Durability
When the racks were tested recently they were loaded with a 30kg weight (recommended weight is 25kg) and were subjected to 50,000 oscillations. The rack showed no signs of wear on what was the equivalent of at least a lifetime of use. Gaz - falling down...
It’s nice to be good at something. At least just one thing. The lads think I’m good at one stunt … the Superman Ground Grab. I’ve made it my trademark move on the MTB. But I think I’m just lucky. The DW 100 at St Albans brought up a couple of comments that still make me giggle. First was Sean telling me “I’m following your line: Please make it a good one”. We were traversing the edge of some stoney goodness just waiting to gobble up an incorrectly placed front wheel. We got through and went on our merry way. The second was an unknown rider passing me while I was eating, who said “I shouldn’t have followed your line into Shepherds Gully”. I turn to see a graze from elbow to wrist, and his bum hanging out of his knicks. I don’t know how I managed to survive blasting down through the top section of Shepherds Gully. Had a hand come off the bars through there – ever tried one handed, bouncing over rocks? No? I suggest you leave it for someone else to do. What has that got to do with my opening comments? Not much. Except any day out on a bike, regardless of what happens, is surely better than anything else. Well, maybe my wife’s cake would be better … she really does bake an excellent wattle seed & vanilla cake …
Matt: old school touring vs new wave touring... As an “old school” cycle tourist from an “adventure touring” 26” inch wheel background, I was interested in adding a more modern ride to my collection. Something with manners more suited to road/dirt road specific riding. A “new wave” touring bike. (something with all the new fangled bells and whistles...)
With the new Vaya from Salsa I have found this bike. For starters a double butted framset and the right geometry are a must have for any loaded touring bike. Plus multiple fittings for bottles, racks and fenders. The wheelset are 29” DT swiss X470 rims on the larger sizes and 26” X430 on the smaller frame sizes are a nice touch. My personal choice up to now has been towards the 26” wheels for longer self supported trips. Due mainly to the availability of 26” tyres in more remote areas. However, with the growing number of 29er/700c tryes available for touring I’ve been swayed to give the big wheels a go. The complete bike comes with a a great mix of a Shimano drivetrain and Avid BB7 brakes, (that should hold up to what I’m going to throw at them). Having said that, the opportunity to build a dream bike, with my own selection of components, starting fresh with a blank frame/fork is very tempting. Had I been looking to push the explorations futher off road, the trailready Fargo would be a great option. Waiting to take me wherever I was willing to venture. Either way, the new range from Salsa answers all my touring questions.

Vaya The Vaya is our road adventure bike, designed to take on any surface that someone might consider a ‘road’. Crafted of Salsa Classico CroMoly, the Vaya is loaded with braze-on’s for fenders, racks, and lowriders. This makes everything from wet weather commutes to full-on touring a breeze.
Stable geometry keeps the bike from being twitchy, and makes the bike a pleasure to ride while loaded. Our two smallest Vaya sizes use 26” wheels to provide better fit, improved standover clearance, and to eliminate toe overlap. The larger Vaya sizes use 700c wheels. Enjoy a long day in the saddle.
