Discipleship Begins with Our Children Let me tell you our story. While in the trenches of a local church ministry, I began to work closely with children. They were receptive. They were eager. They were capable. But their spiritual growth was marginal. These children were not being challenged. They were not reaching their peak potential—and it was not their fault! You see, my training at Dallas Theological Seminary included a course taught by Dr. Howard Hendricks called “Principles of Discipleship.” That experience opened my eyes to how Jesus made disciples in the first century—and how that process should impact His Church today. As the course drew to a close, Prof Hendricks gave one final assignment: “When I visit your places of ministry,” he explained, “I’ll ask you only one thing—show me your disciples.” I left that room stunned and silent—but inspired. Later, my church in Colorado began searching for resources that would help us “make disciples.” We completed a lesson-by-lesson analysis of seven children’s programs. In the end, we concluded that no existing curriculum provided an adequate foundation to accomplish this goal. We decided to develop our own. Soon, a team of designers, writers, and illustrators began creating a discipleshipdriven Bible curriculum for children. After a decade of praying and preparing, writing and revising, teaching and testing, DiscipleLand was born. The vast majority of today’s Christian kids are spiritually malnourished. Fun and games are fine, but research reveals that we have raised a generation of children who have missed out on essential Bible training. To reach the spiritual heights that God intends, kids need a firm foundation in God’s Word. They need His truth, His Spirit, and our help. As you consider the needs of your children, please remember Jesus’ highest priority—“make disciples” (Matthew 28:18-20). Discipleship is the one thing we cannot neglect. Spark! Welcome

Greet each child by name. To create a warm, welcoming atmosphere, play worship music in the background.

Come and See

Lead the children around the room. Point out your moon and star decorations (use fishing line to hang stars and a moon from the ceiling, etc.).

Free Play

Give the children time to play and to become comfortable with their surroundings. Make sure every child has something to do. Help each child place a sticker on the attendance chart (available at DiscipleLand.com/downloads).

Snack Time

Teacher Guide, New Testament, Quarter C: “Jesus Amazes Us” (Lesson 1)

Great Faith Lesson 1

Big Idea Jesus healed a man without even seeing him. Bible Passage Jesus Heals a Sick Servant—Matthew 8:5–13 Lesson Summary Faith is mysterious to many, but simple and natural to others. Faith is seeing what God is doing and joining into it. Faith is being connected to God and experiencing the great things He intends to do.

The Roman centurion came to Jesus with a tangible need and a strong faith. As a military officer stationed in Galilee, he had evidently heard reports of Jesus’ healing power. Perhaps he investigated the dramatic things he had heard. Perhaps he personally listened to Jesus’ words and saw Him perform a miracle. Rather than dismiss the reports as “exaggerated” or “impossible,” he believed. Soldiers understand lines of authority. The centurion realized that Christ’s power came from a supernatural source. Jesus’ ability to perform miracles indicated His preeminence and authority. When a servant in the officer’s household was paralyzed and in great pain, this Gentile was willing to humble himself before a Jewish teacher and submit to His authority. The centurion boldly approached Jesus and asked Him to heal his servant. Preschoolers understand what it means to obey. They sense the security of submission and the safety of being under authority. They know that it can be rewarding to obey and dangerous to disobey. But more importantly, children

can learn great trust and experience peace as they submit to their parents, teachers, and to God. As they trust the authority of others, their faith can flourish.

Pray for Wisdom

Lord, thank You for being ever faithful and true. You are always worthy of my trust. It is a privilege to serve under Your authority. As I teach these children about faith, help them clearly understand that they can trust You. Give them opportunities to see Your mighty hand in their lives and to express their faith in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Open your Bible to the passage and place it on your lap. Show the Teaching Picture— Great Faith as you tell or read the story. (The Bible story is printed on page 12 and on the back of the Teaching Picture.)

Children can pretend to be doctors. They may wish to use the dolls as their patients or the children can take turns pretending to be sick. Talk about how they should listen and obey the doctor to help them feel better when they are sick.

The story, Great Faith, is based on Matthew 8:5–13. It captures the interest and attention of older preschool children. If you are teaching younger preschoolers, you may wish to use the shorter Summary/Review.

Sing With Joy

Move the children from the initial learning activity to the worship time with a favorite song. Select one below or use a preschool songbook or recording. • What a Mighty God We Serve (hymn) • O-B-E-Y (Donut Man) • Jesus Loves Me (traditional) • God is So Good (traditional)

Rehearse the Verse

Divide the Bible verse into phrases and invite the children to recite each phrase after you. Consider adding actions for key words or phrases. Lesson Memory Verse: Matthew 8:8 “Jesus, You can heal my servant!” Monthly Memory Verse: Mark 4:41 “The disciples were amazed. They said, ‘Even the winds and sea obey Jesus!’” Quarter Memory Verse: Matthew 14:33 “The disciples said, ‘You really are the Son of God!’” Verse Activity: Put the words of the verse to a familiar tune (such as Happy Birthday, Mary Had a Little Lamb, The Mulberry Bush, God is So Good).

Seek God’s Blessing

Talk with God about your time together with the children today, about the Bible story, and about any special needs. As you pray, use meaningful and simple words from your heart. The children will learn to pray by listening to you.

Before you tell the story lead children in marching around the room singing the song “I’m in the Lord’s Army.” Bring them back to the story area and instruct them to salute each time they hear the word “soldier” in the story.

Ask the children to think about a time when they were sick and needed to see a doctor and take medicine. Have them draw a line from the doctor and mom to the child who is happy. They can also place a “smiley face” sticker (found on sticker page) next to the children who are obeying. Explain that when they are sick they need to obey doctors and parents. They are showing faith in God and He will help them get better.

Ask God to help each child show genuine concern for people who are hurt. Thank God for His awesome healing power.

Bible Story—Great Faith (based on Matthew 8:5–13)

One day, Jesus came to Capernaum, a town near the Sea of Galilee. A Roman soldier who loved God lived there. This soldier knew that Jesus was powerful and could do anything. The soldier was excited to find out that Jesus was in his town. The soldier’s servant was very sick. He was in great pain. He couldn’t even move. The soldier loved his servant and wanted to help him. He needed Jesus’ help—fast. The soldier looked all through the town for Jesus. He kept going until he finally found Jesus. “I need Your help, Jesus!” said the soldier. “My servant is very sick. He can’t even walk anymore.” The soldier was very worried. Jesus was with a crowd of people. Everyone else wanted to talk with Jesus, too! But Jesus knew the soldier needed Him. Jesus knew the soldier trusted Him. Jesus listened to the soldier. “Yes. I will come to your house,” Jesus said. “I will heal your servant.” The people were surprised. “Would Jesus go inside a Roman soldier’s house?” they wondered. But Jesus was glad the soldier trusted Him. He was glad to help the soldier’s servant. This soldier loved God very much. He had faith in Jesus’ power. The soldier said, “Jesus, You are a great Man. I am not worthy for You to come into my home. “I know you can do anything, Jesus,” the soldier said. “You don’t need to come to my house. You can heal my servant from right here. Just say ‘Go!’ and my servant’s sickness will be gone! I believe that You can heal my servant without even seeing him.” 12

Jesus was amazed! This man had great faith. This man believed that Jesus could heal someone from far away. Jesus smiled and said, “You have great faith in God! Someday, you will come to My house in heaven. You will be welcome there because you trust Me! Now I will do everything you asked. Go home and see your servant.” The soldier thanked Jesus. Then he hurried all the way home. When the soldier went into the house, his servant was well! Jesus had healed him—just as He said! The soldier and his servant were so happy. They were glad to believe in Jesus. They were glad that Jesus would someday welcome them into His home in heaven!

Great Faith (Summary/Review)

An army officer hurried to find Jesus. “My servant is very sick,” he said. “He can’t even walk anymore.” “I’ll come heal him,” Jesus answered. “Lord,” the soldier replied, “I’m not worthy for You to enter my home. Just speak the words—You can heal him from right here.” Jesus was amazed at his great faith! “Go home to your servant,” Jesus told the officer. “I’ve done what you asked.” When the soldier returned home, his servant was well—Jesus had healed him! They were both glad to trust in Jesus.

Dee-Cy-Paul Story “Feeling Better” All day long, Paul knew that something was wrong. Where was Cy? What had happened? They were supposed to finish their craft project at school, but Cy hadn’t shown up for class! “Do you think he’s okay?” Paul asked Dee. “I hope Cy’s not sick!” “I don’t know,” said Dee. “Lots of kids at school have been getting sick lately.” “Hey, Dee,” said Paul. “I’ve got an idea! Let’s go over to Cy’s house later on and make sure he’s feeling okay!” After school, Dee and Paul walked over to his house. Paul knocked on the door. “Hello, Mrs. Yung,” he said. “Is Cy home?” “Yes, he is,” she said. “But I’m afraid he isn’t feeling very well. He got sick last night. I even had to take him to the doctor.” Paul gulped. Cy was sick! He wished there was something he could do. “Maybe we could just say ‘hi,’” he offered. Mrs. Yung thought for a moment. “Fine, please come in for a few minutes. But you have to promise not to go too close to Cy so you don’t get sick, too.” “We promise!” called Dee and Paul. They walked through the door and down the hallway to Cy’s room. He was propped up in bed, lying on two pillows. He didn’t look very happy. “Hey, guys,” he mumbled. “It’s me, Sick Cy. I hate being sick!” “Why?” asked Dee. “For one thing, the doctor told me I’m supposed to take all this medicine. But it tastes awful!” he said. “Well, have you been taking it?” asked Dee.

“That’s not all,” complained Cy. “I’m also supposed to lie here in bed all day long. It’s boring!” Dee shook her head. “It must be tough for you to stay in bed, Cy. You love to run around all the time. But if you don’t listen to your mom and doctor, you’re gonna get sicker! You’ll have to take even more medicine…”

“And maybe stay in bed for a whole week!” said Paul. Cy thought for a minute. “Maybe you two are right. I wanna get better fast.” Cy called for his mom to bring the medicine. And then he whispered to his friends. “It’s tough to listen and obey when you’re sick. Being sick is the hardest thing in the world!” Dee and Paul agreed. Then Dee had an idea. “Hey, Cy, let’s pray that God helps you be patient and that He helps you get better,” she said. “And another way to show you trust Jesus is to obey your mom when you’re sick.” “Yeah, prayer would be great,” said Cy. Dee prayed for Cy. Just as she finished, Mrs. Yung arrived. Cy opened his mouth wide and made an awful face as he swallowed the medicine. “Oh, I almost forgot,” said Paul. “Here!” He pulled out the craft project from school and handed it to Cy’s mom. “You can work on this even in bed,” he said. “I’m really glad you two came,” said Mrs. Yung. “Thanks for helping Cy understand how important it is to take his medicine. I can tell you two really care about him. That makes me happy.” Paul and Dee smiled. “God cares about Cy even more than we do,” said Paul. “Even when he’s sick!” Mrs. Yung smiled and handed the craft project to Cy. And for the first time that day, Cy smiled, too.

Cy shook his head. “No way!” “You should!” said Paul. “When I was sick last year, I didn’t take my medicine either. I got worse instead of better! But when I finally took it, I got better fast.”

You will need a thermometer and pajamas for Cy; a half-finished craft project for Paul.

INTRODUCTION

Dee: Well, Cy, are you ready for today’s story? Cy: [Offstage:] I don’t know. I don’t feel very good today. Dee: Perfect! Because in today’s story you are supposed to act sick! Cy: I won’t be acting. I am sick— Aaachoo! Paul: That was great, Cy! It almost sounded like a real sneeze! Great acting! Cy: I wasn’t acting. Dee: Well, then! Let’s get started!

SCRIPT

Paul: Hmm. I wonder where Cy is today? He was supposed to work on the craft project with me at school. Hmm. [Enter Dee.] Dee: Hey, Paul, have you seen Cy? Paul: Nope. Where do you think he is? You think he’s okay? I hope he isn’t sick or anything! Dee: I don’t know. Lots of kids at school have been getting sick lately! Paul: Hey, Dee, I’ve got an idea! Let’s go over to his house later on and make sure he’s feeling okay! Dee: [To audience:] So that day, after school, we asked our moms if it would be okay to visit Cy. They both said it would be fine. So, we walked over to his house… [Paul and Dee cross stage to where Cy has entered. He has a thermometer sticking from his mouth and is wearing pajamas.] Dee: Hey, Cy! You look sick.

Cy: [In a nasally, congested voice; maybe sneezing and wheezy.] I feel sick— aaachoo! Be careful not to get too close, or you two will probably end up sick too! I hate being sick. Dee: Why? Cy: For one thing, the doctor told me I’m supposed to take all this medicine. But it tastes awful! Dee: Well, have you been taking it? Cy: [Shakes his head.] No way! Sometimes I pretend to, but when my mom’s not looking I spit it all out in the sink! Paul: [Gasps.] You shouldn’t do that, Cy! She’s trying to help you get better. So is your doctor. Last year when I was sick I didn’t take my medicine. I got worse instead of better! But when I finally took it, I got better fast. Cy: Well, that’s not all. I’m supposed to just lie here in bed all day long. It’s boring! Dee: It must be tough for you to stay in bed, Cy. You love to run around all the time. She was very glad that we’d encouraged Cy to take his medicine. And when we left, Cy was hard at work on his craft project. All of us were feeling better, even Cy. [Curtain.]

APPLICATION

Paul: Good job, Cy! I know you really didn’t want to act in today’s story, but you did a great job. Cy: I wasn’t acting. I’m really sick. When can I go home to bed? Dee: One minute, Cy. First, we want to make sure all the boys and girls understand the story! Cy: I understand that I’m—[Sneezes directly at audience.]—aaachoo!— kinda sick… Paul: Be careful, Cy. You’re gonna get someone else sick. Now, even though you aren’t feeling too good today, it’s important to remember that faith in Jesus isn’t something we turn on and off. We need to show it all the time, even when we’re sick! Dee: That’s right isn’t it, Cy? Cy: Yup. You guys are right. Can I go home to bed now? Dee: What do you say, kids? Should we let Cy go now? [Encourage responses.] Cy: [Sneezes at audience again.] Aaachoo! Dee: Goodbye, everyone! Paul: And remember, Jesus rewards people who show their faith in Him. So, let your faith shine all the time, even when you’re not feeling great! See you next time! [Curtain.]

Cough & Cold Pictures (suggested Disciple Time activity)

Supplies: construction paper, markers, scissors, tissue, glue Before class, draw faces on construction paper with the mouths in the shape of a circle. Across the top write the word, “A-a-a-choo!” After giving each child one of these sheets, have them trace around one of their hands on another piece of paper and cut it out. For younger preschoolers, you may want to have hand shapes already cut out. Help the children glue the hand next to the mouth on the paper. Next, slide a tissue in between the hand and the mouth. The tissue should cover only the mouth. You may want to add a small amount of glue to keep the tissue in place. This activity will remind the children to cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze to prevent germs from spreading and making others sick.

Singing Telegram

Supplies: tape recorder and blank cassette If you know someone who is sick, have the children record their voices on a cassette tape and send the tape as a get-well greeting. They can sing the following words to the tune of We Wish You a Merry Christmas or make up their own words to a favorite tune. We wish you a happy day. We wish you a happy day. We wish you a happy day. Get well real soon!

We Must Have Faith

Encourage the children to sit or stand in a circle and do the actions with you as you say the words. We’re looking for Jesus—a boy is sick. (hand above eyes as if searching) Is He there? No. (point and shake head “no”) Keep looking...(hand above eyes again) We must have faith! (loud) We must have faith! (louder) Hurry, we’re looking for Jesus—a boy is sick! Get Well Card

Supplies: construction or colored copy paper, crayons or markers, old greeting cards, scissors, glue Before class, cut out pictures from old greeting cards. Fold construction

paper in half and write, “Get Well Soon” on the front. Give each child a piece of folded construction paper and allow them to decorate the inside as they wish with crayons, markers, and cut-out pictures.

Taste Testing

(for older preschoolers) Supplies: paper plates, salted pretzels, apple slices, dill pickles, candy or anything else that would be salty, sweet and sour Be aware of any food allergies before doing this activity. Give children a chance to sample foods that taste different. Talk about foods they like and those they don’t like. Explain that even though some foods don’t taste as good as others, they may keep us healthy. Compare those foods to medicine they may have to take when they are sick. Even though some medicines don’t taste very good, it needs to be taken to help them feel better. Calling All Heroes Lesson 1

Big Idea People need a special Hero to save them from sin. Bible Passage Genesis 1-3 Lesson Summary

In this first lesson, the world falls into desperate straits. God created paradise, but Adam and Eve chose the tree of knowledge over the tree of life. As a result, humanity needed a Hero to save it from destruction. In each lesson, a new Bible hero rises. Children will explore his or her life-story in light of one heroic quality. But the Hero who will redeem the world from sin must have not one, but all of these qualities. Each lesson points to God’s promised Hero, Jesus Christ. Allow your kids to become excited about heroes, even if it means an occasional tangent. Their excitement will help them understand Israel’s anticipation for God’s promised Messiah. Continue to point children ahead to Jesus, the only Hero who could truly save the world.

Bible Background

Genesis’ first three chapters establish four principles: 1) God made the universe; 2) Adam and Eve began the human race; 3) Adam and Eve sinned, causing the fall of humanity; 4) Someone descended from Adam would pay sin’s price for everyone, bringing salvation to all who believe in Him.

DISCIPLE TARGETS KNOWLEDGE

Jesus, who was to come and redeem the human race, was also there at the creation of the world (John 1:1-3). All things were created through Him and will eventually be restored by Him. God created a perfect world, but He allowed free choice—and Adam and Eve’s failure to obey God brought consequences. They listened to Satan, who spoke through the serpent (2 Corinthians 11:3,14). Still, God gave hope. His promise of a Savior came also to Abraham, Jacob, and then to the prophets.

Teacher Devotional

It took God six days to create the world and every living thing. It took seconds for Adam and Eve to toss His benevolence aside for a knowledge that included hard work and death. But God had a plan. He prepared a people to proclaim His name and to present His gift of salvation. We have become that people. As you prepare to take your kids through the Old Testament, fix your eyes on Jesus, the greatest gift of all! Dear God, open my eyes to see Your gifts. Guide me with Your love to do what is right before You. Thank You for the freedom to teach for You unashamed because of what Jesus Christ has done for me. In Jesus’ most precious name, amen.

Ask children to fold their hands and shut their eyes for prayer. Pray that your kids will understand how sins mess up good things in life. Thank God for sending Jesus to forgive their sins. Close by thanking God for each child by name and for the opportunity to learn His Word together.

Memorize God’s Word Topic: Everyone Needs a Hero Reference: Romans 3:23

Memorization Activity: Have the children form a circle and then squat down. They will repeat the Bible verse after you. The entire group should repeat the memory verse a second time, but this time, they should pop up with each word and then squat back down.

Special Fingers (10-15 minutes)

This hands-on activity reveals how God made each person unique. Supplies: yardstick, scale, markers, yarn Have kids each trace one hand on a sheet of paper while you use a yardstick and scale to record everyone’s height and weight. On each paper, write a child’s height on the first finger and weight on the second. On the third finger, write his or her age. Then have children color the fourth fingers the same color as their eyes and the fifth the same color as their hair. Write their names in the palm of the hands. Let children know that God created them specially to serve Him. Finally, show them how to roll both ends so that they have a scroll to remind them how special they are to God. Tie the scroll with yarn.

Go around the circle and ask each child to repeat one word of the memory verse after you. When a child says the word, he or she should pop up, say it, and then squat back down. Repeat several times.

Genesis 1-3

Open your Bible to Genesis 1. The Bible tells us there is a bad guy who fell from heaven. He used to be an angel. God is stronger than he is. God is smarter. The bad guy, Lucifer, wanted to be like God. When God said, “No,” Lucifer tried to fight Him. So God threw him out of heaven. We call Lucifer the devil now. Remember—the devil is not as big or as strong as God. Have kids repeat after you, “God is stronger.” God is so strong that He made light and darkness from nothing. He made the sky and the oceans. He made dry land with trees and flowers to decorate it. He made the sun to shine during the day, and the moon and stars to twinkle at night. He made fish, birds, and animals. Then God made Adam, the first man. He made everything. Have children repeat after you, “God made everything good.” God took only six days to make the world. When God made Adam, He scooped up the ground and breathed life into it. God told Adam to take care of everything He had made in the garden. Have kids repeat after you, “God placed Adam in charge of the garden.” Adam realized that there was no one like him, and he was lonely. So God put Adam to sleep and created Eve. He took a rib from Adam’s side and made her. This made Adam happy. This made Eve happy. Most important, it made God happy. Have children repeat 12

after you, “God made Adam and Eve happy.” Show the Teaching Picture KA.1 of Adam and Eve in the garden. God had one rule. He told Adam and Eve that they could not eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge. Adam and Eve did not obey God. One day, when they were near the tree, the devil— disguised as a snake—said, “If you eat this fruit, you will know what God knows. You will know about right and wrong.” Have kids repeat, “God had one rule.” The fruit looked tasty to Eve. She listened to the snake and ate it. Then she gave the fruit to Adam and he ate it, too. The snake was right. They knew what was right and what was wrong. They knew they had disobeyed God. Have children repeat, “Adam and Eve disobeyed God.” They tried to hide from God—but no one can do that! God found them and asked, “What have you done?” Adam blamed Eve. Eve blamed the snake. This did not make God happy. That’s when the world changed. Adam and Eve had to leave the garden. Bad things could now happen, and the devil could try to hurt them. From then on, women would feel pain when they had babies. From then on, men would have to work hard to grow food to eat. They could never return to the garden. Show the Teaching Picture KA.2 of Adam and Eve leaving the garden. Have kids repeat, “Adam and Eve needed a Hero to save them.” God loved Adam and Eve so much that He forgave them. He promised that He would one day send a Hero to save them and their children. We’ll learn more about that Hero later, but His name is Jesus. Have children repeat, “Help us God. We need a Hero.”

Read the story with the children the first time through. The second time, pause for them to “read” the illustrations. Repeat until they can read the story on their own. God made the sun, earth, plants, and animals. God made Adam and Eve. God told Adam and Eve not to eat the fruit of the one tree. But Adam and Eve ate the fruit. This made Adam and Eve unhappy. God was unhappy, too.

Doing the Impossible (5 minutes)

This movement-based activity shows the type of hero that God promised. Have your children take a superhero test. Line them all against the wall. Ask them first to act out and then to actually do each of the following things: • • • • • •

Fly across the room. Shoot fire out of your hand. Jump up and touch the ceiling. Stand in place but stretch your body across the room. Throw icicles out your ears. Turn invisible.

Once the children have failed to really do these things, explain that they can imagine these things happening, but no one can do them for real. Only God can do the impossible. To forgive our sins, God sent a Hero who had godly characteristics but who was also human. Adam and Eve were human, but they could not do the impossible like God could. They were not the heroes that God had promised.

Ripped Apart (15-20 minutes)

This group project illustrates sin’s influence on our relationship with God. Supplies: butcher paper, markers or crayons, clear packing tape Lay a piece of butcher paper on the floor. On one half of the paper, have children draw stick figures of themselves, Adam and Eve, friends, and family. Leave the other half of the butcher paper white to represent God. Write “God” on the blank side and “People” on the side with the children’s pictures. When the kids have finished coloring, ask for four volunteers—two to hold up each end of the butcher paper and two to hold the paper along the top. You should hold the butcher paper in the center.

What did people need? Encourage them to answer that people needed a hero. Get your tape. Have kids put the butcher paper on the floor so the torn sheets line up together. God said that He would send a Hero. Place tape across the tear. This Hero had to mend the tear between people and God. Have your volunteers hold up the butcher paper again. Only a Hero could bring people back to God.

Closing Prayer

Have children each hold up a hand. They can point to their thumbs and say, “I will;” their second fingers and say, “Say thank you;” their third fingers, “Say I’m sorry;” their fourth fingers, “Ask for things;” and their fifth fingers to shout, “Praise God. Amen.” Point to your second finger for children to quietly thank God for something. Thank You for this class. Point to your third finger for children to quietly confess their sins. Forgive us for doing the things we do wrong. Point to your fourth finger for children to quietly ask God for help. Please help us understand we need a Hero. Point to your fifth finger for children to shout, “Praise God. Amen.”

Closing Words

As your children gather their belongings to leave, remind them to show their parents their papers from class. Tell them to keep their eyes out for Jesus, the Hero who can save the world from sin. Next time, we’ll meet a man who never died. We will learn about righteousness, a big word which just means doing what is right. See you then!

Dee-Cy-Paul “Bookends”

Introduction (5 minutes) Use this “ hook” to introduce the lesson. Dee and Cy were so excited to play superheroes that they forgot the house rule: “No running in the living room.” Unfortunately, they only remembered it after they knocked over a big plant that crashed to the floor. Dee and Cy broke a house rule, and now something much bigger was destroyed.

Dee-Cy-Paul Story “Broken House Rules” Dee tied a cape around her neck. “Daring Dee to the rescue!” She took off running around the living room. This was fun. Cy put on his invisible flying sneakers and ran in the opposite direction yelling, “Super Cy is here!” Daring Dee stopped beside a plant. “The Bible says God created all the plants. I’ll use my light power to help this one grow!” She held her hand out to the plant. “Daring Dee to the rescue!” She did a high kick in the air. No one could stop her. Cy paused at the television set. “Your mom and dad don’t want us watching TV today. I’ll zap it with my lightning breath so it won’t come on!” Cy opened his mouth and made blowing sounds. With a quick jump to his left, he ran past Dee saying, “Super Cy is here!”

Conclusion (5 minutes) If you used the introduction to begin your lesson, use this to conclude.

Dee sped after Super Cy. “Let’s go outside and play superheroes in the back.”

When Mr. Morgan came to the living room, Dee blamed the mess on Cy, and Cy blamed it on Dee. After Dee’s father explained how much Adam and Eve lost when they broke God’s rule and wouldn’t tell the truth, the children admitted what they did wrong. Although it took Jesus, the eternal Hero, to fix Adam and Eve’s problem, Mr. Morgan put the two superheroes to work to clean the mess and save the plant. The next time you think about breaking a rule, consider what else could be broken and might need a superhero to fix.

Cy tried to run backwards but bumped into Dee as he said, “What did you say?” They fell to the wood floor, and Dee’s cape became tangled in Cy’s arms. “I said we should go outside.” Dee pulled her cape loose and stood up. “No, it’s too hot.” Cy rubbed his arm. “I’m having fun here.” Dee shook her head and held out a hand to him. “It’s my house, and I say we go outside, Silly Cy.” When Cy glared at her, Dee yanked him to his feet so fast that they both stepped backwards and hit the big plant. The pot fell over and broke. The plant flew out. Dirt was all over the rug. “Oh, no!” Dee cried, putting a hand over her mouth. Dee’s father entered the room. “What’s going on in here?” The children hurried to their feet. “I was Daring Dee,” began Dee.

“And I was Super Cy,” added Cy, looking at Dee “but Dee yanked my arm.” “Because Cy ran backwards and made me bump into him.” Dee put her hands on her hips. “Were you running in the house?” asked her father. Dee and Cy lowered their eyes. “Yes,” they said together. Mr. Morgan shook his head. “You disobeyed our house rule, just like Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s garden rule. Instead of admitting they were wrong, though, Adam blamed Eve, and Eve blamed a serpent. When they disobeyed and shifted the blame, something much bigger than a pot was broken.” Mr. Morgan continued, “When you disobey, things get hurt, like this plant did. Now, what happened?” Dee took a step forward. “I pulled Cy too hard, and we knocked the plant over. Will it die?” She felt awful. “It was my fault too, Mr. Morgan. I’m sorry.” Cy moved to Dee’s side. “God fixed Adam and Eve’s problem with Jesus. Can we fix this one with anything? Will the plant die?” “It will be fine, if you two superheroes help,” said Mr. Morgan. “Dee, why don’t you get the vacuum while I pick up and get a new pot. Cy, go ask your mother if we can borrow some of her potting soil.” “This is a job for a superhero.” Cy took a quick step to start running and then stopped, not wanting to break the house rule again. He walked to the front door. Dee looked out the window and saw him run only after closing the door behind him. Through the open window, Dee yelled, “Vacuum Girl to the rescue!”

Dee-Cy-Paul Puppet Script “Broken House Rules” The words in italics are notes for you and your puppeteers; they are not to be read aloud. You will need capes for Dee and Cy and a baseball cap for Paul. A potted houseplant should sit at one side of the stage and a picture of a television set should sit at the other side of the stage.

Dee: [Follows Cy.] Let’s go outside and play superheroes in the back.

Dee: [Steps forward.] I pulled Cy and we knocked the plant over.

[Cy stops and Dee bumps into him.]

Cy: [Moves to Dee’s side.] It was my fault too, Mr. Morgan. I’m sorry.

Cy: What? [Dee and Cy fall down.] Dee: We should go outside. [Standing up.]

Paul: What do you think we should do about this?

Cy: No, it’s too hot. Let’s stay in.

Cy: God fixed Adam and Eve’s problem with Jesus. Can we fix this with anything?

INTRODUCTION

Dee: Well, it’s my house and I say we go outside, Silly Cy.

Paul: We can if you two superheroes are ready to help. Dee and Cy: We are.

[Allow time for audience response.] Cy: I did, and I blamed it on Dee.

[Dee yanks Cy to his feet, but she is offbalance. Dee and Cy fall against the plant, which crashes to the ground offstage. Paul enters as Mr. Morgan.]

Paul: You didn’t.

Paul: What’s going on in here?

Dee: He did, but I broke it, too, and blamed it on Cy.

[Dee and Cy quickly stand up.]

Paul: You didn’t.

Cy: [Looks at Dee.] I was Super Cy, and Dee yanked my arm.

Dee: Hey kids, have any of you ever broken a rule?

Cy: She did. Paul: I’ve got to see this. Cy: Paul, if you’ll play Dee’s father, we’ll show the kids exactly what happened. Paul: Just call me Mr. Morgan. [Exit Dee, Cy, and Paul.]

Teacher Guide, Quarter A: “Family Life with God” (Lesson 8)

Homes Bible-times homes were very simple. Typical houses had only one room where the whole family ate, slept, and spent time. Cooking fires made the air stuffy. In winter, many people moved sheep or goats into the house. Most homes were made of mud with brushwood roofs. Furniture was sparse, and beds were mats on the floor. Still, homes were a refuge from the dangers of wild beasts and of other people. Some people added living space on their flat roofs, which is where the Shunammite woman made a room for Elisha. Children will see how important it was for Elisha to have a place to stay in his travels, and that God is always a “safe place” when they feel troubled. They will be inspired to use their homes to serve others, just like the woman from Shunem.

Bible Background

Shunem was north of Jerusalem, a bit south of the Sea of Galilee. The Bible tells us that Elisha, God’s prophet and Elijah’s successor, traveled through this town somewhat regularly. Travel at that time was never easy and could hold dangers. Besides the harshness of the elements, thieves and brigands could waylay a traveler. Elisha traveled with his servant, Gehazi. Have you ever locked yourself out of your house or car? Argh! It’s so frustrating. In contrast, being handed the key to your first home—whether it’s the first apartment you rented or the first house you bought—produces a sense of exhilaration and pleasure. Thank God for the home He has provided you today. One of your tasks as a teacher is to offer a refuge for your students—a safe place where they can come to know God. What a privilege! My Lord and Father, the place we call “ home” is just a temporary resting place. Our true home is in heaven, and we’ ll enjoy it forever as we worship You. Increase my desire to help my students find refuge in You and establish their heavenly home by acknowledging Jesus as their Savior. Equip me and prepare me for that job this week. In Christ’s name, amen.

Missionary Biography 8 of 12—William Carey—Troubles and Joy Missionary stories can have a profound impact on children. Take 1-2 minutes to read this brief narrative. Download discussion questions at DiscipleLand.com/downloads (enter the keyword “ family”). Sigh. Sigh. Sigh. William Carey is 46 years old. He thinks back over the last fourteen years in India. He remembers how the missionaries gladly welcome the first two Indian Christians. They all sit down and eat a meal together. This makes their Hindu neighbors very angry. They have broken the strict Hindu religious laws. Still William is very happy. He baptizes Krishna Pal and his own son in the Hooghly River. Two months later the Bengali New Testament rolls off the press. Now, growing numbers of new Christians can read the Bible in their own language. William continues to translate Scripture and to teach and preach. As time goes by, his wife, Dorothy, becomes weaker and weaker. Finally, Dorothy dies seven years after the first Indian Christian is baptized. William grieves for Dorothy. He remembers the challenges she faced in India. Yet, he thanks God for giving her to be his wife and the mother of their children. Bring out your Shepherd’s Bag and have children guess what’s inside (small toy house). Bring out the small toy house. Connect the Bible memory time to the idea of God as a refuge by playing freeze tag. Make a “safe” zone where children can pause during play. Whoever is “It” tags a child. The teacher calls out “freeze!” and everyone freezes. The tagged child will say the reference and verse on the board, and that child becomes “It.” Explain that God can be like the “safe” zone. Interest Teacher—Choose one activity that will involve students and grab their attention.

Bible-Times Homes (10 minutes)

This discussion activity compares homes of today with those in Bible times. Supplies: camping tent or large sheet

Before class, set up a large camping tent or rig a sheet to make a tent—large enough for the whole class, if possible. Invite students to enter the tent and pretend what it would be like to live there permanently. Make motions—sweep, roll up a floor mat, start a cooking fire, knead bread, pour oil from a jar, stir food in a pot, shoo out small animals— and have the children imitate you. Discuss the differences between homes in Bible times and homes today. Explain that just like now, homes in Bible times were places where people could be safe from dangers. God wants to be that safe place for us as our refuge.

“Home Sweet Home” Snack (10 minutes) This edible craft reinforces the Bible lesson and gives the kids something to munch on. Supplies: graham crackers, soft cream cheese or canned frosting Challenge the kids to use graham crackers and frosting or cream cheese “mortar” to build a simple boxy Bible-times house. Once the houses are finished, they may eat their creations.

Houses. Huts, & Hostels (10 minutes)

This group drawing activity introduces the topic of homes and of God as refuge. In this activity all the kids will draw at the same time. They can stand at the boards, sit on the floor or at tables, and use whatever medium you’ve chosen. Brainstorm about different kinds of houses, such as houses in other countries they’ve seen in pictures, apartments, castles, igloos, teepees, and so on. Have each child draw one type of house. Allow three to five minutes as everyone draws, then let everyone take a “home tour” to see what was produced. Comment on the different features you see. Talk to children about their own homes too—help them relate what others have and don’t have. I imagine there are even more kinds of houses than what we have drawn here. People in other places live very differently than we do. But houses all do the same thing, whatever they look like. They give us a safe place to live. Homes keep us safe from dangerous storms and strangers who might want to hurt us. God is like that. He is a refuge, a safe place, for us to go to whenever we need Him.

Lesson 8

Create the scene of the simple room the Shunammite woman made for Elisha. Lay out a blanket/towel as a sleeping mat, place a table and chair next to it and a candle/lamp on the table. Use a tent from the “Bible-Times Homes” activity in Spark Interest if appropriate. Gather for the lesson near this “room” and refer to it during the lesson. Open your Bible to 2 Kings 4:8-37. Samuel grew up serving God because God planned for him to be a prophet. A prophet gives people God’s messages. Today we’re finding out about another prophet named Elisha. He traveled around Israel to do God’s work. Sometimes he traveled through a town named Shunem. A kind woman in this town would invite Elisha to her house to eat. She was always glad to share some food with him in her house. Then this woman had another idea. Show an expression that suggests you have a good idea. She said to her husband, “This man who regularly passes through our town is a holy man of God. Why don’t we make a little room for him on our roof? We can give him a bed, a table, chair, and a lamp. Then he can stay with us whenever he comes this way!” So that’s what they did! Point to the “room” you created and/or show the Teaching Picture 1A.15 of Elisha’s room.

children, he could ask God to give her a baby. Elisha told the lady that next year God would give her a son. She was surprised and afraid that it would not happen. But, what do you think God did? That’s right, God gave her a little boy the next year! The woman and her husband loved their son. One day this boy had an awful headache. Hold your head like it really hurts. A servant carried him from the fields to his mother, and she held him and rocked her little boy in her lap. She tried to make him feel better, but the boy died. The mother carried him up to the room where Elisha always stayed. The boy’s mother remembered that Elisha was a man of God. She got on a donkey and rode a long way to find him. Elisha saw her coming. He knew something was wrong. The woman from Shunem fell at Elisha’s feet sobbing and told him her son had died. She knew Elisha could help her because he was a man of God. So Elisha went back to the woman’s house. He saw the boy was dead, and he prayed to God. Then he lay over the boy and he felt him coming back to life! While Elisha watched, the

Elisha was very happy to have a safe place to stay while he traveled. One day he was resting in the new room they made for him. He thought about how kind the Shunammite woman had been to him. She was sharing her house with him, and showing hospitality. Do you know what hospitality is? It is when you make people feel welcome in your home. Elisha wanted to give this woman something for being so nice. He asked her, “Would you like me to say something good about you to the king so he can reward you?” The Shunammite woman said, “No, thank you.” She was happy living just as she was. boy sneezed seven times (pretend to sneeze seven times) and opened his eyes. Show the Teaching Picture 1A.16 of Elisha and boy. When the Shunammite woman saw that her son was alive again, she bowed in front of Elisha. She was so thankful and happy to have her boy back.

Door Decor (10-15 minutes)

This group art project celebrates God’s provision of homes and safety for us all. Supplies: butcher paper, crepe paper strips, markers, other art supplies Before class, cover both sides of your door with butcher paper. Have children think of how decorations are used at birthdays and holidays. Explain that they will decorate the classroom door to thank God for providing homes and safe places. If you have a large class, encourage children to work on both sides of the door or more than one door if possible, or take turns decorating. Write “God is our Refuge” on the door and have kids make and decorate signs to mount on the door, as well as other art, crepe paper streamers and bows. Let them use their creativity to express themselves.

Lesson 8

This woman was wise. She used her house to serve others, and gave Elisha a refuge when he traveled. That’s called hospitality. And just as Elisha had a safe place to stay, God is our refuge. We can show others our love for God by using our homes to serve and care for people. Safe homes are another gift from God.

This game excites children about the lesson and reviews the Bible passage. Supplies: large cardboard box, small prizes and gag gifts Before class, prepare a large cardboard box. Cut one of the four sides away and on the opposite side cut three flaps and label them Door #1, Door #2, and Door #3. Set this box on a table and have yourself or an assistant ready with small prizes (candy bars, small toys, etc.) and gag gifts (rocks, candy pacifiers, cans of sardines, etc.) Ask review questions about the Bible passage. If the contestant can answer correctly, he or she can choose whether they want what is behind Door #1, Door #2, or Door #3. Expand this game by asking ways children can show hospitality in their own homes.

Have the children thank God for their homes, remembering something about it that is special to them (their own rooms, a favorite spot, having fun in their houses, their yards, etc.). Lead the children in asking God to show them ways they can show hospitality. Let each child pray silently, while you pray in phrases or short sentences. Finish by praising God for being our refuge in times of trouble.

Big Idea God sent Jesus and John to fulfill His wonderful plan for the world. Lesson Summary

The Old Testament contains many prophecies concerning the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. God had planned these events since the beginning of time. Both of these births were miraculous—John’s because Elizabeth was old and infertile and Jesus’ because Mary was a virgin. Through these two miracle babies, God continued unfolding His plan for the salvation of mankind. Children will see that both of these pregnancies were supernatural, but the birth of Jesus Christ was unusually significant, because through Him, God entered the human race. God directly intervened into the world of men. By relating these births to their own, students will become excited about the special plan God has for their lives.

Bible Background

God chose the perfect time to send Jesus to the world. A general feeling of unrest characterized these times, but there was a commonly known language (Greek) and an unprecedented system of roads (Roman). Good news would spread quickly. John and Jesus were born into a world dominated by the Roman Empire.

Herod the Great, appointed by Caesar to rule Palestine, was jealous of Caesar’s authority and never hesitated to wield his own power. Day-to-day life for Jews under Roman control was still heavily influenced by Jewish beliefs and culture. The Temple in Jerusalem was the heart of national life. Synagogues in each city were the center of religious and community life. Many in Israel retained their hope that God would send the Messiah.

Take a moment to consider all the ways that God is using your unique gifts and talents to benefit these children and His kingdom. Submit to His will and authority to empower you as you teach. Lord, the children need to know that absolutely nothing is impossible with You. Bring the children to class eager and ready to find You. As I share the stories of Elizabeth and Mary, help me to convey eternal truths that will find their way into the very core of each child’s heart. When Hudson Taylor was a young teenager, God spoke one single word to him—CHINA. God was calling Hudson to carry His message of salvation to the other side of the world! Although only Jesus can save the world from sin, you have a very special role to play in God’s plan too. He made each baby unique and special on purpose, and we can be happy that He made us just the way we are.

Kings Rule (1050–930 BC) During this era, Saul disobeys the Lord shortly after Samuel anoints him king (1 Samuel). Samuel then anoints David who eventually unites all twelve tribes into one nation (2 Samuel). Later on, David’s son, Solomon, builds the magnificent Temple in Jerusalem (1 Kings 1-11). For 400 years, tribal judges led God’s people. But discontent and insecurity became more and more evident. Israel’s trust in God waned. The people wanted to be like other nations—with a king who would unify the people, centralize the government, and lead the military. Though God warned that the people’s desire for a king would bring hardship, the Lord granted their wishes. He selected Samuel, the last judge, to anoint Israel’s first two kings, Saul and David.

Bible Background

1 Kings charts David’s final days and the ascension of Solomon, his son. Solomon’s kingdom was noted for its brilliance and glory—outstanding in size, affluence, and influence. When Solomon built and dedicated the Jerusalem Temple, his reign reached its pinnacle.

The “golden era” of Israel’s history came to an end with Solomon—who rarely displayed the devotion to God and spiritual strength that characterized his father, David. Solomon’s lavish public works and personal lifestyle sowed seeds of discord and mistrust, ultimately corrupting the kingdom. In spite of his lineage and wisdom, Solomon’s spiritual life failed to sustain the potential expressed in the Temple dedication.

The Bible records both good and bad aspects of Israel’s leaders. The first three kings, Saul, David, and Solomon, won great victories when they trusted God. They also made agonizing mistakes when they showed selfish independence. Our character is tested and shaped daily. Obedience brings abundant blessings. Sin leaves lasting scars. Don and Carol move into their new home near the Sawi village. Built with poles, a split palm bark floor, and insulated with palm leaves, it looks similar to the other Sawi homes. At night, however, the kerosene lamps inside make the home glow in the darkness! Carol runs a medical clinic from her front porch. She uses her nursing skills to treat people who are sick. Don works with the Sawi and learns their ways. Slowly Don and Carol learn to speak the Sawi language. In order to learn a new word, Don points to an object and motions with his hands that he wants to know the name for that object. The Sawi say the word and then Don writes down the sounds of the new word in a notebook. Before long, Don realizes that every object he points at is called by the same word. He and Carol are puzzled and curious. Finally, they realize that word the Sawi are saying is not the word for the object he is pointing at, but the word for “finger”! Separate kids into small teams. Assign each team one part of the Temple to build (foundation, interior, inner sanctuary, inner courtyard, furnishings). When they are finished, explain that priests brought the Ark of the Lord and placed it into the Most Holy Place in the Temple. Open your Bibles to 1 Kings 3. When God asked King Solomon this same question, what did Solomon request? (Wisdom to rule God’s people well.) Why did God give Solomon what he asked for? (His request was not self-serving. His prayer request was for the sake of others, God’s beloved people.) How does Solomon’s request compare with yours? (Encourage students to share their requests, but don’t force them.)
