PANDOLABS TO MODERATE ENTREPRENEURSHIP TALKS The nonprofit for entrepreneurship PandoLabs is partnering with Park City Summit County Arts Council and BRANDed PC to host entrepreneurial panel talks on Dec. 20 and Dec. 21. According to a PandoLabs’ newsletter, PandoLabs will be moderating a talk titled “The State of Retail” on Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. and another talk titled “Growing your Business” on Friday from 5 to 6 p.m. BRANDed PC and accompanying panel talks are set to take place at the Rockwell Room.

AMERICANS EXPECTED TO TRAVEL IN RECORD DIGITS According to a report from AAA, onethird of Americans will be traveling this holiday season. AAA projects that 112.5 million Americans will be traveling in cars or planes during the holidays, which is a 4.4 percent increase from last year and the most since AAA started tracking holiday travel. “This is projected to be the busiest holiday travel season in our country’s history,” said Michael Blasky, spokesperson for AAA Utah, in the report. “There will be almost 5 million more people traveling in 2018 compared with last year.” The majority of people are expected to hit the road between Dec. 22 and Jan. 1.

Hospitality leader carved out a role for himself He has headed hotels around the U.S. and England for decades CAROLYN WEBBER ALDER The Park Record Working in the hospitality industry has always brought Todd Shallan a significant amount of joy. He thrives in the unpredictable days, the slew of challenges that are difficult to avoid and the near-constant opportunities to improve a guest’s experience through small actions. It is what has kept him hooked on the business for the past 35 years, and why he is eager to become the new president and chief operating officer of Deer Valley Resort. Shallan is replacing longtime Deer Valley figure Bob Wheaton, who will officially step into a role as senior strategic advisor for Alterra Mountain Company in January. Alterra is the parent company of Deer Valley Resort. The new Deer Valley leader has 19 years of experience with KSL Capital Partners, one of the entities that formed Alterra Mountain Company. He worked at resorts and hotels owned by the management company from San Diego to London. Shallan got into the hotel and restaurant business as a 15-year-old boy in Pittsburgh. He worked as a prep cook, line cook and banquet cook at the management company Interstate Hotels. He grew to like the work, so he decided to pursue it as a career and attend a school

for hotel management. His education led him to an eightmonth internship in San Francisco, where he fell in love with what he said was an “international, cosmopolitan city.” Once he graduated, he returned to the Bay Area to work at Westin Hotels and Resorts and fell in love again, this time with his future wife. He hopped between jobs in Palm Springs, California; Boca Raton, Florida; and Phoenix before returning to
the San Francisco area, all while rising through the ranks and starting a family of two kids. He was the general manager of a hotel in Berkeley, California. He continued to travel for new positions, working as general manager of a beach resort in San Diego for 10 years and then moving to London to oversee several hotels in the area. His most recent position was chief operating officer of an indoor skydiving facility in Austin, Texas.
But he was ready to get back into an operating role, he said. In London, he felt removed from the hotels he was overseeing and in Austin, he missed working with guests. Montage International is bringing another resort to Park City. Pendry Residences Park City, a luxury condominium development, is set to go up at the base of the Canyons Village side of Park City Mountain Resort. Construction is set to start in the summer with a completion goal of winter 2021. Buyers are expected to start reserving
rooms in February. The condominiums will be managed under Montage International’s new Pendry brand, which has locations in San Diego and Baltimore. The developer for the project, Brian Shirken, is president of the national real estate development and investment company Columbus Pacific, which has worked

Pendry condos Pendry Residences is expected to include 200,000 square feet of livable space in the center of Canyons Village, wedged between the Hyatt Centric Park City, Sunrise Lodge by Hilton Grand Vacations and Sundial Lodge. Another 40,000 square feet will be dedicated to retail space on the plaza level. The lot is currently used as a parking lot. Shirken began conceiving ideas for condominium projects in Canyons Village when he saw the development plans for the area about five years ago. He said he became “mesmerized” by the amount of potential in the area. He worked on the Apex Park City Residences, a 63-unit condominium project, but was eager to do more. He then acquired the property for the future Pendry Residences two years ago, and has been working on the plans ever since. “What we felt the Canyons was lacking were high-end amenities — restaurants, shops and also a high-end residential experience for transient guests — so we wanted to do a project

In Shirken’s search for a resort management company to help him accomplish his goal, he became acquainted with Montage International’s Pendry brand. Shirken said he chose the Pendry brand because of Montage’s reputation for high quality service and Pendry’s willingness to create a contemporary product that fits into the environment. Michael Fuertsman, co-founder and creative director of Pendry Hotels, said Pendry aims to build unique hotels and condominiums rather than cookie-cutter buildings. “You should feel Park City, you should feel mountain living, while you are here,” he said. He said Pendry Residences will have plenty of glass and steel to give it a modern aesthetic and disrupt the traditional resort style.
The Pendry brand launched four years ago to give a contemporary spin to luxury hotels. The development is set to include 150 condominium units, which range from studios to four-bedroom penthouses, Shirken said. He expects that the majority of the owners — who will likely be second-home owners — will be placing their units into the rental pool, which Pendry will help manage. Pendry Residences is also set to have five restaurants, multiple retail shops, a rooftop pool, a spa, a kid’s club, a recreation room and some bars, including one in a yurt. A large convention space will be available for conferences. Shirken hopes the amenities attract visitors from neighboring hotels as well as locals. “We’re trying to create a variety of retailers and restaurants that will be exciting and interesting for the residents of Park City,” he said.

Before opening day earlier this month, he witnessed the work that goes into opening a ski resort, which he said was impressive. “There are 2,600-2,700 people who work here that are a fantastic group of people. To be associated and have the ability to be the person in the leadership role, that is a one-of-a-kind job,” he said. “I’m pretty excited to be a part of that family.” He said it is nice to be leading a resort that is already running well, but believes there is room for improvement. The resort plans to improve its technology in the coming years, including
the installation of wireless scanning technology gates to check passes at the ski lifts next season. He said the après-ski experience could be enhanced by adding more dining options at the base of the resort, for example. Shallan is also aware of the difficulty Deer Valley Resort employees have in finding seasonal housing, and he said the resort is continuing to look for options to house its workers. It currently has about 400 beds for its employees. Coming from a hospitality background, he is most excited to get back to Deer Valley’s hospitality roots, continuing to improve the service that has won the resort awards for several years.

An architectural firm based in San Francisco plays a crucial role reshaping a blossoming community in one of the country’s premier skiing and outdoor excursion destinations. SB Architects conceptualized the three buildings that will form the Pendry Residences Park City, a 150-unit hotel condominium developed by Columbus Pacific that’s set to open late in 2021. Though known worldwide as a ski destination, Park City, Utah, truly shines during the summer, said Brian Shirken, president and co-founder of Columbus Pacific. “Like others, I discovered Utah as a skiing destination, but I fell in love with Park City as a summer destination. There’s mountain biking, whitewater rafting, fishing, water skiing, golf; you name it, it exists there,” he said. “And the weather during the summer is mid-70s with no humidity.” Where: Pendry Residences Park City, Canyons Village, Utah. But interested buyers might need to act quickly.
