Hues of Kutch This issue, let's look at Lac-turned-wood craft porn the villages of Kutch. This craft is largely done by a community called Wadha (which translates to 'One who works with wood' ).

The wood is sourced from local babul or neem tree and is chiselled in a simple self-made lathe. made of wood and a shing OPerated by hand. The lathe is turned with the lac to get the desired base colour. On top of this, the artisan adds layers of colours to get various designs. Lac is obtained from sap of Rhus tree, heated and mixed with groundnut oil to form a thick, opaque paste. Colours are obtained naturally, for instance: black by burning thor-ka-ped, lemon yellow from haldi, blue from neem leaf & castor oil etc. Zishta boasts of such traditionally-made kitchen accessories.

Placing the 'metti' on the bride's toe symbolizes the groom placing the respect of h s family under her feet and she has to take care of it throughout her life. A scientific theory proposes that wearing toe ring on the 2nd toe strengthens the uterus keeping it healthy by regulating the blood flow and regularizing the menstrual cycle. As Silver is a good conductor, it also absorbs polar energies from the earth and passes it to the body.

The 'Kanyadanam' or 'Dhaarai Vaarthu Kodukkal' (in Tamil) ritual is a gesture of giving away the bride. She places her palms holding a coconut on her father's palms, milk is poured over the bride's hands as the groom receives her hand from her father.

Just before the wedding, the bride and the groom are asked to sit on a wooden plank swing and are offered a mixture of bananas dipped in milk. Referred to as 'Paalum Pazhamum', the tradition is basically to ease their tensions of the marriage and make them comfortable.

Parry's of Chennai This February, we take you down the lanes of Parry's. Though not romantic like the Paris in France, this locality in North Chennai has a fascinating flashback. It was 1911 and King George V had just been crowned emperor of Colonial India so the area in and around Muthialpet was renamed as George Town by the British in his honour. Today, it is known by several names like Broadway, named after a main road or Parry's (after Parry, one of the oldest running businesses in Chennai that houses a building). Much before that, it has been recorded that the first settlement of the city of Madras began here in 1640, near the fort St George. As the native people settled here, it was called Black town by the British. Slowly, the township grew and in the early 18th century, the weavers settled in nearby Chmtadripet and washermen in washermen pet, with potters to the North side in Kosapet. Today, the area still boasts of large commercial establishments and Government offices housed in heritage buildings. The area around Mint street is also hugely popular for its tantalising street food.

Shake a leg Kokkalikattai attam Across the world, stilt performers have caught our attention with their acrobatic acts. Tamil Nadu too has an unique folk art form performed on stilts. The performers wear tall poles (upto 5 feet) that resemble the legs of egret (kokku in Tamil), the dance itself has been named after this commonly found bird in Tamil Nadu . The art is normally a group performance accompanied with percussion instruments. Wearing colourful costumes and tall hats, these performers enthral the audience with their graceful moves. Popular in the Vellore district of TN, this dance is usually performed only during temple fests as a representation of Goddess Durga stomping on poisonous creatures with wooden legs. Now, this ancient dance form can be seen in cultural events too.
