Bristol Craft Beer Festival proudly presents Brave Noise Brew at this years festival

A global collaborative effort to provide inclusive and safe environments for women, BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ throughout the beer industry A celebration of brewing culture in Bristol and beyond, the Bristol Craft Beer Festival 2022 returns on 10-11 June 2022, and will feature a huge variety of the world’s finest beers. One such beer, Brave Noise, a pale ale, is a global collaborative effort from 262 breweries across the globe to provide inclusive and safe environments for women, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ throughout the beer industry. Bristol’s Lost and Grounded is one of the 262 breweries involved and will be providing the brew for the festival in June. Lost and Grounded founder Annie Clements has been pivotal in the brewery producing Brave Noise Brew. At the heart of Lost and Grounded’s key values is inclusivity and supporting the development and education of their team. The Brave Noise collaboration was inspired by those who have shared stories about gender discrimination, racism, sexual assault, and sexual harassment within the brewing industry. Over 70% of women in the UK say they have experienced some kind of sexual harassment in public.

4

By joining the Brave Noise initiative, alcohol-related companies must post their code of conduct publicly, commit to the long-term work for safe and discrimination-free workspaces, and donate a majority of proceeds to a non-profit that reflects the Brave Noise mission. Bristol Craft Beer Festival stands firm and supports this important movement for change, diversity, and inclusiveness. Beer has always been a great unifier, and Brave Noise Brew is helping bring the industry together, facilitating conversations about how as a whole the community can do better, and create inclusive and safe environments for staff and consumers. Festival fans and craft beer lovers will have the chance to bask in the Bristol sunshine while enjoying this delicious brew. Greg Wells, Bristol Craft Beer Festival founder says of Brave Noise: “We have been so inspired by the Brave Noise Organisation and their important message advocating for safe spaces and inclusive environments by requesting breweries be transparent with their policies and commit to long-term changes.

“We will be promoting this message of inclusivity to all 30,000+ attendees coming to all our We Are Beer festivals across the UK this summer, with the US Brave Noise team even joining us on site at London Craft Beer Festival's 10-year anniversary. “We are really pleased to welcome the brew to this year’s Bristol Craft Beer Festival and are excited to see Bristol’s Lost and Grounded get involved in this important movement and encourage the industry to commit to change for the better.”

Annie Clements, Lost and Grounded founder says:

Brienne Allan, Co-Founder Brave Noise, Brewer and Co-Founder of Sacred Profane Brewery and Tankpub said:

“The beer industry can be a male-dominated world, with few protections for female brewers and workers. So, it was a no-brainer for us to get involved with Brave Noise Brew.

“Accountability, transparency and action. That’s what we want to see through the Brave Noise collab and initiative. It’s great to see We Are Beer festivals stepping up to create safe

Change can’t happen overnight, but initiatives like this one are monumental for steering the conversation and change in a promising direction, and here at Lost and Grounded, we are truly committed to making this industry inclusive for all.

spaces at their upcoming events. We need to see more folks around the globe taking the “We include a QR code on our beer that links initiative to create safe spaces at fests.” to our statement of values and code of conduct, plus we donate to an organisation that supports the mission of the collaboration.”www.bristolcraftbeerfestival. co.uk/tickets/

Help raise some much-needed dough for Marie Curie

The end-of-life charity Marie Curie is calling on people across the South West to throw a Blooming Great Tea Party in June and July to help fund vital care and support for those living with a terminal illness, and their families.

Whether you want to bake up a storm at home or pop to the shops for some tasty treats, invite friends, family, neighbours, or colleagues, you’ll be helping support people in your local area living with a terminal illness.

The charity’s fundraising appeal is a piece of cake – simply set a date to host a tea party and invite family, friends, or colleagues to tuck into a delectable treat and catch-up over a cuppa.

“We’d encourage supporters to make the most of the extra-long bank holiday weekend in June too – a perfect occasion to raise a cuppa and some money for a blooming great cause. Just don’t forget to price your slice!”

Every penny raised from a Blooming Great Tea Party will go towards ensuring more people have access to the care and support they need at the end of life.

To find out more about Marie Curie’s Blooming Great Tea Party, including top tips for planning your party, recipes and downloadable materials, visit mariecurie. org.uk/teaparty]mariecurie.org.uk/teaparty

Marie Curie is dependent on public donations so that it can continue caring for people at the end of life in their own homes across the South West. Donations also support the Marie Curie Information and Support services, including a telephone line which provides a listening ear to anyone dealing with any aspect of death, dying and bereavement. Natalie Garland, Marie Curie South West Head of Fundraising, said: “Hosting a Blooming Great Tea Party is easy and great fun. 6

The 5 Most Traditional British Cakes

Over centuries, Brits have developed – and eaten – a cake for every occasion. Culture Trip takes a look at 5 of the classic cakes most adored across the United Kingdom.

Carrot cake

The first use of carrots as a sweetener for puddings is said to have come about in the 10th century, when resourceful Arabian chefs – short on expensive honey – would turn to the humble root vegetable to bring their desserts to life. Carrot cakes have persisted through the ages across the world, but came into prominence in the UK during World War II, where the necessity of rationing forced cake-hungry Brits to get creative with what they could grow. In the spirit of post-war abundance and abandon, the carrot cake was lifted from its gloomy appearance in the 1960s with the popularisation of cream cheese frosting – a decidedly American twist that took the classic carrot cake from earthy to decadent, and to the phenomenon we know today. 8

Victoria sponge Sometimes also referred to as a victoria sandwich, this legendary sponge cake ranks high on the list of every self-respecting cake lover in Britain. Named after Queen Victoria, the sponge came to prominence with the rise of afternoon tea in the 19th century, as bourgeois and aristocratic lunchers turned to delicate sandwiches and thick wedges of cake as something to chat over with one another. The victoria sponge is perhaps the most British of cakes – a timeless classic and a crowd-pleaser that never fails to delight.

Madeira cake

Named after the Portuguese island of Madeira and the cloyingly sweet dessert wine it produces, madeira cake was designed to be the perfect accompaniment for a tipple, but Britons – perhaps not wanting to drink dessert wine all the time – found a way to bring it into their everyday diet.

Recipes for madeira cake have been passed around since the 18th century, but its true popularity came with Eliza Acton – the godmother of English cookery – publishing her version in her legendary cookbook, Modern Cookery for Private Families (1845).

Sticky toffee pudding

Surprisingly, the sticky toffee pudding is not some overhang from Elizabethan Britain, but was instead invented by a Mr Francis Coulson of Sharrow Bay, a hotel in the Lake District, in the 1970s. This saccharine sponge, often strewn with sweet chopped dates and baked in golden syrup, is said to The oldest printed recipe of this have been inspired by a recipe for an quintessentially Scottish biscuit came in 1736 american muffin, and has become over a from Mrs McLintock’s Recipes for Cookery very short space of time one of Britain’s and Pastry-Work – one of Britain’s earliest most beloved desserts. New booking system for recycling centres

Brislington Green Trail: We were delighted to join local residents at Arnos Court Park this week, to make a short video with Bristol City Council about the origins of the Brislington Green Trail and how the scheme benefitted from Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding. This year, we have several applications for CIL funding and Greater Brislington Together will hopefully be organising a public meeting in the next few weeks, when we can find out more about the bids and select our community priorities. You can find out more about the Brislington Green Trail here: https://greaterbrislington.org/greentrail/ New café concession at Arnos Court Park: We are delighted to see the new café concession up and running at Arnos Court Park. The current operators have a contract to trade until 31 October. This is a trial pitch and there will be a consultation in about a month’s time. All being well, the council will offer an extension through the winter with a view to advertising the pitch for a three year contract from April 2023. 10

New booking system for recycling centres: From 6 June, you’ll need to make a reservation to visit the city’s recycling centres and the booking system is now open. You can book up to two weeks in advance, or one hour before you visit if slots are available. People without access to the internet can call 0117 922 2100 Monday to Friday between 8.30am to 6pm (closed 12 1.30pm on Wednesday). We are concerned that the new system may discourage people from recycling, so please let us know if you have any issues with it. More details HERE New housing development: You may be aware that Sovereign Housing Association recently acquired a large area of riverside land in Brislington West; it’s the site currently occupied by City Motors on St Phillip’s Causeway. We will be meeting with them shortly to find out more about their plans for the site and they will be commencing consultations with local residents, community groups and businesses very soon. We will keep you posted as their plans develop.

New street lighting:

Tel: 0117 322 6005 www.protenservices.co.uk

Across the city, council teams have been installing new LED lanterns. However, in some roads the lanterns don’t quite illuminate the surrounding area as well as the previous lights did. We have received a small number of complaints, including one elderly resident who felt less safe in the evening due to the lower level of lighting. We are pleased to say the council has installed more powerful LED varieties in response, which should hopefully lead to the road being at a higher light level. If you notice a problem on your road, get in touch and we will let the council know. Hundreds of Brislington West residents have signed up to receive our monthly newsletter via email. I’m a bit of a cafe aficionado, so after living here all my life years here, it’s about time I wrote a guide to the best cafes in Bristol.

5

So here’s my guide to the best independent Bristol coffee shops and cafes. Now there are so many great ones to choose from in Bristol, so even this top 5 doesn’t do the sheer amount of great indepedant coffee shops that is in this great city we live in.

Boston Tea Party

Boston Tea Party is a Bristol born and bred institution that now has cafes all across the city and west country. It has a big focus on sustainability and was one of the first UK cafes to stop using single use cups. It also has a great family-friendly menu with big breakfasts, burgers and cakes. The halloumi and sweetcorn fritters are a particular favourite. And they also have a great pick-and-mix kid’s breakfast menu.

Tin Can

Tin Can Coffee started as a festival truck and now has two shops in Bristol – one in Southville and the other on Gloucester Road. They have a cool aesthetic with nods to their trucking past. And they take their coffee seriously, serving their own house blend as well as single origin specials. The cakes and brunch are good too. 16

Best Cafes in Bristol

Small Street Espresso Small Street Espresso rightfully has a reputation for serving some of Bristol’s best coffee. They do local coffee as well as specialist varieties from across the world. And the cakes are also top notch. It’s the sister venue of Little Victories above.

Playground Cafe Playground Cafe is instantly memorable for its swing seats you can see from the window. As the name would suggest, it has a playful vibe throughout and there are over 150 boardgames to get involved with. They serve craft beer and cocktails as well as coffee. Chance and Counters is another good Bristol play café in the centre of town.

Ruby Jeans The Parade There is no better place for a coffee and slice of cake than Ruby Jeans The Parade in Shirehampton with it’s quiz nights and dog friendly atmosphere. The fantastic Sunday Roast that’s served every Sunday are scrumptious. Also the delicious and fresh variety of cakes and sandwiches are gluten free and vegan friendly too. A must visit if you’re in the area.

Home Improvement tips

Laminate Flooring In Five Steps! Laminate is attractive for a few reasons. It is just a good tight floor that requires minimal maintenance. Laminate flooring is normally durable and in comparison with other types of flooring not costly. If you're following theses steps carefully, it is possible to setup any flooring straight away on your own. A fairly nice activity job for two individuals to undertake. What do I need? - Laminate - Underfloor + joining tape - Skirtings - Mitre Saw / Jig Saw - Tapeline - Hammer - Spacers - Pencil - Square Step 1 Prepare everything you have obtained for the project to start out. The ground where one must place the laminate ought to be completely flat and free of dirt and dust. Step 2 Then you may start with the actual sub floor. This is basically the sound, humidity and heat insulation. There are numerous types of flooring on the market. Make sure when choosing your sub floor to select the one that fits your floor the best. When rolling out the sub floor. Simply place the underlay along with joining tape together. 18

Step 3 Now you can begin at one corner, between the walls and the laminate place spacers an 8mm apart around the room between the wall and the laminate. This help the laminate to expand against the wall in hot and cold climates. First, place a whole sheet of flooring. After that you can work the room. Hold the plank in a angle of about forty-five degrees and tap the boards together using a rubber hammer and off cut of laminate to ensure you don’t ruin the tung or grove of the next board. I recommend using a dremel tool to cut out spaces under skirting that is surrounding doors to get a seamless finish if your leaving the original skirting in place Step 4 When the laminate is completed , you may start the skirting to hide the 8mm. You can find a variety of skirting for sale at places like B and Q. The simplest to use is the bull nosed variety. This can be a good choice seeing as there are absolutely no fancy edges to cut. Cut the skirting boards inside a corner with a miter saw at forty-five degrees. This way you will get good, tight edges. Step 5 Your floor is ready! Thoroughly clean the surface with a lightweight. Wet cloth. Not too wet, because laminate are not able to endure that. Be careful while positioning the furniture. Putting them on laminate (specially with the cheaper ones) can quickly get them scratched. The best you can do is ensure the bottom part of the legs is properly flat.

TIME AND MONEY SAVING TIPS FOR LANDLORDS Being a self-managing landlord is really hard work and never more so than right now. There are 178 pieces of legislation, regulations, and compliance in the private rental sector and, as a landlord, you are expected to know all about them and implement them, as applicable. We know lots of self-managing landlords and they take on the management of their properties for a variety of reasons – some manage because they are portfolio builders who haven’t reached the point of taking on an agent just yet; some have had bad experiences with agents and some like to be hands on, at the coal face and manage themselves. Whatever the reason, one thing is for sure, they all work extremely hard, know how to juggle and are usually “on call” 24 hours a day – it’s a very hard job, it’s time consuming and you need to have a long list of skill sets!

Whenever you do something, for the first time, document it and create a template. That way, the next time you come to do it, you won’t be wasting valuable time thinking “how did I do that?” Or “what wording did I use for that?” Think and learn the procedure once and then template it, so that you can rinse and repeat for the next occasion, saving yourself valuable time and minimising mistakes. What can be templated?

Templates don’t just have to be documents, they can be letters, emails, procedures and even shortcuts on your phone, replies to texts, WhatsApp messages and for communicating on your favourite platforms like Spare Room etc. You don’t have to waste time thinking “what did I say/do last time?” If it’s templated, then it’s there, whenever you need it and it’s consistent. It also means that So, in honour of all the self-managing landif, for some reason, you are not available, lords out there, this one is for you! Here are some top tips to help make life a little easier then someone else can communicate your and, hopefully, simpler. We have put together procedures, using “your voice” in any communications with your tenants, your team our 5 top tips for you – but remember this is or any other interested parties. not an exhaustive list and there are lots of things that you can do to maximise your Do regular inspections rentals and minimise your voids – also, our door is always open if you decide that you’d Not doing regular inspections, because you’re like an agent who will work alongside you to “too busy” is a false economy of time. protect both you and your asset and, help maximise your portfolio. We hear, time and time again from landlords, that they “just don’t have time…” to do Here are our top 5 tips: inspections or that they” …have a great relationship with their tenants” and a myriad Templates of other justifications. This is very short-sighted because the protection of your Documenting standard procedures saves biggest asset should never ever be left huge amounts of time. to chance or a “gut feeling” and because inspections are your opportunity to catch any issues, and sort them, before they become a 20 bigger problem.

The phrase “a stitch in time saves nine” was made for property inspections – have a checklist, have a procedure and you will be “in and out” in no time and it will save you no end of time and hassle! Pictures and videos of issues Getting tenants to send pictures and videos can save so much time! It’s hard not to have that “sinking feeling” when you get a message from a tenant that something is amiss; especially when you are a self-managing landlord, because this usually means that you will be the one jump ing in the car to go and assess the damage! We find that asking tenants to send a picture or, even better, a video of the problem, helps tremendously. Often it is something that you can talk them through over the phone or via whatever platform you use for communication. If action is required, then you will not be in the dark and can make an informed decision as to whether you need to visit the property or can call your maintenance team direct, thereby dispensing with unnecessary journeys.

This is also especially good for appliance and boiler breakdowns, as tenants can provide details of make, model and serial numbers, so that you have all the information to hand when calling breakdown companies. The bonus, also, here is that it gets tenants into the habit of taking responsibility for their home, which is in the interest of both parties. Qualify applicants Its impossible to overstate the importance of tenant selection. Tenant selection is more important than ever and if you are a self-managing landlord, then you will find that this takes up large chunks of your time. Where do you find your tenants and how do you conduct viewings? Do you have a pre-selection process and, if so, how stringent is it? The answers to these questions will determine just how much time you spend doing viewings and how much of that time could be saved if you had a solid pre-viewings qualification procedure in place. Keep detailed notes The importance of detailed note-keeping, about every property. There is really nothing worse than being in a stressful situation and not having the right information to hand. With a property, this stressful situation could mean fire, flood, gas leak or a whole number of other dramatic and highly charged situations – but you don’t need to turn a drama into a crisis! Keeping detailed notes, about every property in your portfolio is invaluable. Things like the location of the stop cock, gas meter, gas shut off valve and consumer unit and information about broadband passwords, make and model of the boiler, white goods and even things like paint colours (especially of any feature walls). 21

What to know about walking for weight loss Regular walking offers many potential health benefits, including weight loss. It is also one of the easiest and most cost effective forms of exercise a person can do. Many people can walk regularly and reap the benefits of being more active.

One study concluded that individuals who walked at 2.5 miles per hour (mph) on a flat surface while wearing a weighted vest that weighed 15% of their weight, burned 12% more calories than a person who did not wear a vest.

Although any increase in activity level will bring benefits, there are some things a person can do to increase the amount of fat they burn while walking. Tips include:

A person wearing a weighted vest that represented 10% of their body weight and who walked at the same pace on a 5-10% gradient burned an average of 13% more calories.

Picking up the pace

Wearing a weighted vest Adding extra weight to a workout will burn more calories. Heavier people burn more calories because their bodies require more energy to perform the same task than someone who is not as heavy; wearing a weighted vest while walking encourages a person’s body to work harder during a walk. 26

A person should aim to walk up hills, stairs, or inclines two to three times a week.

Focusing on form and posture

Some exercises to try include:

This technique can help a person build strength and keep them injury free so that they can continue their walking program.

Incorporating resistance training intervals Adding resistance training, such as tricep dips, can make walks more beneficial. To help burn more calories and increase the growth of new muscle, a person can try adding in resistance training during their walk.

Doing three shorter walks a day Though long walks are good, shorter, more frequent walks can also provide benefits. Some people may find it easier to maintain their daily exercise by doing shorter walks throughout the day instead of taking a much longer walk once a day. Experts believe that taking a walk after each meal also brings benefits. According to one study on inactive people over 60 years old, walking for 15 minutes three times a day after meals can help control blood sugar levels better than walking once a day for 45 minutes.

Your Garden In June Come June, its pretty safe to say that the risk of frost is behind us – summer is on its way and it’s time to make sure the garden is in good shape for the summer months. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the garden is bursting into life. This makes June a particularly busy month for the green-fingered among us with lots of planting, pruning, maintenance and weeding to do done. All our hard work is sure to be worth the effort though as we sit back and admire the onset of summer in our garden.

The essential gardening jobs for June Plant baskets and containers Now the risk of morning frost has passed, its time to plant up your containers, hanging baskets and planters. If you already had them growing in the greenhouse, or hardening off outside during the day, then It’s now safe to move them out to their summer position – choosing a sunny spot will ensure you get the best from them. Trim any excess growth to maintain shape and deadhead regularly to encourage flower growth. Water at least once a day or more frequently when it’s hot dry and windy. Regular feeding – once per week in the summer – will also help your plants to thrive.

Mow lawns once a week The lawn will be growing fast now and will continue to do so throughout the summer, so a good weekly cut is essential to keep it looking neat and tidy. To make sure your lawn looks its best for summer, apply a spring fertiliser onto established lawns now.

36

A good feed and a regular close cut will encourage extra growth making your lawn thick and lush. Don’t forget to reduce cutting frequency and raise mower blades if we have a drought.

Care for your roses June is traditionally the month when roses are at their peak. You will need to keep an eye out for black spots and aphid attacks. Both of these will need treating immediately to ensure that too much damage doesn’t occur. Black spot is a serious disease for roses caused by a fungus which infects the leaves and reduces plant vigour, and should be treated at first sign of infection with a fungicide. Green fly are sap-sucking creatures that can alter the growth of roses, also decreasing their vigour. Treat roses that are being attacked by aphids with an insecticide.

Plant of the month: Rose Why should you plant them? Roses suit all kinds of gardens –they come in huge variety of colours, shapes and scents. They can be grown in beds, borders and containers and can be grown up walls, fences and trellis.

How should you plant them? Roses grown in containers can be planted all year round – check the label when buying though as their preferred spot and conditions will vary depending on the type. Dig a hole roughly twice the size of the root ball to a spade’s depth, dig in a good quality compost and fork in a general fertiliser. Plant the rose to the same depth as it was in the container, firm down and water well. Apply a rose fertiliser every spring for amazing displays of colour.

Deadhead any faded rose blooms to encourage fresh buds to grow and apply a rose fertiliser after the first flowering.
