WhatIs
Downtown Bernardsville
Communities all over the country have experienced a dip in activity. Whether its the growth of online shopping, a slow down in the economy, trends among a new generation of buyers, or any other generalized excuse, the truth is, it doesn't matter. What does matter is how we grow from here. This is where Downtown Bernardsville comes in. Revitalizing Bernardsville is not simply a one and done project fix. Revitalization requires a plan, a strategy, carefully reviewed data, and a selection of projects, both long and short term, to provide our community with increased property values, job growth, a thriving economy, and more.
MEMBERS OF & SUPPORTED BY
This summer, Downtown Bernardsville released a survey asking everyone: "What is our Why?" and "Who are we as a town?" Understanding the answers to these questions help us narrow our focus to choose the projects that will provide a benefit to the community. We will also welcome newcomers with a focused strategy, starting with who we are and building from there. The survey results demonstrated a response that is directly in line with the demographic and psychographic data we collected. Our shopping trends and demographic data, all point to the Trader Joe's shopping, experience loving, healthy and active family life we already seem to follow. Right now, concentrating our strategy for growth on what we already have and who we already are is how we will find success with revitalization.

ordinances to offer music in our walking district or cleaning up storefronts and business facades. Each project, whether created for the short or long term, will contribute to a positive shift we will be seeing in our town in just the next 3-5 years.
Jumping in to make significant changes in our landscape or appealing to a market that just isn't here would be simply continuing our path in a failed direction. As a result of our preliminary research, the focus is clear.
ECONOMIC VITALITY focuses on capital, incentives, and other economic and financial tools to assist new and existing businesses, catalyze property development and create a supportive environment for entrepreneurs and innovators that drive local economies. DESIGN supports a community's transformation by enhancing the physical and visual assets that set the commercial district apart.
CODE 000 000 / 2020
Now, Downtown Bernardsville will compile a list of action items or projects, such as beautifying the Mount Airy Road overpass with a mural, working with our movie theater to preserve its charm, revamping our events to cater to our market, unifying store hours and enhancing the downtown shopping experience, developing way finding signage, updating old
Having projects on our agenda, armed with a focused strategy, Downtown Bernardsville utilizes Main Street America's 4-Point Approach (MainStreet.org). This approach defines each project in the areas of organization, design, promotion, and economic structuring. Here's a super brief overview of what these 4 points are.

(referred to as the Downtown Community Alliance). If you want to have a say in the future of our business landscape, this is your chance. PROMOTION positions the downtown or commercial district as the center of the community and hub of economic activity, while creating a positive image that showcases our community's unique characteristics. ORGANIZATION involves creating a strong foundation for a sustainable revitalization effort, including cultivating partnerships, community involvement, and resources for the district. Each of these 4 points, will be the framework of a new committee launching in 2020. Beginning in January, everyone in our community will have an opportunity to join in the effort and give back to Bernardsville. The path toward revitalization is right here. If you own a business in Bernardsville, consider joining our economic vitality committee
Residents could consider joining the design committee, focusing on creating useable open spaces and setting up grants for property owners and businesses to enhance their building facades and storefronts. If you are all about planning events, jump on the promotions committee, help us develop fundraising opportunities and make our annual events better year after year. If you like to be out in the community and advocate for Downtown Bernardsville's mission, the organization committee is the place for you. Wherever you choose to help, there is a place for everyone to help make a difference in Bernardsville. We no longer need to reinvent the wheel, the solution is here and you can be a part of it.

TECHY TECH GUIDE Smart Home Gifts that Keep on Giving Powered by Wavelength Audio Video
Fun little trinkets, kooky niknaks and techy gizmos can be some of the most fun gifts to give to our loved ones during the holiday season. In this guide we will roll through a handful of notable and worthy smart home gifts for 2019.
LUTRON CASETA LIGHTING KIT Flipping a light switch has gotten a whole lot cooler with this easy to set up kit from Lutron. We have found that the best switches to target first for smart controls start with the outside lights. You can automate dawn and dusk settings easily without the use of an old school timer. Next on the list are the lights that get left on accidentally, such as closets and main living spaces, like family rooms and kitchens. Switch them all off at the touch of a button! Plus, creating a comfortable light scene is only a few steps away. APPLE TV If you are looking for a great way to access your Apple music, photos, movies, and so much more, then look no further than the 4K AppleTV. With Siri, Airplay2, and some very cool gaming options from Apple Arcade this video streaming device makes a great gift for the Apple lover.

STAY FIT, KEEP IT HEALTHY
8 HEALTHFUL HOLIDAY TIPS BY JENNIFER MORRISON CPT, Provider of In-home Personal Training
The holiday season is one of my favorite times of the year. The family and social gatherings, the decorations and music, and the delicious food we enjoy truly make it magical. With all the positives can also come added stress, lack of sleep, over-indulgence and unwanted weight gain. By Jan. 1, we’re feeling exhausted, defeated and determined to keep our resolution to diet and exercise daily. Then reality sets in and we realize
it is February and we’re still struggling to shed that unwanted weight. Instead of waiting for the New Year, let’s make a change, right now. Read on for eight healthful holiday tips to help you maintain and not gain. Jennifer Morrison Certified Personal Trainer Owner, MSBH Fitness & Wellness (908) 381-8150 @MSBHFitWell

Keep Exercising If you’re currently following an exercise routine, keep going. Don’t let evening and after work functions keep you from exercising. Try to commit to another time of the day — either in the morning before your day begins or during your lunch hour. You want to keep burning those calories on a daily basis. If you’re not currently exercising or following a program, try walking daily. Studies show that adding just 10 minutes of exercise or movement can benefit your health. If you’re not able to complete a continuous 30 minute walk, break it up into three 10-minute intervals as many days as you can. Need more guidance on where to begin? Email Jennifer@msbhfitwell.com to get on track.
Remain Hydrated Drink your water! Experts recommend consuming at least six to eight 8-ounce glasses per day. If you’re consuming alcohol, opt for lower calorie beverages such as beer or wine. Avoid things made with cream like Eggnog and White Russians or excessive sugar like a Hot Buttered Rum. A good rule of thumb for alcohol consumption is a 1:1 ratio: one glass of wine per one glass of water. Also, never consume alcohol on an empty stomach. This can lead to over eating as alcohol increases hunger.
Keep Hunger In Check If you’re planning a night out or holiday dinner, make sure you consume a healthy breakfast and a lighter lunch. Skipping meals with the idea of saving calories can back fire and lead to over eating because you’re so hungry. Having a small snack before the event can curb your appetite and help prevent over eating. A handful of nuts, a piece of cheese with fruit, an apple with peanut butter — something with a balance of fats, proteins and carbs will help keep your hunger in check.
Make a Contribution If you’re headed to a holiday party or dinner, offer to bring a healthy dish like a salad, steamed vegetables or fruit bowl. At least you know there will be one nutritious option.
26
www.DowntownBernardsville.com
Eat • Play • Shop Bernardsville
Choose Wisely My recommendation is to try to cover half of your plate with available vegetables and fruit. I typically build my salad in the center of the plate and top it with lean protein (like turkey, chicken, fish or Tofu). I then fill the outskirts of the plate with a taste of the extras like stuffing, candied yams, potatoes, cranberry sauce… all the unhealthy goodies that make dinner so delicious. This allows you to fill up on the nutrient-dense food and still enjoy the “good” stuff without over eating.
Leave Room for Dessert Holiday parties and dinners often end with delicious desserts and tasty treats. Instead of filling up on seconds and even thirds, leave yourself room for that piece of pie. It takes about 10 minutes for your body to realize it’s full, so pause and have a glass of water before you reach for a second helping of mashed potatoes and gravy. You want to feel satisfied and not stuffed.
Avoid Stressful Eating Situations Food pushers can lead to unwanted stress and over eating. These are the people who have a hard time understanding your lifestyle and don’t take “no thank you” for an answer. They become insulted, encourage you to eat more or try this… which can make for a very uncomfortable satiation. Politely refuse, excuse yourself and be confident in your journey and decision.
Have Fun If you do wind up over indulging, remember: it’s just one day! Enjoy that time with family and friends and move on. Tomorrow is a new day and the journey can continue. One night of off-course eating isn’t going to ruin your progress. It’s when we continually allow for over eating, less exercise, or no exercise at all that we start see the unwanted effects. Try implementing these healthful holiday tips to maintain and not gain.

HOST LIKE A PRO Holiday parties, family gatherings, cocktail parties with friends are just a few of the insane amount of events going on throughout December. Whatever you're hosting, staying organized ahead of time is key to making it easier. You don't need a slew of how to guides to get you through. These are my top 3 life savers when planning any event. BY OLIVIA MANNING Event Planner & Marketing Pro
PANTRY STOCK UP There's nothing worse than working through your recipe and discovering you're short on a key ingredient. Set a date early in the season (mine is November 1!) and stock up on all of your holiday pantry essentials. Buy freezable perishables, like butter early and keep things like eggs on your last minute list. Save time and peace of mind.
KEEP A HOLIDAY BINDER
CUT THE RIGHT CORNERS
Every event I plan has its own 1/2 inch binder that houses ideas, lists, plans, schedules, and any other key info I need for the event we're planning. This helps keep all of your details in one place, while managing lists and keeping loose materials secure. Sure, you could go digital, but there's something about the old fashioned way that makes this effective.
Making things from scratch is always super important to me, but there are some battles just not worth fighting. If you absolutely can't stand canned cranberry sauce, but your local supermarket makes the most delicious pie, buy the pie and make the sauce. Don't go overboard making every single thing. And ask for help whenever possible.
