Michael’s letter We started 2018 on a journey. The intended destination? A DIRTT with strong and profitable growth. The path started with a major budgeting initiative through a refreshed approach. A similar approach to what we all do for ourselves or our households.
As shareholders and Partners, we know when DIRTT is profitable, we all win. We want DIRTT to grow for decades to come. To be the lifeblood of our Partner’s businesses. And see the achievement of changing how the world builds.
We all create budgets connected to what’s important in our lives. Taking care of our families; making a car payment; that dream vacation; or sending kids to college. We set our financial goals and make plans for how to achieve them. Along the way, we make intentional decisions about how to spend and save our money. That’s the important part: being intentional.
We had help from a lot of DIRTTbags to draw the map. Over the last three months, your team has worked diligently to create a budget for 2018. I’d like to say a special thankyou to everyone who put time and effort into their part of the budgeting project. The DIRTT Board of Directors has now approved it. In the coming weeks, working budgets will be shared with everyone from the Executive Team.
The budgeting plan we make for ourselves is our road map. If we intend on making it to our destination, we’re going to need a map. And it will be useful to check that map from time to time to ensure we’re on course. Or, get back on the path if we’ve wandered off route.
The budget is designed to provide the right amount of money where it’s needed, but not more. DIRTTbags throughout every facet of the company were given responsibility for an area or initiative. Their job was to define their plan and tell us how much money would

be needed to accomplish it. We tried to look at each initiative in an open-minded way, asking questions like “is that the best approach to accomplish our objective?” and “when we did this last year, how well did it go?” Working together to create the budget got everyone on the same page. Every DIRTTbag who was involved created a plan for their area. Each budget component came together to create a whole. We matched the total budget to our expected sales to determine if we can achieve our profitability goals. This is just like what we do at home: making sure we don’t spend more than we take in. We want to give you the tools and visibility you need to stay on budget. A spending report will be given to teams each month so everyone can have eyes on where money is going. Foresee anything unusual coming up? Share your thoughts with your team lead so they can anticipate that variance and work with you to manage it. DIRTT is a great business. We’ve made a number of substantial commitments over the last few years to add to our capabilities. We’ve added people to DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | April 2018
various teams from operations to sales, ICE® and many others. We’ve built new manufacturing lines and added equipment and machinery. We’ve enhanced the experience at Green Learning Centers. And we’ve funded significant marketing and sale initiatives including the largest Connext event in our history last year. Those investments have given us the foundation we need for our next intention: profitable growth. DIRTT’s intention for 2018 is 13% to 15% adjusted EBITDA, which is a measure of profitability. In 2015, we achieved a 14% EBITDA with substantially lower sales. We know it’s a reasonable and achievable goal. We’ll hit our target with strong sales and DIRTT is on track for an excellent year. Budgets for each area will be our roadmaps. Compasses to keep us on course and get the job done as planned. We get the job done for our Clients every day. This is no different. I look forward to this journey with all of you this year, with a new map in our hands. Best regards, Michael Goldstein

Greater Atlanta Christian School creates stunning performing arts centre in existing building The Greater Atlanta Christian School (GACS) was looking to create a performing arts center on their 88-acre campus. They identified a 40-year-old, existing building as a possible solution. It was an opportunity to showcase a different way of thinking to their students. How to take things into the future, instead of simply tearing them down. Not only would the approach save time, preserving an existing building is far more sustainable than sending it to the landfill. Not to mention, constructing a new building is carbon intensive.
DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | April 2018
A new performing arts centre was carved out of that existing church building. The project wrapped up in January. “The joy of this project was two-fold,” said David Fincher, president of GACS. “One, the speed at which it could be done – with much work being done on the side, not here on campus. And two, taking mature facilities forward and repurposing them for the future in a beautiful way.” They also wanted a beautiful space. “Believe it or not, aesthetics matter as much to kids as they do to us as

grownups,” Fincher said. “A place of beauty furthers your thinking and it pulls your mind up, your heart up and causes your dreams to expand.” As the GACS team began the design process, there were a lot of changes to make. The proscenium needed to expand from 30 to 50 feet. The seating capacity needed to increase from 700 to nearly 1,000. “In order to accomplish that we needed to add a balcony in this existing building,” said Architect John Griminia of Cole Griminia and Associates.
already knew DIRTT! GACS and Cole Griminia and Associates worked with DIRTT on the high school buildings on campus. Conversations got underway and a new possibility began to emerge. “We were talking to DIRTT about wood panelling and wood wall systems, and we realized they had the capabilities to build a timber system that would be self supporting,” Griminia said. “It fit right into the scheme.”
This led to another challenge: the existing design of the building could not support a balcony and would require extensive renovations. But the renovations didn’t have to be too disruptive; they DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | April 2018

“We wanted a more classical architectural style and looked to examples in Europe of classic churches and cathedrals. […] We very much wanted to introduce some heavy timber trusses into the space to give it that kind of character,” said Griminia. In no time, DIRTT unleashed their secret weapon: Christoph Friedlos, a master timber framer with 37 years’ experience designing and building extraordinary timber structures. With Friedlos at the helm, the DIRTT and GACS team worked for six straight weeks to come up with a structurally sound and beautiful design for the new performing arts centre. The design process was unique to say the least. “Everything on the existing building was not level, square, or straight, the floor was uneven and sloped, so the site measurement was really difficult to do,” said Friedlos. “That was definitely the most complicated part.” To help ensure accurate site measurements were taken, DIRTT used a 3D-scan camera. It created a 3D model of the whole building. Leveraging our technology was pivotal in the design. “It’s very difficult when you design a building to be able to see and visualize every little detail and the VR DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | April 2018
7
APR 2018 Diggin’ It
allowed us to do that,” says Griminia. “We could zoom in on the trusses up high and really get a visual on what that was going to look like.”
As the installation process got underway, the site conditions continued to challenge the team, but the schedule wasn’t sacrificed.
“It’s this incredible blend of modern technology and old-world craftsmanship.” said Griminia.
Due to the size of the timber and the limited access to the building, all timber was transported inside by hand -- carefully balanced on top of a dolly. Agile spider cranes were also used due to the uneven nature of the floors and the confined work space.
The intricate design meant the timber needed to be cut on five different Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines: two located in Calgary, and three in Switzerland. And since each machine is different, every cutting file had to be adjusted to work with each specific machine.
In a few short weeks, DIRTT’s largest timber project to date was installed and complete. The installation is a testament

students’ reaction. “The students came in… at one point the curtain opened and behind the curtain was our orchestra and choir. There was a gasp that came across the crowd,” recalls Harsh.
“It was an amazing thing for all involved, to actually be able to install something like that and see how it comes together,” Friedlos said. “It’s quite emotional for anybody – it’s huge.”
“The students were elated and could not believe what they were seeing and just the beauty of the stage and that our orchestra and choir was there on stage ready to perform. They hadn’t imagined that could be in this space and so it’s really been a fantastic addition.”

However, it was only once they experienced their space in VR that they sent us the plans for a new renovation planned for Q3 of this year,” says Kyndal Smith, DIRTT Champion at Synergy Business Environments.
In order to bring this experience to life, Synergy purchased an Oculus Rift headset, an MSI laptop and an ICEvr license. They’ve been utilizing this powerful tool in their market since last year and have been very impressed with the results.

Imbedded tech screens were strategically placed in the space to allow others to have a visual representation of what the VR user is experiencing. These screens will also allow ICE to be displayed in plan view while VR experiences are taking place. Synergy chose to include numerous Corning® Willow® Glass tiles with graphics as well as unique tile setups to captivate clients as they enter the space.

Growing sustainability with timber
DIRTTbag Elias Fahssi talks about DIRTT Timber Frame at the Passive House Conference in Munich
Visitors hear about Timber at GRIT Building Solutions
The green behind timber goes beyond the leaves on the trees. It’s a building material that actually captures carbon as it grows. And DIRTT Timber is harvested from sustainably-managed forests. With sustainability so close to our hearts – and goals as an organization – timber has become a mainstay around DIRTT.
in Munich. Passive House sets a standard for energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Elias spoke about building Hygge – itself a DIRTT Timber Frame structure that takes sustainability to new heights. The exterior shell of Hygge is built to far exceed local standards for energy efficiency. The home is an opportunity to show anyone who visits what an energy efficient home can be.
Timber’s on trend. It’s not the flavor of the week, but a long-term and growing trend in the building industry. And DIRTT is leading the conversation. Elias Fahssi, DIRTT Timber Specialist was recently invited to present at the International Passive House Conference DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | April 2018

DIRTT Connext 2018: The concentrated client experience Chicago in June is now exclusively for Clients and their consultants. We’re moving all our Partner Day Learning away from the NeoCon schedule and dedicating our energies to the DIRTT Connext show from June 11 to 13. The announcement to switch things up first came out at our Partner Learning event in Phoenix last Fall. Everyone cheered when Mogens ran the idea up the flag pole. It means less cost for hotels etc. And it means our Partners don’t have to divide their attention between DIRTT and their furniture lines. The Connext Show, held in DIRTT’s Chicago Green Learning Center, will also see some changes. In past years, we’ve allowed all visitors in to see what we do and enjoy our hospitality. Well, sometimes it’s possible to be too popular. Our GLC was becoming more crowded and less pleasant for our Client tours. Plus, we were tired of hearing how DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | April 2018
sad we make movable wall makers when they rolled across the street from the Merchandise Mart after their showrooms closed. So the Connext show is invitation-only this year. Architects, designers and their Clients will be invited by their DIRTT Partners and DIRTT Reps. All vendors will be asked to come back Wednesday to take a tour if they really want one. This is a long-established rule at the NeoCon Show, so it shouldn’t be a biggie for them. The DIRTT Connext experience will be like no other. Our Client tours will be transported into the future where their spaces will be built with technology and with care. Partners who would like to take advantage of DIRTT rates at the Loews Hotel should contact Rebecca Strang rstrang@dirtt.net. 19

DIRTT culture: Hey there Chamber-inos! DIRTTbags love hosting. You could even say it’s part of our DNA. We all know that treating our guests like family is one of the reasons we’ve been successful over the years. If you’ve ever brought clients to a DIRTT Green Learning Center or on a factory tour, you’ll understand the magic that inspires our guests. Typically, our guests have some idea of what DIRTT is before they visit one of our Green Learning Centers. This March, we had a unique and special opportunity to host guest who knew almost nothing about what we do. At least until they walked through our doors!

Experiencing DIRTT Experience Written by Stephanie Ball
When I sat down on day one of the DIRTT Experience, I didn’t know what to expect. If I’m honest, I didn’t know much about DIRTT at all. I soon learned that a pillar of DIRTT’s vision is the fact construction needs to change. The time spent on construction sites can and should be a much smoother, shorter experience than what society is used to. If you’ve been in Calgary over the past couple of weeks, you may have seen me around. If we haven’t met, I’m Steph, a journalism student from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). I’m lucky enough to be completing my four-week practicum with all of you DIRTTbags. One thing I love about DIRTT is your tenacious passion for changing the path of the construction industry. Changing direction is something I’m on board with, switching my career path nearly a decade into my career. DIRTT ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS | Diggin’ It | April 2018
Before embarking on my new career in communications, I spent seven years as a construction cost consultant. I consulted for industrial, commercial, multi-storey residential, and energy projects. I saw a lot of delay claims. If one subcontractor didn’t have their ducks in a row, it would throw off the entire project. Delay claims often begin on the insurance adjuster’s desk, but inevitably end up in a lawyer’s office or in front of a judge. Bottom line: scheduling delays are major, expensive nightmares! During the DIRTT Experience, I couldn’t help but think back to some of those projects I had worked on. I wonder how things might have been different if DIRTT had been on the job? DIRTT provides solutions to these construction conflicts. That’s truly priceless. I was blown away to learn how much work goes into each DIRTT project. It’s 25

amazing how DIRTT makes something so complex run so smoothly. By the time the first day of DIRTT Experience was over, it was clear attendees had a new appreciation for their co-workers. I’ve noticed things move pretty fast around here. It’s easy to understand that DIRTTbags and Partners might find themselves buried in their own areas around DIRTT. They could fall out of the loop when it comes to new projects and developments. The DIRTT Experience was definitely an eyeopener. It ensured everyone was up to date on how to tell the DIRTT story for 2018 and what’s on DIRTT’s horizon. DIRTT Experience covered a lot of content. From high-level overviews to the nitty gritty of the different DIRTT elements. We talked about where DIRTT is going in healthcare, explored Hygge (such an amazing house!), and learned about our endeavours in education. The depth of our solutions – from power and networks, to millwork, integrated

technology, acoustics, and timber – is incredible. The factory tours and hands-on building exercises showcased DIRTT’s ingenious practices. DIRTT takes dreams and ideas and transforms them into beautiful real-life designs. I couldn’t think of a better place to be practicing communications. I would argue that DIRTT’s success is based on just that – communication. Transparency seems to run through your veins. I learned in the DIRTT Experience that talking among departments is highly encouraged. It’s a means to share our company culture. It boosts morale. It fosters creativity! And most importantly, it helps ensure no detail is overlooked. I can’t wait to get to know you all a little better over the next couple of weeks. It’s a privilege to help bring DIRTT’s vision to life. I’m keen to tell your stories as we propel the construction industry into the future.
