ALL THE LIGHTS / THANKSGIVING

Light up your Holiday Table with mini-lights, Fall Gourds and classic-folded, cloth Napkins.

Exploring

Before we head into the holiday season, take time to savor the beatiful, bountiful fall. A nice assortment of colorful gourds and leaves, intertwined with a strand of mini-lights, makes an enchanting table decor.

De Soto

Add some elegance with folded cloth napkins.

The Classic Pyramid Napkin is not as hard as it might seem. Basic steps are shown at right, and you’ll find plenty of videos online showing napkin folding techniques.

• Start with a cloth napkin and fold in half horizontally • Fold each triangle corner into the center to form a square • Flip the napkin so folded seams are on the bottom side • Take top corner and fold in half • Grab the top, long side of napkin and pull up to form the “peak”

of the pyramid.

Note: Napkins can be folded and stacked ahead of time, ready to be placed on tables on the day of your event.

The inspiration for this feature was local resident Kristen Glover (DHS class of 2008), who is a server at a senior facility in Lenexa. Kristen and crew get tables ready daily for lunches and dinners. There are five crates of freshly-washed napkins, ready to be folded, that amount to 1000 classic pyramids. Quite the pro, she demonstrated the steps in our photography session.

100 guests enjoyed Oktoberfest at The Barn with delicious brats, and a great assortment of salads and sweets! It was a fun German celebration with a country twang–live local entertainment played polkas, country and rock music. Much thanks to sponsors who funded the event. The celebration raised $3200 for Shelter Box USA, which provides emergency shelters in disasters and crises. A global relief charity, which also provides support for the Syrian Refugee Crises. Commerce Park continues expanding along Commerce Drive in De Soto

De Soto

Just off the K-10 Lexington Avenue Exit is the 213-acre Corridor 10 Commerce Park. There are several manufacturers that have established themselves in this area of De Soto: Custom Foods, Engineered Air, Huhtamaki, Merck Animal Health and Rehrig Pacific Company. Our small town of De Soto can boast of these major corporations. Development continues in Commerce Park, with Hike Properties, LLC developing the 16 acres of land along Commerce Drive that was acquired in 2014 from K-10 Inc. The far west side of the property was develped in 2016, with Harps building their first Kansas location in De Soto. They provided the De Soto community with a much-needed quality grocery store. It was a venture of combined efforts by many, through a process of several years. K-Ten Place brought 122 affordable apartments with many ammenities, beginning in the summer of 2018. With a solid tenant base, it has filled a huge need for housing. Phase II, zoned for multi-family, will bring an additional 56 units for K-Ten Place and is expected to begin Spring of 2020. Sidewalks will also be constructed to provide easy walking access to and from Harps and other area businesses. Currently, driving along Commerce Drive there is a hefty amount of construction equipment and crews at work. Public roads are being constructed, and sewers/water lines are being put in for the remaining lots zoned commercial/ other. TIF Bonds will reimburse some of these costs. Performance Glass Building with rich history being Transformed to a New Outreach Church

Exploring

De Soto

De Soto, KS, 1912 population 337. One might think that little happens in a town so small, especially 107 years ago. But one would be surprised to know that De Soto at that time bragged a drug store, bank, milling (flour) company, hardware and harness, two (Coker and Taylor) mercantiles, joint furniture and undertaker, doctor, dentist, notary public, real estate sales, veterinarian, and more. The following year of 1913, a local entrepreneur by the name of B. C. Culp bought property at 2nd (now 83rd) and Wea Streets and built a very large building still standing today. Culp wanted a multi-functional building for his drug store. His store shared the floor up front with hardware and harness for Ralph Davis, and the rear was a skating rink that served also as a dance hall, and stage for plays and other programs. Eventually, it also showed movies in the back room during World War II. The huge, round-top business building at 83rd and Wea more recently was owned by Performance Glass of the Atchison family. Bob and wife Patricia co-owned the business until selling it in 2003 to yet another businessman who had a plan. Unfortunately, that plan never materialized. The building sat vacant, deteriorating through the years, diminishing its value. Lenexa Baptist Church has a history of reinforcing failing churches including Bonner Springs, Olathe and in Greenwood, Missouri. Each of them has rebounded remarkably. The deteriorating downtown structure in De Soto intrigued Lenexa Baptist to plant a church instead to lift up a suffering one. The bank that repossessed the Performance Glass building set a price, and Lenexa Baptist accepted.

Repairs and remodeling are contracted to Olathe business Strickland Construction, well known for church building. Repair work has begun, with repairing ceiling joists wanting to collapse from neglect and rain. Plans are still in the forming stage but the old skating rink will be the seating area with the stage likely in the southwest corner. Outer area most likely will be for entry, greeting, nursery, and bathrooms. Discussing the De Soto project with Jim Fruth, Executive Pastor, revealed details of the outcome projections of Lenexa Baptist. Fellowship and disciple meetings are to be encouraged with attendees. Sermons will be projected live from Lenexa Baptist most Sundays. Several applicant interviews are being conducted. Sunday School classes will be a part of the service once space limitations are resolved. Pastor Fruth emphasizes that Lenexa Baptist plans to be a service to the community. The goal for the church is to be a blessing to others in De Soto. The initial service is slated for Easter, 2020.

City of De Soto hires Communication Director for newly-created position In an effort to grow City communications and outreach, engage with citizens, and foster a positive image in the region, the City of De Soto hired Whitney Lange as the new Communications Director. Whitney joined the City Staff on September 3, 2019. “My first goal is to help communicate timely and accurate information about City activities, developments, events, maintenance, and general information to the residents of De Soto–earlier and more often–and to engage with the community on their favorite platforms,” Whitney stated of the goals she’s most eager to achieve. The City of De Soto began plans last year in 2018 to hire a dedicated communications position following the development of the 2017 Strategic Plan. One of the City’s focus areas in the plan was to increase the image of De Soto by enhancing communications with the public and marketing the City as a positively recognized name in the region. Whitney will be spearheading the City’s goals to supercharge communications and dialogue with the community. Since her hiring, multiple social media accounts have been added (see next page 12). Whitney will oversee public outreach, civic engagement, event planning, promotion, and information. Whitney said, “I would love to see De Soto grow as a known name in the Kansas City metro area and to really promote ourselves as a forward-thinking and proud community where both families and businesses call it home.” Whitney brings expertise in social media for non-profit organizations, marketing research, event planning, and has her Master of Business Administration Degree. Outside of work, she is a quilter, crafter, and an avid volunteer for the Kansas City Zoo, Starlight Theatre, and the Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri. She shared, “I grew up in a small town, so I truly value the feeling of pride and community that a smaller city provides. I’m looking forward to becoming a part of that De Soto community and using my background to help further the City in its goals!”

n Miller Park Dedication

The City formally recognized the Miller Park extension project completion with a bench dedication in October. The extension included the purchase of two pieces of property and extended the eastern boundary by approximately one acre. The project was the vision of former De Soto Mayor, Tim Maniez. The honorary bench lists the names of patrons who made the extension possible (shown above).

n City Hall Community Storm Shelter

Over the past several months, the City of De Soto has taken positive steps to transform and designate a community storm shelter within the lower-level hallway of City Hall. The City Hall building was previously used as a community shelter, but the practice was discontinued because of a lack of after-hours response availability. The tornado that tore through Linwood in May of this year drove home the need for a community storm shelter. The De Soto Planning Commission was holding their meeting at City Hall when the sirens sounded. Commissioners and City Staff took shelter in the lower level of the building, with approximately 30 residents who arrived also seeking shelter (along with three dogs and two birds). This prompted City Staff and the Council to look at reopening the shelter to the public. During the September 5th Council Meeting, the City’s Emergency Manager presented a plan which proposed the designation of the lower level of City Hall as a “Tornado Shelter.” Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and International Code Council (ICC) requirements were considered, and the ADA-access of the lower-level hallway was recommended as the “Best Available Refuge Area” in City Hall. This term means these hallways were deemed the most likely to offer the greatest safety for building occupants during a tornado event. The City Council approved the proposal. The next step is creating an entry system that would easily allow for residents to gain access into City Hall, even after hours. The City’s Emergency Manager is designing a plan, in partnership with Johnson County Emergency Management, that would allow for a “handsoff” entry system. In this scenario, if there was a tornado event after business hours, community members would still be able to easily and automatically enter the shelter without waiting for a designated entity to open the doors. Before the shelter is officially available to the public, the lower level will also need to be outfitted with signage, emergency lighting, first-aid kits, and fire extinguishers. This public service will be available in the Spring of 2020.

n 91st Street Officially Opens

The City has completed the 91st Street extension from Lexington Avenue to Sunflower Road and formally opened October 23, 2019, with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The extension, which was a project in the City’s 2019 Capital Improvement Plan, includes a multi-use recreation path, sidewalk, bike lanes, and provides direct access to businesses, residential areas, and amenities including nearby Johnson County Lexington Park.

n Emergency Operations Plan Adoption

The City of De Soto has developed and instituted an Emergency Operations Plan for disaster recovery. The 2017 City Strategic Plan determined the need for an Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Recovery Plan. The purpose of an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) is to establish a framework for the City and residents to prepare and respond to emergencies and disasters. Historically, De Soto did not have an official EOP designed specifically for the City and relied on Johnson County’s emergency plan. Over the past year, the City’s Emergency Manager Steve Chick Sr. worked with Johnson County Emergency Management to develop the plan, which is tailored to De Soto and its resources. The EOP meets all county, state, and federal requirements, which allows De Soto to receive federal reimbursement funds if applicable. City Council approved the EOP in September of 2019, which is available to view on the city website: https://www.desotoks.us/241/Emergency-Operations-Plan

Steve’s Meat Market Celebrates 40 Years!

Since September 1969, Steve’s Meat Market has provided quality meats for the De Soto community, as well as those who travel many miles for the well-known, fresh meat packs. The three-generation business began with Steve Prudden Senior, finding his passion for processing meat while working at a grocery story in Osborn, Missouri. After his service in the Army, Steve pursued his dream of opening his own neighborhood butcher shop. With his bride, Charlene, and little boy Stephen Jr. “Mitch,” the family came to De Soto and purchased the current building that established Steve’s Meat Market. For over 35 years Steve built up the neighborhood butcher shop. He served as Mayor of De Soto (1998-2001) and hosted the Kid’s Fishing Derby at Steve Prudden’s Pond for 41 years. Family members, Stephen “Mitch” Jr., Pam Prudden, and Mitch Prudden III, along with employees who continue the vision and passion of Steve’s Meat Market. Cause Coffee in De Soto has become a local oasis to enjoy carefully-crafted drinks and handmade goods. The shop’s homelike layout gives a radiance of warmth that embraces each person that walks through its door. As the year comes to an end, Cause Coffee (a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization) has lent a gracious hand in helping noteworthy humanitarian efforts with its year-round volunteer efforts worldwide and locally. “We started out the year dedicated to fighting human trafficking alongside the amazing local organization, Exodus Cry! We’ve also donated to local schools and had the privilege of doing a project for the Blind School of Kansas City,” said Tara Stucky, Cause Coffee creator. Tara and her team of volunteers went to great lengths to help people affected locally by the tornado that hit Lawrence, Eudora and Linwood area residents in late May. “...we spent the summer helping many families,” Tara said. “I was so proud of our customers for leaving [an abundant] $10,000 in our donation jar for our neighbors who were devastated by the tornado! Such heartwarming stories came from people’s generosity! Cause Coffee also had teams of people physically helping work the in areas of destruction. In fact, we are still helping families even now.” During the fall, the team globally helped a community in Honduras create a mobile coffee business, creating jobs for locals, according to Tara. Their efforts never fall short of continuing Cause Coffee’s ever-present mission of improving the lives of others. This holiday season, the coffee shop team is spreading holiday cheer by working on a project for the Kansas City area homeless community, as well as taking care of local families in need for Christmas. At Cause Coffee, Tara welcomes everyone and anyone who’s in the spirit for volunteering. “Honestly, I let people come to me,” she said. “If people really want to work at Cause Coffee, they will contact me and we always have ways to serve on a regular basis, semi-regular, or even one time. We love our volunteers!” To keep up with the latest news, specials and more, visit

This was an Eagle Scout Project for Connor (Troop #34) that was recently completed in October 2019. While brainstorming ideas, Connor found the facebook group that started “Blessing Box,” and thought this would be a good resource for our community. Food, toiletries, gloves, hats are suggested items. (Please mark out bar codes to prevent store returns.) An additional shelf will be added for clothes at the end of November. Las Posadas holds many traditions for the HIspanic Community

Exploring

December 25 is to many the most magical day of the year. In Mexico and several Latin American countries, the night before holds greater significance. The Hispanic holiday tradition is called “las posadas” (translated as “the inns”) that are religious celebrations and festivals. This nine-day celebration begins the evening of December 16 and ends on December 24, known as “Noche Buena.” Each night the community recreates the journey Mary and Joseph made from Nazareth to Bethlehem, in search of a safe refuge where Mary could give birth to the baby Jesus. During las posadas, a procession and somewhat of a play is held, mainly at churches in the local area, where children and adults sing traditional carols while holding candles in commemoration. In the carol, there are two important parts: one part of the carol is asking for shelter which is denied (symbolizing Joseph’s plea for lodging during his and Mary’s journey to Bethlehem), and the second part celebrates the welcoming into a home (Joseph and Mary finally finding shelter). At the end of the procession, a mass is held. The festivities continue after mass and dinner is provided for everyone. Adults may have a coffee or Ponche Navideño, hot punch with blends of spices. Children enjoy breaking a piñata shaped as a star symbolizing the Star of Bethlehem and receive “bolos,” considered as goody bags. There are various ways Hispanics celebrate las posadas. Some dress up; kids often are dressed as angels while two adults may be assigned to dress up as Mary and Joseph. It’s important to note that while many gather as a community, some families celebrate at home. Alejandro Lopez, De Soto resident, vividly recalls how his hometown of Huejucar, Jalisco, Mexico commemorated these festivities. “In Huejucar, there were always (variations) of how the procession would go, but the idea was the same each time–two people would dress up, one as Joseph and the other as Mary (sometimes riding a donkey through the streets to the church). Some participants would act as the residents of the home (where asylum was sought) and others would follow Joseph and Mary, but everyone would sing the (traditional) carol,” Alejandro explained. “With my family, we would sometimes celebrate at home and have half of us outside and the other half inside and we’d sing the carols and finally the ones outside would come in and we would eat posole or tamales.”

Holiday 2019 Los Posadas / continued from page 23

On December 24, the last posada is held and a midnight mass celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Families will celebrate Noche Buena with gatherings and a big feast. Traditional dishes are served, including tamales, pozole, tacos, birria, buñuelos (a Mexican dessert) and other delicacies. Once the clock strikes midnight, families embrace in the joyous celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and the arrival of Christmas Day. The night continues with the opening of presents–and of course, more food. These traditions bring joy to the holiday season as families celebrate their unique blend of customs. –written by Katherine Diaz, contributing writer

De Soto Days 2019 “Rocked” in Downtown De Soto!

Amusement park rides, entertainment, cars on display, vendors and food trucks filled the streets of Downtown De Soto this past Labor Day Weekend. De Soto Days 2019 was swiftly moved from its original location, Miller Park, due to a brief, but intense downpour that dumped torrential amounts of rain on Tuesday morning, the week of the event.

The Evans Midland Carnival could not begin their early set up in a flooded Miller Park. Mike Brungardt, City Administrator, was in the office of Great American Bank that morning, just after the storm, discussing closing down 83rd Street for the rest of the week. Merchants and businesses cooperated with the City, and the De Soto Days Committee moved swiftly to reconfigure an event that takes months of planning, into a few hectic days reorganizing it all. De Soto truly “Rocked!” The City listened to the attending crowds and the consensus of many conversations was “Wow–this is great having De Soto Days downtown...we should do this again!”

The 2019 De Soto Days Committee would like to express sincere gratitude for our wonderful sponsors and our community’s generosity and support in helping us organize and present a family-friendly public event. This has become a portion of the heart of De Soto for over 55 years. This year, last-minute decisions had to be quickly made (due to weather) and everything was moved from Miller Park to the central part of our town. Lots of positive teamwork from an awesome De Soto Day’s and City crew, aspirin, sunshine, and a community willing to be understanding! Hopefully you were able to attend and enjoy some of the many festivities throughout the three-day event. Please go to our website: www.desotodays.com or our Facebook page to view a great collection of pictures, videos and comments that we and others have posted. Thanks again to everyone who contributed in any way to our traditional yearly event–and we look forward to next year, where we plan to set up again in downtown De Soto! MUCH THANKS!!! De Soto

Take a drive along 83rd Street and on De Soto’s east side, enjoy the Penguins by Carriage Houses of Johnson County. Made out of bowling pins, these Artic birds make their home in De Soto each winter. They are a delight to view during both daytime and evening hours with their colorful lights. Some fun trivia facts: There are no penguins at the North Pole or any other part of the Artic. But you’ll find plenty of penguins in Antarctica (as well as in parts of South America and other regions). The birds live almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere. photos rmbprints.com

Exploring Christmas Tree Disposal

De Soto

Honey Creek Sanitation will pick up real trees placed out at the curb in De Soto through December 31. Johnson County offers free Christmas tree recycling, that begins the day after Christmas. Trees can be dropped off from December 26 through January 31 during winter park hours, 7:30 am to 8 pm at Kill Creek Park, 11670 Homestead Lane, Olathe (marina parking lot). No other yard waste will be accepted. Wrapping or any plastic should be removed from the trees, as well as any remaining decorations or lights. Trees will be used to mulch park trails and in landscaping while others will be used to improve fish habitat in park lakes. For additional information https://www.jocogov.org

Christmas Lights–Safety Tip Reminders

• Never leave your Christmas lights on unattended. • LED lights produce very little heat, use less electricity

and last longer than incandescent lights. • Indoor and outdoor lights are not interchangeable. • A rule of thumb is to use only three light strands per outlet. Use a power strip with a built-in circuit breaker for added protection. • Get rid of old lights • Keep outdoor cords dry and high–away from melted snow and pools of rain. • Once your tree dries out, it should be removed. • Avoid using electric lights on metallilc trees • Be extremely cautious with candles. Make sure they are blown out completely. Never leave unattended.
