BRISTOL LIGHT FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR 2022
Bristol Light Festival will return this year to fill the city with light and colour, and showcase Bristol as the vibrant, playful and creative city that we know and love. From 1st - 6th March, Bristol Light Festival will feature six world premier works, brand new for Bristol, alongside some of the best of the UK’s talent, all making their Bristol debut at carefully selected locations across the city centre. Visitors can wander and explore the city’s streets to see the light art works come to life and enjoy Bristol’s wonderful retail and hospitality businesses along the way. Bristol Light Festival will appear along some of the city centre's well-trodden paths as well as in some unexpected locations. At each spot visitors will be able to see, experience and play with installations that are visiting the South West for the first time. This year’s festival will benefit from a successful grant application from the Arts Council England which will support the delivery of a selection of daylight and green energy installations, adding a new dimension to the event and the opportunity for those visiting and working in the city to experience some of the artworks throughout the day. By day and night, the event is the perfect opportunity for friends, colleagues, and families to meet.
4
This is the second festival brought to you by Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District (BID), supported by 760 local businesses. This year's festival is also in partnership with Redcliffe & Temple BID, Arts Council England, Bristol’s City Centre & High Streets Recovery and Renewal programme, which is funded by Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority’s Love our High Streets project and Cabot Circus. Festival is being curated and produced by Bristol-based Creative Director, Katherine Jewkes. Everything is free to attend and open to everyone across the full week. We can’t wait to welcome you to explore Bristol through light.

Prevent windscreen frost build up using common household objects Drivers are being urged to follow certain tips to prevent frost from building up on their cars as the temperatures fall below freezing.
Windshield wiper blades?
With winter in full swing, experts are urging motorists to take action to prevent frost from forming on their windscreen after a cold night.
Finally, if you don’t have special windshield wiper fluid for colder seasons, you can adapt it.
Drivers can cover their windscreen with rubber bath mats or a folded sheet to prevent frost from building up before a chilly night.
Just add five tablespoons of rubbing alcohol to your wiper fluid tank to keep it from freezing inside your car.
The windshield wipers can be used to keep it in place.
Wipe them down with a soft cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol to keep them from sticking to your windshield.
You could also use this mix as a car de-icer. Just activate the wiper fluid and you’ll be clearing your windshield in a cinch.”
Do not to use newspaper as it is too thin and To make life a bit easier, the side mirrors can can freeze onto the windscreen. be covered with carrier bags and secured with Some could also make at home remedies rubber bands to stop them freezing. to keep their car windows from freezing, by making different solutions, including mixing Experts at Kwik Fit also provided some advice three parts vinegar to one part water. for drivers looking for an easy getaway in the mornings. These solutions have a lower freezing temperature than water and therefore only freeze over at much lower temperatures. Experts have advised drivers to use household items to prevent frost from building up.
Drivers are being warned of the potential fines they face if they do not clear their vision properly before setting off.
They advise: “Should temperatures fall even below the freezing point of our economical It’s annoying to wait until the windscreen de-icers, and you don’t have a car windscreen clears when you’re in a hurry, it’s freezing frost cover at hand, there’s no need to worry. cold and the glass is frosted over. You can also use a towel, a piece of carpet, cardboard or even a shower curtain to protect your windshield from freezing over. Another trick is to park in the right direction: Just have your car front window point east – that’s where the sun rises. Especially if you don’t have to head out before sunrise and nothing blocks the sun, you can just let nature do all the work for you. 6
But it is an offence to drive without properly defrosting or demisting your vehicle and the police can fine you for relying on ‘porthole vision’ - where drivers leave a gap big enough to see out of but not the whole windscreen. Using a vehicle with parts or accessories in a ‘dangerous condition’ could result in a fine of £60 and three penalty points. Though the offences and consequences could be greater if you cause an accident.

Bristol ranked as 41st most international university in the world
University of Bristol students are studying at one of the world’s most international institutions, a new study has found. Rankings compiled by Times Higher Education placed University of Bristol as the 41st most international university in the world, putting it among fellow globetrotters such as the University of Queensland, University of Vienna and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
“Being included in Times Higher Education ‘World’s Most International Universities’ is proof that Bristol not only has a world-beating student experience and is at the forefront of academic excellence, but is also a destination of choice for all nationalities.”
Bristol welcomed staff and students from around the world. More than 8,000 students from 145 countries study at the University and its staff roster is just as diverse.
Times Higher Education ranked universities on their proportions of international staff and students, the number of papers co-authored with international partners and their reputations among academics from around the world.
The University’s International Office helps students apply to Bristol, travel there safely and thrive when they arrive in Bristol. The Global Lounge, a multicultural hub that brings together the University’s many nationalities, launched in 2019 and is now based in a relaxing and welcoming space in Senate House. Caroline Baylon, Director of International at the University of Bristol, said in a statement online: “The University is incredibly proud of its multicultural and diverse population, which we believe has real benefits to the city.
20
Announcing the table, Times Higher Education said in an online statement : “Research suggests that diverse communities of students improve the teaching and learning experience, while opportunities for students to spend time abroad better prepares them to become global citizens.” The UK ranked highly in the study, with the University of Oxford coming fifth and Cambridge and Imperial College London coming joint sixth. However, they were pipped to the top spot by the University of Hong Kong who came first.

What to know about CoolSculpting
Sometimes it can feel like no matter what you do, how much you exercise and how religiously you log every morsel that goes in your mouth into calorie-counting software, the body composition just does not seem to shift. Of course, if you’ve made significant lifestyle changes – and an effort to commit to them – it’s very unlikely that your journey feels completely pointless. However, what about those stubborn fat deposits that just won’t go away? Upper arms, “muffin tops”, stomach rolls…they can be a major annoyance for many of us even at or close to ideal body weight. Of course, some people will tell you getting a liposuction will solve all your problems. However, although highly effective when performed appropriately by an experienced surgeon, liposuction is not exactly a walk in the park. This highly invasive procedure is associated with substantial downtime, possible side effects ranging from minor to very serious, and significant costs involved due to the level of expertise and care required. Besides, not everyone is comfortable with the idea of going under a knife for purely appearance-driven reasons. What if there was a non-surgical procedure that could melt away fat with no downtime and minimal complications… 22
But what if we was to say that this safe, affordable cosmetic treatment already exists – except instead of melting fat, it freezes it? The name is cryolipolysis, also known as CoolSculpting or “fat freezing” – and today, we’ll reveal all you need to know about this procedure, and if it’s safe after all. What is “fat freezing”? In a nutshell, cryolipolysis, or “fat freezing”, works by exposing fat cells in the chosen area of the body (e.g. stomach, flanks, thighs – or any other stubborn fat tissue deposits) to very low temperatures. As a result, fat cells are frozen to death – and subsequently eliminated by the body just like any other waste would. Best of all, the surrounding tissues remain intact and undamaged, unlike after liposuction which inevitably promotes scarring! There is not much discomfort involved, either. During your appointment, which typically lasts for 35 mins or under, the operator will apply a suction cup applicator to the treated area. Not going to lie, it feels a little unusual, and you may feel cold while the device is in operation (it’s called freezing for a reason). However, mild discomfort related to the cooling sensation is about as bad as it gets. No pain, no downtime!
Sometimes, multiple areas can be treated within the same appointment, but it’s not always possible. In addition, multiple sessions are often required to achieve the desired results – the exact timeline will depend on your body composition and goals. Treatment usually start from around £1600 but typically cost between £3000 and £6000 depending on how many areas and if you have treatments repeated and even though it’s cheaper compared to surgical interventions, make sure you can afford repeated treatments if need be, or hold off until you can. Speaking of repeated procedures, don’t make appointments too close to each other unless specifically advised by your nurse specialist, as it takes a while for your lymphatic system to get rid of the dead fat cells. If you are going to need two rounds of treatments, the second round can be done four weeks after your first. As such, you can expect to see full results at approximately 12 weeks post treatment, so wait until then to decide if you need more freezy work done. As a general guide, you can expect to lose approximately an inch per treatment – but this obviously does vary due to factors such as body part treated, your metabolism, how large your fat deposits are to start with, and so on.
Is “fat freezing” safe? In general, most health practitioners and scientists agree that cryolipolysis is a safe and effective treatment to reduce fat deposits in most areas. Over 5 million treatments have been performed world wide, with hundreds of studies, and providing you don't overeat and put weight on, your results will be long lasting. To minimise the chance of unexpected results, make sure you’re the right candidate for the “fat freezing” procedure. Some of the criteria, for both men and women, include: •
Being within 6-12 kg of your ideal body weight (less is even better). CoolSculpting is not supposed to be a dramatic, 50 kg of weight off kind of procedure. Instead, it works best and smoothest when only reasonable “polishing” of desired areas is required.
•
Being generally healthy and not taking any medications that can promote uncontrolled weight gain
•
Maintaining a good exercise and nutrition regimen
•
Being prepared to undergo multiple procedures to achieve optimal results (those may or may not be required).
Conclusion Cryolipolysis is a safe, effective procedure that helps get rid of stubborn unwanted fat in most areas of the body, such as thighs, upper arms, abdomen, chin, flanks, and everything in between. However, if you’re still in the early days of your health journey and carry over 15 kg of excess weight, you may need to wait a bit before committing to “fat freezing” sessions, as the results won’t be as dramatic as they could be, and you might also get unwanted lumps and bumps. Otherwise, go for it – and you won’t ever regret getting the procedure done, as the results are truly amazing, and there is virtually no downtime. Just be sure to use a reputable company to the correct credentials. 23
Focus on: Brislington West Helping to double our tree canopy cover across the city:
Jubilee-athon!
Bristol Liberal Democrats were in celebratory mood at City Hall last week as yet another Lib Dem motion received widespread support from across the chamber. Following last month’s winning motion on Bristol’s governance, in which we secured a referendum on the directly elected mayoral system, this time we tabled a motion to deal with the serious issue of tree canopy cover across the city of Bristol. We are proud that the motion received unanimous support. You can read all about it by clicking here
Can you support Jubilee Pool with their first major fundraising event? The Community Asset Transfer (CAT) is well underway but the process is likely to incur many costs and so fundraising is vital. The event is a 24-hour swimming relay at the pool on 29 and 30 January, where they’ll be attempting to collectively swim the distance between Jubilee Pool and Buckingham Palace! Participants, fundraisers and volunteers are all needed. Click here

Vote for the Friends of Brislington Brook: We were delighted to nominate the Friends of Brislington Brook (FOBB) for a parks award recently and are even more delighted that they have made it to the shortlist! The awards celebrate the volunteers in Bristol and Bath who go the extra mile for their green spaces and local communities. Please show your appreciation of all the volunteers at FOBB by giving them your vote. You have until 5pm on the 26th January to cast your vote. The winner will be given a cash prize of £200 towards their work: Click here
Keeping in touch: We believe in keeping residents up-to-date on local issues and publish a quarterly newsletter, ‘Focus on Brislington West’, which is delivered to every household across the ward. Hundreds of local residents have also signed up for our monthly eFocus which we deliver via email.
Warning for walkers Arnos Court Park: Local residents have been in touch to warn us about the slippery, muddy conditions at the top of Arnos Court Park near the steps which lead to the connecting gate into Arnos vale Cemetery. There have been reports of several people having fallen over in the quagmire. We have written to the council to see if it is possible to put down some bark chippings as a temporary measure in order to make this popular route a little safer for users. Longer term, we are hopeful that a new path joining the steps to the pre-existing path at the bottom of the hill can be constructed this year. We’ll keep you posted. Repair Café

Final weeks to have your say on proposed bus, cycling and walking improvements
Since the start of December Bristol residents have been considering a series of proposed improvements to the number 2 bus route, known as the A37 to the A4018, which goes from Cribbs Causeway to Stockwood via the city centre. The proposals form part of a wider transformation by Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority over the next decade to make Bristol’s transport network better for all. The climate emergency and Bristol’s 2030 carbon neutral targets mean that radical changes are needed to the road network that will transform bus travel and encourage cycling and walking.
•
Bus infrastructure enhancements to help buses move quickly through the traffic
•
Improved journey times and reliability
•
Better pedestrian spaces, which provide safe crossing points and attractive streetscapes
•
Reallocation of road space for cyclists to make it easier and safer to cycle
Councillor Don Alexander, Cabinet member for Transport, said: “We’re wor king to transform Bristol’s transport network, ease congestion, reduce carbon and improve our air quality by introducing quicker and more reliable bus travel and improved walking and cycling routes.
Residents, businesses, commuters and people who travel along the number 2 bus route are being reminded to give their views on detailed designs and proposals before the consultation comes to a close towards the end of the month.
“It’s great to see so many people have already had their say on our community-informed designs, and we’re eager for even more people to get involved to make sure the proposals are right for the city.
It follows public engagement last year, where the council invited everyone to give their feedback on what improvements are needed along the A37 and A4018.
“We are particularly interested to hear your thoughts on our plans for The Triangle and Park Street, and the junction at West Town Lane and roads such as Hazelbury Road, David’s Street and Mowbray Road.
The detailed proposals for the number 2 bus route look to achieve:
28
“We’re also keen for views on Park Street Avenue and Berkeley Avenue, as well as Holmes Grove, Henleaze Gardens, Lake Road and Parry’s Lane, as these roads could potentially be closed to traffic. “Our plans don’t include pedestrianising Park Street. However, we are proposing to prevent through traffic which would then access Park Street via St George’s Road, while use by buses and HGVs would continue.” The proposed designs can be accessed on the Travelwest website, along with further information and details of a series of drop-in information sessions continuing across the city in the north, south and central sections of the A37 and A4018. The council is also asking for views on proposed improvements to Park Row, Perry Road, Upper Maudlin Street and Colston Street. This associated consultation seeks feedback on proposals which aim to support local businesses to stay and thrive by increasing the number of pedestrians, and manage traffic flow and reduce pollution in the area around Park Row. The online survey for this consultation can be found on the council’s consultation website.

Tenant Selection – Part Art, Part Science.
In our business, we regularly meet landlords Pre- viewing, what types of things are we when things go wrong. This can be for many looking for? reasons but, by far the most common, are issues with tenants. Strangely, given this fact, • Kindness, consideration and politeness tenant selection often takes a back seat and (will someone speak to my team, with is either assigned to a junior member of staff the same level of respect that they would or, treated like a process requiring form filling, give to me or to my tenant manager or a cursory glance and a credit check. a person they perceive to be a decision maker) Without a doubt referencing is crucial, but we view it as only one part of the tenant selection • Rudeness (are they rude, arrogant or procedure. We look at tenant selection as part unnecessarily abrupt) science and part art, where the referencing – (right to rent checks, credit checks, • Consistency (do they contradict references) make up the Science and the themselves, or are they telling lies) interpersonal equation makes up the Art. • If it’s an HMO, will they be a good mix for Often landlords and letting agents attempt to the house (discuss this with them, it’s for speed up and short circuit the tenant their benefit as much as the rest of the selection process with the use of online forms house) and systems. Is it any wonder, in areas of high demand, where you can be dealing with • Do their needs and wants accord with the hundreds of enquiries for every vacancy. landlord’s (again this is for their benefit The problem here is that by using only forms as much as the landlord’s – make sure to and systems, you can run the risk of missing discuss any pertinent issues with them) crucial touch points. If you couple this with a cursory viewing, then this isn’t really tenant Following the above, will ensure that, by the selection at all – it’s a “first come, first served time you get to the viewing, you will have a buffet” where your property is on the menu good sense of the applicant. Also, the and your sanity is given to chance! There is applicant should have a greater sense of nothing wrong with a form, as a first stage you, and this will enable a more honest and procedure but don’t leave it there. You would relaxed atmosphere during the viewing. Allow be surprised by what kind of a “feel” you can 20-30 minutes for the appointment and relax get from an email exchange and/or a and remind yourself of the purpose of the telephone call. Couple this with a good quality meeting. viewing, where you have had 2/3 “touchpoints” beforehand, and you are leaving far less to chance! 32
The purpose is not to get as many people through the door as possible, showing them the features of the property and stopping only to consider whether they appear “vaguely human” but to make a genuine assessment of whether you believe they would make a good tenant. In order to do this, consider the following – and this is where the art comes in. At the viewing: •
Does your "feel" for the applicant, accord with the sense you have of them, from your other “touchpoints” – is there consistency and truth so far?
•
Are they courteous? If you invite them to treat the property with respect (for example, when you take your shoes off at the door) do they accept and follow suit?
• • •
The above might seem like difficult questions to answer in a 20-30 timeslot and without the aid of a crystal ball – but here are five points to take into consideration which might help: 1. This is number one for a good reason, because over the years we have learned to rely on this one a lot. Follow you gut instinct! Listen to your gut, especially when you meet a person for the first time, as it will give you a visceral reaction before you have a chance to think. Your gut will relay whether you are at ease with a person or not and it is your “internal truth meter.”
2. Don’t shy away from the small talk. Maybe you feel uneasy about small talk in a formal situation but relax, it can give you the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the applicant. Small talk helps you observe how a person behaves in normal situations. You can then use this as a benchmark to accurately Are they polite? spot any behaviour that is out of the ordinary. If you get a baseline for how the prospective Do you like them? tenant normally acts, you will get a better feel for them as an individual and be better able to Do you consider that they would make a spot any inconsistencies. So, get them away good tenant? This might sound similar to from the “script” and “off topic” and find out the point above and, I guess that it is but, what they are really like. the subtle difference here is – will there be mutual respect and when things go wrong (as they often do) do you feel that they will stand “side by side” with you Continued next page and be understanding and cooperative or not?
33
• 3. Think about their word choices. What are they really telling you? Often people will give away what they are trying to conceal by their choice of language. A classic one here is the two-word construction of “yeah-no” this can give away ambivalence, or the phrase “I try not to” indicating that they know that the correct answer to a question is "no" but that really their answer is "yes!" 4. Body language – another big one for us. Does this match their spoken language? A classic here is a smile which doesn’t reach the eyes or a “yes” coupled with the shake of the head. Do you feel that there is a consistency with what the individual says with their words, and what they say with their body language? 5. And we’ve saved this one until last because it’s a big one – lies, and how can you tell? Here are a few signs to look for: •
Does their voice change?
•
Does their body language change?
•
Do their eye movements change (averting, looking down, won’t look at you – when this has previously not been an issue)
34
•
Do they stop using the word “I” (often people who are uncomfortable telling lies, will stop referring to themselves in the first person)
•
Is the content of what they are saying too elaborate or detailed? Sometimes when people lie, they rehearse a whole story beforehand. If this is the case, listen for something that sounds rehearsed.
•
Do they fidget and look uncomfortable or nervous when they haven’t previously?
Getting the individual off topic (as described above), will help you establish a baseline and make better assessments about whether you feel you are hearing the truth, or not. Take the time and the effort to get the tenant selection right, it will make a whole world of difference. A good landlord and tenant relationship, where both parties respect each other and appreciate the part that each other plays and its importance in the lettings process is a wonderful thing – when you get this right, most other aspects will fall into place, so give it the consideration and importance it deserves!

Bristol Charities asks local people for ideas for community facilities in redeveloped Vassall Centre, Fishponds
One of Bristol's oldest charities is calling on people in Fishponds to say what facilities they'd like to see for the local community in the redeveloped Vassall Centre. Bristol Charities is working on plans to create a balanced new neighbourhood centre for multigenerational living and working at the Centre. This will include accessible, sustainable work and meeting spaces for current and potentially new tenants, alongside new, high quality affordable housing for older people and families, as well as facilities for the wider community.
Suggestions so far include a café, nursery, spaces for meetings and events, a small library and outside space to meet and relax. The charity is sending out letters and has set up an online survey to gather views, which will help inform their updated proposals to be shared with the community in the next few weeks. Suggestions so far include a café, nursery, spaces for meetings and events, a small library and outside space to meet and relax.
Having completed an initial round of consultation, Bristol Charities is now looking for ideas for the publicly accessible parts of the project, to maximise local people's use and enjoyment of the facilities on offer. This includes the potential community uses and activities that could be included in the new building, as well as how to make these as welcoming as possible.
The project team is also looking for ideas to commemorate and celebrate the centre's historic role and legacy within the designs, such as an exhibition or art installation. Starting life as a hospital facility for American soldiers in 1945, the Vassall Centre later became a medical limb replacement facility and currently offers affordable, accessible workspace and conference facilities for businesses, charities and not-for-profit organisations.
38
Anne Anketell, chief executive officer at Bristol Charities says:
“We are really interested in finding out what community facilities would work for local people and ensure the new neighbourhood centre benefits residents in Fishponds, so we’d urge people to take part in our survey, which will only take a few minutes to complete.” Bristol Charities is committed to retaining a high level of accessibility for which the Vassall Centre is well known and has appointed an independent accessibility consultant, Centre for Accessible Environments (CAE), to provide specialist advice on developing its plans. The team is also committed to increasing biodiversity, with new trees, planting and space for wildlife, and is appointing a landscape ecologist to help with this aspect of the proposals. There was good engagement with the local community during the first phase of consultation, which involved meetings, presentations and an exhibition at the Vassall Centre, which will remain there and be updated as the proposals are developed. In addition to lots of positive feedback and suggestions, there were some shared concerns, particularly from adjacent neighbours, about the potential impact the proposed development might have on their properties, as well as questions as to why the existing buildings could not be retained and refurbished.
Anne Anketell explains: "The existing buildings are now more than 75 years old, offer very low levels of energy efficiency and sustainability and have reached the end of their practical lifespan. Upgrading them would be prohibitively costly and would not enable much-needed new homes for older people and families to be created in the area. "The views of local people are very important to us. We have listened carefully to the concerns of adjacent neighbours and are taking their issues into account as we further develop our proposals. People will get another opportunity to see the revised plans and comment on them in the next round of consultation in the next few weeks before we submit a planning application." Bristol Charities provides opportunities and support for people and communities to improve lives through grants, housing and charitable projects in Bristol. It is a UK registered charity providing a range of affordable sheltered, retirement and extra care housing facilities for older people.

mess in the kitchen can be demoralising. I can’t cook in a dirty kitchen, and having A to clean it up before I can even get started
1. Clean as you go. The concept of cleaning as you go is fundamental to maintaining a clean kitchen. It means that you clean up as you’re cooking or using the kitchen. Examples of this idea in action include wiping up spills on the counter right away, putting ingredients back when you’re done with them, and washing dirty dishes while dinner is in the oven.
Here are some of the best ways to keep your kitchen in perpetual tip-top shape.
2. Do a nightly counter sweep. Paper and other clutter tends to collect on kitchen counters. When it’s left out, it multiplies. Make sure this doesn’t happen by clearing off your counters and putting things where they belong every night as part of your “kitchen shut down” routine.
drains my energy. So the kitchen needs to stay in a basic and general state of cleanliness and order. As the hardestworking room in the house, and the place where the messiest messes are often made, this is a feat that’s best accomplished with some principles that are kept firmly in place.
3. Wash these three tools immediately after using them. Don’t let cheese graters, strainers, or chef’s knives sit before being cleaned. Cleaning them right away means you won’t have to deal with the arduous task of scrubbing dried-on food from these tricky items.
5. Make the refrigerator clean-out a regular task. Yes, you’ll still have to deep clean your fridge every once in a while, but if you want to maintain a clean kitchen, you’ll need to regularly check for produce that’s going bad and leftovers that need to be tossed. Tying this inventory-taking to your grocery shopping trips will remind you to do it and will also help cut down on wasted food and unnecessary spending.
4. Organise the cabinet beneath your sink. Having your cleaning tools and products accessible is key to maintaining a pristine kitchen. You probably store a majority of them in the cabinet under your sink. And that’s great — you just need to make sure it’s organized, so that you can easily grab what you need, when you need it. 6. Create kitchen worktop zones. If you designate counter areas for specific tasks, you prevent all the worktops from getting dirty when you’re working in the kitchen. For instance, if you bake only in the corner where your stand mixer lives, you know you only have to wipe down that counter (and the area around the sink) when you’re done whipping up your cookies. 7. Run the dishwasher before it’s too full. Chances are, you need to run your dishwasher more often than you think you do. If you put it off too long, and you can’t fit anything else in it, it no longer becomes useful and then dirty dishes have to sit (or get hand-washed!). Try to get in the habit of running it every night after dinner. 8. And empty it right away. If you run the dishwasher at night, you can unload in the morning while you wait for the tea to brew. This way, you start the day with an empty dishwasher that can be loaded as dishes get dirtied.
40
9. Be extremely selective about what stays out on your worktops. Crowded spaces tend to harbor messes more easily than empty ones. Counters that are kept clear offer no place for clutter and dirty dishes to hide. This means everyone in the house might be more likely to put their stuff away.
10. “Shut down” the kitchen every night. Essentially, this means you never go to bed with a dirty kitchen. Ever. It’s most straightforward to shut down your kitchen as you clean it up after dinner, but sometimes you may make the next day’s lunches after dinner or prepare an evening snack, so take that into account if you need to. Shutting down the kitchen means that all your daily kitchen must-do tasks are completed, including running the dishwasher and emptying the trash, for instance.

CCTV LEGAL REQUIREMENTS AND LAWS EXPLAINED FOR DOMESTIC USE More and more people are starting to invest in CCTV cameras, both for domestic use. They help protect homes from criminal activity, as well as inadvertently recording other occurrences, such as road traffic collisions, for example. There’s no doubting that CCTV cameras are incredibly useful and worth investing the time and money in. However, there are legalities which must be adhered to with regards to Can I install CCTV at home? The short answer to this is yes, you have the right to protect your property and CCTV will do just that. Before buying and installing your CCTV system, ensure you have a definitive answer to the following questions: •
Why do I need CCTV?
•
What do I want the CCTV cameras to record?
•
Are there any other measures I can take
How do I comply with the DPA? Simply, you must follow the guidelines that have been set by the ICO. Different rules and regulations must be adhered to depending on whether you plan to use it for domestic or commercial purposes. Domestic CCTV can be controversial, as a result, there are guidelines which must be followed: •
You must have a valid reason for installing CCTV on your premises.
•
You need to know the designated areas in which the recording will take place and subsequently notify your neighbours.
•
A sign must be visible, stating that surveillance is taking place.
•
Ensure your camera is positioned away from your neighbours property. If this isn’t feasible, you can use privacy masking.
•
If you wish to operate CCTV outside of your property boundary and do not wish to use privacy masking, you must register as a CCTV operator with the ICO.
•
You’re not allowed to record conversations between members of the public.
•
You cannot keep recordings for longer than necessary (31 days is standard).
•
Ensure the date and time is set correctly.
•
Only use collected footage for the purpose of protecting your property.
to help increase the protection of my property? Do you need permission to install CCTV? To install CCTV on a domestic property, permission isn’t normally required. If you live in a listed building or in a conservation area, there may be some restrictions with regard to the installation of security cameras. To check, speak to your local planning authority before purchasing equipment. Top Tips for Saving Time in the Office Managing your time in the home office is difficult With a huge list of things to do and so little time, it’s not unusual to sometimes feel a little out of your depth. So, what can you do to make the most of the hours you spend sat at your desk? Well, thanks to digital
Capture all of your thoughts in one place Writing down your thoughts and ideas is all well and good, until you spill a glass of water on your notepad, or the cleaner throws your vital Post-It note in the bin. Not to mention that you’ll end up with a chaotic pile of paper on your desk.

Track your time in the office Wasting hours on end by procrastinating is easy, but tracking your time is a good way to stay accountable. Why not set a timer up on your phone whilst you work through your to-do list? Making a note of how long you spend on different tasks throughout the day can help you stay on track and will show you whether you’re dedicating the right attention to your most important tasks. Control the music from your desk Bringing your office to life with a little of music in the afternoons is a great way to boost morale but getting up to change a song sometimes or deciding what everyone wants to listen to can take more time out of your day than you might expect. There are some great music streaming services that are licensed for businesses to use, and with a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi speaker, everyone in the office can add their own choice to the queue. That way, everyone gets to hear what they want, and you don’t need to worry about time-wasting tune debates. To save even more time, some services allow you to schedule tracks in advance for certain times of the day, so you can have a motivational Monday morning playlist cued up for when you arrive at work.
Schedule your social media posts If your job includes posting on social media, here’s hoping that you already schedule all your posts in advance. If not, there are a whole hosts of tools which could save you a lot of time wasted on uploading posts throughout the week. On most platforms you can schedule Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook posts from the same place. There is no point spending time logging onto each social media site every day and copying content from your plan to upload live. Instead, uploading your weeks’ worth of posts in advance can save you from switching between tasks every day, saving you time in the long run – especially if you’re posting regularly! Just make sure you cast your eye over them in case anything has changed which means you might want to tweak any of the posts. Remember, getting a little help from apps and technology during your working day is not ‘cheating’; getting into the routine of using everyday tech saves time in the office and can really boost your overall productivity.
