Welcome Message Take a quick scan through the pages of this issue of Meridian Lines, and a theme clearly presents itself: adventure. But when you take the time to read through each story, you’ll see that adventure isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept; rather, it takes on varying forms. Sure, some stories embody the traditional idea of adventure. For example, turn to page 6 to read about the Gilleys, a couple from Vancouver whose Meridian 441 is a catalyst for outdoor excursions—crabbing, hiking, swimming and even dancing. Then switch gears from the cool Pacific Northwest to the balmy shores of Mauritius (page 36). Explore the aquamarine waters, bountiful natural splendor and cultural melting pot on this far-flung island in the Indian Ocean. From there, head to the shores of Greece (page 44). Let your Meridian take you from island to island, where ancient wonders and unbelievable vistas combine for the ultimate cruising experience. Not every adventure need involve adrenaline-pumping excursions, however. Sometimes it’s a bit subtler than that. Meet the Wrights, who head onboard their Meridian 391 every weekend with the mindset of embracing each and every day (page 26). The Canadian couple may own land in Costa Rica, but most weekends involve exploring and relaxing on nearby Lake Champlain. For some, adventure is a gradual process. See how one couple’s purchase of a 441 pushed them out of their comfort zone and into the cruising life all across Florida and the Bahamas (page 22). Then turn to page 14 for some inspiration to try something new yourself. Visiting sports stadiums around the country isn’t out of the norm, but why not try “sailgating” from the comfort of your Meridian? Adventure doesn’t mean one thing to everyone, and its definition can change and grow over time. Adventure can be found in the far-away or the everyday. But one thing’s for sure: When you have a Meridian at your disposal, adventure is guaranteed.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS Written by Jennifer Chesak | Photography by Robert Glover

A yacht might not be the first item that comes to mind when considering a hike, but for outdoor lovers Paul and Betty-Jean Gilley, it’s essential. A yacht gets the Vancouver Island residents to various trailheads strewn about British Columbia’s Gulf Islands. “For us, boating is like going hiking in the woods; we find remote lakes to swim in, swim in the ocean, fish and go crabbing,” Paul says. As long as the Gilleys are outdoors, they’re happy. And their Meridian 441 Sedan helps them access everything the region has to offer. “We are immediately in all the boating waters that one would want to be in,” he adds. The couple used to live in Vancouver proper—or the mainland, as the Gilleys like to call it—and getting to the Gulf Islands took at least an hour or longer. “Now, within 20 minutes, we can be in total seclusion,” Paul explains.

“I just find it very relaxing. W can get away from some of the stresses of business life and just hang out. And the outdoor aspect of boating is wonderful.” After years of making do with an older vessel, the Gilleys craved a new model, and the Meridian’s layout and design caught their eye. In addition to its good looks and ample space, the Meridian featured impressive maneuverability. “We saw that the Meridian had the new pod technology with the joystick control, so that interested us,” Paul says. “We also were impressed by the Skyhook feature, because we boat in areas where we often anchor.” They test-drove the 441 in a tight, crowded Vancouver marina and were sold. The Gilleys keep their boat in Ladysmith Marina, which is south of their farm where they breed racehorses. “It’s a very interesting hobby,” Paul says. “You’ve got to choose the right mare and the right stallion and see what foal comes about. And it’s exciting to see which ones become successful racehorses.” When they aren’t busy with the farm, walking their two dogs, Bonnie and Clyde, or working—Paul owns multiple Vancouver restaurants—they are on their Meridian. “I just find it very relaxing,” Paul says. “We can get away from some of the stresses of business life and just hang out. And the outdoor aspect of boating is wonderful.” Sometimes they simply float in a nearby cove for a while, and other times they head to one of the numerous islands that dot the Strait of Georgia or further beyond. “There are many different spots for us to anchor,” Paul says, “and there are marinas and restaurants all through the area. We constantly visit different locations.”

EASY ON THE EYES

Paul and Betty-Jean appreciate the access to remoteness their 441 affords, including to the Gulf Islands (right).

Each year, the Gilleys return to Desolation Sound, which, true to its name, offers a rural respite among the splendor of mountain-lined fjords and an array of wildlife. “Desolation Sound has just a vast territory of islands to explore,” Paul explains. “And north of Desolation, it gets even more remote.” They’ve been as far north as Blackfish Sound, where they enjoy finding waterfalls and visiting old villages of indigenous tribes where ornate totems still stand. Depending on where they go, Paul and Betty-Jean like to do a little crabbing or fishing for prawns. They’ll aim for prawns when up in Desolation Sound. The process can be a little exhausting when hauling up a few hundred feet of line, but Paul says it’s well worth the effort: “Wow they are delicious. We just throw them in a pan with garlic, wine and onions, and there you go.” For crabbing, they set up their traps in the Gulf Islands, leave them overnight, and then return for their dinner the next day. “We cook them whole and sit down for a crab-cracking feast,” Paul adds.

INNER PEACE

The 441's spacious interior includes two staterooms for comfortable overnighting, and an enclosed bridge to keep the grandkids safe.

The Gilleys often take friends along on their adventures, and they appreciate the Meridian’s two staterooms and heads, and its multiple areas for entertaining. “The boat has so many different spaces,” Paul says, “so even when you have family onboard, people can be in totally separate areas relaxing, and you don’t feel crowded.” Their family includes three married adult sons and two grandchildren. Brett and Jenea have daughter Jaiden (5), and Chris and Hitomi have son Kaito (16 months). Those two families live on the mainland while the Gilleys’ other son, Scott, and his wife, Christina, live on Vancouver Island. With the grandkids occasionally in tow, Paul and Betty-Jean like having the enclosed command bridge to keep them extra safe. The Gilleys relish the opportunity to pass down the boating tradition to yet another generation.

Paul had a small sailboat when he was just 12 years old. Later, he taught sailing. From there, he got into small speed boats before eventually working his way up to a yacht. And, of course, Betty-Jean enjoys the water, too. “She loves it, which is important,” Paul says. “Happy wife, happy life.” The pair met each other while in college at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, and they’ve been married for 45 years. Most recently they’ve added a new boating activity: dancing. That’s right, it turns out a yacht comes in just as handy for cutting a rug as it does for experiencing nature. On a recent summer trip to the village of Ganges on Salt Spring Island, they invited a big group of folks at the marina onto the Meridian. “We had a dance night onboard,” Paul explains. “We just took out the table, and we rocked!”

FREE TECHNOLOGY UPDATE FROM RAYMARINE Raymarine’s award-winning Evolution autopilot systems just got even smarter. Evolution R4 is a free update that adds several new features and enhancements to the system, including Sensor Fusion and TrackIQ™ Intelligent Autopilot Tracking. This update further leverages the system’s state-of-the-art 9-axis heading sensor to smooth and refine the navigation data produced by Raymarine’s GPS sensor and instrumentation. Inside every Evolution sensor core is a sophisticated set of 3D sensors, which include a gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer. These tiny sensors precisely detect a yacht’s heading, attitude, and rates of pitch, roll, heave and yaw. With R4 Sensor Fusion, the Evolution sensor core intelligently filters the negative effects of vessel motion from the GPS and wind instrument data streams. The end result is an even higher level of precise autopilot tracking with little to no deviation from the course line. You can update the software yourself using your connected Raymarine multifunction display (MFD). When your MFD is updated to LightHouse II Release 17, it will automatically upgrade your autopilot to Evolution R4 as well. Software is available now on Raymarine.com, or through your MFD’s online update system.

WATER SPORTS Written by Elli Thompson Purtell

For diehard sports fans, nothing beats having a ticket to see your favorite team in person. Or does it? Several professional and college stadiums around the country boast prime waterfront locations, giving fans another—perhaps even better—seat for watching the game. The next time your favorite team is playing, ditch the couch, forego the crowded parking lots and pricey stadium ticket and head out for some “sailgating” onboard your Meridian. Watch the game in sheer comfort while being close enough to the stadium to hear the crack of the bat and the roar of the crowd. How’s that for a VIP experience? PNC PARK

Home to the Pittsburgh Pirates, PNC Park celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2016. Resting on the North Shore of Pittsburgh’s Allegheny River, PNC Park provides a stunning backdrop for passing boaters. Meridian owners can drop anchor for sweeping views of the beautiful 38,000-seat stadium, with the Pittsburgh skyline behind them. PNC Park has the look of a classic ballpark, and it’s highest seat sits only 88 feet from the field, so that those crossing the city’s Roberto Clemente Bridge can see in at eye level. Those on the water are treated to expansive views of the inside of the park, which looks especially striking lit up at night. As a bonus, those who lean more toward football can get up close and personal with neighboring Heinz Field, home to the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers and the NCAA Pittsburgh Panthers.

Nissan Stadium

NISSAN STADIUM

Tennessee’s Cumberland River flows west from the Appalachian Mountains, passing through Nashville on its way to the Ohio River. Nissan Stadium houses the NFL’s Tennessee Titans in the fall, as well as Major League Soccer matches from March through October. If a professional sports ticket is out of your budget (or you simply don’t feel like dealing with the crowds and chaos), retreat to your Meridian and position yourself off the shores of the Cumberland. If sports aren’t your thing, drop anchor on a warm night and catch one of the many concerts that take place in the stadium, including the annual CMA Music Festival in June. ALASKA AIRLINES FIELD AT HUSKY STADIUM

Known by most as simply Husky Stadium, the home of the University of Washington football team is one of the most gorgeous college football stadiums in the country. A multi-million-dollar renovation took place in 2013, with the open end of the stadium overlooking Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountains. As many as 12,000 people take to Lake Washington on Saturdays in the fall to cheer on the Huskies. Some make a whole weekend of it, docking in Husky Harbor’s new docks that accommodate yachts up to 100 feet, and overnighting after the game. Others sailgate onboard their yacht before the game and take advantage of the round-trip shuttle service provided by the university for just $8/person.

Owning a Meridian Yacht means taking full advantage of your time on the water. Extend your escape by bringing the

best entertainment onboard with the award-winning KVH® TracVision® satellite TV system. TracVision systems are the distinguished winner of the NMEA Best Product award for 19

MCLANE STADIUM

Though this college football stadium is relatively new (just more than 2 years old), it’s already earned a place in the hearts of Baylor University fans for its beautiful structure and prime location on the north bank of the Brazos River in Waco, Texas. Baylor, like the University of Washington, is proud of its sailgating ways. The university offers reserved slips in the Baylor Basin for donors to the Baylor Bear Foundation. But you don’t have to spend the big bucks to enjoy a prime viewing spot or feel the camaraderie of gameday. A group of alumni, fans and friends who call themselves the Bearmada meets before every home game and even plans to offer its own merchandise soon. SLIP SPACE, JUST A CLICK AWAY Travel convenience has come to the marine industry! No more Google searching for marinas. No more calling for slip availability. No more confusing instructions for how to get there and when to show up. Snag-A-Slip, a brand-new online boat slip rental system, allows you to explore marinas by name, city, state or map region, and search for boat slip availability based on travel dates and yacht length, beam, depth and power requirements. Once you find an available slip, book wherever and whenever you choose. Both you and the marina will receive a confirmation email. “The goal of Snag-A-Slip is to get boaters boating,” says Dan Cowens, founder of Snag-A-Slip. “What was previously a time-consuming and frustrating part of planning a boating vacation is now a lot easier—and you don’t even have to pick up the phone. Spending less time finding a marina leaves more time for the fun part of boating, which is being on the water and exploring new places.” Snag-A-Slip is adding new marinas daily, with more than 100 partnerships currently on the East Coast, the Gulf Shore, the West Coast and the Great Lakes, as well as in Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico. AT&T Park

AT&T PARK

Perhaps one of the most iconic baseball stadiums in the country, AT&T Park is a water-lover’s dream. Nestled on the shores of the San Francisco Bay, AT&T Park delights Giants fans and visitors alike with its stunning stadium that yawns open to the water at its Eastern end. Anchor in the area of water affectionately known as McCovey Cove, named after former Giants’ first baseman and power hitter, Willie McCovey. Watching a Giants game from onboard your Meridian affords not only panoramic views of the city and the park’s diamond of bright green grass, but also the opportunity to see a “splash hit”—when a home run ball lands in McCovey Cove on the fly. So far, fans have seen 71 splash hits since the park opened, 35 of which came from famous Giant Barry Bonds. Besides stocking up on your sailgating essentials, be sure to bring a net in case you’re in the right spot for the next splash hit.

CHASING DREAMS Written by Elli Thompson Purtell

When Mike and Vanessa Mesa married, they brought two differen perspectives to the table. Vanessa, known by her loved ones as an ambitious dreamer, is always ready to take on a new adventure or pursue a new idea. Mike, on the other hand, prefers staying in his comfort zone. Routine is the way to go, and in order to take a few risks, he needs a push. As time has passed, Mike has slowly become more willing to step outside his comfort zone. But not entirely, as one would expect, due to having Vanessa by his side. Instead, Vanessa gives the credit to the couple’s Meridian 441, Family Memories.

“The Meridian has changed our lives,” Vanessa says. “Mike has become more adventurous in that he wants to explore the Bahamas and the Florida Keys. We usually stay overnight in our marina, but this past summer, we overnighted in the Miami Bay on the hook. It was a great experience to sit in the cockpit and just be surrounded by water.” The Mesas, who bought their Meridian 441 from MarineMax Miami, have also received a boost of adventure from the dealership’s fun-filled Getaways. The couple has participated in the trip to Ocean Reef, where they enjoyed the holiday lights from the comfort of their 441, and to Bimini North and South, which they attended with two other couples. “My brother Robert likes to spearfish,” Vanessa says, “so one night we had a delicious dinner on the fly bridge with the air conditioning on, which was awesome after being out all day in the sun. We had battery candles all around the table, and it was very romantic.” The Meridian affords special nights like these even when the Mesas stick closer to home. Their location in Grove Isle Marina gives them access to many beautiful sights and experiences in the Miami area. Mike’s brother and sister-in-law like to join them on the yacht and explore the Miami River dining experience, docking at one of several trendy restaurants along the river for a gourmet meal. “Our boat makes an ordinary day into a special and romantic evening,” Vanessa says. This past summer, they got a membership to The Fisher Island Club, located on an island in Miami Beach. “We were there almost every weekend,” Vanessa says. “We docked and overnighted there. It was like having a condo on the water.” Family Memories does a good job of living up to its name. The Mesas have two children—Alex (28) and Christina (9)—who love spending time on the Meridian. Alex lives in Orlando, but visits as often as he can. He brings his friends onboard, where they soak up the sun on the comfortable bow sunpads. When he’s not around, Christina takes advantage of having much of the 441 to herself. Like a true princess, she gets to claim the VIP stateroom as her own, often inviting friends onboard to play dress up. When the parents need some downtime, Mike loves to tinker around in the 441’s spacious engine room, while Vanessa sits in the cockpit with a glass of wine in hand.

“ As a family, we have enjoyed cooking on the boat, spending quiet evenings watching the sunset, and doing watersports. We love having a boat in Miami because it gives us something to do on the weekends instead of being in a mall or at a movie. We can make a three-day weekend into a family vacation.” Mike works in the European luxury car business, and Vanessa works in the banking industry. Though they both love what they do, their careers often require long hours in the office. This is where Family Memories comes in handy. “As a family, we have enjoyed cooking on the boat, spending quiet evenings watching the sunset, and doing watersports,” Vanessa says. “We love having a boat in Miami because it gives us something to do on the weekends instead of being in a mall or at a movie. We can make a three-day weekend into a family vacation.”

Their reasons for staying true to the brand all these years form nothing short of a novel: “The 441 has the best layout compared to any other boat that we’ve seen in the 45-foot range,” Mike says. “The salon area is comfortable, the master and VIP staterooms are perfect for couples and children. The fly bridge can be open or closed with the AC. The cockpit is spacious, and the front of the boat is beautiful to lay on the sunpads.” To boot, they simply like the way Meridians look. “We love the soft colors and the new designs,” Vanessa says.

But perhaps the greatest family memory happened in 2015, when Mike and Vanessa tied the knot and took a wedding cruise onboard their brand-new 441 shortly after. “We have wonderful memories of that day on the boat,” Vanessa says.

No doubt they appreciate their Meridian for the places it’s taken them and will continue to take them in the future. Next up: the Exumas. “Our dream is to go to other islands in the Bahamas for 2 to 4 weeks and enjoy the different cultures,” Vanessa says. “We want to just forget about the normal everyday things and cruise to the Caribbean with no worries at all.”

The Mesas have long been fans of Meridian. They purchased their first, a 411, in 2004, and their second, another 411, in 2007. But soon they felt the pull of a larger boat, and upgraded to the 441. “When we were in the market for buying our first boat together as a family, we looked at all types of boats with a fly bridge or sports cruisers,” Mike says. “But when we saw the layout and the price of the Meridian in comparison to other boats, we made our decision.”

me.fa16.Miami.indd 25

That sentiment is no surprise coming from a natural free spirit. But it’s more special that Mike agrees. Owning a Meridian clearly brings out the adventurer in everyone.

IN PURSUIT OF UTOPIA Written by Alexa M. Poteet

Born a native English speaker in a predominantly French province, Canadian Richard Wright has done things a little differently since birth. So perhaps it’s no surprise that the Montrealer did things his own way when it came to bringing home his beloved Meridian 391, too. After purchasing the boat privately in West Palm Beach, Florida, the intrepid Wright decided he’d tick off a lifetime of firsts all at once: his first trip of such an incredible distance (more than 1,500 miles), his first trip on a Meridian, his first trip on the Intracoastal, and his first trip on the open ocean, tackling 8-to-10-foot waves. Some might think him extreme, but Richard counts the 16-day excursion full of new experiences one of his favorite boating memories.

HAVE YACHT, WILL TRAVEL

Richard and Guylaine have grand plans for future adventures—and many more weekends on Lake Champlain (top left).

Today, Richard, his wife, Guylaine, and his two adult children, Michelle and Elliott, cruise whenever they can. Unsurprisingly, the Wrights, always marching to the beat of their own drum, have an unusual docking arrangement as well. While the nearby Saint Lawrence River is nice, Richard had his eye on a more pristine waterway for his 391—scenic Lake Champlain. “Lake Champlain is about 125 miles long with a small section that extends into Quebec,” he shares. “However, the most spectacular cruising grounds are on the U.S. side.” Predictably, nothing could stop him from making that lovely cruising area in New York state his home base, even if he had to cross a border to do it. “Door-to-door our marina is less than an hour from our home,” he says. “With a Nexus (customs pre-approved clearance for immigration), crossing the border each weekend by car has been greatly simplified.” Interestingly enough, Richard and Guylaine have found that although they dock in the States, the boating community on Lake Champlain holds some serious echoes of home. “You rarely hear English spoken on the beaches and almost never at the various marinas,” Richard says. “I would hazard a guess that Quebecois represent about 80 percent of the maritime economy on the lake!”

me.fa16.Montreal.indd 27

Meridian Lines Magazine | 27

profil

That’s just fine by the Wrights, who love Lake Champlain for its fresh, clear water, which reaches a balmy 75 degrees by the end of each summer. In particular, Richard and Guylaine are fond of the numerous little coves and bays to anchor and seek shelter. There is ample history on the lake between French and American soldiers of yore and, as such, the area has many forts, including Ticonderoga and Fort Montgomery. As far as local haunts go, however, the Wrights are particularly fond of Vermont. “Burlington is on the lake and offers a wonderful stop-off point with many restaurants,” Richard says. Last year for the first time, the Wrights caught an airshow in Burlington. “It was spectacular sitting on the bow of the boat watching the U.S. Thunderbirds do their thing,” Richard says.

MAKING THE UPGRADE

The Wrights’ 391 includes personalized additions like a Fusion® sound system, and much appreciated standard features like the large windows and icemaker.

The 391 has impacted more than just the couple’s downtime in the summer months. As Richard nears retirement from his own commercial-lighting company in Montreal, the Wrights expect their time on the water to increase substantially. In fact, they’ve recently downsized to a condo to decrease the time and expense of keeping up a larger home. Ever after adventure, they have a plan for those long Canadian winters that keep them from their beloved Lake Champlain. “We have land in Costa Rica, where we intend to a build a home for the harsh Canadian winter months,” Richard says. “So winters will be spent in Costa Rica growing avocados and coffee, and summer will be spent primarily on the boat.” Indeed, it appears the Wrights have it all figured out.

“ Meridian has done a wonderful job offering a complete boating package at an affordable price.” So what made Meridian Yachts perfect for this adventurous twosome? Richard shopped several brands but always seemed to return to Meridian for its open windows, grand layout and quality materials. “I think Meridian has done a wonderful job offering a complete boating package at an affordable price,” he says. “Little design features like the access to the engine compartment via the flybridge stairs are a nice touch, and we appreciate that the galley is intimately close to the main salon. Even when you’re inside you feel a part of the outside.” While there’s much to love about the 391, since the Wrights like to entertain, they joke that their favorite feature of the boat is the icemaker. Richard’s even added some cool upgrades to take his Meridian cruising experience to the next level, such as a Fusion® sound system with a subwoofer on the bridge. The luxury of his 391 really won him over on that first epic cruise from Florida to New York. “Arriving on Lake Champlain in early May, we ran into unseasonably cold weather,” he says. “Thanks to the trusty genny, we slept in a warm and cozy environment. The boat performed wonderfully throughout the entire trip.” Richard was so impressed with his new purchase that he had a 45-page hardcover book custom made to commemorate the voyage and all the memories he made.

JUST ADD WATER

Interlux introduces Micron WA (Water Activated), the newest addition to their range of industryleading Micron Technology antifouling paints. Using a novel paint technology called Water Activated Matrix, Micron WA delivers vibrant color and a uniform appearance, along with powerful antifouling performance that increases fuel efficiency and reduces wea Consisting of a densely packed, structured arrangement of biocide, coloring pigment and voids, Water Activated Matrix appears matte when first applied. However, upon immersion, water enters the paint film and filters through the matrix, saturating the pigments and developing the bright, crisp color of the paint, while simultaneously releasing the active antifouling ingredients.

“ It truly expresses how we see our boat. Utopia is an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. Our Utopia is not imagined; it’s real!” There was only one name for such a yacht in his opinion: Utopia. “It truly expresses how we see our boat,” Richard confides. “Utopia is an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect. Except our Utopia is not imagined; it’s real!” While they are adventure-seekers, a typical day on the water for the Wrights is full of more everyday relaxation than their far-flung expeditions might let on. Usually they make some coffee and retreat to the flybridge to watch the day develop. Depending on their moods or the weather, they’ll settle in for a good book or simply go for a swim. The evenings are when they feel their Meridian really shines, though. “The best time of day is when the sun starts to set, the winds calm down, and we open a bottle of cabernet sauvignon during cocktail hour with friends,” Richard says. Never one to sit still, they are dreaming of a future cruise back down the Intracoastal to Florida to make the crossing to the Bahamas. “We want to spend at least one entire winter living aboard and exploring as many of the 700 islands and reefs as possible,” Richard explains. He says a Great Loop voyage is also in the works.

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE

The Wrights’ 391 allows them to soak up the world around them, and each other.

Soaking up every one of life’s precious moments is particularly important for the Wrights now. Even the jump to upgrade to a Meridian from their old boat was spurred on by a change in life philosophy. “Now in my late 50s and having had a brother who passed away at 47,” Richard says, “our thinking changed to a philosophy of only living once and not being able to take your money with you. Enjoy life while you can. So we made the change and transitioned to the luxury boating lifestyle.” This shift in thinking has made every moment sweeter for the Wrights as they feel now, more than ever, they enjoy what life is truly about: spending quality time together. Their 391 is just the cherry on top.

GAME CHANGER

The 2017 Yukon Denali lives by its own definition of boldness

QUIET CONFIDENCE Written by Elli Thompson Purtell

Being bold is typically associated with flashiness. The brighter, louder and more in-your-face the product, the bolder it is. But there’s a second kind of boldness that’s more subtle. This type consists of an assuredness, a cool confidence that comes from having it all and knowing you have nothing to prove.

Your Meridian Yacht represents this type of boldness. With its clean, sweeping lines and graceful on-water presence, it draws the gazes of passers-by unlike any other yacht in the marina. Similarly, the 2017 GMC® Yukon® Denali® makes a definitive statement from its premium exterior to its proven power to its array of next-generation technology. Striking style elements cover the Yukon Denali, including its signature Denali grille and GMC LED Signature lighting. The crafted interior features soft-wrapped surfaces with contrasting French seam stitching, burnished-aluminum trim and Java Burl poplar wood accents for an understated luxury that makes a powerful impression. Beautiful use of space allows for storage and cargo management, including power-release fold-flat seats in the second row and power-folding seats in the third row. The Yukon Denali is also quietly confident when it comes to performance. A 6.2L EcoTec3 V-8 engine provides a best-in-class 420 horsepower and 460 pounds of torque, and Active Noise Cancellation helps deliver a quieter

interior. The Yukon Denali is also equipped with Magnetic Ride Control suspension that speed-reads the road and responds to harshness in an instant. Head to the marina with complete confidence, thanks to a comprehensive suite of driver-alert features. The Safety Alert Seat provides the driver the option of getting seat-bottom vibration pulses instead of audible alerts, and the Forward Collision Alert with Low Speed Forward Automatic Braking helps make drivers aware if they’re following a vehicle too closely or are in danger of a front-end collision. The Yukon Denali offers an extensive selection of entertainment technology as well, including an 8-inch diagonal IntelliLink Color Touch, Radio with Navigation1, Apple CarPlayTM and Android AutoTM compatibility2, and the Bose® Centerpoint® surround sound 10-speaker system. A new available built-in Shop icon offers apps to download, and an available 4G built-in Wi-Fi® hotspot3 gives you on-the-go internet access. COLORFUL CULTURE

Behold a spectrum of vibrant color in Maheswarnath Temple (above), Notre Dame Aurilliatrice Chapel (left), and the Flacq District and Port Louis (below left).

GET CULTURED Although multiple groups of people passed through Mauritius in the 10th century, Arab mariners were the first to lay any sort of claim to the island by naming it Dina Robin. Over the years, the country was colonized by several countries—first the Portuguese in the 16th century, followed by the Dutch, French and British. Today, the population of more than 1.2 million consists of an array of backgrounds: Indian, African Creole, Malay and French-Mauritius, to name a few. See this diversity reflected in the buildings, markets, restaurants and sidewalks of capital city Port Louis, founded in 1735. Taste-test a variety of cuisine from French to Indian to Chinese to African. Check out the bustling Caudan Waterfront’s restaurants and stores, and head to the Flacq District on the island’s eastern side to experience the country’s largest open-air market. A colorful display of fresh produce, spices, clothing and other goods will dazzle before your eyes. Religious sites of many faiths offer quiet solace, informational tours and the chance to see varying styles of architecture. The Jummah Mosque, built in 1852, is the oldest in Mauritius and combines Indian, Creole and Islamic styles of architecture. An active place for worship, the mosque accepts visitors inside every day except Friday and during Ramadan. Forty minutes north of Port Louis in the village of Triolet lies the Maheswarnath Temple, a Hindu place of worship honoring the god Shiva. The white temples were built in a Bengal style, and brightly colored statues and floral arrangements provide a stark contrast. About 8 miles farther north lies the Notre Dame Aurilliatrice Chapel. Immediately recognized for its bright red roof that contrasts the turquoise sea behind it, this Catholic church is the heart of Cap Malheureux, a small fishing village.

ENJOY THE WATER Every inch of Mauritius coastline exudes life and color. Start with one of the dozens of gorgeous beaches that ring the island. Visitors and locals alike head to Roches Noires and Poste Fayette beaches during the warmer months for the near-constant cooling sea breeze, and to enjoy ideal kitesurfing and windsurfing waters. Bras d’Eau, a bay inside the lagoon of Poste Lafayette on the country’s northeast corner, features a public beach where you can view both the sunrise and sunset. Flic-en-Flac, a small seaside town on the western side of the island, features one of the longest beaches on the island. White sand stretches for more than 8 miles and is dotted with rentable bungalows, restaurants and nightlife. Swim and snorkel in Flic-en-Flac’s lagoon, which is protected by coral reefs. If you’re missing the pleasure of being onboard your Meridian, head to Blue Bay where you can rent a private speed boat or join a charter to see the island’s many treasures from the water. Belle Mare Beach offers a variety of adventure, from parasailing to diving to speedboat tours that take you to nearby waterfalls. Or simply relax on the white sand and soak up the sun. Take a catamaran out on the western coast to swim with wild dolphins, and if plan your trip in September, you may have the opportunity to see migrating whales. BE ONE WITH NATURE Pull yourself away from the ocean and venture inland to see the other natural gems Mauritius has to offer. The Roches Noires area in the northeast part of the island features a series of interconnected lava tubes that have created magical caves for exploring, freshwater streams for

me.fa16.mauritius.indd 41

taking a dip, and a variety of plant and animal life. Head to the direct opposite side of the island to experience several natural wonders. Black River Gorges National Park covers more than 42 square miles and boasts eight designated hiking trails of varying degrees of difficulty. All trails offer breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys, the ocean, waterfalls and a range of wildlife. Further to the southwest is the unique colored earth of Chamarel. Sand dunes consisting of layers of rainbow-colored grains—red, violet, green, yellow—cover a small area surrounded by lush greenery. Plan your visit at sunrise for an even more spectacular sight. (Side note: Chamarel is also home to a rum factory that’s worth a visit for some local sips.) At the southwestern tip of the island, a 1,824-foot basaltic monolith known as Le Morne Brabant rises at the end of a long peninsula. Take a guided hike to the peak for unmatched views of the Indian Ocean. Along the way, take in the foliage, waterfalls and caves of this UNESCO Heritage Site that was once a temporary refuge for escaped slaves. Head to the water once again to discover the Ile aux Aigrettes, a small island about a half-mile off the southeast coast. A short jetty trip will take you to the shores of this restored island where you can take a guided tour to see the native plants, birds and reptiles that inhabit the island after a 30-year conversation effort.

GREECE Written by Colleen Tolan

If it’s true that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, so too do the endless adventures in Greece begin with one glimpse of its impeccable beauty. The vast panoramas of sugar-cube homes swathed in the sparkle of the dazzling blue sea lure you in like the call of the ancient Sirens. And with more than 3,000 islands and islets, Greece offers beaches, culture and cuisine that keep you wanting more. Hike within the great expanses of Crete, time travel back to the Medieval Ages in Rhodes, and soak in the blissful romanticism of Santorini. Let loose in Ios and dine like royalty in Mykonos. Greece may have conquered your imagination before you even have the chance to set foot on a single beach, but rest assured that upon arrival every expectation will be exceeded. And while many have visited, few have experienced the effortlessness and luxury of discovering the Greek Islands by personal yacht. Take the helm of your Meridian and prepare for the peripatetic vacation of a lifetime.

CRETE Once home to the influential and ancient Minoans, Crete predates Greek civilization and remains the largest and most populated of the Greek Islands today. Venture to the charming port of Chania, one of Greece’s largest cities, to find bright homes and locally pressed olive oil. Crete’s mountainous expanses and pink-sanded seashores stretch for miles; and while it is an incredibly popular spot for tourists, there are plenty of quiet coves and peaceful settlements to explore. Jagged cliffs towering over the Mediterranean conceal quiet fishing villages and winding trails perfect for hiking. One such concealed place is the southern village of Azogires, where rumor has it one night a year you can spot the vagrant nereids—the ancient mythological barefooted sea-nymphs—in its freshwater lagoon.

ANCIENT BEAUTY

Greece’s splendor knows no bounds (clockwise from left): the coast of Crete; the Acropolis of Lindos; Chania, Crete; and the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes.

RHODES Step back in time and discover the historical charm of the medieval-walled island of Rhodes. Perhaps the most powerful of the Dodecanese Islands, Rhodes is a blend of new and old, sealed together like a historically rich time capsule. Since the Stone Age, Rhodes has played a pivotal role in Greek history as it was established with trade in mind. Today, strong fortifications dating back to the 7th-century A.D. still stand. Explore the cobblestoned streets of Old Town and allow yourself to get lost in its towering walls and ancient ruins. Stop by the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, originally built as a Byzantine citadel, to experience Gothic architecture and stunning mosaics. And after you’ve had your dose of medieval history, head south to the picturesque town of Lindos where you’ll find the lovely modernized village on a slope, with the historic Acropolis atop and crystal-clear waters secluded in a natural bay down below. With its old-time charm and its turquoise waters, Rhodes is the perfect place to unwind.

SANTORINI Crescent-shaped Santorini, which peeks out above the indigo Aegean Sea, is actually a collection of five smaller islands, all of which formed after one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in history. Today, the volcanic sediment provides Thira, the main island, with an impossibly romantic scene where frosting-white homes are layered on top of the multi-colored slab of land. Take a donkey to the hilltop village of Oia, the Island’s northernmost tip, or sail to Nea Kameni, the small uninhabited active part of the volcano. From the main island, Nea Kameni might not look like much, but once you set foot on its lunar-like surface you’re sure to have a surreal and exhilarating experience as you climb up solidified black lava and bathe in its hot springs. Or, if the thrill of standing in the sulfuric air of a still-active volcano isn’t so appealing, Santorini’s rich culture offers plenty of alternatives. For a day out of the sun, make your way to the unique art gallery Art Space located in Exo Gonia. Art Space, originally built as a winery in 1830, has since been converted into a gallery that contains cave-like porticos—and still serves locally made wine. IOS Turn up the volume and let loose for the night. If you are looking for an enchanting night under Grecian skies, look no further than Ios. Known as the party island, Ios has an electrifying night scene that is sure to leave you with lifelong memories. Though if you are not the partying type, don’t be dissuaded. Ios may be known for its youthful night scene, but that is far from all it has to offer. Beyond the noise, and especially outside of busy season (June-August), you can find sweet serenity in the blue-roofed city of Chora and its inlet villages. Ios is laced with winding paths and historic sites, including Homer’s tomb, where the late poet was supposedly buried. Sightsee by day and dance into the night, but don’t leave Ios before getting a taste of some of the famous Greek cheeses like skotiti, a local soft goat cheese with herbs.

KEEPING IT CLASSIC Nobilo Wines and New Zealand’s Matt Lambert, head chef and owner of acclaimed restaurant The Musket Room, have developed a fresh take on a classic New Zealand dish, which pairs perfectly with a glass of Nobilo’s Icon Pinot Noir. “Mention New Zealand and food to anyone and the first thing they say is ‘Lamb!’” Chef Lambert says. “In this recipe, the lamb takes on a fantastic texture from salting it in advance and is finished in garlic with nice, subtle earthy accents. The garden vegetables are basically a deconstructed approach to a ratatouille, but instead of being overcooked and destroyed, it is gently pan seared.” PREP AND COOK TIME: 90 MINUTES | SERVES: 4

INGREDIENTS

COASTAL CHARM

(Clockwise from top left) Sail to Nea Kameni, an active volcano, wander the pathways of Oia Village, and stay up all night in Ios.

LAMB & JUS • 2 New Zealand lamb racks • 6 cups chicken stock • 1 cup Nobilo Icon Pinot Noir • 2 basil leaves • 4 mint leaves • Lemon juice • 1 tbsp butter

VEGETABLES & GARNISH • 8 baby zucchini • 8 toy box eggplants • 8 yellow patty pans • 2 large red peppers • Basil leaves • Black mint leaves • Dehydrated squash blossoms • Garlic flowers

METHOD LAMB 1. Trim and French the bones. 2. Apply a liberal amount of salt. 3. Wrap in plastic and let stand for 4-5 days. 4. Grill or pan roast to an internal temp of 115°F/46°C and let rest for at least 10 minutes. JUS 1. Reduce the stock by 2/3. 2. Separately reduce the Nobilo Icon Pinot Noir to 1/8 cup. 3. Add herbs. 4. Add the red wine reduction to jus base. 5. When you are ready, while stirring, add the butter and make sure it becomes one with the stock/jus. 6. Add small amounts of lemon juice to balance out the weight and mouthfeel of the sauce. 7. Add salt only if necessary. VEGETABLES 1. Cut all vegetables in half and cook in a pan cut-side down on medium heat until golden brown and al dente, approximately 3-4 minutes, depending upon the size of the vegetables. 2. Use olive oil, making sure it doesn’t get too hot as it burns, but allowing its flavor to make the dish sing. PLATING AND THE GARNISH 1. To plate, simply slice the lamb and stack in a way so that the bones are sticking up. 2. With the roasted vegetables, make a rectangular stack flush against the lamb. 3. Place basil and mint leaves and flowers around the vegetables as desired. VISIT NOBILOWINES.COM FOR MORE RECIPES.

MYKONOS Join the flock of luxury yachts in Mykonos to end your island-hopping adventure in style. Cosmopolitan Mykonos, known for its picturesque scenery and opulence, is one of the most popular destinations for a reason. The whitewashed buildings and rolling hills, transparent waters and massive windmills in the distance, make Mykonos feel like a dreamland. For an architectural treat, visit the Church of Panagia Paraportiani. This historical site consists of five small churches built one on top of the other in such a way that it resembles a giant salt mound. For a romantic evening out, treat yourself to a traditional Greek meal at one of the island’s countless gourmet restaurants, many of which feature renowned Greek chefs. Wander around Little Venice, aptly named for its strip of multistory balconied homes built flush to the sea, that resemble the iconic architecture of Venice, Italy. And be sure to save some time to sprawl out on the chalk-white sand of Elia Beach for a coastline experience you won’t want to end.

READY, STEADY, GO Seakeeper’s revolutionary gyro stabilization technology significantly reduces boat roll, dramatically cutting down on the type of movements that can cause seasickness. How does it work? Inside Seakeeper’s vacuum encapsulation, a flywheel spins at speeds up to 10,700 rpm. When a boat begins to roll in the waves, the gyro tilts fore and aft, creating a powerful torque that counteracts the port-to-starboard rocking. Seakeeper’s computer sensor automatically adjusts the torque based on sea conditions so the captain doesn’t have to. “With Seakeeper, factors like the weather, time of day and sea conditions won’t keep you from using your boat and enjoying your experience on the water,” says Andrew Semprevivo, Seakeeper’s vice president of sales and marketing. The Seakeeper 5 eliminates up to 95 percent of boat roll. The lightweight product uses modest electrical power, no outside appendages, and can be installed off centerline, if necessary.
