This summer, we’re recruiting enthusiastic volunteers for our Help at Home programme. The families who receive support from us would often also benefit from practical support at home. For them, spending time together and making the most of every moment is much more important than doing the ironing or cutting the grass. And that’s where you come in. The families need volunteers ready to step into their homes and relieve some of the burden by taking on these household tasks! The Help at Home programme at
EACH is such a valuable part of the support service we offer. Charlotte Redmond, EACH Volunteer Coordinator, says: “I only started working at EACH a few weeks ago and already I’m seeing what an amazing effect the Help at Home programme can have on the lives of families. I’ve no doubt we should be expanding the programme to reach more families who need simple practical support to make their day-to-day lives that little bit easier.” The only thing you need to get involved is time to give.
You can get more information by contacting Charlotte at charlotte.redmond@each.org.uk or on 07889 251385. There are plenty of volunteering opportunities at EACH. You can visit the website www.each.org.uk to find out how you can support us.

Council worker returns from Ghana hospitals project A council worker has returned to Peterborough after helping hospitals and young people in Ghana - thanks to the generosity of local businesses and people Ernest Mensah-Sekyere, who is well-known as the senior beadle at Peterborough City Council Town Hall, has a continuing mission to help appreciative people from his home country by providing them with clothing, equipment and other items. The recipients included young pupils and teachers and staff and patients at the Afrancho Health Centre in Ashanti Region, who received donations of four wheelchairs. The hospital’s services had suffered for years with just one wheelchair, restricting the options for severely sick patients and expectant mothers to see their doctors. Ernest said: “I started this project because after many years in Europe, I thought about how to assist the youth in Ghana by giving them something to help themselves. “After sharing my ideas and dreams with a few friends,
I wanted to encourage the Ghanaian children in literacy and health by promoting sports and sending items like books and computers across to them. “The idea progressed after a discussion with the Unison branch officers who first supported me with jerseys. This was followed by support from the organisers of the Perkins Great Eastern Run (PGER) team who gave me race jerseys and football kits, for some schools in the Ashanti region. “Here in the UK, many things are thrown away, causing huge waste mountains which destroy the ecosystem of the environment – when they could be reused in Ghana or parts of Africa. “Last year before the death of my mum I had a terrible experience at the local hospital in Ghana, when my mother had to lie down on the floor in pain, due to a lack of beds and wheelchairs. I started a campaign on my return to the UK, and with the help of my
Ernest Mensah-Sekyere assisting staff and patients at the Afrancho Health Centre with wheelchairs. ward councillor, John Fox, I was connected to people who could help me transport used wheelchairs to Ghana.” Ernest thanked Councillor Fox, the team at PGER, UNISON Peterborough branch, founder and Chief Executive Officer of FOCUS (Search and Selection) Charles Walker at Baston Junior Football Club and the trustees of Buckles Solicitors. These all helped with various donations such as football kits, shirts and administration costs. Ernest added: “I have just began this mission, and people are getting the message slowly. I don’t think
it would be right to stop now, for there are people in the rural areas who can benefit a lot from the used medical equipment or the jerseys to motivate them into sporting activities to eliminate weakness and laziness. “I will be glad if many people can join me or support me to make this a big thing, as all help could be put to use. There are already existing well-known international charity organisations helping out, but not everything sent out reaches the poor people in my area, and that was one of my reasons for starting this project.”

Rooting out the rogue traders from the tried and tested professionals So, the milder weather is finally here, and your garden or home exterior could do with a spring clean of its own If the effects of winter have taken their toll on your garden, property or driveway, you may be thinking about calling in the experts to inject a little life back into the space at the rear or front of the house or the exterior itself. But whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’; any offer which appears too good to be true often is. Equally, be wary when it comes to leaflets dropping through your door; some may not be all they seem. We know that there are many genuine companies who deliver leaflets, but for the many legitimate ones; there are also fraudulent ones. If you have internet access, carry out as much research on the company as you can. Safe Local Trades is a supporter of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams

Safe Sound
&
By Sarah Davey
Don’t forget to protect your property while you’re away The summer holidays are just around the corner. We put a lot of effort into planning our perfect summer break, but we often don’t put quite as much effort into making sure that while we’re away relaxing our home is safe Most burglars are opportunists, who target empty homes. This means that the holiday season is bonanza time for them. However, a little preparation can save a lot of distress. 60 percent of burglars gain entrance through rear or side windows and doors so make securing these a priority. Fences and hedges are the first line of defence against uninvited guests so should act as an effective barrier, rather than just being attractive borders. The Metropolitan Police recommend ‘hostile plants’; plants that are spiky, prickly or very dense. Don’t let them grow too high though, your home should be visible from the street and to your neighbours. The idea
is not to provide a hiding place for intruders! Protect the entrance to your property too. If a gate isn’t practical, consider covering pathways with gravel. Thieves don’t like to announce their presence and the sound of footsteps on gravel is often enough to put them off entering. Motion-activated lighting and well-lit paths and driveways are also a good deterrent. Outside security lighting is cheap to set up, and low energy light bulbs keep running costs down. Also, consider installing a burglar alarm - as well as protecting your property, having an alarm can also lower your insurance premiums. While you’re away on holiday, some extra precautions will help protect your possessions. Keep valuables out of sight. If they can be seen, then someone might be tempted to try to steal them. Don’t close curtains in the daytime though, as this announces to the world that your house is empty. Invest in timer switches to turn lights
and the radio on and off. Cancel any milk or newspaper deliveries. Inform a couple of trusted neighbours that you will be away. Ask them to keep an eye on your property and offer to do the same for them while they are away. Little tasks like moving the post away from the door, and drawing your curtains in the evening will make it look as though someone is in. They could even park a car on your drive if you are taking yours away. Offer to do the same for them when they go on holiday. Join your Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, or if there isn’t a local scheme, set one up. Neighbourhood Watch has an excellent track record of deterring opportunistic thieves. A little vigilance and some common sense go a long way to protecting the things you love. Follow these simple steps and you will be able to relax on holiday knowing your home is as safe as it can be.

Hope the projects from the previous issues are keeping you all busy ...
with Kasthuri
Keeping with the upcycling theme, here is another project for you. You are going to use one more item which would normally find it’s way to our green bins in this project to create something unique. The paper from the old magazines are what you are going to use, a glossy paper is ideal but others can also be used. The technique is exactly the same as the previous projects, except that you use magazine paper instead of paper napkins and to make things easier the paper can be torn into random pieces before gluing and there is no need to paint the bottle either..... The required ingredients: Empty glass bottles PVA /decoupage glue Paper from old magazines ( torn into small pieces) Paint brush Clear varnish Method Clean the empty bottles and dry them thoroughly Then start gluing the magazine paper onto the bottle to cover the entire surface. Let it dry completely Apply another layer of PVA glue on the glued paper, this helps to seal the paper, let this dry completely Apply a layer of clear varnish That completes the project and you have a bespoke vase to display. You can finish the neck of the bottle with a twine or lace. Hope you have fun making them. If you have further interest look out for my workshop on decoupage or send me a message on 07894636760 to arrange for a 121 secession. GARDEN Potted Tomatoes Growing tomatoes in pots allows almost anyone with any size outdoor space with sufficient sunlight to grow this wonderful summer salad addition. You can put your tomato garden in spots that are just not feasible gardening plots most of the time. But there are a few concerns that are unique to growing tomatoes in pots that require a little more up-front planning. If you keep these in mind as you grow, you will be treated to a bumper crop.
Some key factors to successful growing in pots include:
The pot or container:
C&K
A standard clay pot that has a diameter of 12 inches or more is recommended for tomatoes. Your pot should be drained well, usually with drainage holes in the bottom. Good drainage is needed to avoid rot.
Building & Maintenance
The right tomato variety: Many types of tomato can be grown in a pot, but it’s important that the variety fits the growing environment you’ve created. Check the back of the packets for details.
Electrical work by qualified electricians Plumbing and heating
Where to get seedlings:
Garage conversions
The lazy man’s way to start the plants is just to buy them from the local home improvement store or nursery. One problem with buying at national chains is that they often do a poor job of selecting varieties that are suited for the local climate. If you can’t find a variety that you want, you may have to start seedlings yourself.
All work considered M: 07792689470 E: kevperkins87@yahoo.co.uk
Potting soil:
&
John Holland TREE, HEDGE GARDEN Services
When using a pot you can easily tailor the soil to your needs. The key starting point for good soil is lots of organic matter, which will improve drainage. Tomatoes are fairly heavy feeders, so plan on using some type of fertilizer, but make sure that it’s a tomato fertilizer, as it will have a slightly different formulation than a standard variety.
Putting tomatoes in the pot Start by filling the pot most of the way up with the potting soil mix. Put the tomato plant in the soil and fill to the top, covering the tomato plant stem up to the first set of true leaves, which will be deeper than it was planted before. Tomatoes can grow roots from the stem, so this will encourage a healthy root system. Water, and add soil to the top of the pot.
Staking tomato plants: Larger tomato plants will need to be staked. It’s good to put the stakes in place when you plant the tomatoes so that you won’t damage the root systems adding stakes later. Water your tomatoes at least weekly, take care to stake them if needed, fertilize as often as the label suggests, and enjoy your tomatoes.

Money Matters
by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants
Tax-free childcare Parents are advised to make sure they are aware of the taxfree childcare and how it could reduce their childcare costs Tax-Free Childcare is a government scheme available to working parents, including the self-employed, with children aged 0 to 11. Eligible parents can get up to £2,000 per child per year towards qualifying childcare. For clients with 2 children, it could mean a £4,000 saving per year on the family’s budget. Parents can use it on a wide range of registered childcare, including: childminders nurseries Circle breakfast clubs, after school clubs and holiday clubs. Circle Circle
For disabled children, the scheme is available up to the age of 16 with a maximum government contribution of £4,000 per child per year.
The scheme replaces childcare vouchers, which is now closed to new applicants. The government says that tax-free childcare is better than the old system as it is open to both employed and self-employed people, meaning about a million more families qualify for help. It is also paid per child rather than per parent, allowing loneparent households to get the same amount of support. However, the scheme has suffered from technical glitches - including last year when 22,000 payments were not passed onto childcare providers - and the help available has been criticised for adding to parent confusion.
To check your eligibility please visit childcarechoices.gov.uk to find out more information and how to apply. If you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdandco.ltd and if of general interest, we will publish them here.

When can your child demand
from parental snooping?
Earlier this summer the BBC reported on a survey that showed over 90% of teens had seen pornography online by the time they were 14 Well, firstly, let’s be honest. The fact that they have seen pornography by the age of 14 is nothing new. What IS new, and what concerns me the most as a parent, is the extremes of what they can now see. With the explosion of access to social media and the ease with which your son or daughter can communicate with friends, relatives and find information on the internet, at what age do you allow them privacy on their smart phones and other internet gadgetry? It’s not that society’s moral compass has degenerated but more that knowledge and access to information has become so easy that nothing is beyond reach and it seems few persuasions are now taboo. So how do you balance youthful inquisitiveness with common sense and awareness without making them too aware in your efforts to protect them? Personally, I think I got lucky. As a mother of two boys I felt ill-equipped to deal with budding ‘Man-Boy’ needs, so this was one responsibility I gladly handed over to my husband, who grew up in the Playboy and Fiesta magazine era, but
who has also seen (for research purposes only he assures me!) the explosion of pornography on the Internet. Our youngest is too young to have had ‘the talk’ yet but my eldest, now 15, has. The discussion was frank, embarrassing but without doubt, very necessary. During ‘the talk’ they discussed the fact that we know he will look and that whilst none of it is wrong if between consenting adults the important word is ADULT and that just because you can look doesn’t mean you are mentally mature enough to differentiate between real life relationships and those graphically displayed or glamourised online. They also talked about the fact that he could stumble across something that reasonable people would find just plain nasty but my son was assured that Dad was available to talk to if he ever had any concerns. On a separate occasion we have also had the conversation about sexting, about sending inappropriate, personal photos and how it could impact on his future.
Julia Harrison
However, my husband was clear on one thing. He told our eldest “Your phone is yours and I respect that but I pay the bill and at any time I can and WILL request your phone be handed over, unlocked, for me to check.” We made sure he understood that we would not be judging him on what he was looking at but would be checking just to reassure ourselves, and him, that he is safe. Thankfully, our son understands that and it’s been two years since he’s had a phone smart enough to let him look at all that adolescent shenanigans. In that time my husband has asked once to check it and yes they had a follow up discussion. I think because we set the ground rules for phone use early on, plus shown respect for his general privacy and have not abused it, I have few concerns about my son’s access to the internet. However as a mum of a teenage boy I do still worry and if you asked me how long will we have the arrangement with our son, I would tell you it will be until we believe he is old enough to know how to protect himself.

Foster
Make a difference to a rescue pet’s life
A passion for pets, willingness to learn and giving time to help Wood Green’s work describes best why fostering volunteers are the life-blood of this charitable organisation They play a vital role in the day-to-day support for pets in their care. Fostering is a great way to give rescue pets some extra love and respite while they are waiting for their forever home. At Wood Green, The Animals Charity they are committed to give rescue pets in their care the best attention and environment – but many feel much happier in a loving home. They are currently looking for foster placements for their dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals. The reasons these pets need fostering are usually stress related, though they sometimes also foster pets for medical reasons. They also look for midwife foster carers for pregnant cats and dogs.
The care and attention you can offer a foster pet will be so important to them. You will get the satisfaction of spending loving time with a pet, without the longterm commitment whilst Wood Green provides all the necessary equipment and supplies. As a fosterer, you can provide safe homes for dogs, cats and smalls pets in need of TLC, to help them recover from medical interventions such as an operation or from a stressful environment.
Wood Green, The Animals Charity Thus, you can help pets that may not have had the best start in life to find new homes whilst providing a caring and natural environment. Although every type of pet needs slightly different things, they are all looking for someone with a space in their home - whether a room, garden or a quiet area - and in their heart to make a difference to their lives. If you can offer some of your free time to provide loving care and presence, to update the centre carers and to bring the pet in for vet checks when needed, then they would like to hear from you. You will need a love and passion for pets and their wellbeing, to live within 40 minutes of their centre and the ability to transport the foster pet to and from the charity when needed.
If you would like to contribute to Wood Green dedicated care work as a fostering volunteer, please visit Wood Green website woodgreen.org.uk/how-to-help/foster

June & Vernon Bull – local historians and authors
Through the centuries Peterborough fireman have lived through traumatic experiences and even at the time of the great fires recorded in the mediaeval documents chronicled by Hugh Candidus (monk at Peterborough Abbey), firefighting was non-existent in any organised form – although the Romans and Egyptians had systems in place thousands of years ago

City Fire Brigade marching down Church Street 1913
Fires& Firefighting in Peterborough >> continued from previous page For Peterborough the first mention of firefighting equipment appears in the Town Bailiffs’ accounts of 1613, which mentions the purchase of 18 leather buckets from London to be hung in Peterborough Parish Church, St John the Baptist, Church Street. Repair of the buckets and payment to three poor men for helping at a fire is recorded in 1646. Later an Act of Parliament made payment compulsory. In 1667 insurance fire brigades came into being whereby each insurance company ran its own brigade in the larger cities, but in smaller communities like Peterborough, local men were paid to look after each insurance company’s interests. Each company would issue a fire mark with the company badge and the insurance number on the building. It was at this time that fire fighting equipment became a little more sophisticated and pumps were introduced -
each operated by 2 two men – but often they had to be filled with water from leather buckets! Fire hooks (long poles with a chain and hook at the end) were introduced and used to pull the thatch from houses close to the fire to stop the flames from spreading. A 1707 Act of Parliament compelled churchwardens to ensure that in their parishes stop cocks and fire cocks were fixed to all waterworks pipes, and a mark affixed to the front of any adjacent house to make their presence obvious. A notice had to be fixed in a prominent place giving a list of places where such cocks would be found. Each parish had to have a large engine and a hand engine and a leather pipe and socket to fit the plug or fire cock. Those churchwardens who neglected these duties could be fined £10. In the early 1980s evidence of these parish engine stations
could be found on church land at Alwalton, Eye and Werrington. In 1707 Peterborough had only 18 leather fire buckets. Messrs Merryweathers, fire engine manufacturers took an order for a manual fire engine for Peterborough in 1823 and another in 1855 to supplement existing rudimentary equipment. In 1835 a fire broke out in Westgate and the Milton Street area due to a cottage having faulty brick work in its chimney stack, which ignited the thatch. The fire spread rapidly to neighbouring properties and a total of 200 people were made homeless and two women died with property damage estimated at £3,000£10,000. The fire engines stored at Cumbergate fire station, located on the north side of St John the Baptist Church, Church Street (today the site where Miss Pear’s Alms house was built)

attended; along with engines from Thorney, Whittlesey, Eye and Milton Hall. In 1874 the Peterborough Improvement Commissioners were succeeded by the City Council to run the fire brigade and so The Peterborough Fire Engine Establishment was formed. On 8 May 1884 a fire took hold at the Infirmary in Priestgate (now the City Museum) where some 20 patients narrowly escaped from being burned alive. When the fire brigade arrived, it took 15 minutes to fit the hose to the pipe! The fire raged for two hours and thankfully the ground floor was saved intact – the rest was just a burnt-out shell. The way the fire brigade dealt with this fire showed up several weaknesses and on 10 June 1884 the Council held an inquiry into the brigade, its equipment, and function.
The inquiry resulted in recommending that three additional fire stations be set up – one at Millfield, one at the Corporation Yard in St John’s Street, and one at Fletton. Another group of Councillors led by Councillor Clifton decided to set up a volunteer fire brigade. The Council agreed to this and Mr Gill was appointed by the council as chief engineer and superintendent to both brigades. Peterborough’s first volunteer fire station (1884) was in Brooks’ Yard, Church Street, opposite St John the Baptist church. The two brigades worked well together when a fire broke out at the rear of the Greyhound Pub and Hotel in Market Place (now Cathedral Square), that same year. The City fire station remained in Cumbergate. In 1892 the council was urged to buy a steam fire engine.
Two large fires occurred in 1905 - one on 27 June at Moy’s railway-wagon works and the other on 16 October at the Baptist Chapel in Queen Street (the latter was reduced to rubble). In 1908 another steam fire engine was purchased. In 1912 the first mechanised fire engine was introduced when the volunteer fire brigade purchased a Model T Ford tender and in that same year went on to win the National Hose Cart Shield at Crystal Palace. In 1915 Captain J C Gill of the City brigade who helped set up the volunteer brigade in its infancy died on 29 July. At his funeral Peterborough City firemen and some Peterborough Volunteer firemen, plus notable dignitaries, paid tribute to his life and works by expressing the fact that he was a faithful and true servant to the City. Thursday 6 June - 7:30pm Oysters A new dark comedy by Neil Salvage, with live music Johannes Brahms is attending a party to celebrate the first performance of his Violin Concerto – but his genius is overshadowed by his selfdestructive ego. His friends are all there, but everyone is caught in a seething cauldron of passionate recriminations – and darkly hilarious outcomes. Everyone has their own agenda - the arthritic, embittered and ageing Clara Schumann from his past: jealous, unstable virtuoso Josef Joachim; pompous and waspish critic Hanslick - and gentle friend and disciple Von Herzogenberg. As the evening progresses and emotions turn on a sixpence, the play moves to its extraordinary conclusion fuelled by turbulent feelings and farcical misunderstandings. The Roses of Eyam, Stamford Shoestring Theatre Tues 4 – 8 June Stamford Shoestring Theatre Company brings The Great Plague to life in “epic” true story It’s not often that 40 actors and musicians take to the stage at Stamford Arts Centre. But this spectacle is exactly what director, Ken Walsh has created for his production of Don Taylor’s play The Roses of Eyam, which tells the true story of events in the Derbyshire village of Eyam when a box of clothes arrives from London in 1665 with unforeseen and disastrous consequences. The production has involved the company in painstaking researchincluding on location in the village itself- and study of the dialect & dances of the period. Talented folk musicians have researched the traditional music of the period, and will help to create the authentic atmosphere of 17th Century England. Even the costumes have mostly been sourced from Eyam, to ensure the cast look as much like their real-life namesakes as possible. Whilst ultimately a tragic story, the play also captures the joy and comedy of rural English village-life. With an outdoor performance as part of the Stamford Festival in the gardens of Stamford’s historic Browne’s Hospital on Sunday 23 June. Tickets for all the Stamford performances are available from the Stamford Arts Centre Box Office on 01780 763203, website www.stamfordartscentre.com. Sat 22 June 7.30pm The Beached Boys: The Beach Boys Tribute Show The Beached Boys were founded in 1999 from the remnants of a Beach Boys inspired band called Endless Summer. The idea to form a new band originated from a request from a television company for them to appear in a programme hosted by Ann Robinson based on American themes. The success of this appearance led them to rehearse a set of songs to take on the road. This was an instant success as bookings for shows and private functions. Their accurate harmonies and tight mix of two guitars, bass, drums and keyboard create the nostalgic feel of those fun days from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Listen in amazement as Dave, Paul, Kevin, George and John recreate the super summer sounds of Brian, Mike, Carl, Al and Dennis, who made up the inspirational and very different California group The Beach Boys. Hits like ‘Little Deuce Coup’, ‘I get Around’, ‘Surfin Safari’ and ‘Help Me Rhonda’ should get you yearning for the sun and surf. With their neatly trimmed harmonies, the Beached Boys magically capture the original sixties surfing sound of the Beach Boys. In the sixties, at the height of their original popularity, the Beach Boys propagated their own variant on The American Dream, painting a dazzling picture of beaches, parties and endless summers. Martin Carthy & John Kirkpatrick Pure English folk pedigree! For more than 50 years, BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, on both sides of the Atlantic.
Lexie Green is a songwriter, Farmer and self confessed proud Mum from the Fenlands in Cambridgeshire. Her influences are described as Vintage Blues, Americana & Country Rock ‘n’ Roll. Gaining a few tasty International song writing awards and multiple album releases over the last few years she performs around England with her collective band of friends ‘The Indigo Blue’. (Sam, Kat, John, Lee and Steve). Chosen by Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2 and the BBC Introducing team to perform on the BBC Introducing Stage, hosted by Bob Harris at The Long Road Festival 2018. Lexie has built up a strong reputation from her live performances. Recognised and respected by venue’s, radio presenters and audiences as a crowd loving and excellent ‘live’ artist.
John is one of the most prolific figures on the English folk scene, performing solo, in duos, acoustic groups and electric bands, and has established an enviable reputation as an instrumental virtuoso (melodeon, Anglo concertina and button accordion), as well as a leading interpreter of English folk music. And as featured artiste, band member, or session player, his music can be heard on over 200 different commercial recordings.

Ben Ottewell - Gomez As a singer and lead guitarist in rock band Gomez, Ben Ottewell is well known for his unmistakable voice and talent for blistering and inspired guitar solos. Ro...lling Stone declared, “Gomez’s not-so-secret weapon is Ben Ottewell.” And as GQ Magazine once wrote and anyone listening can attest, “[his] voice is not of this world.” Since his first solo release, Shapes & Shadows (2011), Ottewell has been pleasing audiences with a series of successful acoustic tours across the UK, US and Australia. Now with a newly-recorded album of songs for his second solo project, Rattlebag, the singer is set to return to the road, performing his new music as well as a few Gomez favorites. Simultaneously stripped-down and lush, Rattlebag is a collection of beautifully poetic tales of salvation and redemption, of sanctuary and braving rocky seas in search of distant shores. Ottewell’s infectious melodies and bluesy riffs will stick with you, and beg you to sing along. “There’s a time and place for us / I will take you there,” he sings ('Shoreline'). Ben Ottewell proffers hope and promise accompanied by sublime acoustic and slide guitars, and that’s something we can all use.

14 Jun - 8 Sep Graham Crowley, A Love of Many Things Free admission From this month until September, the art exhibition at Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery showcases work from Graham Crowley, an experienced painter whose career has spanned over 40 years, 10 of which saw him hold the post of Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy of Art and has evolved through many different styles. This exhibition ‘A Love of Many Things’ forms an effective ‘Greatest Hits’ of his past work which will give first time visitors to the gallery, or people previously unfamiliar with Graham’s work a perfect jumping on point to discover the work of a new artist in one place. The title, ‘A Love of Many Things’ refers to Graham Crowley’s multiple hobbies, interests and obsessions over the past 40 years, many of which have inspired his paintings. Alongside his practice of painting, Graham has had a compelling fascination with philately (stamp collecting), motorbikes and comics such as the Beano and Dandy to name but a few. These interests have very much inspired his artwork over the last 40 years and, with regards to philately and motorbikes, led to him being commissioned to provide artwork for a limited run of stamps commemorating ‘Great British Motorcycles’ for the Isle of Man in 2018. The artist says, however, “this is not a retrospective, so much as a collection of obsessions and passions. I am asking you, as the viewer, to imagine that you are looking at a group show by five or six painters who have all responded differently to their experience of the last 40 years.”

Alongside Graham’s many paintings, the exhibition will also include some of the subjects which inspired them, including a full size hand made classic custom motorcycle based on a 1937 OK Supreme.

Everything you need to know about chronic pain condition Fibromyalgia
Living with an invisible illness It affects seven times as many women as men, but is notoriously hard to diagnose. Fibromyalgia was, until fairly recently, relatively unheard of. However, fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is thought to affect one in every 25 people - and doctors admit that there’s still a lot to learn about the condition that’s notoriously hard to diagnose and treat. It hit the headlines when Desert Island Discs host, Kirsty Young, announced that she would be taking a break from her presenting duties for ‘a number of months’ because of the effects of FMS. Lady Gaga is another well-known sufferer, and the famously hard-worker even had to cancel her 2017 European tour because of “severe physical pain that has impacted her ability to perform”. Here’s what you need to know about the chronic pain condition that currently affects seven times as many women as men: What is Fibromyalgia? According to the NHS, FMS is “a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body”. Fibromyalgia is still poorly understood, despite the fact that it currently affects 5% of the British population. The NHS states that the condition can be triggered by “a physically or emotionally stressful event,” such as an injury, giving birth, having an operation or even the grieving process. What are the symptoms of Fibromyalgia? FMS is characterised by “chronic generalised aches and pain, extreme fatigue and interrupted sleep, it affects people mentally as patients become frustrated and have reactive anxieties and depression. Other symptoms include headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, poor concentration and memory and pins and needles in the hands and feet. Patients are sensitive to touch and something as simple as a hug from a child or stubbing a toe, feels far more painful than it would for others. What’s it like to live with Fibromyalgia? These symptoms certainly ring true for Samantha 48 who was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia when she was 39 after visiting
a consultant about her pain. She was forced to change her job because of the impact the condition had on her life. ‘I suffer from a number of illnesses including chronic fatigue and an autoimmune disease, but my fibro symptoms can be debilitating,” she told us.’
“I won’t let chronic illness stop me” Samantha copes with the pain by keeping positive. “I try to practice to be proud of myself for things that are probably easy for able-bodied people, but for me could be a big achievement, such as making it through the whole day at work without throwing up or blowing up.” Despite her daily struggles, Sarah is determined to raise awareness and help others: “I won’t let chronic illness stop me,” she said. What are the treatments for Fibromyalgia? Sadly, the condition still needs a lot more research in order to decide what the exact symptoms and causes are. However, there are ways to fight the pain. A Rheumatologist can help plan a graded exercise program via the physiotherapy unit and prescribes pain control and pain modulation medication.” Morgan Freeman, another famous face who suffers from the condition, has spoken about using CBD oil to ease the daily pain. Completely legal and readily available from pharmacies and high street stores in the UK. Hapi Hemp is a local CBD company that sells full spectrum CBD products nationally, they are also members of the CTA, the UK governing body for all UK retailers. Broadway Chiropractic are now also offering CBD Massages to their customers who are in pain. If you’re worried about any of the symptoms, book an appointment with your GP to discuss further - or if you know someone who’s suffering FibromyalgiaAction UK is a charity that offers information and support to people with fibromyalgia. For help or guidance, call the charity’s helpline on 0300 999 3333.

Miss Motivator I am super excited to be on board with this amazing magazine and be given the opportunity to have a platform in which to discuss, provide advice and generally ramble about all things mind, body and soul related, to local people. A little bit about me...I am a 34 year old single mother to my beautiful 6yr old daughter. I am a qualified Personal Trainer, Sports Massage Therapist, Freestyle Fitness Yoga Teacher and Reiki Master. In my spare time, I am a keen writer and poet and am also busy with the launch of my retreats business (more about this in July’s issue). A little bit of background...whilst I have always been fairly active, until the age of 28 I worked out purely so that I could consume my bodyweight in alcohol and kebabs at the weekends, whilst working for a busy international, commercial law firm in Manchester. Sound familiar? It was only following a difficult pregnancy, the birth of my daughter and a brush with death, that I decided to start taking my
TIPS Here are a couple of my top tips to help you on your way:
is going to be less efficient at burning fat, which in turn will hamper weight loss.
1. Drink at least 2-3 litres of water a day. Over half of the human body is made up of water, so it makes sense to keep ourselves hydrated just from a wellbeing perspective. On the weight loss front, thirst can often be mistaken for hunger, so try drinking a large glass of water and waiting 20 mins to see of you really are hungry for that piece of cake and if you are hungry, swap the cake for an apple. Drinking more water can also help to boost the metabolism, as well as reduce water retention and unsightly bloating by flushing toxins through the body quicker. Finally, if you are dehydrated, your body
2. Eat more single source foods. By this I mean food that doesn’t require an ingredients label because it is what it is...an apple, a chicken breast, rice etc. I’ve found that it is difficult to overeat on these types of foods and can also negate having to constantly count calories, syns and macros, once you get in to the swing of it. This doesn’t have to mean food is bland or boring, it just means making sensible swaps such as buying passata and making your own pasta sauce using onions, garlic, peppers etc rather than buying a jar of ready made pasta sauce containing unnecessary added sugar.

health, fitness and general overall wellbeing a bit more seriously and I haven’t looked back since. Over the coming months, I will be sharing lots of tips on with you on fitness, nutrition, wellbeing and lifestyle. So let’s get started... I thought I would start with the number one request I get from the majority of my clients, which is for help around the nutrition aspect of how to lose weight and drop body fat. Now I’ll be honest, I’m not personally a massive fan of judging yourself based on a number on a scale but the majority of people still want to use this as an indicator for how well (or not) their weight loss journey is going....

We're all so familiar with topping up the suncream on our skin to stop us turning into roasted tomatoes but have you thought about the harmful effects of UV rays on your hair? Here's a few tips to help you protect your hair over the summer months. When going for a swim, whether it's in the pool or the sea remember that both chlorine and sea salt are extremely damaging to your hair. Get rid of these nasty chemicals by shampooing afterwards with a clarifying shampoo. Follow up with a nourishing treatment and a good leave-in
conditioner. Try one with argan oils to help keep your hair hydrated. Avoid heated tools. Two hundred degrees of heat from these is only going to dry your hair out further. Why now try alternative styling options like plaits or knots? When using styling products, select one with UV protection in it. Staying hydrated is so crucial to healthy hair. Dehydration can cause hair to be weak, dry, brittle and more vulnerable to breakage. Happy holidays!

False eyelashes, both extensions and stick on, are all the rage this year. Why get up and apply mascara every morning when you can get extensions and look flawless every day?
Volume
Plump up the There are so many different types out there and there’s something to suit everyone. You can get false eyelash extensions in almost any salon in the UK now. Eyelash extensions cost a bit more than the ones that you stick on yourself, however they last a lot longer too, depending on how well you care for them. The two most common types of extensions are LVL (length, volume, lift) which are not actually extensions at all. The procedure includes tinting and perming your natural eyelashes to give them a fuller and longer effect. This method lasts between six and eight weeks if you take care of them properly. The procedure
takes 45 minutes to one hour and costs around £45 – prices may vary though. Russian Volume lashes were created by a Russian lady, who created extra fine and delicate ‘mink’ lashes. But not to worry, they’re completely synthetic. The procedure consists of adding up to six individual eyelashes on to your natural lashline, depending on how full you want them to look. The results last up to eight weeks if you take special care. The procedure can take up to two hours and can cost anywhere between £90 and £150, depending on where you go. If you don’t fancy the massive price tag of extensions or perms, try looking in your local
supermarket or drugstore and have a look for stick on eyelashes. If you’re new to applying stick on eyelashes, don’t get mad if you can’t do it straight away as it does take a bit of time and practice to prefect the technique – watching youtube tutorials can help you. The top brand for stick on eyelashes is Eyelure. You can find them in Tesco, Boots, Superdrug, Morrisons and many other shops. They have the largest variety of eyelashes on the market, ranging from natural to full on voluminous. The best thing about them is that they cost a mere £5.95 in most places and they’re reusable!
Summer Sunscreen Tips
Preparing for the sun? Make sure you know how to stay protected Don’t confuse ‘water resistant’ and ‘waterproof’ Some 95% of the sun creams we’ve tested over the past five years are claimed to be water resistant – but this doesn’t mean they’re waterproof.
Reapply regularly High is not necessarily best – It’s better to reapply factor 30 every couple of hours than to apply factor 70 once.
Don’t buy one that’s sticky or greasy
Choose broad spectrum
Some sun creams feel sticky or greasy and leave skin covered in a chalky white residue, which means you end up not using them or applying too little.
These sunscreens provide the maximum protection against the widest range of UV wavelengths.
Don’t skimp You need to apply a shot glass-sized amount of suntan lotion in the morning, then reapply every couple of hours. Skimping means you aren’t protected!
Use a high SPF moisturiser Every day, even in the winter! It really is the best thing you can do to protect your skin daily.

SENIOR CARING for
CARERS
Meet Tara Belcher, and you’ll also meet ‘Umbrage’, her mother’s beloved teddy bear. He was passed on to her as a child and now represents the eponymous name for the charity she founded in 2013 Local woman, Tara of Oundle, knows all too well the physical and emotional anguish a person feels when their loved ones suffer from a life limiting condition. She spent several years caring for both her parents who died from cancer 10 years apart. “People are proud and want to do everything they possibly can for a sick relative. I understand that feeling, but taking time out is vital to the carer’s wellbeing and I want to alleviate their pain by providing support in a way that is not about pity and advice but simply a space to rest and restore.” Tara acquired Kingham Cottage, an idyllic retreat to offer respite
for carers Kingham Cottage is set just outside Bath in the village of Coombe Downe, overlooking scenic views of Wiltshire and the Midford Valley. With exposed beans, a secluded patio, an inglenook fireplace housing a wood burner, a renovated Victorian stove and a roll top bath, visitors experience a luxurious home from home for up to four people. The space radiates peace and tranquillity whilst offering the buzz and historical sights of Bath only five minutes away. The Charity, After Umbrage, offers the accommodation free for up to four nights for anyone who looks after loved ones with a life limiting condition – cancer, downs syndrome,
rare diseases such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and caring for a disabled child who becomes an adult, for example. Each beneficiary is allowed up to three stays, including time for those recently bereaved. The charity hosted 29 families in 2018 and already over 40 are booked in this year. Applicants can download the short referral form from the website and must obtain a signature from their hospice, GP or authorised charity such as The Carers Trust verifying their caring role. Beneficiaries feel a boost to their wellbeing. Beneficiaries tell After Umbrage they felt a 56% improvement in their sense of wellbeing and a huge boost to their energy levels after a stay at Kingham Cottage, which is also let as a private holiday cottage through Classic Cottages. 100% of the income from private bookings goes towards covering the cost for carers’ visits. Fundraising covers the additional operating costs, upkeep of the cottage and four part time employees. Since the cottage doors opened to carers late 2015, over 100 carer families have visited After Umbrage builds its referral network across England
by connecting with hospices and other charities serving carers, just in different ways. They have strong links with the Carers Trust and are reaching out to council run serves under the Carers Partnership Board both in Cambridgeshire. As awareness grows and demand increases, they are seeking to expand their cottage portfolio by building relationships with like-minded holiday cottages owners across the country. Tara exudes passion for her work and has great energy for fundraising too, running the Edinburgh Marathon last year and hosting a Valentine Ball this year. Tara says, “I’m so grateful for everyone who supports our charity and fundraising events. With their help, to be able to lift the overwhelming pressure on carers, even for a short while, is so important.” Helping them raise awareness is very important to the sustained effort of After Umbrage. One easy way you help them achieve this is to sign up for their monthly electronic newsletter: http:// afterumbrage.org.uk/sign-up/. It’s a short communication but a powerful and quick way to share their work with your network to help spread the word.

VOLUNTEERING
it’s good for the soul! After years of anticipation, the reality of retirement can sometimes be a far place from the ideal expectations. The endless days which had been so longed for can become long, lonely and without purpose. Without having the structure of a working day and regular contact with colleagues, life can quickly become a void which can’t seem to be filled. This is where volunteering can help and for many people it plays a significant and valuable part of by Carla Jones their retired lives. There are many different kinds of volunteering which can suit any need, skillset or time commitment. There are schemes to befriend the elderly or isolated within a community; volunteers are needed to support vulnerable families or families with children in hospital. Hospitals employ a wealth of volunteers without which the NHS would collapse. Schools, particularly now with their funding crises, often use volunteers to help students with reading, maths or mentoring. Youth groups and charitable organisations are always on the lookout for volunteers, people without transport often rely on volunteers to drive them to appointments; charity shops rely on them to keep the shops open and the donations sorted. Community and environmental projects wouldn’t exist without the dedication of volunteers, knitters knit newborn hats for maternity wards, trees are planted…the list is endless. But as well as the benefits volunteers bring to those they help in the community, what are the
advantages for the volunteers themselves? Retired people are in an ideal position to use the experience and skills acquired in their working lives and apply it to their volunteering roles. As well as benefiting the communities they work with, the feelings that come from giving something back can be hugely beneficial for the mental health and wellbeing of the volunteers. It can reduce loneliness and have a positive impact on the daily lives of the retired volunteers, giving that sense of structure and worth which can be suddenly missing once the daily routine of work is gone. According to a 2018 report in The Guardian, “Volunteering has been acknowledged as part of the wider health policy, with the NHS five-year plan identifying a need to encourage community volunteering.” It is clearly an important factor in the mental health and welfare of communities and volunteers alike. There can be barriers though. Often a lack of confidence can come about when someone
gives up the security of the job they knew for so long; being the new kid is a scary prospect! Ill health or other physical concerns can also stop people wanting to commit. Depending on location, transport can be an issue, but often it can be down to just not knowing how to go about it or who to contact. So we know there’s a lot out there but we want to hear your stories. Are you an organisation who uses volunteers? Do you currently volunteer and want to share your story? Are you someone who is helped out by a volunteer? Please get in contact and we’ll start sharing your stories and celebrating the world of volunteering in retirement and how it keeps our communities ticking along. A volunteer I recently spoke to said that it had given him back a sense of purpose and it was ‘good for the soul.’ How has volunteering impacted your retired life? Let us know.

Happy holidays? It’s that time of year when families will be looking forward to getting away for a summer break and if you have children, you will no doubt have already booked your destination This piece is not designed to stir up trouble, but rather to provide a cautionary word of warning about potential pitfalls for separated parents with young children who are planning a holiday abroad. It is an often overlooked legal fact that, if you do not have a child arrangements order in force, which clearly the vast majority of separated parents do not, you should in theory always have the express consent of the other parent (if they share parental responsibility, which is usually the case) when you take your children out of the jurisdiction (namely England and Wales).
This is usually not an issue at all between reasonable parents, but occasionally one of the parents, if they are embroiled with the other over contact arrangements, will put their foot down and object to the foreign trip. If this does happen, the remedy is to obtain a specific issue order from the Family Court permitting you to take your children out of the country. A precaution against the other parent withdrawing consent at the last minute, is to have a document of written consent signed up well in advance of the foreign holiday, to produce on request to the authorities.
If you need further information about this issue, contact a family law specialist.
POWER OF ATTORNEY IS AS ESSENTIAL AS CAR INSURANCE . Some facts.. Why do you need a Power of Attorney? • More of us become unable to manage our affairs these days, without a Power of Attorney your family may need to go to Court. This can cause lots of hassle, delay and expense.
What happens if there is no Power of Attorney? • The courts may appoint someone to manage your financial affairs, without your consent. • Your friends or family may need to go to court to get authority to act on your behalf – this can be a lengthy, costly & upsetting experience. • Doctors could rule loved ones on decisions you have already made regarding health matters. • By setting up a Power of Attorney now, you make things easier for your loved ones in the future, whilst keeping control of your affairs now.
Why should you use Roc & Co Estate Planning? • We prepare thousands of Powers of Attorney each year in the UK, and make it easier for you. • We will prepare your Power of Attorney and we can register them for you as well. • Over 50% of clients are referred and go on to use us for other services. • We will come to you and explain in simple and understandable terms about Lasting Power of Attorneys.

The perils and pitfalls of
purchasing a property
The starting point is always the same… You have found the new house or investment property and it becomes ‘all you ever wanted’, ‘the house of your dreams’, ‘Where we can start a family’ or ‘this will be a good investment’ and so you plan and plot and scheme about the future and the shape that life will take. It feels good, you become excited and then you start to figure out your finances and decide to seek advice. I have given mortgage advice to many clients, I arrange the mortgage and advise you over the terms and costs involved. I understand that my
role from this point is in ‘delivering the dream’. I guess though this is where I am trying to make my point. My role is to act as your adviser and sometimes I wish that I was slightly more on board before the dreams of home owning and the thoughts of your future world become as entrenched as they do. There is a great deal more to be considered than the choice of new wallpaper or carpets and my role is to assist you in moving forward with a clear understanding of how your finances will
work. My guidance often involves helping you understand the many mortgage offers available, clarifying the costs of stamp duty or encouraging you to consider taxation implications that can fall heavily on buy to let landlords. So, when you are looking to follow your dream or make a property investment it is always sensible to know your options and the consequences involved in advance. There is a great deal that can be achieved simply by arranging a meeting with ourselves.

I’d like to talk this month about planning a funeral and the experiences that a couple of my clientsa have gone through recently to book free home visit My first client, Michael was quite distraught when I met him. His mother had just died, and he had just been to a planning meeting with a funeral director – ‘It was a nightmare Nick’ he said to me. ‘I sat down with a person I had never met before and she asked me a bunch of questions about Dad, and what he would have wanted.’
Michael and the Funeral director arrived at a plan, based on his best guess of what his Dad wanted, but his feeling was that it wasn’t really satisfactory. Michael’s experience was at complete odds with another client – Kate.
‘The conversation went something like this’ –
difference was that he had made a plan and paid for it in advance. I asked her if she had taken time to have the big conversation about the funeral with him before he died. ‘I didn’t need to she said, the funeral director had the plan and made everything that Dad wanted happen.’
Kate was in a similar situation. She had just lost her father. But the key
Kate was really happy that the day had gone well and the plan had

been exactly what her Dad had wanted. Planning a funeral is unpalatable, but it is necessary. As with most things we do it is something that we never quite get around to. Will & Probate Services can help. We can offer a wide range of Funeral Plans, from all major providers including the Co-op.
Me – ‘We never talked about it.’ FD – ‘ Lets start with the easier questions – Burial or Cremation’ Me – I really don’t know, cremation I guess.’ FD – ‘Did he want flowers at the funeral or would you want to make donations to his chosen charity?’ Me – ‘I don’t know’ FD – What about music?’ Me – I don’t know.’

‘You get the picture’ Michael said, at the time when we had just lost Dad this woman was making me aware of all the things we hadn’t spoken about, it was big important stuff that we had simply avoided.’
