OFFICIAL CHARITY PARTNERS OF THE BRISTOL INTERNATIONAL BALLOON FIESTA Teenage Cancer Trust and Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) have been announced as the official charity partners of the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta as the landmark event makes its highly anticipated return to Ashton Court Estate from 11th to 14th August 2022. Teenage Cancer Trust is the only charity in the UK dedicated to meeting the unique and complex needs of teenagers and young adults fighting cancer, and GWAAC provides lifesaving emergency care to the 2.1 million people across Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire and parts of Wiltshire.

On Saturday there will be special tours of GWAAC’s helicopter and some UV festival face painting for the Night Glow! Fiesta-goers should make sure to swing by each charity to say hello to their amazing teams and volunteers and show them support. Supporting GWAAC will ensure the team will be ready to respond whenever and wherever they’re needed. With each air ambulance mission costing around £2,000 to attend, the charity needs to raise over £4 million a year to remain operational - and relies on the support of its incredible community, volunteers and local support to keep it flying.

Teenage Cancer Trust provides specialist services to young people affected across the UK, with two specialist facilities at Bristol’s Children’s Hospital and Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre. The specialist nurses and support teams in the South West are committed to supporting young people with cancer from Bristol and the surrounding areas to ensure they get the necessary access to specialist age-appropriate care, from psychological, emotional, financial, practical, educational or social support. With the inclusion of last year’s 2021 Fiesta Fortnight, the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is now in its 43rd year and has grown into one of Europe’s largest annual hot air balloon festivals, attracting over half a million locals and visitors alike. This year’s edition will take place between Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th August - with a series of community launches taking place across the city in partnership with Costa Coffee.

Visitors will be welcomed back to the ground of Ashton Court Estate on Thursday at midday with hot air balloons tethering throughout the afternoon, followed by the first mass assent of the festival taking place at 6pm. The much-loved Nightglows will please late night visitors on Thursday and Saturday as late night visitors can witness the hot air balloons appear as giant light bulbs, as the roaring burners light up in time to music. As always, myriad family entertainment will take place over the weekend with a selection of Bristol’s finest street food vendors, live music, fun fair, and this year’s introduction of the new VIP area Sky Lounge. Visitors are encouraged to plan their journey ahead of time and book their car parking in advance. Parking tickets can be purchased here. Bristol’s Eurovision bid hits the right note with city hoteliers Hoteliers are backing a bid for Bristol to host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, claiming it will be a huge boost for their businesses. Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees announced at the weekend that the city would like to host the iconic contest at the Brabazon Hangar site in Filton. The 2022 Eurovision Song Contest was won by Ukraine but organisers say the conflict in that country means it will not be able to host it next year. The United Kingdom finished runners-up, thanks to Sam Ryder’s Spaceman, so the BBC has been asked to take on hosting duties for the 2023 contest. In a video message, Marvin Rees said: “As a global and diverse city of sanctuary, Bristol can be the caretaker of next year’s Eurovision Song Contest. “We’re working in partnership with YTL Arena Bristol on a bid to bring Eurovision to the Brabazon Hangars.” 6

Raphael Herzog, chair of the Bristol Hoteliers Association, welcome the news. He said: “The Eurovision Song Contest is a huge event with a massive worldwide audience and hosting it in Bristol would undoubtedly put our city on the map and be a huge boost for tourism. “The event itself will see a huge demand for accommodation, as well as bringing visitors and supporters from all over Europe, and beyond, who may well want to make a return visit in the future as tourists once they get a glimpse of all that Bristol and the surrounding area has to offer. “This is a remarkable opportunity for the city and would be a huge boost to hoteliers and other hospitality businesses as we continue on the slow, and challenging, road to recovery after the pandemic. “We wish the Mayor and YTL Arena Bristol all the best with putting their bid together and will be keeping everything crossed that this amazing event can come to Bristol. “The YTL Arena will be a huge asset to the city; showcasing it with an event like the Eurovision Song Contest will be invaluable in promoting Bristol as an event and tourism destination – and, of course, as a place to stay.”

WHAT TO EAT TO BEAT THE HEAT IN BRISTOL THIS WEEKEND

Visitors to the 50th Bristol Harbour Festival She said: “It may be the last food you think of this weekend are being advised of the perfect in hot weather, but it’s true that spicy food can thing to eat to beat the heat – a curry. help your body cool down in hot weather. Temperatures are set to soar to 30 degrees centigrade – possibly higher – when thousands of people pour into the city for the harbourside spectacular, back for the first time since 2019. With such extreme temperatures, curry might be the last thing you think of when it comes to keeping your body cool. But one expert says that ‘fighting fire with fire’ works, and is keen to offer some inciteful food for thought to people heading into Bristol this weekend. Gauri Renukdas is Director of Tikka Flame, which sits in the heart of the Harbourside area. 10

“Curries and chillies can stimulate heat receptors in the mouth, enhance circulation and cause sweating, which is how the body naturally cools down in the heat.

“If you think about it, dishes like the ones we serve at Tikka Flame originate from some of the hottest countries in the world. “But there is method to that apparent madness. A chilli-laden meal makes you work up a sweat without actually increasing your body temperature, which means your body will end up feeling cooler after consuming a curry.” Of course, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say, and the Tikka Flame will be open throughout the Harbour Festival so that people can find out for themselves.

15 - 17 JULY

The restaurant is setting up an outside bar for ‘grab and go’ drinks and has reintroduced a lunch menu, which is usually on offer between midday and 3pm, as well as its usual full menu of authentic Indian cuisine. The restaurant will actually be open all day, from 11.30am, during the Harbour Festival. Gauri said: “Your natural instinct might be to reach for an ice cream, salad or watermelon when the temperature soars, but if you want to really beat the eat, then something spicy is just what you need.”

Transform a Dull Room in 5 Easy Steps

Everyone wants a home that oozes personality and character, but if your house isn’t naturally designed with an architectural flair, it can sometimes feel like a bit of a challenge. If you live in a terrace house or an apartment, you may find that your home lacks any focal points, which could give it that wow factor. A home needs a good balance of interior design, furnishings, and features to make it stand out and feel like your own - sometimes it just takes a few changes here and there to get the balance right. Luckily, a dull room will usually present you with a blank canvas, meaning there are lots of different ways in which it can be transformed. Here is Hunters Bishopsworth 5 easy steps to help you bring a dull room back to life:

Use Colour

One of the most obvious ways to transform a dull room is with the use of colour. If you don’t want anything too bright, then just using a mixture of complementary colours on the walls and throughout the furnishings will help to make your room look more interesting. If you are feeling brave, then bold colours are a great way to transform any room. Either paint one wall a different colour to the others, or use the colour in your furnishings. 20

A bright red sofa will completely transform a dull room, as would canary yellow curtains on a sky blue carpet.

Make the Most of the Walls

Your walls are your best opportunity to transform a room if you want to leave the furniture where it is. As mentioned above, you can paint the rooms or put up new wallpaper, but there is an easier way to make the most of them. Mirrors and artwork can be used to completely change a room and make it feel totally new. Use mirrors of different sizes to reflect light around the room and hang pictures and art in various places on each wall to create character and reflect your personality.

Bring the Outside in

There is nothing better than flowers and fresh green plants and foliage to add texture and colour to a dull, boring room. There are lots of different types of house plants to choose from, ranging from big corner plants to smaller potted plants, or you could just use artificial plants and flowers if you don’t want to look after real ones. Make sure you keep your plants happy and healthy, so they continue to thrive in your room, and if you use artificial plants be sure to regularly clean them, so they don’t accumulate dust and make the room appear untidy.

Combine Lighting

Many rooms just have a boring overhead ceiling light that turns on and off using a switch on the wall. It’s best to avoid this when trying to jazz up a dull room and instead use a combination of lighting. Lamps of various heights at different points around the room will give the space a better atmosphere, and make it feel more welcoming. You can also add a dimmer switch onto your ceiling light so the lighting can be changed at any time of the day.

Add Accessories

If you have given your room a theme, add a range of accessories to enhance that theme and give the room a purpose. This could include cushions, candles or artwork. If you have a collection of old cameras or photos, for example, you could line then up along the mantelpiece. If the room has a fireplace, even if it is not in use, you could add a fireguard and a set of poker sticks to give it an authentic feel. You can usually find a range of unique accessories on a budget at car boot sales, and these can easily be adapted to work with the space you have.

PROPERTY PROTECTION… TENANT SELECTION… TIME These three are the most important things for self-managing landlords AND if one of them is done incorrectly, out of kilter or not given the attention it deserves, then it will lead to all sorts of property problems. We are very fortunate to provide property solutions for a wide range of landlords from completely different backgrounds and circumstances. The particular landlord, in this case study, is a very capable businessman, so his property problem was time… He didn’t have the time it takes to closely manage his investment, which meant that the tenants had “taken over” the running of the house. This landlord is a very capable businessman, so his property problem was time. He didn’t have the time it takes to closely manage his investment, which meant that the tenants had “taken over” the running of the house themselves.

22

This had led to a range of problems, namely: •

Sub-letting

Property damage (holes in the walls and floors)

No contracts between the landlord and the occupiers

And these were just the top 3….

The big lesson here is that property management takes time and if you don’t have the time to give to it, you may find that your property, your biggest asset, is being damaged and you are losing control.

He contacted us and we were able to: 1. Evict all tenants, even those with no contracts 2. Organise a refurb to repair all damage to the property 3. Re-design the property, to appeal to a different tenant type 4. Increase his rent roll 5. Inspect regularly to ensure this never happens again. Luckily for him, we stepped in, just in time and his house is now well looked after.

AND, the story does not end there – he was so happy with the end result and the amount of time that our involvement had given him back, that we now manage the rest of his portfolio too! Working alongside an agent who really understands your goals and motivations, because they are theirs too, can be invaluable. If you would like to know more or would like some help with: 1. Compliance on your property 2. Solving a tenant concern you have 3. Finding a new tenant 4. A hands-off passive management solution We are here to help and support you, contact us now or book a call.

New Community Resilience Fund: Bristol City Council has announced a new fund that will invest in our city’s community organisations. The Community Resilience Fund is a one-off pot of £4 million available to organisations based in and working with the most deprived areas of the city, with support also available for city-wide equality groups. Parts of Brislington West will be covered by this scheme. The capital funding can be used to pay for something physical, not a service or activity. This could include improving access for Disabled people, adding an extension to a community building or upgrading a community centre’s heating system to make it more environmentally sustainable. To find out if your community organisation is eligible and how to submit a proposal, visit: www.bristol.gov.uk/crf Home to School transport consultation: What do you think about Home to School transport provision in Bristol? As a local authority Bristol City Council has a duty to provide travel support for eligible children. This provision must be safe, appropriate to need, reliable and sustainable.

The new Home to School Transport survey seeks to find out from parents/ carers and young people what is working well and what is not working well with home to school travel, and how you think it could be improved. It also asks about travel requirements for young people at each stage of their childhood, personal budgets for home to school travel and an independent travel training offer. The survey is aimed at parents and carers who use the service, as well as schools and other professionals who work with children, to help inform a consultation planned for later this year. The survey is live now until Sunday 14 August: www.bristol.gov.uk/newsroom/what-do-youthink-about-home-to-school-transport-provision-in-bristol Annual canvass to commence: Every year BCC’s Electoral Services department undertakes a check of every property in the authority area to update the electoral register and ensure it is as accurate as possible. This annual canvass runs through the summer, with the new register being available from 01 December. Please engage with the annual canvass and reply promptly if asked to do so. Don’t lose your right to vote!

A one-off capital fund of £4 million, will be used to support community and voluntary organisations to increase their resilience, sustainability and enable them to continue the vital work they do. Funding will be invested in community organisations and groups based in and working with the top 30 per cent most deprived areas of the city, and in city-wide self-organised equality groups, for example Disabled people, Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities and LGBT communities. Grants for community-based organisations will be a minimum of £50,000, with some smaller grants of a minimum of £10,000 available for equalities community groups. This funding can be used to pay for a variety of projects, to help support our city’s community-led organisations during a fina ncially challenging time for our city and our country.

Community-led decision making is central to the fund. Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations in all the eligible areas of the city, and across different equalities communities, will lead conversations with community organisations during summer 2022 to identify potential projects. When all potential projects have been gathered, a group of VCSE organisations, local councillors and residents in each community will be recruited to review them and make a decision about what to invest in. This is a new and innovative approach for us and puts communities at the heart of the decision-making, ensuring the money will be invested in projects that can meet the challenges being faced by that specific community. We are providing an opportunity for communities and their residents to help shape decisions for the future, decisions that will ultimately benefit them and their neighbourhood.

The project must be something physical not a service or activity. For example: The new fund builds on Bristol’s Citizens’ Assembly which worked with a group of • Improving access for Disabled people diverse residents to make recommendations about key decisions which effect citizens. It • Adding an extension to a community also takes learning from the Port Community building or creating new spaces within Resilience Fund (PCRF), which invested £1 them – this can benefit residents today million in communities connected to Bristol but also future generations too Port in 2018, with £314,000 invested specifically in community facilities. Decisions were • Upgrading IT systems or buying equipmade through a combination of council staff ment assessment, resident panel interviews with applicants and a community vote. • Upgrading a community centre’s heating system to make it more environmentally sustainable and save on costs 28

One group that benefited from the PCRF was Ambition Community Energy CiC, who received a grant of £100,000 to complete planning work for a new community owned onshore wind turbine. This is currently in construction and is expected to deliver a 25-year income that will fund activity to deliver the Lawrence Weston Community Plan. Ambition Community Energy CiC are a small community organisation with little to no funding who are now successfully delivering their project. The PCRF made this possible, playing a significant part in moving it forward and supporting a community plan that identifies the needs of the communities and focuses resources on making things better.

Free sim cards and mobile data from North Somerset libraries

Residents facing digital exclusion through not being able to afford sim cards and mobile data can now access them for free thanks to a new scheme available through North Somerset Council's library service.

Anyone over 18 from a low-income household who qualifies in at least one of the following ways can obtain data vouchers from their local library:

The UK National Databank provides free sims and mobile data (as well as talk minutes and texts) to people in need through the Good Things Foundation’s network of local community partners, including North Somerset libraries. It’s like a food bank but for internet connectivity data.

Has no or insufficient access to the internet when away from home, and/or

Has no access or insufficient access to the internet at home, and/or

Can’t afford their existing monthly contract or top-up.

The scheme will offer vital connections for anyone cut off from the basic daily activities most people take for granted like contacting loved ones, accessing job interviews, finding essential health or other information online, and digitised public services.

Residents who need a data voucher should contact their local library to make an appointment to collect it. For details of North Somerset libraries visit www.n-somerset.gov. uk/libraries, email libraries@n-somerset.gov. uk or telephone 01934 426 834.

Councillor Mike Solomon, executive member for neighbourhoods and community services, said: "We’re committed to making North Somerset fairer for all our residents, and access to digital services is an essential part of life today. This is an excellent initiative and I hope anyone experiencing data poverty will make use of this offer to allow them to get online.

Helen Milner OBE, Group Chief Executive, Good Things Foundation, added: “Having sufficient data in our increasingly digital society is not a nice to have, it’s an absolute essential. If you’re not online you can’t save money on products and services, help your children to participate in home-learning, and apply for jobs.

"Our libraries play an important role in supporting people, helping to make sure everyone has free access to a world of digital and print resources."

30

“We’re delighted to be partnering with Virgin Media O2 to launch the National Databank, which can be thought of as a ‘food bank for data’. Now is the time for us to come together to address the issue of data poverty in the UK once and for all.”

SOUTH GLOS COUNCIL IS MAKING IT EASIER FOR MORE TO MOVE TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES People hoping to make the switch to an electric vehicle (EV) will find it easier in the future thanks to work being carried out by South Gloucestershire Council. The council has launched a 12-week consultation (11 July) on a new strategy looking at where EV charging points could be installed in the area to help support those making the switch to EVs.

This will help to reduce emissions on our roads and is part of our Climate Emergency response to make South Gloucestershire carbon neutral by 2030.

BRISTOL FUNERALS TO STAY ONLINE

A live funeral streaming service in Bristol, born out of covid restrictions that limited the number of mourners allowed to attend the ceremony, is to continue post-lockdown due to public demand.

Chris Baker, founder of Bristol Memorial Woodlands, said live streaming had proved extremely popular and helped people feel part of an important and meaningful moment in their lives.

Bristol Memorial Woodlands in Alveston engaged the services of a professional cameraman Steve Haines as part of its packages in March 2021 when only 30 people could attend a funeral

He said: “Although we are no longer in lockdown the streaming service has become a fixture as part of our bespoke packages. We’re pleased with the reception it gets from our families and it is important for us to do anything we can do to help people who have lost a loved one.

Steve, from Bristol Projector Hire, is to continue the service as many families say it helps relatives and friends who live far away to be part of the service and there are still significant numbers not able to attend because of Covid levels among the population. Steve Haines said: “Live streaming wasn’t anything I’d done before the pandemic and is without a doubt the most rewarding job I have ever done, and I get back so much positive feedback it feels quite humbling. “I am delighted to continue to offer my services to Bristol Memorial Woodlands which hopefully brings some comfort to people at a very difficult time.” Steve also provides families with a DVD of the event so they can watch it back later and uploads the videos to a private streaming site so people from all around the world can watch it. Using two broadcast quality cameras, Steve films from the balcony of the chapel at Bristol Memorial Woodlands and a second camera to capture the coffin coming in, guests arriving and people lighting candles. 34

“The quality of Steve’s work is excellent. His footage is of extremely high quality with excellent sound whether you are watching it close by or across the world. We allow more time for families to say goodbye at Bristol Memorial Woodlands and this is just another way to help people through difficult times.” Bristol Memorial Woodlands is a nature reserve which hosts funeral services and burials within 100-acres of woodland and meadows where trees and wildflowers are planted around the plots where loved ones are laid to rest. The area is managed by a charitable trust and will be open forever for future generations to visit. For more information about events at Bristol Memorial Woodlands visit www.memorialwoodlands.com,

HOW TO AVOID GETTING HOOKED BY SCAMS The police are urging people to be vigilant when it comes to suspicious messages to protect themselves from scammers. Phishing, text messages and emails impersonating well-known organisations remains a common tactic used by criminals. Whether it’s a fake email asking for an individual to ‘verify’ bank details or a text message claiming they have been in contact with someone that has Covid-19, the goal is usually the same – to trick an individual into revealing personal and financial information. The most impersonated organisations in phishing emails reported last year were the NHS, HMRC and Gov.uk. As of 31 May 2022, the public has made more than 12 million reports to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service, with the removal of approximately 83,000 scams and 153,000 malicious websites. The Suspicious Email Reporting Service was launched by the National Cyber Security Centre and the City of London Police in April 2020 to enable the public to forward suspicious emails to an automated system that scans them for malicious links. DS Tom Williams, of the Cyber Crime team said in a statement online: “Many people will recall having received a suspicious link or text, as these phishing scams are among the most common threats we face. It can affect individuals and businesses and have significant consequences on the victim’s financial situation. “It is important that if you ever receive one of these links that you do not click on it and provide personal or banking information. Instead, forward the message to the text or email reporting system and block the email address or phone number so the fraudsters cannot reach you again.”

36

People are also being advised to take time to consider what you have received and what the message is asking you. PCC Mark Shelford, national PCC lead for Economic and Cybercrime, said online: “Phishing scams are another example of fraudsters wanting to financially benefit from both individuals and businesses. Please be vigilant of unexpected messages or calls that ask for your personal or financial information. “If you do receive call or message that you think might be a scam, do not respond to it. Instead, contact the organisation directly using contact information from the company’s official website and not the links or numbers provided in the message. “Your bank or any other official source will never ask you to supply personal information via email or text message. The more awareness this is around such scams, the more people we can protect to falling victim to these heartless scammers.” Virtually all phone providers are part of a scheme that allows you to report suspicious text messages for free by forwarding it to 7726. When a text is reported to 7726, the provider can investigate the origin of the text and rearrange to block or ban the sender if it’s found to be malicious. Since May 2022, 13,000 scams nationally have been removed as a result of suspicious text messages reported using the 7726 service.

HOW TO DEAL WITH PHISHING SCAMS

1. If you have any doubts about a message, contact the organisation directly. Don’t use the numbers or address in the message – use the details from their official website. Remember, your bank (or any other official source) will never ask you to supply personal information via email. 2. If you think an email could be a scam, you can report it by forwarding the email to: report@phishing.gov.uk. Send us emails that feel suspicious, even if you’re not certain they’re a scam – we can check.

As the largest food redistribution charity in the region, FareShare South West is partnering with local authorities and partner charities to deliver food to more than 50 sites across the South West throughout the Summer break. The ‘Food for Holiday Projects’ work aims to help children and families facing food insecurity over the school summer holidays. WORLD JUMP DAY 20th JULY Many ideas are floated to help combat global warming, and World Jump Day is one of them.

INTERESTING FACT

The aim of the day is to shift the orbit of Earth, to extend daylight hours and to create a more standardized climate throughout the world. The concept was promoted by German artist, Torsten Lauschmann, and the first World Jump Day was slotted for July 20, 2006. He claimed that 600 million people in the Western Hemisphere were going to jump at the same time. This proposal was actually a satirical art installation, but it reminded people about the effects of global warming. Earth weighs 100 trillion trillion pounds, and the average weight of a human is 137 pounds, which multiplied by 600 million equals 8,220 million pounds. Working out the pound-force of that figure involves a complicated formula, but rest assured that 600 million people jumping simultaneously (if anyone could organize the event) would make no difference to Earth’s orbit. But, hey, it’s fun. Jump! 44

The world's first bungee jump from the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol 35 years ago. The jump took place on 1 April, 1979, and was undertaken by members of the Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club. It led to the birth of a worldwide sport. David Kirke jumped off the bridge in top hat and tails with champagne in his hand followed by Simon Keeling going over the edge in the second jump. The jumpers were arrested shortly afterwards and then released on the promise they would never do it again, but they continued with jumps in the US from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Royal Gorge Bridge, spreading the concept worldwide. By 1982, they were jumping from mobile cranes and hot air balloons.

Marlwood School appeal for ex-pupils to celebrate 50-year anniversary

An appeal has been launched to trace people in their early sixties who were among the first intake of pupils at Marlwood School when it relocated to Alveston in September 1972. Marlwood headteacher Seema Purewal said: “It will be 50 years since the school first opened the doors of its new buildings in Alveston, received its first comprehensive intake and was renamed Marlwood School. “We would love to invite anyone who started their secondary education at Alveston in 1972 to be a part of our celebrations, so if that’s you please let us know. “We’d be particularly interested to share any old photos of you and your classmates, or memories of your early experiences here.” Anyone born in 1961 or 1962 who was part of Marlwood’s first comprehensive intake is invited to send their name and contact details to Seema Purewal at MarlwoodSchool@ CSET.co.uk, together with photos and/or notes of memories of what life was like when they started at the school.

48

Originally founded in 1606 as Thornbury Free School and based in Thornbury, the school merged with Attwell’s Free School in 1879 to become Thornbury Grammar School, and moved to a site on Gloucester Road before transferring to its current buildings in Alveston in 1972, when it became a comprehensive school and was re-named Marlwood. The school converted to academy status in 2014 and is now part of Castle School Education Trust (CSET), with sixth form provision shared with The Castle School and based in the old Thornbury Grammar School buildings. Marlwood and The Castle School are currently jointly benefitting from an £18.1m refurbishment and upgrading programme, funded by CSET and South Gloucestershire Council, which will include new classrooms for art, design technology and science. CSET is responsible for a total of seven South Gloucestershire schools, educating children and young people across the primary, secondary and sixth form key stages.
