Introduction
Welcome to your August Issue. Inside Highlights
Welcome to our August issue of your favourite community lifestyle magazine. As I write, the Covid-19 focus has now moved onto the facemask, and whether or not they should be compulsory. Months ago, I remember reading a newspaper article about a lady who had been cutting up one of her bras to make a face mask. The headline, of course, just had to be “Get it off your chest”! In a way, the face mask has become our new bra! It can be awkward to put on and feel uncomfortable, we don’t need to wear it around the house, but when we go outside without one on, everyone notices … especially the men! I continue to be so impressed with the many ways people in our area have pulled together, sharing and caring, all keen to come out of this horrible pandemic, stronger than before. Businesses are contacting us with their ambitious plans for a better future. Every week seems a little closer to the time when we can say that we’re back to normal. Meanwhile, let’s keep on our guard, follow the advice and keep caring for each other.
Claire x
A warm welcome to our August issue and with our articles this month you can almost hear our contributors willing us back to normality. Now, well into the summer holiday season, the wrangling over quarantine when leaving and returning to this country continues, and the word “staycation” looks like threatening “furlough” as the 2020 ‘Word of the Year’! Yes, this could be the year when more people than ever holiday in the British Isles. They could find that Margate is better than Marbella, that Lancashire trumps Lanzarote, and that Cornwall knocks spots off Corfu – but then again …! The silver lining behind our present dark COVID-cloud might be the news recently that more than a million people may have quit smoking in Britain during the pandemic. Maybe if/when the compulsory wearing of face masks, at all times, becomes law, then the remaining six million plus smokers will be forced to follow! Finally, overheard recently, following the appointment of Sir Keir Starmer as the new Labour party leader: “Anyone named after my favourite yogurt (Skyr) is going to get my vote!” Enjoy the read!

P
rosecco is extremely popular and Pizzolato Organic Prosecco (11% vol) certainly does not disappoint. This impressive, sparkling production exudes a fine and persistent perlage, which pleases the nasal senses with fruits, including apples and pears, that follow on to the mouthfeel and palate sensation. I found this Prosecco crisp and refreshing, being produced utilising 100% Glera grapes to great advantage. Irresistible Cava (11.5% vol) is another most popular sparkling wine, that adorns many dining tables, constantly. Made by Castillo Perelada, renowned for excellent sparkling wines, this exclusive blend delivers a dry, refreshing experience that continues throughout – to the very last enjoyable drop! The grape is Macabeo. Taittinger is very much recognised as one of the leading Champagne houses. This family-owned and managed company (founded in 1734) produces outstanding, multi award-winning Champagnes. The use of Chardonnay grapes is of great importance and results in exceptional Champagne productions, which are admired and appreciated by many. Taittinger Brut Reserve (12.5% vol) is a favourite for Champagne lovers, worldwide. The bouquet and splendid perlage are just perfect and the balanced, superb mouthfeel follows, to complement. The palate’s sensation completes the experience with excellent depth and a most memorable finish.

For the spirits, I found ‘Passion Fruit, Mango and Lime Flavoured Gin Limited Edition’ (40% vol) to suit my palate perfectly. The description on the bottle states ‘zesty and vibrant’ – I agree. Infused with the flavours of passion fruit, mango and lime, this five-times distilled production has a splendid combination of tropical inclusions, with the lime citrus addition, balancing wonderfully. Irresistible ‘Pineapple Rum Spirit Drink’ (40% vol) has a good number of ‘devotees’, too. Produced using Dominican Republic rum and eight-year aged Barbados rum, this certainly ‘comes through’ with its tropical taste, evoking thoughts of paradise, with pineapples and sunshine. Happy days! I located these drinks at a Co-op store. The Co-op is dedicated and committed to Fair Trade. Expert advice is always available, which includes valuable information about pairing wines/drinks with foods, too. Excellent quality beverages include beers, wines and spirits, with several award winners amongst the ranges. If Co-op membership is of interest, then customers can enjoy rewards on selected products and purchases. WILTSHIRE FARM FOODS GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR ITS CUSTOMERS The UK’s leading frozen food delivery service, Wiltshire Farm Foods, has always sought to make a real difference to its customers, by providing delicious and nutritious meals directly to their doors. The company is in a unique position to deal with the current coronavirus pandemic, with many of its customers aged over seventy and vulnerable, and is determined to maintain its renowned reputation for excellent customer service and delivering readymade meals to those who need it most. All the staff at Wiltshire Farm Foods Peterborough have risen to the various challenges presented by the pandemic. Experiencing unprecedented levels of demand, the whole team has rallied round to ensure its customers continue to receive their meals. Geoff Plummer, director at the branch, says: “This is an incredibly difficult time for everyone and Wiltshire Farm Foods’ mission, ‘making a real difference’,
has never been more important as many of our customers rely solely on us for their daily meals. “We’ve adopted new social distancing measures with all drivers equipped with hand sanitisers and gloves and performing default non-contact deliveries. They have been touched by the public’s response to them when out and about, often receiving praise and being told what fantastic work they are doing.” The team has also started including puzzle books in its deliveries which has been hugely appreciated by its customers and demonstrated by the many handwritten thank you letters the company receives on a daily basis. At a time when supermarket delivery slots are booked for weeks and many must wait a number of days to receive their groceries, an order placed with Wiltshire Farm Foods often guarantees you a delivery in the next few days – at no additional cost – and no contract. The company has also installed a priority line for those contacted by the NHS and confirmed as being ‘extremely vulnerable’, to prioritise those that really need their service. Country Court says ‘Thank You’... to Hard-working Care Staff at Local Care Homes with Gifts
S
taff at Country Court’s Tallington Lodge Care Home in Tallington and Rose Lodge Care Home in Market Deeping received a ‘Thank You’ gift from the Kachra family, owners of the Country Court group, in early July. The company operates thirty-two care homes across the UK, employing over two thousand staff, all of whom will receive the gifts as thanks for their continued work, caring for some of the most vulnerable people in society.
Country Court CEO, Alykhan Kachra, said, “Our staff have been amazing throughout this pandemic, putting our residents before themselves and their own families. Many have worked long hours and extra shifts; we felt they deserved a treat, and this would be a great way to say thank you and to acknowledge the sacrifices that people continue to make.” At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the group delivered a ‘Care Package’ to every member of staff, consisting of over twenty items including food, drink and basic provisions to help with day-
to-day life, whilst food and basic provisions were scarce. The latest gift package includes treats to enjoy at the end of a working day, including Prosecco, chocolate, ‘Country Court Jellybeans’, caramel shortbread and shea butter moisturising hand cream. The thank you gifts have been very well received by the care home staff. Home Manager, Manju Panankavil, commented, “We would like to say a huge thank you to the Kachra family for the lovely gifts, generosity and continued support. The pandemic has been challenging for everyone, but here at Tallington Lodge we are very proud of all our staff and their continued hard work to keep our residents and each other safe.” Chairman of Country Court, Abdul Kachra, said, “We want to thank every single member of staff in our care homes for their continued commitment. We hope that this token of our appreciation will be a nice treat that they can take home and enjoy at the end of a hard day’s work.” The Country Court group operates thirty-two nursing and care homes which are working to support elderly people throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Founded in 1983, it is a family-run business to this day, with the company philosophy, “Our family caring for yours”, at the heart of every home.

Effective ways by which we can
transition through change
BY NICOLE WOODCOCK, HUMMINGBIRD HYPNOTHERAPY
O
ur current situation is bringing about more and more change each week. Through updates and re-openings after such a long time being confined to our homes and following rules, as things begin to ease, it only seems somewhat normal to have anxiety surrounding this change.
From various discussions I have had with clients and friends, we have all adapted in different ways to manage the environment around us. Some have found this comforting, a time to reflect and slow down. Others have found it difficult to adapt and manage everything that is going on around them. Whichever side you’re sitting, there is no right or wrong answer. What is right is doing what is best for you. I took on a practical approach whereby I sat and wrote a list of everything that I could control, thus taking ownership of where I am right now and knowing I am safe and well with my family. This became my mental bubble. If I sat and started to over-think the situation, I knew that I would end up at the worst case scenario because that is
how my brain works and I really didn’t want to be stuck with that. “Procrastination Station” isn’t a great place for anyone! So, as we ease back into our new way of living, give yourself the opportunity to focus on all those things that you are in control of. Giving your brain the correct information and making a proper assessment of it will then keep you in a more positive mindset and more open to change and transition during this time. Be able to keep reminding ourselves that this is also not a race. Take your time getting used to how things are now
working. Visualise how you want things to be, rather than how you don’t want them to be. That is so very helpful in work and going out and about. It can be very easy to be pulled into ‘other people stuff’ and opinions at this time. There may be fear of judgement from others and the anxiety of what others may think. We are all individual for a reason; we are not all going to agree with each other. So, choose for yourself and what is best for you. Kindness and Positivity

DEEP-IN AESTHETICS: Choose Wisely
Latest news from Deep-in Aesthetics’ Julie Higgins:
People all over the UK undergo non-surgical treatments like Botox and fillers every year, but the industry operates almost completely unchecked. Non-surgical cosmetic treatments are everywhere. You might have seen them on your Facebook timeline, on ‘Love Island’ or in the media. Nowadays, you don’t even have to go under the knife to get this enhanced look. In the UK, non-surgical treatments like Botox and dermal fillers – known as ‘tweakments’ – are a £2.75 billion business. Nine out of ten cosmetic procedures performed in the country fall into this category. Though tweakments can include skin peels and laser treatments, the industry thrives off injectables like fillers, which seek to plump up volume in the face. While these cosmetic procedures were once the preserve of the affluent, they are now so widely available that almost everyone seems to be at it, and class now doesn’t make a difference. But it is

Some typical indicators of hearing problems may be asking people to repeat themselves, turning the television up, struggling to hear in noisy environments, or confusing words or misunderstanding what is being said in a conversation. It is often a friend or family member that notices beforehand. If you can identify with any of these, then it is important to book a hearing assessment to determine whether hearing loss is present, and to eliminate simple things such as earwax.
SOUND ADVICE HEARING: Open Again and Covid-19 Compliant If you have been struggling with your hearing recently and found it difficult to interact with family and friends, then contact us to have your hearing assessed in a safe and friendly environment. It is estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, which equates to about ten million people in the country. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually; it can be an inconvenience, can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation, and has been linked to mental health issues. On average, it takes between ten and fifteen years to come to terms with it. This is a shame, because the ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses, yet unlike vision (or your teeth) it is often taken for granted.
This is where Sound Advice Hearing can help. We are a local independent, family business, with full-time hearing centres in Market Deeping and Kings Lynn. Contact us now to book your FREE hearing test. A New Revolutionary Hearing Aid We are pleased to announce the introduction of the latest hearing aid to take the world by storm. Community News
TRUE COMMUNITY SPIRIT SHOWN AS “FEED THE DEEPINGS” GROUP HELPS THE VULNERABLE Feed the Deepings has grown from an idea by Deepings Round Table Chairman, Simon Bateman, into a powerful community volunteer group delivering crisis aid right across the area. Simon started shopping for vulnerable ‘41 Club’ members in the early days of lockdown.
the Round Table, Rotary Club, Lions Club, Deeping United FC, Age Concern and the Deeping Food Bank. Deeping United Charities, Market Deeping Town Council, Deeping St. James Parish Council, and local residents started making small donations. The Scouts loaned the use of their building.
The Deepings Youth Group started delivering food parcels to the vulnerable in Deeping and was forced to stop because of lockdown. One of the churches approached Simon to take the Youth Group’s work on.
Initially, food was purchased locally and then Tesco in Market Deeping was approached and agreed to contribute the food. At the same time, the group registered with ‘Food share’ who supply food every week for a small delivery charge. Deliveries are now made to over a hundred vulnerable people, in and around the Deepings and who are divided into three areas. They get a delivery once a week, on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday.
At this stage, Rotary got involved and “Feed the Deepings Group” was established with local volunteers to help with deliveries. Funding came from
The group also started having stalls at the Open Door Baptist Church in Deeping St. James and at the Tesco’s foyer in Market Deeping to give out food to families in difficulty, due to the lockdown. Without the help from members of Round Table, Rotary Club, Lions Club and the local residents who help to deliver parcels and man the stalls, this could not have been achieved. It’s really been a true community effort!
CARE4CAREHOMES APPEAL Avid members of a local sewing team are using their needles to help Peterborough care home staff to stay safe. The “Care4carehomes” appeal was born from an original small project team, set up last October. Their project leader quickly turned her hand to bringing a smile and support to care homes, care teams and key workers in Peterborough and the surrounding area. The appeal took off in April this year, after hearing the tragic news of seven deaths in one care home in just ten days. Having reached out to a seamstress friend, who had been sewing scrubs for the NHS since March, (who kindly donated two 12
patterns and enough fabric for twelve scrubs), the team then put out an appeal for sewing volunteers, along with fabric and toiletry donations, across social media, local radio and the press. Fast forward three months… and the team have now made over two hundred and sixty scrub sets and hundreds of handmade accessories. They have also gifted 3D visors and medical grade masks to several homes. The donations have been to twelve care homes and community teams, and to countless keyworkers and carers.
THE APPEAL CONTINUES! The team is now appealing for more sewing team members

Empire is Back, on Solid Foundations of
Trust and Detail
W
e’re back! From July 25th we are open again and in a new climate with which we are now all very familiar. However, remember this… The virus hasn’t gone away! So, life and business now are not about ignoring an uncomfortable truth. Life and business are now about being prepared. If society wants to move forward, progress and save the economy, we need to invest our time and our minds in adapting our daily behaviours to make every one of us as safe as possible. Of course, to control our own behaviour is the easy part. Trusting our families and friends is also easy to do, but to ponder on whether wider society and the businesses we frequent are doing the same can sometimes be a source of anxiety. The Deepings is populated with lots of small businesses and I would like to congratulate them

Deepings
all on the spirit in which they are all rising from this crisis and finding ways to keep their customers safe. The Deepings is doing its people proud. For us at Empire Gym, we have seen the situation as an opportunity to excel – even before the ‘reopening’ of the doors. The true character of people is never found in good times. Character is found and forged when your back is to the wall. This applies by extension to businesses, and I have made it my mission to show the community that the true character of Empire Gym is one of absolute fight and determination to do things properly. To turn every stone, to do the detailed research and to implement with accuracy and competency, innovative, effective workable ways to make you safe, while you do your health the biggest favour you can do… by exercising! I have written much, documented much and communicated much in the last few months, both with our customers and with the community, through this magazine, social media, e-mail, text
AUGUST 2020
Health and more. So, rather than going over the same information, may I point you to the location of the document that underpins all our plans? It is called ‘The ‘Empire Gym Gold Standard - Our ‘COVID-Safe’ Action, Investment and Implementation Plan’ and can be accessed via a link in the front page of our website www.empiregyms.com. It contains twenty-two pages of reassuring, scrupulous detail based on research, experience and an obsession to prove that we can safely excel as a business, while you can safely excel in your exercise during a global pandemic. Speaking of character, writing the document made me realise just how much Empire Gym and its customers mean to me. It also reminded me of how much I want to win! This might be a strange thing to say… to win?
I want Empire to be the most Innovative, the most responsible and to be the standard to which all other businesses are held.
During lockdown, all of us were removed from our businesses, our skills and our talents and our professional passions, and we were blessed with quiet time with our families and our thoughts, while we watched and marvelled at the selfless brilliance of our NHS. Our thoughts were, are and always will be, with those who have suffered illness and terrible loss.
In coming ‘back to work’, however, I discovered the power of immersing yourself in being the best. Striving, competing, working hard and wanting to win! And this is where much of my character and the character of Empire Gym excels in this next step toward a new way of living, a new way of succeeding and a new way of excelling. You see that drive means that I want Empire to be the safest, the cleanest and to be the most wellread and well informed. I want Empire to be the most Innovative, the most responsible and to be the
standard to which all other businesses are held. Because in wanting all these things, you as the customer will benefit. You as the customer can see the detail that is behind our decision making.
You as the customer can focus on your behaviours knowing that our processes not only display our own ethics and standards, but the engineered frameworks we have provided mean that everyone around you in the Empire environment will also be displaying behaviours you can trust. And that is the word I want you to take away from this piece – trust! You can trust me, and you can trust Empire Gym to be relentless in our aspiration to make and keep you safe and, in turn, to allow you to exercise. After all, the more we can all exercise, the healthier we will all be. And the healthier we all are, the better our fight against the pandemic. Love to all and see you soon,
Matt x

BLOOD TYPE AND DIET Here’s the Connection!
I
f you’ve been paying attention to COVID-19 headlines lately, you may have heard that blood type may play a role in people’s susceptibility to the virus and the severity of symptoms it might produce - a way to better understand our risk, which is great! Except, what if you don’t know your blood type?
If you don’t already know your blood type, finding a record of it can be difficult – blood type isn’t on your birth certificate and is not typically listed in records from routine lab work. At the end of the day, there is nothing you can do about your blood type – it’s not a risk factor you can control in any way. But there are other risk factors that you can control, so focus your energy there instead. By following your ‘blood type diet’, you will stop constantly knocking your health by eating the wrong foods and boost your immune system to stay strong in the current circumstances. William C. Boyd, an American immunochemist, was the first researcher to identify the blood type specificity of many common dietary lectins. His findings revealed that lectins could bind to many of the carbohydrate antigens found in the gut and immune system.

So, you may need to do a blood type test – and that is actually quite simple. •

ENCOURAGING WORDS: Rebekah: “I had been battling with various eating disorders since the age of 20 and trying to find a diet that worked. I went on a high protein diet that landed me in hospital with a backed up bowel. I am a blood type A and so unable to metabolize high amounts of meat! After meeting Wendy she identified that I was currently eating foods that I should avoid including coconut oil and strawberries. Since tweaking and adapting my diet I have maintained a healthy weight and now I really enjoy my food as I know that it’s exactly what my body wants.”

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE ‘R’ WORD!
A
BY MATTHEW BIGGS - LIBERTY PARTNERSHIP LTD
s we are now fully into a ‘new normal’, a lot of people are taking this chance to review where they are and, more importantly, what they are now going to do as we move forward.
There is no denying we have all been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Although we have all been affected in different ways, we are now all in the same position … what to do next? As the economy is re-opening a lot of people who were furloughed are now, hopefully, returning to the workplace. The selfemployed will have seen an uptick in their work, as the restrictions have been lifted. But I wonder how many of you had a taste of time away from work and thought, “I quite like this”?

Here, at Liberty Partnership, we have been fortunate enough to work relatively normally during the entire lockdown period and we have certainly seen a shift in clients’ attitudes. In the past, many would come to us with the thought of retirement still being far into the distance, but not anymore. We have spoken to many clients about retirement and, to the surprise of a lot of them, the fact is that it is achievable … and much sooner than they thought! If you are one of the many people who now likes the idea of ‘winding down’ towards retirement, and would like to know what is achievable, then please contact our office on 01778 342291 to arrange a FREE initial consultation with one of our friendly and experienced Financial Planners.

The Power of Posture BY CLAIRE GRAY, OWNER OF RENU
When we are trying to improve our fitness, we tend to focus on our weight control, energy levels and body shape - all important aspects of our health and wellbeing. Good posture is often taken for granted or considered something that will come naturally with an exercise routine.
T
he truth is that, whilst the different activities we do may be fantastic for certain areas of fitness, they do not always complement good posture. That is something you need to consider separately. Usually flexion is the enemy!
way system means that it is easy to get a good workout in the minimum time and also much easier to maintain social distancing. Pilates is specifically designed to address posture and alignment, and this is also a main focus in our Fitness Yoga class. Claire’s online “lockdown survival” classes will continue until further notice. If you would like to try them, you can find more information at www.clairegrayfitnesssolutions.co.uk.
Consider the positions you are in when driving your car, doing the gardening, ironing, cooking, cycling, sitting at a desk. Often, when we try on a new outfit, we pull our shoulders back, put our pelvis in a good position, grow tall and take a look sideways at our reflection. How great do you look?!
Here are a few exercises you can do at home to improve your posture.
1
Good posture makes you look at least half a stone slimmer, more toned and more confident. Your clothes hang much better on your body and your internal organs all settle into their correct position, meaning you breathe more efficiently and your skeletal system is in a much better alignment, causing less stress on your joints. It can also improve your digestion. Our gym is designed to ensure that you are in the best alignment when you train and work all the important postural muscles. The circuit-based one-

While you are here, squeeze your hips and lift them off the floor and then lower again. Repeat several times daily.

Sit on the edge of a dining room chair with your feet flat on the floor and sit up as tall as you can. Hold for a few seconds and repeat.

While you are sitting in this position, draw in your chin and squeeze your shoulder blades together and release. Repeat several times daily.

WORDS FROM THE
Mayor of Market Deeping
COUNCILLOR JOSHUA YARHAM
It has been like a whirlwind over the past month; shops have been reawakened and the pubs are able to serve their first pints again in months.
M
arket Deeping is slowly getting back to a sense of normality, where residents are able to support local businesses. This has been a welcome change and I look forward to supporting further relaxation of lockdown rules, hopefully in the near future. At the Town Council, we have transferred over to holding our meetings via Zoom. This has enabled us to still meet and hold Full Council and Committee meetings. Over the past month, I have chaired two meetings, namely the July Full Council Meeting and an Extraordinary Meeting. The latter was a discussion amongst all councillors about the logistics of replacing the play equipment on John Eve Field. This task has been waiting for too long, so I am focussed on making sure it is completed in the shortest time-frame possible. The Full Council Meeting covered many areas that combined all committee reports and decisions. Further, we have been able to fill the casual vacancy and have welcomed Mr. John Dolan to the Council. It is vital that Market Deeping has new and fresh 22

perspectives and views on its Town Council. During Full Council, I stressed the importance of us meeting in August so that we do not incur any further delays to action and changes that await our collective decisions. Normally, the summer recess prevents a meeting in August, but with the cooperation of councillors, we have overruled that convention for this year. I welcome the appointment of our new cemetery keeper, Mr. Kevin Jarvis. He started work on June 29th and I am pleased to hear that he is thoroughly enjoying the work and the team he is with, Peter and Jamie. The Sanctum is due a renovation and improvement of plaques. This was voted for at Full Council and Councillor Brian Hembrow is diligently overlooking the progress of the works to be completed. We have many more exciting things ahead, planned for the benefit of the residents of Market Deeping. If there is anything I may be able to help with, please e-mail the Town Clerk at mdtc.townclerk@btconnect.com. Keep safe! AUGUST 2020

RAISING THE PROFILE OF LOCAL BUSINESSES Deepings Business Awards
A
s our community starts to re-emerge into a ‘new normal’, we are finding it’s a time for re-adjustment, approaching the unknown with an abundance of hope. I have visited businesses across the community, local villages, industrial estates and the town centre. ‘New challenges’ are a common theme and some businesses are finding things much harder than others coping with COVID-19 and its restrictions.
There’s a strong sense of finding solutions, making changes and a determination to survive. In the coming weeks, yet more businesses will be able to reopen. The @Deepings Business Community has been working hard to support local businesses, through its membership. It has created a new local website along with ‘Love Deepings’, designed to promote LOCAL and support local businesses. DBC works hard to raise the profile of LOCAL and never before has that been so critical in supporting the vibrancy of our local community. So, if you haven’t already nominated your favourite local businesses for their efforts, service and other qualities you admire, then please do so - yet another
way we can help local businesses raise their profile. Nominations close on July 24th with voting starting on August 1st for businesses across the Deepings and local villages. Visit the link for all the information and nomination/ voting forms @ www.deepings.co.uk/deepingbusiness-awards/this-years-awards/ Thank you Alison DBC / Love Deepings
Mini Raft Competition Good News from the Deepings Raft Race Committee, as Vice-Chairman, Andy Pelling, explains this year’s exciting plans:
that, for what would have been raft race weekend this year (August 1st and 2nd), you display them in your front window or front garden for the public to enjoy.
“As we are sure most people know, the 2020 Deepings Raft Race has been cancelled. In its place this year, we are encouraging children to enter a MINI RAFT BUILDING competition, ideally built from recycled materials and designed to any theme you like.
Entries close on July 28th, 2020 and we will publish pictures of the best ones on the Deepings Raft Race website and social media pages. If we get enough entries, we will produce a “route” to show people where they can have a walk around the Deepings to admire the mini rafts. The winner will be announced on August 2nd and will receive £50.
To enter the competition, simply take a photo or short video of your raft and e-mail it to: raftentry@deepingsraftrace. co.uk. They won’t be raced on the river this year, but you can keep them for 2021, but we ask 24

And don’t forget to put August 1st, 2021 in your diary for what we hope will be the biggest and bestever event, when the full-blown Deepings Raft Race returns. For further information, please visit www.deepingsraftrace.co.uk.”
To add to the fun, the Raft Race Committee will be donning fancy dress and walking around the Deepings on the Sunday, as we are supporting the DEEPING-A-

The Mustard Seed Project (Kenya) Impressive progress being made The Mustard Seed Project (Kenya) is a small charity founded by Deeping couple, Rita and Geoff Fowler. They have been working in a deprived Mombasa, Kenya, suburb for more than eleven years and now have a school, with a feeding programme for two hundred and seventy-five poor children, aged from three to fourteen years of age. Half these children are in a rented building, but very soon they will all be together in the building which is in the final stages of construction, which will save £5,000 a year in rent. The thing they are even prouder of is the way that all children are achieving the very best they can, as the results in their Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) shows. The government thinks that ‘C’ is a good grade and, for the Mustard Seed Project, this has been the lowest grade
achieved. Last year, one child achieved an ‘A’ grade putting him in the top 1% in the country, thus granting an automatic place in a ‘National’ school. Unfortunately, there will be no KCPE this year, as schools remain closed until January, the start of the school year. It also means that Rita and Geoff, who normally spend two months working in Mombasa each year, will be unable to visit to see the
completion of the building. Worse still is that, without the feeding programme, many children would have starved. The Mustard Seed Project has been feeding seventy-five families, as well as providing soap to all two hundred and fourteen of their families during closure, costing £5 per family per week. To learn more, or to see how you could help, please visit www.mustardseedproject.co.uk.
DEEPING ST JAMES COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL “It seems an awfully long time since the middle of March 2020 when the school closed to all but the children of “key workers”. As I mentioned in last month’s issue, we were all very pleased to have partially reopened for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6, and the uptake has been very encouraging. We have even had two “key worker bubbles” in the past four to five weeks, as we have supported parents getting back to work. Our term for most children will finish on July 17th, but on July 20th and 21st we will be welcoming all the Year 6 class (and key workers’ children) into school to celebrate their time at DSJ and to also have an open-air, leavers’ assembly (weather permitting!) They have been an excellent Year 6 class and we will miss them greatly. A U GUS T 2 020
During lockdown, we have also been awarded the UNICEF ‘Bronze Rights Respecting School Award’. This is an award based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) that encourages children, and staff, to understand, and act on, the UNICEF’s fifty-four articles on the rights of the child. Mrs Hutton has been leading this and hopefully we will be working towards our Silver Award in the next academic year. As a school, may I wish you a great summer holiday season, and hope that September will bring with it some kind of peace and normality. Take care and keep safe! Ian Wilkinson, Headteacher

Your Garden
August Gardening Tips
A
ugust is the month when you reap the fruits of your labour and hopefully you will have a bumper harvest. In fact, sometimes you have far more than you can eat but there are several ways of preserving the fruit and vegetables for use through the winter months.
Several root vegetables store well in a cool, ventilated spot such as a shed or garage. Root crops, such as carrots and parsnips should have their leaves and loose soil removed and then put into layers of damp sand. Potatoes should be dried off in the sun and then stored in hessian sacks. I went to the local fish and chip shop and they gave me their old paper potato bags! There are not many things you can sow or plant now for harvesting this year, maybe salad leaves, a last planting of carrots or turnips and some leafy vegetables such as chard. However, as space becomes available when crops finish, you can plant overwintering crops such as Brussels sprouts, spring cabbage and winter cauliflowers. Cabbage seeds can be planted in a temporary bed or in pots or modules; remember to cover them with nets to keep off the birds and caterpillars. • Prune gooseberry and currant bushes. • Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot where you have not grown them for at least three years. Planting them through plastic will help conserve moisture and provide warmth during the winter.

• Make sure that you harvest courgettes regularly, before they grow too large. • Cut to the ground all summer-fruiting raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit. • Tomatoes, pumpkins and squash need feeding with a tomato fertiliser. • Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. Continue pinching out and do not forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden – also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees. • Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems. • Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow ‘green manure’, such as clover or vetch, which will provide nitrogen for the soil, or alfalfa, cress or mustard which will help break up the soil. • Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes, as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year. • Be on the lookout for potato blight, especially if the weather is damp and humid. Cut off the stems at ground level as soon as you see the tell-tale brown fungal patches. This prevents the blight reaching the tubers. Enjoy!

Consumer Advice Ensure Post-Lockdown Doorstep Scammers Don’t Give You the Summertime Blues by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Over the past few months, the COVID-19 lockdown has halted life for so many people, not least the doorstep rogue traders. However, as the restrictions continue to be eased, the fraudsters have once again begun to make life a misery for the elderly and the vulnerable, who are being caught off guard by Coronavirus scammers. Many people have been waiting weeks and weeks to have their windows cleaned, garden spruced up, property exterior painted or driveway re-paved. Whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Firstly, they have caught you unawares, a time when you don’t really have time to think and make an informed decision; they can be very persuasive. Secondly, any offer which appears too good to be true often is. Common reports include: • Taking a deposit and never returning to do the work. • Quoting a price and then increasing the cost as the job progresses. • No statutory cancellation notices, guarantees or warranties provided. • Producing poor quality work and refusing to sort out problems or finish the work. Avoiding Rogue Traders Advice: 1) Be cautious; if a trader knocks at your door, do not agree to on-the-spot house repairs without taking advice. Say 'no thank you' and close the door. 2) Be wary of special offers. They will use tactics such as “I am only in your area today and would need to do the work now.” 3) Do not believe when told that guttering, roofing, gardening or paving work is in need of urgent repair – this may cause you to panic and allow the work to take place. 4) Do not allow anyone to pressure you into agreeing to have work carried out. If you ask them to leave and they don't, they are committing a criminal offence – contact the police on 999. 5) Do not make snap decisions. If you feel that any work needs carrying out on your property, take time to talk to family or neighbours before you make a decision. 6) Don't ever go to a bank or cash point with a trader; legitimate traders would never do this! Always use a reputable tradesperson, like the members of Safe Local Trades. Bring the Outdoors in with our Bespoke Awnings
O
utdoor living” is a phrase that perfectly sums up the nature of our terrace sun protection systems. When the sun comes out, people are readily inclined to open all the doors and windows or go outdoors to enjoy the pleasant weather.
“
But why would you stop at that? Increasing numbers of people opt to bring this sense of the outdoors into their own home, or at least a little closer. Just think how wonderful it could be, spending a little longer sitting outdoors with your family or
a few close friends in summertime. The barbecue can be left on for a while, as the cork on the last bottle gets popped. This allows you to savour the sense of the great outdoors in your own garden. Our sun protection systems significantly boost your outdoor life … without a doubt!

Don’t be Fooled!
M
any of our clients tell us that, when considering agents with a view to selling their home, they were tempted to use a multi-branch agency; they were told that more branches equals more buyers, which on the surface sounds appealing. But don’t be fooled – the “more buyers/faster sale” claim is standard practice among multi-branch estate agencies. However, the reality can be quite different, with vendors being given false hopes at best and a lack of accountability at worst. Firstly, most negotiators are targeted on their sales and, whilst their managers may encourage them to “share” their buyers with their sister branches, many would rather swim in a pool of piranhas than let one of their buyers go to another agent – even within the company! Secondly, the wider a buyer’s search area, the less
BY PAUL BRIGGS
chance there is of them buying in yours. If a buyer registers in a particular branch, it suggests they want to buy in the area covered by that branch – not in the area covered by another branch. Being offered “out of scope” locations can confuse and annoy purchasers who feel they are being “palmed off”. If they are indeed looking in another area, then the efficiency of the internet will certainly ensure that they are also registered in that area as well. Estate agency is an intensely local business. We enjoy a great supply of buyers, and work extremely closely with those whom we know are really serious about buying in the Deepings area and nowhere else. That is why we can say, hand on heart, “We are THE Deeping specialists” … and have been leaders in the area since 2001! Why not call us on 01778 349300 to find out how we can help you maximise your own sale, without any unfounded claims? Our straight-talking, sincere advice is free!

Will & Probate Services
Look Mum - We’re on the Telly! ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES
T
his is a real heart-warming story about the big guys helping the little guys to survive in the post-Covid world. A couple of months ago, offers started to appear on a few of my business networking groups. They were media companies offering free advertising to smaller companies to help them bounce back from the hit that coronavirus has dealt to the economy.
Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I applied for a few - The Metro newspaper, the Mail on Sunday and Sky TV. All of them worked in a similar way; you put your name forward with a bit of information about the company and then waited to see if your name got drawn from the hat. Fast forward to the first week of June, a friend of mine ‘won’ an advert in the Metro. I was a little jealous. Then an e-mail dropped in from Sky Adsmart, telling me I had been selected as part of their SME250 campaign and I was going to get £10,000 of free advertising. I was ecstatic, but equally I didn’t know anything about television advertising, other than it costs several million dollars to get an advert in the Superbowl half time show every year. I told Dan, my marketing guy, and he was sceptical, explaining, “It’s going to cost at least that to create the advert and they will probably tie you in to a campaign across several months that will cost tens of thousands.” Ever the optimist, but with Dan’s words of warning ringing in my ears, I made the call. Andy from the Sky Adsmart team talked me through the offer. I could have a £10,000 advertising campaign that would run across 154 Sky channels to my target audience throughout July. The catch … I had to produce a
thirty- second TV advert. As he said, I had to “have some skin in the game.” Andy was upfront about Sky’s motives; they wanted to bring on board new advertisers, but only if it was right for their business. I told him I didn’t have the first clue about creating a TV advert, so he introduced me to Josh at Trett Films. Josh took me through the process and the costs which had been capped by Sky for the offer. So, I went for it. We worked together to create something which I had always aspired to do - a TV commercial for Will & Probate Services and it premiered on July 1st. If you haven’t caught it on Sky or our social media, you can see the ad on our website www.will-probate.co.uk.

Colitis
These Unsettling Times Can Unsettle Your Dog
V
ery commonly these days, owners are worried about their dog’s toilet habits. Many’s the time I’ve had a variety of pictures (or containers!) presented to me showing the kind of messes that owners have to clear up. But why now in this time of lockdown and uncertainty? Very often, it is due to a condition of the bowel known as colitis, which is a term for inflammation of the colon, the last segment of the digestive tract. The chief symptom of colitis is splattery diarrhoea featuring mucus, fresh blood, or both. The stool may start normal then finish soft or may seem gooey throughout. There is often accompanying cramps, gas, and immediate urgency (“When you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go!”) Vomiting can also be common. Colitis may only last a few days but can be chronic, lasting weeks or months on end. Most of the nutrients have already been absorbed from the food by the time the undigestible leftovers have passed down to the colon. The colon has three functions: absorbing water, storing stool, and further digesting unabsorbed nutrients. The bacterial population in the colon is about ten times denser than that of the small intestine and these are often referred to as ‘good’ bacteria. A diagnosis of colitis is generally straightforward given the above classic findings, though
46
Wise Words By Deirdre Wilson
how to proceed depends on the signs.
Acute colitis is usually down to stress or a dietary indiscretion. Changes in your pet’s pack can cause stress – you may be furloughed or have school children at home all the time when normally your dog will have its ‘downtime’. Tensions at home can be picked up by your dog and, of course, you need to keep an eye on everyone who may slip your pet the odd treat! Treatment of acute colitis is fairly simple, but it may recur after lockdown when, again, the dynamics of your family will change.
Chronic colitis involves much more investigation to get to the root of the problems and may even involve surgery or colonoscopy to reach a diagnosis. Treatment with probiotics and a short course of antibiotics are usually enough to settle a bout of colitis. For others, food elimination diets are necessary to investigate which foodstuffs cause the disease. Surprisingly, chicken protein is being found as a factor in colitis as much as cereal proteins. However, it may also be necessary to start dogs on steroids to reduce the inflammation in the colon, and some dogs need to be kept on these lifelong to keep the bowel healthy. As always, prevention is better than cure, so try to gently wean your dog back to pre-Covid routines - just as we are doing for ourselves.

Edith Neal
opular Bourne resident and shop proprietor, Edith Neal, passed away recently at the age of ninety. For many Bourne people, Edith Neal was a very familiar face, serving customers in Neal’s Hairdressers and Tobacconists onwards from the 1960s and, when not serving customers, she would often be seen chatting to passers -by as she swept and cleaned the shop frontage on South Street.
a nursing career while serving with the WRAF. After a chance meeting with Denis Neal in the queue for Bourne cinema, they went on to marry in 1950. Moving back to Bourne, they established Neal’s Hairdressers and brought up Kelvin, Keith and Pauline.
Edith was extremely proud of her Yorkshire roots, being one of five daughters and four sons to a North Yorkshire hill farmer and his wife.
It was her love of keyboard / organ music that led her in the 1980s to found Bourne Organ Club, along with a small group of enthusiasts. Bourne Corn Exchange became the venue for regular organ concerts, with renowned organists from around the UK and Europe coming to perform.
After finishing school, she pursued

one of the largest clubs in the UK, donating monies raised to local charities. Edith was a kind, caring person who loved people and her local community. She was adored by her six grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Gerald Wells
ourne resident, Gerald Wells died peacefully at home on April 12th, 2020, aged eighty-three. Born in Grantham, he started his career in engineering as an apprentice at Aveling and Barford’s and quickly moved up the career ladder to the design office. He changed careers and became a well-respected and loved teacher of CDT for twenty-six years at The Aveland School, Billingborough, from when it opened in 1963. Many of his pupils still live in the Bourne area and have fond memories of his teaching, ably assisted
by “Ted Bear”, who would sit at the top of the blackboard, and whose motto was “I want work not excuses”!
A much-loved gentleman, Gerald will be missed by all who knew him.
Gerald’s love of dancing will also be remembered for he taught many Bourne residents to dance; he held monthly dances with big bands supplying the music. He also taught archery and chess. Gerald never seemed to grow old and was affectionately known as ‘Peter Pan’ by the family. He would often be asked by ex-pupils, “Morning Sir, how come you never look a day older from when you taught me?”

LOCAL BANDS Dean & Co. Local folk band, Dean &Co. have put together a video, “Morton Virtual Show” - use this address to watch youtu.be/TXLai7K-dlU.
Local Folk Singers and Players Keep Their Arts Alive. Pubs are the places where people go to sing a few folk songs, play a few tunes and to listen to both. However, music in pubs – even of this unamplified sort – is against the law, so many music sessions have not operated since February 2020.
Some of the organisers have now begun sessions using the internet, which most people have these days. Dean Hardy, from Morton, used to run monthly singing and playing sessions in Bourne and in Haconby now runs one monthly on the first Friday of every month. This features people singing and playing tunes, and others, also sitting in their own houses, listening and tapping along. Pete Shaw, a music teacher on the internet, also runs two music-only virtual sessions, one monthly on third Mondays, and a new, slower speed one for more beginner musicians every other Tuesday.
