly become long and lonely; the break from the routine of work can leave people feeling lost and without purpose. This is where volunteering can come in, giving retirees new direction, energy and purpose in life. One such place which survives on the goodwill of volunteers is Railworld Wildlife Haven. It was once a coal-storage yard for Peterborough Power Station bought by the Reverend Richard Paten for Railworld and the Nene Valley Railway in 1985.
Brian Pearce, now volunteer, founder and trustee, became involved and had the idea to create a wildlife haven on the derelict site; he was inspired by the wildlife havens created by Perkins Engines, the company

the city. Today the once derelict site is a hidden oasis of calm in the middle of the city, a natural habitat with over 200 species of fauna and flora. Everything there has been created through the hard work and dedication of a team of
volunteers, many of whom are retired and have found a new lease of life through their voluntary work. Some of the dedicated volunteers are ex-colleagues of Brian’s and have got involved to bring their skills and experiences to help out and make a difference. Like many of the volunteers, they found that retirement was not what they had expected and they
do to keep him busy. He designed from scratch the ‘Garden Model Railway’ from reclaimed and recycled materials, including old paving slabs from Cathedral Square in Peterborough. He loves the pleasure it brings to children who come to visit, as well as seeing it develop and grow over the years. “I come about three days a week, and it keeps me healthy and active too.” Another of the volunteers doesn’t live locally but still contributes in many different ways. One of his latest contributions is of a fully working model windmill which is now sits proudly as part of the Wildlife Haven. Others have found that volunteering has helped them back to work and health; being outdoors, gardening and working with nature can have powerful benefits for both physical and mental health. One

One of the volunteers explains how the Wildlife Haven gave him back a sense of purpose and he now loves having the time to give something back to the community. He spoke about how he missed the banter and work colleagues. “It’s great to be part of a team again and it gives us a sense of achievement.” Lots of the volunteers have an interest in the railways and the model railways, but others are passionate about the wildlife and doing what they can to be part of making our local community a better place. Another of the retired volunteers explained how he was feeling ‘a bit lost’ after retiring and decided to volunteer a couple of days a week. “I’m interested in the wildlife as well as the trains and it’s better than sitting on my own at home!” There are so many different voluntary jobs here and you can get involved with a range of skills, experience or just enthusiasm. Volunteering here can be about a passion for railways or helping to design and run the model railways. It can be about having a desire to create a natural environment for wildlife in the middle of the city, for wanting to do what we can to help future generations and for wanting to raise awareness of environmental issues impacting the lives of our children and grandchildren Whatever your reasons, motivations, skills or background, please get in touch if you would like to be involved. DIY divorce and the pitfalls Separated spouses are increasingly taking advantage of the on-line service provided by the Family Courts, which is not yet available nationwide, but will soon be coming to your area For a number of years spouses have also been able to download the forms for a DIY divorce and when the circumstances are straightforward, this can work successfully. It is always desirable to save on legal costs where possible and handling your own divorce proceedings can be a sensible way to achieve this. But if there is any legal complexity that you are unsure about, don’t plough on regardless and see if you can get it past the Family Court. It could end up with you having to pay extra court fees and taking twice as long if there is a technical hitch and paying for some legal advice in the early stages would have been worth it. It is also very important to understand the significance of applying for financial remedy provisions in the Petition. This does not mean you will be starting court proceedings for finances, but it could be vital for the future if such a step becomes unavoidable, that you have put down your marker at the early stages in your divorce petition. Divorce is hopefully a one-off experience for most people – make sure you get it right and invest in a family law specialist.

Lender acceptance of tax calculations and overviews HMRC have published an updated list of mortgage providers and lenders who accept a SA302 tax calculation and a tax year overview. Although the recent update is only minor - the Cambridge Building Society has been added to the list - this provides an opportunity to remind readers about this list and where to find it. Many mortgage providers and other lenders have agreed with HMRC that, as evidence of income the lenders will accept tax calculations and tax year overviews that taxpayers or agents have printed from commercial software or online tax accounts. The list relates to the documentation needed as evidence of income in a loan or mortgage application. This list can be found at https://bit.ly/2RQu3uE

LEGAL Company directors: Your pension needs you! Have you noticed that your corporation tax bill keeps getting bigger? But have you ever thought about how a pension can help? If we’re being honest, I’d guess probably not. But there are many ways in which your business could benefit from getting the most out of your pension. because they are keen to utilise their allowances when it comes to pensions contributions, but why? Well, to start with a well-timed personal pension contribution can help limit the amount of Income Tax you could be liable to – and the same can be said about Corporation Tax if you were to make an employer contribution through your company. How can a pension contribution help you pay less corporation tax I hear you say? Well an employer
pension contribution into a work place pension is treated as an ‘allowable business expense’ and can therefore be taken from any pre-tax profits your company may have. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Of course, there are limitations to this, but one thing is for sure, something as innocent as a pension contribution could benefit your business in ways you’d never have thought. TRAVEL FEATURE by Jamie Banks
DUBROVNIK If you are a Game of Thrones fan upset by the end of the series, then don’t worry, you can still visit some of the fantastic locations used to film the show One of these is the beautiful Croatian city of Dubrovnik, known better to Game of Thrones fans as King’s Landing. The late-medieval walled city area known as the Old Town is full of beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. It was used extensively to film the series and is in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. I was able to visit the city last month and it really is a stunning location. The streets of the old town are made from white marble
and at night the whole city seems to shine. There are numerous cafes, bars and restaurants scattered around the streets and you can find a great spot to sit and relax with a drink or eat a local dish. For fans of the show, you can take the Game of Thrones tour that will show you all the locations used in the series. Dubrovnik is great place for a weekend away or a day trip from a longer stay at some of the beach resorts along the Croatian coast. It is also a good base for excursions to see sights such as Kotor Bay in Montenegro or Mostar in Bosnia.
