City of De Soto Employee News & Recognition Serving De Soto’s Municipal Court from 1974 to 2018– Boots Linden retires with 47 years of Service n Boots Linden smiling face and uncanny
personality has been present at De Soto’s Municipal Court for almost half a century. Wanting to make everyone’s appearance in court positive, Boots states “My number one priority in being Court Clerk, in addition to doing a good job, is the defendant–that they feel they were treated fairly and leave with a good impression of the Justice System at the local level.” Boots came to help out with the City Utility Office temporarily for just a few months back in 1971. In 1974, the City convinced Boots to become the first City Court Clerk Administrator. At this time the City disbanded the local police department, and police protection was contracted with the Johnson County Sheriff Office. With this contract, De Soto’s Municipal Court was required to have a Judge who was an attorney, and hire a clerk and prosecutor. There have been many changes over the years, with courts going over to court software. “Many eyebrows were raised when I continued with hand-written receipts so I could personalize notes with the next court date, amended tickets, balance of fines etc.,” said Boots. Go see “Boots” was an easy name for all in court to remember. “I heard I wore my dad’s boots when I was little,” shares Boots, and the name stuck. “Working in one place for many years, these people become your second family,” reminisces Boots. “My City Hall Family took good care of me. When my arm was in a sling for a whole month, I was picked up in the morning and chauffeured home in the afternoon. We called that Driving Miss Daisy, but I sat in the front seat. They are your main support through family issues–my daughter Deb’s two serious illnesses, the illnesses and death of Bob and Craig. They’ve watched my grandchildren, Jessica, Adam and Haleigh grow into adulthood; and great grandma stories about Lydian. Boots has seen great things accomplished. “Buying the junior high building, was one of the best moves the City made, along with the Parks and Recs building the Aquatic Center. Doug Smith’s 37 years in the Water/Waste Water, the Street Department, Building and Inspections have all been great. The administrative staff at City Hall, including the Municipal Court, are there to serve the citizens, and do a darn good job!” Boots emphasizes. She received 40-year and 45-year recognition at the League of Kansas Municipalities’ Annual Conferences. Officially retiring on May 1, 2018, she will enjoy remaining in her longtime hometown of De Soto. “I am fine right where I am,” smiles Boots.

Mission Statement
Providing adventure and lifelong opportunities for De Soto residents. Civic pride, collaboration and inclusiveness are hallmarks of our welcoming city where responsible growth is a goal. Responsive, accountable government working in the best of public interest. continued from page 5 Municipal Court Staff share thoughts in honor of Boots retirement. “Municipal court clerks are the most important part of the municipal court system, and Boots is the best that this area has ever seen. She is the reason that attorneys are happy to handle cases in De Soto, because she makes their job easier and her efficiency is second to none. As a person, I don’t know that I have ever met anyone so kind, gracious and full of compassion. She truly wanted to help everybody that came into our courtroom. The people of DeSoto will never fully know how much she looked after them. She truly believed that her community should be treated as friends, if not family, instead of just another name on the docket sheet. Randy McCalla, Judge “Boots Linden is the epitome of a public servant -- her character and demeanor are such that she can put anyone at ease while meeting their needs. She has been called many things: court clerk, volunteer, gracious community and church member; but my favorite thing to call her is friend.” Amy Mitchel, City Prosecutor
The City of De Soto Welcomes New Employees: n Kathy Bounds brings a solid 17 years of Court Clerk experience, previously employed with the City of Edwardsville. She worked with City Prosecutor, Amy Mitchell for ten years there. “I am honored and thankful to be here and pleased Boots felt confident in me filling her shoes,” said Kathy. “The long tenure of staff says alot about the City.” As the Court Clerk, she is responsible for entering tickets, processing payments, and organizing Dockets (records of proceedings of court cases) and updating files after court. Kathy is part of the KACM (Kansas Association of Courts Management) and Quarterly Court Clerks Networking System. She will also assist with special projects for City staff. n Erika Carrillo was recently hired as Utilities Clerk. She is a UMKC graduate with a Criminal Justice Major. Erika grew up in De Soto, attending Starside, Lexington Middle School and graduated from De Soto High School in 2013. She will help residents with setting up utilities, building permits and general City information. Erika is bilingual and will be a great asset for our Hispanic community. The last Monday of the month she will assist with the Court Docket. Nancy Steele will continue in Utilities, as well as accounts payable, working with Bonnie Bennett. Between all these personable ladies, the community will see a familiar face at the front desk of City Hall.

The K-TEN PLACE Project is the teamwork of four visionaries who came together to build much needed multi-family housing. Approval for the project was received from the City in 2016. Travis Hicks, owner of HIKE Properties, and K-Ten Properties has been a strong investor of De Soto for
many years. He is also President/CEO of TriCentury Bank. Partner Kelly Drake was a Merger and Acquisitions Lawyer. He moved over to Real Estate In 1999, and has built and developed several subdivisions in Lawrence. Mark Kern, President/CEO of Kern Group, Inc. has over 20 years experience in strategic marketing, advertising and media planning. Jason Cohorst, original owner of Canyon Stone/current general manager, has many connections with De Soto. Canyon Stone’s quality stone veneer, molded from natural stone, is showcased throughout K-Ten Place.
“Our Thanks to the City of De Soto, who were easy to work with and very accommodating in the approval process–helping us reach and accomplish our final goal.”

SPECIAL FEATURE–De Soto’s Produce Markets
Exploring
A Family Heritage of Fresh fruits and vegetables from Bowlins Family Farm
De Soto
Known for their roadside produce stand and farmers markets throughout Johnson County.
With a family farm history of over 50 years, Steve Bowlin has been selling fresh fruits and vegetables since childhood. Bowlin’s grandfather was known for growing watermelon and cantaloupe north and west of town, near the upper bottoms. At one time, his grandfather’s farm supplied melons to all the A&P supermarkets in Kansas City. Bowlin moved to De Soto in the 1960s, where his dad Roy Bowlin had raised crops all his life. “Dad and I farmed full time until 1975, then I got married and walked away from the farm for awhile,” Bowlin said. But about five years later he started dabbling in fruits and vegetables at his Olathe home. Like the plants he tended, the first fledgling signs of Bowlin’s roadside business started to emerge as well. “We grew more than we could eat, so we started going to the (the original) Olathe farmers market in the early 1980s,” Bowlin said. They enjoyed this side business for many years. In 2003, Steve and Sherry Bowlin moved back to the family farm in De Soto, taking up residence in Grandma and Grandpa Bowlin’s house right next to his parents’ home. “Dad was still farming at that time, so I moved back over to be of more help and to make it easier for them,” Steve said. Fresh From the Farm Around the same time, the idea of promoting fresh homegrown produce was starting to take root in the Kaw Valley. Nearby resident Darrel Zimmerman started a Wednesday night farmers market at The Barn at Kill Creek Farm, and Bowlin found a new outlet for his fresh produce. “That’s when it all broke loose,” Bowlin said. “We kept producing more and more, and opened up [the roadside stand] in the mid-2000s. The family’s first roadside stand started out along 115th Street as a tent with a wagon underneath it. A permanent produce stand was set up under the sprawling maple tree next to his house in 2010. In 2015, Bowlin’s uncle joined him in getting back into the melon business. He rented land from Zimmerman along the river bottom and started producing melons for De Soto and Olathe farmers markets. In 2016, he added Eudora, Mission and Gardner markets and small mom-and-pop grocery stores in Eudora and North Kansas City in 2017. An estimated 8,000-10,000 watermelons and 3,000-4,0000 cantaloupes were grown on the 3.5-acre plot. This year four acres of mostly seedless watermelon will be planted “because no one wants to eat the seeds.” 16 16
Known for tomatoes, Bowlin Family Farms also offers green beans, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, lettuce, okra, peppers, potatoes, spinach, berries, pumpkins and sweet corn. “We try to add one or two new items each year,” Bowlin said. “It was a big hit when we brought in peaches from an orchard on the Missouri side.” Bringing in 30-50 cases of peaches a week, some get bruised. “My mother, bless her soul can’t see anything go to waste,” said Bowlin. “Rather that throw them away, we decided to make jam.” Peach Bourbon Jam is a favorite that sells out quickly. For many, taking a drive out to the countryside to find local and it turns out that local farmers feel the same way. “I can construction business owner, “but I come out here, and I’ll

The family loves the small-town community feel that running a roadside stand brings. “We prefer to stay more with the farmers market, and [farm stand] here at the house, and add a few new items each year,” Bowlin notes. “It’s more of a community thing anymore,” Bowlin said. People want to buy local produce, but it’s more than that. “It’s a place to come and get some fresh vegetables and stand around and chat.”
Happy Valley Farm owners Spike and Patty Durkin are helping local families learn about raising fresh fruit. Increased interest in growing blueberries has spawned a new twist to the family business—educational classes. Blueberries 101 teaches everything people need to know growing and harvesting blueberries. “This onehour class takes a hands-on approach, and participants go home with a blueberry plant,” said owner Patty Durkin. Edible Landscaping showcases cherries, berries, gooseberries, and other edible plants and demonstrates how homeowners can incorporate them into their landscaping plans. “We found that people are not familiar with blueberry bushes and cherry bushes and how pretty they can be in your landscaping,” Durkin said. Beeswax Candlemaking shares the process of making this fragrant natural resource into candles. Check the website for class schedules or mention your interest or idea to the Durkins; they’re open to adding classes based on customer interest. Visit Happy Valley’s on-site store, The Honey Shack, featuring a wall of honey as well as honeybee products, pure beeswax, pure beeswax candles, jarred honeycomb, granulated pollen, and honey dippers. Bob Bruce is an ecclectic type of guy when it comes to gardening. He grows mini-Romain lettuce, varieties of hot and heatless Habaneros, long pole beans, and colorful varieties of purple potatoes, and big, black rasberries. This year his theme is “yellow”–radishes, mellons and carrots. Look for Bruce’s Produce at
The Barn at Kill Creek Farm, Wednesdays, from 4:30 to 7.
Bob’s mini-greenhouse begins with Jump Start Seedling Heat Mats, placed underneath plant trays. These warm the rooting area to improve germination and rooting. Dome-shapped wires hold up plastic sheeting, protecting plants from freezing. Above photos show results of plant protection from this year’s late frosts.

You’ll also find Bob working in the produce department at Harps, where all his gardening knowledge is very helpful. I visited Bob at his homegrown garden, complete with a “mini greenhouse” that came in handy this Spring with our cold weather. Another specialty, Shittake Mushrooms are grown behind a shed in a wood pile of red and white oak. “Mushrooms are saprophytes and like to ‘eat’ wood,” Bob explains. “Wooden dowels, colonized with the fungus, are drilled into logs, and incubate up to a year. Sugars and nutrients in the oak/bark structure, allow mushrooms to produce up to ten years into a starter piece.” Look for a “Mushroom Class” in the future. His mushrooms were supplied to the former De Soto restaurant “Blue Tomato.” Former owner, Karen Mitchel, is his aunt. Bob’s knowledge of mushrooms came from The Kaw Valley Mycological Society www.sunflower.com/~pilott29/ Produce is also sold to Rolling Prairie Farmers Alliance CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) in Lawrence offering locally grown produce subscriptions from farmers cooperatives. www.rollingprairiecsa.com –interview with Bob Bruce by Rose Burgweger

WILD FIRE SAFETY SUMMER SAFETY FIRE SAFETY Summer Safety Tips Do your part in Wildland Fire Prevention Completely extinguish your cigarettes Keep trailer chains from dragging on the ground while driving avoiding sparks always call the fire department if you burn brush or have a bonfire 913-583-3886
The acquisition of the new brush truck and wildland personal protective equipment allows NWCFD to better respond to wildfire emergencies. Our oldest brush truck (which was 25 years old) was replaced with a new apparatus that provides a more reliable fleet for the rural Johnson County area that we serve.
never leave a burn pile unattended
The protective equipment gear is designed for wildland firefighting and offers greater benefits to the firefighters. Wearing task-specific gear for prolonged periods reduces heat stress. In addition, it is a quarter of the cost of structural firefighting gear. –Intern Chief Todd Maxton. Shown above: New brush truck used in Wildfire with views showing equipment. Shown at left: NWCFD firefighters wearing their new wildland gear.
