Following the Annual General Meeting of Market Deeping Town Council, held on May 13th 2020, Joshua Yarham was elected by the Town Council by a majority vote to become the Mayor.
F
ollowing the Annual General Meeting of Market Deeping Town Council, held on May 13th 2020, Joshua Yarham was elected by the Town Council by a majority vote to become the Mayor. He becomes the thirteenth individual to wear the town’s chains of office since Market Deeping was raised in status from a village to a town over three decades ago. The Deputy Mayor of Market Deeping for 2020/2021 is Councillor Miss Virginia Moran. Here, Josh introduces himself and outlines his thoughts and some of his ambitious plans for the year ahead: “I was born and raised in Market Deeping and have been in the community for twenty-six years. I have over the years seen it change dramatically and I would like to positively contribute to moving Market Deeping forward to new and ambitious goals. I feel that being the youngest Mayor Market Deeping has ever had brings an endless potential benefit. A young, socially-liberal Conservative, leading a Town Council enables the message of tolerance and diversity to be put at the forefront of my agenda. Unity and efficiency are principles that I will ensure Market Deeping Town Council constantly strives towards, in all the positive tasks and positive decision-making we do.
There are real investment opportunities within Market Deeping that need to be supported by the Town Council, such as another supermarket and new leisure facilities, all to bolster the imminent increase in the population, due to housing development. It means a lot to me to be part of this local community. To be Mayor is a real honour and provides a platform to give back to the community that has helped me so much. The initiative also promotes Town Councillors to be accessible for residents to communicate with via e-mail. Matters will be resolved more efficiently and quickly. During my year as Mayor, I intend to promote Market Deeping around the country as an opportunity for investment, a place of diversity and tolerance and a community that helps its fellow neighbour.”
My ultimate aim during my term is to achieve a “Digital Council”; a Council that dramatically reduces its use of paper and streamlines its use of non-renewable energy. I see unique and unprecedented issues facing Market Deeping. There has been a monumentally admirable and pragmatic approach to providing help and assistance to the most vulnerable in our community throughout the COVID-19 crisis. I help those in need where I can. The consequences of the current health pandemic have raised matters relating to the environment. Reduced speed zones in the town centre and cycleways need to be encouraged in order for the community to be persuaded to use modes of transport that do not contribute to excessive carbon emissions. We have wonderful amounts of countryside surrounding us that are there to be used! 46
