BUT WITH YOU IN MIND

It’s almost a given that a hotel will make some claim of localism (we don’t think stocking the minibar with regional craft beer really counts). These properties, however, are implementing more considered collaborations that actually resonate with the guests.

Those colorful oil canvases and ceramic mugs you’re sipping coffee from (even the staff’s name tags and bracelets) come from the 81-year-old art collective Cattle Track, down the road.

klahoma City is a frontier town, home to the proverbial Western hero. The pulse of contemporary OKC still beats for the salt of the earth and working class, and there’s something artistic about that, as demonstrated by the new 21c Museum Hotel. A rehabilitation project that transformed the historic Ford Motor Company Assembly Plant into a 135-room boutique hotel, 21c offers 14,000 square feet of art-exhibition space open to the public for free, as well as Mary Eddy’s Kitchen x Lounge, the local toast of the OKC culinary scene that serves American contemporary cuisine in a renovated industrial setting. Built in 1916 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building still has its original casement windows, the former Model T showroom’s original terrazzo floor, entry canopy and marquee. Rates start at $219. 21CMUSEUMHOTELS.COM —ADAM PITLUK

s you stand on your private terrace at the Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Spa, art and nature collide in spectacular fashion around the 23-acre property. With the rugged Camelback Mountain in the distance, the 201 bungalow-style guest rooms boast brilliant pops of color and graphic patterns representative of artists Alexander Girard, Frank Lloyd Wright and Paolo Soleri. Rooms and common spaces feature works from the resident artists at Cattle Track Art Compound, a short walk from the resort. As part of a partnership between Cattle Track and the Andaz, guests can sign up for lectures, exhibitions, live performances and workshops at the resort — including pottery and landscape photography — as part of the Artist in Residence program. hen you decide to open a hotel in a town that boasts one of the largest permanent installations of contemporary art in the world, you’re undoubtedly faced with a conundrum: Do you embrace the art connection or ignore it for fear of not getting it quite right? Fortunately for visitors to Hotel Saint George in Marfa, Texas, owner Tim Crowley opted for the former by installing the works of more than two dozen artists in the rooms and public spaces. Artwork by part-time resident Christopher Wool (whose painting “Untitled [Riot]” sold for $29.9 million at Sotheby’s last year) hangs in LaVenture, the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant. A diptych by Michael Phelan welcomes guests with the lyrics from Neil Young’s song “Fade to Black.” And the best part? The lobby bar is the new artist hangout. Rooms start at $195. The Mayakoba development, which emphasizes sustainability and is home to Rosewood, Fairmont and Banyan Tree hotels, added a 214-room Andaz Resort in December. The all-inclusive, family-friendly Ocean Riviera Paradise also opened in December. The all-inclusive, adults-only Unico Riviera Maya, south of Playa del Carmen, is to open in March. San Francisco Here comes the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love, and San Francisco ventures such as the Magic Bus (which does ’60s-themed local tours), San Francisco Love Tours (which uses VW buses with psychedelic paint jobs) and Flower Power Walking Tours will make the most of that in HaightAshbury and beyond. Find Jimi Hendrix’s old place at 1524A Haight St. (the apartment, above a tobacco shop, is a private residence) and the North Beach coffee shop where Janis Joplin did some singing. Now it’s Maggie McGarry’s Irish Pub, and there’s more singing than ever. Various street fairs are in the works, including one in Haight-Ashbury in June (details TBA), and ’60s-themed exhibitions are planned at the California Historical Society, the De Young Museum, the Berkeley Art Museum and San Francisco City Hall. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art will still be celebrating its May 2016 expansion. Info: San Francisco Travel, www.sftravel .com

Seoul This South Korean capital city on the Han River is as urban as they come with a population of about 10 million, but it’s been renewing its natural connections. Explore the Cheonggyecheon, a sevenmile-long restored urban stream that replaced an elevated highway and acts as a linear park through the center of the city. In late 2017, the Seoul Skygarden, an urban overpass replanted with local plant species, will reopen for pedestrians, creating an arboretum above the Seoul Station transportation center. Visit soon and you’ll beat the crowds expected for the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang (80 miles east of Seoul) Feb. 9 to 25, 2018. Info: Visit Seoul, english.visitseoul.net

Slovenia Slovenia, part of Yugoslavia until the 1990s, has been gaining momentum for years. The site of bloody conflict during both world wars, it’s now a treasure-trove of scenery. Its capital, Ljubljana, is just two hours’ drive from Italy’s Friuli wine region. Bike tour company Backroads has added a 2017 tour that combines Slovenia and Friuli. Ljubljana is a short drive to placid Lake Bled and the Soca River Valley — lots of cycling and rafting — and the cave system of Postojna, about 30 miles southwest of Ljubljana. Postojna is also the beginning of the Via Dinarica, a recently developed mountain hiking trail that runs through several western Balkan nations. Many adventure tour operators now are running Slovenian trips. Info: Slovenian Tourist Board, www.slovenia.info

Tanzania Why see Tanzania? We need not say more than: 8 Serengeti, a national park with some of Africa’s most impressive wildlife; 8 Ngorongoro, a crater with some of the most spectacular views on the continent, and Kilimanjaro, the 19,341-foot mountain that is Africa’s highest point; 8 The Highlands, a safari camp north of the crater on the slopes of Olmoti volcano that opened in 2016 with eight domed tentsuites of canvas and glass; 8 Jabali Ridge, a fancier 10-unit camp from the same company (Asilia), due to open in September in the larger but less-trafficked Ruaha National Park. Todos Santos, Baja California Todos Santos is an artsy, expat-friendly beach town an hour’s drive north of Cabo San Lucas. The quaint restaurants, shops and uncrowded rough-water beaches are enough to attract visitors, especially surfers. If you’re a growth-friendly optimist, you may be eager to see the first signs of Tres Santos, an ambitious new resort and wellness community whose short-term plans include 29 residences, restaurant, farm, farmers’ market, desalination plant and the 32-room Hotel San Cristóbal, which aims to open in March. If you’re a skeptic, you might have doubts about the project’s water use, its effect on the beach, its potential to grow to more than 4,000 units — and you might be eager to see Todos Santos before there are too many changes. HONG KONG will have more than a dozen hotels opening during the new year. It

has been almost 20 years since Britain handed over its former colony to China.

It’s a short hop from big-city Vancouver, yet the island’s wild feel is drawing adventurous travelers to the Clayoquot Wilderness Resort (open mid-May through late September) and the Free Spirit Spheres treehouses (near Qualicum Beach), which hopes to add a fourth sphere in time for summer. In the resort town of Tofino, which has become a storm-watching destination from November through March (and was named Sunset magazine’s “Best Beach town in the West” for 2016), there’s the much-praised Wolf in the Fog restaurant; Sea Monster Noodle Bar; Calypso Roti Shop; and the Pacific Sands Beach Resort, whose 77 beach houses and suites will be joined by 40 new units this spring. Does L.A. really need more hotels? Ready or not, two Kimptons, a Waldorf Astoria, hipster hotels in downtown L.A. and more are set to open this year in Southern California. Consider: Tourism in 2016 is estimated to have brought a record 47.3 million visitors and 81% hotel occupancy to L.A., according to the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board. The county is expected to add almost 6,000 new hotel rooms this year and an additional 2,300 rooms by 2019. Here are some hotel openings to look out for in 2017 — and some you may have missed. Dream Los Angeles | Hollywood (March) The Dream hotel at 6417 Selma Ave. in Hollywood is the first West Coast location for the brand. The building claims a “Neutra-inspired” design for the building with 179 rooms and a rooftop pool and lounge. Keyless entry, in-room tablet and free Wi-Fi are tech perks included in the price. Reservations start March 1. Info: Dream Los Angeles | Hollywood, (323) 844-6417 Freehand (mid-March) This hotel and hostel brand that Travel + Leisure calls “ultra cool, ultra hip” already exists in Miami, Chicago and New York. It plans to open in the Commercial Exchange Building at the corner of 8th and Olive streets in downtown L.A. Reservations are open starting March 15, and there are room options aplenty, like a basic king-sized room, a loft suite or a shared room. The Broken Shaker rooftop

bar makes cocktails and elixirs, and the Exchange restaurant promises to bring together L.A.’s cultural cuisines “through an Israeli lens.” Info: Freehand, (213) 612-0021 The Everly (April)

Boutique brand Kimpton Hotels comes to the city in a big way in 2017. In Southern California, it already operates the Hotel Palomar Los Angeles Beverly Hills and Hotel Wilshire (known for its rooftop pool and the Roof restaurant), both in L.A. Now it adds the Everly at 1800 Argyle Ave. in Hollywood, which is set to open in April. It will have 216 rooms, including 12 suites. In a release, the brand describes the hotel’s vibe as “a true celebration of its Beachwood Canyon neighborhood and the laid-back California lifestyle.” The fifth-floor pool deck might become one of those above-it-all L.A. hangouts. Another DTLA hotel expected to join the lineup is Hotel Indigo located at 899 Francisco St. The hip boutique brand owned by InterContinental Hotel Group strives to deliver an authentic urban experience in whatever city you’re in. Local experiences and design drives the decor at this 350-room site, according to the website. Reservations accepted starting April 15. Info: Hotel Indigo, (877) 8463446 La Peer Hotel (May) ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! The brand’s second hotel to open this year will be the Kimpton La Peer at 627 La Peer Drive in West Hollywood. It will have 105 rooms and suites and a 3,900-square-foot roof deck, pool and fitness center, and more. Expect a cooler, metallic look here — a front desk sculpted from aluminum and a “leather cocoon wall” in the lobby.
