CARE MINISTRY

SHARING GOD’S CARE THROUGH FRIENDSHIP AND PRAYER Offering prayers for these individuals and their needs

Faith in Action We had 33 kids in week one and 46 kids in our second week of VBS. A total of 9 High School youth and 6 Middle School youth participating as counselors or counselors in training. We also had 8 different adults volunteering their time to help in one way or another through our first two weeks. The summer camps this year were the largest we have had in over a decade. We took over 40 people on our Mission Trip to the Navaho nation in NE Arizona and had 11 adults helping lead that mission. Our beach camp had 40 attenders and 6 adult leaders. God is doing some great work in our children and youth ministries. We are so thankful for the adult leaders and teachers who are listening to God's call to help lead our youth and put their Faith Into Action.

A Word From The Pastor By Pastor Don Lorfing Friends and Family of Good Samaritan,

Once there was a man who dared God to speak “Burn the bush like you did for Moses, God. And I will follow Collapse the walls like you did for Joshua, God And I will fight Still the waves like you did on Galilee, God And I will listen.” And so the man sat by a bush, near a wall, near the sea and waited for God to speak. And God heard the man, so God answered. He sent fire, not for a bush, but for a church. He brought down a wall, not of stone, but of sin. He stilled a storm, not of the sea, but of a soul. And God waited for the man to respond. And he waited.... And he waited... And he waited. But because the man was looking at bushes, not hearts; stones and not lives, seas and not souls, he decided that God had done nothing. Finally he looked to God and asked, Have you lost your power? And God looked at him and said, Have you lost your hearing? As we get close to the completion of our building expansion, I think it is very important for us to not lose our hearing. It has been God at work in the hearts and lives of many people that has made this project possible.

From the perspective of the staff and many other participants here at Good Samaritan, the building program has been a lot of work. Hundreds of hours of work and fundraising, and hundreds of details to deal with to get to this point. There is a very real sense of joy and relief as we near the finish line. However, if we for one minute start to forget that this building expansion is a gift and blessing from God, I think we are making a big mistake. This school and entry area expansion is not something we have done, but something that God has done through us. He has moved hearts to give above and beyond their regular offerings. He has empowered county workers and builders to move the project along. He has provided power and enthusiasm to the leadership and many others to put in the extra time and energy needed to deal with all the details. He has provided patience and perseverance when we hit roadblocks or disappointments. When we first considered this project, we prayed. We dared God to show us his power and we prayed long hours with the fervent hope that God would make it possible for us to expand our school. And God did. Not always in the way we hoped for or planned. But like the story above reminds us; God is always at work, just not in the ways we always expect or see. So I fight the temptation to pat myself on the back when I look at our beautiful new expansion, and instead remind myself and all of us to drop

to our knees and lift up prayers of thanks and acknowledgment. God is good, and God has made possible the growth and expansion not just of our campus, but of our ministry at Good Samaritan. The completion of a building project is a good time for rejoicing. Let us never forget, however, what we rejoice in. God's goodness, God's power, God's guidance. I look forward to all the ways God is going to continue to use this campus of Good Samaritan, old and new, for his purpose. I look forward to the sin Christ will overcome, to the hearts that will be changed, to the lives that will be improved, and to the way he will work through the servants hearts of so many people who call Good Samaritan Lutheran Church home. So join me in continuing to pray for the final bits and pieces of our expansion to be concluded. Join me in celebrating our expansion. And most of all, join me in rejoicing in all that God has done to get us to this place, and all that God will continue to do through Good Samaritan to reach this community with the love and good news of Jesus Christ. God's peace and blessings to you all, Your Fellow Servant in Christ, Pastor Don Lorfing

Youth Youth News

2nd Friday: August 8th; 6-8:30pm Join us for a fun time during our August 2nd Friday event. Sundays August 24th and 31st we will be splitting summer hot church in half with the middle school youth helping load backpacks on the 24th and high school helping put the backpacks together on the 31st. A great way to serve students less fortunate than ourselves, and

Tons of thanks to the youth who applied for and landed counseling and CIT jobs during VBS. To date you are doing an amazing job, as we deal with the largest number of kids we have ever had in our VBS program. Your dedication, energy, and care for the kids has been an inspiration. Thank you again for letting God work through you to make a difference in the lives of these younger kids.

give them a great gift. Sunday Sept. 10th Official start of the Fall programming for confirmation and Hot Church.

To those who knew and loved Clay Bronson, No one could ever have imagined that such a tragic event could happen to anyone we knew or especially to one of our own who loved our church and all its faithful. Clay was so elated when the youth elected him to be president of their group and he was diligent in reporting the activities and plans they had to the church council. When you elected him as the youngest member of our church council he was so surprised, honored, and dedicated to doing his best. He dreamed of helping our wonderful church reach out to many, many more in our community to know just how unique, welcoming,

and caring our faith family is. Clay’s love and devotion for our church, his friends and his Sunday school students were repaid by your loving consolation and love to his family through this trying time. We can never adequately thank all of you who worked so hard to make the vigil and the memorial for Clayton such a wonderful, memorable, and blessed event. The turnout to honor his memory was astounding to all his family and your prayers and comforting words are so appreciated. In consulting with Pastor Don as to where to use your generous donations to Clay’s memorial fund, we came to the conclusion that helping to redo the youth room with fresh paint and furnishings and purchasing desks for our new school annex would have been Clay’s

choices; so, that is how many of the funds will be allocated. We also decided that a portion of the funds will be donated in Clay’s name to the robotics class at Sierra Vista, an endeavor near and dear to his heart. Clay was one of a very few students who initiated the program a year ago. They were rewarded in their efforts by winning the Nevada title this year, which enabled them to represent Nevada at the world championship. Our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you wonderful friends for all your hard work, but especially for your prayers, love, and comfort. Please continue to keep Clay’s brother, Turner, in your prayers as Clay would have wished. With sincere gratitude, The Bronson Family

School Expansion

Landscape Installation

BUILDING UPDATE Well my friends, the work is finally completed. Our school and entry area expansion are done and now we are just waiting on final inspections and our certificate of occupancy. We hope to have these completed within a week or two and get all moved in to our wonderful new spaces. As we transition into our new God given digs I for one am so thankful to God for his incredible blessings and guidance which have led us to this point. Here is what the expansion has provided for our church community: 1. Seven more classrooms which will allow our school population to reach 250-300 students at any one time (That is up to 300 children and families for whom we will be able to provide a good education and reach with the Good News of Jesus Christ) 2. A much expanded entry area that will have a nice patio feel to it and will include an expanded coffee shop 3. Significant on campus storage 4. A new library space 5. An opportunity for our many on campus groups to spread out into new areas. Keep these final pieces of the inspection and transition in your prayers. As a congregation that is being truly blessed by God I would encourage you to also include a word of thanks in those prayers for all that God is doing to lead Good Samaritan church and school into a hopeful and prosperous future. Pastor Don

Stewardship Nugget

From (It's Friday but Sunday's Comin, Tony Campolo) "There is a great deal of evidence to support the thesis that we are heavily dependent upon what we choose to become. This is the Good News (which is what the word gospel means). We are not predetermined creatures. We can make decisions that can modify our behavior and make us into new creations. "Ultimately, a Christian is somebody who wants to become a new person and who realized that this is a possibility through committing his or her life to Christ and being willing to become whatever Christ wants them to be." Our decisions about financial stewardship help us to make that choice, then remake the choice when we lose our way in the wilderness of materialistic options that compete with God for the control of our attention and affections. Whenever you decide to give to support the ministries of God's church, may what you decide to give be enough to represent a growing commitment of your life to God. For when God looks at the bottom line of your commitment , he does not just see an amount. He sees your heart. We declare with our money the "worthship" of God-what God and the ministries of God are worth to us. What value does the amount of your giving say God has in your life?

DAN SWEDEEN Dan has joined the Good Samaritan Ministry staff as our Campus Manager/ Custodian. A position he has been interested in since 2011. Dan is married, has two daughters, and one granddaughter who just finished her first year at NAU and a grandson in High school. He has a host of life experiences under his belt from driving trucks, to 10 years as a police officer and investigator, to being a self employed business owner, to working for the LV Convention authority. Dan tells a story about when he was 7 years old in church. He threw a gum wrapper on the floor. The church caretaker Bessie Westfall, saw him do it and took him upstairs to the sanctuary. She asked him "What do you see?" Shrugging his shoulders he said "I see our church" to which she replied, "Yes, its our church, and we keep God's house clean!" That conversation imprinted on his memory enough to decide years later that when he retired he would like to retire to taking care of a church or school (now he gets to do both) so that he could feel as proud as Bessie Westfall did about her job in her later years. Even though Dan has been helping keep up our campus for many years as a volunteer, between long hours at LV conventions, we are glad that Good Samaritan can now be his primary focus. We welcome Dan onto our staff as our new Campus Manager/Custodian and pray that he takes great pride in helping our campus make a good first impression to the parents who bring their children to our school and to those who seek to call Good Samaritan their church home.

COULD YOU HELP US GET OUR CAMPUS READY FOR FALL? Could you volunteer a few hours a month to help our new campus manager/custodian Dan Swedeen, get our campus ready for the upcoming school season? As you can imagine, our campus gets a lot of use with our school, church, and many groups. As we get ready for the fall, we have a new building that needs some prep work and our regular campus needs a little extra TLC. We could use a few extra hands during the month of August to help get our
