History of the month of August In the original 10 month Roman calendar, August was the sixth month with 30 days and was originally named Sextilis. In 8 BC, the Roman Senate rewarded Octavian Augustus a month in his honor. The founder and first emperor of the Roman Empire, Octavian Augustus selected Sextilis, which under the Julian calendar was the eighth month with the addition of January and February. Renamed to Augustus, there remained the issue of the month having fewer days than Julius (July). Whether Octavian adjusted the number of days to match that of July is uncertain, but the result left February with 28 days except in a leap year and September and November each gave up a day to October and December to avoid a trifecta of 31 days in a row. For hubris or pride or both, the Julian calendar came to be. Today, August is the eighth month of the modern calendar with 31 days. It also wraps up the summer months in the Northern Hemisphere that also include the Dog Days of Summer.
4
This traditionally hot and humid time lures people to pools and beaches to cool off. In the Southern Hemisphere, winter reigns. In the sporting world, the U.S. Open Tennis Championships begin at the end of August while the National Football League kicks off its preseason matchups. August birthdays celebrate with the gladiolus and poppy. Other flowers coming into bloom in August include goldenrod and salvia. Peridot and spinel are the birthstones of those born in August. Peridot is a semi-precious olive or lime-green stone found in lava flows and veins from the United States to Finland and Pakistan, among others. Found in shades of pink, red, blue, violet and lavender, spinel is a more recent addition to the August birthstones.
8 Interesting Facts About People Born in August! 1. Confident People born this month are usually very confident. Depending on their date of birth, they would either be a Leo or Virgo, and there’s a lot to like about people born under both of these signs. Leos are extremely confident. They are strong, both physically and mentally. Strong-willed, proud, loyal, and brave, they can be outspoken and often enjoy being the centre of attention. 2. Organised Virgos are generally witty, hardworking, and practical. They have an appealing personality too. Detail-oriented, organised, and practical, they tend to be intelligent and reliable. They should grow up to be a responsible individual. All that hard work and attention to detail will help them achieve their goals. 3. Good Leader August-borns are confident, organised, and practical. These are the basic qualities of a good leader. If a person born in August grows up to be a leader or a manager in a big organisation, don’t be surprised, because they will have gained that position because of all the hard work they put in. August-borns make naturally strong leaders because of their confidence and charisma. 4. Royalty People born in August love being treated like royalty. They are very reciprocal and giving when treated with respect and honour. They enjoy being noticed when they enter a room which they would often do quite dramatically and won’t hesitate to ask for your praise when they don’t get it!
5. Outgoing Those born this month also have an outgoing personality. They are confident, have little self-control, but are kind-hearted. They can easily talk to people and get along with them. Although they love being the centre of attention, they are also empathic listeners. They make great conversationalists and tend to be daydreamers. Their social skills are generally second-to-none. 6. Solitude Although they are outgoing, August-borns tend to be private regarding sensitive issues and need some me-time now and then. They also don’t open up easily to people except for the ones they are really close to and trust. 7. Selective August-borns are selective and have high standards. They are quite conservative with their affection and you would need to make them feel special before they begin to reciprocate. Because of their high standards, not everybody can be their close friends. 8. Stubborn Being intuitive and good at reading people, those born in August are often very stubborn. They think that their opinions matter the most, and surprisingly, they are right most of the times. They tend to protect their pride to stop people from seeing their sensitive side.

First images released of new train station at Brabazon
YTL Developments and Network Rail have unveiled the first computer-generated images of the planned train station at Brabazon, which is scheduled to be submitted for planning this month. Brabazon will be a new neighbourhood for Bristol, centred around the YTL Arena Bristol. The station at Brabazon – currently known as Filton North – will connect the new neighbourhood and YTL Arena Bristol to Bristol Temple Meads in less than 15 minutes once it is completed as part of MetroWest Phase 2. Network Rail will be submitting the detailed planning application for the station in August. Subject to approval, Network Rail are expected to begin construction in 2022, with the station then scheduled to be operational in 2023. YTL Arena Bristol is scheduled to open its doors for the first time in 2024. YTL Developments is contributing more than £1m to the cost of the railway station, which forms part of an integrated transport plan for Brabazon. The new rail station will connect with the MetroBus as it passes through Brabazon, allowing journeys across North Bristol by public transport. The station will also link to the network of walking routes and cycle paths planned for the neighbourhood. 16
Details of the station come just a few weeks after YTL Developments appointed consultants to develop designs for Brabazon Park, which will be 200m West of the new station and directly in front of YTL Arena Bristol. The new park, which is expected to open to the public in 2024, is set to be the largest new urban public park in the South West for 50 years. The first two, three and four bedroom homes and one and two bedroom apartments at Brabazon – in a phase known as The Hangar District – are also under construction approximately 300m to the north of the new station. The very first residents moved in in May this year. Seb Loyn, director at YTL Developments, said: “Investing in public transport and active travel is a key part of the vision to ensure Brabazon becomes a thriving new neighbourhood for Bristol. “With our first homes now selling fast, the new rail station due to be operational by 2023 and then Brabazon Park and the YTL Arena Bristol due to open in 2024, progress is well underway to deliver on that vision.”

Drug and alcohol safety warning issued
People are being urged to be careful City leaders have issued a safety warning following a spate of health-related incidents linked to drugs and alcohol in Bristol. Senior Public Health and Police officers have spoken out about their concerns about the introduction of dangerous high strength recreational drugs into the city that have sadly claimed the life of one young person and hospitalised several others in the past week. Christina Gray, Director of Public Health at Bristol City Council, said: “We’re becoming increasingly concerned about reports of a potentially lethal batch of drugs circulating in the city. It remains to be seen how widespread the issue is, however the recent hospitalisation of several people and the death of a young person over one weekend, suggests that this is not an isolated incident. Whilst I advise everyone against the use of illegal substances I urge anyone who intends to do so to take extra care and be aware of your friends and the help available to you. We’ve all waited a long time for the weekends to return, please don’t make it your last. 18
“Help is available for anyone who needs it, be it immediate health support if you or a friend are in trouble or longer-term aid to overcome addiction. If you’re worried about someone or you need confidential advice, please get in touch with a local or national service as soon as possible.” Bristol Commander Supt Mark Runacres said: "We'd urge people to follow the advice of health experts to make sure they do not put themselves at undue risk. "Officers will again be out engaging with people across the weekend as part of our established night-time economy policing plans. "Our aim is not to stop people having fun; our aim is to make sure people remain safe while they have a good time." Anyone in immediate danger or in need of urgent medical support should call 999. Longer term support is available through a number of specialist organisations, with a range of medical and psychological help on offer.
Bristol ROADS (recovery orientated alcohol and drug service) offers a single point of contact for a range support options, delivered through a consortium of specialist organisations. Petrol prices hit eight-year high Drivers are being advised to visit supermarkets to find the best value fuel this summer, with the cost of a litre of petrol around 3p cheaper compared to the average and more than 16p less than at motorway service areas.
The RAC advises motorists on their website to visit supermarkets to find the best value fuel this summer, with the price of a litre of petrol around 3p cheaper compared to the average and more than 16p less than at motorway service areas.
Millions of motorists are being hit in the pocket as petrol prices reach an eight-year high after nine successive months of hikes, latest RAC figures show.
RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “Prices really are only going one way at the moment - and that’s not the way drivers want to see them going.
And the cost at the pump is only set to rise further, warns the motoring organisation, with demand for oil outstripping supply amid the continuing global recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.
“With a second summer staycation in full swing, it’s proving to be a particularly costly one for many families who are using their cars to holiday here in the UK.
The rise in prices, which saw 3.4p and 2.7p added to a litre of petrol and diesel respectively in July, will also fuel the cost of staycations, which have seen a spike amid uncertainty over overseas travel restrictions.
“With so many people depending on their vehicles, there’s really nothing drivers can do to escape the high prices, and our best advice is for them to drive as economically as possible in order to try to make their money go further.
According to the RAC, last month saw the largest increase in the price of unleaded since January.
“Right now it’s hard to see what it will take for prices to start falling again.
The price rises meant that last month was the most expensive July to fill up with petrol since 2013, and for diesel since 2014. A driver filling up a 55-litre capacity car with petrol now pays on average £3.08 more to fill up than they did at the start of June, and £11.47 more than they did a year ago. For diesel drivers, filling a similarly sized tank now costs £2.90 more than at the start of June, and £10.46 more than it did at the end of July 2020. As countries move to rally from the economic turmoil caused by the COVID-19 crisis, demand for oil is increasing, pushing up wholesale fuel prices which are passed into drivers.
22
“While we’re not past the pandemic by any means, demand for oil is likely to continue to increase as economic activity picks up again, and this is likely to have the effect of pushing up wholesale fuel prices, costs which retailers are bound to pass on at the pumps. “Unless major oil producing nations decide a new strategy to increase output, we could very well see forecourt prices going even higher towards the end of the summer. “If there is any good news at all, it is that prices would need to rise significantly further - by a further 3p - to reach the highest prices we saw in 2013. “But that’s no comfort for the millions of drivers who are faced with paying so much more for fuel than they have done in many years.”

Out and about this week in Brislington with Jos and Andrew A new path for Arnos Court Park: Last week, we attended our Area Committee meeting at City Hall. Area Committees are responsible for allocating Community Infrastructure Levy funding to local improvement projects. Brislington West is part of Area Committee 5, which includes Brislington East, Knowle, Windmill Hill, Southville and Bedminster. There were several projects totalling well over £200,000 but there was only around £70,000 available for funding. we spoke in support of schemes put forward by Greater Brislington Together, including one submitted by the Friends of Arnos Court Park for a new path leading to the steps by Arnos Vale Cemetery and one submitted by the Friends of Brislington Brook for a new handrail and repairs to steps leading from Newbridge Road into Nightingale Valley. We are pleased to say, councillors from across South Bristol voted to take both schemes forward to the next stage of the process. Let Loose Family Fun Day: Thank you to everyone who came along and hopefully, enjoyed themselves at the Let Loose Family Fun Day, which took place last Saturday at the Imperial Sports Ground on West Town Lane. There were activities for all, including face painting, a bouncy castle, a giant slide, Zumba, martial arts and fitness classes, a food and beverage court, stalls supporting local businesses, It’s a Knockout tournament, a dog show and much, much more.

New public artwork, named Home from Home, to be installed at Ladden Garden Village A new public artwork named Home from Home, is soon to be installed at Ladden Garden Village, a major new development delivering hundreds of new homes for north Yate. The artwork will take the form of a pavilion, made from repurposed waste materials and timber offcuts from construction sites including Ladden Garden Village and the Whirlpool washing machine factory in Yate. It will be a temporary structure, to be used as an outdoor arts venue and catalyst for creative activity. Barratt Homes is creating a range of 1, 2, 3 and 4-bedroom homes at Ladden Garden Village, set within 32 acres of open space. The leading housebuilder is funding the new public artwork through its Section 106 planning requirements. This already established community will also include a primary school, nursery and shop when complete, as well as four acres of new play areas, sports pitches and 4.5 km of footpaths and cycleways. One of the play areas at the southern entrance to the new neighbourhood will be opening to the public in the coming weeks, with playground equipment for children to enjoy. Home from Home is set to be installed near to the play area in August. Bristol-based artist Jo Lathwood has been working on the artwork from her studio at Spike Island in the city, with the piece exploring ideas around sustainability and shelter, whilst its modular design was influenced by Yate's 20th century evolution into a centre for manufacturing.
Jo Lathwood held a public event, named FACTORY, at Spike Island in Bristol in 2019 as part of their Open Studios event which began the process of preparing offcuts to make Home from Home, with help from Yate Men's Shed and hundreds of other members of the public. An engagement programme of creative events and activities, led by visiting and local artists, will be held in and around the pavilion through a programme supported by the Arts Council and Barratt Homes, in association with Yate Parish. These will include family days, workshops, performances and exhibitions. It will also enable three artists, Kayle Brandon, Phil Owen and Oliver Sutherland, to develop new artworks inspired by the area and created collaboratively with local residents. Andrea Pilgrim, sales director at the Bristol division of Barratt Homes, says: "We are very much looking forward to Home from Home being in place at Ladden Garden Village, providing a chance for people to embrace their creativity and connect with their community. Ladden Garden Village is a hugely significant development, delivering hundreds of much-needed new homes alongside many other benefits for residents, including the soon-to-open play area which will offer a lovely, welcoming space for families to enjoy." A flythrough of the third phase of the development at Ladden Garden Village can be seen here. More than 270 of the Barratt Homes built in the first phases are now occupied. Construction on Barratt Homes' phase four of Ladden Garden Village is due to start next year. 27
SUMMER 2021 SEES HOME SALES Summer 2021 is shaping up to be a bumper house moving season in North Somerset thanks to a combination of pent-up demand due to Covid-19 restrictions and an increasing interest in the area from buyers.
“At the moment there are more people looking in North Somerset than ever. We are seeing more people from Bristol wanting to take the step into the countryside as it is the perfect area to work from home.”
Andrew Simmonds, director of Parker’s Estate Agents in Backwell says that the holiday season is now one of the best times to start the process of moving home.
Parker’s Estate Agents say the summer holidays need not delay sales. Once they have made a valuation, they can show prospective buyers around properties while families are away – which saves on disturbance and tidying up and have the offers waiting when you return.
He said: “One of the main reasons people tell us they want to relocate to North Somerset is because of the quality of the schools. People are keen for their children to start a new school with a new school year so they are looking to move this time of the year. “In 2021 we are seeing the consequences of the lockdowns due to Covid-19 still washing through. Many people wanted to move last year but they felt it was difficult in the lockdown and others who wanted to sell put it off because they didn’t feel comfortable with people looking around their home.
28
Homes with gardens often look good and sell well in the summer and for those not going away but looking to sell the agents recommend that those little jobs that tidy a property up are ideally completed in July and August. Said Mr Simmonds: “People’s own holiday plans needn’t be a barrier to selling a home. Often we prefer it if the seller is absent, as the house can stay tidy for several viewings and there is less disturbance. We can just hold the keys and look after a home while the seller is away.”

GOLFERS EYE UP THE MANOR HOUSE AS CASTLE COMBE IS NAMED THE PRETTIEST VILLAGE IN THE UK
Golfers have even more reason to be attracted to The Manor House, Wiltshire, after the village it is situated in, Castle Combe, has been crowned the prettiest village in the UK. A Welsh cottage company, FBM Holidays, conducted research looking at more than 160 places across the UK to collect data to determine the prettiest towns and villages in the country. Each town and village was scored on multiple ranking factors, including how many awards it has and the number of Instagram hashtags. How many times it featured in articles about the UK's prettiest places, towns or villages was also taken into consideration, as was its local National Trust sites and how many Google images of it were available. The data was then ranked to reveal the overall top 10 prettiest places to visit in the UK, with Castle Combe topping the charts.

Already boasting an enviable reputation among avid golfers, the delightful 18-hole championship course, immersed in the enchanting surroundings of the Cotswolds with 365 acres of breathtaking rolling countryside as a backdrop, offers some of the most idyllic scenery which can be seen on an English golf course. Designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark, the mature oak and beech trees that line the carefully manicured fairways, together with the immaculate greens and the River Bybrook meandering through the middle, bring both drama and beauty to the 6,500-yard parkland course, which is rightly considered one of the best in the South West. Golf Club Manager, Andrew Ryan, said: “We always knew that we were lucky enough to be located in one of the most beautiful parts of the country – but to be named number one is something quite extraordinary. “We’re incredibly proud of our surroundings and location, but we want to make sure that the product we offer is just as good. Our hotel and golf course are exceptional and blend seamlessly with the scenery to offer a special experience in the Cotswolds.
“Our greenkeepers work tirelessly to make sure that the course is just as impressive as the village it is situated in. And with exceptional course conditions all year round, particularly at the moment where it’s looking immaculate, they deserve so much credit.” In addition to the golf course, The Manor House estate also encompasses the luxury 14th-century stately hotel, home to a Michelin starred restaurant, al-fresco dining terraces and a dedicated gin bar, as well as the cosy 12th-century country pub which sits in the heart of the village.

Bristol Sport Foundation reveals impact of its Reading Recovery programme
The Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the reading and literacy levels of young people throughout the country. Reading Recovery, a collaborative project between Bristol Sport Foundation (BSF) and its various corporate partners helps primary school children aged between 7 and 11 improve their literacy skills by giving them time to practice reading ‘one to one’ with a volunteer adult. BSF has recently released a deep-dive impact report for the 2020/2021 Reading Recovery Programme that looks at the positive influence that the volunteering of our employees has had on five wards of Greater Bristol. The report identifies some of the key outcomes from the programme such as improved literacy skills, improved confidence in reading and a renewed love of reading amongst the participants and highlights headline stats:
32
•
Together we delivered 256 hours of voluntary reading time.
•
The initiative was delivered in 5 wards of Bristol.
•
38 children were mentored for a minimum of 6 weeks.
•
We donated 458 books to families across Greater Bristol who did not have access to books at home.
•
5 Kindle devices donated to vulnerable families in Patchway.
Alan Walters, Headteacher at Coniston Primary School, hailed the impact of the mentoring: “Reading Recovery has been a huge success here at Coniston Primary School. The children who have taken part in the programme have thoroughly enjoyed it and the impact has been staggering. “We chose children who lacked confidence, not only as readers, but also within the classroom environment. The input from the reading ‘buddies’ is caring, encouraging and makes the children feel valued.
“The time they have invested in the children has increased their confidence and enhanced their love of reading. I cannot speak highly enough of the programme, the people involved and the impact it has had on the children at my school.” To access the full report, please click here and to find out more about Reading Recovery, please contact BSF by emailing foundation@ bristol-sport.co.uk

Striking new visuals revealed of Wapping Wharf's CARGO Work as construction gets underway New visuals have been revealed as works get underway to create CARGO Work, a stand-out, unique Grade A workspace that will form part of Wapping Wharf's much-loved community.
Preparatory works have already taken place on site with main construction works on the shell and core of the building now underway. The creation of the steel frame will follow in September.
With space for up to 230 people across 20,270 sq ft of space, the striking new CARGO Work building will be set within the stone walls of the disused J S Fry warehouse, which were formerly part of the old Bristol Gaol. Wapping Wharf is already home to an array of independent shops, restaurants, cafes and lifestyle businesses on Bristol's iconic harbourside, with this established and growing neighbourhood widely recognised for its eclectic food scene.
Stuart Hatton, managing director at Umberslade, the developer of Wapping Wharf, including CARGO Work, said: "We are thrilled that works are now progressing on CARGO Work, a completely unique concept that will create a stand-out working environment like no other, right in the heart of a thriving neighbourhood on Bristol's famous Floating Harbour. With its balconies and terraces offering impressive views and a modern, versatile working environment, CARGO Work has plenty to offer employers looking to prioritise well-being and flexibility by providing an attractive, inspiring, one-of-a-kind workspace. We are very excited about embarking on this exciting next chapter in the story of Wapping Wharf."
Offering stylish, contemporary new offices, CARGO Work will reflect its industrial dockside setting with its design in keeping with CARGO, the highly popular shipping container concept that houses many of the independent businesses at Wapping Wharf. Sustainably clad in upcycled shipping container components, CARGO Work will feature a glazed courtyard canopy, balconies and terraces to all floors with views across southern Bristol.
38
CARGO Work has been designed to be highly sustainable and low in energy use. Brise soleils prevent heat gain inside the building and photovoltaic roof panels take advantage of the building's sunny position to create solar energy.
It will include 47 secure bicycle racks and 7 parking spaces, as well as EV charging provision. The organisation or organisations which take the space at CARGO Work will have the opportunity to work with the developer to fit out and finish according to their own creative vision, resulting in a bespoke, tailored working environment. Lambourn Commercial and Carter Jonas are the joint agents marketing CARGO Work. CARGO Work is designed by the award-winning architects behind phase one and two of Wapping Wharf, Alec French Architects, and is being constructed by award-winning and specialist contractor Halsall. Damian Lambourn of Lambourn Commercial said: "What we are hearing from the market is that larger organisations are struggling to find unique, creative workspace that will support their strategy to attract and retain the best talent. CARGO Work will help meet this gap, providing 20,270 sq ft of cutting-edge offices to companies looking for a new home for 100 to around 230 employees."
Wapping Wharf has been an enormous placemaking success, so it is no surprise that people want to work as well as spend their leisure time in this wonderful waterfront neighbourhood. CARGO Work combines a unique design with a high quality, contemporary working environment, offering something very special for occupiers." The creation of CARGO Work will represent the return of this long-derelict former warehouse site to commercial use. Set on the corner of Wapping Road and Cumberland Road, near the Louisiana Pub, the site has stood empty for many years. Wapping Wharf is widely acknowledged as one of Bristol's most exciting new neighbourhoods, with around 450 homes set alongside a vibrant community of independent businesses, which have put the quarter on the map as one of the city's go-to food destinations.
Andrew Hardwick, partner, commercial, Carter Jonas, said: “CARGO Work has already generated a huge amount of interest.

Lifestyle Changes that Can Have a Significant Impact on Your Health When considering changes to our lifestyles for health reasons, it can be all too easy to attempt to implement drastic alterations to habits. If you can maintain these habits, you can significantly improve your overall health, but sustainably implementing wholesale changes is easier said than done. However, there are some small steps that you can take which can substantially improve your overall health. Gradually Increase Your Activity Levels If you are worried that you might not have enough time to meet the 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise suggested by the government, or you are afraid that your current fitness levels would make this difficult, then fear not. Scientific studies have suggested that a slight increase in your activity levels can have surprising health benefits. For example, one study found that just by walking around 4,400 steps every day (equivalent to about 2 miles), the likelihood of death in the follow-up period decreased significantly. This shows that you don’t need to immediately push into top gear to become healthier or build fitness levels. Simply starting off with a 10 or 15-minute walk each day and building from there can boost your body’s response to insulin, decrease stress and help lay the foundations for a healthier lifestyle.
Eat Your Greens We were undoubtedly informed of the benefits of eating a healthy and balanced diet while growing up, but even minor tweaks to your food intake may bring some health benefits. For example, some studies have suggested that eating just a single serving of leafy greens like kale or spinach could have a protective effect on your memory. Additionally, leafy greens are a valuable source of the nutrient vitamin K. Some research suggests this nutrient could play a role in fitness levels. For example, one study found that those with lower levels of the vitamin had more trouble walking a quarter-mile than those with the recommended amount. Visit a Doctor This might seem like an obvious suggestion if you are struggling with the symptoms of illness or injury, but you’d be surprised at how many people fail to visit a doctor when they need to. It is all too common for people to go to the doctor, leading to complications further down the line. Additionally, it is essential to get regular check-ups with a medical professional to ensure that you are as healthy as possible. If you do not see a doctor routinely, consider booking a private health assessment with Echelon Health. Small Actions Pay Big Dividends Ultimately, the lifestyle tweaks listed above are simple changes that can significantly improve your health. Overall, you do not need to make drastic changes to your habits to begin your journey to a healthier lifestyle. While the tips above may not get you running a marathon or a rock-hard body, they can provide the building blocks needed to build a healthier, more active lifestyle. These changes are easy to implement, but research suggests that they could disproportionately improve your overall wellbeing.

Granting Wishes for Jessie May Jessie May/ is delighted to announce support from the online platform ‘Wishy’https://wishy. org.uk/. Jessie May is a hospice at home care charity that provides specialist palliative and respite care to terminally ill children, and their families, across the South West. A specialist Jessie May nurse will provide nursing care to terminally ill children with extremely complex medical needs in their home. Wishy is an online service that allows people to support charities of their choice with ease and simplicity. It allows smaller charities to be noticed and given more of a voice. The donator can choose how their money is used by the charity. The contributor may wish to give £65 for a specialist nurse to provide an hour of clinical support, or perhaps £25 for a memory box after a child had passed away. Liam Summers, Founder of Wishy, was keen to help Jessie May by providing an alternative stream of vital income.
“When Wishy was set up, we hoped that we would be able to work with charities like Jessie May. Having them on the platform and helping them to grant wishes on a daily basis is not only an honour, but a fantastic opportunity for us to help them provide opportunities they might not have been able to elsewhere. They are an amazing charity, and we are so humbled by the work they do daily. An impressive team, and we are proud to be a supporter. It's a difficult time for everyone, and hopefully we can help a little to make things better for the people they support.” Lindsey Horton, Corporate Partnerships Officer at Jessie May, spoke highly about this new way of giving, “Who doesn’t want to believe in the power of a wish? We all do, and at Jessie May, we are always looking for new ways to raise vital funds. We were delighted to be approached by Wishy to be part of their platform, as we believe it will become a popular way to donate to charities. You no longer have to wish up on a star, you have Wishy instead and your support will help a local family when they need it the most. Thank you so much, it means the world to us”.
