Australia is well recognised as the land of Surf, Sun and Sand However many would not know that in the 1830’s there was by-law which banned swimming during daylight hours. This may seem unthinkable to us today, however our forefathers felt otherwise. Thankfully public opinion claimed that it was immoral, and this by-law was overruled in early 1902. Australia’s passion for enjoying some of the best that the Australian landscape has to offer, subsequently created the need for Surf Lifesaving. The first Australian volunteer Surf Life Saving Clubs (SLSC) were formed in 1907 on Sydney beaches. They then rapidly popped up throughout Australian beaches. The Maroochy Surf Club is the oldest Surf Club on the Sunshine Coast, being incorporated in 1916. Many of the locals would have grown up with surf lifesaving as an integral part of their lives, however for those of you who are unaware of who Surf Lifesavers are and what they do, they are men and women who generously volunteer their time to provide supervision on our beaches throughout Australia. Currently, Surf Lifesaving in Queensland has over 8,500 active lifesavers who patrol the beach through community based volunteer clubs.

local surf clubs dining out® sat down with Martin Taylor, the operations manager of the Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club to find out a little more about this coastal club. Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club was founded in 1924. The origins of the Club can be traced back to group of young Woombye men in Mooloolaba SLSC, who were asked to assist in forming a Surf Club at Alexandra Headland. Volunteers then proceeded to contribute their weekends to build a 2.5 by 5-metre clubhouse at cost of 10 pounds. The clubhouse stands in the same position as the original. The next challenge was to buy lifesaving equipment. A reel and line was bought at a higher cost then the clubhouse costing 13 pounds. Significant contributions to Surf Lifesaving took place over the years, such as Alexandra Headland SLSC being the first Club in Australia to host a Surf Carnival for women in 1990. Further, the Club was the base for the first Helicopter Rescue Service on the Sunshine Coast and Alex was the host for the Radio Command Centre for all Lifesaving Clubs from Redcliffe to Rainbow Beach. Alexandra Headland continues to show initiative with the Club’s introduction of the Inflatable Rescue Boat pick up technique. Alex has also employed professional lifesaving staff, Community Education and Training is an adoption of a pro-active approach with a ‘prevention’ philosophy to beach and aquatic safety. The Supporters Club has two levels offering something for everyone. Upstairs is the Gaming room, Lookout Bistro and Bar area with spectacular views of the Beach. Downstairs is the newly created Bluff Bar and the Iconic beachside Kiosk. We also stopped off to have a delicious meal with Mal Wright, the General Manager of the Coolum Beach Surf Life Saving Club. Another long established club, which has been serving the local community and tourists visiting the Coolum Beach each year since 1919. Ever since that year Coolum Beach Surf Lifesaving Club has a very proud record of no loss of life between the red and yellow flags. It is a legacy of loyalty and faith in one another that continues to this day through the unpaid efforts of over 200 active Coolum lifesavers. In 2010, Coolum SLSC adopted the motto - ‘The Heart of Coolum Since 1919... Your Club For Life’ - So by supporting Coolum Surf Club and enjoying the best view on the Sunshine Coast you are helping keep Coolum Beach safe.
