Heat pump grants worth £5,000 to replace gas boilers
Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said the grants to support the adoption of heat pumps, available from next April, would play a role in that, by helping to bring down the cost of the relatively new technology by 2030.
Homeowners will be offered subsidies of £5,000 from next April to help them to replace old gas boilers with low carbon heat pumps.
Currently an air source heat pump costs between £6,000 and £18,000, depending on the type installed and the size of a property.
The grants are part of the government’s £3.9bn plan to reduce carbon emissions from heating homes and other buildings.
“As the technology improves and costs plummet over the next decade, we expect low-carbon heating systems will become the obvious, affordable choice for consumers,” Mr Kwarteng said.
It is hoped no new gas boilers will be sold after 2035. The funding also aims to make s ocial housing and public buildings more energy efficient. Experts say the budget is too low and the strategy not ambitious enough. Ministers say the subsidises will make heat pumps a comparable price to a new gas boiler. But the £450m being allocated for the subsidies over three years will cover a maximum of 90,000 pumps. Heating buildings is a large contributor to the UK’s overall greenhouse gas emissions, representing 21% of overall emissions, so there is pressure on the Heat and Buildings Strategy to deliver effective reductions. It comes as the government prepares to outline its overarching strategy for how the UK will reduce its dependency on fossil fuels and achieve sharp reductions in emissions over the next couple of decades.
4
“Through our new grant scheme, we will ensure people are able to choose a more efficient alternative in the meantime.” While homeowners will be encouraged to switch to a heat pump or other low-carbon technology when their current boiler needs replacing, there is no requirement to remove boilers that are still working, the government emphasised. Writing in the Sun, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said “the Greenshirts of the Boiler Police are not going to kick in your door with their sandal-clad feet and seize, at carrot-point, your trusty old combi”. Mr Johnson also sought to reassure voters about the government’s ambitions by stressing that the costs of low-carbon heating systems would go down over time while their introduction would help create thousands of new job opportunities.

Path to improved health
Sports drinks are helpful if you’re planning on exercising at higher than normal levels for more than an hour. They contain carbohydrates and electrolytes that can increase your energy. Remember that a safe ture, remove waste, and lubricate your joints. amount of caffeine to consume each day is no Water is needed for overall good health. more than 400 milligrams. Look to water first You need to drink water every day. Most people have been told they should drink 6 to 8, 8-ounce glasses of water each day. That’s a reasonable goal. However, different people need different amounts of water to stay hydrated. Most healthy people can stay well hydrated by drinking water and other fluids whenever they feel thirsty. For some people, fewer than 8 glasses may be enough. Other people may need more than 8 glasses each day.
Energy drinks are not the same as sports drinks. Energy drinks usually contain large amounts of caffeine. Also, they contain ingredients that overstimulate you (guarana, ginseng, or taurine). These are things your body doesn’t need. Most of these drinks are also high in added sugar. According to doctors, children and teens should not have energy drinks. If staying hydrated is difficult for you, here are some tips that can help:
• Plan water is best for staying hydrated howev er other drinks and foods can help, too. Fruit • and vegetable juices, milk, and herbal teas add to the amount of water you get each day. Even caffeinated drinks (for example, coffee, • tea, and soda) can contribute to your daily water intake. A moderate amount of caffeine • (400 milligrams) isn’t harmful for most people. Here are the caffeine amounts found in popu lar drinks: • 12 ounces of soda: 30 to 40 milligrams • 8 ounces of green or black tea: 30 to 50 milligrams • • 8 ounces black coffee: 80 to 100 milligrams • 8-ounce energy drink: 40 to 250 milligrams However, it’s best to limit caffeinated drinks. Caffeine may cause some people to urinate • more frequently or feel anxious or jittery. Plus, be mindful of what you drink. Some choices may add extra calories from sugar to your diet. Water is also found in fruits and vegetables (for example, watermelon, tomatoes, and lettuce), and in soup broths. 6 Other options
Keep a bottle of water with you during the day. To reduce your costs, carry a reusable water bottle and fill it with tap water. If you don’t like the taste of plain water, try adding a slice of lemon or lime to your drink. Drink water before, during, and after a workout. When you’re feeling hungry, drink water. Thirst is often confused with hunger. True hunger will not be satisfied by drinking water. Drinking water may also contribute to a healthy weight-loss plan. Some research suggests that drinking water can help you feel full. If you have trouble remembering to drink water, drink on a schedule. For example, drink water when you wake up, at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and when you go to bed. Or, drink a small glass of water at the beginning of each hour. Drink water when you go to a restau rant. It will keep you hydrated, and it’s free.
Things to consider If you don’t drink enough water, you may become dehydrated. This means your body doesn’t have enough fluid to operate properly. Your urine can be an indicator if you’re dehydrated. If it’s colorless or light yellow, you’re well hydrated. If your urine is a dark yellow or amber color, you may be dehydrated. There are other signs that can signal you may be dehydrated. They include: • Little or no urine. • Urine that is darker than usual. • Dry mouth. • Sleepiness or fatigue. • Extreme thirst. • Headache. • Confusion. • Dizziness or light headedness. • No tears when crying.
Some people are at higher risk of dehydration, including people who exercise at a high intensity (or in hot weather) for too long, have certain medical conditions (kidney stones, bladder infection), are sick (fever, vomiting, diarrhea), are pregnant or breastfeeding, are trying to lose weight, or aren’t able to get enough fluids during the day. Older adults are also at higher risk. As you get older, your brain may not be able to sense dehydration. It doesn’t send signals for thirst. Note that water makes up more than half of your body weight. You lose water each day when you go to the bathroom, sweat, and even when you breathe. You lose water even faster when the weather is really hot, when you’re physically active, or if you have a fever. Vomiting and diarrhea can also lead to rapid water loss. Be sure to actively drink plenty of water to avoid becoming dehydrated. 7

5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know Were From Bristol
The North American Accent
Blankets
Chocolate
Methodism
There is suggestion that Bristol’s accent directly influenced that of North America. We’re not saying that they’re the same but put them side by side and you can certainly hear a link. This is likely to be because (many, many years ago) the very first Pilgrims set off for America from Bristol’s port and after that trade was strong between the two places for a long, long time. It’s no surprise that the two accents are linked.
It’s true, a native Bristolian called Joseph Fry was the very first person to create the chocolate bar as we know it. Chocolate had been around for a while before hand but it was in the guise of a drink. It was Fry that turned this idea into an actual bar and so the world can thank Bristol (especially Mr Fry!) for the gift of chocolate.
Ribena 12
Now we admit that we can’t be 100% certain on this one but legend does have it that it was a wool merchant from Bristol that actually invented the blanket. His name, Edward Blanket, gives us a clue that he may have been the inventor and we’re pretty sure that he’d be super proud today knowing that the humble blanket is used on every corner of the earth.
The first Methodist preacher was a Bristolian. In 1739 John Wesley took the first steps to a new strain of religion called Methodism. He preached a sermon from Hanham Mount to local miners and similar style sermons were soon incredibly popular. In the same year the very first Methodist chapel was built, also in Bristol.
This popular drink is also from Bristol. It was originally invented at the National Fruit and Cider Institute and is now sold globally. Bristol

Increase in NI and dividend tax – what does this mean for me? The Prime Minister has announced that for the 22/23 tax year, national insurance rates, and dividend rates will increase by 1.25%. Grammatically this is correct but is mathematically misleading. For a basic rate taxpayer, the tax rate on dividends is 7.5%. This will rise to 8.75%, which is an increase of 16.7%. The employed rate of NI is 12% and will rise to 13.25% this represents a 10.4% increase. These are very significant increases, in real terms far above the 1.25% as reported.
So, what can we do to mitigate these increases? On the face of it not a lot. However, there are a few measures we can take:
So, what does this mean for the director on a tax efficient 50k remuneration?
1. Don’t take more dividends than you need to. This needs to be weighed against the risk of keeping additional funds in the company. 2. When recruiting, two part time positions rather than one full time position may help to reduce or eliminate any additional employers national insurance. The above figures are for individuals. It shouldn’t be forgotten that employees NI is also increasing from 13.8% to 15.05%. For small employers who claim the employment allowance of £4000 and where the £4000 continues to cover all of the employers NI there will be no noticeable difference, however, for those paying employers NI, they will see a significant increase in the NI costs of their workforce. 14
3. Ensure you are using alphabetical shares appropriately (i.e. use wife and husbands allowances). 4. Ensure all expenses are claimed as this may reduce the amounts of dividends taken. If you are looking for advice on Ni and dividend tax give us a call on: 0117 923 5394 or email us at enquiries@ tsabusinessadvisors.co.uk or you can visit www.tsabuisnessadvisors.co.uk

Driving in cold weather could break Highway Code rules, lead to fines and licence points
Drivers are being urged to stay safe when driving this winter, or they could risk being fined and having penalty points to their licence. With the weather starting to get colder and the days getting shorter, road users are being warned to make necessary checks before driving. Rules 226 to 237 of the Highway Code address motoring laws in regard to “driving in adverse weather conditions”. Rule 229 specifically sets out what drivers should do before they enter their vehicle. It states: “Before you set off you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows. “You MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible. Make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly. “Remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users. “Check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted.” If drivers do not abide by these Highway Code rules, they could risk a £60 fine. Drivers may also receive penalty points on their driving licence for not abiding by the rules. 18
Motorists could even be in hot water with their car insurance companies if an accident were to occur. If an insurance company finds out drivers were not following the highway code, it could lead to a withheld payout. To demist a windscreen, the RAC advises drivers start the heater off cold and direct the flow of air at the windscreen and windows, then slowly increase the temperature. It does, however, cause a distraction to other motorists when it eventually comes off, so it is worth it to remove the snow whilst demisting the car. Ultimately, when clearing ice and demisting the car, try and ensure all the snow has been removed too. However, if on a public road the highway code states: "You must not leave a vehicle’s engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road." Alongside making the vehicle an easy target for theft, drivers could land themselves with a fine ranging from £20 to £80 depending on the location. This is only applicable on public roads, so motorists are safe to demist on driveways and other areas of private land.

Tips And Tricks For Successful wall paper hanging There are some tasks that you may need to do before hanging your wallpaper. Check our list to ensure your walls are fully ready for wallpaper. With this guide you will get the best finish possible and avoid any nasty surprises further into the project. Have you removed any existing wallpaper? Doing this will give you a smooth finish and avoid air bubbles and creases appearing when you hang the new wallpaper
Have you bought enough wallpaper? It helps to estimate the amount of wallpaper you’ll need for your project. When you measure the height and length of the walls you want to wallpaper, also measure the windows and doors. Allow extra for wastage. We recommend 10% extra, and any unopened rolls can be returned to the store you bought them from. Also, allow for extra when using paper with a large repeat pattern – the pattern repeat is usually stated on the roll label or product information. Are all the rolls of wallpaper the same batch number? Make sure all the rolls have the same batch number printed on the label, as the colours and in some instances, the finish, can vary between batches.
Have you planned how you’re going to hang the wallpaper? We recommend hanging wallpaper vertically Are your walls freshly plastered? unless the pattern requires it to be hung If so, have you sealed them with wall sealer? horizontally. This year’s Bristol Young Heroes have had their bravery and hard work recognised and celebrated at a star-studded awards ceremony. On Friday 1st October over 300 guests gathered at We The Curious for a glitzy gala awards evening to celebrate the 2021 Bristol Young Heroes Awards and see the winners announced. Hosted by former BBC Bristol presenter Emma Britton, the event saw 12 awards given out for astonishing acts of compassion, good deeds and courage. The night was truly spectacular, and fitting with the carnival theme. We saw a wonderful performance from one of our finalists; Razzamataz and an engaging display of Samba drummers and dancers from our friends at Bristol Samba. And the Winner is... Among the award winners on the night were Megan and Grace who were walking home from school when they witnessed an awful road traffic accident. Despite the terrible scene in front of them, both girls stayed and were able to support those injured whilst also calling for help. The girls saved the lives of multiple people that day. CJ Fitton won the overall Young Hero 2021 Award for her ability to overcome a series of extremely challenging personal circumstances and issues, and to come out the other side. Nominated by Youth Moves, she has been working and campaigning to improve the situation for other young people in a similar position, improving the accessibility of mental health support. Another winner, Gabe Rusenieks is a passionate member of Young Bristol’s Kayak club. Since joining in 2020 Gabe has made tremendous progress on the water despite being partially sighted. Gabe has overcome this barrier to continue to develop and grow in an activity that he loves, and is now a key member of the group who also supports others to feel more confident on the water. 22

Parking charges to be introduced at Bristol's Blaise Castle and Oldbury Court estates in November Parking charges are to be introduced at two of Bristol's large countryside estates from November, in a bid to manage parking while raising money to invest in green spaces. New pay and display machines will be installed at the Blaise Castle and Oldbury Court estates by Bristol City Council, with prices starting at £1 for one hour. The council say the new charges are necessary "to help manage parking at both sites and to enable investment in all of Bristol’s parks and green spaces." They also say the new measures are "being delivered to protect junctions, driveways, and bus routes from obstructive parking." Pay and display machines will also be installed at Snuff Mills car park, while single and double yellow lines will also be painted on sections of several surrounding roads in the next few weeks. How much will it cost to park? All three car parks will charge for parking between 9am and 6pm and the standard charges will be: £1 for up to one hour £2 for up to two hours £3 for up to five hours Parking for Blue Badge holders and for two-wheeled motorcyles will remain free, with no time restrictions. Standard parking will also remain free before 9am and after 6pm. Blaise Castle and Oldbury Court car parks may also use overflow parking at busy times, which will also be subject to the same charges as the main car parks.
Blaise Castle Estate car park will have some coach bays for use for coaches and minibuses. Charges for these will vary between £3 and £25 depending on the size of the vehicle and the length of stay. 'Significant investment required' Cllr Asher Craig, Deputy Mayor with responsibility for Communities, Equalities and Public Health, said: “Our parks and green spaces are already hugely popular with Bristolians and we want to ensure they remain attractive places to visit for future generations. "As well as taking care of natural and heritage assets across the city, we plan to host more events and activities and improve play, café, and toilet facilities. This requires significant investment for which the new parking charges will generate vital funds, during a time when the council is under increasing financial pressure due to government cuts and the impacts of the pandemic. Cllr Asher Craig, Deputy Mayor with responsibility for Communities, Equalities a nd Public Health "The new arrangement will help to ensure that green spaces across the city are a welcoming place for locals, visitors and wildlife for years to come.” His colleague, Cllr Don Alexander, Cabinet Member for Transport, added: "The new arrangements will help to encourage a higher turnover of spaces and reduce obstructive parking on surrounding roads. "This will help to ease issues with traffic congestion in the area, which will also help to keep buses running on time. "We would also encourage everyone to walk, cycle or get the bus for short journeys if they can, as this will also help us to deliver clean air for Bristol and meet our commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030.” 25
CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB After a season without club competitions in 2020 it was great to see them return in 2021. Starting a little later in the season than usual, rounds were played and finalists decided in time for finals week-end --- September 18th and 19th. There is a new name on the Ladies Four Wood Singles Trophy --- Carol Green in her first year at the club was victorious in her final against Flo Grimes in a game that either player looked likely to win at different stages of the contest. But – it was Carol who reached the magic 21 shots first --- in fact 22 against the 18 scored by Flo to take the trophy and the title Ladies Champion 2021, and entry in next seasons Champion of Champions Competition run by the Gloucestershire County Association. This was one of two games starting at 10am on the first day of competition --- the other was the Men’s Pairs --- being contested for the first time since 2016. A game of 21 ends duration went very much toward the eventual winners Bill Hatherall and Dave Chilcott and win it they did by 24 shots to 13 against Ken Davies and Mike Porter. Ken Davies was back in action later in the day, this time in the Mixed Pairs where his partner was Mary Lomas. They faced Bob Morgan, in his first season at the club and Sandra Rees in a game of 21 ends duration. A well contested game ended in victory by 27 shots to 18 to Bob and Sandra. Sunday saw just two finals played and the first at 10am was the Sid Holmes Handicap between Ken Davies and Howard Surman, playing in his first ever final and without a handicap. Kens handicap was six meaning that his winning target was 27 shots and he quickly established a commanding lead. Howard rallied later in the game to score 14 shots but it was Ken who came out in front by reaching the required 27. The closest edge of the seat final of the week-end was the last one to be played --- the Men’s Four Wood Singles – between David Hinksman and Dave Chilcott. Starting at 3pm and with a winning target of 21 shots it came down to one shot to win in what had to be the last end of the game. 26
Dave Chilcott started the game well, establishing a lead that looked like it was heading for victory. But David Hinksman fought back until the scores were close and eventually level at 20-20.A good number of bowlers, family and friends had been at the green all week-end to support the finals and the bowlers taking part. When the scores were level --- one more end to play ---- there was silent concentration from all around the green. Four more woods each --- who would find that winning shot. With three of the four woods bowled it was David Hinksman holding shot and there was no need to bowl the last one. What a game --- who says that bowling isn’t exciting!! Competitions and the finals week-end were organised by Chairperson Lis Davies. Gill Gibson was one of a group of ladies who looked after catering and importantly --- the raffle. The weather was great and tribute must be paid to everyone who entered competitions this year --- without competitors there would be no Finals Week-End. Originally called Winter Bowling Break but not possible early in the year due to Covid, the Bowling Break finally took place from October 3rd to 8th --- at Torquay in the Toorak Hotel. Twenty nine people --- bowlers and family, headed for Torquay on October 3rd for a five night break which included four days of indoor bowling on the arena within the hotel complex. Bowling is two hours a day so there is plenty of time to go out and explore Torquay and the surrounding area. Some explorers visited Dartmouth whilst others were to be seen in Brixham and on the water on a ferry back to Torquay --- taking a close look at one of the huge cruise ship anchored in the bay. The now traditional Ten Pin Bowling Night was on Tuesday and supported this year by 27 ten pin bowlers -- has there ever been more? Wednesday night was Theatre Night and a short coach journey to Babbacombe to enjoy an excellent variety show.
The bowling is very much for fun --- not many of the City and Port Bowlers play indoors and it is very different to playing on grass. So --- it is great to win a game and that was exactly what happened on the first day. Playing the Penfields Club from Wolverhampton on Monday Morning saw a win by 44shots to 39. It was the only win of the week but a great start.
The highest scoring Ten Pin Bowlers were --- John Tooze and Gill Hinksman. Lis Davies was given a special prize for doing an excellent job of keeping scores from bowling through the week. Shirley Parker made a presentation to Dee and Gill on behalf of the touring party for their work in making the excellent break happen.
Tuesdays game was against Century from London and on Wednesday and Thursday --Wellington ( Somerset) were the opposition. A great part of bowling in all its forms is meeting and exchanging stories with the opposition and that was certainly achieved this year.
The good news is, 2022 is already booked ----- March 6th --- let’s do it all again.
As traditional as Ten Pin Bowling is the meeting and Prize Giving on Thursday Evening. Organisers Dee and Gill handed out prizes and cards to everyone but especially to winners and to captains of the day. Top Lady Bowler this year was Sandra Rees and top Man --- a very surprised Howard Surman. The highest winning rink was Shirley Parker, Dee Crawley, Sandra Rees and Mervyn White.
The hotel has lots to offer and lots of people took advantage of it --- swim or steam, play bingo or play cards --- it’s all there.
Still to come at the club this year ---- Friday 19th November ---- Social evening and Presentation of Trophies. Singer Dave Dean will be there to entertain. Sunday December 6th ---- thinking caps on for Quiz Night. For further information about the club and its activities please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

Bristol begins it’s campaign for plasma donors as the Bristol centre is only 39% full each day NHS adverts are going live in Bristol because there are not enough people donating plasma. Plasma is used to make lifesaving medicines but the Bristol donor centre in Southmead Road is only around 39% full each day, with around 45 appointments going empty every week. The adverts, across social media and public places, will be part of a sustained campaign to drive up donor numbers over the next six months. The NHS relies on imported plasma medicines however global supplies are under long standing pressure due to rising demand. The pressure has increased due to coronavirus affecting donation in the USA. NHS Blood and Transplant started taking donations this year to bolster long term UK supplies but the number of donors is far behind target. Plasma donation is new and research shows only two in ten people know about it. Awareness is low because plasma donation restarted in April after a break of more than 20 years. (1) The 11 new plasma donor centres are in Barnsley, Birmingham, Bolton, Bristol, Chelmsford, Croydon, Manchester, Reading, Stockton, Stratford, and Twickenham. Plasma is used to make medicines full of donor antibodies which fight bacterial and viral infections. This medicine, known as immunoglobulin, is used to strengthen or stabilise the immune systems of people with rare, lifethreatening diseases.
Around 740 people in the South West region received immunoglobulins last year. Alison Dent, Bristol Plasma Donor Centre Manager, said: “Plasma is a powerful, lifesaving part of your blood, which can be used to make unique, lifesaving medicines. “Since donation restarted we’ve had many fantastic people come in to donate but we still see too many empty chairs every day. “We need your help. “In the next few months, we need thousands more people to start donating at our donor centre. “Plasma donation is safe and easy, it doesn’t take long, and you will help save and improve the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the country.” The campaign will headline with the message that plasma is ‘the medicine in you’, emphasising that for some patients there is no alternative treatment is available. Plasma makes up most of your blood. It’s the fluid that carries everything around the body, including the antibodies which can help the recipient fight infections. Plasma donation is similar to blood donation. In plasma donation, your blood is gradually run through a machine which separates out some of your plasma. Your red blood cells are returned to you, so you can carry on with your day as normal. To help save lives by donating plasma, call 0300 123 23 23, search ‘donate plasma’ or visit www.blood.co.uk/plasma

The garden begins to wind down
The garden begins to wind down in November as deciduous plants enter dormancy. leaves are falling rapidly and wind and rain are on the increase.
Tie in all the plants and secure structures an important winter job is to stake tall plants, climbers and young trees to protect against strong winds. Check that existing ties are not cutting into stems of plants that have grown over the summer. Structures such as arches, pergolas and fences should also be checked and ideally treated with preservatives. If repaired now there is less potential damage in high winds.
Whilst most of nature is hibernating in the colder months, winter is the ideal time to get new trees into the ground. trees are best planted in the late autumn when the soil is still warm but not too dry, giving roots time to acclimatise before the harsher temperatures of winter arrives. whatever your plan to do outside in Nonmember, take time to enjoy the LOOKING GOOD THIS MONTH...TREES garden as it fades, leaving structural plants Why should you plant them? and evergreens to take centre stage. PROTECT TENDER PLANTS the weather is turning so its time to get those plants protected - frost can do serious damage to tender plants. Frost tender plants in pots should be moved to the greenhouse, conservatory or porch. Exotic plants such as palms or tree ferns should be wrapped up for the winter with frost protection material. LIFT AND STORE CORMS AND TUBERS Lift and store plants such as dahlias and tuberous bedding begonias that have been hit by bad weather. store in a dry, frost-free dark place ideally in a layer of sawdust. Check occasionally over winter to ensure they are dry and rot free. remove any that look suspicious to prevent the risk of further infection.

Trees add structure to gardens and landscapes. As well as being used as a focal point for the garden they also make good hedges and screens. they come in a huge number of varieties, shades and position. Whilst most trees are grown for there foliage or flower, some are praised for their bark and branch shapes. Some trees look fantastic in spring while full of flower and other burst into vibrant colour in the autumn. How should you plant them? Young trees should be staked diagonally. This protects them from strong winds and ensures the roots do not get damaged. Most varieties of trees will have specific planting instructions. There is a tree that will thrive in all soil types from wet soil to poor dry land and everything in between.

Feeling the squeeze with bills going Up? Here’s some tips how to save money each month
Working out how to save money each month can seriously increase your contributions to your savings goals. The hardest part? Getting started. Once you’ve found the money-saving tips and tricks that work for you, saving becomes a habit rather than a chore.
With that in mind, let’s look at one saving and budgeting method that may help you reach that 20% savings target. It’s called the 50-3020 rule.
And nothing says “habit” quite like a monthly goal. Setting a target to achieve each month can give you the consistency necessary to build up a healthy savings account over time. Read on to discover the secrets to saving money each month, so you can start improving your financial health today.
If you’re looking for an accessible, easy-to-remember budgeting tool, look no further than the 50-30-20 rule. Created by US Senator Elizabeth Warren when she was a law professor specializing in bankruptcy law, the 50-3020 rule suggests breaking down your monthly expenditures according to the following rules:
How much money should I save each month?
•
50% of your gross income should go towards your needs, e.g., rent, utilities, debt repayments
•
30% should go towards your wants, e.g., eating out, gym subscriptions, holidays
•
20% should go towards your savings goals
How much money you should save each month depends on your lifestyle and expenses. A good target to aim for is 20% of your overall income, but you should feel empowered to start lower if that seems like too much of a stretch. Remember: Every little bit counts. So, how do you know if a 20% savings target is too high or too low? It starts with assessing your current cash flow. Take some time to calculate your monthly income and expenditures — basically, the money coming in and the money going out of your bank account. Keep tabs on any expenses that predictably recur each month, such as your rent, and any that fluctuate based on your spending habits. Before we get into actual savings methods, let’s get something out of the way. Saving money doesn’t have to be painful. In fact, you probably should allow yourself a little wiggle room to enjoy yourself — within reason. If you’re too hard on yourself, you may develop an “all-or-nothing” mentality that ultimately undermines your savings goals. 38
How to use the 50-30-20 rule
