FISHING AT ITS FINEST When you hop onboard your Lund and head to your favorite fishing hole on your favorite lake, your only thought is about the fish. As you push the throttle and power across the open water, you’re not thinking about how exactly your engine runs so smoothly, or how Lund’s IPS™ hull enhances performance. As you cut through chop and turn into a secluded cove, you’re not thinking about how Lund’s wider footprint prevents spray onboard or how its power strake design allows for ultimate boat control. You’re not thinking of these details because you don’t have to. Lund boats are built for fishermen, by fishermen. With more than 60 years of boat-building experience, the quality is undeniable. Our diligent team of craftsmen have been perfecting the Lund fishing boat from day one, adding elements year after year that improve your fishing experience—from the latest livewell technologies to increased storage, comfortable seating and wide-open casting decks. Lund perfects every detail on our legendary boats, so you can focus on reeling in more fish.
We are happy to have you in the Lund family and look forward to hearing from you. Share your experiences with us at www.facebook.com/lundboats. For more information on Lund’s boat models, and for tips, recipes and more, visit www.lundboats.com. Thank you for your continued support.

SMOOTH OPERATOR Sometimes you’re only as good as the boat you fish in. If you can’t maintain your position while fishing, your chances for hooking that monster fish decrease significantly. Thankfully, Lund boats have been meticulously engineered and constructed to deliver unmatched control that allows you to outperform the competition every time. At the core of it all is Lund’s exclusive IPS™ (Integrated Power Strake) and IPS™ 2 hull designs. The IPS systems utilize a pronounced center keel that helps maintain ultimate boat control. At the back of the hull, water hits a flat pad, which greatly reduces churn. The non-turbulent water creates less motor strain and, ultimately, delivers better performance. Wide reverse chines allow for precise cornering maneuvers and overall better control. They allow the boat to get on plane quicker and improve holeshot, as well. Finally, a wider footprint enhances onboard stability. IPS integrates all of these features into a cohesive system that provides anglers with better backtrolling, superior drift control and more sophisticated boat positioning. Simply put, Lund boats deliver a more precise, faster, higher, smoother and drier ride.
Lund Boats track like a train on rails, when trolling forward or backward, to maintain your desired position at any time.
2 | LUND
Additional strakes on the IPS 2 hull provide more control to enhance tracking ability and give you the competitive advantage.
Reverse chines add another dimension to boat control. They not only provide added stability, but also additional edges to cut water and stay on top of the fish.
Lund’s pronounced center keel works to eliminate cross drift, making it easy to stay in complete control and reduce battery and human fatigue.
Lund Boats are engineered to be center balanced. This keeps the hull working at maximum efficiency for ultimate tracking control, in all conditions. www.lundboats.com

FLOATS YOUR BOAT Many things set Lund boats apart from competitors, but none so much as the incredible stability and flotation ensured by Lund’s foaminjected hulls. Lund strategically inserts closed-cell foam (formulated to handle all marine conditions) into hull cavities. Lund fills each boat with enough foam to exceed Coast Guard and industry requirements, and performs tests on all vessels before they leave the production line to verify that they maintain equal and level flotation. Some boat companies do enough, but Lund believes in doing more. When it comes to safety, just “good enough” is never enough. To further prove its boats’ seaworthiness, Lund engineers put the “holey boat” to the test: After drilling 66 5-inch holes into the hull of a 1725 Explorer SS, the engineers took it for a spin—and stayed afloat and level the whole time. To watch a video of this neat feat, scan the Tag at right with your smartphone. Don’t have the app? Go to www.gettag.mobi.

CAPTAIN’S CREATURE COMFORTS 1900/1800 TYEE: COMMAND CONSOLE The redesigned 1900/1800 Tyee will amaze anglers with its fantastic set of features—for both fishing and comfort. The new command console offers distinct style and an ergonomic layout where everything is closer at hand.
1650 REBEL XL SS/SPORT: HELM The angler has everything at his disposal when at the helm of the 1650 Rebel XL. For starters, clear, easy-to-read gauges make it effortless to check fuel, tach and speed while underway. Helm toggles are right within reach, as is a spacious and protective cell phone holder.
A JOB WELL DONE Lund’s pioneering work with livewells keeps your catch healthier and less prone to stress
PROLONG PLUS
PROLONG
AERATED
The envy of the industry and the most technologically advanced system to ever hit the water, the ProLong Plus is designed with a freshwater pickup integrated into the bottom of the hull, where it forces a steady flow of water into the livewell while the boat is running.
This two-pump design keeps water fresher and fish calmer than any other in the industry. One pump fills and aerates the well from above the fish, while the other recirculates and injects fresh air via the Max-Air system for maximum oxygenation.
Lund’s high-quality aerated livewell features a single pump with a single-switch control. You also have the option of running the aerator pump continuously in manual mode, or intermittently in automatic mode when the model is equipped with a timer.

POWERFUL PARTNERS Lund prides itself in delivering the most rugged and dependable boats in the fishing industry, so it’s no surprise that Lund teams up with Mercury Marine to provide the solid and efficient power to get you there and back. Mercury is an industry leader in fourstroke and direct-injected two-stroke technology, and all of its engines run smoothly and responsively in any water conditions. Check out Mercury’s latest and greatest offerings here, and for more information, visit www.mercurymarine.com.
OPTIMAX PRO XS: TOURNAMENT TOUGH Mercury’s OptiMax Pro XS outboards deliver unprecedented speed and acceleration to help you get to where the fish are biting— fast! Several qualities make the Pro XS the best-selling tournament outboard in the world. For starters, its two-stage directinjection system and high-tech carbon fiber reeds make for incredibly quick response and outstanding performance. The Pro XS also boasts higher open-throttle rpm for remarkable acceleration.
SPITFIRE PROPELLER: AGGRESSIVE ACCELERATION Mercury’s FourStroke outboards have a new partner in crime: the Spitfire propeller. Four bold and uncompromising blades with high rake angles and extra cup give Mercury’s FourStrokes greater acceleration without compromising top speed.

HIGHER STANDARDS
NOTES
Every Lund boat is built to meet or exceed rigorous NMMA certification standards and Coast Guard regulations. But first, every Lund must pass the toughest test of all—our own standards for quality and craftsmanship.
Some photos of Lund boats in this catalog show factory and/or dealer installed options. Photographs are taken under controlled conditions. Colors are subject to printing limitations and are approximations only.
RESALE VALUE
Because Lund is dedicated to constant product improvements, the specifications, options, color selections and model availabilities of our boats are subject to change without notification.
When you buy a Lund boat, you become part of the Lund family and part of our tradition of excellence. When it comes time to sell your Lund boat, your investment in Lund quality will be rewarded.
Because we build the best boats on the water, we can afford to be selective with who sells them. When you see the Lund sign hanging in the window, you know the dealer inside meets Lund’s strict standards for customer satisfaction. Stop by any of our dealers, and you’ll see why they’ve earned the right to carry the Lund line.

“That’s the difference between a Lund glass and a competitor glass; if I want to fish for bass, panfish, salmon, muskie, backtroll, drift, I can do all that because of the sharp edges, deep keel and what’s incorporated into that hull.” -Marty Glorvigen, Lund Pro Staff member

HAVE FIBERGLASS, WILL FISH Everyone approaches his or her fishing game a little bit differently. You may prefer vertical jigging for crappie, while your buddy might choose to use planer boards for snagging walleye. Each way has its own perks, but neither approach is inferior. The same applies to your choice in a Lund boat. Lund’s extensive line of fiberglass GL models delivers the same unmatched quality as our aluminum boats, only in a slightly different package. Lund’s fiberglass boats provide a high, dry ride, while their sharp edges and deep keel deliver incredible performance and handling so you can stealthily stalk your prey in even the tightest corners of the water. Each GL model features an array of fishing features, premium comfort, and an open layout for excellent maneuverability and casting space. Not to be overlooked, the glistening exterior of a Lund fiberglass model makes a striking statement out on the water. Lund’s trademark quality is at the core of the fiberglass GL series, and the minute you step onboard, you’ll know you’re in the right place. Let your fishing game reach a new level with a Lund fiberglass GL.

It’s no secret that Lund brings unmatched experience, superior craftsmanship, and the best fishing features and layouts to the boat-building industry. At Lund, there is a great sense of pride to build upon the reputation and heritage that has been handed down throughout the years. Yes, building rugged boats has always been and will always be a key part of our legacy, but Lund also offers something more— something not every boat company can claim: a community of support. This support starts with listening closely to you, our loyal owners. We consistently look for ways to improve upon our existing models, or bring new models to fruition through your valuable feedback. Take the brand-new 1625 Fury XL, for example. This new addition to the Fury line is a featurerich fishing boat in a compact package. The Fury XL makes the most of its space, with more cockpit room, more seating and more storage, all for an affordable price. We’ve also added to the popular and versatile Crossover series. The new 1775 Crossover XS delivers all of the features anglers and watersports enthusiasts crave, in a slightly smaller package. Read more about both of these new crowd-pleasers in the catalog section. In addition to releasing new models, we’ve been busy fortifying the Lund community. We are excited to announce Lund’s first-ever owner’s club. Membership is free and gives you access to Lund news, tips from the pros, special offers and a product feedback section to share your greatest ideas with our engineers. Visit www.lundboats.com/owners/lundowners-club to sign up today. Lund is also proud to support a special community of boaters: veterans of the U.S. and Canadian militaries. In August, Lund helped sponsor the Wounded Warriors Weekend in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, providing a boat-trailer package as the ultimate raffle prize. The weekend was a huge success, and veterans were able to enjoy some muchdeserved downtime on Tobin Lake. Read more on page 16. Though large-scale events and tournaments are extremely rewarding, Lund strives to provide every angler with just as much excitement and fun on the weekend. Just ask René Breton, a Québec City-based science teacher who soaks up his summers onboard an 1825 Explorer Sport (page 10). Whether you’re having a quiet weekend to yourself or participating in a packed tournament, we hope our dedication and passion make your time on the water memorable. And if there’s anything you think we can improve upon, we welcome your feedback! Thanks for being a part of the Lund family. Dirk Hyde President, Lund Boats

Of Love and Lund Those who fish together stay together. Dustin Phillion and Shannon Olson love casting lines onboard Dustin’s 2011 Lund Rebel XL Sport. The couple fish the Ottawa River near the Fitzroy Harbour area, catching some quality time in addition to sizeable walleye, muskie and whatever else is biting. Even the duo’s vacations revolve around the water. They ventured to fishing hot spot Espanola, Ontario, last summer, where Dustin snapped this serene photo. Sounds like love at first bite.

GDY LU LEGENDARY LUND
Story by Roger Kamholz | Photos by Tony Kolker
Hole in Lund Lund proves its flotation, foam and safety are more than just stated lines in a brochure
YOUR LUND IS YOUR PRIDE AND JOY. You know it can stand up to some pretty harsh treatment on the water, but at the end of the day, you probably baby it just a little bit. Lund engineers, however, felt no such protective instinct when they put a 1725 Explorer SS through a downright cruel test. The test was one that no Lund owner would dare carry out on his or her own boat, but the engineers did it to prove a very important point—a point that literally drills home the fact that Lunds are built to withstand anything. Lund engineers knew that their boats are built to exceed U.S. Coast Guard and Transport Canada standards for seaworthiness and level flotation. They knew that every Lund model is tested and retested in a special water tank to confirm that it won’t sink, despite the harshest conditions you could imagine. They knew that, thanks to the closed-cell foam injected into its cavities, a Lund would stay afloat even with the drain plug pulled and the hull integrity severely compromised. They knew all this to be true; what they didn’t know was how to demonstrate it. But, being engineers, they eventually solved that problem, too. Using an industrial-strength power drill, a 5-inch-wide hole saw and a considerable amount of elbow grease, Lund engineers punched 66 holes through the hull of a production model 1725 Explorer SS—along the flanks, the underside, the transom, everywhere. What was once a completely watertight aluminum skin had been reduced to metallic Swiss cheese. Lund’s engineering manager, Paul Zarn, and compliance specialist, Chad Keskitalo, then took the boat down to the lake for a spin. Naturally. Nothing stopped the boat from taking on a little water, but the remarkable buoyancy of the injected foam kept the Lund stable, level and afloat. “It’s a two-part closed-cell foam,” Chad notes. “It weighs just two pounds per cubic foot.” The Explorer could still get up on plane, and with the boat at rest, the passengers shifted from one side of the boat to the other, inviting the vessel to tip, but to no avail. They walked away with soggy socks, but that’s about it. The demonstration was a resounding success.
4 | LUND
The “holey boat”—as it’s come to be known around Lund headquarters in New York Mills, Minnesota—is a testament to the lengths the company goes to ensure its boats are beyond safe. Among a barrage of validation tests each Lund model undergoes, the flotation tank test is one of the most important. Prototypes are unplugged, weighted with lead, “swamped” with hose water and left to soak for several hours. For a design to pass, it must not sink or tip past a given angle under this duress. No wonder Chad, who administers Lund’s validation tests and certifies all its boats, had no doubts that the Explorer would remain seaworthy—whether with one hole or more than 60. “We level-float everything that we build,” Chad says. “There is a lot of buoyancy in them.” Granted, Coast Guard flotation standards for outboard boats 20 feet in length or less are very strict, and all manufacturers of such vessels must meet these standards. But how many can claim that their outboard vessels longer than 20 feet meet the same standards? Lund can. Even though the flotation standards demanded of these models are less rigorous, Lund still designs its larger boats to meet and exceed the rules applied to smaller craft. “We take the highest level of standards and apply it to all our boats,” notes Lund product manager Rory Wiebe. “They are just plain safe.”

EXPT GRS EXPERT ANGLERS Story by Jennifer Chesak

Gussy Up Pro Angler Jeff Gustafson has relied on his Lund as a professional fisherman, guide and TV host
PRO STAFFER AND CANADIAN TELEVISION PERSONALITY JEFF GUSTAFSON (aka “Gussy”) says he was born and raised in “Lund country,” in Ontario’s Lake of the Woods region. Lund has been a regular part of his life, and it has gone hand in hand with his fishing and hunting guide business. So, when the opportunity arose to compete in the Walmart FLW Bass Tour, there was only one boat choice: a Lund 2010 Predator. The FLW Bass Tour takes place on seven different southern U.S. lakes—not typically “home” waters for a Lund boat or a Canadian angler—but Gussy wouldn’t dream of trading his sturdy aluminum 2010 Predator for one of the fiberglass bass boat brands popular in the South. “I hope for rougher water, which my Lund is perfectly designed for; it’s where other bass boats struggle,” he says. The 2010 Predator is one of only two aluminum boats on the circuit, and it’s grabbed the eye of many other pro anglers. “The boat stands out,” Gussy says. “Last year in Texas, Rick Clunn pulled up to me and said, ‘I like your boat. Good luck.’ It totally made my day. He’s one of the most famous bass anglers of all time.” Gussy’s gushing comes from a lifelong passion for fishing. He first entered the competitive fishing world at the Kenora Bass International tournament when he was just 10 years old. “That was my Christmas present from my parents,” he says. “I have had the bug ever since.” He then went on to win the KBI at 17. “This opened a lot doors because I had some credibility with sponsors and other anglers,” he says. “It was important in helping me move towards making my living in the fishing industry.” Gussy’s professional fishing career started at age 14 as a guide at various lodges and camps. “Over the years, I've had the opportunity to run every brand of boat,” he says, “and
6 | LUND
consistently Lund outperforms the rest in its ability to take a beating and in all the great little features that they come with.” Today, he remains loyal to the brand, spending an average of 200 to 250 days on the water while running his own guide service on Lake of the Woods. “The boat has huge bow and aft decks that offer a lot of room to fish,” he says, “and it is simply amazing when it comes to storage.” The Predator’s layout keeps Gussy organized so he can focus on providing his customers with the best experience possible, whether they are out for walleye, pike, muskie, bass or trout. “The beauty of the boat, for me, is that it’s really multi-species,” he says. He admits that bass fishing remains his favorite, though. “The simplest tip I can give,” he says, “is that bass are generally pretty active. Keep moving until you find biting fish. Don’t just camp out.” In addition to operating a fishing guide service—ice fishing included—Gussy guides wolf hunts and takes customers out to look for shed antlers. Using a Lund 2000 Alaskan Tiller, he also outfits deer-hunting excursions to locations best accessed by water. And, of course, he always makes time as a Lund Pro Staff member to hit the tournament circuit. He’s racked up an impressive resume, with wins at the Kenora Bass International (2008), International Falls Bass Championship (2010 and 2011) and the Shoal Lake Bass Classic (2009). Remembering the opportunity his parents afforded him at a young age, Gussy has paid his success forward, donating nearly two weeks out of the year to various charities that help get people out on the water, especially kids. Folks can advance their own fishing techniques by tuning in to “Fishing with Gussy,” which airs as a segment on Points North on Ontario’s CJBN TV.

“Everything is easy access,” says René, the owner of a 2010 Lund 1825 Explorer Sport. He can either fish for walleye and pike in the heart of Québec City on the Fleuve Saint-Laurent (St. Lawrence River), trailer to Lac des Deux Montagnes (Lake of Two Mountains) for muskie, head out onto the Gulf of St. Lawrence for cod or herring, or fly fish for brook trout on one of the province’s many small rivers and streams. After nearing the Pont de Québec (Québec Bridge), René slows the Lund to an easy troll for targeting walleye. “I troll a lot,” he explains. “For walleye, jigging is also a good method on the river, but I like to try as many methods as possible to fit the conditions I must deal with.” On a summer day—with school not in session—René, a physics and science teacher, usually opts for the convenience of the St. Lawrence.
“Lund’s reputation is unmatched. I did a lot of research before buying. This is my first Lund, but I’m sure it won’t be my last.”
———— He can get out on the water quickly in the morning and then return to enjoy family time in the afternoon. And while working the river’s various hotspots, he can also admire the metropolitan view. The town earned its name from the Algonquin word Kébec, which means, “where the river narrows.” And from the water, one can see the city’s most prominent architectural masterpiece, Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, which opened in 1893. The hotel’s castle-like towers and turrets give the impression of going back to medieval times. In sharp contrast to the old-world charm, the
graph on René’s Lund displays numerous prospects. “Let’s face it, it,” René says, “it’s fun to feel like a kid with all the electronics you can use on the boat these days.” Having owned his Lund for only two months, the new-toy mentality hasn’t worn off yet. “Before,” he says, “I was fishing on a friend’s bass boat or on my old row boat.” Buying a Lund proved one of René’s easiest decisions. “Lund’s reputation is unmatched,” he says. “I did a lot of research before buying. I went to every blog and discussion board I could. I went to all the websites that compared my boat with others. The dealership answered all my questions

and a little bit more,” he adds of Adrenaline Sports in Québec City. “It’s my first Lund, but I’m sure it won’t be my last.” Whitecaps slosh at the hull of the Explorer Sport, but the sturdy aluminum vessel handles the onslaught of waves with ease. René never hesitates to let his family join him out on the water, knowing that Lund boats feature superior construction with superior materials. “On the St. Law rence River, the water conditions aren’t always good,” René explains. “With its stability and toughness, my Lund gives me all the confidence I need to feel safe in all conditions. Last year I had to deal with big waves and a lot of wind with my two kids and my wife onboard. Never once did I doubt that I’d get them home safe.” The deep-V hull acts like a fortress protecting those inside, notes René, as he points out actual ancient strongholds that mark the shoreline. Vieux-Québec (Old Québec City) was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. Its ramparts enclose the only fortified city in North America north of Mexico. Its walls and four gates hold architecture that dates back to the late 1600s, including Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica
Cathedral, the oldest stone church in North America, built in 1688. Perched on the top of Cap Diamant (Cape Diamond), forged by the convergence of the St. Lawrence and St. Charles rivers, Old Quebec offers panoramic views of the surrounding waterways and the Quartier-Petit Champlain (the lower town). As the founding site of New France, the bluff and its fortress served as protection during countless invasions until British occupation in 1759. Not until 1867 did New France become part of Canada. After providing a quick history lesson, René maneuvers the Lund downstream near the maple-lined shore of Île d’Orléans (Island of Orleans). In winter, folks like to tap the sugar maple stands there for syrup with which to douse their crêpes. Locals call the island the “garden of Québec” in reference to its vineyards, orchards and strawberry fields. “The landscape of Québec is amazing,” René says. “It’s a nice combination between nature and city.” “I started fishing a little more than 20 years ago,” René continues. “When I started, I was mostly interested in the relaxation and camaraderie associated with catching brook trout.” The
scientist within him soon took charge when René discovered the challenge of pursuing the smart and feisty muskellunge. “You’ve got to take a scientific approach in order to trick the selected target—and that fits perfectly for me,” René says. “It’s also the best way to free my mind.” René chose Lund’s Explorer Sport because its layout keeps him organized and ready. “The boat is designed exactly to fit all my needs,” he says. “It has the right interior design for fishing, and the deck is perfect for casting. The livewells are the right size for fish, and are easy to reach.” Heading downstream a short distance, Chute Montmorency (Montmorency Falls) comes into view. The falls dump the contents of the Montmorency River over a cliff side and into the St. Lawrence. Visitors can take a walk over a suspension bridge or hike up a steep staircase, but the immense rush of water is just as bre athtaking when observed from a boat. The site is a great spot for taking the family, René adds. “I try to bring friends and family out whenever possible,” he says. “It’s fun to watch them discover the fishing quality of the river. Most people of the region don’t know we have such a great playground in our backyard.” Luckily, the Explorer Sport affords René and company plenty of room for fishing and relaxing. “The space on the boat is really noticeable,” he says. “All the storage for my fishing and family stuff is ideal. Also, I wanted a fishing boat that is comfortable for those who don’t usually fish.” Who to take? Where to go? What to catch? All tough selections. But there’s one choice that’s forever a non-decision. “Every time I go on my Lund,” René says, “even if it’s just for hanging

MOST SUMMER MORNINGS, WHEN THE SUN RISES
over the trees along saskatchewan’s tobin lake, you’ll find blake emmons quietly casting a line, shooting ripples across the glassy surface as he sits in contemplative serenity. he says tobin lake has the best walleye fishing in the world. he says he knows a spot where they’re always biting. he says he’ll never tell me where that is.
—————— blake has spent the majority of his summers on this lake, and he fondly recalls the times he’s spent making memories with friends, family and, perhaps more importantly, fish. last memorial day, blake was fishing his favorite spot with an old military buddy when the conversation turned to the men they knew from the service. “we know a lot of guys who were injured, both physically and mentally, and we wanted to do something to show that we care,” blake says. the two men talked about inviting a few wounded veterans to nipawin, saskatchewan, for a weekend of carefree camaraderie and a chance to experience world-class fishing on the saskatchewan river and tobin lake. “we had no idea it was going to turn into such a big event,” blake says. “after word got out about the weekend, we kept hearing from vets who wanted to get involved. how could we say no?” after teaming up with wounded warriors, an organization with american and canadian branches that offers support for wounded veterans, blake and his team helped organize the wounded warriors weekend in august 2012, giving 112 american and

canadian veterans an opportunity to get out on the water and have some fun. the wounded warriors team knew they needed more support to make this event a complete success, so blake reached out to lund about sponsorship. “i’ve always been a fan of lund boats,” blake says. “since much of the weekend centered on fishing, they were the first group i thought to contact. i didn’t expect that they would take such an interest in the event.” lund donated a wd-14 boat with shoreland’r trailer, and mercury marine added a 9.9-hp engine for the event. for every 10 dollars donated, participants received a raffle ticket for a chance to win the boat-trailer package. “we called the fishing portion of the weekend ‘the lund fishing challenge,’” blake says. “it was a challenge, not a tournament. it wasn’t about winning. it was about having fun.” Joe rustenburg, a canadian veteran living with post-traumatic stress disorder, and his wife, melanie, found out about the weekend through facebook. initially, melanie didn’t think about attending the event as a guest. she wanted to volunteer. “i read about it, and i was immediately hooked,” melanie says. “the weekend sounded like such a great idea, and i wanted to help in any way i could.” after offering to volunteer, melanie was encouraged to participate in the event with her husband. “i can’t explain how much it meant to me to see Joe feeling comfortable and relaxed—to see the real Joe just having fun and being himself,” melanie says. Joe took up fishing in 2009 after returning from his second tour of duty in afghanistan. “it has a peaceful, calming effect on me,” Joe says.

— “Getting out on a boat and casting a line into the water really helps me feel peace.” As a lifelong fishing enthusiast, Melanie was thrilled when Joe turned to fishing as a means of therapy. “He never really fished before, but he loves it now,” she says. “When we’re fishing, everything is okay. All of our problems go away, and we can just relax and have fun with each other.” Justin Bednar, an American Army veteran, participated in the event after the American branch of Wounded Warriors reached out to him. “When they called me and told me about the weekend, I immediately wanted to participate,” Justin says. Justin, who’s fished his whole life, was excited about the opportunity to fish with a group of people going through similar circumstances. “I’ve always enjoyed fishing,” he says. “Now, more than ever, I can see the therapeutic effect it has on me. When I’m on the water, I can forget about everything and just fish.” After sustaining combat wounds in April 2007, Justin found himself in the same position
as most of the vets who participated in the weekend. “You get out of war and you think, ‘This is it. How am I going to adjust to this new life?’” he says. “It’s easy to get depressed, and I think a lot of guys have a really hard time with that. The Wounded Warriors Weekend gives us a chance to connect with one another—to share stories and offer support. You talk to different guys and you see the hope. You see that this isn’t the end. There are guys just like you who wake up in the morning wondering how to get through another day. A weekend like this really clears your head, and I think a lot of guys walked away thinking, Well, maybe it’s not so bad.” Out on the waters of Tobin Lake and the Saskatchewan River, the wounded veterans forgot about their mental and physical scars. They forgot about their limitations. They forgot about all of their struggles and simply fished. Joe and Melanie Rustenburg had heard that Tobin Lake was known for great walleye fishing, and they were excited to experience it for themselves.
“I called Lund and asked them to sponsor again. Before I even finished asking they said, ‘We’re in!’ This whole event pivots around Lund.”
“Even though this weekend wasn’t about winning, Melanie and I had a little competition ourselves,” Joe says with a laugh. “I caught nine walleye. I won.” Other vets reeled in scores of walleye, Northern pike, and lake sturgeon, two of which weighed in at more than 40 pounds. The Wounded Warriors Weekend gained immense popularity throughout the town of Nipawin and surrounding areas, drawing praise from local and provincial officials, as well as residents who enthusiastically donated time, money and their own boats for use during the weekend. “You know, we Canadians aren’t known for being as patriotic as Americans, but when I saw how many gracious men and women donated their boats so that there would be enough for all of us, I knew that the support was there,” Joe says. “It was comforting to see how many people care about us.” Reflecting on the weekend, Blake says, “What started out as a couple of guys getting together and fishing turned out to be so much more. There was a lot of healing that happened, and it’s the kind of healing that has nothing to do with pills. We’re so happy about what we did.” So will there be a 2013 Wounded Warriors Weekend? “It’s a go,” Blake says. “I called Lund and asked them to sponsor again. Before I even finished asking they said, ‘We’re in!’ This whole Opposite: Bobby Hull signs one of his No. 9 event pivots around Lund. I
————— IN THE MIDWEST, THERE ARE FOUR MAIN TOPICS OF CONVERSATION. THEY
ARE—IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER—WEATHER, CROPS, HUNTING AND FISHING. IT IS
THE LAST ITEM ON THE LIST THAT LEADS ME TO MEET BRAD EISENBACHER OF
NORTHWESTERN IOWA, BUT WE EVENTUALLY COVER THEM ALL.
—————— I find Brad at a boat ramp along with his business partner’s son, Jake Morris, and a Lund 1775 Impact. Spirit Lake sprawls just south of the Minnesota-Iowa border and, like many Midwestern lakes hammered by the wind, it has a temper. “It doesn’t take much to get the waves rolling out here,” Brad says. The guys shrug at the whitecaps, zip up their jackets and set about launching the Lund. Gunshots echo off the water. The frigid morning marks the duck season opener, and hunters
haven’t wasted a single second. “I prefer pheasant,” Brad says. “The dogs like doing that the best, too.” Based on the roiling waters, hunting might be the better choice, but Brad and Jake opt to take advantage of one of the last weekends they’ll likely be able to get out on the water before the lake begins to ice. Besides, they own a Lund. “I can’t emphasize enough how nice it is to have a dry ride,” Brad says. He recently bought the boat from Lance Hall at Algona
Marine, located southeast of Spirit Lake. “It’s treating me very well with the stability on the water,” he continues. “And Lance was great at answering all of our questions and getting us in the right boat.” Jake pulls the truck and trailer up the launch and meets us back on the dock. We shove off and head along the shoreline, looking for a good trolling spot. The Impact’s hull attacks the waves with ease, and the Mercury 115-hp FourStroke offers plenty of power as we shoot

— across the lake. “It’s quiet and it’s economical,” Brad says of the engine. He and Jake often join other fishermen up on Minnesota’s Rainy Lake, and he finds he needs to fill up less than the other anglers. “The other boats are always running back to the marina,” he says. “When you’re running back 20 miles for gas, it takes a significant amount of time out of your fishing day.” Brad and Jake usually slow troll for walleye using Lindy rigs and live bait, or they target panfish. “Jake really likes to get after the Northerns when they are biting,” Brad says. “They’re more fun to catch because they’re a lot bigger fish,” Jake chimes in. Not 10 minutes into my conversation with the anglers and we’ve covered the fishing, the hunting and the weather. There’s only one topic left: the crops. And in Iowa, that usually means corn. Sure enough, it’s next on the list. Turns out Brad, his brother Eric and Toby Morris (Jake’s father) created an aftermarket product that helps alleviate the wear and tear cornstalks cause on combine tires. The men, of Ringsted Welding and Fabrication, invented the
RWF Stalk Smasher, a gravity-pressured roller that crushes cornstalks flat and can fit up to 20 different tractor models. With his background in welding, construction and machinery, Brad knows a thing or two about durability. So when it came time to buy a boat, he did his research, and naturally gravitated toward the Lund. “I like that the rivets are staggered,” he says. “That was huge in my decision. I know from experience that with rivets in a straight line, if you get a crack in one it leads to a crack in all.” The rivets, as opposed to welding, appealed to Brad for the unique stresses that water and weather place on a boat. “A welded hull is so rigid that there’s no flexibility in it,” he says. “If you’re out here on Spirit Lake a lot, a welded hull could start to develop cracks. A welded hull might be fine for fairweather fishermen,” he pauses, gesturing into the cold wind, “but not for guys like us.” Jake answers with a knowing laugh and reels in his line to check the condition of his night crawler. He currently wrestles for Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, where he’s working on

Brad and Jake spend as much free time as they can onboard their Lund 1775 Impact, fishing for walleye and panfish on Iowa’s Spirit Lake.
“Along with durability, the way it’s built and the fishability, once you get in a Lund and see the room to fish and the capacity to hold your gear, it’s a no-brainer.”
————— a degree in elementary education and will graduate in May 2014. He and Brad have been hunting and fishing together since Jake was young. His own parents aren’t into either sport. “We’re not related,” Jake says of Brad, “but he’s been around since I was born.” “He got his first eight-point buck with a bow when he was 8 years old,” Brad says with a proud grin. Jake was instrumental in encouraging Brad to buy the Lund. After evaluating several models online, they decided the Lund gave them more for their money. “The overall layout was perfect for what we like to do,” Jake explains. “I just like the setup of everything. There’s so much usable space.” Lund’s quality and reputation, along with fit and finish made their decision to buy quite simple. “This boat has about as much storage
and fishing room as a 21-footer of another brand,” Brad says. “It’s a lot more user-friendly than other boats we looked at. With the rod storage in the middle, it doesn’t take up any space. You still have all the deck to use.” Ultimately, once Brad and Jake looked at the 1775 Impact in person at Algona Marine, the choice was pretty easy. “Along with durability, the way it’s built and the fishability,” Brad says, “once you get in a Lund and see the room to fish and the capacity to hold your gear, it’s a no-brainer.” Usually the pair fish close to home on Spirit Lake, which they can get out on quickly. “I just like how open it is,” Brad says. “We know the outline and contours and where the fish are.” Time plays a part, too. “Our business feels basically brand new,” Brad says. “As farmers learn about us, we’re staying really busy. And that’s a
good thing.” Even though they’d like to trailer more often to the various lakes in Minnesota, they are fortunate to have plenty of fishing opportunities right in northwestern Iowa. “That’s the thing about living here,” says Brad, who has also lived in Arizona. “You can be in good hunting in five minutes and good fishing in 15.” In addition to Spirit Lake, sprawling Okoboji Lake, with its east and west arms, lies just a hair to the south. But it’s not just Iowa’s easy access to the outdoors that keeps the men happy. “I love the people,” Jake explains. “The hunting and fishing is good, but it’s the people that keep me here.” As for the unpredictable and often feisty upper-Midwestern weather, the two don’t mind it a bit. After all, as Brad says, “it makes for
