Tips for helping dogs adjust as we return to work As more dog owners return to their offices and workplaces, all the Busters, Daisey’s and Poppies out there are wondering where their humans have gone. We spoke to specialists on dog behavior to learn how we can help our four-legged companions through this period of adjustment. After a year of lapping up quality time with their teleworking humans, our pups may find this shift back to the “old” normal to be pretty jarring. Especially if the dog in question is a COVID puppy and has never known a life when humans weren’t home all day. Dog-behavior specialists seem to agree that when it comes to helping dogs navigate this change, a slow and steady transition is key.
A lapse in housetraining or uncharacteristic behavior is no reason to punish them, and may simply be evidence that you’ve made the transition more quickly than they can tolerate. A dog’s separation anxiety is like a panic attack in humans. In this state, a dog is driven by pure fear, with no more power to think logically than a small child who has been separated from his parents. 6 classic signs of separation anxiety may include: 1. Excessive vocalization. 2. Regression in housetraining.
3. Destructive chewing, especially if it’s It will be important for people to start to set focused on exits, such as your door or aside scheduled alone time for their dogs now windows. so it is not such a dramatic change in schedule when people go back to work, 4. Refusal to eat. Starting with five to 10-minute absences and building up to one to two-hour absences is a good plan. Keep in mind that certain dog breeds are more prone to separation anxiety due to their genetics. Herding and guarding breeds, for instance, have been specifically bred to make them watchful of any potential changes in their surroundings, so they may get especially upset when one of the most important members of their flock — aka you — is no longer there.
5. Excessive drooling. 6. Self-injury, such as cutting his paws to dig through a crate or door. Independence training can help. Plan to take mini-breaks from your pet so he or she gets used to sometimes being alone. If possible, review Rover’s reactions remotely by using a nanny cam or GoPro.
Or you can place your laptop at dog level, start a Zoom call, duck into the garage and Shepherds, border collies, Rottweilers, boxers use your phone to observe how he’s — those are all dogs that have been doing, selected over centuries to notice changes in their environment. This will give you important information on how well you absence is being tolerated as At the same time, it’s important to respect their you build more absences into their days, individual personalities, as what calms one dog the dog should gradually learn to accept that sometimes you won’t be there, but you won’t necessarily soothe another. always will return home. 4
Re-establish “B.C.” schedule. If you aren’t returning to work for several weeks, now is the time to re-introduce your “Before-COVID” routine. This could mean adjusting wake-up times, bedtimes and feeding times to approximate the schedule you’ll use when working off site. It also might mean doing the things you normally do when preparing to leave the house — brushing teeth, putting on your coat, jingling keys — and then not leaving. In doing this, you’re normalizing these rituals and sounds so your dog doesn’t automatically equate them with being left. Make sure your pup is getting a good walk and playtime before you leave for work or when you come home. A long, retractable leash that allows the dog to zigzag, sniff and explore. This arrangement encourages dogs to “scent” and investigate their surroundings much like dogs do when roaming free, which is more stimulating to them.
Tapping into your dog’s love of “scenting” releases pheromones and keeps their brains and bodies busy, just like when they’re hunting in the wild. There are fun ways to replicate “hunting” in your home: •
Pour his morning kibble into a clean, plastic bottle drilled with multiple holes so kibble can drop through. Your pooch will have to roll and bat the bottle to get breakfast.
•
Make mealtime more stimulating by pouring his kibble into different cups or a tin, then "hiding" some of the filled cups with balls or toys.
•
Place small piles of kibble around the house, so they have to sniff and hunt for dinner. You can up the ante a bit by placing small, lightweight boxes over the food piles.
To crate or not to crate? Many dogs view • Buy or make your own “snuffle mat”: a their crate as a sanctuary. And yes, crates rug made of longer scraps of fabric under can keep dogs safe and out of mischief. Even which you can hide their treats. Or you so, not every dog has positive associations can fold up a towel, tucking in treats with with a crate. Remember to always make the each fold, for the pooch to explore and crate a place of treats and peaceful retreat vs. discover. punishment. If your pooch loves activity and has never met a mutt he didn’t like, consider enrolling him or her in doggie day care. However, large-scale day care isn’t for all dogs. Most dogs are dog-selective, meaning they don’t love every dog they meet, In those cases, consider a well-vetted, smaller-scale dog day care, where the operator watches a handful of dogs at a time. Connect with neighbors. If you’re lucky enough to have a trusted, dog-loving neighbor who works at home or has a dog who is great pals with your pet, consider asking them if they would mind giving Curly a noontime walk or play session to break up his day. Sweeten If a dog is harming himself in efforts to get out the deal with gift cards to a favorite shop or of a crate, don’t force the issue. Consult with by volunteering to walk their dog whenever your local vet immediately. they’re away. Bring out the boredom busters: A dog is less likely to get in trouble if they have to problem-solve for a reward. The Kong, that ubiquitous rubber dog toy that can be filled with treats that you can find in most super markets. It’s easy to fill and it’s easy for the dog to win the game so they don’t get frustrated.
Make your arrivals and departures calm and low-key, The more focus and energy focused on arrival and departures the more obvious it is when the owner goes. Seek professional help. If nothing seems to help your pup’s anxiety, consult your vet. 5
4 Money saving tips for this summer There are some obvious money saving strategies that probably have occurred to you already. For example, you could spend your holiday’s camping in a beautiful camping site instead of visiting a country and staying in a pricey hotel. But there are a variety of smaller-money-saving strategies you can try that will add up, too.
2. Let your laundry dry outside. If you can hang up laundry outside, let the sun and warm summer breeze do the drying for you. You’ll be amazed at how fresh your clothes smell once they’ve baked in the sun for a while. Even if you can’t hang up clothes outside, try using your dryer on a lower heat setting or only partially drying your shirts and letting them air dry the rest of the way.

Have a Plan for Summer Savings If you're saving money all summer, that's great, but it's important to have a plan for what you're stashing away. First, figure out what your goals are for saving. Do you want to grow your emergency fund? Save money to make upgrades to your home? Buy a car? Setting goals for savings can help you stay motivated to keep saving throughout the summer and beyond. Plan ahead for future home and garden projects. When summer begins to wind down, it is a perfect time to be on the lookout for season-ending sales. Landscape plants, tools, and other outdoor project materials tend to go on sale as people begin to look toward autumn and spending less time outside.
Next, think about where you want to keep your summer savings. It could be a high-yield savings account, we recommend speaking to a good financial advisor. Where you decide to save may tie into your savings goals and when you plan to use the money you're saving. Finally, begin planning for next summer's savings. Look back at the different ways you saved money over this summer. Use that as a guide to set new savings goals for the next year and challenge yourself to save even more.

Busiest week on record for local air ambulance crews Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) saw a record number of call-outs last week (12 –18 April) with the crew responding to 52 incidents across the week. The charity’s Critical Care Team bring the lifesaving skills of an emergency department direct to those in urgent need. Usually they respond to around five patients a day, however, last week saw that rise to more than seven a day on average, with Friday 16th seeing them respond to 11 incidents alone in a single day. GWAAC’s crew have remained right here and ready to respond throughout the whole of the COVID-19 pandemic, stepping up to support the NHS during the critical peak of the outbreak. During this time last year, the crew saw a significant drop in their call-outs, with just 77 incidents across the whole of April, but the recent ease in lockdown restrictions has seen numbers rise even higher than they were before the pandemic. In April 2019, the charity responded to 162 critically ill or injured patients, this year they are expecting a 20% increase on these figures, responding to an emergency every three hours on average this month so far. The team have seen a significant rise in trauma related incidents, with the charity normally experiencing a 50/50 split between medical and trauma emergencies. 8
Last week, 77% of call-outs were trauma related, including 13 road traffic collisions as well as falls, stabbings, and burns. The crew’s specialist skills are incredibly important as they enable them to perform procedures usually only found in an operating theatre at the side of the roadside. Over the last week, they have used a broad range of their pre-hospital emergency care skills. From emergency blood transfusions to performing open chest surgery or placing a critically ill patient on a ventilator, the crews worked hard to improve the chance of a positive outcome for patients not expected to make it to hospital alive. GWAAC receives no day-to-day funding from the NHS or Government and relies on the communities it serves to raise the money needed to remain operational. At the same time as the demands on their emergency response service picked up, the charity reopened their shop in Westbury-on-Trym, with the support of the local community bringing in a record £4,000 in sales over the first week – more than double what is usually expected. The charity are keen to say thank you to everyone who is supporting them in these times of high demand for their service and reduced income due to lack of normal fundraising activities. If you are interested in finding out more about your local air ambulance charity and the work they do in our region, visit www.gwaac.com.

Seven ways to improve the look and feel of your kitchen
1. Add lights under your upper cabinets. Good lighting can make a big difference. Not only will puck lights under your upper cabinets help you see what you’re doing, they can also be flicked on to set a different kind of mood. We love these LED lights from B&M Store, which can be ordered online and installed without any special hardwiring. Bonus: They come with a remote control!
2. Get a pretty floor mat. A pretty floor mat (or even a simple rug) can cover up unsightly flooring, liven up your space, and make things more comfy for you while you work. Interested? Check out Dunelm’s website for the latest trends, They also look like vintage rugs and feel like a mouse pad for your footsies.
3. Hang up a new piece of art. We’re huge fans of art in the kitchen. (Just keep it away from the sink or stove, if it’s pricey!) If you already have stuff hung up, consider rearranging it with other pieces from around the house. If art in the kitchen is new to you, give it a try. You can even lean a frame up against a wall (on a shelf or counter) if you want to try it without putting a nail in the wall. 10
4. Go through your junk drawer. Honestly, this could be fun! Take everything out of your junk drawer. Get rid of stuff you don’t need. Find new homes for things that don’t belong in there. And put the keepers back in a more organized way. Even with the drawer closed, you’ll feel much better about things whenever you walk into your kitchen.
5. Swap out your hardware. Designers call hardware “jewelry for your cabinets.” So it makes sense that swapping out knobs and hooks will give your kitchen a new look. They can be a bit pricey, but we love the look and quality of the options at The Range and John Lewis or your local DIY store.
7. Bring in some plants. Plants can do so much to transform a space! Steal a bunch from other rooms or order some online. (Yes, you can successfully order plants online!) If you’re shopping for some, we love the options at Cadbury Garden Centre.

6. Paint the walls. A lot of these sorts of lists will suggest painting your cabinets. We’ve done it and we can tell you that is NOT an easy task. (You can definitely do it, but it’s not as easy as the other things on this list.) Instead, we suggest just painting a wall or three.

Local Election News
The Bristol Liberal Democrats have launched their 2021 local election manifesto. It focuses on sustainability, better services and better governance for Bristol. We have an ambitious but achievable plan for Bristol, and a vote for us is a vote for open and effective governance, something that is sorely lacking from the current administration. Here are our key priorities: BUILD MORE HIGH QUALITY SUSTAINABLE HOMES The Bristol Lib Dems will make building high quality sustainable homes at the forefront of our administration. When we ran the Council from 2009-2012, our worst year of house building resulted in more homes than either of the Mayors’ best years. We will aim to build balanced communities, with social homes, houses for rent and for private sale, while pushing for the highest standards. FRANCHISE THE BUS SERVICE The Bristol Lib Dems will work with Stephen Williams as regional Mayor to ‘franchise’ the buses, which takes control from the bus companies and gives it to local people to set routes, times & costs. 12
This would result in better routes and cheaper fares, encouraging people from their cars, rather than forcing them out. END THE SEND CRISIS IN OUR SCHOOLS A Liberal Democrat council will ensure that the current Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) crisis is ended, and make sure that all SEND children have an Education, Heath & Care Plan in place before the 20 week deadline that the current administration has failed on. We will protect SEND children and their families from further pain. ENCOURAGE BETTER BUSINESS Our high streets and businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic, and they need our help to recover. The Bristol Lib Dems will back the campaign to scrap business rates and will set up small business zones for startups and social enterprises. We will work with businesses to reduce packaging and help them tackle climate change.
CLEAN OUR AIR The Bristol Lib Dems will invest in active travel routes and public transport to encourage people out of their cars, whilst also adjusting the Clean Air Zone to make sure it works for local residents, and doesn't have an adverse impact on poorer households. We will also plant 10 million trees over the next 20 years to improve air quality and tackle the climate and ecological emergency in Bristol. SCRAP THE BRISTOL MAYOR The Bristol Lib Dems will continue campaigning to scrap the role of directly elected Bristol Mayor, which has become unaccountable and undemocratic. We want to put power back into local communities and empower local democracy. We want to open up the council to make it less secretive and more accountable to you.

Calls for vulnerable to get vaccinated - including homeless, ethnic minorities and undocumented migrants The homeless, undocumented migrants and people from ethnic minority groups are being urged to have the COVID-19 vaccine to protect themselves and their communities. Deaths among homeless people increased by over a third last year and those from Black and Asian backgrounds are at greater risk of dying if they contract the virus. And almost half of migrants surveyed said they would be scared to access healthcare if they got sick during this pandemic. Charity worker Naseem Talukdar has been volunteering at the Easton Community Centre to encourage people who are ‘off the radar’ to come forward. Off the radar He said: “We are working to reach out to people who may be off the radar - yet because they move around a lot could be at high risk of spreading or catching infection.”
Naseem, who was involved with Feed the Homeless and has organised food deliveries to people sleeping rough during the pandemic, is using his connections to spread the word. Naseem, who is also the director for social responsibility and sustainability for campaign group UK Curry Connect, which was set up to raise awareness of skills shortages in the Asian catering industry, said: “We want to help vulnerable people, who also may have underlying medical issues.” High risk Dr Caroline Crentsil is a GP at The Orchard Medical Centre in Kingswood and Lead GP at the Haven, a primary care service for asylum seekers and refugees in Montpelier. She said: “Undocumented migrants are more likely to be exposed to COVID-19 infection due to their living and working conditions.
“But they are more likely to experience barriPeople from black and Asian groups are more ers to accessing healthcare, which can lead likely to die of COVID and tend to be more to undiagnosed and untreated conditions. exposed to the virus through customer-facing jobs. “Many are also from ethnic minorities. Fear and misinformation Migrants can register with their local GP and access free NHS primary healthcare without documentation. Dr Crentsil said: “Primary care is free for all and the Home Office cannot access GP healthcare records except in very rare circumstances, such as in relation to a serious crime.” She is also reassuring people they will be individually assessed and have an opportunity to discuss any risks before they have the vaccination. There are also many translated sources of reliable information available. She said: “There is some fear and suspicion around the COVID-19 vaccines, which is in part due to incorrect information. On the whole, the evidence shows us that the risks of catching COVID-19 outweigh the risks of the vaccines.” · If anyone has difficulty registering with a GP, they can contact support groups such as Red Cross, Bristol Refugee Rights, Doctors of the World.

Baggy trousers and slouchy jeans are back! Ten years ago, if you had asked anyone to put on a pair of jeans or trousers that weren't skin-tight, we'd have rolled our eyes in disgust. For what seemed like forever, we gave skinny jeans and leggings our undivided attention. That is, until one day when a light appeared at the end of the tunnel and saved us from another year of wearing pants that were uncomfortably tight. A decade and a handful of half-hearted trouser trends later, we've finally found a silhouette with the potential to rival the skinny jean era in a real way. Baggy pants, or as some people like to call them, puddle pants, have been on the rise for quite some time now, but it wasn't until they started popping up on every street style photograph. It was last year that the trend became crystal clear. A year later, they're back — and the options are better than ever. From slouchy, distressed denim to loose, extra-long trousers — check out offerings for the latest trends this year in baggy, slouchy and cool comfy jeans. From our fashion editor Molly

Bank Bristol Dan O’Regan, is a trained Barista. When I was first introduced to him I thought, “Great, someone who can make that parking charge disappear!” However that’s not what he does. This is what happens when you don’t read things properly. Dan is in the coffee business (not the law business) and has been his entire career. Working with coffee roasters such as Origin in Cornwall and Colonna based in Bath and Bristol. He’s also had the good fortune to work with Selfridges, Soho House and Society Cafe. All in all he’s got quite an impressive CV. Dan has spent the last five years competing in the UK Barista Championships (Not law school), qualifying as a finalist twice, and as a runner up in 2018. He is now ready to take his wealth of experience and his passion for coffee and food and open up his own coffee shop and eatery in Totterdown called Bank. His vision, is to create the very thing he as a customer would like to visit on a daily basis.
20
Offering, exceptional coffee and an exciting brunch menu he wants Bank to become the go to daytime place for everyones daily caffeine intake as well as a place to eat some great locally sourced, fresh and of course tasty food. During the evenings, Dan would like to move to a casual dining and bar vibe. Concentrating on sustainability and seasonality he hopes to work with some of the best food and drink producers around? in fact he has already announced that his tea will come from Canton Tea in Bristol, house beers from Lost and Grounded also in Bristol. And his coffee from Origin in Cornwall. With the South Gloucestershire countryside on his doorstep, I’m sure Dan won’t struggle to get the very finest, fresh produce. Bank is due to open soon in Totterdown. Dan and his team are really excited about opening and welcoming customers into Bristols newest place to be for food and drink. Head over to their social media page on Instagram to follow their progress and keep up to date with when they will be opening. @BankBristol Article by Peter Abraham Bristol based food critic

Dave Prowse died aged 85 last year following a short illness, having made his name playing the masked villain in A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi. In the wake of his passing, a host of his Star Wars-related possessions are going under the hammer in Bristol. Suitably, the auction is set to take place on May 4th. Included in the lots are his script for The Empire Strikes Back – with one particular scene removed to avoid spoilers – a piece of the cockpit from the Millennium Falcon, and a Darth Vader mask that the late actor is said to have worn at promotional events. The auction is set to take place at East Bristol Auctions, and auctioneer Andrew Stowe commented online: “When I was rummaging through the boxes from his house, every now and then I’d come across something special and it would send my brain racing. 22
In one box I found this Empire Strikes Back script, in another I found an actual piece of the Millennium Falcon, then a little deeper down I found a letter from Peter Cushing.” Andrew Stowe added that his “spine tingled” when he first saw it, and explained the reason behind the deleted scene. “The reveal – perhaps the most recognised moment in cinema history – was kept a big secret from most of the cast. As Dave Prowse’s lines would be over-dubbed by James Earl Jones, Dave wasn’t privy to the secret,” he said, “so instead, he was given alternate dialogue which is considerably less dramatic. But that in itself makes this a unique piece of history.” Some of the money raised from the auction is set to be donated to Alzheimer’s Research UK. In the wake of Dave Prowse’s death, tributes were paid from across the extended Star Wars universe and beyond. Mark Hamill tweeted: “So sad to hear David Prowse has passed. He was a kind man and much more than Darth Vader.” See the auction page here.

TURNOVER AT HOPEWELL DOUBLES IN TWO YEARS THANKS TO SUPERB DIGITAL A city sales and lettings agency has seen turnover double in two years thanks to an online campaign by a team of Bristol digital marketeers. Hopewell has opened new offices in Clifton Village alongside its Prince Street headquarters, to support growth which has seen turnover jump from £1.4m in 2018/19 to £3m in 2020/21. The success of the business, originally founded in 2014 by Maxwell Hope and Adam Kershaw, follows work done by Superb Digital, an online marketing agency based in Spike Island on Bristol’s Harbourside. A new website and domain migration, search engine optimisation, a locally-driven content marketing strategy and a link building programme have all reaped their rewards. The campaign has seen Hopewell consolidate two operating brands, including a shift away from the Airbnb platform to generate £700k of commission-free, direct bookings. The turnover increase has enabled Hopewell to set up new services and revenue streams, grow staff numbers from eight to 10 across the two sites. Future ambitions include Hopewell becoming a brand to rival well-known high street estate agents, starting in Bristol with a target of 200 short lease properties in the city. “Hopewell is a client that we like to shout about because, against the backdrop of a pandemic that has severely curtailed the market they operate in, they have stuck with us and weathered the storm,” said Paul Morris, managing director of Superb Digital. “Notwithstanding Max and Adam’s tenacity and acumen when it comes to creating a diverse lettings business that isn’t overly reliant on one type of revenue stream, we like to think that we have played our part in their ongoing growth and success.
24
“ When Max and Adam came to us in 2018, their business was 100 per cent reliant on Airbnb bookings. Today, direct bookings on short to medium term lets are now 22% of their total £3m revenue. That’s certainly some jump.” Max Hope, company owner at Hopewell, said: “We were becoming overly reliant on the Airbnb platform and it wasn’t a solid foundation for profit and flexibility, so we were keen to generate more business through our website. “We weren’t doing any other marketing so it was purely thanks to our investment with Superb Digital that we quickly found ourselves ranking very well for highly lucrative terms around lettings, serviced apartments and property management in Bristol. “Looking to the future we’ve never had a better website and this is something we can continue to keep building on. And, largely as a consequence of the time’s we’re living in, we’re now turning our attention onto the sales and long-term lets side of the business. “This is a highly competitive market, not without its challenges, but we have every faith that we can continue to make significant inroads in this market. “We look forward to continuing our fruitful relationship with the team at Superb Digital for years to come.”

Chocolate box gift for home owners New home buyers at The Chocolate Factory in Greenbank, Bristol will get a box of chocolate treats when they move in – thanks to the previous residents Elizabeth Shaw.
A total of 140 houses and apartments are being built for sale at the site in Greenbank, which has been derelict and unused since Elizabeth Shaw ceased production there and moved out in 2006. Generator Group South West is now creating a new community alongside the Bristol and Bath Railway Path with a public square, community facilities, local shop and workplaces alongside as well as the new homes. Some 85% of the first phase is now under offer with buyers set to move in within the next month. To mark the 140th anniversary of Elizabeth Shaw and its links to the site the chocolate makers have provided Generator South West with a selection of Elizabeth Shaw treats as a handover gift when they move in. Karen Crawford, Managing Director of Elizabeth Shaw, said: “We are delighted to see the regeneration work now going on at a pace at the old factory. The Greenbank community grew up around the chocolate factory and it was a big part of our history. 26
“In the lead up to our 140th year much changed for everyone in a very short space of time. We launched an online shop www.elizabethshaw.co.uk/shop during the pandemic to provide our shoppers with another way to buy our products and gift loved-ones from the comfort of their own home. This year, as we celebrate our 140th year, we are still proud to be a Bristol business and recognise our past in this way.” Mya Castillo, sales and marketing consultant for Generator South West, said: “It is a fantastic offer by Elizabeth Shaw to provide these wonderful boxes of their products. Some of the new homes will actually be inside former factory walls while others are newly created. “It will be exciting for the new residents of Greenbank to get a taste of the products that were made where they now live.” Just one three-bedroom home remains for sale on Co-Operation Road. The larger and 4-bedroom homes with parking are launching shortly. As of April 22 the marketing suite and visitor centre will be open Thursday to Monday. To make an appointment call 0117 374 6600 or email enquiries@chocolatefactorybristol.com For more information visit www.chocolatefactorybristol.com

The manor house pitches in for self-catering staycations
The Manor House has purchased a private cottage in the stunning village of Castle Combe to add a self-catering option to its already impressive line-up of bedrooms, suites and properties ahead of an expected summer of staycations. With overseas travel still uncertain for the remainder of this year and many people looking to stay in the UK for their annual holiday, the luxury Wiltshire hotel has purchased Baker’s Cottage to give a new dimension to its overnight offering. Now that self-catering breaks are permitted with one’s own household in line with the government’s roadmap out of lockdown restrictions and the trend in domestic travel bookings surging this summer, The Manor House quickly moved to capitalise and improve its offering. Baker’s Cottage will join Ludlow Cottage on the estate’s picturesque row of mews cottages, which is home to 29 bedrooms. 28
Each cottage has between one and five bedrooms, meaning the larger cottages are ideal for family bubbles. Ludlow Cottage is another luxurious suite with a four-poster bed and traditional beams on the mezzanine floor, with a bathroom, lounge and small kitchen on the ground floor and outside garden terrace to the rear. The estate’s golf lodge, which overlooks the 18th green and waterfall of its spectacular championship golf course, provides a further self-contained option, with easy outdoor access and space. The new cottage is a two-bedroom dog-friendly property with its own garden terrace, kitchen – with all cooking appliances – and lounge. Complete with a double size bedroom, twin bedroom, as well as a sofa bed available in the lounge, it is perfect for a relaxing family getaway – housing up to four adults, a child, a dog and a baby. The cottages give guests a real taste of Cotswold life, with beautiful walks, as well as the city of Bath just 30 minutes away.
They are available from £1,000 for threenight weekend or four-night midweek breaks, with a week’s stay starting at £1,400. The Waterfall Lodge is available from £129pp and includes one nights’ accommodation, breakfast and 36 holes. Avid golfers can enjoy one of the best courses in the South West, with the Peter Alliss and Clive Clark-designed 18-hole layout set amongst 365 acres of breathtaking rolling countryside – offering some of the most beautiful views which can be seen on an English golf course The luxury 14th-century stately hotel, home to a Michelin starred restaurant, al-fresco dining terraces and a dedicated gin bar, as well as the cosy 12th-century country pub which sits in the heart of the village, will both fully open on Monday, May 17, as part of the government’s next stage of easing restrictions – giving guests delightful dining options and further opulent accommodation alternatives.
General manager at The Manor House, Gaius Wyncoll, said: “Baker’s Cottage is a real coup for The Manor House. It’s a stunning property with lots of character and plenty of space for an entire family. “We are lucky enough to be situated in one of the most magnificent parts of the country and wanted to make sure we would appeal to everyone looking for a domestic getaway this summer. It is fantastic that we now have several options so that people can still escape after nearly a year of being cooped up at home.” The above packages are dependent on government restrictions and some reopening dates may change. www.exclusive.co.uk/the-manor-house

Independent PCC candidate pledges more support to tackle shoplifting and staff assaults John Smith, independent candidate in the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections, has pledged to assign additional resources to tackle shoplifting and assaults on staff, and to continue initiatives to support local businesses if elected on Thursday May 6. John says: “I worked with the Police and Crime Commissioner to set up the Avon and Somerset Business Crime Forum, which brought businesses and the police together to implement a Business Crime Strategy. This group has undoubtedly made progress but in my view additional resources for, and prioritisation of, business crime is needed to adequately address concerns.” If elected, John would prioritise business crime and address the following: The police need to encourage business crime reporting and recording so that an accurate picture of business crime across the area can be collated. Businesses must be encouraged to adopt prevention, deterrent and self-help measures. A Business Crime Prevention Campaign would be launched and work in partnership with members of the Business Crime Forum. The police should urgently review the current approach to shoplifting – called Operation Heron. Shoplifting is an important crime, one that can be linked to drug and alcohol dependency and more crime if not addressed. John would ask the police to reprioritise shoplifting prevention. 30
Police should focus on prolific acquisitive crime offenders through a carrot and stick approach, offering additional support for offenders that engage but swifter punishment for those that do not. The police to prioritise their response to violent crime, abuse and hate crime against retail staff. The Police must also work with national, regional and local colleagues to improve the response to cyber crime for businesses. The current national Action Fraud response, as well as regionally and locally, is not good enough and needs to improve. John added, “To some these crimes can seem low level, but they cause real distress to staff and real financial costs to businesses, so I would ensure they are and are seen to be a priority of Avon and Somerset Police if I am elected on 6 May.” John is hosting a virtual policy roundtable event on April 22 to discuss why the approach to business crime needs a rethink. The attendees include John Mayer from Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), Steve Bluff from Broadmead Bid, Gareth Williams from the Yeovil Crime Reduction Team, Paul Hannah from the Co-op and Keith Rundle from Bristol City Centre Bid. Elections for the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner are being held on Thursday May 6. John’s full manifesto can be viewed on https://www.johnsmith4pcc.com/.

Much-loved independent record shop joins Wapping Wharf Longwell Records, which has welcomed a long line of big-name and emerging musicians into its Keynsham shop over the years, is embarking on a new chapter with the launch of a shop at Wapping Wharf, Bristol. The popular harbourside neighbourhood will be the home of Longwell Records' second shop, stocking new and used vinyl records and t-shirts with designs by local artists including Oli T and Inkie. It is due to open in the coming weeks - date to be confirmed. Longwell Records' first shop opened in 2016 on Temple Street, Keynsham, with artists including Razorlight, Amber Run, Billy Nomates, Mike Peters, The Allergies, Phoxjaw and Jade Bird having performed there. Bristol-born Iain Aitchison, who grew up in Southmead and describes himself as "a lover of all things Bristol", said: "I'm really looking forward to becoming part of Wapping Wharf's very supportive independent community and bringing some added spice to an area that is already a fantastic location. I am hoping to bring some quite big names to our new home, making the most of the great relationships we have with many record labels." 36
Iain opened Longwell Records' shop in Keynsham after a 30 year-career in the NHS as a substance misuse worker and support worker, supporting people with learning disabilities. A EuroMillions lottery winner helped Iain launch his Keynsham shop, by offering him six months' worth of rent, after spotting his potential as a shopkeeper. "My shop has grown into something quite special; it's very inclusive and supportive of the local arts and music scene. We stock new and used vinyl with a great reputation for price and for our friendly approach. We know our customers by name, and vice versa, and often have conversations about things going on in their day-to-day life, a mutually supportive relationship." The new shop will be located in CARGO 2, at Wapping Wharf, the unit formerly home to ethical clothing shop Found Hea. Found Hea has closed its doors after three years to focus on its new venture with Fig 1 at Quakers Friars. Stuart Hatton, managing director at Umberslade, the developer behind Wapping Wharf, said: "We are thrilled to welcome Iain and his team to Wapping Wharf.
It's brilliant that they are bringing something completely new to the already eclectic mix of independent businesses that call the neighbourhood their home. We also wish Found Hea all the best with their exciting Quakers Friars venture and thank them for being a wonderful part of the community." Wapping Wharf is in the heart of Bristol's historical and cultural quarter, with its tree-lined pedestrian and cycle route, Gaol Ferry Steps, providing an important connection between south Bristol to the city centre. Now home to over 40 independent businesses, many of which are based within CARGO - a popular hub made of converted shipping containers, Wapping Wharf is home to some of the city's best independent restaurants, shop, cafes and lifestyle businesses.

£125 working from home tax relief
Did you know the government has recently made it much more easier for those working from home to claim tax relief worth up to £125 to help cover the extra costs of things such as stationery and some household bills. Current coronavirus advice across all UK nations is for people to work from home where possible, with many employees seeing some outgoings increase as a result. It’s possible to make claims for both the 2020-21 and 2021-22 tax years, which could mean a rebate of up to £250. How can I claim working from home tax relief?
For the next step, you simply state what date you started working from home. You’ll receive a rebate for the full year even if you don’t know when you’ll be going back to the office and even if you’ve only had to work from home for one day. The government has recently made it much easier for those working from home to claim tax relief worth up to £125 to help cover the extra costs of things such as stationery and some household bills.
The government’s microsite makes claiming tax relief pretty easy, but there are some eligibility criteria.
If your claim is successful, your PAYE tax code will be changed, which means you’ll be able to earn more before tax payments kick in. If you started working from home before 6 April 2020, this will take into account any tax relief owed for the 2019-20 tax year as well.
To have a claim, you must:
How much will you get?

BRISTOL’S GREEN CHARITIES
FareShare South West, Wildscreen, Bristol and Bath Parks Foundation and Avon Wildlife Trust are the four successful applicants to the Big Give Green Match Fund, a campaign for charities working on environmental issues as part of their core mission. With the four charities representing a variety of causes, here is a little more about what they do in case you are looking to make a charity donation that will go further this month: FareShare South West FareShare South West tackles food insecurity and hunger across the city and does this by simultaneously tackling the significant environmental issue: food waste. Every year more than 250,000 tonnes of food which is processed, packaged, and ready-to-eat is wasted by producers, manufacturers and retailers in the UK supply chain for reasons ranging from inaccurate demand forecasting, packaging errors, damage in transit or retailer rejections. FareShare South West provides a flexible and easy way of working together with food companies to ensure good quality, in-date surplus food never reaches landfill. The money raised will help the charity unlock more surplus food from local food businesses and grow their infrastructure to upscale redistribution by over 20% to their frontline partners, which include homeless shelters, women’s refuge centres, community centres, schools and other charities supporting working with the most vulnerable. Says Julian Mines, CEO of FareShare South West: “We know the overproduction of food is a key contributor to the decline in our environment and climate change. To think so much is wasted whilst thousands across our region go hungry is what drives me and my team. We’re delighted to have been accepted to the Big Give Green Match Fund as we’re determined to be part of the solution to the environmental challenges we face, whilst continuing to be a safety net for those facing hunger in the South West.

We rely on donations to run our operation, and so during this period of expansion, we hope our supporters will take this opportunity to see the impact of their donation doubled.” Donations: Unlocking surplus food in the South West (thebiggive.org.uk) Wildscreen Wildscreen strives to amplify authentic voices and support the filmmakers of the future by providing a platform and support for natural world storytelling that raises awareness of the chief issues facing ecosystems, endangered species and communities across the globe. One of the charity’s key missions is to increase industry accessibility by addressing barriers and nurturing the filmmakers and conservationists of the future. Sue Martineau, Interim CEO of Wildscreen says “The next generation of natural world storytellers have missed out on many opportunities this year as an impact of COVID-19, with talent from underrepresented groups in the industry being particularly affected. It is vital that we have more diverse representation to impact the global environmental narrative and increase the reach of these important messages. We are fundraising to support our highly accessible training and mentorship scheme that will provide opportunities, experience and equipment to emerging talent and empower them to tell original stories about nature. By using our incredible contacts within the international wildlife filmmaking community we are aiming to create programmes that will have a global reach. Donations: Wildscreen (thebiggive.org.uk)
Bristol and Bath Parks Foundation Bristol & Bath’s park groups & volunteers are the key ingredient in what it takes to make a good park great and the foundation is there to support them. These groups provide opportunities for the local community to come together, increase biodiversity & be active. The Foundation wants to raise funds to support the projects that are proving difficult to get off the ground due to lack of funds, including: sewing wildflower meadows, community gardening, exercise groups and more.
