With the season turning from fall and hurtling toward the holiday season, food is at the center of our lives. And let’s not forget football and tailgating! Whether you’re a Bulldogs fan or a Yellow Jackets fan, you’ll want to get your fill all through the season. (Watching the game away from home? The League Tavern, Sandtown Pub, and Black Bear Tavern have got you covered.) We kick off DiningOut Atlanta’s 24th issue with our own personal Top 40 of A-Town. From our best brunch offerings (and there are plenty) at spots like Big Sky Buckhead, REEL Seafood, and Sun In My Belly to the diverse ethnic offerings of eateries like Mulavi, Calle Latina, and Tabla, we have enough suggestions to keep you busy through the season. We’ve also included a section dedicated to those who love to cook and entertain at home, including tips on where to find the best in kitchen essentials and goodies to enjoy in your own backyard. Read up starting on page 14. Our cover feature this fall/winter is beloved seafood icon Wahoo! Grill in Decatur. From its humble inception, restaurateur Pam Ledbetter has been growing every step of the way, using her infectiously positive personality to garner communitywide enthusiasm for her project. Read all about it on page 10. As with every issue, our restaurant pages serve as your personal concierge to Atlanta. Whatever the season, they serve—collectively—as your hands-on guide on where to eat and drink both inside and outside the perimeter. We close out the issue with the inspiring story of Grace 1720, a beautiful space and inspiring contemporary American menu, all created with a leap of faith. Learn more on page 96. Finally, don’t overlook the 2018 Dining Passbook, available for pre-order this fall. This pocket guide offers two-for-one deals at more than 80 local restaurants, is now offering brunch deals, and makes the ideal holiday gift for the food lover in your life. To get yours, visit diningout.com/atlanta. With that, we encourage you to drink like there’s no tomorrow, Atlanta.

hen Pam Ledbetter was a college student, she wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to be when she grew up, so she got a stop-gap restaurant job waiting tables. In time, she worked positions from the front to the back of the house, when one day she paused and realized that her day-to-day work was more than just a job—it was a vocation. “I love the diversity of this industry,” says Ledbetter in a lilting drawl. “It encompasses so many things.” And it’s true—a successful restaurateur must have a skill set that ranges from fixing minor plumbing issues to pairing wine with food and ensuring diners are having a great experience. Ledbetter was a sure bet. For years, friends, family, and guests had told

interior, and salvaged chandeliers from a church in the Fourth Ward to grace the ceilings. Even the restaurant’s name begets her design enthusiasm. “I’m a joy-filled person, and ‘wahoo’ is something I say a lot as an expression of that joy,” says Ledbetter. “I felt the restaurant should be a representation of who I am.”
Made exclusively from the coveted Blue Weber agave piñas grown in the hills of Los Altos de Jalisco, Talero organic tequila is an ultra-premium tequila with a smooth, soft, and velvety taste profile. Grown at an altitude of 7,200 feet above sea level, Talero’s organically grown agave plants are carefully cultivated for six to 12 years before being harvested at peak maturity. The agave heart is then slow-roasted in a traditional oven, releasing the sugars that lead to the perfect tequila. Talero also doesn’t use commercial yeast, pesticides, or artificial growth accelerants, giving the tequila a quality superior to other tequilas on the market. And with blanco, reposado, and añejo versions, Talero offers a transcendent tequila experience for any experience or palate.
It wasn’t long before Ledbetter discovered that Decatur loved supporting its small businesses, and that Wahoo! Grill became the sort of place where locals eagerly gathered. “I wanted to create a space that was inviting to everyone, where dinner was the main event; where people could relax and enjoy good food and good company.” Without question, Wahoo! Grill is all of that and more—the type of place to bring a first date, meet up with your best girlfriends over wine and cheese, grab a burger and a beer with your best bro, even get married. Why? Well, part of it is the charm of the space. Beyond the rustic chic of the main dining room, there’s an enclosed all-season atrium surrounded by windows that leads to an expansive patio and garden space so lush visitors refer to it as The Secret Garden or Garden Paradise. But the menu is equally as enticing. Conceived as an homage to Ledbetter’s Southern upbringing, but with an elevated style, Wahoo’s menu takes Southern classics and gives them an updated and healthier slant. “Growing up, everyone kept a garden and ate seasonally,” she relates. “It was just the way people did things. It just seems like the right way to eat.” In that vein, Wahoo’s current chef, Scot Davis, maintains a menu of classics that are available year-round (like the Southern Fried Chicken) but others change seasonally. For example, scallops are always on the menu but their presentation changes every few months.
“I WANTED TO CREATE A SPACE THAT WAS INVITING TO EVERYONE, WHERE DINNER WAS THE MAIN EVENT; WHERE PEOPLE COULD RELAX AND ENJOY GOOD FOOD AND GOOD COMPANY.” The bar program is just as fun and engaging as the food, and is cooperatively produced by the entire bar staff. Though the spirits list is made up of many local, interesting, and small-batch spirits and boutique wines, the pricing is on point and no one takes themselves too seriously. “I just wanna introduce people to good wine,” 12

4 Welcome the new age of Indian dining in Atlanta at Amara Located in one of Atlanta’s oldest neighborhoods, AMARA is a hip, new, clubby eatery that is setting trends. With bright neon lights and Bollywoodmeets-techno tunes, this hotspot is as much restaurant as it is an entertainment destination. The Indian-inspired menu includes many tempting options, such as Brussels Sprouts with black chickpeas and jalapeños served atop a sweet potato purée, or the chef-recommended PK-Style Chicken Breast stuffed with seared, herbed artichokes and olives in a red wine sauce. Meals are eaten in the sunken dining area with an open kitchen as revelers in the street-level bar look out over the space with Kheera Derbys (gin with cucumber, mint, lime and ginger ale) in hand. 5 Oceanaire’s Chicken Fried Lobster The OCEANAIRE SEAFOOD ROOM’S passion for all things crustacean runs the gamut from extra meaty Crab Cakes to Lobster Tails dipped in Champagne-tarragon butter. They even goes so far as to batter said lobster and fry it for a new, indulgent dish called Chicken Fried Lobster. That’s right. It’s an entire lobster tail, breaded and deep-fried, like the South’s favorite chicken fried steak. This is not your typical Texas State Fair concoction, but an elevated take on traditional fish and chips. The fried lobster is drizzled with truffle honey and served with cheesy grits and hot sauce to add a sincerely Southern flair. THEOCEANAIRE. COM/LOCATIONS/ATLANTA

Classic fare at Truman Tavern Fusing a classic New York steakhouse with a casual tavern ambience, the owners of TRUMAN TAVERN want you to feel like family from the moment you walk through their doors. Truman offers traditional “pub grub” like the French Dip Sandwich piled with sliced roast beef, caramelized onions, and Gruyère on a toasted Cuban roll served with housemade au jus. But there are more creative dishes, too; the Truben, for example, is made with house-smoked brisket, kimchee, Gruyère, and Red Rooster Russian dressing sandwiched between slices of rustic sourdough. The tavern fusion fare will keep you coming back, but what seals the deal is excellent service, mouthwatering craft cocktails, and classic “warm the soul” dishes made from local ingredients. Mamma Mia! Authentic Italian pizzas bubble at Varuni Napoli
Authentic pizza perfection happens daily at VARUNI NAPOLI, the celebrated pizzeria with locations in Morningside and a recently opened location in the Krog Street Market. Naples (the birthplace of the dish) is also the hometown of Chef/Owner Luca Varuni, who grew up working in local pizzerias before coming stateside to work alongside his uncles living in New York City and Philadelphia. When he met the love of his life, he headed south to Atlanta to open his own pizzeria—but not before taking time to explore the culinary secrets of Italy’s many pizzerias.
38
Varuni's goal? To create the most authentic Neapolitan wood-fired pizza possible by understanding and perfecting every single step of the pizza-making process. On his travels, Varuni developed relationships with farmers and purveyors of the imported goods he uses in his pizza-making process to keep the flavors just as they are in Italy. The pizza dough, for example, is made simply using olive oil, “00” flour, water, yeast, and sea salt—like they do in Italy. The Garaguilo extra virgin olive oil they use comes from a small family farm in Sorrento; the family's olive trees line the gulf of Salerno and face Capri, the island of love. The bufala mozzarella, made from water buffalo milk, comes from a farm south of Naples, and is made without additives or preservatives. The very fine, low-gluten flour Varuni uses lends the wood-fired crust its fluffy quality, while the mother yeast for the dough gives the crust the same consistency and flavor every time. Varuni's simple yet intensely flavorful pizza sauce comes from the imported GustaRosso San Marzano tomatoes they use, grown in volcanic soil at the base of Mt. Vesuvius. The sea salt they use also happens to be used in the Vatican and consumed by the Pope. You can't get any more Italian than that. The pizzaioli (professional pizza makers) 36
ON HIS TRAVELS, VARUNI DEVELOPED RELATIONSHIPS WITH FARMERS AND PURVEYORS OF THE IMPORTED GOODS HE USES IN HIS PIZZAMAKING PROCESS TO KEEP THE FLAVORS JUST AS THEY ARE IN ITALY.
at Varuni Napoli pride themselves not just on making authentic-style pizzas, but on being true artisans. At the new Krog Street Market locale, the pizzas are a little smaller, made for eating either at the wraparound pizza bar (where diners can get a front row view of the pizza making action) or in the market's communal café area. On display in the kitchen is the oversized imported Stefano Ferraro wood-fired oven, where the pizzaioli manage some six to 10 pizzas all being cooked and finishing at different times. Though the menu at both restaurants relies on the tried-and-true red and white pizzas (like in house favorite Nonna Mia, topped in a thick homemade ragù, fresh bufala mozzarella, Pecorino-Romano, basil, and Nonna's meatballs), the latest addition to the menu is a Krog Street Market exclusive. The aptly named Krog Market Special is a fried half-moon calzone, filled with fior di latte mozzarella, bufala ricotta, roasted mushrooms, mixed pepperoni, basil, extra virgin olive oil, and Pecorino-Romano cheese. It’s enough to make anyone’s mouth water. Without question, Varuni Napoli is musttry destination, where the pursuit of pizza perfection goes beyond bubble and crust— it absorbs the entire culture of Italy. What is now the gem of Atlanta—Little Italia—began as a humble pizza spot envisioned by restaurateur Giovanni di Palma. Featured in countless magazines and newspapers, and recently lauded as one of the top pizzas restaurants in the country by “Best. Pizza. Ever.” on The Food Network, Antico Pizza is the very soul of Neapolitan pizza-making. Anchored by three wood-burning ovens—the only way to do Old World pizza right—Antico started a trend for fast-casual, but high-quality pizza stops. Inside, guests can cozy up to communal tables with a glass or two of wine and dig into a classic pie, like the Bianca with fior di latte, ricotta, bufala mozzarella, and pecorino; or one of the much-loved favorites like the San Gennaro with salsiccia, sweet red pepper, bufala mozzarella, and cipollini onions. If you’d rather, pick a piping hot, crispy calzone, also cooked up in the wood-burning ovens. Save room for Homemade Cannoli, though, made fresh daily, and be sure to plan out your next visit carefully—Antico makes pizza until the dough runs out.

Inside the crisp, white-swathed dining room, laughter and conversation buzz around a procession of tapas, pasta, fresh seafood, and succulent meats. Lunch crowds are wont to enjoy simple fare with an emphasis on ingredients—showcased in dishes like the Prosciutto Sandwich with fresh basil and mozzarella—while dinner nibbles like the classic Flash-Fried Calamari sail into entrées that whisk guests away to the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean (a sure-fire gateway meal is the Rack of Lamb with mint-citrus butter). bqe restaurant and lounge is located in the heart of downtown in one of Atlanta’s oldest and most historic districts, the Old Fourth Ward, on Edgewood Avenue. We are a hidden jewel amongst the old brick, glass, and industrial nature commonly associated with the local architecture. We, like many others in the area, are excited about the growth of the Old Fourth Ward and can appreciate the shared benefits of increased foot traffic, the Atlanta Streetcar, and the farm fresh produce provided by the Sweet Auburn Farmers Market. bqe restaurant and lounge is born from a mixture of northern influences and southern taste, values, and traditions. It is something that you will see on the faces of our employees and guests. People love being here; whether wrapped in the comfortable lounge seating, hanging at the bar for a conversation or two, or sitting around the community table with others that have come to sample the bqe’s vibe. Our menu has progressively changed over time in order to further satisfy the needs of our guests, both new and our coveted regulars. Working with our chef, we have made use of taste tests, surveys, and tasting events in order to compose a menu worthy of any palate while maintaining our original house recipes. Try our new Shrimp and Grits, Grilled Chicken Breast Sandwich, Southwestern Eggrolls, Smoked BBQ Wings, or our renowned Peach Cobbler. All of these new or modified items are put together with the overall satisfaction of the guest in mind. We are here to serve amazing chef prepared, soul food inspired dishes in a sophisticated, yetrelaxed environment. A New York edge with a southern accent. That’s the bqe way.

Welcome to Varuni Napoli—where each bite transports you to the beautiful streets of Naples.
From the familiar streets of Midtown Atlanta, Varuni Napoli transports diners to
another world and a different time—where family is paramount, food is ever-present, and the kitchen is the center of activity. Here, family recipes dominate the menu and seasonality dictates the dishes. If you’re craving a bit of true, Old World Napoli, begin your feast with some of Mamma Varuni’s meatballs, or share a plate of Eggplant Parmesan as you sip on a spicy Chianti. Chef and Owner Luca Varuni wants you to experience everything about Italian food culture, after all—from the first bite of a wood-fired Margherita pizza to laughter ringing ‘round the table. Guests should know that every diner is treated as a member of the Varuni family from the moment they walk in the door. The energetic and hospitable Varuni Napoli team keeps the atmosphere active, even treating guests twice a week to “Pop Up Pasta,” a surprise, complimentary serving of housemade pasta from the Varuni family cookbook. The daily menu and weekly pizza specials at Varuni Napoli feature only the finest ingredients. Expect to find a myriad of Italian imports such as San Marzano tomatoes, Italian olives, cold-pressed olive oil, doppio zero flour, and a wide variety of artisan cheeses and salumi, alongside fresh, locally sourced ingredients that blend Italian culture and Southern charm, much like Varuni himself. If you can’t make it in to enjoy a meal with the Varuni family, order online and savor a true Neapolitan pizza at home—made to order when you order, and not a minute before. In every way, for every meal, Luca and his staff want only the best for their guests. Or, as he puts it, “… to share the past, present and future of authentic Neapolitan cuisine with you.” Saluti! 78

It may seem strange to have a spot named BB’s Bronx Bagels on the outskirts of Atlanta, but it truly has found a home in Alpharetta. BB’s launched in 2007 as the brainchild of Owners Anna and Eddie Siino. Natives of New York, they found their hand-rolled, kettle-boiled bagels were extremely popular—so popular, in fact, that they decided to launch their own business. With these delicious bagels as the centerpiece of the menu, the Siinos created sandwiches that pay homage to

At the bar, spirited classics hold sway—like the alltime favorite Old Fashioned—alongside a dozen wines, and craft brews that marry brilliantly with Chef Boyd Rose’s kitchen creations, all of which hold true to the secret of simplicity. So settle into the woodrich dining room for some delicious, leisurely Southern hospitality, or sidle up to the bar for a drink and conversation. You want the best from-scratch barbecue in Atlanta. You want it in a relaxed and cozy setting. Welcome to Smokejack BBQ. Since 2004, this Alpharetta restaurant has been winning awards for its barbecue, and captivating the hearts of local diners. In a 180-year-old historic building, Smokejack charms with time-tested techniques. Based on the owner’s “barbecue tour” of the U.S., the menu spans traditions across the South, from Kansas City to Alabama. Start with an order of Fried Pickles served with spicy dipping sauce. If you like your “Q” served between bread, there are plenty of options, from the ultra-traditional Pulled Pork with Carolina barbecue sauce, to the new age “Tex Reubenstein” with brisket, Swiss, slaw, and Thousand Island. Smoked meats run the gamut from “Bama-style” chicken, to brisket, to burnt ends, and the kitchen smokes ribs twice daily. Having a party? Smokejack provides catering for all manner of occasions. Or, throw your party at Jack’s Attic, Smokejack’s upstairs private event space that can accommodate upwards of 80 with a full bar, flatscreens, and the world’s friendliest bartender.

A LEAP OF FAITH BY RE BECCA TREON
Grace 1720 began 13 years ago with what the owners of the restaurant describe as a leap of faith. Fittingly, they took their name from Matthew 17:20—“Truly I tell you if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” However daunting the opening of a new restaurant was, it was not impossible. Part of the reason for Grace 1720’s success is its vision of family; the family behind the restaurant truly embraces the idea of bringing both guests and staff into the restaurant as if they were kin, even honoring the tradition of staying closed on Sunday as a day of rest so staff can spend time with their families. Grace 1720 has an almost European feel to it, with high-beamed ceilings and expansive picture windows. White linens give the dining room a crisp feel, while the taupe-hued walls offer a warm cozy glow, accentuated by large
rustic clay vases filled with fresh flowers and elegant abstract paintings on the walls. Grace 1720’s interior manages to walk the fine line between elegant and casual, honing a warm and welcoming atmosphere that guests have called a home away from home. The patio is one of the nicest in the area (and has

been there since the beginning. He worked alongside the original chef, but took over Grace 1720’s kitchen two years ago. The restaurant serves contemporary American cuisine, so you’ll find elevated versions of classic salads like the Caesar and Cobb; seafood dishes like Crab Cakes; and a selection of standbys like the Berkshire Pork Chop, Pan-Roasted Chicken Breast, Angus Flatiron Steak, and the famed Shrimp and Logan Turnpike Grits. There are a variety of burgers, too, but what Grace 1720 is really known for is its Pumpkin Bread, served to each guest when they sit down. It’s gained such notoriety, in fact, that it’s now shipped all over the country to guests who want a taste of Grace at home. Whatever the occasion, Grace 1720 has always focused on one thing—treating guests like family. It is that faith in family, alongside keen attention to culinary comforts, that has delivered Atlanta’s one of most beloved institutions. Truly, they are moving mountains.
