Bristol 1904 are excited to announce their Annual 110th Paintings Exhibition, open to the public free of charge, with the chance to buy members' work. Traditionally held in May, but due to earlier COVID restrictions the Exhibition will now be held from 23rd - 30th October. This time around, Bristol 1904 will not only celebrate decades of creativity, but also the rebirth of their Society. Founded in 1904 as Bristol Savages with artistic roots running deep into Bristol’s creative history, the Society has rebranded with a new name and new activities that more accurately portray current interests. This still includes the classic painting, music, magic, poetry, storytelling and fellowship. The event will be held in their iconic hall, built in the style of an old Tythe Barn, adjacent to The Red Lodge on Park Row, Bristol (BS1 5LJ). All pandemic regulations will be followed in their spacious hall, accompanied by live music.
Not only used for exhibitions, the facility is used by all members, each in individual clubs provided by Bristol 1904, open daily at 10AM until 4.45PM. Bristol 1904 elaborated, “Our major artistic event, open to the public and always well attended, is the Annual Paintings Exhibition of the best of our artists’ work.” They added, “We are proud to have progressed from an all-male society to an open, diverse, inclusive and as always a very welcoming one. We encourage new membership, whether you have artistic or musical talents, or none of these! Guests of members are very welcome.” Check out our website: www.bristol1904arts. org or email on admin@bristol1904arts.org for further information.

TREASURE ISLAND STORY WALK Where it all began: Bristol Docks Show Of Strength’s Treasure Island Story Walk is the perfect half term treat. Bristol is where Squire Trelawney found and fitted out the good ship Hispaniola, where Long John Silver ran a pub called The Spylass, and where young Jim Hawkins stepped off the coach from Devon to set sail on the biggest adventure of his life – the search for Captain Flint’s buried treasure.
...only the crew troubled me until the most remarkable stroke of fortune brought me the very man that I required... an old sailor who keeps a public-house, knows all the seafaring men in Bristol, and had lost his health ashore. I engaged him on the spot to be ship's cook. Long John Silver, he is called, and has lost a leg...’
Led by a professional actor in period costume, Treasure Island Story Walk is full of pirates and buccaneers; hidden spy holes; dark secrets, dirty deeds and lashings of doubloons.
Adults £12, under 16 £6, family (2+2) £30. Duration: 1 hour.
11am and 2pm on Monday 25, Wednesday 27 and Friday 29 October. Suitable for families with children aged 4+, you’ll hear the story where is all began 250 years ago: Bristol docks. Here’s Squire Trelawney’s letter from Bristol’s Old Anchor Inn: “Dear Livesey The ship is bought and fitted. She lies at anchor, ready for sea. You never imagined a sweeter schooner—a child might sail her—two hundred tons; name, Hispaniola.

Heat pump grants worth £5,000 to replace gas boilers
Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said the grants to support the adoption of heat pumps, available from next April, would play a role in that, by helping to bring down the cost of the relatively new technology by 2030.
Homeowners will be offered subsidies of £5,000 from next April to help them to replace old gas boilers with low carbon heat pumps.
Currently an air source heat pump costs between £6,000 and £18,000, depending on the type installed and the size of a property.
The grants are part of the government’s £3.9bn plan to reduce carbon emissions from heating homes and other buildings.
“As the technology improves and costs plummet over the next decade, we expect low-carbon heating systems will become the obvious, affordable choice for consumers,” Mr Kwarteng said.
It is hoped no new gas boilers will be sold after 2035. The funding also aims to make s ocial housing and public buildings more energy efficient. Experts say the budget is too low and the strategy not ambitious enough. Ministers say the subsidises will make heat pumps a comparable price to a new gas boiler. But the £450m being allocated for the subsidies over three years will cover a maximum of 90,000 pumps. Heating buildings is a large contributor to the UK’s overall greenhouse gas emissions, representing 21% of overall emissions, so there is pressure on the Heat and Buildings Strategy to deliver effective reductions. It comes as the government prepares to outline its overarching strategy for how the UK will reduce its dependency on fossil fuels and achieve sharp reductions in emissions over the next couple of decades.
12
“Through our new grant scheme, we will ensure people are able to choose a more efficient alternative in the meantime.” While homeowners will be encouraged to switch to a heat pump or other low-carbon technology when their current boiler needs replacing, there is no requirement to remove boilers that are still working, the government emphasised. Writing in the Sun, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said “the Greenshirts of the Boiler Police are not going to kick in your door with their sandal-clad feet and seize, at carrot-point, your trusty old combi”. Mr Johnson also sought to reassure voters about the government’s ambitions by stressing that the costs of low-carbon heating systems would go down over time while their introduction would help create thousands of new job opportunities.

Recognising the teams going above and beyond to improve diversity October is Black History Month and Avon and Somerset Police are celebrating with two separate awards which recognise theirs and Avon and Somerset Police’s Black Police Association’s work in progressing the causes of inclusion and diversity. Avon and Somerset Police’s Black Police Association Outreach Volunteers have won the Police Support Volunteer Team Award at this year’s Lord Ferrers Awards, an annual Home Office event which recognises the vital role that volunteers play in support of policing and community safety across England and Wales. The event took place in London last week on the 14th October and was attend by the Home Secretary Priti Patel and the Home Office Minister Kit Malthouse. In addition, Avon and Somerset Police have received an Outstanding Contribution to Diversity Award for their participation in the Stepping Up scheme in Bristol, a leadership development and mentoring programme run by Bristol City Council, which aims to unlock the potential and develop the talents of people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. Kermal Singh, General Secretary of the Avon and Somerset Police BPA, who co-ordinates the Outreach Volunteers team and who was recently awarded an MBE for services to policing and diverse communities said: “ The Outreach Volunteers do ground breaking work in building strong and lasting relationships with communities.
20
“They play a central role in helping to create a more diverse and representative police force by delivering a wide range of outreach activities. They work tirelessly, giving up their time to promote our service’s values, breaking down barriers, dispelling myths and building confidence in the police. “They’ve also been engaging with young people from different backgrounds, helping to launch an interactive knife crime workshop and attending community events at schools, colleges and universities to secure the interest of future officers and staff. They thoroughly deserve this award which is the third they have won in the past 12 months.” The BPA Outreach Volunteers team are: Simranjeet Kaur, Andra Serbanescu, Tino Mushongah, Kishore Narain, Eden Tang, Kavita Kaur and Ted Stargatt. On hearing the news that Avon and Somerset Police were receiving an Outstanding Contribution to Diversity Award from Bristol City Council in recognition of their contribution to the Stepping Up programme, force lead for Inclusion and Diversity Esther Wride said: “I have been privileged to oversee the programme internally for the past four years and have seen some truly wonderful talent from the people who have taken part in this inspirational programme for future leaders run by Bristol City Council.
“It is an honour for Avon and Somerset Police to receive such a humbling award and we will continue in our efforts to become the most inclusive police service in the UK and ensure we reflect our diverse communities.” Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford added: “It is thanks to their dedication and commitment to improve inclusion and diversity in Avon and Somerset that the Avon and Somerset Police’s Black Police’s Association (BPA) and the force itself has been recognised with these two awards. “I know the hard work that both the force and the BPA Outreach Volunteers undertake to build and improve relationships with communities, support young people and to develop the talent of local people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. This work must continue to ensure Avon and Somerset are taking steps in the right direction to become a more diverse and representative police force and, ultimately, the most inclusive police service in the UK. Well done to those involved!” The Outstanding Contribution to Diversity Award will be presented at Police Headquarters in Portishead on 9th November.

Driving in cold weather could break Highway Code rules, lead to fines and licence points
Drivers are being urged to stay safe when driving this winter, or they could risk being fined and having penalty points to their licence. With the weather starting to get colder and the days getting shorter, road users are being warned to make necessary checks before driving. Rules 226 to 237 of the Highway Code address motoring laws in regard to “driving in adverse weather conditions”. Rule 229 specifically sets out what drivers should do before they enter their vehicle. It states: “Before you set off you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows. “You MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible. Make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly. “Remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users. “Check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted.” If drivers do not abide by these Highway Code rules, they could risk a £60 fine. Drivers may also receive penalty points on their driving licence for not abiding by the rules. 22
Motorists could even be in hot water with their car insurance companies if an accident were to occur. If an insurance company finds out drivers were not following the highway code, it could lead to a withheld payout. To demist a windscreen, the RAC advises drivers start the heater off cold and direct the flow of air at the windscreen and windows, then slowly increase the temperature. It does, however, cause a distraction to other motorists when it eventually comes off, so it is worth it to remove the snow whilst demisting the car. Ultimately, when clearing ice and demisting the car, try and ensure all the snow has been removed too. However, if on a public road the highway code states: "You must not leave a vehicle’s engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road." Alongside making the vehicle an easy target for theft, drivers could land themselves with a fine ranging from £20 to £80 depending on the location. This is only applicable on public roads, so motorists are safe to demist on driveways and other areas of private land.

JOS & ANDREW TELLS US WHATS GOING ON Nightingale Valley tar barrels: Following complaints from concerned residents, we wrote to the Council regarding the tar barrels and broken glass in Nightingale Valley. Here’s the Council’s response: “Our staff regularly monitor the site along with occasional visits from the contaminated land officer. Overall, it has been monitored for 20 years with no movement/seepage witnessed, however, should there be any movement or seepage witnessed, please ensure that the Environment Agency and Bristol City Council are notified straight away so that we can witness it for ourselves. We are currently looking into the possibility of covering the barrels and we will speak to the Contaminated Land Officer and ask if she will pay a visit to the site to investigate whether there has been any movement or seepage. Other options regarding removal of the barrels has been looked at but ruled out due to how this may affect the stability of the bank. The last visit was made on 4th May 2021 where it was reported that there had been no movement or seepage. With regards to the broken glass, as this is not on Bristol City Council land it would not be our responsibility to clear it and as the earth is eroded further, more may appear. We could look to erect a sign advising that users use this section of the brook at their own risk and advising of what is present.” Following discussions with the Friends of Brislington Brook (FOBB), we’ve written back to the Council requesting they proceed with new signage and also undertake another inspection of the tar barrels as video evidence from September does indicate fresh seepage. Asbestos clean-up: Earlier in the year we told you about the flats on Callington Road, where some tenants’ belongings became contaminated with asbestos in the storage cages below the flats. The Council has now settled all the claims for compensation with the residents concerned.
24
The caged area has been successfully decontaminated and the Council is assessing the feasibility of using the space going forward. Council officers are also looking to install a bike store and will be in touch with all the residents about the plans for this in the near future. Anti-Slavery Day: Sunday was Anti-Slavery Day and we attended a special service at Bristol Cathedral. We learned that there are 136,000 adults and children trapped in modern slavery in the UK, an estimated 951 of whom are in Bristol. Victims come from many different countries and ethnicities including the UK. A giant, knitted and crochet chain consisting of 951 links, one for every victim in Bristol was unveiled and will be on display at the cathedral for a little while. To find out more about modern day slavery, please check out the work of the Clewer Initiative: https://theclewerinitiative.org Welcome Back Fund: We would like to draw your attention to the Welcome Back Fund, supporting activity and events that will safely animate and welcome people back to Bristol’s city centre and high streets, boosting footfall and supporting local businesses. Organisations can apply for up to £2,400 excluding VAT. Funds can be used to cover delivery costs of all, or part of, any activities or events that will help safely attract people to the city centre and high streets. Activity can range from markets or parades to pop up exhibitions or the marketing and promotion of an event or high street. Applications must be made by 12pm on 30 November 2021. All activities or events must be delivered, and funding spent by 31 March 2022. Visit the council website for further information: www.bristol.gov.uk/welcomebackfund Where’s it to? You may have seen the recent video of Brislington Village featuring some of our great local shops as part of the Where’s it to? campaign to help revitalise a small number of the city’s local shopping areas. The good news is, this has now been extended to cover all 47 high streets across Bristol, including Sandy Park Road.
Photographer, Chris Dobson We have been in touch with the organisers with the details of as many of our local, independent businesses on Sandy Park Road as possible in the hope that they can be featured in the next video and marketing materials. Unfortunately, due to limited funding, not every local business will be featured. The project is being funded through the Reopening High Streets Safely/Welcome Back funding which the Council received from the Government (as part of ERDF European Regional Development Fund).

Hundreds of Brislington West residents have signed up to receive our monthly newsletter via email. You can register using this link: http://www.bristollibdems.org/efocus.
A reminder that West Town Lane will be closed from 1 to 3 November for resurfacing works. Brislington War Memorial clean-up: A reminder that we will be tidying up our War Memorial this Saturday 23 October at 10am. The excellent Jamie from the Lodekka will be joining us as we cut back some of the undergrowth, sweep the site and do a litter pick. If you fancy popping along to help, please feel free.
Last autumn, we planted around 200 daffodils on Sand Hill, along the strip of grass between Sand Hill and Sandy Park Road. We hope the spring time display helped to provide some local colour. Next Saturday, we plan to plant even more daffs to have more impact. In the long term, we would love to see this patch of land planted with more diverse vegetation to encourage biodiversity.

Gritters to travel in a more sustainable way
Gritters across North Somerset will help keep major routes in North Somerset passable this winter in a more sustainable way. The six bright yellow vehicles will now run on Hydrogenerated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel as part of the council's commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. HVO fuel reduces the carbon associated with fuel usage by 90 per cent. It is produced entirely from renewable raw materials, including vegetable oils, animal fats, cooking oils, fish fats and corn oils, all of which are recovered from current industry practices and/or waste processing operations. Cllr Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council's executive member with responsibility for roads said the gritters covered many miles during the course of the winter and the switch to HVO supported the council's commitment to be carbon neutral in the future.
26
"The gritters cover a huge number of miles over the winter period so I am delighted that they will now be using a more environmentally friendly form of fuel in line with our climate emergency commitments. "Each gritter tends to operate in its named area, so look out for Burrrrrington, Bleadon-cold, Nailski, Portispread, Weston-scooper-Mare and Sleetholm during the winter months." The fleet are co-ordinated by highways engineers who work on schemes all year to improve the condition of the area’s roads, then become winter specialists from October to provide cover seven-days a week. Last winter, the gritters went out 52 times, used 2,400 tonnes of salt and gritted 9,857 miles of road. January was the busiest month with the gritters going out 23 times in total.

Consultation dates announced for Charfield Station plans People in Charfield are being encouraged to have their say on plans for a new railway station in the village. A 12-week consultation on proposals for Charfield Station is due to begin on Tuesday 19 October 2021. The consultation will close at midnight on Monday 10 January 2022. A new station will support sustainable travel to and from the village and surrounding area. The station will also improve access to jobs, education and a wider variety of services and facilities and help mitigate some of the impacts of recent development in the area. Preliminary plans are being developed by the Council and have been funded to date by the West of England Combined Authority. Network Rail has been appointed by the Council to progress a design for the station. An Outline Business Case for the station has been submitted to the Combined Authority to help secure funding to progress the scheme further. The new station will include two platforms serving north and southbound journeys, a pedestrian footbridge, a public transport interchange, covered cycle parking, and car parking. Services will connect Charfield to key locations for employment and education such as Filton and Patchway, Bristol City Centre and Gloucester. Feedback from local residents, businesses and organisations will be used to shape the station proposals going forward and inform more detailed designs. It is anticipated that a planning application for the scheme will be submitted in spring 2022, allowing time for the consultation feedback to inform the final plans. During the 12-week consultation a series of public drop-ins will be held in Charfield and the local area. At these events people will be able to learn more about the proposals and speak with members of the project team and representatives from Network Rail. 28
The events are being held on: •
Monday 8 November – 3pm to 7pm at Wotton Town Hall, Market Street, Wotton-under-Edge
•
Wednesday 10 November – 2pm to 5.30pm at Charfield Memorial Hall, Wotton Road, Charfield
•
Saturday 13 November – 10.30am to 2.30pm at Charfield Memorial Hall, Wotton Road, Charfield.
Information about the scheme can be found by visiting www.southglos.gov.uk/charfieldstation People who are interested in the scheme are also encouraged to sign up for a new project newsletter. This can be done via the webpage. South Gloucestershire Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Environment and Strategic Infrastructure Cllr Steve Reade said: “A new railway station for Charfield has been talked about for many years and it is really exciting to see that deliverable plans are coming forward. “I would encourage people living in Charfield and the surrounding villages to take part in the consultation and have their say on the proposals. “Improving the public transport network for our rural communities is vitally important and will enable more people to consider sustainable travel options, which in turn will help with the Council’s climate emergency target to lower carbon emissions.” To take part in the consultation, visit www.southglos.gov.uk/consultation and search for Charfield Station.

FareShare South West, the region’s largest food redistribution charity who supply food to over 350 frontline organisations, has today announced the launch of FoodStock 2021: an emergency winter campaign, which will build a stockpile of ambient food with the funds and infrastructure to deliver it through a difficult winter. The decision to launch the campaign and operation earlier than planned comes amid concerns about the security of food supply to the charity, which in recent weeks has seen a 30% reduction as a result of the ongoing HGV driver crisis. Julian Mines, FareShare South West CEO says, “We knew that this winter would present challenges, with the rising cost of living, the complete end to furlough, and with the reduction in universal credit. That is why we planned to run FoodStock 2021, boosting levels of food reaching those most in need during the winter months. However, with the additional challenges created by the HGV driver crisis, and with our expectation that this disruption will remain for some time, it is clear that the scale of our FoodStock 2021 operation will need to be more significant, and that we may need more support from the people of Bristol than we had previously expected. The emergency food that will be amassed as part of the operation, along with the increased funds we hope the campaign will generate, will mean we can both bolster deliveries to organisations working with the most vulnerable over winter, as well as being confident in our abilities to continue our regular operations, ensuring frontline settings receive food from us consistently, which they can then provide to their end users.”
30
FareShare South West will source ambient food at scale from across the food industry in the coming two months, with the aim of redistributing enough food for 1 million meals between now and January 2022. Julian Mines continues: “The disruption we’re experiencing sadly means increased costs to our charity, including organising last minute collections and deliveries, overhauling systems at short notice and the costs associated with getting increasing amounts of short-dated food through our warehouses and to partners quickly, in order to avoid waste. We have an exciting fundraising opportunity, where donations from the public will be matched in late November, but for now we’re encouraging individuals and local businesses to consider fundraising ideas, volunteering with us, as well as simply making sure everybody they know, knows that FoodStock 2021 is happening this year. We are yet again relying on the power of Bristol – a city brimming with care and compassion – to come together to help us ensure those most in need don’t go without this winter.” The hub for the FoodStock 2021 operation, with the mass of stockpiled ambient food and infrastructure to deliver it, will be based out of FareShare South West’s temporary warehouse, a former beds warehouse in Ashton Gate, with deliveries from the warehouse expected to start as soon as 1st November. To contact the charity to discuss donating food at scale or haulage support to the winter operation, email: ben.evans@faresharesouthwest.org.uk

Somerset business leads festive season celebrations with alcohol-free advent calendars Somerset business, Wise Bartender, has launched two alcohol-free advent calendars for the 2021 festive season, giving people the chance to enjoy their favourite beers, wines, ciders and spirits as well as trying some of the new brands coming to market. The leading online retailer of low-alcohol and alcohol-free drinks is headed by drinks specialist Tom Ward and has just completed an expansion into bigger premises in Evercreech, Somerset. The traditional Wise Bartender alcohol-free beer advent calendar will sit alongside the vegan sweet and tasty box which includes a selection of 24 delicious wines, spirits, cocktails and more, all at no more than 0.5% ABV. Both advent calendars are available to order at https://wisebartender.co.uk/ at an introductory, discounted retail price of £39.99 + £4.99 delivery for the first 250 of each ordered, after which the cost will revert to £59.99 + free delivery. Tom Ward commented “Three years ago, Wise Bartender helped put Somerset on the low-alcohol map as we were the first retailer to offer an alcohol-free drinks advent calendar. Since then, the choice of low- an d no-alcohol drinks has expanded rapidly enabling us to provide two really varied and appealing festive boxes for 2021. I can’t share exact details of the contents as that would spoil the surprise as the advent ‘door’ was opened each day, but I am confident that people will enjoy the mixture of popular and emerging drinks that they’ll discover, with the boxes including a number of award-winners.
36
With the support of the drinks producers, Wise Bartender can offer a 30% discount on the price of both alcohol-free advent calendars for the first 250 purchased, but with orders already being taken, I would encourage people to order as soon as possible rather than leaving it until the last minute. There are expectations that volumes of UK low- and no-alcohol drinks will rise by 22% by 2024 so this advent calendar is the ideal opportunity to explore some of the fantastic options available and enjoy the great taste and quality refreshment that each one brings.” Both advent calendars will be interactive, as producers bring their drinks to life by taking over the Wise Bartender social media accounts with photos, videos and tasting sessions. Everyone who buys one of the boxes is encouraged to join in with other alcohol-free fans, tasting the same drink at the same time each day and learning about it from the brands themselves. And as an extra bonus, new for 2021, there will be freebies and exclusive content and competitions just for advent calendar subscribers. “Whether you regularly drink alcohol-free drinks, want to try something different, cut back on alcohol over Christmas, or maybe you are buying as a treat for someone else” added Tom, “the Wise Bartender advent calendars are a must-have this December ho-ho-holiday.”

Parking charges to be introduced at Bristol's Blaise Castle and Oldbury Court estates in November Parking charges are to be introduced at two of Bristol's large countryside estates from November, in a bid to manage parking while raising money to invest in green spaces. New pay and display machines will be installed at the Blaise Castle and Oldbury Court estates by Bristol City Council, with prices starting at £1 for one hour. The council say the new charges are necessary "to help manage parking at both sites and to enable investment in all of Bristol’s parks and green spaces." They also say the new measures are "being delivered to protect junctions, driveways, and bus routes from obstructive parking." Pay and display machines will also be installed at Snuff Mills car park, while single and double yellow lines will also be painted on sections of several surrounding roads in the next few weeks. How much will it cost to park? All three car parks will charge for parking between 9am and 6pm and the standard charges will be: £1 for up to one hour £2 for up to two hours £3 for up to five hours Parking for Blue Badge holders and for two-wheeled motorcyles will remain free, with no time restrictions. Standard parking will also remain free before 9am and after 6pm. Blaise Castle and Oldbury Court car parks may also use overflow parking at busy times, which will also be subject to the same charges as the main car parks.
40
Blaise Castle Estate car park will have some coach bays for use for coaches and minibuses. Charges for these will vary between £3 and £25 depending on the size of the vehicle and the length of stay. 'Significant investment required' Cllr Asher Craig, Deputy Mayor with responsibility for Communities, Equalities and Public Health, said: “Our parks and green spaces are already hugely popular with Bristolians and we want to ensure they remain attractive places to visit for future generations. "As well as taking care of natural and heritage assets across the city, we plan to host more events and activities and improve play, café, and toilet facilities. This requires significant investment for which the new parking charges will generate vital funds, during a time when the council is under increasing financial pressure due to government cuts and the impacts of the pandemic. Cllr Asher Craig, Deputy Mayor with responsibility for Communities, Equalities a nd Public Health "The new arrangement will help to ensure that green spaces across the city are a welcoming place for locals, visitors and wildlife for years to come.” His colleague, Cllr Don Alexander, Cabinet Member for Transport, added: "The new arrangements will help to encourage a higher turnover of spaces and reduce obstructive parking on surrounding roads. "This will help to ease issues with traffic congestion in the area, which will also help to keep buses running on time. "We would also encourage everyone to walk, cycle or get the bus for short journeys if they can, as this will also help us to deliver clean air for Bristol and meet our commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030.”

First buyers celebrate build completions The first buyers at a brand-new community in the Forest of Dean have been on site to meet their soon-to-be neighbours and watch the final touches being made to their new homes. An unprecedented number of people have registered their interest in the homes now under construction at Merlin Gate, on the ed ge of Newent, where the doors to the brand new show homes have officially opened this week (11th October). Seven couples were invited on site to celebrate this major milestone as local housebuilder David Wilson Homes works to complete their new homes, with several due to complete in time for Christmas. More than 1,000 people have signed up to receive updates on the Forest of Dean development and nine homes have already been sold, even before the show homes opened this week. An average of 350 people are week are registering their interest in David Wilson Homes developments across Gloucestershire including Great Oldbury, Stonehouse, and Rosewood Grange, Hardwicke, in addition to Merlin Gate. This strong demand for new homes has been seen across the South West with more than double the number of people registering their interest in a David Wilson or Barratt Home compared to two years ago. More than 1,000 people a week have been signing up for updates on developments this year, compared to 700 a week in 2019. One couple who joined the gathering at Merlin Gate were James and Lizabeth Guy, whose family live close by to the new community. Talking about their future home, James said:
42
"We're both really looking forward to moving into our new home, especially as our daughter and two grandchildren live so close by and will just be two fields away from us. It will be great to be just around the corner from them." Merlin Gate is a new community of 230 homes being built by housebuilders Barratt and David Wilson Homes in the Forest of Dean. Named in celebration of the neighbouring International Centre for Birds of Prey, the new development will offer a range of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes, along with two new play areas and large areas of public open space. Over 100 new trees are being planted on and around the site, which is within walking distance of the historic town centre of Newent and a short walk away from nearby Newent Lake. Louise Ware, sales director for David Wilson Homes' South West division, said: "We were delighted to welcome our first home-owners to Merlin Gate to celebrate and have a sneak preview inside the brand new show homes, which officially opened this week. As well as a chance to get excited about what life will be like in their new homes, which our first residents will be able to move into for Christmas, they were also able to meet their soon-to-be neighbours, helping to build a sense of community from the start." As well as providing new homes for the area, Merlin Gate's construction will support up to 700 new jobs[1] and will be making significant community contributions including £45,000 towards local libraries in Newent. A total of 138 of the homes are being built for private sale, 79 of which are from David Wilson Homes and 59 from Barratt Homes. A further 92 homes - 40% of the total - will be affordable homes.

TOP TIPS TO KEEP YOUR CATS SAFE THIS HALLOWEEN With the leaves falling from the tress and pumpkins ready for carving, the spooky season is fast approaching. Halloween is fun for a lot of people, but did you ever stop to consider how the celebration could potentially put your feline friend in danger.
So the combination of small strangers knocking on your door throughout the night in a variety of terrifying costumes, provides you with the ultimate cocktail of chaos to scare your cat. Providing safe spaces for your cat to hide is essential for keeping them calm.
Here are the tops tips you can follow to make sure that your cats stay safe and unspooked this Halloween.
Get ahead of the game in getting your cat used to any new cosy and quiet nook, the old faithful cardboard box is perfect for this.
Like a cat to a flame
Maybe even include something that smells like their favourite human to snuggle. And finally, why not whack on some calming kitten music if they're particularly nervous.
Carving pumpkins is the season staple of fun, getting competitive over designs and displaying them in windows is a tradition we humans love to get involved with. But do consider your kitten before lighting your lantern. Cats can be easily drawn in and distracted by the flicker of a flame. Unless you’re there for full supervision, how about finding LED paw friendly alternatives to eliminate the risk of an indoor bonfire. Hide and seek Despite being the witch’s number one companion of choice, most cats are easily spooked when it comes to strangers, loud noises and all things ghoulish. 46
Cat proofing Cats and decorations, sometimes we question whether it’s even worth it when remembering how many times we’ve had to scrape the Christmas tree and all its baubles off the floor in the run up to Christmas. But of course it is! We just need to be better at cat-proofing. Our four legged friends are famous for being curious, and just can’t resist snooping around, climbing up or tearing down anything that isn’t too familiar.
Keep everything as out of reach as possible and be sure to check your decorations are cat safe. Often strings and similar materials can cause problems for your cat if ingested, so make sure they’re not munching on any fauxcobwebs when you’re not looking. Keep the treats out of reach
Halloween and Bonfire Night fall so closely together, so add in some premature fireworks from your next door neighbour and your cat could get quite the scare. Do your best to keep them safely indoors where possible and all of your microchip details up to date, giving them the best possible chance to get home should they decide to dart.
Be it trick or treat, best to keep it out of reach. As most pet owners will know, chocolate is a no no for our favourite fur friends, so be sure to store your bag of goodies safely away from creeping paws.
Fancy dress, yes or no?
If your curious kitten does manage to get hold of anything they shouldn’t, always call your vet for the best advice on what to do next.
Forcing your feline into a pair of bat wings may just be the final straw and cause unnecessary stress for your kitten, just for the sake of a cute Insta pic.
Chip your chums It is a legal requirement to make sure your pets are microchipped in the UK. Keeping on top of your details is essential, especially over the winter months where the days are shorter for your cat to slink away under the cover of darkness. On Halloween it’s even easier for your cat to become spooked by unruly ghoulies and bolt without thinking.
Most cats will not enjoy being dressed up, a great shame for us owners but we must respect their choices.
However if you’re one of the lucky ones with a laid back cat who will go along with anything for a treat, we’re all for it. We hope these handy tips help keep your kitten calm over Halloween, and both cats and humans alike can enjoy spook season and all the festivities that go with it.
