ANTI BULLYING WEEK 2022

Parents, carers, and teachers are all encouraged to play an active role in preventing bullying during Anti-Bullying Week, which shines a light on the prob lem of bullying and provides different ways to help resolve the issue. This nationwide event takes place from November 14th to the 18th and is organised by the Anti-Bullying Alliance. Children of all ages, as well as parents and carers, are encouraged to get involved in the event and take part in activities that will help raise awareness of the issue of bullying among children, especially in schools.

The focus this year is on demonstrating different ways to support young people and providing an open platform for them to talk about any issues they have with bullying. Carers can create a safe environment where young people feel like they are able to openly talk about their feelings and problems and know that they will receive support.

A number of lesson plans and activities have been created and shared online for Anti-Bullying Week and downloading this content and making it a part of the classroom activities is a great way for teachers to get involved.

Here’s a few more details about this year’s theme. Anti-Bullying Week 2022 is coordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance. It will take place from 14 to 18 November 2022 and has the theme Reach Out. The week will kick off with Odd Socks Day on Monday 14th November, where adults and children where odd socks to celebrate what makes us all unique.

The theme of Reach Out came about following consultation with teachers and pupils by the Ati-Bully ing Alliance which coordi nates Anti-Bullying Week every year in England and Wales. Teachers and children wanted a theme that empowered them to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes.

Following the success of the campaign in 2021 – when 80% of schools marked the week, reaching over 7.5 million children and young people – Anti-Bully ing Week will remind every one whether it’s in school, at home, in the community or online, let’s reach out and show each other the support we need.

4

OUR CALL TO ACTION:

Bullying is a problem for millions of people and can make us feel hopeless. But we can change this by challenging bullying whenever we see it. This starts by reaching out to others.

Whether it’s in school, at home, in the community or online, we can reach out and show each other the support we need. Talk to someone you trust if you need to talk. Talk to someone you know is being bullied. Consider a new approach.

And it doesn’t stop with young people. From teachers to parents and influencers to politicians, we all have a responsibility to help each other reach out. Together, let’s be the change we want to see. Reflect on our own behaviour, set positive examples and create kinder communities.

BRISTOL’S THE BOTTLE YARD STUDIOS TO LAND DISNEY’S RIVALS

The new TBY2 facility near Hartcliffe is proud to announce that the first booking for our new premium facility will be the bold new eight-part saga Rivals, based on the bestselling novel by Jilly Cooper (pictured), produced for Disney+ by Happy Prince, part of ITV Studios.

Rivals is an ambitious eight-part saga full of power, betrayal and romance, based on Jilly Cooper’s iconic novel. It is part of the author’s bestselling Rutshire Chronicles, an iconic and beloved piece of British literary history, capturing the joy, drama, excess, and brazen power-grabbing of the affluent elite in 1980s England. The UK original series will premiere on Disney+ in EMEA and Asia Pacific and Star+ in Latin America.

Rivals dives head first into the cut throat world of independent television in 1986, where the shoulder pads are big and ambitions even bigger. In the fiction al upper-class county of Rutshire, a long-standing rivalry between two powerful men is about to boil over: ex-Olympian, Member of Parliament, and notorious womaniser Rupert Campbell-Black, and his Rutshire neighbour Tony Baddingham, controller of the independent TV franchise Corinium Television. As tensions rise and rivalries deepen, there are spilled secrets, forged alliances, and snatched liaisons that draw wives, lovers, colleagues, friends, and families into their battle.

12

Although Rivals is a delightfully mischievous rollercoaster ride, teeming with steamy love stories and largerthan-life characters, it also provides a 2020s perspective on the 1980s. This offers a unique and unedited exploration of a complicated moment in British history, when class, race, sex, wealth, and sexual liberation meant that there were no limits to what the very privileged few could achieve.

The lead director is BAFTA-nominated Elliot Hegarty (Ted Lasso, Cheaters, Trying), who also serves as executive producer on episodes 1-3. Eliza Mellor (The Midwich Cuckoos, Behind Her Eyes, Poldark) serves as Series Producer.

The series is written by Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Laura Wade, with a writers room that also includes: Sophie Goodhart (The Baby, Sex Education), Marek Horn, Mimi Hare & Clare Naylor (The Accidental Husband), Dare Aiyegbayo (The Dumping Ground, EastEnders), Kefi Chadwick (Looted, Avoidance), Tray Agyeman, and Sorcha Kurien Walsh (The Pink Pill).Executive producers for the series are Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Alexander Lamb for Happy Prince, Felicity Blunt, Laura Wade, Rivals author Jilly Cooper and Director of Scripted Content for Disney+ EMEA Lee Mason.

‘THE GOLDEN RULE’

; A CAREFULLY CRAFTED NEW BOOK THAT EXPLORES THE HUMANIST MORAL IDEAL OF TREATING OTHERS FAIRLY

‘The Golden Rule’ is a new book by Robin Cade https://robinbook.net/, one that explores the historic unification of a common principle used worldwide. The Golden Rule can be described as the principle of treating others how you wish to be treated yourself.

This is a sentiment that derives from biblical times, acting as a foundation for the Christian Faith. In both the Old and New Testaments, rhetoric is shared of doing “unto others”, what you wish “men should do to you”. However, the Golden Rule is not just pinpointed down to Christianity, as almost all faith traditions can interpret it, including many religions. This idea of reciprocal behaviour is an idea that surpasses personal religious beliefs, transcending into all factions of life. For example, something as simple as a smile or a friendly gesture to someone can benefit both individuals.

Robin’s diplomatic approach to the idea of the Golden Rule introduces the reader to a refreshed mindset. One where you are led to question your quality of life, and how you can approach situations in a more positive and practical light. When you prioritise humanity and understanding, you prioritise your own wellbeing.

Author Robin Cade hopes to start conversations with his findings of his research into the Golden Rule,

“The Golden Rule principle supports societies to reduce the abuse humans give to each other, to other species and to the planet itself. In the book, I explore various issues and subjects, including global waning, food waste, mental health, greed and abuse.

22
ANNOUNCING
“It is a principle that we can all endeavour to live by. Mr. Cade’s campaign to promote it is highly commendable and has my whole hearted support” - The Rt Hon Jacob Rees-Mogg MP

DO THE WORDS “SYSTEMS AND TECH” MAKE YOU ITCH?

If they do, then I can completely relate, because they had the same effect on me. However, so did the prospect of managing lots of members of staff, across different locations and different market sectors and, I must admit, for the sake of complete transparency, to having “baggage” when it came to this issue!

Let me explain… The Key Group of Companies was born as a marketing company, back in 1948 and will be 75 years old next year! Today we call that company “KPA Marketing” but, back then, it was called “Key Publicity.” Tech looked very different back in those days (I remember trying to code in DOS and resembled a baby giraffe taking its very first steps) and the company had 48 members of staff, when I joined in 1995 and, honestly, managing them was a full-time job. I came into the business, when our first child was born, because we needed flexibility as a family and because the business had grown and needed another pair of hands at the tiller.

It was a classic business of its time, very “people heavy” and I spent the whole working day, quite literally, managing people – if I had any “hands on work” to do, then this needed to be done after hours and many a weekend was spent with a young child (and often the family dog in tow) at the office.

So, when we were faced with a decision about growing the property business and I had “systems and tech” on the one hand and “chuck more people at it” on the other, even though tech is not my “area of expertise” I knew we had to give the idea a proper hearing. Luckily for me our eldest son, who came into the business like a rocket and remains so to this day (it was always going to happen really, as he was a regular visitor to the office even before he could walk), knew a lot about “systems and tech!”

We decided to look at the roles and the tasks within the business and to break them down into their constituent parts, to see whether technology could play a part. We broke these roles into 3 distinct areas:

1. Those where someone physically needed to be somewhere (at a property, at a viewing etc.) and decided that these were “boots on the ground” tasks and necessitated the physical presence of a team member.

2. Those that could be done at a desk, from a computer – and we decided that these could be carried out by a VA team member.

3. And, last but not least, those tasks that were the same every time – and we decided that these could be “systems and tech tasks.”

24

We were already, successfully, working with a group of international VAs (the term VA always sounds minimizing, because they are, most definitely, not “virtual” and make up some of the most valuable and trusted members of our team). So, we chose a system that could integrate with them, as well as us and, one which incorporated workflow soft ware, to enable us to have a sequence of tasks, in a specified path, completed by different team members.

I could spend large amounts of time detailing which system and what pieces of tech we use but, the truth is that our business will be very different from yours and there are lots of pieces of tech and many systems out there on the market. We wanted one which had the capacity to integrate workflow software, as stated above, (but it may be that you don’t need this in your business) also, we knew that we needed a platform which could expand and grow, as we did – and one which would work just as well in the short to medium term, as it would in the long term.

My top 7 tips when considering systems, tech and VAs:

1. Start with the end in mind. Sounds cheesy maybe, but it’s true. There is nothing worse than wasting time and money on a system that will not grow with you.

2. Stratify the tasks within your business and look at which ones can be done from a distance, which ones can be automated, and which ones need a team member (or yourself) physically present, somewhere, in order to complete them.

3. Break down these tasks and create checklists, videos and “how to guides” on how to complete them.

4. If you decide to go down the VA route, then interview thoroughly. They may be team members at a distance, but they are still team members, and the same rules and values should apply.

5. Choose technology based on your business needs – all tech should be driven by your needs and processes, rather than what someone else suggests you need for your business.

6. Engage all users from the get-go. This may sound obvious, but technology requires the buy in, from the people who will be using it.

7. Don’t put style over substance. The system needs to do what you need it to first and foremost.

We now run 6 different businesses, with 14 team members and a fully system ized technology solution. When you think back to my earlier experience of 48 members of staff, no time to breathe (let alone grow the business) and an “inward cringe” about repeating this situation, then I’d say that systems and tech have been an incredible addition to our business. It could be that it would be great for yours – it’s worth considering!

PRINCESS VICTORIA STREET PEDESTRIAN ZONE TO MADE PERMANENT

Following a successful trial, plans to make Princess Victoria Street’s pedestrian zone permanent have been approved.

From August 2021 onwards, a section of Princess Victoria Street will be closed to road vehicles between the hours of 11am to 5pm daily.

Since then, hospitality venues have placed tables and chairs onto the road for outdoor eating and drinking and more people have been walking and cycling to the high street in Clifton. Traffic data has also shown that fewer cars are travelling through Clifton Village as a whole.

Now the scheme has been approved, detailed designs will be drawn up to keep the road closure, retain space for businesses to trade outside, and improve the public realm. Funding opportunities for the scheme will also be explored.

Princess Victoria Street is one of a series of areas to have changes to the road trialled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting from the need for better social distancing.

Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “Over the past year Princess Victoria Street has been buzzing with people making the most of the traffic-free street to walk and cycle with confidence, do their shopping in a relaxed environment, and take advantage of all the outdoor eating and drinking.

“We’ve studied the traffic data carefully, alongside the feedback to our commu nity engagement and consultations, and are confident these measures will help Princess Victoria Street to attract more visitors, reduce pollution and have a positive impact on the area as a whole.

“It will mean we can replace the temporary measures with smarter long-term infrastructure that will improve the street scene for everyone.”

Councillor Don Alexander, Cabinet Member for Transport, commented: “When we asked local people about what they wanted for their high street, they put safer streets with cleaner air high on the list. I’m really pleased the traffic data shows more people and cyclists are travelling through Princess Victoria Street and that overall car journeys through Clifton Village are reducing.

“That’s why I’m delighted the pedestrian zone will be made permanent, meaning there is more space for people to travel actively and enjoy outdoor hospitality.”

The daily timed closure on Princess Victoria Street will remain in place while funding options are developed to make the closure permanent with higherquality materials.

THIS WEEK’S ROUND-UP OF LOCAL NEWS IN BRISLINGTON

ARMISTICE DAY AT ARNOS VALE:

Arnos Vale Cemetery is holding its annual Remembrance ceremony at the Great War Memorial at Soldiers' Corner on Friday 11th November. The ceremony will include readings from local organisations and school children, prayers for the fallen, and wreath laying. The ceremo ny will begin at 10.50am. A two minutes silence will be held at 11am sharp. Local residents may also be interested to know that there are 18 war graves in St Mary Redcliffe Cemetery opposite. We are currently working with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to install signage by the entrance.

DAMAGED FENCING BY BRISLINGTON BROOK:

For quite some time, the wooden fencing that runs alongside the Brislington Brook between Water Lane and Tesco has been badly damaged. Last week we were able to meet up with Tesco management to discuss the issue. Tesco have promised to come up with a more robust design, that will hopefully stand the test of time. We’ll update you when we have more news.

WELCOMING SPACES ARE NOW OPEN:

The first of Bristol's Welcoming Spaces are now open. These are spaces people can go to during the winter months for support and warmth. Each venue will be responding to community priorities which means what happens in each space will vary, but is likely to include Wi-Fi, access, electrical charging points, social activities and community meals. There will also be support and practical advice provided by city-wide organisations. More information about Welcoming Spaces and where to find your nearest one is available here: https://www.bristol. gov.uk/residents/people-and-communities/cost-of-living-support?tab=welcomingspaces More spaces will be added over the coming weeks. If you’d like to make a difference in our community during the cost of living crisis and you have some time to spare, there are also a range of volunteering opportunities available through Can Do Bristol: https:// candobristol.co.uk

Opportunities range from befriending and peer support, cooking, driving and helping at Welcoming Spaces. For advice and guidance on cost of living, visit the council’s new cost of living support hub here: https://www.bristol.gov.uk/ residents/people-and-communities/ cost-of-living-support?tab=welcoming spaces Wyevale Enforcement update:

Time is running out to have your say on the planning appeal at Wyevale. Earlier in the year, Bristol City Council issued 4 Planning Enforcement Notices against the owners of the former Wyevale Garden Centre site on the A4 Bath Road in Brislington West as a result of unauthorised and inappropriate development on Greenbelt land. Predictably, the owners decided to appeal the enforcement notices and so the issue will now be decided by the government’s Planning Inspectorate.

You now have the opportunity to make representations. You can submit your views online using the Appeals Casework Portal: Here

You can also email your submission to: teame3@planninginspectorate.gov.uk

Any views must be submitted by 15 November 2022.

CLIMATE ACTION PLAN TO REDUCE EMISSIONS

“The extreme weather events of this year show that climate change is here and affecting us already, but it’s important to remember there is still time for us to act and the UK is well-placed to set an example to the world in addressing the causes and consequences of climate change.”

North Somerset Council has approved plans to lower North Somerset’s greenhouse gas emissions and address the climate emergency.

After declaring a climate emergency in 2019, the council produced a climate change strategy and action plan to re duce emissions across North Somerset, including those created by council-run buildings and services.

Following the successful completion of several projects identified in the original action plan, an updated version has been developed to reflect the next key areas of focus.

Cllr Bridget Petty, Executive Member for the climate emergency, said: “We’re working to create a thriving and sus tainable North Somerset and our re freshed climate emergency action plan reconfirms the council’s commitment to achieve net zero by 2030.”

The council has already carried out several projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in North Somerset, including running a solar panel purchasing scheme for residents, replacement of streetlights with LED lighting, funding for energy efficiency projects in care homes, and improved insulation for low-income households.

“Many of the actions needed to reduce emissions can also improve our lives in other ways through co-benefits – for example by improving our health and wellbeing, creating community resilience and reducing costs – and we decided it was important that the action plan update reflects this,” added Cllr Petty.

THIS WINTER, SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE COUNCIL AND WARM AND WELL WILL BE BRINGING THERMAL

CAMERA TECHNOLOGY TO LOCAL HOUSEHOLDS

South Gloucestershire Council wants to help residents save energy by loaning out thermal imaging cameras. These cameras will help people identify areas around their homes where they are losing heat. The cameras are easy to use and will be available to borrow from libraries across South Gloucestershire. They come with step-by-step guidelines to ensure residents can make the most of the energy-saving knowledge they provide.

Launching the scheme, Councillor Rachael Hunt, cabinet member for communities at South Gloucestershire Council, said: “We are one of the first authorities in the country to introduce these cameras to borrow from libraries, to help people reduce their energy use by identifying areas where they can take action. Not only will this save people money, but it will help reduce energy use and contribute towards the success of our climate emergency goals here in South Gloucestershire.”

The cameras are being supplied in partnership with the Warm and Well service, which is run by local energy charity Severn Wye. They provide an extensive range of energy advice through their freephone adviceline and advocacy services and administer a range of grant funding for energy efficiency improve ments. Those who use the thermal imaging cameras in their properties can call the adviceline for advice on dealing with any problems they uncover.

Jacqui Harris, Project Manager at Severn Wye, is enthusiastic about the project. She said: “We’re really pleased to be supporting this scheme, which offers something different to lots of the energy efficiency support currently avail able. Using a thermal imaging camera will give residents an insight into how they can make their homes more energy efficient, but it will also empower them to look deeper into how they can make energy changes at home, and hopefully get back a feeling of control during this energy crisis.”

HOUSING NOW A BUYERS’ MARKET

Housing in the Bristol area has now fully-flipped from a sellers to a buyers' market as the cost of living crisis bites, according to a property agent with offices in North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

Estate agent Andrew Simmonds says the hike in interest rates last Thursday to their highest level in 14 years raising mortgage payments, has already had a noticeable impact on the market.

An estate agents in Backwell, North Somerset and Country Property in Chipping Sodbury is reporting that there are now more people trying to sell their homes than there are people actively trying to buy with sales now beginning to slow.

He continues “For a long time in the villages around Bristol houses have had a queue of potential buyers almost as soon as they go on to the market. Really good properties in the best locations were selling without really being fully marketed.

“There were also many examples of peo ple paying over the asking price in order to secure the property that they really wanted. In the last few months that has totally changed.

The rise in interest rates last week was well signalled so we have seen the market evolve in the last few months and weeks. But it has now totally flipped to a position where sellers will have to work harder if they want their home to sell in a reasonable time-scale.

“All the indicators are that as a result house prices will fall. In some ways there has been too much heat in the market this year and this is a re-adjustment and as usual it will vary from location to location.”

Mr Simmonds says the rental market is still strong in the area with a shortage of accommodation for the number of people looking for a place to live.

He said: “The greater Bristol area has a major student population who take up a lot of the rental properties available. It is also an attractive area for relocation and in recent times many people found it eas ier to sell elsewhere and rent locally so they were in a position to move quickly for a house when it became available.

“We are still finding a good level of enquiries for all rental properties and there is no sign at the moment of rental levels falling. With more people finding it tough to get a mortgage the rental sector will stay strong for landlords and difficult for those looking for the right accommodation.

THE CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS THAT REDUCE THE CHANCE OF SELLING YOUR HOME

3. DECOR THAT COVERS UP ATTRACTIVE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS

Can Christmas decorations reduce your chances of selling your home? Unfor tunately, the answer is yes. Although a bit of festive cheer has never harmed a house sale, there are several big nos where it comes to decorating fro Christmas if you're also conducting home viewings.

If you want to find how to sell a house faster around Christmas time, follow these tips on decorations to avoid.

1. COLORED, FLASHING LIGHTS

Fairy lights make your home more attractive during the dark season, but careful when choosing them. Estate agents warn that ‘colored, flashing lights aren’t everyone’s preference, and whilst some like the spirit they bring, they can put people off.’ Top tip is to ‘opt for a more tailored and sophisticated palette with white lights. This creates a more neutral, all-round aesthetic appealing to more.’ The best Christmas lights are always the more neutral ones if you want to sell.

2. LARGE EXTERIOR DECORATIONS

That inflatable Santa needs to go, sadly, if you want to sell. Agents advice is clear: ‘avoid the large inflatable decora tions or reindeer on the roof.’ Instead, ‘keep it classy with a single welcoming door wreath or holly and ivy. Less is more when it comes to exterior decorations, especially if you have a for-sale sign in the garden.’

If you have so many decorations up that people can’t actually see the shape of the house, or are unable to make out attractive timber beams on your ceiling, you’re in trouble. Be mindful of covering up ‘any structure or feature in your home which may be of interest to potential buyers. This could be something as simple as an oak stair rail or the mantel piece. Remember: less is more.’

4. WINDOW DECORATIONS THAT BLOCK OUT NATURAL LIGHT

Christmas window displays can look great, but if they take up all of your win dows, your home will feel dark and din gy. Natural light is essential for viewings, so make sure your decorating efforts don’t block any natural light.’ he also advises being mindful of not blocking out natural light with your Christmas tree –‘try placing your holiday pride away from any windows, and if you must, make sure the natural light still flows in.’

5. LOUD DECORATIONS ON A NEIGHBOR’S HOME

This one is trickier than the others to resolve, but ‘unfortunately it’s not just your own decorations that can put buy ers off, it’s your neighbors’ too. Neigh bors are a huge part for people moving house, and to see loud and garish decorations next door could certainly put potential buyers off.’

This may or may not work, but ‘If you know your neighbours well, perhaps just let them know you are trying to sell over the festive period and to be mindful of potential buyers.’

NEW ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR AT HAINES WATTS BRISTOL

Under the leadership of managing direc tor Matthew Bracher, staff numbers at Haines Watts Bristol have grown from 20 to 60 in the past five years, with turnover rising threefold in the same period.

The company is forging a reputation for promoting young talent, having recently established a scheme with St Brendan’s College to recruit and train up to four new apprentices each year straight out of sixth form.

The Bristol office of accountancy firm

Haines Watts has announced the appointment of Conor O’Sullivan as associate director.

Conor has worked with the city centre SME specialist accountancy practice for the past six years after joining as a trainee straight after an apprenticeship with a small local firm.

Now, aged just 29 he joins two other associate directors, alongside three full directors, in the company’s management team.

“I’ve worked really hard to achieve this promotion, so it’s nice to be recognised for all my efforts,” he said. “I’m grateful to the directors for putting their faith in me and I’m looking forward to the added responsibility of scaling up my client-fac ing duties.

“It’s also satisfying to be part of a business which nurtures young talent and is unafraid to put people outside their comfort zone, recognising the longerterm benefits of investing time and effort in training.

“We have a strong team here and I’m keen to continue playing my part in helping it, and the services we offer our clients, to develop.”

Even five years ago, Conor was tasked with solo visits to clients as a 21-yearold. He said the experience, combined with his time as a talented professional footballer – before being released from service with Southampton FC aged 18 – had left him resilient and confident in taking on new challenges.

“I’d certainly say that stepping outside my comfort zone has been a crucial part of my progression,” he said. “That’s not something that you’ll experience with many companies.

“However there’s a culture here that if you give young people responsibility then they will rise to the challenge. I like to think I embody that philosophy and I’d like to be an example to other young accountants, to show that they should set their sights high and recognise the value of ambition.”

Matthew Bracher, managing director at Haines Watts Bristol, said: “Conor has worked diligently for us since he joined, particularly over the past year or so during a time of transition for the company. So we are delighted to reward him with this well-deserved promotion.

“He’s going to be an integral part of our client-facing work going forward as we develop our base of SME businesses in the Bristol city region. We’re excited to watch his continued progression.”
