At Home on the Water Perhaps Oz’s Dorothy was onto something. Whether it’s a warm bed you don’t want to leave in the morning, a pot of hot coffee or simply wherever your kids are, home is more than a place. It’s a feeling. And for those who cherish an on-water lifestyle, there’s no better home than a Meridian Yacht. Built with comfort in mind, these spacious yachts are made to be incredibly livable. Their plush bedrooms, superior finishes and fantastic outdoor zones are perfectly engineered by boaters to ensure every last inch of space maximizes your time on board. In this issue of Meridian Lines, we meet families who take their sense of home cruising to discover new destinations and new friends. A pilot who knows a thing or two about jetsetting gives us an inside look at Austin, Texas, from the bridge of his 391 on Lake Travis, while a 341 owner enjoys colonial Caribbean charm in Key West. Meridian Yachts are full of the latest technology, but that doesn’t have to preclude their proximity to history. One family’s 391 in historic Savannah, Georgia, brings them the best of both worlds. Are you looking to plan your next getaway? Stunning views of Manhattan highlight Jersey City, where a Meridian owner serves in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Many miles south, the barrier islands near St. Petersburg, Florida, provide sun-filled destinations for long-distance cruising. Wherever your travels take you, your Meridian Yacht will make you feel a sense of peace and ease. And you know what they say: There’s no place like home.

HILL COUNTRY Written by Jennifer Chesak | Photography by Mike Calabro
For a man who spends a lot of time in the sky, as does Southwest Airlines pilot Todd deClairmont, down time takes on a double meaning. But even when Todd’s logging strictly R&R hours, he likes to be in the captain’s seat.
The fly bridge cockpit of his Meridian 391 Sedan Bridge offers the perfect helm space for stunning views of Lake Travis in Texas Hill Country, just northwest of quaint and quirky Austin. “I wanted to transition to a bridge boat because I spend so much time on the lake,” Todd says. “I am spending the weekends out here, and the Meridian has so much living space.” Even though the hip 10-day SXSW (South By Southwest) music, film and interactive festival is going on this weekend in Austin, Todd has opted for the lake. “I like to get away from the crowds,” he says. The Meridian Yacht—and the promise of some sunshine—has also lured Todd’s daughter Brooke (22) and her friend Meghan Mercuro away from the hustle and bustle of the events to Lake Travis for the day. “The boat’s helped me really reconnect with her,” Todd says of his daughter, a recent college graduate. No one is missing out on a good party, however. The dock at Emerald Point Marina where Todd has his boat slip actually seems like a mini festival in the making. After a few days of much needed rain, the sun has once again graced the Lone Star State with its presence, and boaters are ready to take advantage. Friends wave and greet Todd, and before long, some have even made their way onboard. Joining him are slip neighbors Mike and Cheryl Praytor and Steve Bitonti. Todd doesn’t mind the extra company; after all, he ’s got plenty of seating and lounging room to accommodate the whole group.

He settles into the cockpit and maneuvers the boat toward Devil’s Cove, a well-known party spot on the lake. Once the anchor is set, the girls’ first priority is to get their dose of vitamin D. They lounge on the bow and let Todd play bartender. “I just love it here,” Todd says. “The weather is perfect for boating and getting outdoors.” In addition to spending time on Lake Travis, Todd is an avid road cyclist. He ’s completed four BP MS 150 rides, a spring cycling event from Houston to Austin that raises money to help fight multiple sclerosis. Austin is known to be a bike-friendly city and ranks in the top 15 listed in Bicycling magazine. The addition of 35 miles of bikeways in recent years has really improved urban cycling conditions. And outside city limits, various routes and farm-to-market roads in Hill Country will put any road cyclist’s quads to the test on serious climbs. Todd, it seems, is not one to sit still for long. After enjoying the good company and the sun, he ’s contemplating a swim. The girls have dipped their toes in and aren’t convinced. While Lake Travis warms up quite a bit

for summer swimming, spring water temps are still around 60 degrees. This will not deter Todd, but he knows he ’s got to rip off the proverbial Band-Aid. In a please-don’t-try-this-at-home move, he climbs to the bridge and then performs a graceful can opener. The girls shriek with laughter, and the rest of the crowd applauds his bravery. Once Todd’s goosebumps disappear, he reclaims his spot at the helm and takes the crew on a cruise around Lake Travis. The Lower Colorado River Authority built Mansfield Dam on the river in 1942, forming the 65-mile-long lake. The reservoir was created for flood control, but it has become one of the biggest recreational hot spots for the Austin area. Anglers will find catfish, sunfish and various species of bass. Scuba divers can enjoy Lake Travis at Windy Point Park where there are sunken sailboats and underwater metal sculptures depicting a shark and a turtle among other things. Visitors looking for an adrenaline rush can check out the moonlit zip line tours over the canyons and inlets. And for something way out of the ordinary, Hippie Hollow Park, with its beautiful beach, offers the opportunity for dipping and sunning sans suit if the mood strikes.

VITAMIN D Brooke de Clairmont and friend Meghan Mercuro soak up some rays on Brooke’s dad’s 391 near Austin, Texas.
Todd opts for a PG alternative, Texas-style barbecue back at the dock. The gleaming white Meridian stands out against the emerald waters, and other boaters turn their heads as the yacht once again enters the marina. The boat is an eye-catcher for sure, but Todd says it also has some down-to-earth qualities, like no-hassle maintenance. “I love the ease taking care of it,” he says. “It’s so easy to do most of the routine maintenance myself.” That said, Todd is thrilled to have his boat dealership, Sail & Ski Center, in his corner. “They’re fantastic. Their customer service is amazing. I’m not just a number; I’m a person. And I’m treated like that by everyone from the people in service to my sales guy, Roger Duffee.”

“I wanted to honor my dad. We both flew Mach 2.” With maintenance a breeze, Todd is free to spend more time hanging out with his daughter whenever she’s available for a boat ride. Some of his own best memories are of spending time on Lake Travis with his father. Todd’s dad used to take him out on the lake sailing for many years before he bought a powerboat. The Meridian pays homage to his father with its name, MACH 2. Both Todd and his father were in the United States Air Force. His dad flew an RF4 in the Vietnam era, and Todd flew F15s in Iraq, where he was stationed between the two Gulf Wars to enforce UN no-fly zones. “I wanted to honor my dad,” Todd says, “so I asked myself, ‘What is something unique that we both have in common?’ We both flew Mach 2.” Todd’s father spent 22 years on active duty in the Air Force, and Todd spent 15 years doing the same thing before completing another seven in the reserves. He began working for Southwest Airlines during that time, and he’s worked with the airline for 16 years. Todd can always be found manning something, whether it’s a plane, a boat or a grill. It’s not long before he ’s got the whole dock smelling like the best barbecue joint in all of Hill Country. He passes out brisket, ribs, turkey, coleslaw and potato salad to his dock mates, whom he calls his “lake family,” and no doubt the spread tastes like home. With good friends, good food and a beautiful yacht, it’s clear why this pilot chooses Emerald Point Marina as his favorite landing zone.
RENAISSANCE MAN When he’s not flying planes, Todd makes a mean slab of ribs and cruises Lake Travis.

ON, WISCONSIN! Written by Alexa M. Poteet
Tom Sager has seen a lot of pearly whites in his day, but none caught his eye quite like the Meridian 381. The retired dentist and his wife, Sharon, have always been avid boaters, but the shining 381 was a special step up from their previous boats. “We were at our marina near Sturgeon Bay when a salesman brought a new boat to the docks to show,” Tom says. “It was the Meridian.” The couple was smitten immediately and did a sea trial that day. “We loved the interior space and the huge bridge, as well as the 360-degree view from the cabin,” Tom says. The Wisconsin-natives closed on the 381 just a few days later with help from their dealership, SkipperBud’s, and their Meridian journey began.

Lifelong lovers of the outdoors, the Sagers christened their new yacht Heron after Sharon’s favorite bird of the Great Blue variety. On a typical day, the empty nesters cruise on Sturgeon Bay for lunch and on the way back, drop anchor in one of many small bays. “I launch the kayak for Sharon,” Tom says, “while I plan another trip across the lake.” Their days are filled with bird sightings, and on longer trips they like to trek over to the Michigan side of Lake Michigan, a well-loved trip they’ve been making since the 1980s. “In the summer, we feel Michigan is our second home,” says Tom. “After doing it for so many years, we ’re often approached by new boaters requesting to come along for their first crossing. After the trips, they are all smiles. No surprise there, boaters by nature are happy people.” For years, Tom and Sharon took their beloved Golden Retriever, Baxter, on these Michigan jaunts with them, and it appears the lovable pup became something of a local celebrity. While Baxter sadly passed away a few years ago, the Sagers felt joy when a local dock hand on their last Michigan trip asked as they pulled up “Where ’s Baxter?” Turns out, he didn’t know their names, but the cruising pup’s reputation had preceded him. “It’s one of my favorite boating memories,” Tom says.

BY THE BAY The Sagers enjoy cruising Sturgeon Bay, Green Bay and Lake Michigan near their Wisconsin home.
Another highlight happens once a season. “Our dream cruise happens every year when we take the boat out of storage and head to our dock in Little Sturgeon,” Tom says. “Right now our dream cruise is just 20 days away.” Their favorite aspect of Sturgeon Bay is the ability to cruise Green Bay and all the small-town marinas that line the Door County peninsula with ease. Tom was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, and his father was a store manager for Sears Roebuck & Co, a role which took him to many cities, including, eventually, Green Bay. “We loved the town and its roots, as well as the Packers,” Tom says. “Not to mention the outdoor activities and many nearby bodies of water. Our boating season is a short one, but we make good use of it.” Tom’s dad was a serious fisherman in his off time, so Tom was in boats at an early age. The same was true for Sharon: “Sharon’s folks in Milwaukee had a cottage on a small lake nearby where they spent many weekends fishing and waterskiing,” Tom says. “Thus our love of the water began.”
14 | Meridian Lines Magazine
And that love has continued. “When traveling we always request a room facing the water,” Tom says. “Then we walk the docks of the nearest marina.” The couple likes to visit Florida as well as Portland, Oregon, and Denver, Colorado, to see their two sons, Keith and Scott. Keith likes to cruise the Columbia River and Scott just bought a powerboat, which he ’ll keep in Door County near his parents’ place this summer. The whole family is looking forward to some summer cruises. But it’s not just family that keeps the Sagers busy. “We are always making new friends,” Tom says. “As new people come to the marina, there are new faces and names to remember every year.” Tom and Sharon have made some great new pals boating, and they’ve even converted some of their friends to Meridian loyalists too. “After my purchase, two of my boating friends followed my lead and they each bought a 381,” Tom says. “All three of us still own our original boats.” With luck, spring will bring great cruising opportunities for these “three amigos” and their incredible yachts.

JOY TO BEHOLD Written by Randy Hess | Photography by Richard Steinberger
Clearly Meridian Yachts are designed for the comfort of passengers, but Meridian’s engineers never lose sight of the needs of captains either. All Meridian models feature the option of joystick control for intuitive command during near-quarters maneuvering.
With the brilliant assist of joystick control, docking and negotiating marina traffic in tight fairways is easy, no matter how breezy. Facing forward, aft or sideways, captains will feel at one with their ship, whether sidling up to a dock, spinning in place, easing the bow or stern to port or starboard, backing into a tight slip or doing any combination of these at the same time. “Every Meridian model is available with an intuitive joystick control optimized for that boat and power combination, allowing captains a stress-free docking experience,” says Bill Gowan, the Brunswick Boat Group’s director of engineering. “Once you’ve tried low-speed maneuvering with a joystick, you’ll never want to be without one.” Place that intuitive joystick in the ergonomically perfect Meridian helm, and you have an environment where confidence comes easy. Built-in safety, brilliant aesthetics and complete control combine to make the 391 and 441 helms two of the very best in the industry. “Meridian engineers have continued to integrate the most advanced joystick technologies into the product line, offering several different solutions based upon preferred propulsion and pricing priorities,” Bill explains. “We are focused on providing control solutions that give owners flexibility in their chosen application.” The 391 Sedan Bridge provides proven integrated vessel control technology that manages both forward and aft thrusters with a single joystick. That it does this for a very reasonable cost beyond the base engine package is an additional benefit. The 441 Sedan Bridge offers the newly developed Cummins® Inboard Joystick with the 441’s base engines, taking advantage of cost and performance advantages gained by Meridian Yachts, and Cummins partnering to develop the new technology. Buyers who upgrade to the unmatched control and fuel efficiency of pod drives on their 441 will enjoy the spectacular Mercury Zeus® joystick.
18 | Meridian Lines Magazine
For all the joys in joystick control, surely none beat the ease they’ve contributed to captaining larger vessels, a task that previously required a lot of experience and technique. Those skills are still very useful, and it is good to understand what that clever system is doing for you, but joysticks have made vessel control so easy and intuitive that they have opened up largeboat ownership to a whole new community of boaters. The charms of Meridian Yacht ownership are manifest, and now they are simply available to more people. “Joysticks make yacht-style boating more appealing to owners intimidated by controlling such a large boat,” Bill says. “Once you reduce that barrier, you really get to see how many people are attracted to the cruising lifestyle.”

JERSEY BOYS Written by Alexa M. Poteet
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s paean to the American dream, The Great Gatsby, perhaps said it best of New York: “The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and beauty in the world.” The view of Manhattan from the water has always typified something quintessentially American and inspiring. For New Jerseyan Michael Greenstein and his partner, Adam Roebuck, this view of the City that Never Sleeps keeps them cruising around Manhattan on their Meridian 341.
The couple is living an American dream of their own. Michael is a Vice Flotilla Commander for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, while voice and acting coach Adam produces and directs performances on Broadway. Three children round out their brood—five-year-old twin girls, Josephine and Carmela, and three-year-old baby brother George. The family lives a stone ’s throw away from their Jersey City harbor in Watchung, New Jersey. “I love the view of Manhattan from my marina,” Michael says, “as well as the proximity to the Hudson River, New York Harbor, Long Island Sound and the Jersey Shore.”
24 | Meridian Lines Magazine
Their enviable location enables them to dip their toes in many different waterways near their New Jersey home. “We have friends in New York City, and I work in Jersey City,” says Michael, “so it’s always easy for guests to get on the boat, wherever we are. I can also pick up and drop people off in Manhattan.” The 341 Sedan Bridge is certainly a good way to travel in style. Perhaps Michael’s boating pedigree sheds light on the yacht’s name: Obsession. “I’m obsessed with boating,” Michael grins. In addition to his work with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Michael also manages the technology division of a search and consulting firm called Henderson Harbor Group and teaches for the Coast Guard as a state-certified boating-safety instructor. “I’m very active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and do many missions with our Meridian,” Michael says. “I also like to do a lot of my own maintenance and repairs.”
me.sp15.JerseyCity_Layout 1 4/2/15 3:51 PM Page 25
Michael always loved the water growing up and dreamed of having his own boat. “My parents had some friends with boats, and I went out once in a while. I always enjoyed it,” Michael says. Since that time, boating has become a huge part of his life. Obsession became his third boat after a chance meeting at a local boat show. “I saw it and immediately knew it was the boat I wanted,” Michael says. “I love piloting from the fly bridge and the bright, open space of the cabin.” Beyond Michael’s use of the boat for work, he finds plenty of time for socializing and relaxation. “We love to entertain family and friends as much as we can,” Michael says. “Adam and I enjoyed our boats before we had kids. And now the twins are at the point where we don’t have to worry so much.” It seems that a passion for water and boating runs in the family: Three-year-old George loves to “drive” the Meridian just like his dad. Both sets of grandparents like to come along to barbecue onboard and spend quality time with the family, too. When beautiful weather rolls in, the gang packs a picnic and cruises the Hudson River, soaking in the sights. “First-time guests love to go past the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and take in the spectacular Manhattan skyline,” Michael says. The family also likes to “dock and dine” at many of the waterside restaurants in the area, and even celebrated Michael’s grandmother’s 90th birthday onboard. She is turning 97 this year and looking forward to more time on the water.
DOUBLE TAKE Michael’s parents, Bonnie and Mark Greenstein, enjoy quality time on the 341 with their grandchildren.

NBOA has been protecting yacht owners for more than thirty years and understands the most nuanced aspects of insuring these legendary boats.
Michael says he has too many favorite boating memories to pick just one with the 341, but seeing the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks from the yacht holds a special place in his heart. “The Meridian pretty much defines our weekends during the season,” Michael says. “We have a short season to begin with, and you have a limited number of nice weekends. So we always try to make the most of it. We are out on the boat just about every weekend.” And less-than-stellar weather can’t stop this determined crew. Michael says, “Even when it’s raining, we ’ll go down just to hang out.” As their kids grow up, Michael and Adam are hoping to take longer cruises with the family. “We ’re trying to get to Belmar, which is just a few hours down the Jersey Shore,” Michael says. “The closest Jersey Shore beach is Sandy Hook, only about an hour.” Undoubtedly the kids will enjoy some time in the sand, and there ’ll be plenty of room for everyone to stretch out on the way. “People can’t believe it’s only a 36 foot boat,” Michael says. “It feels so roomy.” When the kids hit their growth spurts though, Michael has a master plan. “I’d like to trade up now that the family is growing, maybe a Meridian 391. I really love the 441, too. This has definitely become a lifestyle for us.” Michael might need to check with his grandmother before he makes any changes though; we hear she ’s counting on a birthday cruise with an Empire State view.

KEYS TO ADVENTURE Written by John Janowiak
Snipes Key is a remote island paradise in the back country of the Florida Keys, with crystal blue water and the whitest, cleanest sand imaginable. For Eric Haubert and his wife, Kristen Winters, it’s an easy day-trip away. From their home in the Old Town district of Key West, the couple and their two young daughters head to their nearby slip at Conch Harbor Marina, boarding their Meridian 341 Sedan Bridge and embarking on another day of outdoor family fun.
Key West holds many treasures for the family, but for beach outings, Eric and Kristen like to venture off the beaten path. “Owning a boat affords us the opportunity to be able to go and discover our own little secret beaches,” Kristen says. They often cruise 15 miles northeast toward the maze of mangrove islands that make up Snipes, where they’ll anchor 50 yards offshore and use a small inflatable boat with an outboard motor to reach a sandbar that reveals itself only during low tide. For the girls, Maribella (5) and Madeline (“Maddie”)(3), a day on the sandbar is always a thrill. “It’s a perfect playground for them to discover sea creatures and build sandcastles,” Kristen says. Eric brings a snorkel along for a close-up look at the sea life, but even from the shallow water around the sandbar, the girls can marvel at myriad critters: sea urchins, conchs, horseshoe crabs and sting rays. It’s a dreamy existence when you can call Key West home, and since the first of this year, these four have been living that very dream. The process began a little over four years ago, when the native Ohioans had their eyes peeled for an ideal yacht and a warm climate. For many reasons, they found themselves drawn to the Keys. It wasn’t just the perfect weather that attracted them to Key West in particular. Kristen was intrigued by the diversity of the people there; she liked the idea of exposing the girls to a melting pot of nationalities and languages at an early age. “The cultural diversity of Key West is pretty hard to experience in any other island with tropical weather still within the United States,” she says. She likens Key West to a big city in a small town. It has tons of amenities with wonderful restaurants and numerous shops within walking distance. “There ’s always something going on—a festival, an outdoor market, a movie in the park, parades,” she says. “It’s a great area if your goal is to spend more time outdoors. That was pretty important to us, so that’s why we made the choice.”

We love that the upstairs—the fly bridge—is so spacious, even on a boat that’s 36 feet long.
While exploring options in Key West, Eric was surprised to find slips available in the heart of Conch Harbor. “We figured there ’s no way we ’d ever be able to touch anything in there,” Eric says. “Sure enough, we end up owning this slip right in the middle of where anybody would want to be!” In June 2011, they acquired the slip and their yacht at the same time. “We love that the upstairs—the fly bridge—is so spacious, even on a boat that’s 36 feet long,” Eric says. “It’s extra living space. Being in the Keys, we have no problem using that all year round.” Eric also wanted a boat with at least two cabins where passengers could walk in and close the door behind them. “There are very few brands that allow that, and Meridian had the best layout of any that we looked at,” he says. When they bought the boat, Maribella was 18 months old and Maddie was still on the way. The new parents dreamed of having a child-friendly boat that could comfortably accommodate the whole family on long trips, and in that regard, the 341 has suited them ideally. Eric owns an investment advisory business in Ohio, so they tried to think of a finance-related moniker for the 341. Kristen suggested Mutual Fun, but they ended up selecting Eric’s brainchild, Asset Aloecation, referring to balmy days out in the sun and a little bit more.

“You can allocate your money, you can allocate your time and you can allocate your experiences,” Eric says. “I like to be a consumer of experiences, and this is our way of doing that.” They still keep a house on Indian Lake, about an hour northwest of Columbus, where they also have a small wakeboard boat. But now Eric’s commute goes the other way: While Kristen stays in Key West to care for the girls, he flies to Ohio about once a week to conduct business. Then, soon, he’s back to the Keys for more boating adventures. Since buying the boat, they’ve put about 3,000 nautical miles and 700 hours on it. Their longest trip was a 12-day journey up the west coast of Florida to Sarasota and back. Last summer, they made a 600-mile loop up Florida’s eastern coast, through the state via the Okeechobee Waterway, down the west coast and back to Key West. They cruised at a leisurely pace over a two-month period.
»
They also like to cruise other Florida destinations, including Marco Island, Captiva, Sanibel and Ft. Myers. On Captiva Island, they enjoy staying at their favorite hotel, the South Seas Island Resort. “It’s really great for families, and the marina is nice and clean,” Eric says. Heading back toward Key West from there, they cut straight across the Gulf, sometimes as far as 50 miles offshore. Eric and Kristen were both water babies, having both grown up around water and boats. Eric’s folks always had boats at their summer home on Lake Erie, and Kristen’s family owned a sailboat. The couple met through a mutual friend when Kristen was working in the fashion-design business, and now they’ve been married for 10 years. It was inevitable that they would someday own a boat like this. “It’s always been a dream of mine to have a boat big enough to live on,” Eric says. “We always talked about it, and we feel pretty lucky to have made it happen already.”

They’re thrilled that their girls are being exposed to such great experiences on the water from the start. Ask either girl what they want to do at any given time, and they’re bound to say they want to get on the boat. That response warms Eric’s heart, as that’s what he usually has in mind as well. A manatee lives at Conch Harbor Marina, and it’s fun to see the girls light up whenever it makes an appearance. Giant tarpons, as big as 60 pounds, also inhabit the marina. As the local charter-fishing boat returns after a day of fishing, the tarpon lie in wait until the fish scraps are thrown overboard for them to devour. Sitting up on the Meridian’s fly bridge, the girls like to watch and giggle as they take in a bird’s-eye view of the feeding frenzy. Young Maddie lays claim to being the most aquatic member of the family. “Maddie is probably more comfortable in the water than out,” Kristen says. “At 18 months she would swim under the water and amaze everybody, including us.” Her older sister already seems aware that she’s seeing things that few of her friends will ever encounter. At only five, Maribella has begun writing a journal of her experiences, complete with photos she’s taken herself. It’s full of manatees, sandcastles and good times with her family that she ’ll cherish for a lifetime.

SAVANNAH Written by Alexa M. Poteet
While James Bond’s martini was always “shaken, not stirred,” there is ongoing debate about the famous cocktail in the Estes family’s house. If the name of Neal and Barbara’s beloved Meridian 391 Olive or Twist is any indication, the matter hasn’t been settled yet.
But the Savannah, Georgia, residents say their yacht’s moniker is more than just a cheeky insight into their martini preferences—olive (her), twist (him). It’s also a play on words from the Dickensian classic Oliver Twist about the conflicting forces of good and evil. “In the novel, evil is trying to corrupt and exploit good,” Neal says, “but good wins out in the end. Barbara and I are constantly juggling our life to balance our business demands with our boating pleasures.” Neal was a VP in the paper-and-packing distribution industry for many years before deciding to leave the corporate grind. In 1994, he and Barbara purchased a commercial cleaning-supply and equipment-distribution company to become entrepreneurs. The purchase brought them to Savannah, and they’ve been hooked on this historic boating town ever since. “Savannah is the most wonderful place we have ever lived,” Neal says. “The city is small enough to be able to walk across the entire historic district, and it’s full of wonderful places to eat, drink and shop.” The Esteses lived in the historic center of the city until they built their dream home on Whitemarsh Island in 2007. Now with their Meridian, they can take the Savannah River right down to the riverfront, which has a public dock and historic riverwalk. “The entire Savannah area is surrounded by water,” Neal says. “So having a boat allows you to travel easily and enjoy the aquatic wildlife such as dolphins and birds.”

“Everything about the 391 is great. The interior and exterior are perfect for entertaining.” The Esteses caught the boating bug early. Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina, Neal enjoyed being near the water since he could walk. “Being raised around the water was just a normal activity in my family.” Same goes for Barbara. “She is a naturalist at heart,” Neal says, “and yells every time she spots a dolphin from the boat.” The couple had many boats over the years, mostly small, freshwater vessels, until discovering the world of saltwater cruising after their children grew up. “We left the boating world when our children were young,” Neal says, “and picked up the hobby again when we moved to Savannah.” After rediscovering their passion for boating, the Esteses began shopping for a bridge boat with more amenities so they could stay on the water longer. Neal found help in an unexpected place: an online community of Meridian Yacht owners. “I started posting questions about different models, and the responses were amazing. Since I had never owned a yacht-sized boat before, I had a certain amount of fear about handling the vessel and the maintenance requirements of a larger boat. I found that Meridian owners accepted me as a member of the community before I’d even bought one.” That strong sense of camaraderie and community among owners of these exceptional boats helped Neal decide a Meridian was perfect for his family. “Once we saw the 391, we were in love!” Neal says. “Everything about the 391 is great. The interior and exterior are perfect for entertaining.”
SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY The Esteses love hosting friends on their 391 in scenic Savannah. Some wild ponies greeted the couple on a recent cruise.
38 | Meridian Lines Magazine
Much to his delight, Neal has kept in good touch with the community of owners who first introduced him to Meridians. His online friends Tony and Arlene Gojevic have a Meridian 411 up in Vancouver, British Columbia, and the couples arranged a “boat swap” agreement for Barbara’s birthday this year. The Esteses used the 411 for a week to cruise the Vancouver area and up into the Alaskan Straits. “It was a fantastic trip,” Neal says. “Tony and Arlene have a credit for anytime they want to visit Savannah and use our 391 for a week.” Lucky for Tony and Arlene, there is no limit to cruising possibilities in the Savannah area either. The region boasts easy access to Hilton Head, Tybee Island, Charleston and more.
me.sp15.savannah_Layout 1 4/2/15 3:53 PM Page 39
The 391 doesn’t just entertain friends though. The Esteses host their family aboard the boat too. Neal and Barbara’s daughter, Sarah, her husband, Mark, and their two young sons, Graham (9) and Banks (2), love joining the rest of the family on the yacht. Sarah’s family lives on Johns Island just south of Charleston, and Neal and Barbara stay at a local marina only a few minutes from their daughter’s house when they visit. While Graham is an old salt at the tender age of nine, Banks is just getting his sea legs. Neal and Barbara can’t wait to show him the ropes. In the coming months, they’re planning a cruise to Beaufort, South Carolina, then Charleston and Kiawah Island to take the kids cruising when school is out for the summer. As for favorite memories with the boat, the Esteses cherished spending a recent night on the hook at Cumberland Island, Georgia. “Cumberland is a protected wildlife area and is spectacular,” Neal says. “The first morning when we woke up there was a group of wild ponies on the shore just grazing for their breakfast. It was amazing.” Nature-lover Barbara was thrilled. Daufuskie Island is also a favorite spot to visit that would be a lot less accessible without their 391. Looking toward the future, the couple plans to sell their business and retire in early 2016, so they’ll have more time on the yacht. “Our dream cruise would be to the Florida Keys one winter or the islands of Maine one summer,” Neal says. With luck, retiring will give these water lovers ample time to cruise wherever they desire on Olive or Twist.

TWIST AND SHOUT Olive or Twist allows the Esteses to boat directly to Savannah from their home on Whitemarch Island.
Until then, though, the Esteses are pretty happy with their current arrangement. “Savannah weather allows us to use the boat all year,” Neal says. “There is no ‘down time.’” And they don’t plan to slow down on entertaining in this Southern charmer where boating season never ends. “Meridian Yachts are always welcome at our dock,” Neal says. “Savannah is the headquarters for Southern hospitality, and we are always ready to host fellow boaters.” And as long as prospective guests bring both olives and lemon twists, they’re certain to find a warm reception.
A TOAST TO CRUISING It’s the small things that make your journey all the more rewarding. On a Meridian Yacht, the single malt Scotch whisky tastes better because you’ve chosen Glenfiddich, a fifth-generation family-owned distillery from Scotland in the business of preserving the tradition of craft. The world’s most awarded single malt Scotch whisky, Glenfiddich was founded by William Grant in 1886 and retains its rich history through subtle gestures. Techniques are passed down, a father’s careful lessons are taught generation after generation, and a single malt is forged that is so sensational it was the first to venture outside of Scotland’s markets. Celebrate those little things that make a difference with Glenfiddich’s own Gran Reserva variant, a single
malt Scotch whisky aged for 21 years in American oak casks and then finished for four months in casks infused with a custom blend of Gran Reserva Rum. This release begins with its velvety texture as sweet and spicy notes fade seamlessly into a long, warm finish. And as you savor the last drops in your glass on the sun-soaked deck of your Meridian, that sweetness will remind you how the little things can make life extraordinary.

FLORIDA GULF COAST Written by Jennifer Chesak | Photographed by Robert Glover
The way the Draper family talks about how they use their 541 Meridian Yacht, one might think it was a do-it-all utility knife. It serves as their fishing machine, posh patio, taxi to waterside restaurants and mode of vacation transport—not to mention lodging upon arrival. Yet, thanks to the combination of chic Meridian style and Oksana Draper’s impeccable interior-decorating skills, the Drapers’ boat might be the swankiest vessel to grace Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Rick and Oksana Draper live in North Redington Beach, which is located on the stretch of barrier islands off of St. Petersburg, Florida. They live right on the water on Boca Ciega Bay and keep their Meridian in their backyard oasis. “During the afternoons we can sit and watch all the boats at a distance traveling the ICW,” says Rick. It’s a wonder the Drapers actually leave their plot of land, which they have transformed into a classy jungle-tiki paradise that could rival an exotic five-star resort. However, they profess they do use their boat, Oksana D, whenever they can for just about whatever they can. “We like everything about our Meridian,” Rick says. “It’s roomy, sporty looking and handles excellently on the water. It is like having our own personal ship without needing a captain or a crew.” Oksana releases the lines while Rick takes his place at the helm. The Drapers run a telecommunications business, GD MUX Telecom Inc., out of their home. Their daughter Kristina Oczkos, who lives in New Jersey, also works for the company. She recently gave birth to the Drapers’ first grandchild, Aleksandra. Kristina and Aleksandra are spending some time with grandma and grandpa in Florida, and Oksana’s mother, Valentina Berezhanskaya, is also visiting from St. Petersburg, Russia. As the family shoves away from the dock, they are keenly aware that it’s the first time they have all four generations onboard their new Meridian—it’s the perfect excuse for a sunset cruise. Rick and Oksana recently took delivery of the 541 after upgrading from a 441 to accommodate the new addition to the family. “The Meridian is her new rocking chair,” says Oksana, smiling at her granddaughter’s peaceful face. Indeed, Aleksandra has slipped into that blissful sleep it seems only babies can achieve. The Meridian Yacht serves as a relaxation tonic for the whole family, as well. “The boat is like therapy,” Oksana says. “It’s the only place we can all be together and not talk about work,” Rick adds. He inhales a deep breath of the salty air.

Kristina nods in agreement. “We ’re with each other a lot because of work, but the boat has a different way of bringing us together.” Most frequently the Drapers use their boat to venture to waterside restaurants in the area. “We visit every place that has a dock,” Oksana says. Docking in tight spots is never an issue thanks to the precision of the Zeus propulsion system. “We never have trouble,” Rick adds. Nearby Madeira Beach features John’s Pass, a fishing community and boardwalk with plenty to offer in regards to waterside dining. Rick points the bow in that direction, but he knows that this week’s spring breakers will have likely filled up the tables. The Drapers also call out their favorites like the Hula Bay Club in Tampa and the Salt Rock Grill in Indian Shores, located north of where they live. When they have more time at their disposal, coastal towns and islands provide mini vacation ports of call with amenity-filled resorts for more dining or shopping. In Sarasota the Drapers often visit the Marina Jack, and in St. Petersburg they head to the Vinoy Renaissance. When they get down to Captiva Island, they always go to the regal South Seas. “We have some of the most beautiful boating waters in Florida,” Rick says. He looks out at the horizon where the sun is just beginning its orange and violet light show. “There is always some event going on within a short boat or car trip all year round. And we have some of the whitest sand beaches you could ever imagine.” Anna Maria Island, located to the south of Tampa Bay, is a great nearby day trip spot for beachcombing. And Caladesi Island State Park, a barrier island north of Clearwater is also a Draper favorite for getting away from it all. The protected recreational locale is a good place for shelling, snorkeling and wildlife viewing.

Sometimes the Drapers leave the pristine beaches behind, however, and head 50 to 90 miles offshore. “Our Meridian is likely one of the most luxurious fishing boats on the water,” says Rick with a laugh. Oksana and her mother are avid decorators and couldn’t wait to take delivery of the new Meridian so they could put their personal stamp on it with sumptuous pillows and other accents. They spent weeks perusing catalogs and browsing stores to get the exact look they wanted. So it’s a bit of surprise to learn that they use their vessel for hardcore fishing excursions. But Rick takes pride in the fact that he hasn’t had to go to the fish market in two years because he and the gals can easily catch their limit in grouper and snapper. “My mother even caught a grouper,” says Oksana, “and she ’s 74 years old.” Both Rick and Oksana come from a fishing and boating background. “I had my first boat at 16 years old,” Rick explains. “I pretty much had a boat my whole life off and on, but they were all small pleasure or fishing boats. I just always am at peace on the water. When I get on the boat, I forget all about work, stress and all the day-to-day obstacles.” And Oksana, who grew up in Russia, used to fish with her dad on a small boat in the city of Khabarovsk.

destinations Taking the plunge and buying a yacht was a big step for the Drapers. The couple found their first Meridian, the 441 Sedan Bridge, at the Tampa boat show. They’d been to several shows, and as Oksana likes to say, “We just felt it was our boat.” Rick said that at first he was a little hesitant about learning to operate a larger vessel, but after Neil Plummer, his salesman at MarineMax Clearwater, assured him he would teach him how and help him get accustomed to yachting, he just felt really comfortable. “I can’t even imagine working with another company,” Rick says of MarineMax. That’s when Oksana chimes in and says, “I wish Neil could be our broker for everything, like our house, too!” After returning to their backyard slip, the Drapers wave down some neighbors to join them for dockside cocktails. As the group watches the sun sink into the Gulf, Rick flips on the boat’s underwater lights. The group lets out a collective sigh at the sight of another beautiful Florida sunset, but Rick’s eyes remain on his new yacht. “I always dreamed of having a boat like this,” he says. “And I’m going to enjoy every moment with it and my family.”
