s they begin to settle in as the new leaders in their grammar schools, eighth-grade students are also beginning the next phase of their educational journey as they consider their options for selecting a high school.

Brendan Fitzgerald, a senior in Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, also finds a similar atmosphere in the Monmouth County school, recently named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2017.

“My favorite part about CBA is the unique sense of close-knit community that the school offers. Nothing quite compares to being able to meet and know so many people,” he said.

During a recent high school visitation day for middle school students in Saint Paul School, Princeton, Gabriella Morabito, a sophomore, and junior Matthew Caccavale Jr., both from Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville, spoke to students about the faith development they receive in their high school.

Catholic high schools in the Diocese offer students a sound and innovative academic program, rooted in the teachings of Christ. Each year, graduates from these schools receive millions of dollars in scholarship monies to attend some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country.

While data supports the success of Catholic high schools, no one can promote the schools as well as those who attend them.

Felix Lopez, an 11th-grade student in Trenton Catholic Academy, Hamilton, describes his time in high school thus far as a unique experience. “We are one big family with how we support one another,” he shared.

Meghan DiMercurio, a junior in Villa Victoria Academy, West Trenton, concurs. “I would say that Villa Victoria Academy is a place where we are all family. Villa is like a second home and everyone, students and teachers, welcome you with open arms. Villa also provides the skills to help young women succeed in their journey of learning and of faith.”

Caccavale also spoke to the faithfilled atmosphere in Notre Dame High School.

“We can express our faith. In our classes and retreat experiences, like Kairos, it’s a great way to keep our Catholic faith strong,” Caccavale said.

Jane Pangilinan, a senior in Red Bank Catholic High School, recounted that she definitely feels more connected to her faith at RBC. “Your faith opens your eyes, and we then see things through the eyes of our faith. My years at RBC and my religion classes here have definitely brought me closer to God,” she shared.

Open houses ideal time to learn about

school communities

W

ith the excitement of going back to school just beginning to fade, high schools around the Diocese are looking ahead to next year and gearing up enthusiasm through their yearly open houses – a time when prospective students and their parents visit a high school to take a closer look at the place that could be the next step in their education.

Open houses typically run two or three hours on a Sunday afternoon or a weekday evening and introduce parents and their children to the building, academics and extracurricular programs – including athletics, arts, community service and a wide variety of clubs – that will be part of the student’s daily experience.

Teachers from every academic department, guidance counselors, administrators, current students and parents are on hand to answer visiting parents’ or students’ questions, ranging from course expectations to financial aid, and to defuse the anxiety that accompanies any child’s preparation of taking the next educational step.

Current students serving as ambassadors accompany a family on a tour of classrooms, science labs, the library, chapel and athletic field, where guests can see how well Catholic schools are keeping pace with educational demands of the 21st century.

For example, said Katelyn Venuto, director of admissions in Holy Cross Academy, Delran, “In our science labs, our guests will see a student working on an experiment. They will also see that every student at Holy Cross has ownership of a new laptop in the classroom.”

Innovation is also forefront in Donovan Catholic, Toms River. “Students will see STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics] projects in our science labs and visit Griffin TV, our television studio,” said the school’s principal, Dr. Edward Gere.

In some schools, a parent of a currently enrolled student joins in the walk to provide a parent’s perspective, too.

“We are here to partner with families,” said Laura Sarubbi, director of enrollment management in Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville. “One parent said to me, ‘The minute I walked in the door, I felt at home.’”

The presence of student ambassadors and parents allows families to make connections to each other, which some consider to be the crowning touch of an open house, school officials agreed.

Because of the student ambassadors, “Middle-schoolers can start to visualize themselves in the environment, so it’s not so overwhelming, and to start to see themselves in their high school career and how they will make their mark on the future,” Venuto said.

“Incoming parents praise the open house because of the positive energy and enthusiasm of our student ambassadors and teachers,” Gere said. “For many, it seals the deal.”

“We see it this way: they’re bringing their family to meet ours ... this will be their home.”

The concerted mission of the school’s professionals, its parents and students cultivates the sense of family, the administrators said, which becomes the event’s most effective selling point.

As the schools seek to enroll students from both Catholic and public schools, they also extend the invitation to non-Catholics.

“We welcome students of other faiths. It enriches student experience,” Gere said. “It is our response to the tone set by Pope Francis, which stresses the universality of the Catholic faith and its welcoming nature.”

Sarubbi agreed. “The teachings of Jesus Christ permeate all we believe: the hard work ethic, putting others first, respect for self, being of service to each other. Our students learn that here. Non-Catholics want their kids to be part of this community and tradition.”

Catholic education gives students tools to be successful in life, faith

E

ducation is the vehicle by which the world is driven to change. A Catholic high school education is essential because it is a system that is based on values, ethics and faith. Catholic secondary education is based on the Gospel teachings of peace and acceptance.

Parents who invest in Catholic education invest in their child’s future.

Catholic schools from Pre-K to grade 12 focus on educating the whole student: mind, body and spirit. Students who attend Catholic high schools are treated as individuals. The administrators and guidance staff begin the college preparation process from the first day of freshman year through senior year, providing students with information and helping them create a path to a successful post-secondary experience. Counselors encourage students to explore colleges and universities that fit their career and financial needs. Catholics high school students have been recognized yearly for their outstanding receipt of grants and scholarships each year to the top colleges and universities.

Sports and service are also essential components for creating a well-rounded young person who is prepared to accept the challenges of the real world.

Students are encouraged to participate in various sports programs, which have levels for all abilities, from freshman, to junior varsity to varsity. Students who are involved in sports learn about teamwork and become part of a com-

munity. The Catholic Athletes for Christ program teaches that God is present on and off the field, and students take great pride in being able to pray together before each game.

Catholic high schools also require students to complete community service, with a minimum of 30 hours to be completed in senior year. The community service programs organized by the high schools introduce students to the surrounding communities and help teenagers fulfill God’s call to help those in need. Teachers, administrators, coaches and staff are invited to join students in service. All students at all grade levels are asked to consider serving others both in and out of the school.

Celina intended to major in politics, but her advisor suggested a macroeconomics course, and she soon found herself drawn to other classes in the Busch School of Business and Economics. “I liked solving economics problems,” she says. Trinity Dalmazio, a junior in St. John Vianney High School, Holmdel, spoke of the opportunities provided to students when participating in extracurricular activities.

“SJV offers many different chances to participate in pretty much anything you’re interested in. I am a part of the Ambassadors Club, Creative Writing Club, choir, band, show choir and the school musicals,” she said. “Participating in all of these clubs and activities at SJV has truly helped me to make lifelong friendships, as well as showing me leadership and the value of commitment.

“I am also a member of the girls’ varsity tennis team. Being a part of a sports team at SJV has taught me the true value of working as a team, encouraging your peers, and being a true team player,” she said.

Support Systems While each school offers different academic programs and extracurricular activities, all the students agreed on the support they received from the teachers in the high schools.

“There are always people here to support us in our academics and extracurriculars,” Lopez said.

“They say these years go by fast and they are correct! The teachers are amazing and are always there to help,” Pangilinan said of the RBC staff.

Of the teachers in Villa Victoria, DiMercurio offered, “We can always confide in teachers and ask them for religious guidance. This devotion has kept me grounded and calm during a critical time in my emotional journey.”

Dalmazio shared the values that led her and her family to choose a Catholic high school.

“Going to a Catholic high school was very important to me and my family when deciding on a high school to attend,” she said. “Being able to achieve a quality education, at the same time as furthering my relationship with God, has truly been an amazing part of my life.”
