Wellness through Science For those of us not in the scientific world, the most we know about particle physics is what we learned from watching the popular show, “The Big Bang Theory.” Yet, applications of particle physics are all around us, from the ink on cereal boxes, to the silicon chip that runs your smartphone, and even the treatment of cancer. Home to one of the leading international laboratories for particle physics - Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) - DuPage County is a destination for top minds in science from around the world and where proton therapy for cancer treatment became a reality. Proton therapy is a form of radiation therapy, but differs from standard radiation in that much of the dose is directly released into, and conforms to the shape of, the tumor, reducing damage to surrounding healthy tissue; where as the dose for standard radiation continues beyond the tumor. Due to the

unique characteristics of protons, and by varying the initial energy of the beam, radiation oncologists can target tumors at different depths in the body to within a millimeter. Proton therapy is a lesser known cancer treatment due to the limited number of treatment centers across the nation. DuPage County is still considered a leader in the field. Northwestern Medicine Chicago Proton Center, located in the City of Warrenville in DuPage County, is the only proton therapy center in Illinois, and one of only a few in the Midwest.

Visiting Fermilab Visitors are welcome year-round at Fermilab’s outdoor natural areas for fishing, biking or bison watching. For more information on self-guided tours, exhibits at the Leon Lederman Science Education Center, or on their numerous events open to the public visit fnal.gov.

Urban Escapes It’s well known that spending time outdoors has a positive effect on our health – physically and mentally. Whether seeking serenity or adventure, you will find your place of restoration in DuPage County, with nearly 500 miles of recreational trails, and a myriad of classes and excursions. DuPage is your destination for a dose of nature – 365 days a year. Come see why Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve is consistently ranked among the best hiking experiences near Chicago. Waterfall Glen is one of the most ecologically impressive parcels of open space in DuPage County, if not northern Illinois. In addition to Rocky Glen waterfall, the preserve is known for Sawmill Creek Bluff overlook and DID YOU KNOW Many people over 10 miles of hiking trails assume that including unmarked foot Waterfall Glen paths. Blackwell Forest Preserve

named in honor of Seymour “Bud” Waterfall, an early president of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s Board of Commissioners.

Blackwell Forest Preserve is also a local favorite, encompassing 1,366 acres of gently rolling hilly terrain that was shaped by the Wisconsin Glacier melting over 12,000 years ago. Speaking of old, the forest preserve made paleontological history when a 13,000 year-old skeleton of a woolly mammoth was uncovered in 1977 by a Forest Preserve employee. While there aren’t woolly mammoths roaming around these days, the preserve does attract a variety of wildlife that can be seen on any given day. Plan a trip to Blackwell to experience hiking, fishing, boat rentals and more. The Morton Arboretum is a stunning natural area open year-round and many arboretum enthusiasts say the snowy season is especially blissful and may even be the arboretum’s peak season. When there’s more than four inches of snow, feel free to bring or rent snowshoes or cross-county skis to explore groomed trails through the winter wonderland.

The DuPage River is one of DuPage County’s hidden gems offering a surprisingly natural setting in the suburbs. Flowing calmly through scenic forest preserves with several easy access launch areas and continuing alongside the beautiful Downtown Naperville Riverwalk, the West Branch of the river provides a peaceful kayaking experience. If the water levels are low, or adventuring by foot is preferred, visit one of the many DuPage County forest preserves that border the river for an equally serene experience without being on the water. Whether on foot or boat, fishing is permitted along both branches of the DuPage River. Spend the day relaxing with family and friends taking part in the DuPage fishing culture. Take a detour off the Illinois Prairie Path onto the Century Trail. The Century Trail links together more than 30 forest preserves in an uninterrupted 100-mile loop bordering the county. Challenge yourself to traverse the trail and be on the lookout for each of the 11 markers that provide historical snapshots from the past 100 years.

Arts & Culture “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” – Edgar Degas

Overshadowed Theatrical Productions

Degas’ quote captures the essence of the arts - opening your heart and mind to creative expression, different perspectives, genuine interpretations of humanity, and imaginative worlds into which we can escape.

If you ask anyone who lives in Chicago, they’ll tell you that the arts and culture scene is intrinsic to Chicago’s identity, fueling the vibrancy of the city and its people. That identity and energy doesn’t stop at the city’s limits. Due to its quality of life and appreciation for the arts, DuPage County draws professional artists to live and work. Community values promote artistic growth and consumption for all ages. And the depth and breadth of our offerings are impressive.

Drury Lane Theatre & Conference Center is known for grandeur often only found in a big city…velvet chairs beckoning for a preshow cocktail; chandeliers reminiscent of bygone times; the upscale atmosphere at Lucille, a classic French American Bistro; and of course the theatre space itself. A proscenium style theatre, perfectly sized so every seat is easily one of the best seats in the house, drawing you in to the performance and advancing your experience as a patron. Their 2018-2019 season of Broadway-caliber shows include South Pacific, Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, and Mamma Mia! “From drama and comedy to fairy tales and iconic musicals, our 2018-2019 season will continue to push creative boundaries and bring these shows to life in new ways.” – Kyle DeSantis, President of Drury Lane Productions.

Travel west and take in a show at the McAninch Arts Center (MAC) at College of DuPage. The MAC’s expertly curated schedule includes theatre performances, concerts, lectures, comedy shows, music and dance programs, and special events. The outdoor Lakeside Pavillion and summer concert series is a community favorite – pull up your lawn chair, go barefoot in the grass and enjoy an evening of free music. The MAC even has its own acclaimed resident ensemble, the New Philharmonic Orchestra. The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra has been engaging the community with innovative programming and high-caliber performances since 1961. Performances go beyond orchestral masterpieces, as Music Director and Conductor Dr. Stephen Alltop and ESO performers collaborate with guest artists to create celebratory and spectacular music experiences. The 2017-2018 season featured collaborations with distinguished soloists from the world of opera, the Apollo Chorus of Chicago, and more. Mayslake Peabody Estate provides a myriad of educational and cultural opportunities including Shakespeare and other classic performances in a unique setting. So many in fact that there are three to five programs going on in the house each day. The architecturally striking Tudor Revival-style mansion provides the right ambiance to gather, learn, reflect, and indulge your creative side. Attend a lecture, concert, or an art exhibit and artist reception. Simply enjoy the mansion’s architecture and history on a docent guided tour.

From annual art shows to classes for all ages, you’re sure to find the right outlet to feed your creative side. Your soul can be lifted 365 days a year in DuPage County.
