Mikes letter

Welcome again my friends to another week and yet more uncertainty as to what will happen after the 2nd December regarding the restrictions that will be in place on the 3rd December.

Personally, I think if things continue the way they are we will be in one of the higher tiers once we come out of lockdown 2.0. But let’s not dwell on that for now and let’s focus on the vaccines that seem to be our savior at the moment. It cannot come quick enough as far as I am concerned. As my family is Currently in isolation as Lisa (My Wife) received a text last Thursday evening by the glorious NHS Track and Trace system as she is a career at a well known care home in Bedminster. The down side was the 20+ phone call so far asking for the as much information as possible. Okay! You might say, that’s fair enough isn’t it. Wrong! She was call by a different member of staff sometimes 3 times a day all asking for the same details as they are not allowed to share the information with each other. How silly is that, so my conclusion is, could this be the reason the numbers are going up? Due to miss communication or is it just us Bristolian’s thinking this whole thing is conspiracy. I will leave that up to you decide, as I don’t want to stir the pot. On another subject is everyone looking forward to the 5 days of Christmas as its been dubbed. I wonder if someone will create an advent calendar with 5 days on it rather the 24 days as I think the build up to the big day is looking bleak. But fingers crossed we will have a white Christmas and that families will return to some sort of normal this year.

Walking workout is good for your body The UK is largely populated with sedentary workers, we take less and less exercise. Yet one of the most simple forms is also the most effective - walking. There is evidence to suggest that regular brisk walks could be as good for us, if not better, than strenuous jogging. What does walking do to your body? Regular walking, like most aerobic activities, is great for you because cardio-vascular exercise strengthens the heart and lungs, overall increasing fitness. Together with healthy diet and other exercise plans, it can also help with weight loss and tone up muscles A sports science lecturer at the University of Exeter is a firm believer in the benefits of walking, and said: ‘It can improve muscle endurance as well as muscle strength, especially in the lower body. ‘It is also good for bones and improves the body’s cardiovascular system. It also helps boost circulation. Power-walking - keeping a brisk pace at moderate to high intensity - can burn the same amount of calories as running or jogging. So it is very useful for helping with weight loss ‘Because it is low impact, it does not have the same potential for injury as jogging or running. Yet it can offer all the benefits.’ 4

Walking helps to drain the lower legs of excess fluid and can help prevent varicose veins through the pumping action of the calf muscles. The increased supply of oxygen exercise promotes also gets rid of the waste products in the tissues. Because more people are able to walk at a consistent speed than run, it is a more beneficial form of tissue-cleansing, particularly for people over-50, As jogging can actually cause more problems.' Did you know walking is also better for the spine than running, as it puts less stress on the discs. As we are designed for constant movement, not sitting in cars or in front of computers, which causes negative pressures on our spinal cord. Regular walking is excellent for spinal discs, which receive minerals and vitamins through the pumping action it causes. The best thing is that you can see results from walking very quickly - although it depends on each person's individual level of fitness, age and how often and fast they are walking. What does it do to your feet? The main players in regular walking are, of course, your feet. And we don’t use them in the best way. Our feet were made for walking about. And that’s exactly what they should do as It’s the best way of exercising the 50-odd muscles we have in our feet.

How to do it best

How often should you do it?

A fitness trainer for the GMTV Inch Loss Beach regime, points out that although we learn to walk as infants, very few of us have continued to walk correctly.

Government health recommendations suggest we need to exercise for 30 minutes daily, for a minimum of five days a week. But you can split the walk into a couple of 15minute journeys each day or make up for lost time with an extra-long walk at the weekend.

For instance, a slight 'bounce' while walking not only slows you down, but also places a strain on joints. When taking a step, let the heel land first. If you think about how your body weight is distributed, it makes sense to land the foot in a heel-to-toe motion as you take the movement from heel towards the ball of the foot, try to make a slight rolling motion inwards. This will help to give you more power when you push off with your foot. The result will be a faster stride. Walking can burn just as many calories as jogging if you walk with a special technique. It’s called the race walking wiggle. If you walk with a slight swivel in your hips with each stride, it makes you move faster. Yes, it can make you look a little strange but, mile for mile, it uses the same calories as you would if you were jogging.'

Walking beats other forms of exercise as there are excellent strategies for boosting the amount you do. For example, getting off at an earlier bus-stop than your usual one will add on a two to three minute walk. That may not sound much, but if you do that twice a day, every day, it all adds up. Another great tip is walking up a flight of stairs instead of taking the lift. Even a brisk walk around the block for ten minutes in your lunch break contributes to your daily walking too. How to keep it up? Also there is psychological benefits to walking. When you walk, just like any other form of exercise, your body has a chemical release of serotonin, the natural feel good chemical.

Also maintaining your posture also makes a huge contribution in obtaining the maximum Also the release of endorphins, which are benefits from walking. walk tall and also holding the ribcage up and tummy muscles in. happy hormones, which is why people feel on a natural high at the end of an exercise session. Remembering how you feel should This means you get an additional midriff be an incentive for you to keep it up. However work-out while walking. Also it’s advised to linking up with a 'walking buddy' can also help squeeze your bottom in as you walk since with motivation. If you have a commitment to this tightens the gluteus maximus muscles. meet a friend for that walk, you are less likely Imagine you are holding a £50 note between to cancel. Where as if you are planning to walk on your own, it is often easier to make the cheeks, so that you achieve a firmer bottom and also get a more effective walking excuses and put it off. session.'

Destructive Plans for Brislington Brislington Liberal Democrats, Cllr. Jos Clark, Cllr. Tony Carey and Andrew Varney, recently held a meeting with the Bristol City Council Project Manager working on the A4 Bath Road corridor. Information regarding possible changes to the A4 and surrounding streets has been very hard to come by and we wanted to find out what the latest thinking was at City Hall. Unfortunately, it is pretty clear that under the current Labour administration, the future for our area looks pretty bleak. The Council are planning massive engineering and road building projects that may have a marginal benefit for commuters passing through our area, but will almost certainly have a huge detrimental impact on people who live in Brislington. The key change currently being worked on at City Hall is a one-way road up the former Brislington Railway Line from Sainsbury’s on Whitby Road to Tesco on Callington Road. This will destroy the wildlife habitat on the route, home to several protected species including slow worms, badgers and bats. The extra road capacity will also encourage more people to make more journeys by car, leading to an increase in congestion and a deterioration in our air quality. As if this weren’t bad enough, part of this scheme will involve the removal of the Sandy Park Road hump-back bridge and a new, busy crossroads installed in its place. The narrow Talbot Road hump-back bridge would also need to be removed and probably rebuilt, leading to massive travel disruption for many, many months.

6

All of this destruction and disruption would be taking place to facilitate the removal of the right turn from Brislington Hill onto West Town Lane in order to provide space for a bus lane heading into town. There are likely to be several more banned movements on and off the A4, which will speed up commuter traffic but make local journeys a lot more difficult. We were informed that work for this project could start as early as 2024. We find it hard to believe that any of this is being seriously considered when we have declared both a climate and ecological emergency. In addition, more and more people are working from home and no longer commuting and this trend is likely to continue. We are also being encouraged to walk and cycle as much as we can. This road scheme will not help with that aspiration. The only good news is, the Brislington Liberal Democrats have consistently opposed these plans for the last four years and we will continue to do so. Furthermore, our Bristol mayoral candidate, Mary Page, and our WECA candidate, Stephen Williams, (pictured above with Jos and Andrew) agree with us and if elected, have pledged to stop them. How to spot fake reviews online this Black Friday Let's be honest with each other, those crowds we used to see on Black Friday, with people cramming into shops at opening time and fighting over the latest bargain - they're not gonna happen this year. Although the signs suggest that the majority of us got over the Black Friday hype a few years ago. That being said many shops are still expected to offer deals online for the pre-Christmas sales event on 27 November. It’s been a difficult year for lots of retailers, who will be hoping Black Friday - and its bigger cousin Cyber Monday - will give them a much-needed boost. Useful tips for the best Black Friday deals But this all comes with a health warning if you’re buying online. Amazon is struggling to prevent fake reviews which can mislead shoppers this Black Friday. The consumer group looked at some of the most popular purchases, including tablets and phones, and found some review ratings were being manipulated. 8

Amazon did make an online statement to the claims saying it has clear policies that reviewers and sellers must stick to. In a online statement they said: “ it will suspend, ban, and take legal action against those who break the rules. We found a pair of headphones had 1,006 ratings and 4.8 stars despite only being on sale for six months - well above the average for an unknown brand. As well as false comments, some sellers have also manipulated the star-rating system to persuade people into a purchase. In the UK, Amazon is the main place people go for Black Friday shopping. A major online review companies research found 34% of consumers planned to buy something there this Black Friday, compared to 16% at John Lewis and 7% at Currys PC World. However fake reviews have been a problem on some of the biggest shopping sites including eBay, Facebook and TripAdvisor for years.

Other tactics online shops use is offering free gifts or vouchers in return for positive or five-star reviews - which is in breach of most online store selling policies.

So how do we spot a fake review this Black Friday?

Also another concern is about accounts being hacked to leave reviews, comments being transferred from different products and sellers pushing people to leave pictures.

1. Be sceptical. This is probably your best weapon, especially if there is an unusually high number of reviews compared to others in that category.

There appears to have been a rise in the amount of suspicious reviews on Amazon in the UK since March’s coronavirus lockdown, according to analysis site ReviewMeta the site has an online tool which checks for fakes and copies in a web address.

2. Read and read again. Look for the same language used in multiple reviews.

Their data suggested a 30% rise in the proportion of unnatural reviews on Amazon between March and August following the first coronavirus lockdown.

4. Be wary of products with lots of pictures or videos. Sellers can incentivise fake reviewers to encourage people to add photos and videos.

Here is some simple tips for checking up on fake reviews.

3. Brands you don’t know. If you don’t recognise the brand, check to see if it has its own legitimate-looking website, with clear contact details.

5. Report suspicious reviews to Amazon. Let them investigate before you buy.

MAMA BEAR’S CHILDREN SUPPORT CHILDREN IN NEED WITH LOCKDOWN-FRIENDLY FUN Children at Mama Bear’s Day Nursery and Pre-Schools across Bristol have had to get creative with their Children in Need fundraising efforts this year in order to abide by coronavirus rules.

“Every day was a dressing up day with a couple of crazy hair days thrown in as well. The nursery managers also organised a host of additional activities including arts and crafts, games and story time sessions.

Instead of the usual bake sales, raffles, teddy bear picnics and spare change collections, the tots have enjoyed pyjama days, crazy hair days, bear hunts and Pudsey crafts to mark the important cause.

“This charity has always been close to our hearts as it is all about helping children. We’re so pleased to have raised such a fantastic amount, especially under the circumstances of this year, and we hope it makes a small difference to those in need.”

And instead of donating cash parents and carers supported the charity via an online link raising over £1000.

Mama Bear’s offers high-quality, affordable care across the South West. Established in 2002 the group now includes 24 nursery settings in Bristol, Somerset and Devon which Tony Driffield, co-owner of the family-run are consistently rated by Ofsted as Good or Mama Bear’s group, said: “We are great supporters of Children in Need every year and Outstanding. each one of our nurseries took part in some activity to raise money for the charity, albeit in To donate visit https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/erica-cross2 a different way this year. Barratt and David Wilson Homes extend 5% deposit contribution scheme

A leading housebuilder in the West Country has this week extended its heartfelt thank you to NHS employees who have worked tirelessly to care for people during the Covid-19 pandemic this year. Barratt Developments, parent company of Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, launched a new NHS Deposit Contribution Scheme in May offering up to 5% to help NHS staff buy a new home. The same contribution is also available to members of the armed forces. Both schemes were due to close in December, but have now been extended to 18 June 2021 to give NHS workers, armed forces personnel and their families longer to benefit from the contribution of up to £15,000 towards buying any new Barratt or David Wilson home. Take up has been particularly high at Barratt and David Wilson Homes developments near hospitals and military bases in Bristol, Gloucestershire and Somerset. Since the scheme launched in the spring, a third of the homes reserved at Filwood Park, which is near South Bristol Community Hospital in Hengrove, have been sold with the NHS deposit contributions along with a third at Blackberry Park, Cadbury Heath. Over a third of the new homes reserved at Coat Grove, Martock which is near RNAS Yeovilton air base have been sold with the armed forces deposit contributions since the scheme launched in the spring. 12

Announcing the extension of the schemes across the country, David Thomas, chief executive of Barratt Developments, said: “Our Deposit Contribution Scheme has already helped 1,000 NHS workers to buy their own homes, saving them more than £10m in the process, but we want to continue to support vital NHS workers in the New Year so we’ve extended it for six more months until June 2021.” Ian Menham, West regional director for Barratt Developments, which is currently building approximately 2,000 homes in 36 new communities across the South West added: "We launched this scheme, which offers up to £15,000 towards a deposit, to express our deep gratitude to NHS workers in the West Country who have worked so tirelessly to support and protect our communities in the face of the Covid pandemic. We're pleased to be able to extend our offer, and our thanks, as their vital work continues into 2021." Sales centres on all Barratt and David Wilson Homes developments across Bristol, Gloucestershire and Somerset remain open for in person viewings by appointment only and for virtual appointments. A full range of Covid safety measures are in place. For more information on both the NHS and armed forces Deposit Contribution Scheme and booking a sales appointment on specific developments, visit www.barratthomes.co.uk

Bristol residents are being urged to share their views on council tax as part of the council’s annual budget setting for the next financial year. All local authorities must legally consult with residents about proposed changes to the budget which pays for essential services in the city. The COVID-19 pandemic has seen many more people needing council support, which has impacted the organisations finances. This includes help with council tax, business rates, business grants, providing food packages to people in need, food vouchers to children, and emergency accommodation and homelessness. Bristol City Council aims to avoid cutting any essential services however council tax may need to increase by a small amount to ensure these can continue to run.

“COVID-19 has touched everyone’s lives and this had led to a huge increase in people needing support from the council. For those that can afford to pay council tax, it is really important you continue to, and for those that can’t, we will help you. “I urge people to give their views on this consultation so we can balance the impact of any increase in council tax alongside the need to run services which are essential to residents.”

Options to increase council tax from April 2021 range from making no change at all to making a 3% increase to cover the cost of general council services such as supporting the elderly, education, children’s services, waste collection and recycling, street lighting, parks, road maintenance, libraries and homelessness. FAMILY LAWYERS SAY ACT NOW BEFORE DEADLINE

Family law experts are encouraging people to act now on their family legal matters ahead of the Brexit transition period ending on 31 December.

Anyone who might be affected by international family law issues around divorce, child maintenance or child custody is being urged to consider their position and begin proceedings before the deadline.

Hannah says to avoid uncertainty and a potential backlog of cases following the deadline, families should aim to issue proceedings or take steps to enforce orders before the cut off.

She said: “We have been assured that any proceedings or orders issued and made in the UK Courts before 31 December 2020 will be dealt with in the usual way, with EU law still applying, and will continue to be recognised and enforceable in the EU.

Design Print Distribution Group goes even greener with tree-planting scheme

We’re thrilled at Design Print Distribution Group to be boosting our green credentials by branching out into tree planting and tree care to support a forest charity. The team here in Bristol already use recycled or sustainably and ethically sourced paper and ink for our leaflets and flyers. Now we are going a step further by supporting Forest of Avon Trust, which promotes, plants and cares for trees and woodlands throughout the Forest of Avon area, in and around Bristol and Avon. Helping the community in and around Bristol

We have already made our first donation and the first ten trees will be planted and cared for in local woodlands from November 2020, on behalf of our clients. These clients include Bath Stone estate agents, Bristol-based garden rooms designer Cedar Spaces and JPM Beds of Exeter. “Forest of Avon Trust loves working with businesses who really care about their local area and also want to widen their overall sustainability,” says Alex Stone, the Trust’s Business and Partnerships Office.

We’re funding the planting and care of local trees for every ongoing client we take on, which could add up to 100 newly planted trees a year.

“Together, with a strong community of businesses, customers and charity work, we can greatly increase the positive impact we all make together on our local environment, trees and woodlands.

“We already support the community, by sponsoring some local football and cricket teams, and Bristol Pantomime Productions theatre group,” says our Managing Director Mike Ethridge.

Design Print Distribution Group’s commitment to supporting us and their wider green credentials as a company is very exciting. We look forward to seeing our partnership grow along with the trees!”

“We were looking to do something with more of an environmental focus, because when people think about leafleting, they think about the use of paper.

At Design Print Distribution Group, we specialise in door-to-door leafleting in major towns and cities from Swindon to Bristol, Bath and Cardiff, down to Plymouth and across to Exeter, also offering a graphic design and print service.

We always use paper from a sustainable source, or it is recycled, and our print is also sustainable and ethically sourced. Westerleigh Crematorium Supports Local Charities

Westerleigh Crematorium, near Bristol, is giving six local charities a total of £17,000 in donations, which it raised as part of its metal recycling scheme.

Luke said: “We have supported Children’s Hospice South West for many years with money from our metal recycling scheme, and staff were keen to continue this support.

With the consent of families, metals recovered during cremation are recycled and any money raised at each of the 34 crematoria and cemeteries nationwide operated by Westerleigh Group is used to support local worthy causes.

“This is third year we have supported the local branch of the Teenage Cancer Trust, and the second year we have supported the local branch of Bristol MIND.

Westerleigh Crematorium site manager Luke Dinsdale said: “All the charities were selected via a voting process involving all our staff, and the money was allocated based on votes. “All these organisations do such incredible work trying to enhance and make a positive difference to the lives of people in our local community who need some extra support, and it’s an honour to be able to provide them with some financial help.” Teenage Cancer Trust (South West) is receiving £3,500; Macmillan Cancer Support, Children’s Hospice South West, and Bristol MIND are reach receiving £3,000; Great Western Air Ambulance is receiving £2,500 and Avon & Somerset Search & Rescue is receiving £2,000. 24

“It is our second year of supporting Avon & Somerset Search & Rescue, which we have a personal connection to, as a member of our team, Steve Britton, volunteers in his freetime with this charity. “This is the first year we have voted for the Great Western Air Ambulance to receive a portion of the metal money, after it was suggested by a team member. “We have always supported the Macmillan Cancer Support coffee morning in the Willow Tree Café every September, which is always a popular event. “We particularly wanted to offer support this year because the Covid-19-enforced restrictions on hospitality venues would have meant that their coffee morning income was significantly reduced this year.”

Mortgage advisor waives fees for NHS and military

A mortgage advisor in Bristol is waiving broker fees for medical staff, military personnel and veterans - to thank ‘heroes serving community and country’. Matt Colley, who heads Moving Experience, wants to thank those who saved his children’s lives and cared for them in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). And the dad-of two, whose own father served in the RAF, is also donating money from their commission to two charities supporting a hospital in the city and the armed forces.nMatt, 45, from Fishponds, said: “I’m lucky to have two healthy boys, thanks to the skill and dedication of the team at Southmead Hospital. “I am also grateful to the military community who serve us in many ways, including setting up hospitals during this pandemic. This is our way to thank the heroes serving our community and country.” The team at Moving Experience, which also provides protection cover for events such as sickness and death, is fundraising for Southmead Hospital Charity and SSAFA – The Armed Forces Charity, that supports Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and their Families. Life-threatening complications at birth Matt’s first son was 10 days overdue and labour was induced. But he was in the back-to-back position, with the back of his head against his mother’s spine and became stuck 30

.Baby Theo developed both fluid on his lungs and an infection - and had to be delivered quickly using forceps and ventouse. He was taken to the NICU to be given a course of antibiotics, and later drip-fed after he failed to feed properly and lost weight. Matt said: “The day before his birth, we had been laughing and excited about meeting him. We felt that everything was under control “The next day the person I loved was drugged and surrounded by professionals, who were concerned about my unborn child and monitoring his heartbeat. “As a father looking on, there was absolutely nothing I could do for my partner or son. It was a terrifying experience and I felt helpless. “But I never failed to be impressed by the experts looking after him, who kept us informed and reassured while doing their job.” Mother and baby both stayed in hospital for an extra 10 days receiving treatment, until given the all-clear. Matt said: “We felt such relief and gratitude as we carried him out in the car seat. Southmead Hospital is a special place, with a committed and phenomenal team.” More medical care was required three months later when Theo was diagnosed with intussusception, a serious condition in which part of the intestine slides into an adjacent part of the intestine. He was treated at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

Matt said: “As he was put to sleep before his procedure, I held his hand. Then I watched in awe as team of experts cared for him. “We are lucky to have such support in our city and short drive away, whereas we met other people who had travelled from around the South West and Wales.” Premature

Moving Experience has already raised over £6,000 for Southmead Hospital Charity and will continue to fundraise for both charities until the end of the year and beyond. Adrian Brown, corporate and community manager at Southmead Hospital Charity, said: “Thank you to Matt and everyone at Moving Experience for their support of our charity and our hospital – this is a wonderful example of a business making a real difference in their community.

Two and a half years later, Matt and Rachel were back at Southmead Hospital when their second son, Harry, was born prematurely with “The hospital’s NICU and maternity deunder-developed lungs and jaundice. partments are always thrilled to see former patients and their parents return happy and Once again Matt found himself alongside healthy and they are truly touched when that a baby who was taken to NICU unit, but thank you is turned into fundraising that can this time was relieved that at least he went help them save even more lives.” · To find out straight to the in the High Dependency Unit, more about Matt’s fundraising and discounts, and not into intensive care where his older brother had been. visit www.community-mortgage.co.uk/ Matt said: “Holding my tiny baby, I realised how fragile life is and how much we owed to the people who dedicate their lives to helping others. Simply saying thank you did not feel like enough.”

Clean the air in polluted somerset villages

“They were suggesting the efficiency is probably 2.5 metres to the side. That’s one type of technology, we need to look further afield.” The firm quoted a reasonable sum of £14,000 and then £1,000 a year in maintenance. A local Councillor said: “I worry we haven’t got any independent evidence about the technology. I’m worried we might end up with an expensive white elephant that doesn’t deliver. “Could we think about road charging for the most polluting vehicles? How could we divert the problem rather than mitigate it?”

The latest technology may be brought in to suck the air pollution out of two heavily congested areas in north east Somerset.

The busy A37 runs through both villages and this project could help massively reduce pollution. The average nitrogen dioxide levels in the last three years have been as high as 75 micrograms per cubic metre in Temple Cloud – the legal limit is 40 micrograms.

Bath and North East Somerset Council is using other quick methods to improve air quality in the local villages – it is creating a new footpath in Temple Cloud to take pedestrians away from the road, cutting back the tree canopy so as pollution can escape and also lowering the speed limit to reduce stopping and starting of vehicles. The Environmental protection manager Aled Williams said to the scrutiny panel members on the 16th November: “We’re looking at the use of technology to clean the air. It would remove nitrogen dioxide in the vicinity of the cabinet.

Approximately eighteen thousand vehicles use the though road every day. this small road is the main artery between the south and the M5. The local councilor is calling for a new dual carriageway that can accommodate large vehicle such as HGV’s and a restriction on the width of the existing road, She added : “We had to push for proper infrastructure”. The government department Defra had agreed that a width restriction would make a difference but the idea had been ruled out by the West of England mayor Tim Bowles.
