WHY DO WE WEAR POPPIES? November commemorates the month we remember all those who have lost their lives to conflicts across the world throughout history.
Since then, the poppy has become a symbol of remembering everyone who gave their lives to wars, but also to those who have died on behalf of their country.
As a sign to show we are thinking of all those lost to conflicts, many people wear a small red poppy.
WHEN DO YOU WEAR A POPPY? If you chose to wear a poppy to remember those lost to conflicts and wars, the British Legion asks to do it through the Remembrance period.

BLACK POPPY The black poppy commemorates the black, African, and Caribbean communities' contributions to the war effort, as service people and civilians.
It was launched back in 2010 by Selena Carty who says it's "A symbol that signifies pride, honour and glory, with the hope that future generations will be inspired by these largely untold historical legacies".
WHITE POPPY The white poppy remembers those who died in conflict towards the end of a war.
Some people choose to wear the white poppy as they feel the red poppy glorifies conflict and wars. 5
YOUR PET AND FIREWORKS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
6
Fireworks phobia is a prevalent problem amongst pets that causes animal suffering. When fireworks are set off, some animals will become frantic and try to get away from the loud noises and bright lights. They can take a long time to calm down afterwards.
And to animals, the flashes of light produced by fireworks seem just as threatening as the noises.
WHERE DOES THE FEAR OF FIREWORKS COME FROM?
Fireworks are closer to the ground than thunderstorms, so the impact can be even more overwhelming. What’s more, the lights and noises are accompanied by acrid smells.
If we consider how animals perceive noises and lights, it’s easy to understand why many of them are scared of fireworks. Sounds are simply much louder to dogs and cats than they are to us humans. The average dog’s hearing is four times more acute than a human’s, and cats can be even more noise-sensitive than dogs. Animals struggle to make sense of firework noises as they are not only extremely loud but also unpredictable. They associate such noises with danger, and all their instincts tell them to run to a place of safety.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES Helping your pet to become well-socialised can play a major role in preventing the fear of fireworks from becoming ingrained. A pet’s breed, age and sex can also have a significant impact on their sensitivity to fireworks, as can the circumstances in which they were reared and whether or not they have been neutered. For animals to be well-socialised, they must have as many positive experiences as possible during the most sensitive phase of their development (for dogs this is between the ages of 3 and 12 weeks, while for cats it is between 2 and 7 weeks). Well-socialised animals can cope much better with unfamiliar situations later in life than animals that have had little or no positive experiences during their sensitive phase.
The overall effect is comparable to the thunderclaps and lightning of thunderstorms, which often provoke a fear response in animals (astraphobia).
Sometimes just one negative experience of fireworks can be enough to trigger noise phobia in a pet. Periods when fireworks go off repeatedly (usually during festivities such as New Year’s Eve) can reinforce an animal’s adverse reaction to noise over time. Studies show that even young dogs can develop a fear of fireworks. You might consider giving your pet a socialisation session to reduce their fear of fireworks. This might include playing your pet a sound recording of fireworks while offering them positive and reassuring rewards (cuddles, treats, etc.). Observe your pet closely throughout the session and stop if you see signs of stress.
FEAR OF FIREWORKS IS A SERIOUS ANIMAL WELFARE ISSUE Fireworks expose animals – not just pets, but also wild animals and livestock – to immense stress, which in extreme cases can prove fatal. Many dogs run away when startled by fireworks, and tragically some end up being run over. Anxiety, fears and phobias have far-reaching consequences. You should do as much as you can to make the situation easier for your pet.

SS GREAT BRITAIN INSPIRES BRISTOL POET Letters and diaries written by passengers on the ss Great Britain when it sailed the high seas have inspired a Bristol poet to produce a unique anthology. Ship’s Log (Bristol Books, £8) has been researched and written by David Punter, Professor of Poetry at the University of Bristol, with every poem inspired by original writings of passengers and crew on Brunel’s great ship, now a permanent fixture in Bristol’s Harbourside. David Punter searched through the archive attached to the ship and found passages written off the coast of Australia, America or on the high seas by passengers, the ship’s doctor, officers and crew members. Ship’s Log faithfully records extracts from the archive and the poems that he was moved to write after uncovering them. Said David Punter: “I have been reading through these archives for several years and have been continually startled by the extraordinary words in which those on board attempt to convey and craft their experiences, to form some kind of explicable narrative – to explain to others, but also in many cases to explain to themselves. “They were articulating situations of the utmost strangeness – telling of experiences of raging tempest and blinding calm, of death and survival, of wonder and marvel, of seemingly impossible encounters with distant shores and inexplicable creatures.”
8
David Punter has published a number of poetry books, most recently Those Other Fields (Palewell, 2000) and Stranger (2001), as well as a great deal of literary criticism. He has been on the Boards of Poetry Can, Literature Southwest and the Ledbury Poetry Festival, and was recently a judge of the Bristol Cathedral Poetry Prize. An Honorary Professor at Xian Jiao-Tong University, China, having previously worked in Scotland, Hong Kong and Shanghai, he has been preoccupied with ships and the sea for most of his life and has sailed in many waters. Ship’s Log is available from the author’s website www.davidpunter.org.

LIVING
1953. A London shattered by WWII is still recovering. Williams (Bill Nighy), a veteran civil servant, is an important cog within the city’s bureaucracy as it struggles to rebuild. Buried under paperwork at the office, lonely at home, his life has long felt empty and meaningless. Then a shattering medical diagnosis forces him to take stock – and to try and grasp fulfilment before it goes beyond reach. At a seaside resort, chaperoned by a local decadent (Tom Burke), he flirts with hedonism before rejecting it as his solution. Back in London he finds himself drawn to the natural vitality of Margaret (Aimee Lou Wood), a young woman who once worked under his supervision and is now determined to spread her wings. Then one evening he is struck by a revelation – one as simple as it is profound – and with a new energy, and the help of Peter (Alex Sharp), an idealistic new recruit to his department, he sets about creating a legacy for the next generation. BRAND NEW COLLABORATIVE MURAL LANDS IN ST PAULS
An eye-catching, large-scale street artworkinspired by the words and memories of local people has been created on Lower Ashley Road in St Pauls on the side of a new affordable housing development. Brighter Places consulted with residents in St Pauls and St Agnes earlier this year who told them the artwork should tell an authentic story of the area using the theme of ‘Putting Down Roots.’ Upfest, Bristol’s world-renowned street art festival, worked with Brighter Places to commission the artist. HazardOne, who lives locally and is one of the UK’s top street artists, was selected and workshopped ideas with residents from the new development to explore and develop the design.
Stephen Hayles, co-founder of Upfest said: “Being able to give local people and residents the opportunity to put their own ideas and creativity into this brand new piece of street art was something that we were really looking forward to. Engaging with communities and collaborating with them on this mural is what’s really made this a stand out piece of art for the entire neighbourhood to enjoy.”

Got fresh fruit and veg that you can’t use in time? Why not freeze them? Some fruit and veg will lose their texture when frozen – you can deal with this by freezing them pureed or stewed. This applies to tomatoes (use the puree for pasta dishes or pizza), strawberries (use the puree in smoothies or as a sauce for other fresh fruit) and apples (use stewed apple on your porridge or muesli, or as the base for a fruit crumble).

You can also make stale bread into breadcrumbs - either mix them with herbs and onions as a stuffing for chicken or to top baked fish, or freeze the breadcrumbs for later use. Loaves of bread freeze well too. If you’re freezing a loaf or rolls from an in-store bakery, transfer into a freezer bag for better results rather than just freezing it in the packaging it comes in.

• Insulation – an insulated property will be a warmer property, in addition to saving money. • If the property has old, draughty, and ill-fitting windows, do they need replacing? The colder weather is upon us, the clocks have gone backwards, and the mornings and evenings are now dark. It is safe to say, that the Winter is fast approaching. Whether this makes you happy or sad, there is one thing for certain, this will have an impact on your tenants and on your property.
• Draught proof all existing external doors, windows and do not forget the loft hatch. •
Any water pipes that are likely to be exposed to frost, particularly those outside such as outside standpipes or condensate pipes, should be insulated.
Taking some commonsense steps will help to protect your property and your tenants, let’s take a look at some of these now:
•
If there is a hot water cylinder, make sure that it has a good insulating jacket.
LANDLORD/PROPERTY OWNER
•
There are a few precautions that the landlord can take or, discuss with their letting agent:
Have radiators fitted with individual TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves) so that individual room temperatures can be controlled.
•
Ensure that any flues and outlets cannot be blocked by snow and freeze over.
•
Boiler overflow pipes – so that these do not freeze up, have a word with your engineer and discuss foam pipe insulation. Also leave the heating on overnight during freezing tempera tures and set your heating to a higher level during very cold weather.
•
•
•
24
Insurance Policy. Is it up to date and does it cover the most common winter risks – storm damage, flood damage, water leaks or third-party liability for injuries (think about tiles blowing off the roof in a gale etc.) Your eating system – when did you last check the heating system and the radiators (and when did you last bleed them) to ensure that they are working correctly? When did you last have your boiler serviced? A Gas Safety check will not include a service, unless it specifically states that it does, or you request one – be sure to check. Coal fires or wood burning stoves – chimneys should be swept annually and do not forget to test your carbon monoxide alarm regularly; this is a legal requirement.
• •
Think about safety, not just cold. Check outside guttering, downspouts and drains for leakages and blockages. This will reduce the risk of ice forming, which could cause people to slip and fall.
•
Check any sheds and outbuildings, are they secure and are their doors safe from blowing open?
•
If surfaces are slippery and people could fall, provide gritting and warnings.
Talk and communicate with your tenants about the following and remember, some tenants may not be experienced in living independently (especially if this is their first rental after leaving home) and may not understand the vagaries of heating systems and the “behaviour” of properties during wintertime: Do they understand how to use the heating system and how to adjust the thermostat? •
Do they know where the stop cock is?
•
Do they have emergency numbers, just in case?
•
If they intend to go away for any period of time during the holiday season, make sure that they do not turn the heating off, as this could lead to burst pipes.
•
Speak to your tenants about what causes mould and how to treat it. Winter is a prime time for mould as it is cold outside and tempting to keep windows closed. This is especially relevant in bathrooms, shower rooms and where clothes are dried.
•
Speak to your tenants about keeping the heating on low during the daytime to maintain a minimum temperature, as this costs less than raising the temperature from cold.
•
Be sure that your tenants understand the importance of maintaining a minimum temperature throughout the whole property, so that clothes, fabrics, walls and furniture will remain warm and not absorb moisture from the air causing condensation and mould.
A house booklet with all of these points in, together with emergency telephone numbers and the locations of the stop cock, thermostatic control for the boiler and any other important information is a really good idea to have in the property. In addition to this, a conversation with your tenants and a letter/communication from either you or your agent just before the weather turns, should reinforce the message and prevent any nasty surprises. A stitch in time really does save nine and prevention is less costly than cure, for the safety and comfort of your property and your tenants, when it comes to getting ready for the cold weather. If we can help or offer any advice or assistance, then please do not hesitate to get in touch.

HOW TO SPOT FAKE REVIEWS ONLINE THIS BLACK FRIDAY Let's be honest with each other, those crowds we used to see on Black Friday, with people cramming into shops at opening time and fighting over the latest bargain The signs suggest that the majority of us got over the Black Friday hype a few years ago. That being said many shops are still expected to offer deals online for the pre-Christmas sales event on 25 November. It’s been a difficult year for lots of retailers, who will be hoping Black Friday and its bigger cousin Cyber Monday - will give them a much-needed boost.
USEFUL TIPS FOR THE BEST DEALS But this all comes with a health warning if you’re buying online. As some online retails are struggling to prevent fake reviews which can mislead shoppers this Black Friday. The consumer group looked at some of the most popular purchases, including tablets and phones, and found some review ratings were being manipulated. 26
One onlime retail did make an online statement to the claims saying it has clear policies that reviewers and sellers must stick to. In a online statement they said: “ it will suspend, ban, and take legal action against those who break the rules. We found a pair of headphones had 1,006 ratings and 4.8 stars despite only being on sale for six months - well above the average for an unknown brand. As well as false comments, some sellers have also manipulated the star-rating system to persuade people into a purchase. In the UK, Amazon is the main place people go for Black Friday shopping. A major online review companies research found 34% of consumers planned to buy something there this Black Friday, compared to 16% at John Lewis and 7% at Currys PC World. HOW TO HELP WILD HEDGEHOGS IN OUR GARDENS? How can you tell if a hedgehog needs help? Hedgehogs are adorable and shy animals which awakens our compassionate instinct. However, interfering more than necessary can be harmful. In autumn, these creatures go on the hunt for food and slowly start to build their nests. You shouldn’t be surprised if you come across several hedgehogs during the autumn months. However, their numbers have declined by 50% since the year 2000. This is why it is crucial to help hedgehogs when necessary. There are several signs you can spot to know whether a hedgehog is in need of help. If you find a hedgehog that looks injured, emaciated or ill, you should act straight away. The same goes for baby hedgehogs that have been left behind. Watch the nest for a while - if the mother hedgehog doesn’t come back after two hours, you should bring the hoglets to safety as soon as possible. Hoglets that are found outside of the nest also need your help. If you find a hedgehog active in winter, it is a sign that it hasn’t started hibernating and it needs your help. You can make their lives a little easier by following these tips.
WELCOME HEDGEHOGS INTO YOUR GARDEN Create small burrows so that these creatures can get into your garden easily.
HELP THEM PREPARE FOR HIBERNATION Hedgehogs need nesting materials and a place to hide in order to prepare for hibernation. Leave some leaves, greenery or wood in a corner so that they can help themselves and build themselves a nest. You can also make little hedgehog houses or places to hide available.
PUT SOME FOOD OUT It is important to give hedgehogs extra food only in autumn, otherwise their hibernation can be delayed. When hedgehogs can’t find any more food at the end of autumn, they naturally fall into hibernation but this doesn’t happen when food can still be found. You can put out canned cat food, cooked poultry meat or scrambled eggs (without seasoning or oil).
MAKE FRESH WATER AVAILABLE Leave fresh water out for the hedgehogs near the food. This is especially crucial during hot and dry summers. Hedgehogs should never have milk because they are naturally lactose intolerant and it can cause nasty digestion problems.
28
BE PARTICULARLY CAREFUL WHEN GARDENING Before you mow the lawn or rake the leaves, you should always check whether a hedgehog is nesting there. These creatures like to hide under piles of leaves, stacks of wood and in other similar places.
CHECK CAREFULLY IN AIR VENTS AND OTHER HOLES Check holes and ditches as well as air vents regularly to see if a hedgehog has fallen in. When this happens, you can take the hedgehog out carefully with gloves on. As a prevention, small planks can be placed into a hole to allow hedgehogs to climb out on their own.
GARDEN PONDS AND SWIMMING POOLS SHOULD BE MADE HEDGEHOG-PROOF Hedgehogs can easily drown in ponds and swimming pools. It is, therefore, important to take the necessary precautions. For example, you could fix wooden planks to the edge of the pond so that hedgehogs can safely get out of the water again.
AVOID USING CHEMICALS IN THE GARDEN The main source of food for hedgehogs is insects. On the one hand, the use of insect repellent will take away a source of food and on the other hand, it can be fatal when consumed by hedgehogs. Try to avoid pesticides.
BE CAREFUL WHEN DRIVING As previously mentioned, hedgehogs are particularly active during the autumn months and so can very often be found on the roads. These creatures are active at night, so it is advisable to be particularly careful at dawn and dusk. If it isn’t possible to brake, try to drive so that the hedgehog goes under the car between the wheels. Usually, nothing would happen to the hedgehog in this case because the gap between the road and the car is big enough.
TAKE HEDGEHOGS IN NEED OF HELP TO A VET OR A RESCUE CENTRE If you find a malnourished or ill hedgehog, you should act quickly. First, you should take the hedgehog into your home and make sure it has food and is kept warm. If necessary, remove any visible parasites with tweezers, then take the hedgehog to the vet or a rescue centre as soon as possible.

STOCKHILL WOOD Stockhill Wood is a great, well looked after coniferous woodland within the Mendip Hills and popular amongst dog walkers.
There’s a free car park on site, from there, you can take a few different routes to explore the woods. There are 2 main routes that are signposted, the purple route is the All Ability Trail (600m) and the green one is the Easy Going Trail (0.7 miles). The all ability route is dedicated to Ian McArdle of the Cheddar Valley Access Group. He was a disabled man who loved Stockhill Forest and the Priddy Mineries opposite and inspired the trail’s creation. However, there are many more trails to discover here! The woods are exceptionally well looked after, with wide paths, picnic areas and benches to perch on. It’s a very peaceful walk in a large area, so you may be walking for a little while before you and your pup see anyone else, even if the car park is packed when you arrive. Stockhill Wood is a truly great dog walk for any time of year, it’s magical when it snows (if you can get there!), glorious in spring when the wildflower fields start coming to life and, of course, it’s amazing in autumn with the leaves covering the ground. In winter, the place is still so green with a layer of moss covering much of the woodland floor. Make sure you take wellies in winter, as it can get very muddy! Adjacent to the woodland on its western side (across a minor road) is Priddy Mineries, a nature reserve of the Somerset Wildlife Trust. It has pools of water, which are brilliant for dogs that love a swim. Even though there are signs that indicate horses shouldn’t walk here, some riders still do take their horses here, so keep an ear out in case your pooch is scared of horses. There aren’t a lot of poo bins here, I only found one in the car park, so please stick and flick or take your rubbish with you until you can dispose of it in a bin.

THIS WEEK’S ROUND-UP OF LOCAL NEWS IN BRISLINGTON
Another round-up of local news from your hardworking Lib Dem team.
ARNOS COURT PARK NEW PATH UPDATE: Following our complaint to Bristol City Council regarding the new, not-fit-forpurpose path in Arnos Court Park, we had a meeting with an officer from the council. He agreed that the new path is poor quality and won’t last, communication between officers and councillors was sadly lacking and what has been delivered is not what the Friends group won funding for.
32
Unfortunately, due to budgetary constraints, a tarmac path is unlikely to be delivered any time soon, so we are looking at alternative improvements. We have a Community Infrastructure Levy meeting with other councillors on 10 November, when we will highlight the problems we have faced. It would appear that many schemes will be delayed or altered due to staffing issues and costs of materials and even accessing materials. It’s all rather depressing.
JOHN PEER LATEST: A lot of residents have been in touch regarding the long-d erelict John Peer site opposite Arnos Court Park. Residents may remember the plans were rejected by Bristol city councillors at a planning committee meeting two years ago. The developers submitted an appeal, which was finally heard on 31 August. The decision is expected in early November.
AUTUMN RESIDENTS’ SURVEY: We are currently delivering our Autumn Survey to residents across Brislington West. We believe it is important to listen to local people on a regular basis, so that we can properly represent you. If you can spare a few moments to complete the form and return it to us, we would be very grateful.
AUTUMN LITTER BLITZ 2022: Grab your welly boots and your litter pickers and join in the fun, the Autumn Litter Blitz is here till 14 November! We’re inviting you to get stuck in. Help make our city safer for wildlife (and people) by holding a litter pick in your local park, riverside walk, or even the footpath by your house. Last year an incredible 522 volunteers took part in 158 litter picks, collecting 432 bags of litter! In total, a whopping 886 hours were spent collecting litter from our city streets, parks and shared spaces! Decide who you want to litter pick with. You could pick by yourself or as part of a group. Decide on a date and place for your litter blitz. Think about somewhere that needs a litter bit of love. Book your litter picking kit here: https://bristolwastecompany. co.uk/household/get-involved/litter-picking-kits/
The community engagement team will be in touch to arrange your kit collection so you have all the tools you need for your litter pick. After your litter pick, let Bristol Waste know where to collect the bags from using the litter collection form and return your litter picking kit. Hundreds of Brislington West residents have signed up to receive our monthly newsletter via email. You can register using this link: http://www.bristollibdems. org/efocus.

OVER 40 PUBLIC LIVING ROOMS More than 40 Public Living Rooms are now open across North Somerset as free and welcoming spaces for anyone who needs extra support to keep warm this winter. North Somerset Council has worked with numerous organisations and community groups to help set up free Public Living Rooms across the region in direct response to the Cost-of-Living crisis with libraries, community centres, faith groups and many more stepping forward and opening their doors as dedicated warm spaces. To help find your nearest Public Living Room, a new interactive map is available at Public Living Rooms (n-somerset.gov. uk). Click on a map pin for more detail including address, opening times and facilities available. North Somerset Council has allocated over £25,000 in grants to help support organisations wishing to set up a Public Living Room with over £13,500 allocated so far – with more to come as additional warm spaces across the region come on board.
36
Cllr Mike Bell, Deputy Leader at North Somerset Council said: “Many people in our community face enormous pressure due to the rising cost of living and onset of winter. This is a council that cares about people and I’m proud that we’ve been able to support so many organisations who are now helping run Public Living Rooms at this crucial time. These are welcoming places for you to come, grab a cup of tea, a bit of company and most importantly keep warm this winter.” In addition to the £25,000 funding provided by North Somerset Council so far, match funding of £2,500 have each been given by Alliance Homes, Bristol Water and Wessex Water to support North Somerset’s Public Living Rooms initiatives. Cllr Bell continued: “I’d like to thank the organisations who have contributed financially to this great work and helped to set up PublicLiving Rooms across the area.
No one should go cold at any time, and it is disappointing that these schemes are even needed at all. However, North Somerset residents should know that support is here, and we really are in this together to help each other.” The interactive Public Living Room map is also available to view at https:// www.n-somerset.gov.uk/my-services/ north-somerset-together/public-living-rooms-north-somerset alongside links to maps showing spaces registered with the Camerados https://camerados.org/public-living-room/ and Warm Spaces https://www.warmwelcome. uk/#find-a-space initiatives. Residents will therefore be able to access up-todate information about North Somerset spaces that have been registered with one or more of the initiatives.
Public Living Rooms are just one of the many packages of measures in place to help residents at this challenging financial time. For more information about help available including support with bills, childcare costs, housing support, and energy and heating advice, check out www.n-somerset.gov.uk/my-services/benefits-support/ cost-living-advice-guidance. There are also useful links to local food banks, a cost-of-living survival kit and support to help people travel to work. For more details on setting up a community space as a Public Living Room, please email policypartnershipteam@n-somerset.gov.uk.

The sites could provide up to 1,500 homes and new job opportunities, while also raising up to £25 million to fund capital priorities such as schools, roads and leisure facilities.

HOTELIERS SET THEIR SIGHTS ON A STARRY, STARRY NIGHT Bristol hoteliers have set their sights on a starry, starry night as preparations step up for the fifth ‘Night of the Stars’ event, which celebrates and honours the heroes of the city’s hospitality sector. The glittering gala, organised by the Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA), will take place on March 3 at Ashton Gate, which belongs to one of the events main sponsors, Bristol Sports. Six main sponsors and two drinks sponsors have already signed up to support the event, which the BHA says is a very welcome vote of confidence in their businesses, which have had an extremely challenging few years due to the impact of Brexit and the pandemic. The process for award nominations will begin towards the end of this month, in nine categories. In February this year around 350 people attended the celebration and it is hoped that around 400 will attend next year’s gala.
42
BHA Chair Raphael Herzog said: “We’re delighted – and very grateful – to have already secured eight significant sponsors for the event. “This represents a huge vote of confidence in our sector and shows our talented teams that their incredible efforts during these challenging times have been recognised and are valued. “The evening gives us a chance to further acknowledge the considerable contribution that the hospitality industry makes to Bristol’s economy and to celebrate heroic individuals and teams who have gone above and beyond in their work. “The evening also highlights that, even in the most difficult times, it’s still possible to find something – and some people – to be proud of and who have risen to the challenges they face.” The evening will see awards presented for: Employee of the Year (front of house); Employee of the Year (heart of house); Rising Star; Chef of the Year (up to Sous Chef level); Hotel Bright Idea & Best Innovation; Team of the Year; Unsung Hero; Community Spirit and Green Initiative.
There are still some sponsorship opportunities available. The BHA is currently in talks with a number of other companies and hope to finalise sponsor details within the next four or five weeks but are still happy to hear from anyone else interested in becoming a sponsor. Mr Herzog added: “Partnering with us will provide you with a platform to showcase your own brand to the hospitality industry, which makes a significant contribution to Bristol’s economy every year. “It will ensure that your business is at the forefront of the hearts and minds of those businesses operating in the sector. “You will gain access to key decision makers in the industry, showcasing you as a leader among your competitors and providing you with an opportunity to develop and nurture your partnerships.
Hengrove Community Centre Fortfield Road BS14 9NX Tuesday 9.30am Sarah: 07879 443888
“We would very much welcome the opportunity to discuss the various sponsorship opportunities available, and to tell you how a partnership with us can work for your business. “As an event partner, we will develop a bespoke package appropriate for your business and brand, and you will be profiled as a partner to the awards. “This is a positive opportunity for businesses and sponsors to give a huge vote of confidence to the hospitality industry, which makes a significant contribution to the local economy every year.” Anyone interested in finding out more about the opportunities available should email info@bristol-hoteliers.co.uk The six main sponsors who have already signed up for 2023’s Night of the Stars are: Bristol College, Integra, Sounds Commercial, Bristol Sport, Bristol BID team and COORS, with the two drinks sponsors being Pommery and FXC brand.

CAMPAIGNERS VISIT KING CHARLES III
Environmental and social campaigners have visited King Charles III at his first reception as monarch in the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
Naseem Talukdar and Moslek Uddin were among 300 members of the British south-east Asian community to be invited to the official residence of His Majesty The King in Edinburgh. The event was held to recognise the contribution these communities have made to the health service, arts, media, education, business and the armed forces.
Naseem has worked with representatives from mosques in Bristol to find sustainable ways to serve food and drink while breaking fast during Ramadan.
He added: “The Queen Consort was impressed to learn about PAP’s activity over the past few years.
Naseem, from Fishponds, Bristol, founded Projects Against Plastic (PAP) to find ways to reduce single-plastic use - starting in the hospitality sector.
“She was keen to learn more about the Plastic Free Ramadan campaign – set to be a nationwide event to enable the faith communities to reduce food waste and plastic waste.”
While Moslek, from Weston, founded UK Curry Connect (UKCC), which tackles skills shortages in the Asian food industry.
Moslek who heads Chutneys in Aller Parade, is a PAP trustee and uses reusable metal containers, called tiffins, for food orders at his takeaway.
And they have created a partnership to bring greater change in the industry.
Moslek and Naseem have hosted 'Curry and Conversation' workshops with Weston Chamber of Commerce to encourage others to reduce their single-use plastic usage.
Tackling climate change Naseem, who has been nominated for an MTM award - celebrating the work of diverse communities and individuals across the South West, said: “His Majesty was keen to learn about the challenges and accomplishments of the plastic pollution campaign.” 48
Moslek, who was inspired to take action by his young daughter who watched BBC documentary Blue Planet where Sir David Attenborough highlights the effect of climate change, said: “It’s important that we act now for future generations.”
Tackling skill shortages Moslek founded UKCC to raise awareness of staff and skills shortages - exacerbated since the pandemic – and find solutions.
Moslek, an executive chef and director at Sponsor Licence Specialists, which offers legal support for companies recruiting overseas workers, helped organise a team of 15 chefs to take part in the Culinary World Cup in Luxembourg.
He said: “His Majesty has shown his support for the hospitality industry and called it “one of this country’s greatest success stories”.
And their showstopper, Time Running Out: Plastic or Planet, which aimed to highlight the current threat to the environment, was awarded a gold medal.
“He recognises the contribution the sector makes to the wealth and welfare of our economy and that we face greater challenges today.

“It was a great event and an opportunity to raise awareness of our work, while celebrating the achievements of our community.” Naseem is director for social responsibility and sustainability for (UKCC) and helped to deliver free hot meals to key workers and vulnerable people during lockdown with the campaign group. He has also worked with UKCC to highlight environmental issues.
The UKCC has consulted with the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) on issues surrounding recruitment within the industry and the various challenges they face since the outbreak of Covid-19. The team also worked with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for ethnic minority small business owners to raise concerns of those working in the field
