It all started in 1971, when Carl and Dianna Lowe founded a fish boat company that would go on to become a leading innovator in aluminum boats. The first model year, debuting under the name “Lowe Line,” featured 29 models of jon boats and canoes. Lowe has come a long way since those canoe days, but through those four and a half decades one thing has remained constant: a deep and abiding commitment to delivering high-quality boats at a superior value. “The Lowe name has always been synonymous with quality and dependability,” says Ben Cast, Lowe president. “We’ve never strayed from the founders’ mission to provide anglers and outdoorsmen with a product they can count on at a price they can swallow. Even as we’ve grown and expanded our sights on new and better technologies, more efficient manufacturing processes, and innovative new approaches to boat design, we have kept the real-world needs of our customers as the defining purpose.”

By 1975, Lowe had added its first dedicated bass boats to the lineup with the 16’ SS Hustler, a stick-steer model, and the 15’ Stinger. And while the “Hustler” name was eventually retired, for reasons one can probably imagine, the Stinger remains a proud moniker for some of the company’s most popular fishing machines. Not to be confused with the Fishing Machine line, which would come about later—well after Lowe had established a presence in the deep-V market with its Lunker III 16-footer. “Lowe has never shied away from trying something new,” says Seth Voelker, director of manufacturing engineering, continuous improvement and quality. “Whether that means investing in a new piece of technology that gives us greater efficiency, or developing a new product like our Ultra Series that makes boating accessible to a greater number of people—there’s always room to be better and we pride ourselves on the continuous pursuit of improvement.” Lowe is experienced in helping families to get into pontooning, as well as to enhance their on-water time with an extra dose of luxury. They’ve been doing it since 1979, when Lowe Line produced its first pontoons: the entry-level 20, 24 and 28 Sunbird, and the upscale

Monaco models. Today there continues to be a Lowe for every pontooner, from the aforementioned Ultra, to the high-performance Xtreme, to the versatile Super Sport and Sport Fish, to the supremely appointed Infinity series. “We’re pleased to offer more than 70 different models,” Cast says. “A lineup that large and diverse is no small feat. It points to the deep well of expertise among our employees, combined with a passion for boating that informs every choice we make. We have team members with more than 30 years of manufacturing experience. Boat builders whose families have been involved in the craft for generations. In fact, one of our employees has been with Lowe for all 45 years.” Too much growth comes with its own challenges, which is why Lowe has consistently sought out ways to ensure quality and organization. Over the years the company has been recognized for its approach to process improvement, product quality and customer satisfaction, and this emphasis on self-assessment remains a part of the Lowe philosophy.

THE DAY AT THE DEALERSHIP WHEN HER TWO COLLEGE-AGED DAUGHTERS CLIMBED UP ON A LOWE PONTOON AND WENT GAGA FOR A PAIR OF LIVEWELLS. THEY EVEN PRETENDED TO FISH RIGHT THERE IN THE SHOWROOM. WHEN HER SON CLIMBED UP AND LOUNGED ON THE PLUSH SEATS, SHE KN EW SHE HAD T O B UY TH E B O AT.

“I just said, ‘This is the boat we need. It’s got everything that we want to do,’” Berva says of the Lowe SF 232 the family brought home last spring. She guides the pontoon away from the launch at Kentucky Dam Marina and out into open water. After months of sultry southern heat, the September afternoon shows a hint of a chill. It’s the first Saturday to suggest fall might be on its way, and Berva and her family are set on enjoying every last bit of their first boating season. The pontoon purchase came less than a year after Berva, her husband, Paul Megson, and her son, Donald Rowe (27), were in a terrible car accident last summer. Tragically, Paul did not survive the crash. Berva and Donald both had long roads to recovery, and at the same time, the family had to work hard to keep running their distribution business as well as a horse farm. “We needed something to pull us together after a real tragic time,” Berva reflects. “We’re so close to the lake, I thought maybe we should go look at boats.” Berva lives just five minutes from Kentucky Lake, and she has easy access to nearby Lake Barkley, as well. “This has been really good for us to be able to get out on the lake and be out there in ten minutes,” she says. Both lakes offer up bass, which are what Berva’s daughters, Hillary Rowe (21) and Valerie Rowe (19), are always after. That’s

why they got a little excited when they realized the Lowe had plenty of standard fishing features and could be customized for even more. Hillary and Valerie watch the bass fishing shows, so they knew exactly what to look for and what to ask for at the dealership, Jet-A-Marina in Calvert City. Their father used to take them bass fishing when they were younger, so they even had some prior experience. “Getting a boat was a huge deal for them,” Berva says. “When they realized they could get all the same features as the big bass boats have, in a pontoon, they were ecstatic.” She adds that JetA-Marina, which she describes as exceptional, was quick to outfit the boat with all of their requests and even gave them tutorials on launching, driving and docking. Although Berva had been out boating with friends before, she’d never really operated one herself until buying the Lowe. “It’s easy to maneuver, whether it’s my daughters or me using it,” she says. “At first I was a little intimidated, but after the first day, it was so easy to get in and get out.”

In addition to fishing, the family uses the SF 232 for cruising around on the lake and finding spots to anchor and have a picnic. Berva’s youngest son, Paul Megson Jr. (13), loves the boat for tubing. “We have loads of fun on it,” she says. “It has everything you can imagine. I can’t say enough nice things about that boat.” The SF 232, which has a 150-horsepower Mercury® FourStroke engine, has one benefit that Berva says she can’t put a price tag on: “It’s so relaxing. It’s therapeutic,” she explains. She spent nearly six months recovering from the accident, in which she suffered a fractured neck and skull among other serious injuries. Now that she’s back on her feet, she relishes every moment she has with her family out on the lake. Hillary and Valerie are both attending the University of Kentucky this year, but they, along with Hillary’s three-year-old daughter, Natalie, make the drive home to see their mom and grandma almost every weekend. “She likes fast boats and fast horses,” Berva says of her granddaughter. “They all do.” The family raises rare white thoroughbreds. They even have a few horses at the racetrack, and

Disney used a couple of their horses to play Silver in The Lone Ranger. In addition to running the distribution business, Megson Rowe Delivery, Berva’s husband was a horse trainer. Berva and the rest of the family currently have 30 horses in the mix. With everything they have going on, it’s a wonder they have time to boat, but Berva says they make it a priority, and the ease of towing and launching the Lowe plays a big part. “If I can drive this boat and get it in and out of the water,” she says, “any woman can do it!” In fact she’s been teaching her female friends who have joined her out on the water. They’ve been excited to captain the pontoon and have helped her launch and retrieve it, as well. The family loves Kentucky Lake because the water is usually smooth enough for watersports, but also because the reservoir offers plenty of space to explore. “You can go on and on,” Berva says. “And no matter how often you head back out, there are still places you’ve never seen before. It’s really pretty.” After a few hours of fishing, dipping toes in the water and savoring the evening breeze, the family cuts the engine and settles in to watch the sunset. Sitting at the helm, Berva takes a deep breath of the fresh air and lets it out with a contented sigh. It seems the right boat found them at just the right time.

SO MUCH SO THAT IT HAS EVEN HELPED SHAPE HIS CAREER PATH. “I STARTED OUT GOING FISHING AND BOATING WITH MY FATHER AS A CHILD AND NEVER QUIT,” MARK SAYS. “WHICH WAS WHY I SERVED IN THE U.S. NAVY, BECAUSE I LOVED THE WATER SO MUCH.” FOR THE BURGEONING YOUNG

ANGLER, THAT FATHER-SON BONDING TIME WAS PRICELESS, AND IT CONTRIBUTED TO A DEEP WELL OF FISHING KNOWLEDGE THAT HE CONTINUES TO DRAW FROM. “I HAVE LOTS OF FOND MEMORIES OF MY FATHER LETTING ME DRIVE HIS BOAT WHEN I WAS A KID, AND FISHING SOME OF THE SAME SPOTS THAT I FISH TODAY,” MARK SAYS.

His job with the East Kentucky Power Cooperative keeps him plenty busy, but where there’s a will to fish, there’s a way. And when you happen to live near one of the country’s largest, most beautiful manmade lakes, every boating opportunity makes itself known. “My favorite place to boat and fish is no other than Lake Cumberland,” Mark says. “The lake surrounds the county I live in and has many, many places to launch boats.” A paradise for watersports enthusiasts, campers, hikers and birders, Lake Cumberland provides endless branches and coves for lucky boaters to explore—more than 1,250 miles of shoreline, in fact. Beneath its 65,000-acre surface lives a wide variety of fish, including trout, crappie, spoonbill catfish, walleye and striped bass. The clean water and abundance of small tributaries provide an ideal habitat to keep the swimming population healthy.

Mark has owned the Stinger 195, his first Lowe, for about six months, and already it’s facilitating a successful new chapter in his fishing narrative. He and his family previously owned a cruiserstyle boat, but when his daughter, Breanna, moved to college he seized the chance to put his favorite sport back in the limelight. “I first became familiar with the Lowe brand when I traded in our previous boat at our local dealership, Lookout Marine,” Mark explains. “My daughter and my wife, Nicole, were more ‘cruising the lake’ gals, rather than fishing it,” he adds, hinting that the real riches of Lake Cumberland are the kind that nibble at a hook. Not that the family is excluded from boating when they want to come along. The Stinger has plenty of room to accommodate. The typical crew consists of Nicole, Breanna and Mark’s brother-in-law, Lee Bland. The main requirement for admittance onboard? A willingness to have a good time.

“One of my more recent funny memories was when my fatherin-law, Chuck, and I went out one night to bass fish,” Mark recalls. “We must have been fishing for a few hours and still had nothing in the boat to show for it. As the frustration grew, we decided to fire up the boat and head on back to the house. Right as I started the motor, a 4-pound bass jumped into the boat! My father-in-law had fished for 50 years and had never had one jump into the boat with him. “Every time after that when we went out and didn’t have much luck, he would always bring that memory up and laugh about it,” he adds. “It was always an inside joke for us.” When Mark was considering making the switch back to a fishing boat, he had plenty of guidance. He credits his salesman, Harvey, and the crew at Lookout Marine for their expert recommendation. “Harvey and the owners take good care of everyone. It’s a very professional and courteous staff,” he says, adding with a laugh: “This was my third boat with them, so they pretty well know me!” The Stinger 195 suits a multi-species fisherman’s needs to a T. “I really like the lined body of this boat,” Mark says. “I don’t have to worry about scratching it or deep cleaning it every time I go fishing. The older I get, the less I want to clean on my boat after being out all day or night, and that was a big plus for me.” Asked if there’s one fishing tip he would like to share, Mark’s response is pure wisdom: “My fishing tip is to always have plenty of patience. Always go with the intent of catching nothing—so when you do, you’re happy, and if you don’t… Well, you planned it!” He smiles. “But most importantly, slow down, enjoy life and make memories. That’s what I am doing from here on out.”
