CASA JUNCOSA

One of the building’s most notable charms is the archshaped entrance door with two wooden leaves. Passing through this majestic door is like discovering a jewel of modernism that hides true works of art, which shine again after the recent restoration.

The ground floor, entirely made of Montjuïc stone, opens to the street through five doorways. The central doorway, which serves as the main entrance to the building, is defined by a trilateral arch with a tracery medallion containing a shield inscribed with ‘EJ.’ Floral decorations are present on all the architectural elements.

The entrance hall is an explosion of modernism in itself. It welcomes us with a natural stone mosaic floor with floral motifs, a stained glass window illuminated by an interior patio, and beautiful ceilings with rich moldings. From here, the bay window—spectacular from the outside—with its five trilateral arched windows and ornamental garlands on the sill, becomes even more impressive.

A perfect location in the heart of Barcelona: the Golden Square (Quadrat d’Or) of the Eixample. Between the streets ‘Carrer de Valencia’ and ‘Carrer de Mallorca’

The most notable architectural elements of Casa Juncosa are the main floor gallery, a large central tribune and four balconies carved in stone with plant motifs and also chocolate pots alluding to the product, origin of the family’s fortune.

Bright, ample natural light, open spaces with balconies, and beautiful modernist structure with ornamental ceilings, floors, and hallways.

Casa Juncosa is a modernist masterpiece in the Culture and Architecture of Barcelona, built between 1907 and 1909 commissioned by the merchant Evaristo Juncosa i Domènech to the architect Salvador Vinyals.

Evaristo was the son of Pedro Juncosa. He was the third generation of chocolate manufacturers, a business founded by his grandfather. On February 19, 1890, Evaristo acquired a plot of land on Rambla de Catalunya, between the streets ‘Carrer de Valencia and Mallorca’. However, it wasn’t until 1907 that he submitted an application to the Barcelona City Council to construct a building. The proposal included a basement, warehouses on the ground floor, four floors—the first with a single dwelling and the rest with two—and a walkable rooftop terrace.

Inspired by Antonio Gaudí’s Casa Calvet, it forms part of Barcelona’s Architectural Heritage. The facade is a totally symmetrical building made of stone and decorated with sculpted plant motifs. This building represents the artistic beauty of Catalan modernism.

Over the years Casa Juncosa has evolved into a living part of Barcelona’s history that allows us to understand what the luxurious and exclusive noble residences of the Catalan bourgeoisie of the early 20th century were like.

Today Casa Juncosa perfectly integrates into an environment where architecture, art, fashion, gastronomy, cultural life, and neighborhood life coexist in harmony.
