Events
At Dirt Works we like to get involved in the sport that we love so much. We not only sponsor riders and events, but give back to the sport by being a member of the Cycling Promotion Fund. Most of all, we all love riding and get involved in activities that promote the sport of cycling, such as the National Ride to Work Day. Dirt Works 100km Classic The Dirt Works 100km Classic is NSW’s oldest 100km event. Following the historic Convict Trail through the Dharug and Yengo National Parks to the north west of Sydney, the Dirt Works 100km Classic is one of Australian mountain biking’s iconic events. In 2010 this race gets a new twist. For the first time Victorians get their own Dirt Works 100km Classic! Staged on some of Victoria’s finest singletrack in Wombat State Forest, near the town of Woodend, the Dirt Works 100km Classic Melbourne promises a great day out on the bike and is sure to sell out. The Highland Fling, Australia’s MTB Marathon Championship, is a mountain bike marathon for all. It offers a scenic and challenging route through forests and farmland in the Southern Highlands of NSW, hammering singletrack, forest tracks, dirt road and less than 2km of blacktop.
The Simpson Desert Bike Challenge is a 590klm ride across some of the most bicycle unfriendly, human being inhospitable terrain on earth. For some, the Simpson Desert (or “Satan’s Velodrome” as many riders call it) can be hell. Yet they return, again and again, from throughout Australia and across the world for five days of the year when the desert plays host to this extraordinary cycling event www.desertchallenge.org

Dirt Works Australia is proud to be a member of CPF (Cycling Promotion Fund), which was established in 2000 to enable the bicycle industry to play an active role in promoting and encouraging cycling, and in working to improve conditions for bicycle riders. The CPF is an initiative of Bicycle Industries Australia Ltd., the national membership association for wholesalers, manufacturers and importers. Membership of the CPF is voluntary and since its inception membership has been increasing consistently. Since its formation the CPF has invested more than $600,000 into advancing cycling in Australia.
Sydney Spring Cycle The City of Sydney Spring Cycle is Sydney’s most popular annual recreational cycling event where thousands of cyclists of all ages and abilities join together to enjoy a Sunday cycle through some of the most picturesque surroundings of the city. You can enjoy a fun bike ride while raising money for MS Australia and the Oncology Children’s Foundation – the event
Imagine a week of mountain biking, a week of racing, that will take you from the highest mountains in Australia, across snowgum lined plains, down along rainforest lined creeks and out to finish with your wheels in the sand and surf. National Ride To Work Day Dirt Works Australia is proud to be part of Australia’s biggest active workplace event in October each year. Nearly all Dirt Works staff joined in the fun, rewarded by a slap-up BBQ for their efforts. Some of the staff had never ridden a bike to work… And two staff rode the Dirt Works tandem, whilst others rode a mix of road, touring, singlespeed, and mountain bikes. With registered riders numbering approx. 30,000 from 3,000 registered workplaces, this event is your opportunity to have a real impact on global warming and reap the health benefits of getting active.
Sydney Spring Fat Tire Festival The Sydney Spring Fat Tyre Festival is a one day mountain bike race held at Ourimbah State Forest, approximately 100km north from the heart of the Sydney CBD. The Ourimbah trails go down smooth as a post ride pizza, and this event has a fun and laid back vibe. Always a sell out, the Sydney Spring Fat Tire Festival is an event to mark on your calendar. Mont 24 Hour Melrose Fat Tire Festival A Fest of Singletrack, Margueritas, Tattoed Amazonians, Sister City Fruita CO folk and Utah friends, fraternizing with some bemused local kangaroos in the green hills of Melrose. An international celebration of rolling smoothly through a paradise of eucalyptus scented trails neatly finished with the richest shiraz. All that is good about Sparrow Hill is on offer again for 2010, on the weekend of 27th-28th of March. The MONT is a classic weekend of mountain biking, and a must-do event for first timers and hard core mountain bikers alike. Fly around Sparrow’s brilliantly flowing single track with a smile on your dial; while there’s plenty of racing to be had, the MONT is also a pretty laid back event, so if you don’t take your performances too seriously, rest assured you won’t be alone. First and foremost our hubs and spokes are 100% made in our Asheville , NC facility. We outsource bearings…that’s it. Design, manufacturing, quality control and sales are all done in house where we can keep close tabs on tolerances and quality. In a time where the bike industry is constantly moving production overseas to increase margins, we firmly believe in keeping our production in house. Aesthetics & Customization
Our spoke design allows us to eliminate the J-bend and the spoke/nipple interface. Instead our spokes thread directly into the hub shell with a larger diameter thread than the main spoke body, eliminating weakness at the thread. This allowed us to increase the surface contact area by more than 200% over a standard 14g spoke and nipple combination. We also applied this same theory to our one-piece axle assemblies, less interfaces means more durable parts. Another notable feature concerning precision is our engagement mechanisms. Our patent pending mechanism offers a 3-degree engagement, far less drag than the competition and the ability to withstand over 700 ft lbs of torque!
We set out to manufacture the most well thought out and functional wheels on the market. With that goal attained we worked tirelessly to achieve their aesthetic beauty. From the edgy design of the hubshell to the custom colour options to the limitless rim choices we ensure that your wheels will look as good as they perform. We are also able to do custom colour hub and spoke combinations, alternating colours, etc. If you can dream it and your wallet can handle it, we can do it.
These wheels were born and raised in the temperate rain forest conditions of the Blue Ridge Mountains . Needless to say, we tried a lot of different bearings to find something to hold up to our wet conditions finally deciding on ABEC 5 grade Japanese bearings due to their superior seals and durability. It would be shameful to suspend such high-end components on anything else.

Lightweight While our one piece 7075-T6 spokes have similar tensile strength as 14g stainless spokes, they weigh about the same as a triple butted spoke. The aluminium construction offers significantly improved lateral stiffness over any butted spoke. Also by eliminating the nipple we reduce rotational mass at the rim. The Hive Established in 2008, The Hive is committed to improving cyclists experience through the relentless application of engineering and design principles. Based in Petaluma, California, The Hive also has offices in San Luis Obispo, California and Taichung Taiwan. Fifteen G cranks The FifteenG crankset uses a novel combination of features to provide a class leading value in a lightweight cross country/all mountain crankset. Total weight with bottom bracket: 802 gm. Forged and CNC machined arms are attached to a 30mm aluminum spindle using a proprietary polygon interface. The cranks spin on an oversized external bottom bracket bearing system, including an integrated non-contact shield.

The 1.3 leverage ratio is appropriate for Dura-Ace™ 7800 and prior, Campagnolo™, and SRAM™ products. 1.4 is for Dura Ace™ 7900, and UltegraSL™/6700. It rolls on sealed cartridge bearings and employs an alloy 15mm thru axle, bolted to the frame by custom Titanium M10 bolts. This is where PUSH comes in. PUSH makes tuning and upgrade parts for your suspension. We can modify your suspension to make it perform the best it possibly can for your bike with you riding it on your favourite trails.
The Process Starts… Take your bike to your shop and tell them you want your suspension PUSHed. They will fill in a form with all the details we need and send it to us with your fork or shock. Unsure about the details? Need some help in figuring out exactly what you need? We will tune your suspension to suit you and then check this with our computerised shock dyno. We then send it all back to your shop. The only thing left after that is for you to hit that rock garden faster than you ever have before.
The Nitty-gritty… PUSH replace the damper piston and re-valve the shock using PUSH multi-phase compression and rebound valving. This will give you maximum small bump sensitivity while still being able to control the bigger hits. They may also modify your shock adjuster dials to give the best performance for your needs. If it’s a DHX they will fit a PUSH Exclusive Factory Conical Bottoming Bumper in the correct density for increased bottoming control. PUSH is constantly testing and developing their products to ensure that what you ride is performing at the best it possibly can.
Can my gear be PUSHed? While not all makes and models of suspension can be PUSHed yet, the engineers at PUSH are constantly developing new products. Cable Donutz We call them “High-Tech Cable Donutz,” and yes, we realize that sounds a bit ridiculous. After all, how high-tech can a simple rubber donut be? Maybe a better name would have been “BorderlineNeurotically-Analyzed and Obsessed-Over Cable Donutz,” but that doesn’t fit very well on a label - particularly on a small package. Wheelcraft builds so many wheels with Sun and NoTubes rims it’s incredible. These rim ranges span so many disciplines of MTB riding that it is hard to pick a few favourite wheels to let you choose from. For this reason, we are introducing our new ‘semi-custom’ wheels to give you ultimate choice whilst avoiding confusion. The heart of the semi-custom wheel range is the new Dice Shuffle hub set. These hubs are super-versatile, and will fit just about any frame and fork combination imaginable. By using the Shuffle hubs exclusively in our semi-custom wheels we know that whatever wheel you choose, it will be compatible with your bike. Next is the spokes. In our experience the best value for money spoke available is undoubtedly the DT Swiss Competition. It’s butted ends and thinner middle section make it strong enough for any application, but also acceptably light for the gram conscious amongst us, and at a very reasonable price. We always thread DT Prolock brass nipples onto the end of these spokes for years of maintenance free riding.

The final piece of the puzzle is the rim, and this is where you must decide. Check the Sun Equalizer and MTX rim ranges on page 54 and the NoTubes rim range on page 41. There are a lot of rims to choose from, so read up and find the rim most suited to your riding. As a general guide Sun Equalizer rims are for riders that want a reliable rim that is still lightweight. Your bicycle retailer will fill in one of these forms. When we receive the completed form, we’ll check that everything is compatible (e.g. no DT Swiss 190 hubs radially laced to Intense Mag rims with Revolution spokes), and flick it over to our experienced wheelbuilder.
We will lovingly caress your chosen components into a finished wheel, and ship it within a few days of ordering, depending on how busy it gets. Don’t worry, our wheelbuilder has unrestricted access to freshly roasted coffee to ensure his work rate remains at peak levels..
Crafted Engineering
Precision handbuilding combined with Holland Mechanics machine assistance, produces wheels built to the highest technical standards, with consistent, repeatable quality all the way down the line. Each wheel we produce goes through a painstaking and rigorous process of assembly, tensioning, truing, finishing, checking and documentation.
The wheel then goes onto a truing stand for hand-truing with a difference. Our Holland Mechanics truing stand has a computer interface. An optical sensor tracks spoke position, so that we can identify every spoke as it comes up for tensioning. A mechanical sensor rolls against the rim surface, reading the roundness and side-to-side trueness of the rim to a precision level of one-ďŹ ftieth of a millimetre.
Spokes are initially hand-laced to a hub by our experienced and ever-patient wheelbuilder.
This information is continuously displayed on the monitor, which eliminates subjective eyeballing while vastly decreasing truing time. Once the wheel has been handtrued to within our exacting tolerances (0.25mm or less in any direction), spoke tension is measured with our DT Swiss Digital Tensio, and the spokes are manually stressrelieved for fatigue resistance.
The wheel then goes back in the truing stand for rechecking. We record and ďŹ le the data for every Wheelcraft wheel to ensure consistent quality is maintained. The last step is to assign each wheel, or pair of wheels, a unique and traceable serial number. Our combination of hand building and machine assistance speeds up the wheel building process, saving you money while delivering handbuilt precision and reliability. The bonus is a level of consistency that would be impossible to achieve with human hands alone, assuring a quality build every time.
Our Holland Mechanics lacing machine is uniquely programmed for every single hub, rim and lacing combination that we use. It holds the rim and winds spoke nipples onto the spokes, each with an identical number of turns. From then it takes a minute before a wheel is produced: one that is tighter and truer than most machine-built wheels that you see on bicycles, and one that would give most wheel builders a run for their money. But that is only the ďŹ rst stage.

The Solution Tyre Sealant Stan’s Tire Sealant is a very thin, low viscosity liquid that coats the inside of the tire and carries with it specially formulated sealing crystals. The thin coating is able to seal small punctures instantly while the larger crystals work to fill major punctures. Stan’s Tire Sealant will stay liquid in a mountain bike tire with a thin casing for two to seven months on average. Just two ounces of Stan’s Tire Sealant in a converted standard tire or a tubeless tire can repair up to a 1/4” hole instantly. Absolute+
Absolute+ is a platform-style damper. This means that the fork can be set to remain rigid until a certain impact threshold is exceeded. The benefit is pedaling efficiency. As proponents of rigid forks will attest, suspension has the potential to diminish pedaling efficiency by compressing the fork rather than propelling the bike forward. In the open position, the Absolute damper acts much like TPC, absorbing even slight impacts. By introducing a bit of damping platform, a rider can get the benefit of suspension without the penalty of wasted energy. In the second and third positions, the Absolute damper resists pedal bob and brake dive on smooth terrain, yet still allows the fork to move through its travel over most bumps. In the fourth and fifth positions, the fork remains rigid during most out-of-the-saddle sprints or climbs, at the expense of some harshness over washboard and rooty trails. In the sixth position, the Absolute damper locks out the suspension for everything but a major, abrupt impact, like suddenly running into a rock or log. Forks equipped with the Absolute damper have a platform adjustment dial on the top of the right leg and a rebound adjustment dial on the bottom of the right leg.

Vaya What is the Vaya? (pronounced V-Eye-Ah….Think “eye” with a “V” at the beginning and an “ahh” at the end). Vaya is a new model. We call it Salsa’s road adventure bike. It is intended to represent how people are using our current La Cruz cross bike and represents Salsa’s take on the do it all road based bike. By “road” I mean paved and smooth gravel. It includes our Fargo drops as well as disc brake mounts on the chain stay, thus allowing easier rack and fender mounting. Clearance for 43c tires, it’s available as a frameset or a complete bike. Handy Hubs Endomorph 3.7" Tyre Designed for soft and loose conditions. Its 3.7" width and modest paddle-like tread allow it to float, rather than dig. With a 74cm (29") diameter, the Endomorph’s huge footprint gives it superior performance in snow, sand and mud. 12psi is a good all-round pressure. But for maximum traction when trail conditions are at their worst, the high-volume casing allows you to run pressures down to 5psi.
Surly hubs are made from forged aluminium and have medium height flanges. They spin on high load, well sealed, adjustable cartridge bearings. You can adjust play, as the bearings wear, so bearings are replaced less often. All non-disc hubs have a solid, nutted axle and the disc hubs have either solid or quick-release versions.
Larry 3.8” tyre Larry is the next big thing, well at least if you’re talking about tires larger than three and a half inches wide. The Endomorph’s tread was specifically designed for soft conditions such as packed snow and sand. Larry’s tread is a bit different. The low chevron ribs are still there, but they connect longer, dagger shaped knobs. The knobs are all the same height, so as they wrap around the casing the result is a more rounded profile compared to the Endomorph. All this results in greater steering control in loose and soft conditions and on firmer ground. Larry is a great front tire to Endomorph’s rear, and a good all around tire for your Pugsley.

Big Block complete bike One of most exciting phases of the Big Block project was putting together the complete bike spec. Of course we’re going to use our hubs and cranks. Others were not that simple, headset, rims, tires, etc. Let’s start with the cockpit: black 30mm riser bar mated to a quality four bolt alloy stem. We’ve spec’d a super nice Cane Creek S3 headset which will provide years of maintenance free smoothness. You’re also getting a matching set of front and rear brakes, the levers being hinged for easy on and off. For your sitting pleasure we’ve spec’d a sleek and comfy saddle and for pedalling you’ll find our own All-City 612 Track Crankset complete with 46tooth AC chainring. The cog in back is a 17 tooth, and the package is finished off with a silver KMC chain. The wheelset features our own 32 hole Standard hubs (fixed/free), laced via DT Swiss Champion black spokes and DT silver brass nipples, to non-machined Alex R450s. Completing the wheel package are a pair of one of our all time favorite tires, the venerable Vittoria Zaffiro in a 700X25c street friendly configuration. In short, we’ve built this bike as we would want to own and ride it.

612 Track Crank The 612 Track Crank is an extremely stiff and strong 144BCD track crank. The 612 is cold forged instead of melt forged, allowing for a better grain structure in the metal and producing a stronger and more durable part. It utilizes the classic JIS square taper spindle and comes with a color matched 46 tooth 1/8th chainring.
612 track rings are the perfect compliment to any 144BCD crankset. They are made from 7000 series aluminium and feature a durable and lovely anodized finish. We are making them in popular and not so popular sizes that we hope to popularize. Ever ride a 42X16? I do and can tell you that it’s an awesome around town or freestyle gear, but until now 144BCD 42 tooth rings have been nigh impossible to find (believe me I’ve tried). Mojo Std When the Mojo Carbon debuted in 2005, it signified the rebirth of Ibis, a pioneer and icon of the mountain bike industry. Five years later, the Mojo is largely unchanged, yet the industry is still scrambling to provide an answer to its elegant yet commanding styling, and its incredible ability to glide over chatter and gobble-up square-edge hits. At 5.9 pounds, its chassis is built to handle everything from your favourite local trail to the Downieville Classic. It’s perhaps the one bike you need for your stable. The Mojo is 100% carbon fibre except for the dropouts, pivot mounts, and inserts at the bottom bracket and head tube. The composite frame sections are moulded as a monocoque to exploit the benefits of a refined layup schedule. With over 1800 hours of 3d design and FEA analysis, the Mojo came out of the moulds ready to tackle any trail -- just ask Brian Lopes. The one-piece carbon
Mojo SL The Ibis Mojo SL takes its cues from the popular Mojo, and drops a few grams as well. This bike is built in the same moulds as the Mojo, so the familiar shape and notable 140mm travel all-mountain geometry is all the same. However, there are a few distinct differences between the two that set the 5.3 pound Mojo SL apart and up to 295g (.65 lbs) lighter than the Mojo Carbon. The folks at Ibis have used the latest technologies to eliminate almost all of the alloy bits found in the original Mojo Carbon frame. In the SL version, the dropouts are compression moulded carbon fibre and are far lighter than their aluminium counterparts. The dropouts use stainless steel inserts to ensure durability. The head tube cups and seatpost insert are also carbon fibre. The actual composite layup is enhanced by the integration of higher modulus fibres, meaning less material can be used while maintaining the same strength and stiffness. Less material means less total weight. And, for the icing on the cake, steel pivot hardware has been replaced with lighter and stronger 6/4 titanium. The Mojo SL is 100% carbon fibre except for the inserts at the bottom bracket and linkage shaft bores. The composite frame sections are moulded as a monocoque to exploit the benefits of a refined layup schedule. The DW link....
With their hourglass lines and lush, vibrant finishes, the Mojo defines sexy, but without the credentials to back it up, it would just be another pretty bike. Ibis employs the dw-link to provide an optimum blend of suspension characteristics for an all-mountain bike. One of the most notable traits is its built in anti-squat. The position of the linkages creates resistance in the suspension to the rearward transfer of mass and subsequent compression (squat) of the rear end as you stomp the pedals and accelerate. This anti-squat transfers your pedal input into forward motion instead of “monkey motion.” According to Dave Weagle, the dw-link creator, the anti-squat properties built into the Mojo rear suspension allow the use of a more lightly damped shock. On the trail this translates into greater bump sensitivity, traction, and control in all trail situations whether accelerating or coasting. The Mojo has that “buttery smooth” feel of a coil spring without the weight penalty. With the dw-link, the chainstay length increase is minimal and occurs at a constant and smooth rate. Pedal feedback as the suspension cycles is nominal and doesn’t markedly change from the small to the big ring. We’ve found it to be a square-edge bump-eating machine.

Tranny The Tranny is moulded as a carbon fibre monocoque in two unique sections. The one piece front triangle looks fairly normal save for two spots -- the seatstay and chainstay junctions. These locations are designed to accept the rear triangle to produce the complete frame. At the seatstay junction, the wishbone is effectively bolted into a double shear bracket on the back of the seat tube and is shaped to allow a small degree of radial movement. This movement is essential for the bike to function as a single-speed. The junction behind the bottom bracket area is called the Slot Machine. As the name implies, there is a slot that allows the clamping hardware in the chainstays to have some fore and aft movement. This range of adjustment permits tensioning of the chain in single-speed applications, negating the need for an eccentric bottom bracket. Pull the Slot Machine all the way forward and you can run the Tranny geared with short chainstays for razor-like handling in tight trails. Toss the cassette and extra rings in the bin and run it as a single-speed with the Slot Machine pulled rearwards a bit, just enough to tension the chain. Are you flying somewhere for a mountain biking vacation? Just unbolt the whole enchilada and pack the thing away neatly in a suitcase and check it as regular baggage. The Tranny is available in four sizes – Small, Medium, Large, and XL and comes in Matte Clear (over naked carbon), Granny Smith Apple Green Metallic, and Copper Metallic. Mojo HD The Mojos are getting a big brother. For the last couple years, we’ve been taxing Dave Weagle’s brain (dw-link, Dave Weagle, get it?), and at the same time, smoke has been pouring out of our CAD machine and off the end of Roxy’s trusty #2 pencil. .
Not Your Father’s 160mm Bike

One of the things we’d like to stress is that while 160mm of travel might not seem like a big change from the Mojo, or enough for the huck demons out there, you’ve got to try it. 160mm of Ibis spec dw-link feels like a lot more. The spring curves and leverage rates we’ve spec’d along with Fox on their RP23 resulted in a bike that surprises people when they ride it. The HD feels bomber when you ride it, unless you’re riding it uphill, when it feels downright svelte. The 1.5 tapered steerer, our engineer Colin’s latest magical carbon layup, and the sum total many customers’ feedback being incorporated into the design of this frame—all these things combine to give the HD a very surprising feel. It’s built like a tank, but doesn’t ride like one.

Rear brake and rear deraileur run on the down tube, with hidden swingarm housing for the rear derailleur. Front derailleur (if you use one) and adjustible seatpost housing (if you use one) run along the top tube. Silk The Ibis Silk SL uses a layup of ultra high modulus carbon fibre which saves weight and increases strength. Carbon fibre headcups further reduce the weight, resulting in a 58cm frame weight of under 900g. That’s about two pounds total!
Ibis Silk Ultegra That new Ultegra is sweet and oh so lightweight too. Take a look at the rest of the kit, Ibis’ 3D Forged 7075 stem and post plus the super nice San Marco Zolcolan saddle. We’re liking the Easton Circuit wheels a lot (which is why we spec’d them).
Ibis Silk Dura-Ace Ibis Silk SL Dura-Ace. For high-end road, Dura-Ace is the king. Performance and reliability are legendary. The Easton EA90SLX wheels, EC90 SL CNT fork, 3T Ergonova bars and Easton EC90 Zero post work beautifully with Dura-Ace.
Hakkalügi The whole frame is built with pre-impregnated carbon fiber sheet, hand rolled around silicone forms, placed into a steel mold and baked until done. This unified structure assures that it is not only lighter than ever, but strong enough for serious ‘cross courses, jarring dirt roads, and trail rides. The patent pending Cylindrical Tube Technology used in the front triangle makes for excellent torsional stiffness and precise handling for those uphill-through-the-mud slogfests and snot-slicked off-camber corners. In an effort to reduce as much excess weight as possible, Ibis chose to use compression molded carbon for the dropouts and the seat tube insert is also 100% carbon. In fact, the aluminum headtube and bottom bracket inserts are the only non-carbon bits. The Ibis Hakkalügi is available in six sizes from 47cm-61cm and comes in one glorious color, Phlegmish Yellow. It requires the use of a 31.6mm seatpost and a 34.9mm band clamp bottom pull front derailleur. The fork has a 1-1/8” steerer tube and uses a Campagnolo style Hiddenset headset. 1100 grams (55 cm).
