Avon and Somerset Police and the Role of a Special Constable The last Police Officer you saw could have been a Special Constable from Avon and Somerset Police
In their day job they may have been leading a project to build the new school close to you, driving the train you took on your commute to work, working self-employed from home during the day or answering the call you placed to book your travel insurance for your break away. Our volunteers come from all walks of life. One of our Special Inspectors Kelly MacBryde gives an insight to why she joined the organisation. I’ve been a Special for 14 years, and the time has flown by! I'm enjoying it just as much now as I did when I first joined! I found out about the Special Constabulary when I saw a "Could You" advert on the TV and was interested to find out more. I was working in an office and I thought that doing something completely different would be a good idea (and it was!). The idea of working as part of a larger team, learning new skills and taking myself out of my comfort zone all appealed to me.
4
I'd always thought that Special Constables just policed low key events but as a response officer in Bristol, I attend the same jobs as my regular colleagues. As a Special Constable, you never know what's going to happen and jobs rarely turn out to be what you're expecting, you often formulate a plan of how to deal with an incident and then have to change it completely when you get there. I thought I might miss going down the pub on a Friday night but now I'd rather volunteer for a shift, I could end up with a suspect in custody or helping someone having a mental health crisis get to A&E. I love the camaraderie and the fact that everyone looks out for one another, you work with so many different people, there's rarely a dull moment! Why not come along and make a difference, to support the communities in which we all live and work. Bristol Beacon announces ‘Future Proof’ programme Make Space For Creative Development
Bristol Beacon are proud to present an eighteen-month, talent development programme, called ‘Future Proof’, a flagship mentoring scheme for the next wave of 18-25 year olds ready to make moves into and focus their creative journeys towards the music industries. Professionals at Bristol Beacon and from the wider music industry will be on hand to help develop and support the next generation of upcoming musicians and artists, who will also have the opportunity to feed into the evolving vision for Bristol Beacon. The scheme will be running for the first time in 2022/23 and starts next month, in March 2022, and will run right up to Bristol Beacon’s reopening in 2023 - following the major transformation of the venue in the last few years. Through the collaborative ‘Future Proof’ programme, both the members of the collective and those at Bristol Beacon, itself, will positively learn, develop and change. The cohort will be supported in their development through advice and guidance from industry professionals, a personal development plan, an opportunity to give feedback, ideas and ask questions, be given the tools and experience to connect and collaborate with other like-minded creatives and have resources at their fingertips. There will be 1-2-1 mentoring sessions for those involved, who will be paired with an experienced industry professional. In addition, there will be group sessions, a personal grant of up to £1000, which can be spent on studio access, equipment, and other creative costs and seed funding of up to £1000. Another perk will be free access to all of Bristol Beacon’s shows, industry workshops, masterclasses and training. 6

Bristol Beacon’s Creative Producer, Owen Parry said of the scheme: “This special project has come at an exciting time where we can work alongside early-stage creatives in the lead-up to our venue’s exciting reopening. The idea is that through these relationships, we can learn and grow together by supporting each other’s development. We look forward to connecting and collaborating with local music creators and welcome applications from all backgrounds. The project we have designed will help open up access to exploring careers in music for people aged 18-25, particularly those who are traditionally underrepresented; and to facilitate creative innovation with new and diverse ideas.”

Ruby Jeans The Parade Liv Garriock and Mark Pummell diversified with Ruby Jeans Coffee Shop to remain open during the Coronavirus pandemic and became very much part of the community selling essential and artisan food and ingredients as well as their take away coffees, teas and cakes. "Its become part of the High Street and a resource that people continue to go to. It's established itself and it's sustaining it's own clientele regardless of opening up this new premises" said Mark, as he refers to 'Ruby Jeans The Parade', a new independent restaurant that has opened in Shirehampton. It took a bit longer than planned to open up 'Ruby Jeans The Parade' and the omicron variant of Covid has played it's part but Liv and Mark persevered and pushed on through to open up on 17th December 2021. "It's been a huge learning curve" said Liv "And it didn't go as planned" added Mark. "Maybe with hindsight we should have waited but we were conscious that people wanted to have somewhere to go for their Christmas parties. Traditionally Christmas is good time for hospitality so that's why we wanted to be open but omicron happened and people started to become a lot more cautious going out and socialising. They didn't want to be in isolation over Christmas".
Mark takes charge of front of house, dealing with customers whilst Liv is in charge of the kitchen and back of house. "We want to try and offer different things throughout the year to bring people back" said Liv. "We've had a Valentine's weekend and we have Mothering Sunday coming up where we will be doing High Tea. Then there is Easter and hot cross buns. We'll be doing our popular supper clubs in the future but we are establishing ourselves first so we can then have time to focus on new ideas" said Mark. "Once our function room upstairs is completed we'll be able to hire it out to the community for events and celebrations. We might even have a cheese and wine tasting event. The ideas are endless. We have already started our parent and toddler event on a Tuesday morning. We are very much a family friendly place and children are always welcome. We are also looking at an IT help session too".
I had to move our conversation onto food as I am a bit of a fan of their brunch and they are able to provide for my dietary health needs as I live with Crohns Disease. A lot of 'The Parade' menu is made from fresh ingredients, meals are made from scratch, no frozen food. They wouldn't have it any other way but I Social distancing, isolation and Covid-19 are wanted them to explain about the sharing still having a knock on effect in hospitality menu as it is certainly unusual. "It's our but the industry is recovering slowly. "Almost favourite way of eating and a new style that is everyone who has come in has loved it, becoming very popular. Our time in New saying The Parade is what Shire needs. The Zealand, Auckland in particular, it's an excitement from the local community before exceptionally multicultural place with so many we opened was extremely positive. We are amazing influences with food and taste. You seeing people come through the doors, the share a little bit of everything with plenty of locals and the regulars you know every week choice and we wanted to offer something but I wouldn't say it was as much as promised different on our menu" said Mark but we understand the pandemic has made people wary." said Liv. 18
"Our menu is about 99 percent gluten free with the exception of sourdough, brioche buns and some pasta but we can offer alternatives. You can have delicious tasting food without gluten" said Liv and I totally agree with her on this. Then there was the question about the Sunday Roast Dinners as a couple people mentioned to me it was a tad expensive? "We are in line price wise with venues of equivalent food quality and we did our market research. We peel our own vegetables to cook that day, make our own cauliflower cheese and home-made gravy. Our beef is smoked for 3 hours and we then slow cook it over night for about 12 hours. The chicken we marinade in butter, herbs, lemon, salt and pepper over night and then cooked normally. The nut roast is home-made with mushrooms, carrot, celery, onion, garlic, walnuts, almonds, cashews with seasoning and it's really tasty. Other places might be cheaper but we don't know where they source their ingredients and with the cost of living increasing these places may need to put their prices up" said Mark **
"We've been asked if we plan to do a full English breakfast and we sort of resisted it initially because there are a few other places in the village where you can get a full English. However, due to the continued requests we will offer something slightly different called 'The Ruby Jeans Breakfast Stack' and there will be a vegetarian and vegan option too" said Liv. And finally when will outside dining begin? "We really want to make the outside usable but it's privately owned land and the Landlord of that land doesn't want us to use it. They haven't spoken to us directly about it, but we need to negotiate with them because in our contract it says that we must keep that land, tidy, free from rubbish, weeds, which implies a level of upkeep, even though it's not our land. It's a very unknown situation at the moment as our plans for this have basically stepped backwards for the time being." said Mark. You can find Ruby Jeans The Parade at 3 - 4 The Parade Shirehampton Bristol BS11 9TS
As 'Ruby Jeans The Parade' provide menus for very much everyone I did ask if they'd be introducing anything new to their menu?

LYDE GREEN PRIMARY GAINS ACCREDITATION FOR ENCOURAGING SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL TO SCHOOL South Gloucestershire primary school has been recognised for showing excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable and active travel. Lyde Green Primary School has received a Bronze accreditation this term from national scheme Modeshift Stars, which is aimed at helping schools, businesses and other organisations create active travel plans to cut congestion and air pollution. Will Roberts, CEO of Castle School Education Trust (CSET) which runs Lyde Green Primary School, said: “We are very pleased to receive this accreditation from Modeshift. The scheme is an excellent way of embedding and promoting sustainable and active travel to school which is important for cutting pollution and congestion at our school gates. “We are passionate about healthy living choices for our students and part of that is encouraging cycling and walking to school. We are now looking at implementing this scheme across all of our seven schools in South Gloucestershire.” 20
The Castle School in Thornbury, also run by CSET, was awarded the accreditation too and is the first secondary school in South Gloucestershire to receive the accolade. FOCUS ON: Talbot Road closure
More fires at Wyevale:
Tesco car meet update:
Residents are rightly concerned about the number of fires at Wyevale in recent weeks. The Council’s Neighbourhood Enforcement team have asked us to relay contact details so that local residents can easily report any incident, not only fires but also information about the dumping of waste.
If you live near the store, you will be only too aware that Sunday nights have become intolerable with noisy, late night car meets in the car park. We received numerous complaints from local residents which prompted us to get in touch with the police, Council and Tesco in order to find a solution.
Using this number will ensure an alert is provided to the team, causing an officer to attend the site in question (if available): NET Going Now Number: 0117 9222 500 Reference to quote: 424877 (Complainants will have to provide their name and phone number). Read all about the latest fires here:

Tesco management have agreed to fit barriers across the entrances to the car park, which will be lowered when the store closes on Sunday evenings. This will take some time to implement so in the interim they will place vehicles at the entrances to the car park to stop the car meets. More details here:
Talbot Road closure: Drivers are advised to avoid the area as the gas main is replaced on Talbot Road. This work is scheduled to commence at his week and is due to be completed by 24 June. We will keep you updated if details change. Litter pick at nature reserve: The Friends of Callington Road Nature Reserve have organised a litter pick and bramble clearance on Saturday 19th February. All tools and kit will be provided, including gloves. Meet at the pond at 10am. Everyone welcome! Click here Sandy Park zebra crossing:
Date: Monday 7 March
A local resident has highlighted safety concerns over the zebra crossing on Sandy Park Road. Due to the availability of car parking spaces in front of the adjacent post office, vehicles regularly reverse over the crossing when leaving these spaces. We were in touch with the council about this issue quite some time ago and an officer told us they were working on a solution that possibly included strategically-located bollards to prevent vehicles performing such a dangerous manoeuvre. This would have resulted in the loss of one parking space in front of the post office but there is plenty of on-street parking and a public car park, Repton Road Car Park, less than 100 metres away. We have asked council officers for a progress report.
Time: 6pm – 8pm. Book a place online here
Housing forum for tenants: Another round of Housing Forums for council tenants is taking place online in March. Residents are invited to come along and find out about the outcome of the recent investing in council homes consultation and how residents views have helped shape the 30-year plan for council housing. If you would like to attend a forum, you can book a place using the attached links. Following registration, further details will be sent to confirm your booking and provide the Zoom link/ dial-in number to join the meeting.

Vehicle parking charges to launch in three Bristol parks
New parking charges to raising investment for Bristol parks are set to begin a Snuff Mills, Blaise Castle Estate and Oldbury Court Estate next month.
All the revenue from vehicle parking will be used for improving and maintaining the parks which have seen a large increase in visitors since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. About 60% of people say they visit their local park at least once a week, with other visitors coming from outside the Bristol boundaries. Most people in the city live within walking distance of green space, and exemptions will be in place in the car parks for blue badge holders, motorbikes and cyclists.
“These new charges will contribute to making the funds available to maintain what we have and, where we can, expand that offer by improving facilities and introducing more events. We’ve also taken steps to help mitigate the impact on residential areas near these parks and will enforce parking restrictions in the area to protect all from obstructive parking. We’d love to see an increase in people choosing to walk, cycle and take public transport to our parks where they can, and for those who choose to drive there will be well maintained car parking facilities.” The new charges launch on 3rd of March and will operate between 9am and 6pm every day.
A number of waiting restrictions, including double and single yellow lines, have also been installed in surrounding roads to help manage parking at the sites and residential areas.
Car users will be charged £1 per hour or £3 for five hours, with alternative charges for minibuses or coaches. However this will pose even more of a squeeze on our budgets as we see our bills and food prices rise as well.
Councillor Ellie King, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Communities and Bristol One City, said online: “Our parks play a very important role in our city’s health. They’re not only huge contributors to our natural landscape but are sanctuaries for us all that boost both mental and physical health. We’re blessed to have so many green and open spaces, but there must be a means to invest and maintain them all.
At Blaise Castle and Oldbury Court car parks, overflow parking may be implemented at busy times, and these will also be subject to the same charges as the main car parks.
26
Further information associated with the parking charges at these three sites can be found on each park’s page on the council website.

The former Grange School site in Warmley progresses South Gloucestershire Council has agreed £3.84 million of funding to create new gymnastics and netball facilities on the former Grange school site in Warmley. The work is currently underway on the site to enable new homes, a new primary school and improved walking and cycling infrastructure to connect the new developments to the wider community. This latest addition of new sports facilities will add further enhancements to the development and is also a big step forward in aiding Majestic Gymnastics’ efforts to find a new home. The planning application is due to be submitted soon for the refurbishment of the former school sports hall. The proposed works include the addition of a single storey extension, the addition of a café, improved accessibility and general re-purposing of the existing facilities. The existing building fabric will also be repaired and upgraded. The site is already home to the Digitech School and on the southern part of the land, the council has identified the location for a new two-form entry primary school, which will ultimately accommodate 420 children. The aim is for the school’s construction to begin in 2023 and for the first pupils to be able to start lessons in September 2024. 28
The northside playing field will be redeveloped for housing, generating between 150-200 units. 35 per cent of these properties will be affordable and a further proportion will be custom/self-build homes, for which there is a growing demand in South Gloucestershire. We anticipate that, subject to the formal planning process, people will be able to move into new homes here in 2025. Work is continuing to progress well on the wider site, a contractor has been appointed for the initial demolition works including removal of fire damaged elements. Detailed design of the new bridge, including the btaining of planning consent, is underway and we are aiming for installation by the end of Spring 2023. Leader of South Gloucestershire Council Cllr Toby Savage said: “We’ve held a long-standing ambition to redevelop this brownfield site in Warmley and I am delighted we have been able to approve this funding which will provide excellent new sports facilities alongside the plans for new housing and a brand-new school. The Council has been working hard to help the outstanding Majestics Gymnastics Club find a new home and this decision is certainly a step in the right direction.
“The vision for this new community is for it to be socially inclusive, connected to the wider area and have a range of recreational opportunities and open spaces for the benefit of the people of Warmley. The mix of different types of homes will help meet the need for quality houses for local people and the next generation of this growing community. “As plans come forward and planning permission is sought, the community will have the opportunity to have their say on proposals. We are already engaged with local people, which has helped shape our vision for the site and how it links to the wider Warmley area. We look forward to further developing the detailed plans and to sharing them with the community.” Candice Littleton and Michelle George, owners of Majestics Gymnastics, said: “It is fantastic news that the Council has been able to make this substantial investment to deliver brand new and exciting sporting facilities at the former Grange School. We are truly grateful for all the effort the Council continues to put into helping us find a permanent home, with this investment being a very big step.”
The new sports elements will cost £3.84 million and are part funded by a Section 106 developer contribution of £435,000. The total investment for the Grange site is now £10.51 million including grant funding of £4.65 million from Homes England and £2.02 million from the Brownfield Land Release Fund via the West of England Combined Authority’s (WECA) One Public Estate programme.

HMO INSPECTIONS At a recent HMO inspection, with a Senior HMO Inspector for Bristol City Council, we were really chuffed to receive comments such as “…I’ve never seen this document on an HMO Board before, that’s a real gold star” and “… rarely if ever do I see properties as well managed as this, you should be really proud.” We work hard, we make it our business to keep abreast of compliance and we communicate with our Landlords and Tenants often and well – but it is always gratifying to have your work appreciated, nonetheless. Remember that Inspections should be an opportunity for you to work with the HMO Inspector, to provide a superior product and to ensure that everyone is kept safe; they should be on the same “page” as you and, if you are on top of your game, up to date with compliance and regulations and doing your job properly, then there is absolutely no Rental yields for HMOs can be impressive reason why this shouldn’t be the case. We’ve and significantly higher than other property models. Demand is high in certain areas, with had occasions where officers were incorrect about issues and, where we’ve asked for City rents being beyond the reach of many clarification ourselves – everyone is human, and tenants new to an area choosing co-living, as a way to make new friends and renting and regulations change often and can be confusing. well into their thirties and beyond. With this in mind, it’s easy to see whyProperty Investors choose HMOs, as there is a plentiful market for them and they achieve good returns. However, HMOs are heavily regulated and compliance heavy and they are certainly not easy money! Many Landlords find it hard to keep up to date with ever changing compliance and are constantly concerned about falling foul of regulations and getting into hot water with their local authority. With this in mind, it’s easy to see why lots of Landlords view HMO Inspections and HMO Officers in the same way as some people view root canal and a trip to the dentist! 32
•
Run a tight ship – good and effective communication keeps everyone happy, safe and knowing where they stand and what to expect.
•
Foster an environment of open communication with your tenants wherever possible, where they can come to you if things go wrong, or something gets broken (either due to wear and tear or accidental damage) without fear of reprisal. Not being told about an issue through fear of blame, which has escalated, can be far more dangerous and/or costly than knowing about it at the outset.
If your car is serviced regularly, well looked after and your tax and insurance are up to date, then you have no reason to dread an MOT – this should be the same with an HMO Inspection. Get it right, take it seriously, keep everyone safe and you’ll be surprised how much of a breeze it will all feel! Here are some of our top tips to make HMO Inspections less daunting: •
•
Take the time, treat your property portfolio like a business and keep up to date with Keep on top of Compliance and compliance and regulations. If you do things Regulations. Find a good, reliable properly and your HMO is managed source – whether that’s online, face efficiently and safely then you have nothing to face networking, a subscription, to feel apprehensive about, when it comes to trawling the internet, engaging a qualified Inspections! and experienced HMO Managing Agent – whatever works for you, take the time and make the effort, know your regs – you cannot outsource your responsibility and it’s your name on the title deeds and your tenants, make sure you know how to keep them, your property and yourself safe! Carry out regular inspections. Don’t rely on your “good relationship with the tenants”. Learn what to look for and do it regularly. Keep on top of maintenance. That old adage of “a stitch in time saves nine” is so true here. Know your local council’s Code of Best Practice and respond in a timely fashion to maintenance requests.

Simple ways to save money on petrol and diesel as the price goes up!
With fuel prices at an all time high as the cost of living crisis deepens, many people will be looking for quick ways to save money. Petrol jumped to 148.02p per litre last week rising above the previous record high of 147.72p on November 21 last year. Adding to the misery for motorists, diesel costs also rose to a new record high of 151.57 pence per litre. Six simple ways you can save fuel which can ultimately save you money, 1. Be gentle with the accelerator and use a high gear Gentle acceleration is important in fuel-efficient driving and the ‘the biggest secret’ to achieving high miles per gallon is driving in the highest possible gear for your vehicle while staying in the speed limit. Remember that the faster an engine spins, the more fuel it uses. 2. Dress for the weather It may be winter and motorists are more likely to crank up the heating but using the heating and air conditioning uses engine power and therefore fuel consumption. Instead, we advised that motorists dress for the weather. 3. Empty your boot The more weight you’re carrying in your car, the more fuel you’ll be using. 36
4. Having a roof rack According to statistics from the Energy Saving Trust, an empty roof rack will add 16% drag to your car when travelling at 75mph and a roof box will add 39%. Both make your vehicle much less fuel efficient. 5. Keep your car well looked after The RAC suggests that regular maintenance and servicing will improve the efficiency of your car, including making sure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure. Underinflated and overinflated tyres can affect your fuel economy. 6. Keep moving Slowing down and having to accelerate again uses more fuel, so motorists are advised to drive smoothly and keep their car moving. It’s important to remain in gear as the fuel cut-off switch in a fuel injection engine is then activated, meaning virtually no fuel is used while braking. Driving up hills also destroys fuel economy so motorists are advised to accelerate a little before you reach a hill then ease off as you drive up.

Moon calendar 2022 mark your diaries for new moons, full moons, and lunar eclipses
The moon calendar 2022 is filled with all the dates of new moons, full moons, lunar and solar eclipses—and which sign of the zodiac they fall in. In light of the gravitas of these events in astrology, it's definitely worth marking them down in your calendar ahead of time.
Here is a list of the dates through the year that are significant to moon gazers and the superstitious.
Your Moon sign is an indicator, in your astrology birth chart, of your deepest desires and needs. On top of what it shows in our chart, the moon is also an important factor in the astrological events in 2022.
APRIL New moon—Friday, April 1st Full moon—Saturday April 16th New moon—Saturday, April 30th Solar eclipse—Saturday, April 30th
The moon and the lunar cycle have been a source of fascination since humanity began. Many still believe that the lunar cycle can affect moods and how people behave—often with a more negative connotation. Move over Mercury in retrograde 2022—we'll get to you later.
MAY Full moon—Monday, April 16th New moon—Monday, May 30th
In fact, words like ‘looney’ and ‘lunatic’, which are insensitive and outdated words often given to people with mental illness, have their origins from ‘luna’—the Latin word for moon. And in fairness, before humanity knew the science behind the lunar cycle and eclipses— they had the capacity to cause widespread anxiety and panic.
JULY Full moon—Wednesday, July 13th New Moon—Thursday, July 28th
Even during the information age, any staunch disbelievers in astrology could find themselves all aquiver if they took a deep dive into the royal family’s link to eclipses. Spooky correlations aside, the cycle itself offers an opportunity to take pause, meditate, think about what you’d like to leave behind, and what you’d like to focus on moving forward. So when you’re making your plans, as well as checking out your 2022 horoscope, you had better consider when to schedule full moon rituals to help you manifest bliss this year. 40

Bristol honours its hospitality heroes Hundreds of people attended a glittering gala to honour Bristol’s hospitality heroes and celebrate success after one of the most challenging periods ever for their businesses.
“Many of the sponsors have already agreed to support the 2023 Night of the Stars, which is fantastic news and a welcome vote of confidence for all our hard-working teams.
The Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA) hosted its fourth Night Of The Stars spectacular to recognise those who went above and beyond in their work to support the city’s hospitality industry.
“I would like to congratulate all the award winners and everyone else who was nominated, for the amazing work they have done in the most challenging of times.
The event did not take place in 2021 because of the pandemic but more than 300 people attended Ashton Gate in a strong show of support for their sector.
“But in a sense, everyone in the room was a winner, and it was wonderful to all come together, share our success stories, and look ahead to a brighter future.”
Raphael Herzog, Chair of the BHA, said: “This has been a very tough 18 months for hospitality businesses and we were so excited to finally be able to celebrate success.
The award-winners were not the only people who had cause to celebrate the Night of the Stars; the event also raised £1,237.50 for Childrens Hospice South West through a raffle.
“People are the most important asset in our industry and business, and it was an honour and a privilege to be able to come together again at last and recognise the many hospitality stars working in Bristol.
Corporate Parnterships Fundraiser Amanda Gallagher said: “It was truly wonderful to see so much support for CHSW in the room and the money raised could pay for over 60 hours of care for the families we support, at home, in our hospices and virtually.
“The judges were highly complementary of the nominations, which were all first class. We would also like to express our immense gratitude to our sponsors, without whom we would not have been able to stage this event and give our hospitality heroes the recognition they have thoroughly earned. 46
“We would like to say a huge thank you to the Bristol Hoteliers Association for their support.”

How Businesses Are Using Apprenticeship
It’s no secret that the last 2 years have not been kind to many businesses, with lockdown closures, uncertain markets and a sharp decline in consumer spending all contributing to the loss of an estimated 400,000 businesses in the first year alone. Retail, hospitality and leisure were unsurprisingly amongst those hardest hit, with an average of 48 shops, restaurants and leisure facilities closing permanently every day during the peak of the pandemic in 2020. As business owners became more resilient, with many ‘pivoting’ into new areas or adapting their model to suit changing demands of customers. This innovation and resilience has provided a glimmer of hope for many companies trying to bounce back from COVID-19. Although many employers were forced into pausing recruitment, or making redundancies during the worst-hit time, there is renewed hope with a focus on training and development from employers. The week commencing 7th February marks National Apprenticeship Week, a week-long celebration which highlights the awareness of apprenticeships for learners and employers. Apprenticeships are set to play a key part in the recovery of businesses post-pandemic, with 70% of employers saying that apprenticeships will be vital to their recovery from COVID-19 over the next 12 months according to findings from the Build The Future Apprenticeship Survey from The Open University. Carina Wills, Co-Owner at Professional Apprenticeships, a private apprenticeship provider in Bristol says “We are seeing unprecedented demand for apprentices at the moment. The landscape is changing, with a greater focus on workplace training and a ‘grow your own’ culture” 48
She adds “Apprentices add a new dynamic to a team. Their motivation and desire to learn is exactly what employers need as they begin to recover and grow after a challenging few years.” This is supported by the fact that 66% of employers who supported apprenticeships during the pandemic say it helped them recover more quickly and numbers of app renticeships are already set to increase beyond pre-COVID levels. Certainly, apprenticeships are proving a cost-effective way to grow a team, with government-funded training and lower salary expectations to offset the training and mentoring provided. “What’s exciting is that apprenticeship funding can also be used to upskill existing staff so with many employers valuing staff training and development so highly at the moment and no upper age limit on apprenticeships, they are also using apprenticeships to improve skills in their current team.” Says Adam Rooke, Also Co-Owner of Professional Apprenticeships “This culture of learning is great for staff retention as well as the obvious benefits to the employer of a greater skilled workforce.”
