Good Samaritan Lutheran Church (Giving - Sharing - Loving - Caring)
Mission Statement: Transforming lives and empowering people through Christ’s love. Up Coming Sermon Series:
Ever wished you could fix a thing or two about yourself? Well, good news— God isn’t finished with you yet! In fact, God is still working on all of us, to help us become more and more the people we were created to be. (continued on pg. 3)
As most of you are aware, Pastor Collette’s last day with us will be Sunday, September 1st. We will be hosting a reception in the courtyard for Pastor Collette between services on September 1st to celebrate her two years of ministry with us. Please keep her in your prayers and thoughts, and if she has touched your heart in any way be sure to set aside some time to thank her and let her know she will be missed. We wish Pastor Collette God’s guidance and strength as she moves on to the next phase of her life’s journey. May God be with Pastor Collette and with the congregation of Good Samaritan during this time of transition.

He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us” (2 Corinthians 1:4). “You need to go talk to your neighbor,” the Lord told Helen. Her neighbor’s husband had died a few weeks before that. She answered, “Lord,
I will be happy to cook a meal or bake for her, but please don’t ask me to talk to her.” But the Lord impressed her to go and she was obedient. She set some of her delicious home-baked pastries on a plate and, with fear and trembling, walked to her neighbor’s apartment. When the woman answered the door, Helen said to her, “I know what you are going through, my husband died several years ago.” The neighbor said, “Come in.” As soon as she entered, Helen noticed a Bible on the coffee table and knew she was in the home of a believer. She stayed and comforted her neighbor - one widow comforting a new widow. God comforts us when we go through struggles - so we can comfort others. Look around you today. Is there someone who needs your comfort?
Father, the journey You take us on is not only for our good, but so we can share with others how You strengthen and comfort us. Help us to be alert and obedient to the opportunities You provide for us to minister. Amen

As we get ready to begin construction on our school and entry area expansions that will help us build a firm foundation for faith and future, let us also take 5 weeks in God’s word to look at how God can do some groundbreaking in our lives, build a firm foundation, equip us with the proper tools to get the job done, and build windows that allow his light into our hearts while cleaning out the messes that so often accumulate. UNDER CONSTRUCTION will be great sermon series for anyone who thinks they still have some improving to do.

Change is one of the hardest things in life. There are a great number of jokes based on the old “how many people does it take to change a light bulb” – in this set of jokes each of the different church denominations have good-natured fun poked at them. For example: How many TV evangelists does it take to change a light bulb? One… But for the message of light to continue send in your donation today! How many Baptist does it take to change a light bulb? Nine… 1 to change the light bulb, 7 to form a committee on how to change the bulb and 1 to make a casserole. How many Pentecostals does it take to change a light bulb? Three… 1 to turn it and 2 to catch it when it falls. And of course… How many Lutherans does it take to change a light bulb? What? Change the light bulb? My grandmother donated that light bulb to the church 30 years ago! No matter how funny we might find these jokes there is truth in the fact that change is something we like to avoid. And when we are confronted with the need to change, we resist! By now, you have probably heard that I am leaving Good Samaritan effective September 1st. As I consider how my life will once again be undergoing a major change, I reflect on Peter and Paul, the two greatest Apostles and leaders of the early church. When they accepted Christ into their hearts and lives, they couldn’t possibly imagine the changes they would encounter! Peter went from being a poor fisherman to the rock on whom Christ built his church. And Paul’s life changed from being a persecutor of the church to the Apostles to the Gentiles, and the most prolific contributor to the New Testament! Change – it is a hard thing for everyone. No one wants to experience major change in their life. We fight it, we run from it, we hide… but change will find us – it is a part of life. And when we accept faith in Christ, change is to be expected. Peter and Paul experienced many changes after they encountered Christ – their lives were never the same and led to their martyrdom for Christ’s church. And today begins a time of change for all of us. I will be experiencing many changes and I know these changes (thanks to God’s mercy) will be for good, even it means leaving people I have grown to love, care for and respect. And you will all experience change. You have experienced this change before – and it will happen again. It isn’t easy – it will require the prayer and support of all of you working together to remember that Christ is the center of the church – not a pastor, not a building, not a program, or any individual person or group of people. I know this community will pull together and help one another to remain faithful to ministry in this community through Giving-Sharing-LovingCaring. God will give you faith, and God’s Spirit will keep you strong – just like God’s Spirit emboldened Peter and Paul to faithfully proclaim the good news of Christ Jesus. So, how many members of Good Samaritan Lutheran Church does it take to change a light bulb? All of them working together to share Christ’s light with the help of God and God’s Spirit dwelling in their hearts! Amen

A mother went to wake her son for church one Sunday morning. When she knocked on his door, he said, "I'm not going!" "Why not?" asked his mother. "I'll give you two good reasons," he said. "One, they don't like me. Two, I don't like them." His mother replied, "I'll give you two good reasons why YOU WILL go to church. One, you're 47 years old. Two, you're the pastor!"
Top Ten Reasons Eve Was Created 10. God was worried that Adam would frequently become lost in the garden because he would not ask for directions. 9. God knew that one day Adam would require someone to locate and hand him the remote. 8. God knew Adam would never go out and buy himself a new fig leaf when his wore out and would therefore need Eve to buy one for him. 7. God knew Adam would never be able to make a doctor, dentist or haircut appointment for himself. 6. God knew Adam would never remember which night to put the garbage on the curb. 5. God knew if the world was to be populated, men would never be able to handle the pain and discomfort of childbearing. 4. As the Keeper of the Garden, since he didn't have metal sheds or greenhouses, Adam would never remember where he left his tools. 3. Apparently, Adam needed someone to blame his troubles on when God caught him hiding in the garden. 2. As the Bible says, "It is not good for man to be alone!" And the #1 reason why God created Eve: 1. When God finished the creation of Adam, He stepped back, scratched His head and said, "I can do better than that!"
