Comforts of the As we look back on this year... we have been truly blessed with golden colors of Fall... and a Summer that was wonderful to get outside and play... As we move into the Winter Season, I have almost forgotten the many aspects that I enjoyed last year amidst such a challenging year. “The Stillness of Winter” by Barbara Mahany was a lifeline for me to remember the “Sacred Blessings of the Season.” I participated in a Zoom ladies Bible study group last winter where I met new online friends and learned to savor the abundant gifts of the Winter months. The author begins the first chapter with “December is God whispering, Please. Come. Closer. Discover abundance within. Marvel at the gifts I’ve bestowed.” This book, as well as the old Christmas hymn “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” inspired the theme of Comfort & Joy for our Holiday-Winter Issue of Discovering De Soto. Welcome guests to your new or existing home with custom-made signage by Chalk Couture™. Signage is popular in home decor–hanging on walls, displayed on tables and floors, and both inside and outside the home. Paula Rhodes is an independent designer for the direct sales company. She works out of her De Soto home and adds her own design elements, wth much thought and time added to her handcrafted creations. She has always enjoyed crafting and making things with her hands. She got started with Cricket™ vinyl transfers that she had seen on facebook. “The ease of Chalk Couture™sparked my interest,” shared Paula, a lifelong hobbyist. “My goal was to just have fun with it, but it has become a growing part-time business.” Paula has quite a collection of ideas and supplies (reusable silk-screen transfers Paula Rhodes and inks) that she has stored up over the past four years. Many contact her when Independent Designer #4644 they have seen something and want their own custom-made decor. As the weather cools, warm up soothing soups, baked cookies. The De Soto United Methodist Church has hosted their annual Fall Food and Craft Sale (pre-Covid) each October featuring handmade crafts, baked goods and the delicious homemade De Soto UMC Chicken & Wild Rice Soup. Enjoy this savory soup throughout the winter season. • 2 cups cooked chicken (set aside)* • 2 cups cooked wild rice (set aside) • Vegetables (set aside): 1 1/2 cups thin sliced carrots, 1/2 cup chopped celery, 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms, 1 onion • In large soup pot, saute chopped onion and celery in 4 T butter. Add 4 T flour to make a thick roux. • Slowly add 3 cups chicken broth to roux. Wisk tll blended. • Add thinly-sliced carrots; simmer 10 minutes till cooked • Add remaining ingredients: cooked chicken, cooked wild rice, and fresh parsley; simmer 10 minutes. • Add 2 cups half and half; simmer till warm (do not boil). Adjust consistency by adding additional chicken broth. Serve with an orange spinach salad. * Boil a whole chicken, covered, in water, with quartered onion, chopped celery leaves and carrots for 50+ minutes. Remove chicken, cool and remove all meat. Return bones to broth and simmer additional 1-2 hours till rich and flavorful. A great base also for Chicken Noodle Soup or Chicken Broth that will soothe and tackle tough colds.
Shown at left, this soothing German Milk Soup was my kids’ favorite when growing up. We came up with the name Chicken Noodle Kitty Soup (even though there is no chicken). It reminded us of a kitty sipping milk. Warm 1-2 cups of milk till almost boiling. Add very thin egg noodles (Angel-hair Nest Pasta) and add 1-2 T butter. Simmer till noodles are tender. Add 1-2 T white sugar, sweetening to taste. Let cool to serving temperature. It will make you purrrr.
Souper Bowl
Beginning in 1993, the De Soto Baptist Church has hosted their annual “Souper Bowl” which has brought comfort to many in the community. Through the years, funds have been raised for many De Soto residents, as well as ministries and organizations. Reverend Richard Copeland presents opportunities to the youth group, and they choose the recipients. “It is a learning experience for them to reach out to other people,” shared Mary Etta Copeland. “People sign up to bring soup– and there are plenty of varieties of soups.” 2022 Souper Bowl information will be posted online at: https://www.desotobaptistchurch.org The event originated in 1990 with a simple prayer, “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat.” This launched a grassroots, youth-led movement working to raise monetary donations for charities within their community.

Thank you to all who provided Thanksgiving Dinner for De Soto families.
Each year many businesses, organizations and individuals provide 100 Thanksgiving Dinner Bags to area residents in need. Also, at this time of Thanksgiving, we want to thank all of our volunteers who staff The Food Pantry throughout the year–as well as the many contributers who keep the food pantry well stocked throughout the seasons. Since 2018, Cause Coffee has been a place of comfort in downtown De Soto. It has warmed many souls who frequent the local coffee shop which provides funds for many worthwhile “causes” throughout the year.
Please note: Cause Coffee will be closed for Thanksgiving, November 25- 27 and Christmas, December 23- January 3 so our staff can enjoy time with their family and a bit of rejuvenation!

“This year has blessed us so much with real, life changing help for many lives locally and around the globe. Cause Coffee was honored to complete two water wells for impoverished villages in India. Clean water is life giving and many lives were changed through these two water wells. We also did a project for Grace Blankets, a local KC nonprofit that provides nice baby blankets for babies in the NICU of local hospitals. Currently we are collecting money for new blankets for Starfish, a local nonprofit that helps the homeless in Johnson County. During the holidays, we will be privately caring for local families who need help providing Christmas gifts for their families.” –Tara Stucky, Cause Coffee Founder

Happy Fall, De Soto! To quote the most famous of bears, Winnie the Pooh, fall is “a time of hot chocolatey mornings and toasty marshmallow evenings.” We've had the opportunity to enjoy some of those days this fall, and I’m looking forward to a few more before winter arrives.
First and Third Thursdays @ 7pm Fourth Tuesdays @ 6pm
Fall also brings the end of the “Construction Season” in which we’ve seen the completion of our roundabout and sidewalk projects. Finishing the 82nd St. sidewalk was just one more step in helping make our community more connected and more walkable. We are also looking forward to KDOT’s completion of the K-10 bridge re-decking project at Lexington Avenue, which is scheduled for completion later this month.
Second and Fourth Mondays @ 6pm SIDEWALK PROJECT 82ND ST
City Council and Planning Commission Agendas/ Minutes can be found on the City website:
We have one project still underway: a sidewalk along 83rd St. from Valley Springs to Laramie. This is a jointly funded project by the City and the developer, and it will be finished before Thanksgiving.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and a joyous holiday season! I know we each have so many things to be thankful for, not the least of which is the improved outlook regarding pandemic. In light of the improved conditions, we will be holding a live event for our annual tree lighting ceremony. I hope you will join us on Saturday, December 4th for a community celebration that kicks off the Holiday Season!

“The City of De Soto delivers big adventure and lifelong opportunities to its’ residents. Civic pride, inclusiveness, and collaboration are hallmarks of our welcoming city where responsible growth is a goal, and government is responsive, accountable, and works in the best interest of the people."
UPCOMING DEVELOPMENT ELECTION RESULTS Congratulations to the following City Council members for your reelection! The City looks forward to working with you on your vision for the future of De Soto.
Alcove Multi-Family Residential & Commercial Properties There are plans for a new office building and three multiplex apartment buildings near the intersection of Lexington Avenue and Golden Lane. The site plans and rezoning for the development have been approved by the Planning Commission and City Council.

#CITYHALLSELFIE DAY Every year there is a #CityHallSelfie Day in which people and organizations can win awards in a variety of categories for taking pictures with their city hall. Some categories include most famous person, best dressed, best hat, best use of props, and most historic. The City of De Soto staff threw our hat in the ring this year by going for as many awards we could! We would like to present the winners of the newly created 'Most Awards Attempted in One Selfie" award.
SITE PLAN MULTI-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL & COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT
Ottawa Street Reconstruction The City recently hired an engineering firm to redesign Ottawa St. from 82nd St. north to Riverfest Park; the new roadway will include curbs, gutters and sidewalks. The design will be complete around mid 2022 and will be constructed in 2023. Taco Bell Fast Food Restaurant A new Taco Bell restaurant is coming to De Soto in the lot next to Jake's Fireworks. The site plan has been approved, but building plans have not been submitted. #CITYHALLSELFIE DAY MOST AWARDS ATTEMPTED
CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PLAN De Soto is currently overhauling its 5-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). The purpose of a CIP is to identify potential capital improvement projects (i.e. streets, water/sewer, or parks), prioritize the improvements based on funding sources and the strategic needs of the city, and to estimate a timeline for each selected improvement. In its current stage, staff has provided the City Council with a list of proposed projects that each department would like to see in the adopted CIP. City Council will prioritize the list by what they believe is the most beneficial to De Soto in the next few years and provide a draft project prioritization and recommendation list. Following the holidays, the City will then seek the community's input! After we return in January, the City will host a public information session and open an online feedback form. Follow us on social media and the website to find out when and how you can be involved in providing your feedback on the vision for De Soto.

This term was credited to Dr. Levine, professor of medicine, Mayo Clinic, in an interview with the LA Times. With many employees work remotely in home offices, more sitting is done and less walking. Taking away the daily steps you walk to your car, walk to your office or walk to another department equals much less walking throughout your day. Prolonged periods of sitting are associated with high blood pressure, higher cholestral and high blood sugar according to Lerna Gillen, University of Toronto, Facility of Kinesiology. Most of us can attest to stiffness, back pain and weight gain with less movement. Interesting to also note that sitting watching TV is more detrimental than sitting while working. Gillen goes on to say, “The antidote to sitting is as simple as getting up throughout the day.” Make time for an exercise snack every half hour. Try doing various stretches in the morning. Take a short walk in the afternoon. And give your eyes a much needed screen break. There is much more pressure to your lower back sitting versus standing. Try transitioning to a standing desk. You’ll be in good company with Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Leonardo da Vinci and Winston Churchill–who all stood at their desks while doing some incredible work. –health bits of information compiled by Rose Burgweger

Hess Acres 24250 W. 83rd Street in Lenexa https://www.facebook.com/hessacres 2021 Christmas Season December 4 • 10 am to 5 pm December 5 • 12 noon to 5 pm
When George and Cathy Hess planted their first pine trees in 1991, they had no idea they would have a full-fledged Christmas Tree Farm in 2021. What began as a hobby, grew into planting 250 Christmas Trees every other year. His trees are currently sourced from tree farms in Michigan and planted as one- or two-year-old seedlings. In the beginning, George planted his trees by hand. Now, with the help of hard-working family members and a power auger, George can complete the 250-tree planting in a single weekend. According to George, when it comes to the ideal climate for growing a Christmas Tree, too dry is not good, but too wet is not good either. This year’s weather produced a good crop of trees. Trees grow approximately a foot each year and reach maturity at 7-8 feet. It takes 8-10 years to grow Christmas Trees. Most of the trees on Hess Acres are varieties of Scotch Pines. During the summer, George hires tree trimmers from Michigan to trim his substantial lot. Shaping the pines during the summer months ensures they are perfect for cutting by the holiday season. Last winter during Covid, Hess Acres was exceptionally busy because it was a familyfriendly outdoor activity, and other area tree farms were closed. Hess Acres remained open well past their typical season because, according to Cathy, “We just couldn’t say no.” Due to many trees sold last year, Hess Acres will have limited hours this 2021 season. They will be open only one weekend, December 4 and 5, with small to medium trees available. Operating Hess Acres Tree Farm brings them great joy knowing they are contributing to the holiday memories of generations of families. In addition to the running the tree farm, George is a classic car collector. His 910 Maytag is currently on display at the Kansas City Auto Museum in Olathe. Cathy, a former teacher at Mize Elementary, currently substitutes in the district. She published “On The Boards: A Race Back in Time” earlier this year–which is available on Amazon. –written by Kris Meyer, contributing writer
Christmas Tree Care Tips:
16
• Water is key! Place your fresh-cut Christmas Tree in water as soon as possible. • Water daily! Keep plenty of water in your tree stand holder and check that it does not dry up. A dry tree can quickly become a fire hazard. • If you purchase a pre-cut tree, trim off about 6 inches from the trunk to remove the sap plug, allowing your tree to soak up needed water. • Keep trees at least 3 feet away from heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators and space heaters.

Remember. Honor. Teach.
As an advocate of Wreaths Across America, Randi Cole, the current Miss United States Agriculture Queen, brought this to the De Soto community with an informative booth at the Fall Fiesta held on October 16. “Those three words are core to (the organization’s) values,” Randi emphasized. “Remember our fallen veterans, honor those who serve, and teach your children the value of freedom.” For Randi, these values are the definition of respect. As the daughter of a Vietnam combat veteran, she pointed out the importance of being respectful and remembering those who have served. Wreaths Across America is a national non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that began in 2005. Worcester Wreath Company would send wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D. C. to honor veterans. This yearly effort caught national attention when a photograph of the laid wreaths on the headstones went viral and people began their support. In 2021, Wreath Day is held on Saturday, December 18, at 11 am, in the Leavenworth National Cemetery. It begins with a full--dress ceremony honoring every branch of the military. “Leavenworth has over 36,000 laid to rest there,” Randi said. “The goal is to get every stone covered.” Working towards that goal, Randi began locally to get the word out at the Fall Fiesta in downtown De Soto. Many people took brochures, listened to Randi explain what Wreaths Across America is, and gave donations–with $220 being raised at the event. “We were there from 10 am to 3 pm and had nonstop traffic all day,” Randi recalled. It costs $15 to sponsor one wreath and makes a great family or group fundraiser. To learn more about the organization, sponsor a wreath, volunteer on Wreath Day or help retire the wreaths the third weekend in January, visit their website online: https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org

Fill a microwavable cup with water, honey and lemon to taste. Add a shot of your favorite whisky and heat in microwave. Soothes away winter colds. (Do not mix with medications and only serve to adults.) Serve without whisky for a nonalchoholic version that is also soothing. Garnish with cranberries, and lemon slices. Give any drink a Holiday twist by adding fresh Rosemary sprigs and fresh cranberries. Add seltzer water to red wine or berry juice, for a sparkling treat!

The De Soto Rotary Club Oktoberfest was held October 29 at The Barn at Kill Creek Farm serving plenty of Geman food and beer. Live music by the Merlots (with special guest musicians), provided the best in country music (with a few polkas). It was a delightful evening. Sponsored by Great American Bank and several area business table sponsors. The Barn at Kill Creek Farm 20th Barn Anniversary
was held October 30 (rescheduled from last year due to COVID-19). Free festivities included lunch, viewing farm animals, vendors, historical presentations, fiddlers, pies and treats. Plenty of cars filled the land, as many came and enjoyed the blessed day with perfect weather. The Barn stands as a testament to hard work and community support. In 2000, the White/Waltzmann Barn was relocated to Kill Creek Farm with great help from the community. After being destroyed by a tornado in 2010, the current barn was built with over 100 volunteers and community members. The barn-raising ceremony took place August 2012. Original owners Darrel and Ruth Zimmerman leased the barn and property to the community in 2010. A board of directors oversees the property.

Celebrate
in the beautiful expanse of a gambrel, custom-built barn
Located on 60 acres, StoneBriar Farm is a beautiful, spacious venue for weddings and events in Western Johnson County. Parents Ron and Lisa Vanlerberg shown at right purchased the land in 2010, and have lived on the property since fall 2019. In August 2020, Ron took on the grand project of building the 7,000 square foot barn, which was completed in October of this year. The gambrel-style barn, modeled after European-style barns, offers a great interior capacity with a 35-foot peak and massive wood-wrapped beams. Cousin Jim Lawson handcrafted the wood barn doors, custom bar and women’s makeup counter. Mom, Lisa envisioned the lighting from the lofty ceiling, custom-designed by dad, Ron. The family venture was milled around for a couple of years before beginning, and then planned to be a Vanlerberg business. Daughters Patty, Kristin and Laura shown at left make up the trio of sisters that run the StoneBriar Farm Wedding & Event Venue. Each brings areas of expertise and enthusiasm. All are married with children. “Our mantra is ‘We want to be flexible with people–your vision comes to life with our personal service,’” stated Kristin. Conveniently located off of K-10, the wedding barn seats 250275 guests comfortably, with a dance floor space. There are spacious bride and groom suites, catering prep space, and a flex room available. The outdoor ceremony area seats 250 people. An aerial video of the farmsite, pricing and amenities, photo gallery, and online tour appointments are all found on their website.

Life is short, and like countless others during the pandemic, Rhonda Burns decided to quit her previous job and pursue her passion. With two goals in mind, she and her husband sold their house in Topeka and relocated to De Soto. Rhonda wanted to be more present in her grandchildren’s lives and to open her new business, “Quilting in Kansas.” Rhonda and her husband found the perfect house located on a charming corner lot in downtown De Soto. The Burns’ renovated nearly every aspect of their home. The house was perfectly suited for quilting because of one particularly interesting space–a 20-foot-long room, ideally long enough for Rhonda’s 12-foot quilting frame. (The house had at one time been a funeral home, and the long room was likely a place where caskets were stored.) Rhonda’s passion for quilting began 25 years ago, but she’s been sewing for over 35 years, making dresses for her daughters as they grew. She tried her hand at quilting by sewing baby quilts from leftover dress material. A handsewn baby quilt took Rhonda 15-20 hours to complete. If Rhonda was going to run a successful quilting business, she knew it required the lofty purchase of a quilting frame. Delighted when she discovered the ideal frame on Craig’s list, Rhonda purchased her quilting frame and now can complete a baby quilt in around six hours! Rhonda has operated Quilting in Kansas since May 2021. She feels successful in her new endeavor, and the joy is evident in her smile as she shares about her many quilting works of art. “This is so different than my (former) job because I get done and I’m excited for the next thing I’m going to do. I get to make these beautiful, beautiful things,” Rhonda shared with a smile. Rhonda’s collection of quilted works varies from baby quilts to queen-sized quilts, t-shirt quilts, pet crate inserts (a crowd favorite), table runners, potholders, and more. Rhonda also restores quilts, often finding matching material from her numerous scraps of accumulated fabric. She attends area vendor shows and most recently, the Maple Leaf Festival in Baldwin.
Shown above top: Rhonda using her quilting frame in her 20-foot-long room and various styles of quilting patterns.
Living her best life, she and her daughter spend quality time quilting together. The heritage and comfort of quilts radiate from inside the Burns’ home. Rhonda spreads her joy of quilting by donating cozy quilts to residents of the Brewster Health Center. Quilts make a wonderful gift throughout the year. Rhonda can create a new quilt from an assortment of colors and designs, or from your own t-shirt collection. Visit her website for samples of her work, or even better, view them in person by making an appointment. https://quiltinginkansas.com phone: 785-633-2399 email: quiltinginkansas@gmail.com

Shown at left: Rhonda’s “Restoration Project.” She is pointing to one of 12 squares that were replaced. The tattered, much used quilt was the only heirloom a man had from his grandmother. With care and expertise, Rhonda brought the quilt to life, restoring the precious piece for many years to come.

Pictured below is the 1957 “Friendship Quilt” made by the De Soto Methodist Church ladies. It currently is displayed in the downtown De Soto Historical Society Building. Kathy Ross received this quilt as a birthday gift several years ago. The quilt was purchased from ebay by family, and a friend who negotiated with the seller, out of Topeka. Kathy had orginally found the listing on ebay, and then saw it was gone. It was a pleasant surprise, when she opened the heirloom gift, stitched with so many familiar names–including Dot Longstreth, who wrote “De Soto, Kansas is 100 Years Old 1857-1957.” View the quilt and other nostalgic treasures at the De Soto HIstorical Society Thursdays 10 am to 4 pm at 33055 W. 83rd Street https://facebook.com/desotokshistoricalsociety
A Heritage of Community Quilts
The Barn at Kill Creek Farm is no stranger to the inviting comfort of quilts. In fact, an 8 foot by 8 foot Barn Quilt Stencil named “Circling Barn Swallows” proudly hangs from the exterior of The Barn, located at 9200 Kill Creek Road in De Soto. Darrel Zimmerman, board member and prior owner, has a long history with a love of quilts. In 2013, Darrel wanted to add a Barn Quilt Stencil during The Barn’s rebuilding, after an 80-mph microburst had destroyed the original barn in 2010. At the time of rebuilding, a family of barn swallows roosted in the ridge of The Barn’s roof. Inspired by other local Barn Quilts, Darrel searched for the ideal quilt block. Delighted when he discovered a quilt block called “Circling Barn Swallows,” Darrel created his own Barn Quilt Stencil, which was produced by Sign Here, Inc. of Gardner, Kansas. The completed quilt block joined the Kansas Barn Quilt Trail. Barn Quilt Driving Trails are scattered across countrysides and help bring economic growth to the more remote places in each county. The concept of Barn Quilt Trails began recently in 2021, originating in Adams County, Ohio. Today, there are more than 7000 quilts on trails across the United States and Canada. View each state online at: http://barnquiltinfo.com/map-KS.html According to Darrel, an official Barn Quilt Trail Map requires the Quilt Stencil to be visible from the public roadway. Barn Trail Maps list the name, address, and GPS coordinates of the barn, and why the quilt pattern is appropriate to the property. Johnson County is currently not listed on the Barn Quilt Info Website, but is part of the Kansas heritage of quilts. The name “Circling Barn Swallows” is unique to The Barn’s mission statement: “Maintaining the rural heritage of Johnson County, Kansas.” Barn swallows are found in many parts of Johnson County. The birds build nests by attaching mud and straw to rafters, beams, and walls in farm outbuildings. Look up and you’ll find the barn swallow nest still attached to the inner ridge of The Barn’s cedar roof. The Barn also contains a unique assortment “Maintaining the of hanging quilts on its inner walls. Quilts rural heritage of such as “Sunbonnet Sue,” “Grandmother’s Johnson County, Garden,” and “Double Wedding Ring,” give Kansas” The Barn an inner beauty while serving a dual purpose. Not only do these quilts contain –The Barn at Kill Creek Farm Mission Statement a rich heritage, but these time-honored quilts also serve as sound absorption during events. While some of quilts in The Barn belonged to Darrel’s mother and grandmothers, many were donated by De Soto residents and local quilters. A book is currently being compiled of the quilts displayed at The Barn. The Barn at Kill Creek Farm recently held its 20th anniversary celebration on October 30. The Barn serves as a De Soto event space, wedding venue, and community gathering place. Thoughtfully Preparing for the Winter Season of Our Lives
As we near the end of yet another challenging year, area resident Therese McKechnie, MSW LSCSW, has compiled a collection of helpful and valuable guidance for the last season of our lives. “The Last Chapter” addresses a variety of areas to help alleviate areas of concern with planning and directives. While this is not a legal document, it is a tool to use to gather thoughts, make decisions and share information. “What would my family do if I were gone?” thought Therese, as she travelled through Europe back in 2016. “Did she tell you anything?” she envisioned her family questioning each other. “How would they find all my passwords, close out my accounts, or know my funeral wishes?” There are actually a myriad of things left for loved ones to tend to. “How would someone step into your life and assume the responsibility of paying your bills, handling health care discussions, how would they know what to do?” asks Therese in her brochure for “The Last Chapter.” “The Last Chapter” helps to guide you through the process, allowing for revisions along the way as circumstances change and thoughts clarify. Though it is not a Will, it can direct your loved ones to locate your many important documents.
Author Therese McKechnie has a private practice, Counseling Connections, that specializes in grief and loss. She has taught grief and loss courses in the School of Social Welfare at the University of Kansas since 1998. Therese presents workshops and seminars for both professional audiences and the general public.
The workbook allows you to compile your information, decisions and documents in one place. A place to have all your needed information for loved ones who are left to sort out much during a difficult time. A step by step, comprehensive workbook with a digital companion–helpful for individuals and families. Use with small group settings can provide conversaton and accountability. The workbook is available online, through the website.

Law Office of Richard Carnahan 33041 West 83rd Street, De Soto Phone: 913-583-3326 Attorney Richard Carnahan has practiced law in De Soto for over 20 years and shares insights on having a will.
Everyone has heard that a will is an essential part of an estate plan. In practice, however, many people do not know what constitutes a will and why it is needed. A will is a just legal document specifying the disposition of your probate assets that has been executed with the appropriate legal formalities. The required formalities include the witnessing of the signing of the will by two qualified witnesses. It is also recommended that a self-proving affidavit as to the identity of the witnesses and the will signer be included in the will. A will only governs the transfer of probate assets, which are assets that have no other legal mechanism to be transferred upon your death. Accordingly, property with beneficiary designations such as life insurance benefits, real estate or other property with transferon-death designations, financial accounts with payable-on-death designations, or any property held in joint tenancy pass outside of probate and are not governed by a will. Should one create a beneficiary designation for all your assets or hold them in joint tenancy and avoid a will altogether? There are several reasons this may neither be possible nor advisable. For example, beneficiary designations can’t be created for valuable personal property items that do not have a title as evidence of ownership. Without a will, these items will be subject to the legal procedure known as “intestate succession” and transferred to relatives selected by statute, and not your choosing. Among other potential complications, titling property in joint tenancy creates an immediate ownership interest in the added joint tenant that may be subject to the claims of voluntary or involuntary creditors of the added joint tenant prior to your death. Finally, without a will, parents of minor children do not have a legal mechanism to preselect a guardian or conservator for their children in the event of the parent’s death. While a will is an essential part of the estate planning process, it is by no means the only tool available. Everyone’s situation is different. Consult an estate planning attorney to determine what is best for your situation. –Richard A. Carnahan, attorney Discovering De Soto features do not constitute legal advice in any manner.

They offer a free online tool to communicate health news to family and friends–all in one place. Family and friends can stay informed without overwhelming phone calls, emails and text messages. Messages, photos and videos can be posted to update, inform and offer encouragement quickly. You control your own privacy settings. All sites are free with no online ads. Caring Bridge is supported by donations and works with an independent audit firm. They are driven by mission, not profit.
