Any Way You Want It We humans have a tendency to categorize things. We like to fit ideas into neat boxes and consider ourselves a certain type of person. I'm an introvert. He's a sports fan. We're active people. There's an element of reassurance that comes from knowing who we are. Yet, there's also something exciting about letting these strict identifiers dissolve. Maybe you like reading a book at home and going out and socializing. Perhaps you enjoy the opera and watching football. Nowhere is it better to rid yourself of these limitations than out on the water. Owning a Meridian opens up a world of possibilities, and taking time to explore each of them leads to unexpected moments and lifelong memories. In this issue of Meridian Lines, you’ll read about owners who do just that. There’s the Boston-area couple who enjoy taking their 441 to Cape Cod's Provincetown for adrenaline-pumping kite surfing, but are equally content to bob lazily in Boston Harbor and watch the sunset. The next time your inner explorer kicks in, consider following in the footsteps of Darlene and Bruce Reuser. The couple recently traversed the Great Loop and the Down East Loop on their Meridian. When your softer side surfaces, take a page out of Ray and Sarah Hilton's playbook. They use their 441 to spend quality time with their kids and grandkids on the gorgeous waters of Charleston. Meridian owners’ experiences are as varied as they are, but one thing that will never change is Meridian's focus on quality engineering, craftsmanship, style and comfort. This commitment to excellence never wavers, so that you can let loose and explore the many different sides of yourself.

BLISS ON THE BAY Written by Jennifer Chesak | Photography by Mike Calabro

Work like a captain, play like a pirate. That’s Kurt and Tracy Kaufman’s motto, and it couldn’t be more fitting. Kurt is a 777 captain for United Airlines and, now that their children are grown, the couple spends much of their free time exploring the Chesapeake Bay on their Meridian 441 Sedan. “The boat is definitely a happy place,” Kurt says. “Even though we have a lot of fun on it, it’s very low-key, very relaxing.” The Kaufmans’ three daughters recently flew the coop, with Alyssa (25) finishing up pharmacy school at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond; Ashley (22) graduating from Virginia Tech and applying to med school; and Savannah (18) just entering her freshman year at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. After their daughters’ departures, the couple looked for a new activity to share together. They have since made it their mission to explore as much of the Chesapeake as possible onboard their 441, named Wild Hare.

“One of the things we were looking for was livability. You have all the conveniences of home that you can move around on the water.” “Now that we are empty nesters, we are going to become serious pirates,” Tracy says with a laugh. “But we ’re nice pirates.” The Kaufmans purchased their Meridian from MarineMax Joppa, just northeast of Baltimore. Kurt, a former tournament water-skier and driver, was used to smaller vessels—20-footers at most—but decided it was time to add a yacht to their small fleet for overnighting and hosting friends.

“One of the things we were looking for was livability,” he says, lauding the two staterooms and two heads of the Meridian 441. “You have all the conveniences of home that you can move around on the water.” The flybridge style appealed to them for its roomy layout. “You’re not all over the top of each other,” he adds. “The Meridian has met all of our expectations. The livability has gone hand-in-hand with the entertaining. We didn’t have to sacrifice one to get the other.” The couple was so impressed with what their Meridian could offer, they even convinced friends Paul and Joy Merski to purchase their own Meridian. As an airline pilot, Kurt knows a thing or two about being in the captain’s seat and says the 441 has all the bells and whistles. “I love the way the Meridian handles. It handles like it’s on rails on the water,” he says, adding that the Zeus propulsion system makes it a cinch getting in and out of slips or busy marinas. “It takes the guesswork out of it and practically does it all

on its own.” Kurt is quick to point out, however, that his pilot nature sometimes propels him to do things the old fashioned way without the joystick, just for fun. Though they reside in Fredericksburg, Virginia, the Kaufmans keep Wild Hare in Baltimore where they have easy access to the bay and to their favorite hang-out spots. Annapolis is a go-to destination when the couple are in the mood for a vibrant nightlife scene. “That waterfront area is just really rich in that boating tradition, and the entertainment, bars and pubs are just great,” Kurt says. “It attracts a fun bunch of people.” For a low-key weekend, the Kaufmans head to St. Michaels, on the bay’s eastern shore. A quaint maritime destination, St. Michaels offers fantastic dining and shopping along with several inns and bed and breakfasts. “It’s kind of a quieter town,” Kurt says. “The restaurants and shops are second to none, and it’s a favorite getaway with a lot of boaters on the Chesapeake.” For Tracy, a second-grade teacher in Spotsylvania County, St. Michaels is perfect for browsing boutiques for marine-chic décor to personalize Wild Hare. “I have had a lot of fun decorating,” she says. “It looks like a little

With all that you do with your Meridian, upkeep is an important concern. An easy solution to your ride’s long-term success is the right paint to keep your boat in style and in tip-top shape throughout many seasons of adventure. For boaters seeking high-performance technology that lasts, there’s Micron Optima. The newly introduced Micron Optima bottom paint contains Micron Technology that has been successfully proven to withstand even the most challenging fouling conditions. water-based formulation, make clean-up simpler than ever. “Micron Optima delivers excellent multi-seasonal antifouling performance in the toughest fouling conditions,” says Interlux product manager Matthew Anzardo. “It's versatile and can be applied over most traditional solvent based paints.” Micron Optima paint, available in standard red, blue and black colors, gives your boat a smooth matte finish and multi-seasonal performance without need for mid-season maintenance. “I call it my chill place. I get on there and I don’t think about anything else. I can totally decompress. It’s good, clean therapy.” model home. I’m very sentimental, so I like to collect things that remind us of our adventures.” In fact, St. Michaels is where she first discovered their cherished motto on a decorative plaque. Owning a Meridian has opened many doors for Kurt and Tracy, including opportunities to meet other boaters at MarineMax outings, such as weekendlong events to St. Michaels, one of which the couple attended this past fall. The outing featured boat christenings, docktail parties and dinners where fellow water lovers could share in the camaraderie of being part of the larger MarineMax family.

“The people are so genuine and fun,” Tracy says. “We all have the same mindset and good attitudes. There ’s no drama. We have made friends with some very authentic people.” Kurt adds: “With MarineMax, you wind up with lifelong friends rather than just a salesman who sells you a product and moves on.” Soon, the Kaufmans will move Wild Hare south for a spell to Solomons Island, where the Chesapeake and the Patuxent River meet in Calvert County, Maryland. Then they’re planning on moving it down to Florida’s east coast for a few months over the winter. “My plan is to never have to winterize the boat,” Kurt says with a laugh. For Tracy, simply being onboard delivers all the fun she needs. Whether heading to a new place or sticking around old haunts, as long as she ’s on boating time, she’s happy. “I call it my chill place,” she says. “I get on there and I don’t think about anything else. I can totally decompress. It’s good, clean therapy.”

CHARMED IN CHARLESTON Written by Alexa M. Poteet | Photography provided by Chris & Cami Photography

While Shakespeare cautioned against too much of a good thing, Mae West took the opposite stance: “Too much of a good thing can be wonderful.” Count Sarah and Ray Hilton in the second camp. “The 441 is our fifth boat and our third Meridian,” Ray says. “The yachts are so livable. We love them.”

ALL IN THE FAMILY

Sarah and Ray Hilton (above) love their Meridian for its ample room to fit their kids and grandkids.

“The Meridians just have the most livable layout. They fit our family, our kids and grandkids.” The couple ’s 441 Sedan Bridge is named Sarah Ann for Ray’s bride of many years. “We ’ve been married since we were teenagers,” Sarah smiles. Perhaps fittingly, the Hiltons live in romantic Charleston, the land of Spanish moss and horse-drawn carriages. After serving in the military, Ray decided to take up study at dental school in South Carolina. Today, he and Sarah work together—he as the doc, she as the office assistant— at their own practice, Hilton Dental. One might think Sarah and Ray were always raised on boating, given their love for cruising. But, although Ray’s dad always enjoyed boats, the couple ’s on-water life began largely after they got married. The military fates found them living near the water when they were stationed in Groton, Connecticut, and Miami, piquing their interest in the cruising lifestyle. After their move to Charleston, the couple started frequenting local boat shows where they became acquainted with Meridians. They were deeply impressed with the comfort and layout of the yachts.

Soon enough, these boat show visits led them to local Meridian Yachts dealer Rick Hall of Hall Marine. “We ’ve bought all of our Meridians from Hall, so we ’ve worked with them for many years now,” Ray says. “They have just taken good care of us. They know their products, and the service is amazing.” As for why a Meridian, the answer is bound up with their ever-expanding family. “The Meridians just have the most livable layout,” Sarah says. “They fit our family, our kids and grandkids.” Lucky for those kids and grandkids, they live close by and can enjoy the Meridian with Sarah and Ray. The Hiltons’ daughter, Denise, and her husband, Chadwick, live right in Charleston with their boys, Thomas (11) and Lee (6). The Hiltons’ son, David, and his wife, Melissa, live a stone ’s throw away in Charlotte with their three children, Jackson (7), Luke (4) and Anna Caroline (2). “The grandkids really like to spend the night on the boat. It’s an adventure for them,” Ray says.

“The 441 is great because we can take out just a couple of the kids or the whole family,” Sarah adds. “The little ones like to ‘claim’ the boat as theirs.” The grandkids aren’t the only ones who love staying on the boat. Sarah and Ray’s favorite memories are often formed onboard, including a cruise to Beaufort, South Carolina, for a family wedding. They cruised right down from Charleston, explored historic Main Street, famous for its leather goods, and tried some wonderful restaurants. With luck, they’ll have more time to pursue some of their bigger cruising dreams in the coming years. “It’s tough to take time off as a dentist,” Ray shares, “but we would love to take the Intracoastal all the way down to Florida or cruise to The Bahamas.” Their home of Charleston has limitless options itself for exploration, including historic churches, plantations and gardens around the city. Patriot Point Naval and Maritime Museum, one of their favorite attractions, features an aircraft carrier, destroyer and submarine that are open to the public. Visitors can also catch military reenactments and weapons demonstrations on special holidays. It’s

not all pomp and circumstance, though. The Hiltons enjoy the local baseball team, the Charleston RiverDogs—owned in part by actor Bill Murray—from the water too, as the stadium abuts the Ashley River. “The Meridian is almost like having a condo on the water,” Ray says. “The flybridge gives such excellent visibility. It’s totally heated and airconditioned. You can go up there on the hottest, swampiest day and still have an amazing time.” Sarah couldn’t agree more about their favorite feature. “It’s a wonderful place on the boat to eat and hang out. Everything you need is up on the bridge.” The Hiltons credit their 441 with helping them not only discover new places, but also meet new people, particularly at their home base, Ripley Yacht Club. “We’re really friendly with the folks at our marina,” Ray says. “Some people live on their boats. You get to be like neighbors. It’s really nice.” With a surplus of friends, a large family and endless cruising possibilities at home and beyond, Sarah and Ray can safely confirm: there ’s no such thing as too much of a good thing.

LOYAL LOOPERS Written by Alexa M. Poteet | Photography courtesy of Darlene Reuser

To understand Bruce and Darlene Reuser’s adventurous boating philosophy, one only need look as far as their marina arrangement. While the couple lives in Cloverdale, California, their beloved Meridian 580 Pilothouse, Miss Darlin II, calls New Johnsonville, Tennessee, home.

“Our marina’s location enables us just a two-week run to either Canada or the Bahamas,” Darlene gushes. “These days, we live on the boat for about six months a year. We are always exploring.” And the Reusers aren’t all talk. These two have accomplished more cruising over the last 10 years than many people ever dream of. As the “II” in Miss Darlin II implies, the 580 is the Reusers’ second Meridian. Bruce bought their first—in fact, the very first Meridian 459 off the line— after falling in love at the Seattle Meridian Yachts factory in 2007. He named it Miss Darlin for Darlene, and the couple accomplished their first major cruising adventure that year: America’s “Great Circle Loop.” For ambitious cruisers looking for a new challenge, the Great Circle Loop is a continuous waterway that encircles the eastern portion of North America, stretching all the way down to the Bahamas and up to Canada. It includes the Atlantic and Gulf Intracoastal waterways, the Great Lakes, the Canadian Heritage Canals and scores of smaller inland rivers through the South and Midwest. In short, it is an extremely varied and rewarding cruise. But Bruce and Darlene were ready for more. “After doing the Great Circle Loop, we wanted to find a Pilothouse to reduce our weather exposure,” Darlene says. “We already knew that Meridian gave us everything we wanted and more onboard.” After a visit to their local MarineMax, Miss Darlin II came into the Reusers’ lives, and the rest is history. The couple ’s love for cruising has only grown with their second yacht, and they’ve taken their 580 to many islands of the Bahamas, including The Abacos and The Exumas. Still, they longed for another great adventure. Two years ago they found it, embarking on the cruise of a lifetime: the “Down East Loop.” This spectacular cruise encompasses much of the Northeastern United States and Canada, with each cruiser making some detours for special sights of personal interest along the way. The Reusers count this loop as one of their favorite memories and gave Meridian Lines an inside perspective on this incredible adventure.

CIRCLE GAME

Bruce and Darlene Reuser and their fellow Meridian-owning friends traversed the Rideau Canal (top center) and passed the Statue of Liberty on their Down East Loop trip.

The couple kicked off their journey with a Meridian Owners Rendezvous in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, where they met up with other Meridian enthusiasts to prepare for the great trip North. Close pals Pete and Lynn Walton and their boat, Kiwi II, joined the Reusers for this loop journey. After catching up down south, the crew set off northward up the Intracoastal. The first stop on the docket was Kingston, Ontario, where everyone cruised up the Rideau Canal to Ottawa. A World Heritage Site, the Rideau did not disappoint. The group particularly enjoyed the climax of the Rideau, the Flight of Eight, an architecturally stunning stair-step set of locks. “Almost all of the locks are still operated by hand,” Darlene says. “It was a beautiful and relaxing trip.” From there, the friends cruised the Saint Lawrence River through Montreal and Quebec City. “The Saint Lawrence is a beautiful river—wide and deep, with a vast array of sea life, including seals and many types of whales,” Darlene says. “As you travel away from Quebec City, the river becomes more serene and peaceful as the towns and villages become few and far between.” The quiet stretch seemed to the Reusers like the perfect spot to admire some of the local animals. But, as with many adventures, there were some unexpected hiccups along the way.

The Great Circle Loop provides stunning views both urban (Quebec, above) and natural (Percé Rock, below left). South of the border, Darlene gets her hands on some lobster (below.)

“We left our marina in a light drizzle and took off for our next planned stop, which was the Saguenay Fjord,” Darlene shares. “By the time we arrived, the winds were howling with gusts up to 50 miles per hour. The Kiwi II found space at the marina, but Miss Darlin II had to find space in the crowded harbor. The next morning, our plan was to pull up the hook and do a little whale watching. You can imagine our surprise to find the anchor we dropped in 18 feet was now sitting in just 2 feet of water!” Thankfully, with a team effort and a few dips in the freezing water, the friends pulled into a deeper cove. Happily, the day turned out to be beautiful, and the group was treated to a show by local whales. From there, the group set out to Riviera de Madeline, a small French-speaking hamlet. They sampled some delicious poutine, and built a fire on land with new-found friends, enjoying s’mores under the stars. They cruised along the Gaspe Peninsula, taking pictures at storied Percé Rock, one of the most photographed natural rock formations in Canada. Onward still, they went to

30 | Meridian Lines Magazine

Prince Edward Island where they rented bikes, visited the community on which the novel “Anne of Green Gables” is based and took a side trip to lovely Bras D’Or Lake in Nova Scotia. The next stop, Halifax, was a favorite, and the Reusers recommend it to boaters who like a side of maritime history with their cruising. “The Maritime Museum there is really interesting with lots of facts and articles from the Halifax explosion and the Titanic,” Darlene says. Thankfully, the crew encountered no further trouble, and their return to the U.S. proved just as fun as their adventures abroad. “We crossed the Bay of Fundy and, as we approached the U.S. side, we could see that it was filled with lobster pots as far as you could see,” Darlene recalls. “After we cleared customs, we purchased lobsters from a fisherman on the dock and had a feast!” Bellies full, they worked their way down the coast, visiting Boston, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, Newport and, ultimately, New York City. For some, so much cruising might seem like a crazy challenge, but for the Reusers, that’s what spending time on the water is all about—making new friends and exploring new places.

Perhaps it comes as no surprise then that, as of press time, the Reusers are on the hook again. They have left their home marina on a cruise of their own design: down the Tennessee River to the Ohio, then on to the Mississippi. Reporting to Lines from the water, Darlene says, “The Mississippi River is wild and commercial! It is more of an adventure than a joy ride but it makes you feel like you are looking through a secret window that most people never see. We spent all day yesterday passing towboats pushing their barges with all the commodities that keep America moving.” Tonight, she reports, they’re in Mud Island, Memphis, enjoying cool blues and hot barbecue. What exciting mysteries the rest of this trip holds for the couple, no one can guess. Luckily, that’s exactly what Bruce and Darlene love about adventuring on their Meridian.

ADVENTURES ABOUND

The Reusers take things as they come, whether a skyline sunset or navigating canals and locks.

Raymarine (a part of FLIR, the world leader in thermal imaging technology) has developed one of the most advanced night vision cameras. The T Series camera creates pictures by detecting and displaying small changes in heat, rather than light. Every object, even ice, generates thermal energy, some of which might not be invisible to the naked eye. The Raymarine thermal night vision camera is capable of detecting that energy and turning it into easily understandable video. Enjoy enhanced visibility and situational awareness while boating at night, easier docking in low light, improved navigation, and increased boat security and surveillance.

A L L DAY, A L L N I G H T

Any time is the right time onboard your Meridian—even after the sun goes down and you are surrounded by the deep richness of the nighttime sky and the sound of rippling water. Raymarine®’s T Series thermal night vision camera with FLIR technology enhances navigational powers and adds confidence to your nights on the water.

32 | Meridian Lines Magazine

Plus, with a convenient thermal camera application available right from your Raymarine Multifunction Display home screen, you can control the system with the touch of a finger. The application can be displayed full-screen, or in a window alongside other navigation data such as electronic charts or radar. Boating at night has always been a unique experience. With Raymarine thermal night vision technology, it’s uniquely empowering as well. Visit raymarine.com for more information.

CAPE COD

Written by Jennifer Chesak | Photography by Robert Glover

For Boston-area residents Rand Currier and wife Paula Foley, there’s only one way to get to Cape Cod: by boat. The couple’s Meridian 441 Sedan Bridge, named the Designated Diver, provides access to numerous locations and experiences along the Massachusetts shoreline to fit their fun-loving lifestyle.

“I like the quiet of being in a whole other atmosphere and world. It’s not like anything you can describe until you’re there. Instead of sitting in five hours of traffic from Boston to the Cape, they can take their time whale watching and catching fish en route instead. “We entertain, we fish, we use it as a transport vehicle,” Rand says of the 441, which they purchased from Boston’s Russo Marine. “It just has everything we need. It’s perfectly set up.” Naturally, the couple often uses Designated Diver to go scuba diving. Rand has been a diver for most of his life and remembers his father taking him out at an early age. Paula got her certification about eight years ago, and the pair have been diving together ever since. “I like the quiet of

being in a whole other atmosphere and world,” Paula says. “It’s not like anything you can describe until you’re there.” Their favorite diving grounds near Rockport, Gloucester and Salem are prime for Paula’s favorite, lobster. But the three towns provide plenty of other recreation when not underwater. A hike through Rockport’s Halibut Point State Park offers quintessential New England views of old lighthouses and crashing waves. Gloucester is known for its beautiful vistas, as well as the artsy feel of its streets. Salem, the famous location of the 1692 witch trials, is the couple ’s favorite destination for “Haunted Happenings,” a month-long spooky Halloween celebration. When the couple heads south onboard Diver, they swap their scuba gear for kite surfing. Rand calls the stretch from Martha’s Vineyard to

Rand and Paula have no shortage of fun onboard their 441: kite surfing, diving, playing with their pups and taking in sunsets.

Provincetown “premium kite surfing” waters. P-town, as Provincetown is called, also has a lively arts and culture scene with galleries, theaters and shops selling artisanal and boho goods. The town caters to writers, performers and artists of all mediums with its host of residencies, workshops and colonies. Further out is Long Point, the peninsula off of P-town that creates Cape Cod’s famous hook. The couple ’s dogs, a Catahoula named Flo and an Australian Cattle Dog named Scuba, often join them on trips to the beach there. “I love the remoteness of Long Beach,” Paula says. “You get on the dunes and feel completely like it’s yours. It’s where we go when we want to unplug and be alone with the animals.”

“Wherever we go and whatever we do around the Cape, the Meridian is a great place to not set an alarm clock or have an agenda.” The dogs don’t even wait for the dinghy to hit the beach before they’re off and running. “I think they like to go to Provincetown and Long Beach more than we do,” Rand jokes. After an eventful day along the Massachusetts coast, Rand and Paula head back to Boston Harbor for quick access to restaurants and nightlife. They particularly enjoy the Seaport District, where they say dinner at Legal Sea Foods or the Empire Restaurant and Lounge is a must. “It’s a new, vibrant part of Boston,” Rand says. “They built a series of docks there, so it’s convenient.” Though often on the go, their end goal is always the same: relaxation. Sometimes, just being onboard their Meridian is all the escape they need. “Maybe we ’ll hang out at one of the islands and drop the fishing lines in,” Paula says. “Or we ’ll have appetizers and take in the sunset.” It doesn’t matter, she explains. Wherever they go and whatever they do around the Cape, “the Meridian is a great place to not set an alarm clock or have an agenda.”

BETTER WITH AGE A truly exceptional service refuses to be content with the way things are. Rather, it insists on always looking for ways to improve and develop offerings that are consistently bigger and better. NBOA Marine Insurance, which has served yacht owners for more than 30 years, has come up with a policy that proves it's far from resting on its laurels. The Ironshore Premier Watercraft Policy, developed in conjunction with Ironshore Indemnity Inc., provides coverage for boats valued up to $750,000—perfect for small vessels and larger pleasure yachts with its broad range of coverage options and competitively low premiums. The plan includes options such as Sport Fishing Endorsements, Occasional Charter, and Captain and Crew Liability. “In working with the team at Ironshore, we’ve put together a program that we believe is the best available option for the recreational boater out there today,” says Jeffrey Berndt, Senior Vice President at NBOA. “Having been involved in the marine insurance business for over 30 years, I think this is our finest effort.” For more information, call (800) 248-3512 or visit nboat.com/meridian. FLORIDA ISLANDS Written by Elli Thompson Purtell

Everyone wants to own a private island, but unless you're Johnny Depp or Leonardo DiCaprio, that dream is unlikely to become a reality. Luckily for Meridian owners, there is an alternative that just might top a personal island. Hop onboard your Meridian—a private and stunning haven itself—and cruise to one of several Florida islands reachable only by boat. Leave the crowds, tourists and traffic behind, and soak up true peace and quiet.

DRY TORTUGAS Seventy miles west of Key West, you’ll find 100-square miles of sparkling blue water and seven small islands. Dry Tortugas National Park’s most immediately recognizable feature is Fort Jefferson, a hexagonal brick fortress taking up one of the islands. The largest masonry structure in the Americas, Fort Jefferson saw active use until the 1930s. A guided tour takes about four hours and includes the opportunity to snorkel with provided equipment. If you’d rather bring your own snorkeling gear, the Dry Tortugas’ vibrant barrier reef offers several first-rate dive sites: the Windjammer, an iron-hulled ship that sank in 1901 after hitting the Loggerhead Reef; Texas Rock, which offers ideal photographing opportunities and plentiful sea life; Fort Jefferson’s moat wall, a magical experience at twilight; and Little Africa, a shallow, protected area suitable for kids and adults alike. Obtain a free boat permit for your Meridian at the park headquarters at Garden Key. drytortugasinfo.com ELLIOTT KEY The northernmost point of the Florida Keys, Elliott Key offers a sense of true remoteness (though a large open grass area is used for helicopter landing in case of emergency). Pineapple farming once thrived on the island, which now primarily hosts campers, picnickers and hikers who want to get away from it all. No general store and no garbage collection means guests must provide for themselves and leave the island as they found it. Dock your Meridian at any one of the harbor’s 36 slips, which have an overnight docking fee of $25, and spend a night under the stars. In the daylight hours, take a dip in the water from your yacht or head to the island’s designated beach area. Pets on a leash are permitted within Elliott Key’s developed areas. nps.gov/bisc/planyourvisit/elliottkey.htm

ANCLOTE KEY PRESERVE This getaway is a four-for-one deal. Anclote Key, North Anclote Bar, South Anclote Bar and Three Rooker Island lie three miles off of Tarpon Springs and offer 403 acres of stunning landscape surrounded by the blue-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. These northernmost barrier islands are home to an incredible array of beach-nesting birds. In fact, experts name Anclote Key Preserve among the state ’s top five sites for beach-nesting bird diversity, which hits its prime March through August. For a bit of history, head to Anclote Key lighthouse, which was declared a lighthouse reservation site in 1886 by President Grover Cleveland. floridastateparks.org/park/anclote-key CALADESI ISLAND This Gulf Coast beauty off the coast of Dunedin features sugar-white beaches ranked among the best in America. Lay out a towel to soak up the sun, dip your toes in the warm water or simply stay onboard your Meridian and take in the view: the skyline of St. Petersburg/Clearwater. Saltwater anglers can fish for snook, redfish, spotted sea trout, grouper, Spanish mackerel and more. The more adventurous at heart can dock at the island’s marina—which features electric and water hookups, a snack bar and a gift shop—and hike the 3-mile nature trail or kayak through the mangroves. floridastateparks.org/park/caladesi-island

STILTSVILLE IN BISCAYNE NATIONAL PARK Okay, Stiltsville isn’t exactly an island. But Meridian owners won’t want to miss this unique bit of history off the Atlantic Coast. In the early 1920s, several Floridians built a dozen or so get-away homes on the flats at the tip of Key Biscayne. Legend has it that many of these colorful shacks helped rum-runners smuggle in their goods during the Prohibition years. Eventually, this saltwater community of sorts grew to nearly 30 shacks, including one built by Captain Eddie “Crawfish” Walker, who sold bait, beer and chilau, his special crawfish chowder. Having weathered several hurricanes and years of debate between owners and the government, the smattering of perched homes is now managed by the Stiltsville Trust. You may take in the seven remaining painted beauties from the bow of your Meridian, but be sure to contact the Trust if you’d like to access or rent one of the homes. stiltsvilletrust.org
