As we are coming to the conclusion of both the Fall Leaves Backpack Campaign and the LSSN Peanut butter Drive, we want to thank all of you who have donated so graciously. Your contributions reach beyond our church walls into the community to help and aid children and families who are in need. What may seem like a small thing - $10 for a backpack & supplies or 1 more jar of PB at the store - can have significant meaning to those who receive these gifts. They will be reminded that we care about them and so does God.
!
So far, over 250 backpacks were filled and donated to Fall Leaves. Over 260 lbs. of PB were donated to LSSN, and $770 which equates to 2310 lbs giving us a total so far of about 2570 lbs of PB!

Thank You, Dan! We would like to celebrate the many years Dan Sheeran has served our congregation on Sept. 14, as he retires from the position of church organist. We appreciate his years of service, and beautiful music. "

Help us celebrate his retirement with a reception ! after the 8 am service.

As we kick off our Fall ministries you are going to be seeing this phrase a lot at Good Samaritan. It is short, easy to remember, and most of all gets to the heart of how the God instructs us to live our lives. During the leadership retreat in August your council and staff claimed this phrase as the Mission Statement for Good Samaritan in 2015 and maybe even beyond. During my college years in San Antonio, I used to work nights at Tony Roma's and mornings at the Hyatt hotel down on the river walk. One day as I was wandering around killing some time before my evening shift I found a really nice balcony that overlooked one of the busier areas of downtown San Antonio right by the Alamo. So I took my lunch up there and found a quiet secluded place where I could gaze out on the sea of people and watch them interact with one another and their surroundings. The square it overlooks has all kinds of opportunities for people to do stuff, from get a meal at a curbside vendor, to play in the grassy area, to shop. I showed my balcony to many of my coworkers, we all agreed it was a great little find. But we didn't get there very often, and when we did there was never anyone else present. The balcony is clearly visible from the square, and it's not that hard to get to. That's how I ended up there in the first
place. But it seemed that people were unwilling to take the extra effort to get to it. You have to walk through a narrow doorway and climb (there was no elevator) two flights of stairs. It's one of those, "we'll do that next time" kinds of places. My balcony is like a lot of our lives, I think; we never get around to the extra effort or time required to get to it. That is one of the reasons I like this Mission Statement. Living a life filled with love, and trying to truly make a difference is something most people plan to do, but along the way we kind of just get distracted and forget. The sad thing is, for many there is no "next time" because passing on a chance to "get there" is an overall attitude toward life rather than a single decision. We need a change of attitude not more opportunities. This is why, I think, Christ was so clear in the bible about this idea of living our lives connected to God in love, and living out that love by loving others and making a difference. They are the core concepts in the Great Commandment and Great Commission. "Jesus replied (the most important commandment in the law is) you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is equally important. Love your neighbor as yourself. The entire law and the teachings of the prophets are based on these two commandments." Matthew 23:37-40 (Just before he ascended Jesus told his disciples "I have been given all authority on heaven and on earth. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples all I have taught you." Matthew 28:18-20
Vo l u m e 3 9 I s s u e 9
You see these core teachings repeated again and again throughout scripture. Summed up in "Love God, Love People, Make a Difference" When you drill down into this phrase what you see is an invitation to live life to it's fullest. To really engage in the life you have been given and with the people you have been given. This is a weighty thing to think about. God is not calling someone else to love and to go, but you and me. To wrap yourself up in his love for you and then take the extra effort to go out into the world and share his loving creative presence. We are the means, we are the method, the delivery vehicles. God can use anyone, for sure, but he uses ordinary and sometimes not so ordinary people just like us to get things done. We are going to spend some time with this in the Fall, and find those creative and real ways to live life in the full way God intended us to live. So as I reflect on my balcony experiences and how they relate to God's desire for my life, it becomes clear that I need to stop thinking about doing and just get to it. Because love is never stationary. In the end love doesn't just keep thinking about it or keep planning for it. Simply put: love does. Love God, Love People, Make a Difference. Simple, short, and so very very important for how we are called to live our lives. God's love and power to you my friends Your Fellow Difference Maker in Christ Pastor Don Lorfing!

Lend A Hand! Could you volunteer a few hours a month to help our new campus manager/custodian Dan Swedeen, get our campus back to the excellent standards we like to maintain? As the school season settles in, and our groups make use of the various rooms on campus, much work is needed with cleaning, repairing, and maintenance. If you could lend a hand, please contact Dan Swedeen at 702-499-3818. Thank you for your consideration!
Walter Hoving Home for Women Annual Banquet Attention Good Samaritan Family
Good Sam has a table at this year’s Walter Hoving Home 4th Annual Banquet. The banquet is being help at The Orleans Hotel and Casino on September 25th at 6:30pm. We are looking to fill a table for 11 people and have 3 seats open. Are you interested in attending? If so please contact Ken Collins at 702-682-6800. Requests will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. Do not miss out this exciting evening to help the Walter Hoving Home continue to help women in our community. Attire is “dressy”. There will be a silent auction and raffle to help raise funds as well. This year’s guest speaker is Felicity Cunningham. (A star in your own right and also the wife of Randall Cunningham, retired NFL quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings.)
Stewardship
God Loves A Cheerful Giver
The four words that describe Good Samaritan so well are: Giving, Sharing, Loving and Caring. When you provide for God’s work to be carried out here through your monetary contributions you are “doing” these four things. Your gifts enable us (staff and volunteers) to do what God has called us to do. When we worship, reach out to our community, (the backpack ministry and peanut butter drives are but two examples), study the Bible, meet in small groups, visit the hospitals, teach kids during “Jesus time,” counsel, perform marriages, comfort the grieving and everything else; it is happening because of God’s will and your stewardship. The Bible says, “each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)
!
Knowing what our giving supports, how can we not be cheerful?
