VKK BYLAWS COMMITTEE REPORT At the annual General Body Meeting on December 1, 2012, the Bylaws Committee presented five proposals to enhance the VKK Constitution and Bylaws. All five proposals were approved by General Body. Updated Constitution and Bylaws document now available on the VKK Website includes the following amendments: Composition, Election Procedure and Roles & Responsibilities of the Advisory Board. Electing the VKK President one year ahead (called President-Elect) replacing the current practice of electing the President for the year immediately following the election. President-Elect will be an exofficio member of the Executive Committee for one year before taking over the President’s position. Clarification and enhancement to the roles and responsibilities of the Treasurer, Charitable Fund Committee, and Internal Audit Committee. Requiring the Executive Committee to take into consideration any guidelines approved by the General Body before increasing the annual membership dues. Members may also recall that during 2011, General Body approved ten proposals presented by the Bylaws committee. These proposals mostly enhanced the logistics of VKK operations including having a physical address as the principal place of the organization.

Fighting the Reflection? It was the final round of the Boys 13-17 Advanced Sparring Section of the Illinois Shotokan Karate Club tournament held on Sunday, February 10, 2013. All the participants had fought hard, but only two remained in the battle for the first place trophy. The judge looked up to see who the final two were and blinked in surprise. It seemed to be two of the same person! Was he seeing things? Nope, the judge was perfectly sane. The combatants for first place in sparring just happened to be fraternal twins, Eshwar and Chiranth Kishore, who looked pretty identical in matching karate gees and purple belts. As if it wasn’t bad enough that they looked alike, most of their moves were alike, too!
Eshwar & Chiranth at the Illinois Shotokan Karate Club Tournament
Some plays gave the vision of one person sparring his reflection. The judge struggled to figure out whom to award what point to, but the poor guy tried his best. That is, until one twin accidentally committed a penalty by knocking the other’s head back. The judge had no idea which twin it was! (it was Chiranth, but shhhh!) So, the penalty was annulled. Interestingly enough, it was also Chiranth who finally won the match, bringing home a 1st place trophy in sparring. He also won a 2nd place in Kata and a 3rd place in Kihon (Basics). Eshwar won a 1st place in Kihon (Basics), a 2nd place in Sparring, and a 3rd in Kata. It was truly a successful day for the twins and an entertaining one for everyone watching! All the same, our hearty congratulations to Eshwar and Chiranth.

YOUTH SECTION Go Wrestling Sachin Shiva, Clarendon Hills
A
bout a year ago, I was an anxious sixth grader as I walked through the ginormous Clarendon Hills middle school called CHMS doors. After a month or so, I started to get used to the “hang of things” and began a great life here at CHMS. My teachers were extraordinary and the school itself was phenomenal, too. In November, I started to become a more confident sixth grader, but a couple of weeks later my confidence stopped in its tracks. That’s the day in the gym, my gym teacher Mrs. Dronzek told our class a very frightening thing. Tomorrow was going to be wrestling day. When I came home that day, I was extremely worried and stressed out. Why you may ask, well I have several reasons for my phobia of wrestling. First and foremost, my brother tried wrestling at his high school and it didn’t go so well. My brother is not skinny, but rather tall and muscular and he seemed like a perfect match for wrestling. He was doing pretty well in this sport, but one day he was facing an opponent who was a little bigger and heavier than him. After a while though, the other boys got a little more aggressive and by accident twisted my brother’s whole nose out of place when trying to pin him down. My brother had to go to the hospital immediately has his nose was fractured and had shifted a lot to the left. It was a frightening surgery and he was very brave to go through with it. After that, he quit wrestling and joined track in which he had a lot more fun. As you can see, I don’t want this or a similar injury to happen to me during wrestling day. Another reason why I wouldn’t enjoy wrestling is because I was really small in sixth grade, so I probably will be hurt easily in wrestling. My final reason for not wanting to do wrestling is because it looks like a very nasty and violent sport. Once I watched it on TV and one guy was basically bashing the other with a chair. It was really violent
and scary. Tomorrow was going to be one drastic day. I woke up in the morning feeling very restless as I barely got any sleep the night before since I was worried about wrestling. I went through my usual school day and had some fun, but I just couldn’t get my mind off of wrestling. Finally it was time for gym, I changed him to my gym clothes and sat down with everyone else and looked up at a rather an average sized adult walking in. After some introductions, I understood he was the wrestling coach at Hinsdale Central, the high school my brother went to. No my heart started to beat even faster and I was asked nervous as ever. Then he started talking. His voice was calm and reassuring which made me to relax a little. He told us that he will be teaching us a couple of moves that are really simple, safe and fun. Then he told us that in wrestling you will only face people who are about your height and weight. He also explained that we’ll wrestling is not like on TV where they throw chairs at each other or beat each other up. After these calming explanations I felt very relaxed and it cured many of my doubts. I got to wrestle with Caleb my friend and I actually had a lot of fun. Even though he pinned me down a lot, it was a lot of fun working hard to pin down the other. I had a great time that day and this shows that you can have fun in things you thought you would never enjoy. That day I had and an epiphany. Wrestling is awesome! To sum it all up, I believe that even though some things might feel scary, you should try it because you might just end up liking it and having a lot of fun. Wrestling is a great sport for anybody and even though it can be frightening at times it is well worth to try it. I hope that if you are ever afraid to do something, you will find the courage to do it. GO WRESTLING!! *****

YOUTH SECTION
The One and Only – Sachin Shiva (Imitation of the poem People Liked Him) The small child was a one and only, Pledged to innocence and awesomeness. He was never alone, but he was sometimes lonely. The boy was liked by all; even the hungry lioness. His village home in the veldt allowed him to feel a sense of peace in the world, This small child proved to the world that perseverance is needed to achieve your life goals. He loved to sing and dance and in the moonlight he twirled and twirled, He was one cool kid, and it wasn’t because he made the principal’s honor roll. Never took out his anger on anyone, And he never felt the need to boast, lie, or cheat, The boy was never too blissful and by no means disheartened by the stress of everyone. He walked up to each and every saddened soul as cool as ice and with a marching beat, With that he said these famous words, “Don’t worry, enjoy life and joy will come infinitely.” He said it with a sincere heart going from place to place and warming hearts all over the Earth, Beauty was brought everywhere he went, just by loving and having simplicity. Though he was a small child, he helped the people he met by bringing fire to their hearth. Stood out from the normal crowd, Not because he was famous or a movie-star, But because he helped warm hearts and was never too proud. His love for all and rays of kindness he brought made him set a high bar, Yet he never worked purposely on raising that bar, instead planning on just working hard. The moment help was needed he would be there, As fast as lightning and never letting down his helpful guard, His gentle smile brought pleasurable heat to everyone’s heart making you feel like an heir. He always was working doing the share of the town’s work as every other man, Never playing the I-pad or watching TV but acting mature and having a virtue, He had a swag walk and personality not because he was totally popular or had an exotic tan, But because he had swag through his perseverance in life’s complexity and brought that to you. His simplicity, kindness, helpfulness, and work ethic were all admired by the town, Yet he was known for not that, But for keeping the town’s spirit up in times of need and being the town’s upside down frown. In these ways he would be able to bring cheerfulness to the hearts, even to a mean rat. Spreading his message of compassion will bring life’s complexity to simplicity, He grew old and died in his sick bed, The whole town aghast at how this loving man did not live for all of eternity. But his message of kindness shall always carry on even in the souls of the dead, Because compassion to all and having perseverance to your goals, Can only rid the evil that was brought forth on this Earth, And so we must thank this child since he will change the way the world rolls, Remembering him as a truthful kid with a pure heart that might change humanity’s birth. ***** ¥ÀÅl 20
