The Botanical Garden was developed in 1826 to understand the ecology of various flora of Pondicherry.
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual sojourn located in the heart of Puducherry. The ashram is believed to have blossomed out of a small community of disciples that Sri Aurobindo had after he retired. On 24 November 1926, Sri Aurobindo withdrew completely from public life to focus on his inner self. It was then that he handed over the full responsibility of the ashram to his spiritual collaborator Mirra Alfassa popularly known as “The Mother”. As for the Ashram, Sri Aurobindo himself noted, “less been created than grown around him as its centre.”

Arikamedu, a coastal fishing village ( nearly 4 kilometres from Puducherry), was originally a French colonial town. Archaeological excavations were done there in 1947–1950. The explorations led to the findings of several artifacts including Arretine ware, Roman lamps, glassware, glass and stone beads, and gems at the site. Based on these excavations, it was concluded that Arikamedu was a trading post that had trading connections with Rome and had flourished for about two hundred years—from the late first century BCE to the first and second centuries CE.

Sri Manakula vinayagar
The ethereal Botanical Garden (Jardin Botanique) has close to 1500 plant varieties, divided into 30 sections across the garden. The fossil plants are unique to Pondicherry Botanical Garden. Hosting hundreds of endangered native species, the Botanical Garden of Pondicherry is a paradise for nature lovers.
The Meerapalli mosque is one of the most revered pilgrimage spots for Muslims. The 350-year-old mosque is the second oldest mosque in Puducherry. The Acrot Nawab built this sacred structure in the 18th century. Showcasing the Gothic Islamic style of architecture, its serene style brings peace to any visitor. Right by the Meerapalli mosque is the grave of its founder Meeran. The original mosque has withstood the test of time and stands tall despite the natural ravages it has faced.

The 500-year-old Manakula Vinayagar Temple is one of the famous Dravidian-styled ancient temples in the city dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Standing near Promenade Beach in Pondicherry, The Manakula Vinayagar Temple gets its name from Manal meaning sand and Kulam meaning pond. The temple elephant is another huge attraction of this divine destination.
One can hardly miss the pristine Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Mission street in the heart of Puducherry. The 300-yearold church stands tall sporting a beautiful white and blue color scheme with golden accents coupled with a mix of Herrian, French, Portuguese style architecture. The first Church was built in 1689 and has since been destroyed thrice. The current structure has a gorgeous central aisle complete with golden pillars and blue-tinted ceilings reflecting the life history of Jesus Christ.

Pondicherry Lighthouse serves the practical purpose of guiding passing ships in the night. But it also happens to be a popular spot that gives an eagle view of Pondicherry. It also happens to be a great spot to catch sunsets. The city is home to two lighthouses. The old lighthouse in Pondicherry was built in 1836 and was active till the new lighthouse structure was setup in 1971. While the older version has been converted into a museum, the current lighthouse doubles up as a viewpoint for tourists.

It is no news that the marine coral reefs have been facing a lot of damage. There is a lot of destruction owing to our fishing practices, boat anchors, quarrying amongst other reasons. Uma was a practical stranger to this world until one day her son gifted her a scuba diving course. Once she took it up, there was no turning back, she fell in love with the deep blue waters and its treasures. Soon enough, she saw the way

Though she has been diving for years, she feels that every dive is a new experience, “For instance, while I was diving in a coral nursery in Maldives, I saw a reef shark. It was 10 metres away from me. I can’t express how happy I was. It felt like I’d seen a celebrity.” She enlightens us that though many people have the wrong notion that sharks are harmful, it isn’t true. “Diving in a place where we do not threaten the water animals is a safe and responsible dive,” she adds.

Re-calling yet another ‘celebrity’ encounter, Uma shares, “There was a time when I was diving with a turtle. While my dive master was clicking some pictures of our surroundings, I saw something very big near his feet and it happened to be a turtle. At first, it looked like a rock . When I saw it moving, I asked my dive master in sign language about it and he said it was a baby sea turtle. We were astounded to see it and followed it right until it went up the horizon. It was a beautiful experience.”

Sowmya Balasubramaniam, social SowmyaentrepreneurBalasubramaniam from Kanjikoil is another eco traveller who has chosen a unique career in seed keeping. Sowmya initially opted for engineering. But after a brief stint in IT, she realised her calling lay elsewhere. Born in an agricultural family, she knew how important seed keeping is for the future. She starting her own journey in seed keeping with the Himalayan farmers , “I worked with a grass-root organisation, INHERE, which is an institute for Himalayan environmental research and education. This organisation works with farmers at grass-root level. It’s a mere 100 km away from Colbert National Park. I worked with them for a year. It was a beautiful experience.”

While our other two conservationists work with the treasures of the sea and soil, this young researcher has her sights on the sky above.
Back home in Tamil Nadu, she started her own organisation called Hooga to work towards seed conservation. The institution works with local, tribal region, home gardeners who are beginners /want to start growing native vegetables. Of course, she loves the seed yatras/ journeys they embark to find rare seeds. Having travelled across several states like Tamilnadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Haryana, and Pondicherry, nds that the surprises never cease and she observes that often villagers celebrate festivals that are aligned with nature. She also ends up raiding various village markets for unique vegetables – while some vegetables can only be found in one region, there are others which have been grown by only one local family for generations. From black carrots to giant ridge gourds, she has found her treasures in the remotest of villages.

Seeds that are big (bottle gourd, pumpkin) have a different process compared to small seeds. that is common in all the houses today, the seed keeping process is quite unique. The vegetable is left in the plant to dry itself. When the vegetable is dried, you’ll notice a very thin line crack in between where the seed is visible. As every vegetable and fruits have different processes, one simple way is mixing any native cow dung in water. Once done, dip the seeds inside and leave it for 15/20 minutes. Then you can keep it aside, let it dry and later store them.

Her work involves studying the mass mortality of birds and working towards preventing the same. She has travelled across various Indian states like Odisha, Andhra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu to understand how metal contamination or pesticides contribute to the death of various birds. For a person who had very little knowledge about birds when she joined SACON in 2011, learning literally happened in the fields (or lakes).
And for travellers who encounter the wild, she has but one advice: listen to the locals. They know the place and its challenges better.

Though working towards conservation, her work often entails her to see the worst. “I remember going to the Nalbana bird sanctuary in Odisha and being aghast at what we saw. I recalled reading about King Ashoka’s reaction to seeing his first war field at Kalinga, as the smell of death and sight of blood overwhelmed him. Nalbana was our Kalinga. We saw countless bodies of dead birds floating on the large expanse of water. And as we were on a clock, I ended up doing post-mortem right on the boat even as the high waves threatened to devour us any minute.”
There were other times when real conflicts surrounded them, “Once, one of my teammates had unwittingly worn a camouflage suit in a district that was ridden with maoist activities and it was only days back, four men were killed in the exact same location. Locals said that the camouflage suit would make us a possible target. We were quickly whisked off as soon as the samples were taken.” Despite her challenges, it is the hope that her research helps in saving lives that keeps her going.
